So yesterday, a bunch of people started receiving what looked to be scam from group called entertainmintco. We got notified by @adoptourcrew and @saveofmdcrewmates of it earlier in the day:

Warnings were sent out, and people from the leadership teams started getting serious with this group, but luckily it looks like it was a mistake that entertainmintco was willing to admit to.

They then put out a statement explaining the situation, and donated $1000 to an LGBTQIA+ Supportive NonProfit: Rainbow Railroad for the trouble they'd caused.

Annnd they also shared our petition!

So overall, everything turned out okay! Definitely a weird one! But $1000 donation to supporting LGBTQIA+? Fantastic! Seriously poision into positivity. Thank you @AdoptOurCrew, @saveofmdcrewmates, and @LCWebsXOXO especially for turning that scam into splendor!

I never really thought about my actions often, but in a good way. Obviously I would know if I accidentally hurt someone, like any other average human being would do. But I never ever thought about my personality and it's own actions.

Ever since I was in first grade, my parents, friends and even teachers would describe me as someone with a "flirtatious, bubbly" personality. That never really got to me, and I found it funny. I mean, it does make sense, as I literally used "bubbly" in my Twitch username for when I stream. I do have to say, it's quite useful when streaming, as it keeps me engaged with my chat. That's what I enjoyed about myself. But I guess my chat didn't that day.

joe goes by any pronouns, or last time he talked about it - okay last time he talked about it I think the answer was “for branding reasons I’d prefer you always call me joehillstsd on youtube dot com, and then personally I’d prefer you not refer to me at all”. so make of that as you will,

but more seriously, yes, last time he needed to list his pronouns, he said “any pronouns” (I believe it was for mercy road last year when he was playing d&d). his stated reasoning is that he doesn’t like telling people want to call him and the idea of explicitly listing his pronouns makes him uncomfortable, so when he realized “any” was allowed for circumstances where he needs to list them, he used that.

generally, though, joe doesn’t list his pronouns unless he’s in an event where everyone else is and will dodge the question on stream the way he dodges most questions, so there’s that as well, and that’s probably why there’s not much mention of it elsewhere!

I am nearly asleep and don’t have the clips immediately on hand, but he goes into more detail on this on the crafting stream after that mercy road stream. (if someone else has the specific vod or clips, feel free to link it.)

anyway, i can’t speak on behalf of anyone else, but i (a trans man) am slightly bothered by kevin playing hogwarts legacy. on one hand, yeah harry potter games are a staple on his channel, but him being sponsored by warner bros to play it kinda concerns me.

yes, kevin’s donated to many charities and has been considered an LGBTQIA+ ally for years but i don’t really know how to feel. i don’t believe he deserves all the hate he’s receiving but i do think he needs to realize that him playing this game has upset a large portion of his community and has also brought in a large audience of people who certainly don’t need to be in his comments.

ive been watching kevin’s content for about 6 years now (i’m old ik), his harry potter content is actually what got me into his channel in the first place, and you can tell i still adore his content by my username. i am trying to leave that out of this but i am still holding out hope that kevin donates the money he makes to charity or does something to redeem this.

however, like i said earlier, i don’t think kevin deserves all this hate. if he were the one to make the comments JK Rowling did, i would be all for this, but he didnt. im not exactly sure how sponsorships on youtube work, but i don’t think kevin himself paid for the game. and i know that doesn’t make much of a difference, but that was a large part of what people were upset at him over in the comments i saw.

i also saw people say that he was platforming the game. while this is true, there have been countless ads plastered across youtube, and other sites or streaming services. this game is getting publicity either way.

in regards to the unwanted crowd i mentioned earlier, i saw many MANY racist and transphobic comments on todays video and it seriously shocked me. ive been a part of kevin’s youtube community for 3 years now, and ive always seen the comments full of positivity. but today? there was hardly any. it was seriously heartbreaking to see this happen.

i’m sure this wasn’t intended, but it really hurt seeing a community built upon such positivity be taken down via a single video about a game. a community i had felt safe in for years was being invaded by crazy right-wing “anti-woke” people and all i could do was watch in horror.

i truly, truly hope that kevin takes accountability and does ANYTHING to redeem this.

