“We gotta get you a new phone.”
Castiel looked up with a pinched, distant look. “What was that?” he said, brows drawn low. He hovered over a glowing sigil on the table which surrounded a small paper map of the world. The map was entirely intact; his latest attempt at a locator spell had failed to locate Jack anywhere on the planet.
Dean leaned back in his chair, reaching his arms up over his head to crack his shoulders. “We gotta get you a new phone, man. For working cases. And, you know, this.” He nodded at the police blotter tracking software whirring out data on the laptop in front of him. “We might be blocked from finding him with magic, but local police are gonna be our friend. I'm sure of it. We'll find a hit soon and then we'll move out.”
Castiel frowned. “I suppose. But I--” He shifted on his feet and then sighed. “I don't have any money and I haven't yet had time to perpetrate credit card fraud.” He rolled his eyes towards the ceiling. “It's been a busy few days.”

Slow cuts with a red-hot knife sure as hell sounds like Ketch. It’s definitely sadistic enough, but it doesn’t explain why Ketch is looking for Rowena. Or how he’s even alive in the first place. They manage to capture him, and together he and Sam stuff him in the Impala’s trunk and head back to Lebanon. He stirs just as Dean finishes locking his ankles, struggling against the bindings. Dean just rolls his eyes and backs away, crossing his arms over his chest.

