The Summer of Love
Tumblr media
Jake Peralta x Reader - Taking care of each other when you get sick [1.08K Words]
“Babe, come on, open up!” Jake called into your apartment door.
It had been days since Jake had last seen you. Since he last saw you, work had turned into a chore and the nights he spent without you felt lonely. The Brooklyn summer was supposed to bring in what Jake had planned to be the Summer of Love featuring his favorite actors: drive-in movies to see your favorite films, Sunday mornings spent with your parents at brunch, and weekday nights making gummy worm pancakes in celebration of solving whichever case you two had been partnered on. Instead, the intense New York sun had brought in a haze of dryness and a waft of heat that put you in a sickly trance.
Jake knocked on your door once more, before deciding enough was enough. “Okay, I’m coming in!” He warned as he fished the spare key to your place out of his jean pocket. The keys jingled wildly as he jimmied his way through the door. He burst into the apartment, taking in the scene. The room was something close to a crime scene, take out boxes stacked haphazardly on your counters, empty tissue boxes decorating your carpet, with a trail of loose socks leading into your room.
You groaned at the sight of your boyfriend, shielding yourself under your covers.
“Awe I love it when you call me Argh Huff Mmurr,” The detective joked sarcastically mimicking your grunts while throwing your stray socks into your laundry hamper with a soft Jordan when it fell into the basket. “It’s always so endearing.” Jake took in your sleep messed up hair and cough syrup tinted lips. Your condition was worse than Jake had anticipated, he was going to need to call for back-up.
In record time the rest of the squad had arrived, masked up and ready to be assigned a task. “Thank you all for coming here today on your weekend off,” Jake greeted. “I’m calling this Operation: Heal the Babe, the babe being (Y/N) and healing being the goal of this mission.”
The squad collectively raised their eyebrows, “Yes, there was no need to explain any of that.” Jeffords started.
“And do you have to make everything a movie mission Peralta?” Holt questioned, agreeing with the sergeant.
“Babe is also such an outdated nickname, speaks loudly on your modern take of feminism Jake.” Santiago teased earning a smirk from Diaz.
The gang quieted down their taunting as Jake admitted the flaws in his mission name and began assigning positions. With the responsibilities assigned, the group broke out in a quiet Nine-Nine cheer as to not disturb your sleepened state. Boyle had begun whipping up what he would describe as a fabulous blend of legumes brewed in a blend of Tahitian spices and chicken broth. With his hands full sprinkling egg noodles into the soup, the chef continued to hum happily at the concoction he was stewing. At the other corner of the room Holt and Santiago had begun the task of organizing all the piled up mail and missed package slips you’ve neglected. The others - Jeffords, Linetti, and Diaz - ventured off to the pharmacy for snacks and supplies.
Although Hitchcock and Scully had originally joined the mix, the pair had drifted off in their own mission. Without either of the two being seen by anyone, Jake had tasked himself with dealing with the mess. Once Jake had bagged the evidence of your food containers and slewn garbage, he promptly snuck his way back into your bedroom for some recon. He jumped over the trenches of your stacked pillows and shimmied under the vent of your blanket fort before hitting the jackpot - your adorable face.
Your cheeks were dusted red due to your fever and a similar tint shown on your crinkled nose. “Jake,” you rasped his name in protest. “Get out, I don’t want to get you sick.” Your whine came out soft, dismissing any harness in your tone.
Jake shook his head with a smile before planting a soft kiss on your pouted mouth. “Rule number one of police work: never shy away from a challenge.” Peralta whispered before giving you another kiss, this one feeling deeper than the first.
You let out a small laugh accepting defeat, “I’m pretty sure the first rule of policing is to protect and serve,” You countered. “Thank you for coming to save me.” You reach up to brush a fallen curl away from your boyfriend's face, dragging your thumb down his cheeks, familiarizing yourself with the curve of his jaw.
Peralta’s corner lip lifted up further as he noticed you wearing his old police academy training shirt, “What can i say? I missed my partner. This was supposed to be the Summer of Love!” He leaned his cheek into your palm, finding comfort in your touch. The detective had forgotten how soft your hands were. “Plus the glowy skin your fever is giving you is doing something for me.” Jake winked, beaming despite your eye rolling. He knew there was no hate in your actions, and the long nights without you had made him throw all caution into the wind. He snaked his arms around your waist, bringing you closer to his chest. Jake had leaned into your presence once more, making you erupt with giggles as his lips teased your shoulder and neck.
Before long, away with the wind, Jake's immune system was also tossed to the side. As soon as you had gotten better, you saw that Peralta was missing from your first day back at the precinct. Before you could reach the seat of your desk your phone rang with a text notification. You unlocked your phone revealing a picture of Jake in your old police academy t-shirt, the hem riding up his stomach as the shirt fit over him tightly, fitting a size too small. Jake’s happy expression despite his sickened state made you smile. You chuckled, as you cleared your evening schedule while asking Boyle for his chicken noodle soup recipe.
As life would have it, the Summer of Love had a recasting of its feature actors. The movie now starred: days of you nursing Jake back to health, a month's worth of the both of you catching up on missed work, and a string of late nights spent over boxes of pizza and confusing case files. Although your summer had not turned out like how either of you had wanted, you were happy to finally have spent some time together.
