As an Atheist (and I’m not even sure that’s appropriate just close) there’s no set standard for burial, mourning or even a preference. It certainly wasn’t anything David and I discussed in any seriousness. I’m sure at his age he didn’t expect to need to. He new I was icked out by cremation and he wasn’t ever ecstatic about it himself after me explaining the modern processes to him. I’d personally prefer to be in a crypt, with a door, and a giant black Angel with it’s spear crossing the entrance. I’m sure he’s mentioned Viking Funeral several times in jest (or not)! However, greed and society have made it almost impossible to have an interesting burial much less elaborate statuary. Though I realize we become soulless vessels, I’d still like the opportunity to come back and haunt those I don’t like! Lol Anyway, my point being, is ashes is where we will all probably end up. As land becomes more expensive we all get shoved into smaller spaces. My mom, even though she had a plot, left instructions to be cremated and interred. Sometimes I think how sad no one sees that beautiful piece of pottery I got her from Dirtworks in Seagrove. Beautiful like her, intricate like her personality and just radiant. Here we are again. I wanted David to have something he would have found attractive if he had to look at it. Earthy, rustic, natural…a bit of flash in the bright copper… a little like him. He was always a bright flash in a mundane world. Luckily, thanks to my neighbor and superb potter, Betsy Shanahan Himmelman, at Promethea Arts, I was able to procure such an item. Her talented process includes using foliage from her yard and quite possibly our connecting woods! The driftwood from the numerous beaches we’ve walked here, namely Hammonasset. It seemed to fit. And to have someone local from the town he loved living in. Both of us had finally found a place where we were happy living (despite the “it’s cold” grumbles here and there) I’m very grateful for her art. It’s not within me to toss him into the wind. So having something complex and beautiful, like him, to reflect on and to keep with me, seemed the only appropriate way. (at Connecticut) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoQcy0lvsNH/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Mugshot Monday - "Brown Fish Tumbler" by Bruce Gholson of Bulldog Pottery with Morning Glory Cold Brew by Peace Coffee
Did you know there are more than 80 potters living and working in Seagrove, North Carolina? I did not, until my cousin Laurie texted me about a day-trip she was planning.
It's a really cool story that ends with this photo of me holding a lovely tumbler by Bruce Gholson of Bulldog Pottery.
Laurie's family gives my Aunt Corie (her mom) amazing monthly experiences for Christmas instead of wrapped presents.
For this year's excursions, they used the passions of friends and family to influence each destination. I am told that my love of coffee mugs inspired a trip to Seagrove to visit as many pottery studios as possible in one day! 😀
This is an amazing idea, but listen to this twist: The intent was to find the perfect cup to send me for my Mugshot Monday project. 😍
Laurie's only task for me was to review the list of 80+ Seagrove potters to help create some sort of an itinerary.
Lucky for all of us, discoverseagrove.com has maps, contact information, and write-ups of all the Seagrove potters. I really enjoyed going through them all and gave my recommendations.
The only pottery studio I recognized was Bulldog Pottery. Back in 2019, Jeff Oestreich loaned out mugs for his students to study and I loved his Bruce Gholson mug.
On the day of the trip back in March, Laurie continuously texted photos and stories from all the studios they visited. I was geeking out. So much amazing pottery!
And then they arrived at the Bulldog Pottery Studio. Laurie and Corie had a delightful time talking with Bruce and his wife--and studio partner--Samantha Henneke.
Tumblr media
Laurie shot a short video of Bruce explaining how he glazed his favorite cup in the studio. I'm now holding that same cup.
youtube
One little info-nugget Laurie shared with me is that Bruce's first name is actually "Karl" with a "k"! "Bruce" is his middle name. That made me smile. 😀
What an amazing experience. I kind of feel like I got a Christmas present out of this, too!
Thank you for this fabulous cup, Laurie and Corie! I love it and I love the story even more.

Seagrove, NC - A Pottery Lover's Dream
Seagrove, NC – A Pottery Lover’s Dream
If you are a pottery lover the town of Seagrove, North Carolina is a destination. Seagrove boasts well over 100 potters in the area and the quaint town is the epicenter of all things pottery. Many of the shops are open year round for visitors and they welcome having folks pop in to watch them work. On our recent trip to the beach we made a stop on the way to Seagrove to spend just a couple of…

We love this photo of an artist at work. Ben Owen, Sr., works on a piece of pottery, ca. 1950s. Owen was the sole potter at Jugtown Pottery, near Seagrove, N.C., starting in the 1930s. Read more about the Jugtown Pottery Collection at http://go.uncg.edu/pa626g