Fujin has always been fascinated with internet as soon as he was introduced to it. The idea that mortals can share so many things with other mortals through a screen makes him so happy about the progress humanity has made. But mostly, the "memes" are hilarious even if he doesn't understand half of it.

The concept that you are really popular on the internet both made him feel proud of you and concerned for you at the same time. Of course "concern" being mostly jealousy, but as easy as it comes, easy as it goes. Such as the wind he commands.

When you said that you were planning to do a "charity live stream" event, fujin wanted to know everything about it. He always loved how generous and kind you were.

If fujin had some free time (which he has more of than his brother, but you're not sure if it's because raiden has more responsibilities or just takes them more seriously) he'd ask you if there was anything he could help you with.

And as a matter of fact, you did include him in your plans for the livestream. You custom made him a v-tuber avatar to match with yours. You nervously asked him if it was ok to make him a white fox wearing his outfit. Fujin was so ecstatic over the virtual matching outfits he kissed you as a response.

Needless to say, you raised 500 over the intended goal. And you trended as "top 5 cutest tuber couples" for months.

Liu kang:

Liu kang knew of "tuber" stuff, he just didn't really have an interest in knowing more. However when he found out that you were quite popular as a "v-tuber" he watched one of your streams and was glad he did. Liu saw you in a whole new light, you were so passionate in entertainment it was almost as close as Johnny cage. However, biased as liu might be, you were FAR better than the actor. With no offense to Johnny cage..

When he heard you were doing a charity stream he was more than happy to not only watch, but donate a little bit himself. Liu admired that, despite being popular, you never let fame get to your head. And instead use it to do good.

Liu kang couldn't help but have the biggest smile on his face when you gave him a shout out and committed to a whole half hour bit of you gushing over him. Which is where you originally intended to end the stream after the goal was met but since you saw his name in the donations you went a bit off track.

Kung lao:

Kung lao has only ever used the internet for two things, to look up what some English words mean (liu kang had always been farther ahead of him with the nuance of english, specifically one time looking up what "nuance" ment in mandarin. Translation is a nightmare) and listen to music.

When you mentioned you were a "v-tuber" and had to explain it to him. Kung lao indulged to see one of your livestreams. And just when the monk thought he couldn't get any more smitten with you, he swears he's going to marry you. Eventually.

When you mentioned you were doing a charity, kung lao was not only extremely supportive. He mentioned it whenever it was appropriate. Needless to say you were shocked at how many donations were coming in. With so many supportive messages, you nearly started to cry when, at the last leg of the donation goal, an anonymous donator not only fulfilled the charity goal, it broke it by thousands. And you knew who it was by the donation message alone, you've been around the hot shot celebrity/earthrealm warrior Johnny cage long enough to know exactly how he talks even in text.

After the event you went to thank kung lao for spreading the word. Kung lao tried to be humble about it, but you kissing him just made him propose to you on the spot.

Regardless of your answer then and there. Kung lao is just happy and blessed he met such a beautiful soul like you.

Rain:

Rain is a bit confused about using earthrealm's "internet" but even he had to admit it was extremely useful. And also extremely annoying. No wifi in outworld nor edenia sucks.

Rain often has to visit you just to use it. And that's how he learned you were a "v-tuber". He never thought you were the "idol" type, but when he watched you do your live stream in real time, you had so much confidence and passion in acting out as your "internet persona". Rain thought he couldn't fall harder for you, and for once he wasn't mad when he was wrong.

When you casually mentioned a charity livestream to support earthrealm's wildlife. Rain took that as a grand gesture to display his affections to you. Of course he gets a bit offended when you get the donation, and not recognize him. Although rain reflects that maybe he should have told you his username was "trueroyalrainpurple" before hand. (All the ones he wanted were already taken, rain is so annoyed with the internet)

Regardless you're happy you fulfilled your goals and give rain a big kiss before, and after he tells you that he made the big donation to surpass the goal.

Nightwolf:

Nightwolf is confused and annoyed why people are surprised that he knows how to program, let alone know how to use the internet. Must be some sort of stupid sterotyping. Regardless he absolutely supports your "v-tuber" career. When he can, he has helped you troubleshoot a game or "technical issues" more than once.