And on cue Hitchcock and Scully had finally returned during one of your late night missions with a steaming thermos filled with sweet coffee. “Hey Jakey, the ladies at the coffee shop gave us these tickets to the drive-in movie this weekend. Did you want them?”
Jake smiled looking your way, “That’d be nice,” he said leaning in to give you a kiss, not a worry in his mind. “The Summer of Love reprise sounds like a great movie.”

Brooklyn Nine-Nine distinguishes itself in its approach to gender, race, and sexuality within the workplace comedy genre. The show's ensemble cast, reflecting a spectrum of backgrounds, challenges traditional stereotypes. Captain Raymond Holt, a high-ranking, openly gay black man, serves as a powerful symbol of diversity in a leadership role.
Gender dynamics are explored through characters like Detective Amy Santiago, who defies gender norms by excelling in a traditionally male-dominated field. The series subtly critiques workplace biases while showcasing the strength of diverse perspectives. Additionally, the friendship between Jake Peralta and Rosa Diaz dismantles assumptions about masculinity.
The show tactfully addresses societal issues, such as racial profiling and discrimination, without losing its comedic essence. Terry Jeffords, a sergeant and family man, adds depth to discussions about race and stereotypes. The diverse relationships within the precinct provide a microcosm for exploring acceptance and understanding.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine skillfully incorporates LGBTQ+ representation, portraying relationships with authenticity and humor. The love story between Captain Holt and his husband, Kevin, normalizes same-sex relationships within the context of a workplace setting. By weaving these narratives into the comedic fabric, the show contributes to breaking down barriers and fostering inclusivity.
In comparison to other workplace comedies, Brooklyn Nine-Nine stands out for its commitment to authentic representation and its willingness to engage with social issues. The series goes beyond surface-level diversity, embedding thoughtful commentary within its comedic framework, making it a noteworthy example in the evolving landscape of television storytelling.

B99 X GENSHIN AU CAST LIST
Here's the cast list I so far of my Brooklyn 99 x Genshin AU! Like I said before, I haven't extensively watched B99 yet, so if some of the characterizations are off, bear with me!
Jake Peralta is Shikanoin Heizou
Amy Santiago is Yanfei
Captain Holt is Neuvillette
Sergeant Terry Jeffords is Wriothesley
Rosa Diaz is Kuki Shinobu
Gina Linetti is Kirara
Charles Boyle is Kaveh
Scully & Hitchcock will be both Venti and Itto, they just mess around and don't do their jobs lol (they're also interchangeable with each other)
lastly for now, Kevin Cozner is Zhongli because i think Neuvili is funny (i love them with my whole heart)
Edit: I was in a rush to finish this so I completely forgot that I got the idea for Neuvillette to be Holt & Wriothesley to be Terry from @s0n1cdrag0n!)

meeting the squad
pairing: rosa santiago x reader
reader’s pronouns: he/him
Tumblr media
When you walk into the precinct for the first time, intending to bring Rosa lunch, you’re nearly bowled over within the first few seconds of walking in. You just barely manage to hold onto your food whilst dodging a moving projectile in the form of a police officer.
“Shoot, sorry,” the brown-haired officer grins sheepishly. Judging from his rather childish energy and messy desk, you think he must be Jake Peralta. You wave him off and head over to Rosa’s desk, but you don’t quite make it before you’re stopped by Jake again. “You’re here to see Rosa?”
You’re not sure what Rosa’s comfort level is in terms of revealing your relationship, so you answer the question vaguely. “Yeah. Just had to bring her something.”
“Hey,” an all too familiar voice sounds. You turn around, only to find Rosa standing before you. You feel a smile breaking onto your face before you can help it. You hand her the food you brought and her eye twitches, as if she’s trying not to smile.
“Oh my god,” a sudden voice interjects. A man pops up from behind Jake’s shoulders. You’re guessing that this is… Boyle. He has an excited look on his face, and you feel your heart begin to race. “You’re Rosa’s boyfriend!”
Shit. Your cover is blown. You send an apologetic glance at Rosa but, to your surprise, she doesn’t seem concerned.
“He is my boyfriend,” Rosa confirms. You’re sure your jaw is wide open. The moment she says this, everyone in the room falls silent and turns to stare at you. You grimace and Rosa notices. She pulls out her phone, taps it a few times, and looks back up to face the group. “You all have… one minute to ask him questions. Go.”
“Are you emotionally repressed, too?” A long haired brunette you recognize as Gina says. She only glances up at you for a moment, before returning her attention to her phone. “G-Hive, thoughts?”
“Not sure, actually,” you shrug good-naturedly. “Also, I think I follow you on Twitter.” This gets Gina’s attention, as she lowers her phone and looks at you with more interest. She looks you up and down—to your dismay—and nods before returning to her phone once more. You don’t bother trying to understand what that meant.
“Who’s your favorite Ninja Turtle?” Jake is nearly bouncing in his chair with excitement. A woman wearing a pantsuit- Santiago, perhaps- rolls her eyes at his question.
