Do you have any examples of shows that handle speech impediment representation well? As someone with a speech impediment, it’s frustrating to constantly see it used only in the contexts of “This person is socially awkward” or “This person has something wrong with them,” etc.

Nothing comes to mind — you're right that there's tons of examples, and most suck. Like, I'll give partial credit to Umbrella Academy for Diego's stutter, Septimus Heap for Sep's selective mutism, and It for Bill's stutter/lisp. They all get the usefulness of speech path, and the way that stress or tiredness can mess you up. But all three also have "I can't be successful unless I talk normatively" crap, and both It and Umbrella Academy briefly have the stutter be the butt of a joke.

Does anyone else have examples that are actually good? Please help.

childhood books that are so fucked up on the reread part 1 of infinty: septimus heap. our guy was a child soldier from birth. the entire city-state dealt with an oppressive police state for a decade, waiting for the monarchy to resurface. this fucking necromancer will not ever go away. not after the first time he dies and certainly not after the fifth. you'd think he'd be bored by now. some old queen moved a tower to the other side of the palace for no reason. the main character got time-kidnapped for six months and had to live in the same place that all his loved ones had not been born in yet. his best friend was raised by wolverines. his other best friend is named Beetle. the castle is called The Castle. there's a defunct nuclear reactor underneath it. some of the rats can talk and have human levels of intelligence and people still put out rat traps and try to kill them. there's a fuckin time purgatory that some guy thought everyone would love even as an increasing number of random lost travelers got trapped there forever. if you think you know all the secret tunnels under this place no you don't. and you can rent pink paddleboats in the summer

Tbh I think staying at zeldas cottage together is the funniest possible thing that could've happened to silas+marcia specifically. Silas goes from thinking marcia is cold and unfeeling and insane to being like "oh so she CAN experience joy but only when she's telling us over breakfast all about the latest extremely niche topic she's gotten invested in. yeah sep heap is definitely one of those books from my childhood that are sort of permanently ingrained in my brain and im pretty sure had a lasting effect on how i approach fantasy. something something stories that center on family and friendship something nontraditional fantasy with folklore influences. somethin about the illustrations too i think. anyway here's a doodle for you.

septimus heap books changed my life but i will never forget the moment jenna got upset with septimus for killing the bridge toll man and instead of taking a moment to philosophize about killing people is wrong and you always have a choice like most fairy tales and fantasies will instead sep was like 'its nice that youve lived a privileged life without murder jen, but sometimes killing is the only choice you have; i dont feel guilty about it and id do it again' like DAMN yes this boy is a lot of trauma packed into a small pre-teen body but that mometn stayed with me, the moment the fantasy story i loved allowed itself to face grim reality