You have begged him to join you at least once during your livestreams. But unfortunately he never has the time. But this time he does, and you both decided on a charity stream. He even designs a matching v-tuber avatar with you. Although you are a bit jealous his is so much cooler looking than yours, which nightwolf laughs and kisses your cheek endearingly.

The moment you exceed the goal you share a "virtual tuber kiss" that has the internet talking for several months. Many clamor for nightwolf to become a v-tuber like you, unfortunately he has far too many responsibilities to even try something like this again. Perhaps in a different life when the realms aren't in jeopardy every 5 gods damn days.

Hi, I'm Loo(or Alex), I'm a disabled queer artist and writer as well as a furry vtuber who streams four days a week on twitch(mostly Minecraft but also Soulsborne games and a variety of other stuff).

You may know me from The Tuna Post, in which several thousand of you came together to "force" me to buy damn near $30 American Dollars worth of imported fancy canned tuna to eat and review live on stream. You and Kenma had been close for a while. Being friends online was difficult at times, that part was easy to admit to yourselves, but having to find time within each other's schedules to talk and play games together was impossible sometimes-- Until you decided to say "fuck it" and start streaming, following in Kenma's footsteps. Over the past few years, Kenma had become the most successful streamer on YouTube since it was a fairly new platform for live streaming which gave him ample room to build a fanbase while doing whatever he wanted without the political strings that came with contracts on other platforms like Twitch. You, however, were anything but famous like him. Though you streamed here and there at first, when you decided to take it seriously in order to make it a living, you felt somewhat lost in what to do without relying on Kenma to give you views and subscribers.

However, Kenma was your best friend. It had been that way since long before he was ever famous. To you, he was still that shy kid who liked to hole himself up in his bedroom to play video games or watch anime all day; and he'd jump into VC with you whenever you were free. Now, he could see how much it meant to you to stream, because it was so obvious on your bright face every time you gained a new subscriber or earned even a single dollar donation-- You just wanted to make people's day. Money, vanity, popularity, who could give a fuck about any of that when you could entertain the 50-100 daily viewers you got on your own? He just wanted to help you out... If you could be that happy with such a small following, only Kenma could imagine the change you could bring about with a following like his.

So he invited you over one day to stream with him.

The plan was that you'd play some co-op and competitive LAN games like Star Wars Battlefront 2 and Mario Kart Wii respectively. Kenma plugged your stream by mentioning you in the title of his own, and he linked you in the description, on his socials, and even in his bio on YouTube. Why the hell he was going above and beyond for you, you weren't exactly sure; but this was Kenma, he was a sweet guy who cared a lot about his friends-- Who were you to say no to something he was so clearly excited about?

"No shot you're bumping me off the shortcut!" Kenma exclaimed irritably.

You grinned.

The two of you were three races deep in a four-race Grand Prix, which meant that this race was the decider of who would win after he was winning by only a few points since the cows on Moo-Moo Meadows seemed to favor him for some unknown reason. You were so relieved when the game randomly chose Mushroom Gorge as the last map. It was easy for you to get 1st on that map. Throughout your entire childhood, you had been preparing for this moment by going up against anyone who would entertain the idea of playing the same map over and over again, giving you the opportunity to memorize the perfect routes. Jump spots, wheelie lines, shortcuts, etc. were all necessary to get a huge lead on that map. And you knew it all by heart.

Kenma was struggling to keep up with you. He knew everything you knew, it came naturally to him since the two of you had played before and he learned it all from you just by watching the way you played; yet he couldn't seem to break away from you to maintain his spot in first place. The two of you kept exchanging the lead every turn or so. Finally, though, on the third and final lap, as the two of you took the shortcut on the last group of mushrooms, you used the banana you were carrying behind you to bump Kenma off the shortcut, which led to him falling into the abyss, resetting him to the jump before the mushrooms.

There was your lead. You could see the finish line just past the goombas.

The cheer of you winning rang through the speakers of his PC set up.

You looked over at chat who were laughing at Kenma who was trying to not fall further back into sixth place, while also cheering you on for doing it, for beating the best gamer on YouTube.

"Too damn easy, Kozume," you teased.

He finally passed the finish line, earning him sixth place in the race, second place overall in the Grand Prix.

Chat was spamming the emoji known as "Kek" in response to the way Kenma was frowning.