“Leonardo,” you answer. Jake gives you a thumbs-up and swivels around in his chair, going back to whatever he seemed to be writing before. The sergeant, Terry, asks you about when you met Rosa. The captain walks out of his office, looms in the doorway and stares at you ominously. At least, you think it’s ominous. It’s rather hard to read the man’s facial expression. You’re starting to feel a bit overwhelmed when the next question comes.
“Have you heard of-” An officer tries to ask. He has marinara stains on his shirt. He must be Hitchcock. Your presumptions are confirmed when you see him exchange a meaningful look with another man, evidently Scully.
“Nope, time’s up,” Rosa interrupts Hitchcock before he can finish his sentence. He only seems bothered by this for a few moments, before he goes back to eating a sandwich.
“Back to work, everyone,” the captain announces. You nod at him in way of apology and he raises an eyebrow before returning to work. You wave goodbye to Rosa and quickly make your exit.
You don’t see Rosa again until later that night, when you’re both in your apartment. You’re scrolling on your phone when Rosa’s voice breaks through the silence.
“Gina liked you,” Rosa mentions. You pause for a moment, before raising an eyebrow at her. Admittedly, you hadn’t expected her to say that. Moreover, you hadn’t expected Gina to tolerate you. You assumed that she hated you, from the lack of eye contact and general disinterest. Perhaps she’s always like that, though.
“That’s high praise,” you huff out a laugh. Rosa crosses her arms over her chest.
“Gina doesn’t like anyone,” Rosa says, raising her eyebrows to signal how important that statement is. “So, yeah, it kind of is.”
The two of you discuss the occurrence earlier that day for a while. It’s more entertaining to hear Rosa’s perspective on things. Apparently, the squad was in a bit of an uproar after you left.
“Your coworkers are really nice,” you smile, tapping your fingers against Rosa’s hand. “I can see why you like them.”
“I hate all of them,” Rosa hisses, her posture growing stiff. You know that stiffness to be related to expressions of vulnerability. Rosa hates being vulnerable. You can’t help but tease her a bit, though.
“Sure,” you laugh. You awkwardly put an arm around the couch and, subsequently, Rosa’s shoulder. Rosa must sense your hesitation, because she rolls her eyes and tugs you closer. You kiss her on the cheek and rest your head on her shoulder, listening as she recounts the rest of her day at work.

Things I wish they had shown in Brooklyn 99
I love, love, love B99. It’s better than friends and no I don’t take constructive criticism. They don’t need sexism to show humor and there is so much character development what’s not to love?
Anyways, I am in the phase where I make lists for every thing so here goes my list of things I wish they had shown as a compulsive B99 binge watcher:
1. Holt and Rosa doing pride month things : Holt and Rosa are an amazing team and both of them are part of LGBTQ+ community. I loved when they showed Rosa coming out and them talking about it and the whole acceptance thing with her parents. But I wish there was more Holt and Rosa content where they act like they hate taking part in the pride and doing all those things but they secretly love it and like maybe Rosa catches Holt doing something pride related or he catches Rosa during pride month and they are like yeah okay lets do it together. And maybe they dress their dogs together for pride too. SO CUTE UGH
2. Showing us all seven brothers of Amy: SO we got Amy and Jake thanksgiving episode with their families at Peralta’s. It would have been awesome  if we got thanksgivings  part 2 at Santiago’s and got to see the photos of the Santiago children at the mantel, piano and stairs. And then all the seven brother and Amy being hella competitive. Like alll Boyle cousins wear tan that’s their weird family thing. I  wanted to see Santiago siblings weird family thing.
3. Mlepnos” backstory: They brought back Mlepnos in the wedding episode of Peraltiago. I don't know about you all but that generated hell lot of curiosity about him for me. I wanted mlepnos backstory. Is he a criminal somehow? But like really small really ridiculous crime he had done but he's still afraid so he pretends he doesn't know Jake and Amy. Or he's not a legal citizen of the country and he's afraid They would turn him in. I JUST NEEDED MORE MLEPNOS, JAKE AND AMY CONTENT WITH SATISFYING ENDING.
4. More Nutriboom content: They did us so dirty with that man. They made a whole ass episode about nutriboom and the criminal CEO I definitely thought they would continue it. I mean at the very least they could have shown us that nutriboom guy following Jake with such intensity that Jake isn't able to capture some criminal or something. Basically nutriboom is coming in his way to be a good cop. They even show up at Shaw's bar and stuff too annoying Jake into finally making a plan to take them down or something.
5. Rosa content: I loved how they showed Jake’s arc after jail. Actually I really liked the whole jail plot. Showing him in jail and how he had had survive there and that the system is very cruel and not black and white as he thought it wasm and then when he comes back he isn't that chill cool guy anymore. He really thinks before taking a guy to jail. I really loved all that stuff. But excuse me guys there was this one poc character who also went jail with her or did you forget that? She was a women of color, queer and a cop. That has to be hard for her too. Just because she's portrayed as a badass doesn't mean jail was easy for her. I wanted to see that representation so bad.
6. Gina's pregnancy: okay so I know there's a lot of people who don't like Gina. I too have a love-hate relationship with her. But that aside, I definitely think there should have been a whole episode on Gina's pregnancy like something very chaotic happening. The way they did with Sergeant's kid and Amy's pregnancy. Gina deserved that. Also the Boyle she loved, he just disappeared? I mean the guy was shown to be in love with her and they were talking about names and then he's just gone? Give us some backstory atleast.
