I didn't know corgi was a welsh word 😯🌟🐶 Can you tell more dog names in welsh?
It's a Welsh breed! Pair of breeds, actually - the little cute one from Pembrokeshire that looks like it belongs on a twee greetings card with a duckling on its head, and the big Carmarthenshire one that looks like it is straining every second of every day not to hunt down a cow and slaughter it. Funnily enough, America has gone feral for corgis, but here in Wales you don't often see pet ones. They don't have the temperament for pet life. I assume it's maybe a working-line Vs pet-line thing, but here their reputation is that they are snappy and aggressive if they aren't very, very carefully raised and handled.
The correct plural is corgwn, btw. Enjoy this knowledge.
Other Welsh breeds with Welsh names:
Llamgi Cymreig - the Welsh springer spaniel. 'Spaniel' is actually Sbaengi, meaning 'Spain dog', so cognate with the English, but llamgi is 'jumping/springing dog'.
Daeargi Cymreig - the Welsh terrier. Daeargi means 'earth dog', because of the traditional chasing things into setts and warrens thing. The Sealyham terrier is daeargi Sealyham, so same thing
And, Ci Defaid Cymreig - the Welsh sheepdog, pretty literal
And then non-Welsh breeds are varyingly named along similar lines. Sbaengi adara - the cocker spaniel (lit 'bird Spain dog'). Sbaengi hela - the English Springer (lit 'hunting Spain dog'). Sbaengi Siarl - the King Charles spaniel (lit 'Charles' Spain dog')
Ci defaid is generically used for collie or sheepdog.
Terriers there are many! I pulled these off of Bruce:
Black-&-tan terrier - daeargi melyn a du (yellow and black earth dog)
Bull-terrier - daeargi tarw
Cairn terrier - daeargi byrgoes (shortleg earth dog)
Fox terrier is fun, it gets DIALECTS. Daeargi/ci codi llwynog (fox-raising earth dog/dog) in the North, ci codi cadno (fox-raising dog) in the South
Irish terrier - daeargi Gwyddelig
Maltese terrier - daeargi Melita
Scotch terrier - daeargi Albanaidd/Sgotaidd
Skye terrier - daeargi Heledd (who is Heledd???)
Toy terrier - corddaeargim (dwarf earth dog! The 'cor' is the same as in corgi)
Yorkshire terrier - daeargi Efrog (York earth dog)
Let's see, what else... Um, adargi is 'retriever' - bird dog, literally. Golden retriever is adargi melyn (yellow bird dog)
Poodle is just pwdl. Cymricised transliteration, innit
My brain won't think of any more dogs, sorry. HMU if you have a specific one lol

Horses & friends of Palomino
This post has been a long time coming - I'm so excited to finally share the "face claims" of the horses and other animal friends in the series as part of A Palomino Farewell!
Tumblr media
Darlin' | Scotch, Palomino
The titular horse of the series, Scotch is described as having a white star on his forehead (reference). Palomino is a colour, not a breed, the latter of which is not specified in the story. Jack describes Scotch as a 'speed demon', but he's responsive and only goes fast when he's asked to. Favourite treat - apples!
* Darlin' has no physical descriptions in the series. I have a separate post planned discussing diversity for horse riders.
Tumblr media
Jack | Whiskey, Chestnut
Whiskey is described as a chestnut with white stockings. His breed is not specified in the series, but pictured is an American Quarter Horse. It's mentioned in the drabble If Only that Whiskey has been with Jack since he was a foal, and he knows little tricks like picking up saddle pads for on command.
Tumblr media
Champ | Tanqueray, Friesian
Tanqueray makes a cameo in A Palomino Christmas. He's the stables elder and described as 'supremely poised' - just like his dad.
Tumblr media
Tequila | Patron, Clydesdale
Teak's horse isn't mentioned in the series, but I've always imagined him with a big, sturdy horse like a Clydesdale. And I don't know about you, but these two faces are really twinning for me 😂
Tumblr media
Ginger | Ale, Dapple Grey Lusitano
Ginger's horse isn't mentioned in the series either, but I imagine she would have an elegant horse like the Lusitano.
Tumblr media
Poppy | Cider, American Paint Horse
Cider makes a brief cameo in A Palomino Christmas as 'Pie', which I like to think is her nickname. I just think this American Paint Horse goes so well with the redhead!
Tumblr media
Bourbon, Cob | Half-Pint, Shetland Pony
Bourbon is the trusty pack horse that goes on the trip in the series, whereas Half-Pint is everyone's favourite naughty pony who makes a cheeky appearance in A Palomino Christmas. The above pictures are true to scale 🤪
Tumblr media
Jameson, Border Collie
Above left is a rare archival photo of Jameson as a puppy and on the right, of Jameson on horse-walking duty at the Statesman.
Tumblr media
Barn Cats
The barn cats are a bit of an Easter egg! They're mentioned in an obscure headcanon about Jack's allergies, which was expanded on in Part VIII - Silver Pony. Should we name each of them individually?