"I hate you..." he grumbled. "I had that... If you didn't knock me off, I would'a won."

You laughed. "It was a valiant effort, I must admit. But it wasn't enough."

As you reached down to the ground to grab your water bottle, Kenma was following you with his eyes, squinting angrily, and when you looked back up, your faces were extremely close. You gulped.

"Sore loser..."

Kenma wasn't smiling. "I could'a won that." He was inching closer and closer. "Rematch."

"We've been streaming for five hours, Kenma."

Without thinking twice, he reached over to the Stream Deck on his desk and pressed the button to end his stream. You were still staring at one another, his breath hot on your nose, his lip twitching before suddenly, without any warning or hint as to what he was going for, Kenma pounced. His lips smashed against yours. He dropped the Wii controller so that he could lace his fingers in your hair. He pulled in order to bring you closer. He melted into you when you started kissing him back.

"Kenm..." Your words were muffled by his desperation.

"I would'a won," he mumbled.

You rolled your eyes and kissed him harder-- Your best friend! The two of you were making out, something that was probably obvious to everyone who had been watching before Kenma abruptly ended his stream.

"Rematch... Later..." you replied.

Kenma smirked before pulled you onto his lap, the two of you fighting to speed things up before you'd die of unbearable need.

At first she just kinda popped into chat and on stream rarely and he never forced her to stay if she didn't. Over time she just got used to and wanted to interact with chat more! YEAH ok so about the kristin thing at first so recently i've been watching all of phil's s4 videos and i'm getting to the end of 2019 aka they're preparing for their wedding and phil's in the process of getting a visa and it's so :))

i currently have two kristin stream vods in my watch later (bc i've been busy) and im so excited to get to themm it's been awesome to see kristin get more confident in streaming bc she is so funny!! i really love tuning into her streams they are such nice spaces :) also i miss parents sdv i hope they play again

ANYWAYS ok so my ramblings about phil's community is just. hold on i need to put this under cut because the more i write out the more it feels like inane bullshit but whatever we're here now

i feel like out of all of the streamers who have grown their communities in the boom of 2020/dsmp era phil's has been the most interesting to me. obviously biased here bc this is my community but ok. I'm not going to say that phil's fanbase is "the best" because that's obviously a subjective take but i think part of what makes it stand out to me is that it skews significantly older than any of the other streamers fanbases. routinely, we've heard from donos that there are teachers or people with full jobs who are donating to phil's streams. now, obviously we've heard plenty from high school age and younger, but for the most part those people tend to be sbi fans, or crimeboys fans who also enjoy phil - totally valid, etc, but they're not who i'm talking about.

the people who main phil tend to be older, which shapes a pretty different community that has a much less active presence on places like twitter. Those who are on twitter tend to not have nearly as much of a drive for clout as other subtwts - obviously there are exceptions, there always are, im trying not to speak as a total generalization - but i can't think of too many c!phil mains with thousands upon thousands of followers compared to other subtwts. And i think that again mostly comes down to like . it's just an older fanbase so they don't care abt that stuff as much.

oh and also! early gang as a central hub for most people who main phil i think helps a lot because, similar to tumblr, no character limit directly correlates to like. more critical thinking being used and less automatic aggression towards other people in the way twitter pushes to the forefront of every interaction. so as a whole the community comes across as far more chill than other subtwts/etc bc they aren't using twitter as their primary hub of communication

but i also think phil has had a direct impact on how his fans act on twitter regardless of age. the example that immediately comes to mind is when uh. ok. so idk if u were on twitter at all circa late 2020-early 2021, but subtwt selfie days were Alllll the rage back then, there was basically one or multiple every single day of the month for various ccs and duos/groups/etc. and i remember when it started popping off, phil got asked about it on stream and he very seriously talked about how he wasn't comfortable having a selfie day tagged after him, because he didn't like the fact that so many people, many who were high school age/teenagers, were putting their face on the internet for literally anyone to look at. i think he was the only cc who really spoke out about the ramifications of having your face online like that, and i know for me it was the first time i took a step back and went "yeah wait this is kind of fucking weird". it obviously didn't stop the selfie days for any other ccs, or the sbi selfie day, but his fans listened, and there was no phil selfie day ever again, and i think it's that kind of communication between phil and his audience that sort of helped develop his community in that direction, being mindful of internet bullshit and all that jazz. it's that kind of way he looks out for fans and the like that makes me really appreciate him and his community all the more. i just really like telling that bit of his history bc it was important to me in that time

again i don't know if this makes . too much sense. i sort of just started rambling and didn't stop to think if i was making any real points. this is all just to say that i love early gang, love philza, loveposting hours are so real i love this old man

"Who is FireFox?"