7. CHARLES DESERVED BETTER: He was so nice and genuine and sweet and fantastic person. I get that he was intense sometimes and also a bit annoying but he was a person who really had his heart on his sleeves. But because he was nice, they all underestimated him. I didn’t like that. I can write literally 10 essays about it. Like how Gina acted disgusted about their fwb situation every single time it came up like it was her own decision to continue that relationship. Or how everybody in the team thought Charles wasn't as smart as them. Or how Jake really didn't treat Charles good enough. He literally cared about every single one of them and held so much compassion. He deserved to be treated like a king man. HE DESERVED BETTER.
So for time being this is my hella arbitrary list on things I  wish they would have shown in B99 which you all bet would keep on extending over time

*You are tuning in to WEXA. The most popular music station of the moment.*
*And this is your program, “The Rhythm of Music”. A program specially made for people who likes music regardless of its genre.*
*I’m your radio host Alex Santiago and today we will have a special segment called “Second Date”.*
*Did you go on a first date with that person you found special and want to ask for a second date? Don’t worry, we’ll help you.*
*Or did you have a first date that you thought was unforgettable but for some reason you didn’t get a second one? We can help you with that too.*
*All radio listeners who call will enter a raffle for an all-included romantic dinner at the “Marseillaise” restaurant. A limousine will pick you up and your companion at your home and take you to your destination.*
*Good luck to all.*
*Let’s start the program with two songs that I believe, without fear of being wrong, are the favorites of many. After these songs we will start with the segment “The Second Date”. So get ready, radio listening friends.*
*And here they are, for all of you, Elley Duhé with “Middle of the Night” followed by Dua Lipa with “Levitating”.*
~~~•~~~~•~~~•~~~~•~~~•~~~~
“I’m sorry Jack, you are very nice and attractive but the truth is that your real date shouldn’t have been with me.”
“I don’t understand Sophia, what do you mean by that? Was I a joke or a dare that your friends asked you to do?”
“Calm down Jack, remember you’re on air. I’m sure Sophia has a good explanation for what she just said. Isn’t that right, Sophia?”
“That’s right, Alex. Jack, the truth is that the one who should have been on that date with you is my sister Rose and not me. Rose had an accident and now she is at home convalescing. She asked me to take her place because we look alike and most of our acquaintances say we could pass for twins. Since it would only be once because she would show up at the next date, I agreed to go in her place. But you’re very nice and cute and you don’t deserve to be lied to, that’s why I’m telling you the truth now. I’m sorry Jack, really.”
“Well Jack, there you have it. I’m sorry that was the answer you got.”
“Don’t worry Alex, I wanted an answer and I got it. Thanks for the help. Goodbye”.
*Now a few messages from our sponsors and when we return more music with Shakira and BZRP, “Music Sessions #53, and Reik featuring Rusherking, “A mi Lado”.*
~~~•~~~~•~~~•~~~~•~~~•~~~~
*Welcome back to all our radio listeners to this your program “The Rhythm of Music”. For those of you who are just joining us right now, I am your radio host Alex Santiago and today we have a very special program because we have a segment called “Second Date”.*
*We already heard several of our radio listeners telling us about their first dates and their reason for wanting to go on a second. Some were successful and others not so much.*
*Now we have here one more radio listener who wants to tell us his story and why he wants a second date.*
“Go ahead pal, you’re on air.”
“First of all, thank you for accepting my call. Unlike the people who called to ask you for help on a second date, I’m not the one who wants to ask for a second date, I’m the one who didn’t show up for the date. But it is not the second one but the first one”.
Alex was shocked by what this guy was saying but he didn’t say anything and let him continue.
“I’m a sergeant in the ******* army, and on the day that was supposed to be our first date, I was called to the military base for an emergency. A helicopter came for me and I headed to my destination. I was out of the country for a year and just returned yesterday. I was unable to communicate with anyone for reasons I cannot discuss on air. But in all this time I never stopped thinking about her for a single moment. I have been longing to see her again and explain to her the reason for my absence.”
“I understand. First of all, thank you for your service. But explain to me better, are you in love with her? How did the both of you meet? Is it something you can tell us?”
“We met at my half brother’s farewell party. My younger sister organized it and invited my half brother’s friends and her friends. I didn’t know there would be a party because I hadn’t been there in a while and just arrived a couple of days back because I had a vacation permit. So during the party I would be on the second floor of the house and the party would take place on the first floor.”
“Everything was going well. I wouldn’t have to interact with anyone if I didn’t want to. About an hour after the party started, while I was in the studio library, the most beautiful being I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting and will meet in my entire life entered.”
“She was perfect”, he laughed a little and continued. “She is perfect. When she entered, she was amazed by all the books on the shelves and immediately went over to look at them.
At first I was upset because no one should be in that part of the house. But seeing her get so excited about the books my annoyance passed and gave way to fun watching how she looked like a little girl in a candy store. She thought aloud when she read the names of the books that I couldn’t resist anymore and spoke up to let her know that she wasn’t alone there.”