When I was getting ready for my trip to NC, a friend reminded me of the rejuvenating power of exploring while on the road. With her words fresh in my mind, I decided to detour through the Pottery Highway of Seagrove on my way to the coast from Winston-Salem. I am so glad I did! This incredible community of potters has a central museum and info center that highlights the works of all the potters in the area so that you can easily see examples of their styles and map out a route accordingly. With dozens of studios in the area, it would difficult to see them all without an extended stay. I fell hard for the work of Becky Lloyd, seen in the first three images. These were part of a special exhibit at the museum so I wasn’t able to visit her studio in person — it is outside of Asheville — but stared long and hard at the work on display. And I was captivated by a series of wonky faces — though I was unable to identify the maker of the mugs, the jug washy a member of the the Lily King family. And the colorful platter in the last image is the work of Stephanie Martin. I was lucky enough to find the Dean Martin studio a bit off the beaten path and was instantly drawn into the bright colors and loose line work and shapes of Martin’s work. I got to chat with the artist for some time and felt utterly charmed by the whole environment. My only regret is that I didn’t spend more time exploring her transferware pieces but I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the bold graphic colors of the other work. My absolute favorite 🍎 apples are now at the farmers market! Crimson Crisp have that crunch of a honey crisp but aren’t as sweet. Check out your local market for varieties that never hit the grocery stores due to short growing seasons etc. My bowl is from one of the potters at Seagrove! #farmersmarket #raleighstatefarmersmarket #seagrove #fall https://www.instagram.com/p/B21v2y9BsgD/?igshid=175396z775iyo

Five Stars Great. Go to Amazon
Five Stars Great book and overview of traditional NC pottery with lots of pictures to inspire. Go to Amazon
Classic Seagrove Pottery Reference This is a collector-oriented work which covers the full panoply of traditional pottery originating in the North Carolina Peidmont. Seagrove, NC, located at the center of the state, has emerged as the center of this tradition. The regional focus of Lock's book permits a reasonably thorough representation of the pottery of the Seagrove area. "Traditional Potters" covers stoneware, earthenware, and art pottery styles, with the strongest emphasis on the art pottery genre. It is profusely illustrated, although the photography is inexplicably flawed by the choice of inappropriate backgrounds (usually a graduated blue, which causes blue-glazed pieces to fade or become indistinct and contrasts garishly with yellows and reds). Many pieces are presented in as-found condition and the book provides a good representation of what is "out there," waiting to be rediscovered. There are a few errors in the book (for example, the mis-identification of several J. B. Cole pieces as being glazed in "Mottled Green," when they are actually glazed in Green-Over-White, popularly known as "Malachite"), but on the whole the information is reasonably informative and well-presented. Go to Amazon
Great Reference for NC pottery collections Currently out of print, but worth looking for. This book is a must for all interested in Seagrove, NC pottery. Well written and easy to understand by both beginners and experienced collectors. Book includes family histories and history of the region. It gives insight on the personalities of the local potters, those that are still with us and those that have passed on. If you are interested in collecting Seagrove pottery, this book is an absolute must for your collection. Go to Amazon
If you can find one; BUY IT!!! This is by far the best reference for one of the hottest "new" collectibles on the antique/vintage market. I treasure my copy! If you can find one: BUY IT!!! Be able to identify Southern Pottery easily with this book. Go to Amazon
The "Bible" of Seagrove Potters....... This book is both a history and catalog of pottery made in the Seagrove, North Carolina area. It catalogs almost all known examples and is a must for anyone interested in Eastern North Carolina pottery. Go to Amazon

Samantha Henneke
She’s already in my sketch book but I love her works. She has a studio full time called Bulldog Pottery. In North Carolina where there’s a community of potters of seagrove. She grew up in Blacksburg, Virginia by Allegheny and Blue-Ridge mountains. Attending her hometown college, where she focused herself on pottery. And us was during 1991 she found a fondness for pottery. She tranfered too the New York state college of ceramics, Alfred university and graduated with a BFA in Ceramics in 1995.
She works on trying to get a traditional flare in her aesthetics, examples being a dotted mug, an insect on a playe, swirl covered jar. Or landscapes. She does a technique in which she composes crystalline glazed paintings on porcelain canvases etc.
I overall feel she has a deep connection too nature.

The North Carolina Pottery Trail - Seagrove, NC - An Experience You Shouldn't Miss!
The North Carolina Pottery Trail – Seagrove, NC – An Experience You Shouldn’t Miss!
On a recent visit to North Carolina I spent a day exploring the countryside, stopping along the way at some of the most fascinating little pottery shops you can imagine. For some of the potters, the work dates back several generations and their technique learned while they were still children. For others, the craft started as a hobby but grew into a way of life. The potters all know each other.…