His chat whent crazy about him not knowing FireFox

"What's so special about this 'Firefox'?"

The chat keeps spamming messages like: "FireFox is the best!" And "POG FireFox" until a donation came

"The Great Fundy doesn't know me..? That's sad"

"I should probably search up this FireFox. They seem important."

He yells at the Vc, but it's too late. Wilbur is already gone.

He gets a text from Firefox

"Elloo! Why is Wilbur spamming me?"

He texts back immediately.

"Uhm... yeah... about that..."

He looks a bit nervous.

"Well... he kind of has a theory about us..."

Then a sound came up on his PC

FireFox is calling you

He picks up the call.

"Oh... hello again."

His voice sounds quite nervous.

"What did you mean a theory?"

"Uh..."

He takes a deep breath.

"Well... uh... he thinks that I... uh... might have a... crush on you."

He flushes and looks down at the ground, embarrassed.

she chuckled

"Do you?"

"Um... I... uh..."

He sighs, thinking.

He blushes even more.

"N... no... I mean... uh...

He trails off.

He looks nervous.

she smirked

"Nah Wilbur is just being crazy, I mean we're like nemesis?"

"Um... yeah... totally... he's crazy..."

He looks down at his desk, thinking.

I... uhm... I mean... it's just... you're really... nice...

He trails off.

What am I saying...? I'm being crazy too...

"How can you think I'm nice? I annoy you every second when I have the change to do?"

"Uh... I mean... you beat me at Minecraft with amazing skill, and... you're really funny... and..."

He looks up at the ceiling, embarrassed.

He is clearly surprised.

He says quietly. He turns off his pc and lays down in bed.

He stares at the ceiling, unable to stop thinking about Firefox.

I ran home at a speed I never reached before without feeling fatigued. I stopped directly in front of the apartment door, unable to find the courage to walk in. How was I going to face my roommates and tell them that I had turned into the monster that killed our friend, Kai? I felt my newly sharpened canines scratch the inside of my mouth and I shivered. That was proof that it was real. That I was really a monster.

I grabbed my phone from my pocket and shakily held it in my hands. I stared at Taehyun's contact, terrified of what may happen if I confessed to him. But I called him anyway. He was the only one I could trust.

"Hey, what's up," His voice triggered a stream of tears to fall. I was sobbing on the phone, "Woah, are you okay? Why are you crying?"

"I-I'm scared," I stammered, "I don't want you to see me."

"Did something happen?"

And I cried even more. Not only did something happen, but in a matter of seconds, in a moment of naivety, I drank something that would change the entire trajectory of my life.

"You didn't say it, but you meant it, right?"

"Meant what?"

"That you wouldn't l-leave me or push me away."

"Of course I meant that, Beomgyu."

"Even if I'll never be able to give you a warm hug again? Even if my skin lost its color," I cried even harder, hugging myself, "Even if I live long enough to see your grandkids have grandkids?"

Just then, the door swung open. I looked up to see a very worried Taehyun. I watched his eyes take me in, how his expression dropped the more he realized.

"I'm a vampire," I shuddered, "Hyunjin turned me."

With that Taehyun just took me into a hug. He held me so tightly and let me cry to him. He led me to his room and laid me down. I cradled myself into a ball as he rubbed my back and comforted me.

"Do you wanna talk about it?" He asked, but I remained silent, "Did you want to be turned into a–."

"Why would I want to be a bloodthirsty monster? He turned me against my will." I yelled.

"Why would he do that?"

"He said he did it to protect me."

There's a bit of silence between us. Perhaps he was making sense of all of this in his head. But I didn't have the strength to look at him and find out for myself.

"Sometimes people do some really messed up things for people they love. Or claim to love..." He said, "My mom did some questionable things as well."