“Her reaction was so lovely. She gave a little jump and a little scream. When she turned to look at me, God, I felt the ground move. I was completely blown away. As cheesy as it sounds, it was love at first sight. I decided right then and there that she would be my wife and the mother of my children. When I introduced myself and extended my hand to greet her, I felt an electric current go through my whole body and apparently she felt it too because her eyes widened and she immediately removed her hand from mine”.
“I tried to start a conversation with her but she was very nervous and only gave me short answers. So I thought that talking about books would be a good excuse to talk and get to know each other better.”
“It was a good idea because it gave us the opportunity to talk not only about books but also about ourselves and get to know each other better. Everything she told me seemed interesting to me. All of her is interesting.”
“We spent the whole night until the morning of the next day talking. At no time did I feel that we lacked topics to talk about. That same morning we kissed for the first time and God! It was magical! I felt it in my whole being. We only kissed but I felt like we had connected more intimately than if we had made love.”
“To have left her side without us having the opportunity to start a relationship devastated me enormously. The only thing that motivated me to continue and keep doing my work was the fact that when it was finished, I would be able to see her again. I can only imagine how it affected her the fact that I left without telling her.”
“That’s why I dared to call your program. I want to talk to her and explain what happened. I have not dared to call her for fear that she will hang up on me or that she won’t know who I am and does not answer me. My cell phone number changed when I left but hers is engraved in my memory.”
“If you could help me with this I would be eternally grateful.”
“Oh wow. It is a story that frankly I did not expect. But of course my team and I will help you in whatever way we can”.
The producer signaled to Alex and he nodded in understanding.
“My producer has the cell phone number you gave him at the beginning of your call and he is dialing it right now. But tell me your name first and her name.”
“My name is Sesshomaru Taisho and her name is Kagome Higurashi.”
There was the sound of a phone ringing and a girl’s voice answering the call.
“Yes, hello?”
“Hello, good afternoon. Could I speak to Miss Kagome Higurashi please?”
“This is her. Who do I have the pleasure of talking to?”
“My name is Alex Santiago and I’m calling from WEXA radio station. This is the radio program, “The Rhythm of Music”. How have you been?”
“Um, fine? Sorry, I have no idea what’s the reason for your call and I’m a little confused about it. It is not common to receive these types of calls.” She laughed nervously.
“Of course, my apologies. First of all, do you have a few minutes to talk? I would like to explain to you the reason for my call and I would like you to listen to me until the end. As I said before, I am from a radio program and it will be on air.
“Yes of course. Please continue”.
“Today we have a special segment in the program called “Second Date” and radio listeners call us asking for help. We help them talk to the people they had their first date with and find out if they want to go on a second one.”
“I imagine that with this, you get an idea as to the reason for my call. I have a person on the other end of the call who would like to ask you on a date. This person told us that you and him met at his half-brother’s farewell party and that you spent the whole night talking and getting to know each other better on the second floor of the house where the party was held."
On the other end of the call, they heard Kagome gasping in surprise.
~~~•~~~~•~~~•~~~~•~~~•~~~~
Kagome gasped in surprise and brought a hand to her mouth. Her breathing became agitated. She had to get to her dorm as soon as possible. She ran to her dorm door and opened it. She hurriedly got in and locked it.
She had to sit down because her legs couldn’t hold her anymore. She ran to her bed and sat down. She took a deep breath and asked, “How do you know about that?”
The radio host of the show said, “You can call me Alex, Kagome. I don’t just know that. I also know that it was love at first sight for both of you and that you are soul mates. After all, he hasn’t been able to forget you in all this time.”
“He? What do you mean by 'he'?”
“I’m talking about Sesshomaru, Kagome.” Alex said.
Kagome squeezed her cell phone as a tear rolled down her cheek. “How…” She cleared her throat. She felt a huge lump there and struggled to swallow. “How do you know his name, Alex?”
“Because he’s on the other end of the line and he wants to talk to you.”
Kagome, it’s me. Sesshomaru.” A small sob was heard on the other end of the call.
In the radio station booth where the program was taking place, both the producer and the assistants and Alex himself were completely silent. What should be done in these cases? Stay on air or let them continue in private?
Alex turned to his producer to see if he should continue on air or let them talk in private. The producer signaled for him to continue on air. Alex nodded and continued to pay attention to the conversation. He was willing to help them if necessary.
~~~•~~~~•~~~•~~~~•~~~•~~~~
“Se-Sesshomaru.” Before Kagome could say anything else, Sesshomaru cut her off. “I know this may be sudden but I’d like to talk to you, Kagome.”
“Why now Sesshomaru? Where have you been all this time? Why didn’t you show up for our date?” Kagome asked him, squeezing his phone a little with one hand while the other gripped the edge of her bed in an attempt to stay calm.
“That’s why I want to see you and talk to you, Kagome. I want to explain everything that happened, the reason for my absence and why I didn’t show up for our date that day a year ago”.
“A year and two weeks ago. But who counts the time, right?” She knew she was being a bit sarcastic but she couldn’t help it.
Sesshomaru sighed. “You are right, one year and two weeks. Please allow me to explain everything, Kagome.” His voice was pleading.
“Sesshomaru, I…” her voice cracked a little. “Many things have happened since you left.” She took a deep breath, preparing herself to tell him what happened in his absence.