On October 20th 1938 photographer Iain MacMillan was born in Carnoustie.
After leaving Dundee high school in 1954, he worked as a trainee manager in a local jute mill, before studying photography at the Regent Street Polytechnic (now the University of Westminster). He returned home in 1959 to photograph Dundee tenements and street scenes - powerful images of a way of life about to disappear. His talent was soon recognised by magazines and publishers, and by the early 1960s he was getting commissions from the Lutterworth Press, the Sunday Times, Plays & Players and the Illustrated London News.
Later in the decade he took photographs for a book, The Sculpture of David Wynne, and for Wynne's exhibition catalogue, while also working on a photographic essay about life in the capital. The Book of London (1966) contains some of his best work, and brought him to the attention of Yoko Ono, who commissioned him to photograph her exhibition at the Indica gallery, in St James's. It was there that Yoko met John Lennon, who invited MacMillan to photograph the Abbey Road album cover.
MacMillan continued working with the couple on such projects as the Live Peace in Toronto album (1969) and Sometime in New York City (1972). He also collaborated on the film Erection, an animation of shots of a London hotel under construction with a soundtrack by John and Yoko.
By the mid-1970s, MacMillan was teaching photography in Stoke-on-Trent. As well as possessing a sense of composition and a lively imagination, he was a meticulous craftsman with a sound technical knowledge. He tried to instill these values into his students. In the 1980s his photographs were exhibited in galleries in Britain and the US, and on the continent. The BBC used his work in the series The Rock and Roll Years.
In the 1980s, after his parents died, MacMillan moved back to Carnoustie. He continued to take photographs of Scottish landscapes, his friends and families - and his beloved collie dog, Mac - often using a borrowed camera.
In 1993 Paul McCartney invited MacMillan to take another picture on the famous zebra crossing near the EMI studios in St John's Wood, this time of the Beatle and his Old English sheepdog. MacMillan contrasted the simplicity of the earlier picture by including a team of policemen, press photographers and a lively crowd. The resulting image was used on the cover of the album Paul is Live, thus scotching rumours that McCartney was dead.
MacMillan was modest about his own achievements. He retained a lasting affection for Paul and Linda McCartney, whom he described as "the most solidly down to earth and unaffected couple imaginable".
Iain MacMillan passed away on May 8th 2006 from lung cancer.