Thoughts on SPN 13x13 “Devil’s Bargain”
Plot: One of the biggest reasons why I watch SPN is my love of the fantasy genre. Half the reason why I started this show in the first place when I barely knew anything about it was because it’s titled Supernatural. I LOVE fantasy. So the fantasy elements of the show are a big draw for me. The show’s mythology matters to me. Canon matters to me. But so much of this episode’s “plot” was dependent on breaking, painfully bending or straight up ignoring canon to the point that I’m actually kind of amazed that it was approved at all.
Anael & Lucifer: Where to begin? I like Anael. I like that she is this ambitious savvy business woman. I sincerely hope she’ll get to do more than just stand by Lucifer’s throne now. But everything that went down between her and Lucifer doesn’t make sense. Recharging Grace? Since when? Why didn’t Cas’s Grace recharge in S9? We could say it’s because Metatron took all of Cas’s Grace and left him human so there was no Grace left to recharge unlike what Anael was proposing, okay, sure, but what about Lucifer? We know that Michael didn’t take all of his Grace because he literally says that he isn’t going to, that he’ll leave some for a rainy day (S13E07 War of the Worlds) and we see Lucifer use that Grace to break the wards on his and Cas’s cell to escape Asmodeus so … why isn’t his Grace recharging? If Grace can recharge all he has to do is hole up somewhere until he’s back to full strength. Also why the hell is feeding on Grace or being fed on all of a sudden an enjoyable erotic experience? What the hell? Grace is the very essence of an angel – same way you could say that a soul is a human being’s very essence and no one was enjoying themselves when Amara was  devouring their soul – so why on earth then would having it sucked out of an angel be anything remotely pleasant? Sexualizing that whole thing was honestly so very creepy and unnecessary. And the clumsy attempts at humanizing Lucifer didn’t work for me either because they were essentially him throwing yet another pity party casting himself as a victim and acting criminally out of character. He just drained an angel till he was human then punched a hole through his chest but he’s going to beg for money instead of stealing from and killing the defenseless sweet guy sitting there with a bunch of cash? Really? Look at how he got Nick to say yes in S5, how he tried to get Sam to say yes both in S5 and S11, how he got Vince to say yes just last season. He’s a master seducer and manipulator. The King of Lies. Lucifer wouldn’t beg because Lucifer would never need to beg. The one thing I’m left genuinely intrigued by from this storyline is Lucifer  saying that his plan is to find Jack and then the “fun really starts” which, educated guess, means more of his Destroy Humanity agenda but that is really not gonna go well with Jack so I wonder if there will come a point when he’ll realize that Kelly, Cas, Sam and Dean have essentially ruined Jack for him so instead of having him by his side he tries to kill him before he becomes experienced enough to pose a threat to him. I mean, Jack is after all stronger than him so if he can’t control him then he’s definitely a threat. Final note here that I actually didn’t notice until someone pointed it out here on tumblr but the implications – unintended as they might be - of Lucifer and Jack being able to touch a Bible while a pregnant Kelly couldn’t are disturbing.
Heaven & the Angels: *sigh* Why? Just … why? “I existed when my father did this” and “I can do this” are worlds apart. Why would they believe he could deliver on that or on giving them back their wings? Besides, that argument that they need more angels for when Hell makes a move is just hilarious considering that the current King of Hell is one of Lucifer’s creations and that Lucifer’s entire purpose since his fall has been to destroy and conquer Heaven and Earth. Allowing Lucifer Heaven’s throne is the same as declaring Heaven itself the new Hell. At least in S11 Lucifer forced his way in and was terrorizing the angels but this, opening the door for him themselves is so … stupid. I was practically screaming at my screen to make them collectively smite him with the full force of the entirety of the Heavenly Host like they did to Amara in S11. And that shit actually left her hurt and weakened for a while so it definitely would have worked on Lucifer as he is now. Side note: I love Duma. That “We could try. Repeatedly.” and her laughing in his face gave me so much life. I hope she becomes a regular.
Ketch: S11 and S12 made progress in making Death meaningful on this show again. This season has gleefully thrown that to the wind! Don’t get me wrong, I was happy to see some of these characters returned to us, but Ketch’s resurrection has so far been the most pointless. He worked as the face of the BMoL and a very human villain of S12 but what exactly is his purpose this season? What did resurrecting him do besides further clutter an already cluttered season? I honestly enjoy him most of the time but I really have no idea why he’s back besides to insult the Winchester’s and our intelligence BECAUSE THEY ABSOLUTELY WOULD HAVE SALTED AND BURNED HIM DAMMIT!  I’ve seen some confusion as to what the demon bomb he pulled out of the Impala and threw at Lucifer was and I’m pretty sure it’s what Kevin used in S8 to escape Crowley and his demons. It’s a spell from the demon tablet. Makes me wonder though, if the writers are capable of recalling the show’s canon why do they choose to ignore so much of it?
Donatello: Love him to bits and pieces! From his constant bewilderment to being scandalized that someone is killing angels to his love of chicken! He is delightful! Unfortunately, the way they’re writing him is a giant pain in my ass. Why can he sense supernatural presences/auras when Kevin, who spent half a season unknowingly living with Gadreel, couldn’t? Why could he in S13E02 “The Rising Son” tell and comment on the fact that Jack’s powers didn’t feel like Lucifer’s, not dark and toxic as he put it, but he can’t tell the difference between Cas’s and Asmodeus’s powers? Unless Asmodeus’s shape-shifting powers go beyond appearance into adopting the aura and powers of the person he’s shifting into, which sounds farfetched and unlikely, there is no explanation as to why Don couldn’t tell the difference between an angel and a prince of hell. And that line about how he couldn’t live with himself if something happened to Jack or Mary … have they forgotten that he’s soulless? He might feel obligated or duty bound to help since he’s the only one who can but I’m having a hard time imagining a soulless man feeling so devastated for the loss of two people he hardly knows and is literally incapable of caring about.
Asmodeus & Gabriel: Unpopular opinion: I like Asmodeus. He has powers – or rather a combination of powers - we’ve never seen before, powers that Lucifer didn’t give him, which makes me wonder what he’s been up to this whole time and what his ultimate goal is. I think he could be a more interesting and dynamic villain going into S14 if the writers wrap up the whole Lucifer/AU thing by the end of this season and focus on a tighter story centered around him and the creepy demons he tried to get Jack to release from Hell. They could make demons and Hell actually scary again. Unpopular opinion 2: despite my immense love for Gabe, I’m not happy they brought him back. He had a complete, satisfying arc with a heartbreaking yet heroic death. Why ruin that now? Why fix what isn’t broken especially when there is another perfectly suitable archangel sitting in a Cage in hell that Asmodeus could’ve armed against Lucifer. Bringing Gabe back just doesn’t make sense. Did Asmodeus resurrect him? How? We know for a fact that no one but Cas has ever returned from the Empty. And he must’ve been in the Empty because he was killed by his own blade, an archangel blade. Yup. That’s Canon. And it didn’t look any different than regular angel blades back then though I won’t deny the new version is prettier. But if death by archangel blade is reversible than what the hell is the point of using it against Lucifer when he will definitely find a way back? Or was Gabe not dead this whole time? Just faked it and bailed? Please no. That would undermine and ruin all his character growth in S5 and his beautiful sacrifice championing humanity. Maybe this is AU Gabe? How? Did Asmodeus pop in and pop out with him in the few hours the door was open during the S12 finale or just a couple of episodes ago when Jack re-opened the door? That’s the only plausible answer I can think of and it’s distinctly … unlikely and unsatisfying. Again, it should have been Michael. There would’ve been no need to butcher canon then find convoluted ways to explain it away with him. He’s sitting in a Cage in Asmodeus’s domain and if Crowley can get a bunch of demons to study the cage and replicate its wards on Nick’s body then Asmodeus can figure out a way to get Michael out. Especially since he’s the only archangel stronger than Lucifer or are they also forgetting that Gabe, armed with an archangel blade, went up against Lucifer when he was in a weakened vessel that could barely contain him and ended up losing anyways?
TFW: On the one hand I completely understand Sam and Dean’s frustration at finding out that Cas was working with Lucifer again but on the other hand watching Castiel being consistently irritated and annoyed with everyone and everything is honestly such a joy to behold! I noticed that he told the brothers that Asmodeus took him only because he was in proximity to Lucifer even though Dipper told him that Asmodeus has big plans for him. Not sure if that’s just him not believing the demon or not wanting to say anything without reliable information. Either way I’m interested where that goes. Sam’s reaction to finding out that Lucifer is back and asking if he said anything about their Mom broke my heart. After Jack showed them that vision of her in the AU I can’t even imagine the kinds of horror shows that must be going through his head. Dean too. Bless Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackels. Despite not being given much to work with this episode they both show us so much. Jared shows us Sam’s fear, he shows us Sam’s anger and that one line about “having a plan now” sounded so much like a drowning man grasping at straws it actually hurt. We know Sam’s hit rock bottom and is struggling to get himself back up so being confronted with his worst nightmare, the one that makes him feel so helpless, and find himself at his mercy again along with the two people he cares about most must have been a hard blow but they finally have a plan! He has something to throw himself into and Not Deal just like he was earlier in the season. It’s sad but I think this really is the only way he knows how to function anymore. His little moment with Don telling him he’s doing great reminded me of how he used to try to get Kevin to ease up a little too and my feels were just all over the place. And Jensen, with every expression, with every movement, you can feel how so very DONE Dean is with this whole mess especially when Cas was updating them on what’s been going on. My one question here though is what the hell is an angel cuff? The only way we’ve ever seen them restraining an angel is holy oil. My best guess is that it probably has the wardings we saw Sam spraying on the walls in S13E09 “The Bad Place” or maybe even the ones in S11E14 “The Vessel” that kept Lucifer out of the sub-marine but that doesn’t really make sense because those wardings are meant to keep an angel out. Demon cuffs work because the sigils etched onto them keep demons in. Devil’s traps in all their variations hold a demon and its powers confined. Restrained. Why would sigils meant to do the opposite to angels work the same way? Unless these are other wardings that we’ve never seen before that can hold an angel in the same way a Devil’s Trap can hold a demon and my question then becomes why the hell didn’t they use them before?
Hopes: That the writers don’t continue this Canon butchery going forward. And that they find a good way to explain Gabe’s return. And please, for the love of God, kill Lucifer by the end of this season. I really want Sam to be the one to do it but someone on twitter brought my attention to the poetic beauty of having it be Dean that ends him – since Sam killed his brother’s torturer – in a tag-team effort like they did in Azazel and I am cool with that too. Just so long as I don’t have to see him in S14.