“When you didn’t show up for our date,” she began. “I thought maybe there was a good reason why you didn’t show up. I waited for you for more than three hours at that place. I don’t even know why I waited so long for you.” She giggled a little, running a hand through her hair. “Then I went home. While there, I replayed the events leading up to the failed date in my head over and over and over again.”
“The next day I did not show up for work. I knew I couldn’t work like this and I slept all day. That was the first time I had nightmares. As the days passed they became more frequent. I could hardly sleep, not to mention eat, I was hardly hungry. I was like this for a couple of months. By then, it was so bad that my best friend had to do an emergency intervention to help me. I was self-destructing and I hadn’t realized it”.
“I went to therapy with a psychologist and was diagnosed with mild depression. They gave me treatment and with the help of my loved ones I managed to get out of it.” She finished with a sigh.
“I’m so sorry you went through that because of me, Kagome. Just, let me explain everything that happened. Why I left without telling you anything.” Sesshomaru told her in a pleading tone.
Kagome was about to reply when Alex interrupted them. “Kagome, the production of the show and I, would like to give you guys a chance to talk calmly and in private. I think the two of you deserve to clear things up between you. The ending will be decided by the two of you, but I honestly think it’s worth hearing what Sesshomaru has to say.”
“So we decided to give you guys a dinner date at an exclusive restaurant, all paid for of course. Limousine transportation included. You just have to accept to talk to Sesshomaru,” Alex concluded.
“There is something else you need to know before I give you my answer, Sesshomaru.” Kagome was nervous but she didn’t want to lie to him so she told him the truth. “I am in a relationship with someone, Sesshomaru. He is a good guy and he helped me a lot. When I needed it most, he was there. I’m actually engaged to him. Just a week ago we got engaged and I don’t think it’s right for you and me to go on a date.”
Kagome wanted to accept the invitation, she really did. She needed to know what really happened, but she was afraid that her feelings for him might be reflected in her eyes when the two of them were finally facing each other.
“Give Sesshomaru a chance to explain everything to you, Kagome. I assure you that you will not regret it. Just tell your boyfriend that it’s important that you talk to him.” Alex intervened before either of them could say anything else. The producer gave him the good job sign with both of his hands.
“Kagome. I don’t care that you’re engaged. I still want to talk to you. Please just say yes.” Sesshomaru begged.

Sesshomaru felt like he was floating on clouds as he heard Kagome speak after not hearing her voice in a long time.
He thought that perhaps she had changed her cell phone number but he was glad when he saw that she hadn’t. That meant he had a chance to talk to her.
The feeling of floating among the clouds was diminishing at Kagome’s words. She had suffered because of him, of that he was sure. He felt his heart clench as Kagome told him everything she had been through.
If only he had had time to tell her, to explain why he would not show up. But his father did not give in, he didn’t give him permission to make a call or send at least a message explaining why he would not show up for the date. If he had done it, things wouldn’t be the way they are right now. Kagome wouldn’t have suffered so much because of him and she wouldn’t be engaged to another man.
He cursed his father in every language he knew. Thanks to him, his life was turned upside down. If he couldn’t convince Kagome to talk to him and clear everything up, he’d beat him to a pulp regardless of whether he was his father.
He felt how his heart had broken when Kagome told him that she was engaged to someone else. But he would not give up. She wasn’t married to her fiancé yet, so he still had a chance to do something. And he definitely would, even if it meant involving his father to do it.
He listened as Kagome sighed, and held his breath. Kagome had to agree to that date. He asked the heavens for a chance to make things right. That was all he needed, to be able to talk to her, he would take care of the rest.
“Alright. I agreed to go on that date, but I swear to God if you don’t show up you won’t hear from me again, Sesshomaru.” She said it with a tone of finality.
Sesshomaru's heart lurched in his chest. She said yes. She had said yes. He turned his gaze to the sky and thanked for the opportunity.
“Thank you Kagome. I promise you will not regret anything. I won’t let you down, I swear.”
~~~•~~~~•~~~•~~~~•~~~•~~~~
At the radio station everyone was celebrating Sesshomaru's success. They didn’t know him and yet they wanted it to work between him and Kagome.
“I’m glad you agreed to give Sesshomaru a chance, Kagome. The both of you deserve to clear things up and be happy.” He straightened up in his chair and continued speaking. “My producer will talk to you about the details of your dinner date. Thank you very much for calling the show and allowing us to help you, Sesshomaru. And thank you Kagome, for agreeing to talk to him.”
The two thanked him in the same way and were transferred to talk to the producer of the program to finish up the details of where their date would be.
On the other side of the production booth, Alex Santiago ended the program with more music.
Can I get your thoughts on Benny celebrating his secret crush's birthday? Because I think he'd trying to set up an party with the guys but have them leave early so he could get a little alone time with her to give her a sweet thoughtful gift.
Ahhhh I love this, nonnie!
I'm feeling so soft at the idea of Benny asking her what her plans for her birthday are, and he's beside himself when she casually brushes him off and tells him that she was just planning to order out and spend the night on the couch. That just won't do, not in Benny Miller's book.
Benny quickly jumps into action by organizing a party for her with the guys. They're all equally amused at how downright flustered he is in his attempts to make sure everything's perfect. Plenty of heckling and teasing ensues in their group chat as Benny's in drill sergeant mode listing off who needs to pick up what food and supplies.