Doodled a couple of my castaway ocs
I mentioned in a much earlier post that I hc Collin to have a husband so here he is. Scotch is a ship builder from Giya. It’s mentioned that one of Collin’s old jobs was ship construction, which was where he first met Scotch. Scotch is a pretty laid back guy, but he kind of lacks a sense of self preservation. Scotch is probably one of the only few if not the only castaway who came to PNF-404 with the intention of actually helping Olimar, except you know how that goes, he crashed. He actually ends up being turned into a leafling and once he’s cured, Collin is both surprised and not surprised he’s here. Scotch is based on Scotch Collies.
Mal is a mountain climber from Ohri and a childhood friend of Dingo and Yonny. Mal actually first met Dingo in the very same incident where he got lost in the mountains, Mal is a native to the mountainous region of Ohri so she handled being lost far better than Dingo did(who I hc is from the desert region of Ohri). Mal loves playfully teasing Dingo and has her own speech pattern similar to Russ and Bernard, she always greets people with “yoo hoo”(think Shinobu from demon slayer) and it gets a reaction out of Dingo every single time because he knows that means he has to deal with her teasing ass. Mal is basically the opposite of Dingo personality wise, super friendly even if she does like to tease from time to time, but is more than capable of being passive aggressive if she dislikes someone enough. Unlike Scotch, she doesn’t get leafed, she is rescued the normal way like any other castaway. Mal is based on Alaskan Malamutes.

Call of the Wild (Jack London) "The story follows Buck—a mix of St. Bernard and Scotch collie—throughout his journey as a sled dog. Buck’s story begins at the house of Judge Miller in Santa Clara, California. Here, Buck is a beloved domesticated pet, living comfortably. However, after gold is discovered in the Yukon territory of Canada, Buck is stolen by one of Miller’s gardeners as the demand for sled dogs increases. The gardener sells Buck to dog traders and makes a profit, and Buck is soon shipped north, abused and beaten as he goes. Along with a sweet, unassuming dog named Curly, Buck is sold to two government couriers, François and Perrault, who put him to work as a sled dog. Buck is soon overwhelmed by his surroundings, particularly when he sees a group of huskies attack and kill Curly. As Buck is forced to adapt to the wild, his primitive instincts begin to surface. It is during this time that he makes an enemy of the lead sled dog, Spitz. The two fight a number of times, and Buck consistently undermines him in the hopes of diminishing his authority. After a final, decisive battle, Buck kills Spitz and appoints himself as the new lead dog."
The Griesly Wife (John Manifold) "A poem in which an abusive husband chases his new wife through the snow -- until she changes into a beast and turns the tables on him."

The inflammatory tags on that blog post about the auction prices on working Kelpies is funny considering it's difficult to find traditional driving stock-dogs in North America.
Tumblr media
When I was looking into adopting a Kelpie or a Heeler as a thru-hiking companion, the farmers just straight up told me the driving lines are being phased out in favour of chute-dogs because trucking cattle is easier (and cheaper) than driving livestock over long distances on horseback or with quads. In large part because the lands are fragmented and one requires permissions to cross locked off parcels of land. Especially with absentee landlords sitting in big cities (eg. New York City, Toronto) and notorious for not answering emails or phone calls. And becoming more difficult every year.
Trying to tie farm-dogs into labour politics of farmhands is nonsensical here.
If you really want to critique agricultural animals being commodified by capitalism, could at least brush up a bit on David Nibert or read any of the eco-Marxist, green anarchist and social ecologist critiques of consumerist animal liberation groups being incomplete in their analyses of animal exploitations.
Better yet bring up how the enclosure of the commons and industrialization of livestock created the modern Border Collie, at the detriment of tenant farmers (eg. the crofters) and the British landrace collies (eg. Welsh collie, Old-Time Scotch Collie, Patagonian Sheepdog) and abroad (in the case of the Swedish Vallhunds and other herding breeds after WW2); or the development of gundogs, leisure class and the landed gentry.
Or even touch on settler-colonialism, displacements of Indigenous people (and Indigenous dogs), loss of knowledge in land stewardships, as well as the effects of cattle and sheep on prairie ecosystems. Or even just the landlordism aspect of big agriculture or the petite bourgeois politics of the small landowners.
Sorry, even working dogs are losing their jobs. There are just so much better anti-capitalist critiques of animal exploitation, landownership, industrial agriculture and privatization of farming operations.
