(Almost) 15 Questions for 15 Followers

Thanks to @sassygirl579 for tagging me! There are actually fewer than fifteen questions below, because some earlier answerers opted not to answer some for privacy reasons. The original fifteen were posted by @aroace-moron , but since I can’t find the list on that person’s blog right now, I am fine with sticking with the ones that were passed on to me.

1. Are you named after anyone?

Yes, a great grandmother whose name is a near anagram of mine.

2. When was the last time you cried?

This past weekend (last Sunday, and it’s now Friday), when visiting an octogenarian friend and sometime fellow musician in the hospital, as it brought me right back to my dad’s last days.

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

Not often, and when I do it’s usually only with people I know and trust very well.

5. What’s the first thing you notice about people?

Eyes and voice, mostly. But I do pay attention to clothing and jewelry elements a lot too.

6. What’s your eye color?

Dark brown.

7. Scary movies or good endings?

Oh, definitely good endings. I don’t do well with horror, and that has been the case ever since seeing parts of Carrie as a very high-strung preteen.

8. Any special talents?

I can play a musical instrument with both hands and both feet simultaneously! (Really—I play organ!) I also speak some German, know Latin and classical Hebrew proficiently, and have decent reading ability in several other European languages.

10. What are your hobbies?

Music (well, I guess that’s on a semiprofessional basis), fan fiction writing, cooking, a little gardening, reading (when I can).

11. Do you have any pets?

Yes! A big, beautiful, smart, spirited male ginger mackerel tabby cat named Percy (Percival), who we think is about four years old (he’s a rescue so it’s unclear).

12. What sports do you play / have you played?

Do yoga and Pilates count? I have done both but not for a while and probably should get back to it. Also a wee bit of bicycling.

14. Favorite subject in school?

Math, and I started out as a math major in college (as a double major with organ), but did kind of an about-face when I realized I enjoyed music more. If I could redo college, I would make my second major something like German language and literature.

15. Dream job?

I already have a job I like very much, as an editor in a music publishing house, and I occasionally moonlight as an organist and singer.

Three ships: Kataang, Fang/Lightning, Finn/Rey. The first one is described in the next prompt, the middle one relates to a game I'm playing right now and the third one is because my usual discord server had me reflecting on how much of a mistake it was getting involved in the star wars fandom for the sequel trilogy.

First ship: Technically speaking, it was Ash/Misty in Pokemon. As far as actual fandom goes, it's Kataang - I found the concept of fandom because I was absolutely nuts about the Aang/Katara pairing and I needed to know if people were writing their own stories about them.

Last Song: Arms of a Woman by Amos Lee

Last Movie: man I don't even know. Probably John Wick 3 when I had a few drinks months ago.

Currently Reading: I don't read as much as I should, so idk. The last book I bought was called I Hope We Choose Love: A Trans Girl's Diary for the End of the World, which I gave a shot, but it felt like reading Tumblr essays on paper so I'm ambivalent.

Currently Watching: I'm not watching anything, since my life is working and then playing video games (mostly produced by Square Enix at the moment), but I do want to re-watch the anime Ano Hana sometime soon. The story is centred around a teenaged NEET named Jinta who's begun seeing a hallucination of his childhood friend Menma, a girl who drowned in a river when he was like 8 years old. I've seen the show already, but it's a great show about the ugly aftereffects of grief and how it changes people, as well as being able to heal and overcome in a positive way. Incredible show - a bit Off to begin with, a bit sensationalist, but still a really fantastic show.

Currently consuming: box wine with sugar-free Major Mellon flavoured Mountain Dew.

Currently Craving: access to my bank card so I can buy as much fast food as I can without going broke.

fwiw, I think a lot of people are hitting a post-6-month-of-COVID creative slump. I sure am. It's okay to be gentle and ease back your production for a while. Fandom is not going anywhere--it's okay to be a bit more of a content consumer for a while, if you want to--and if/when you feel the urge to create again, so many of us will still be here, eager to consume your content in turn. try to be gentle with yourself if you can! <3

yeah. i really should. but so much of my active focus on a topic is mediated by me actively creating stuff about it, so i suppose i’m also afraid of “taking a break” and then losing my passion for something i currently love all together, and never being able to get that back. i suppose losing my passion is also spooky to consider when SU is outright one of the few things that’s been keeping me existing on this planet for the past year. and like, i’m doing a bit better now, so no worries. but it’s scary imagining the possibility of falling into an inspiration vacuum. i feel like i’m going to be super, super picky about what pieces of fiction i consume from now on because this particular one hit home so deeply- so i likely wouldn’t be finding any new fandom homes quickly if i lost passion for SU

Even though I'm an experienced fic writer I am terrible at coming up with titles. I'd love to crowd-source a bit, to hear what you and some of your other followers do to title their pieces!

The best title advice I’ve seen was written by @kallypsowrites on a writing meme post I made. Take a look over here. 

What I tend to do is come up with some kind of play on words based on the plot and some expression. Either that or I just call it exactly what it is. Like, I have a fic that takes place at a wedding called “A June Wedding” and I have another fic about the Bentley from Good Omens called “Hell on Wheels.”

I’m a simple woman. What can I say?

Hey! Thanks so much for this message. I’ve had a really difficult time the last few days (well, weeks now) – there’s an unbelievably loud construction project going on outside my window 10 hours a day and I basically feel like I’m being tortured. Which is why it took me a while to answer you …

But it means a lot to me, especially coming from you, because I KNOW you’ve given these matters plenty of thought. 

I’ve been working through lots of identity and trauma issues in the time I’ve been in the SU fandom, but having supportive friends around me who understand my experiences (through the locus of Pearl) has been tremendously important. 

It helps that the people I’ve met feel like my first “adult” friends (college didn’t count) and when people who respect and understand me say that I’ve been mistreated or that my feelings are valid, it’s a lot easier to believe.

It boggles my mind that SU can mean and do so much for me, and I continue to think about that a lot and about what it must mean for the kids that it’s resonated with as well. It would’ve been precious to me when I was little and I’m glad kids have that now.

(It’s weird to think I would’ve identified with Connie instead of Pearl …)

Anyway. I’ve been struggling with the issues around my name for the longest time, but it took an experience just sitting around having fun with those I care about to see that who I really am is who I am with the people I love. That’s a completely separate reality from where I came from, and it finally feels real.

I noticed you mention around the same time you might start using your Hebrew name as your middle name. Whatever you decide, I hope you’ll also find the right approach to help you feel even more connected to what matters.