For all that Benny's normally able to keep his cool around her, he's suddenly incredibly nervous at the party, because he can't stop overthinking if perhaps the gift he got her is too obvious. Too personal. Too much.
Before the evening fully winds down, Benny's nerves have gotten the best of him. He ends up subtly corralling Frankie, Will, and Santiago from the house—the latter barking a complaint as Benny unceremoniously tosses a paper towel over his still-full paper plate of food and nearly shoves him out the door.
Nerves thrumming wildly in his chest, Benny awkwardly gives her the gift once the boys have left, inwardly cursing himself for not asking Frankie and his steady hands to redo his shoddy wrapping job. As she opens it, Benny tries to play off the present as no big deal—but her heart is fit to burst out of her chest at the thoughtfulness of the gesture. At the fact that he'd paid such close attention to her to know this would be something she'd absolutely love.
And in that moment, she realizes that perhaps her crush isn't so one-sided after all.
Chicago Justice Season 1 Ep. 8 "Lily's Law"
Tumblr media
After a guilty verdict is delivered, a juror in the case is found dead in a lake. The team investigates and finds out that she committed suicide due to being cyberstalked and heavily harassed. Stone does everything in his power to bring the responsible person to justice.
If you want to watch the series for yourself, stop reading! This post contains spoilers to the storyline.
Lily Spencer is expressing her exhaustion after five weeks of trial and now facing the pressure of jury deliberations. Peter Stone objects to starting deliberations over again, but the judge reminds them that serving on a jury is a duty, not a vacation. The defendant was found guilty by the jury and will be remanded until sentencing. After the court adjourns, Lily runs out of the jury box.
At a bar, Anna Valdez asks Stone about the wall in the office that displays clothing. Stone explains that when an ASA wins their first trial, a piece of their clothing is hung on the wall. She laughs at his bow tie. Stone receives a call to go to a crime scene.
Laura Nagel and Antonio Dawson reveal that Lily Spencer was found in the water with the summons for jury duty in her wallet. There are no visible bruises, and it appears she was dumped in the water while still alive. Stone kneels beside her corpse and says, "Maybe I should have let you go."
Tumblr media
Stone meets with Mark Jefferies at the ASA office. Jefferies warns that if jurors are being killed, they will never see another jury. Stone suggests bringing in CPD's Sergeant Hank Voight, but Jefferies wants him to lead the investigation. He also orders unmarked police cars to follow the other jurors until they solve the case.
Antonio and Laura visit Santiago Mendoza, the defendant's brother. After Antonio unplugs his saw, he informs them that Miguel Lopez is a sick person. They should investigate him because he went to extreme measures to ensure his brother, Ricardo, didn't testify against them at trial.
Miguel flees when Antonio arrives to see him. Antonio chases him, while Laura follows in their vehicle. They handcuff him and question him about threatening Mrs. Mendoza. When they show him a photo of Lily, he recognizes her as the juror.
Tumblr media
During a conversation with Antonio and Laura, Mr. Evans admits to consoling Lily during an argument in the parking lot. When Laura informs him of Lily's death, he immediately blames the punk kids. Despite his fear as the foreman of the jury, Antonio assures him that protection is already in place. According to Santiago, Lily was becoming increasingly agitated by her text messages. When they were asked to turn off their phones, Lily insisted on keeping hers on, claiming that there would be consequences if she didn't. Although he believed it was a private matter, it clearly was not. The final message read, "It's either the jury or your kid. Last chance!"
Antonio and Laura visit Jaxson Clark, with whom she shares a child. He learns that Lily passed away two days prior and he mentions they were the ones who coerced her into serving on the jury. Jaxson Clark asks if they have the guy in custody. Laura wonders why he didn't find it strange that he didn't receive a text from her in two days. He acknowledges that the text may have sounded bad, but they must understand that he is also busy and tired of explaining to his child, Sam, what jury duty entails. They find out that Jaxson has a boat and that he took it out two nights ago. Laura retrieves a hoodie from the boat and discovers that the keys in the pocket belong to Lily.
The keys are used to search Lily's apartment. Laura quickly finds a photo that proves the hoodie belongs to Sam. Antonio finds an eviction notice dated for the night Lily was killed.
Tumblr media
According to the manager, Lily was his favourite tenant, and the owners were evicting her because she was three months behind in rent. She only got the place because her sister, Sarah, co-signed.
Sarah's wife reveals that Sarah passed away three months ago. She promised to take care of Lily, who used to be an assistant professor until Jaxson Clark came into her life. She shares stories of visiting Jaxson and Lily. He was very controlling and refused to let her work while they were together. They learned that Jaxson was stalking her, and the last time he did so was just before the trial by the river where they scattered Sarah's ashes.
Tumblr media
Antonio and Laura walk along the riverside, but no one seems to have seen anything. They come across a fraternity that dresses up, drinks and runs while recording everything they do. In one of the videos, Laura and Stone watch as Lily takes a couple of steps and jumps into the freezing river, ultimately killing herself.
The next day, Anna informs Stone that the ME's report concluded that Lily drowned, with her lungs filled with river water and no signs of bruising. Stone is left wondering how Lily managed to duct tape her own hands and is eager to find any evidence to charge Jaxson Clark with stalking her.