S13E07 - War of the Worlds
Yes, I do know this episode was really bad in terms of character development (read: OOC) and general plot too and also potential redemption arcs no one really wants, but WHO CARES! I loved it, YES I DID, feel free to send anon hate or whatever. I mean this ep was wild like a mid-afternoon soap opera but with our beloved SPN characters instead. Evil twin? Child custody arguments? Come on!
My favorite bits are of course the Castiel+Lucifer ones. Leaving aside the fact that once again Castiel is teaming up with the worst kind of people possible behind Sam and Dean’s backs (I made my peace with the fact that he’ll never learn from his mistakes), the scene at the bar was truly a gem. They seemed so human. Line delivery was flawless from both actors, and the one who plays Castiel chose to let the character be more expressive than usual.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Loved to see Kevin back for a cameo, too. Even though they kinda butchered his character a little, I still hope he shows up again, and also more characters too (*chough* Charlie *cough*).
Tumblr media
Last but not least: Ketch. Yes, I admit it, I bought it completely. It did seem kinda stupid even for Supernatural, but in my defense the actor looked so different I actually thought it was a new one (even before the, ahem, facial disfigurement courtesy of Dean). Plus Sam bought it too and by now we’ve all noticed I’m always on Sam’s side for some reason. What I don’t get is, was he working for Asmodeus the whole time, or did he switch sides when Dean told him that “one side will win”? I think he switched at the end but my husband thinks he was with Asmodeus from the beginning and was the one who tipped him off that Jack was missing. That makes no sense though? Or does it?
(Also, there’s some weird plothole in the whole graceless!Lucifer thing but I don’t care enough to analyze it, I prefer to just enjoy it as it is. After all, after 13 seasons continuity is a bit too much to ask of a TV show in my opinion.)

It’s been many, many days since Cas last saw Dean, and his whole body sags when their eyes meet. Dean has a cut on his forehead, and his nose is bleeding, but there’s fire in his eyes and his whole body is visibly thrumming with the energy of the fight. He takes the corridor in three long strides, and comes to a stop right in front of Cas, right in his personal space, if it weren’t for the damn bars.

Supernatural S13E07 – War of the Worlds

Asmodeus may have no interest in torturing the lowly seraph he's captured, but the same can't be said for some of Hell's other denizens. Locked in a cell with no idea whether rescue is coming, can Castiel survive long enough for the Winchesters to get to him?