Tumblr media
Anna commented that if she had an ex who took her to court as often as Jaxson did to Lily, she might consider drastic measures herself. Laura is furious because she feels Jaxson didn't even want the child, but he did it only so Lily didn't have him. He even filed five motions of abuse against her. Antonio said he will talk to Sam, while Laura goes to DCFS.
DCFS worker Chad Parker tells Laura that Lily is a good mother, but he cannot ignore complaints because it is his job to protect the child. He explains that during a safety check, Lily had a cast on her arm and claimed she had fallen down the stairs. Although he has no evidence that Jaxson caused the injury, he knows that Jaxson wanted full custody and Lily was not willing to give him up. Laura suggests that he should have taken action.
Laura vents to Anna about her situation with DCFS. Anna advises against marriage. Anna prioritizes a husband over having kids, surprising Laura. They drive tho Chicago Med.
Antonio wants to talk to Sam. Sam's dad is late as usual. Antonio asks Sam if his mother ever hit him, but before Sam can answer, Jaxson arrives and roughly grabs Sam, causing Antonio to react. Antonio drops Jaxson to the ground with his arm behind his back after Jaxson shoves him. Sam pleads with Antonio to stop.
At Chicago Med, they discover that Lily had drugs in her system and was fortunate that someone called 911 when they did. The nurse explains that Lily was pretty doped up and probably broke her arm falling out of the bath, but luckily, that was the only injury she sustained.
Anna returns to the office and shows Stone the information she gathered. She is visibly upset, stating that she feels harassed, and possibly even stalked. Stone wonders if Jaxson knew about her first suicide attempt. Anna believes that Jaxson's behaviour is unacceptable and that there are laws against stalking and harassment for a reason.
Laura and Antonio return to Jaxson's workplace to arrest him. He is very confident, telling his assistant that he will be back within the hour. At the ASA office, Jaxson's attorney, Miranda, jokes that she has discovered great restaurants through Jaxson's app and cannot have him sent to prison. Jaxson requests a find and the opportunity to return home to his child. He presents a video of Antonio forcing him to the ground, which appears to be an act of brutality. Stone suggests him to put the phone away. Stone offers Jaxson a plea deal of two years and anger management classes. Anna mentions the 1500 harassing and threatening texts in just three months. The person responsible denies fault for Lily's eventual suicide and even made fun of her. Stone reminds Jaxson that they should have taken the two-year sentence and now they are being charged with Lily's murder.
Jefferies asks Stone if he is out of his mind. Stone admits he is pushing it, but he believes he is the direct cause of her death. He knew she was suicidal, and it was like knowing she opened the exploding letter. Stone clarifies that he is not writing new law, he is just stretching the old ones.
Tumblr media
During the court proceedings, Stone presents an expert who testifies that emotional abuse could directly cause suicide. During the questioning by Jaxson's lawyer, the expert witness stated that Lily's suicide could have been caused by various factors in her life, and she could not definitively attribute it to Jaxson's behaviour.
Tumblr media
Later, Grace Kelman, the widow of Sarah, testified that Jaxson was responsible for Lily's first suicide attempt and had made derogatory comments about those who cannot even kill themselves. Lily sent a text to Grace, stating that she would not be able to continue living if her sister passed away.
Stone and Jefferies exit the office, with Stone expressing concern about the upcoming testimony of 9-year-old Sam. Despite not having complete legal support, Stone believes the jury is on his side. Jefferies advises him to be gentle with Sam.
During the court hearing, Sam showed a scar on his body and explained that it was caused by an incident at his father's house. However, his father prevented him from contacting his mother, claiming that she did not pay the phone bill. Sam constantly looked at his father when answering questions. Stone urged him to continue, and Sam mentioned that he did not have to pay for Snapchat. Miranda attempted to halt the questioning but her previous actions had already allowed the court to view Sam's phone. Sam was recorded screaming about how horrible his mother was and expressing a desire to live with his father. Although his father was present during the recording, Sam later admitted that he did not mean what he said. Stone stands between Sam and his father, obscuring Sam's view of him. Upon rewinding the video, Stone notices that Sam's arms were down at his side, Stone reassures Sam that he is not in trouble, but asks him to identify who was holding the phone. Sam breaks down and admits that his father forced him to send it, even though he didn't want to. He cries and asks if he is responsible for his mother's death. Stone reassures him that it is not his fault.
Jaxson Clark has been found guilty of murder. However, the judge stopped and accused the jury of making an emotional decision. Stone objected, but the judge told him to sit down. The judge stated that the jury ignored her instructions and forced her to disregard their decision. She explained that the prosecution failed to prove that Jaxson knew his actions would result in Lily's death. Therefore, she set aside the verdict and dismissed the jury. Jaxson appeared pleased, while Anna was furious.
Tumblr media
Stone is upset that Jaxson is getting a free pass. He recalls a similar situation with a college friend where he failed to act. He stands up and declares that laws must change. Jefferies challenges him to make the change.
Stone meets with senators to discuss the Illinois murder statute, specifically regarding emotional abuse leading to suicide. He also discusses the case of Lily Spencer. After the meeting, he visits Cora, his college friend from years ago, to apologize. She invites him insde.