"Are you seriously defending Hyunjin right now?" I asked accusingly as I whipped my head around.

"No, I'm not defending my mom either. They both have a weird way of showing their love," Taehyun muttered, "I'm sorry this happened to you. But at least you can defend yourself against Felix if he comes around again."

Suddenly, all the tension in my body released itself. Taehyun was entirely right. The tension began to come back the more I remembered that I wouldn't have to defend myself from Felix if Hyunjin never crossed him in the first place. If he never gave Felix a reason to be jealous, I wouldn't have to fight him.

"Screw them both."

I woke up with a soft plushie snug in my arms. When I looked down, I noticed that it was Kai's stuffed penguin that I snagged from the donation box yesterday. I turned my head over my shoulder to take a look at his old bed. It was truly empty. No plushies, no blankets, no Kai.

Taehyun wasn't in bed of course. I debated on staying in longer and wallowing in my self pity. I decided against it, since I knew I'd have to face Soobin and Yeonjun eventually.

I felt nothing when the soles of my feet didn't freeze on contact with the tiled floor. I was colder. I walked out of the room and saw Soobin and Yeonjun in the kitchen brewing coffee. Soobin craned his gaze over to me very slowly and nervously. I wish I wasn't a monster so he could look at me without feeling so much fear. I was just as nervous as he was, clinging onto the beads on the bracelet as a sensory tool to ground me.

When I locked eyes with him, I knew that he knew. Taehyun must've told them.

"Hey, guys."

"Hey." Yeonjun muttered.

"I know you guys might think that I'm some dangerous monster now, but I- I'm not. I didn't even want this."

"We know," Soobin said softly, "And we're really sorry that he turned you."

"If Felix comes back, it won't be a fight because I'm never seeing Hyunjin again. There's nothing to be jealous over..." I ranted briefly, awkwardly silencing the two, "I need some air. I think I'll go out and see if I run into Tae."

"Don't go out there," Yeonjun interjected, "Unless you wanna carry around an umbrella and out yourself."

"What?”

"It's pretty bright out." Soobin said lowly, refusing to make eye contact with me.

I looked at the window past the living room. The blinds were shut, but I saw rays of sunshine peaking through the cracks. For the first time, in the month that I've been living here, it was sunny. Then I looked down at my own pale hands. It was then that I realized that I couldn't go outside freely anymore.

The spell still must've been broken despite The council executing Niki.

"I see... I'll just wait for him to get back then."

Quite conveniently, the door unlocked and in came Taehyun with his face in his phone. He ripped out his Airpod and looked up at us with an expression I haven't seen from him before. He looked directly at me and reading his thoughts couldn't prepare me for what we were about to hear.

"Six humans found dead this morning."

My heart dropped to the pit of my stomach.

"There's no way," I shuttered, "Th-they killed him."

They were all silent, looking at me, watching me try to piece together the truth in my head.

"Maybe it was someone else?" Taehyun asked, obviously trying to make me feel better.

"It was Niki." I muttered to myself.

I needed to get to Hyunjin and find out what was really going on. When I looked at the bright sun gleaming streaks of light through the window blinds, I decided to wait until sundown. After all, Niki couldn't kill anybody during the day without killing himself as well.

Even so, I worried so much. Last time he hunted humans, he killed the boy who saved me. Looking at Taehyun, Soobin and Yeonjun in front of me wasn't enough to reassure me that any more of my loved ones weren't taken by him.

"I- I need a minute." I whispered lowly before storming out of the apartment.

With tears in my eyes, I blindly ran down the stairway, letting the echoing footsteps fill my eardrums. But I saw the sunlight peaking through the small window in the door. It shined on the bottom few steps and I stopped, just an inch away. Catching my breath, I slowly stepped back into the shadows and collapsed on the stair. My sobs then echoed in that dull chamber in harmony with another series of steps.

"Beomgyu," Taehyun's voice sounded from above. He came down and sat next to me. Several moments of silence sat between us, but it was okay, "This kinda of reminds me when we first met. You ran out and I came after you. I didn't know a thing about you, other than that I wanted you to come back."

"You said I was like a lost puppy." I chuckled through tears.

"I didn't know how strong you were back then," He said, catching my full attention, "Y'know, Hyunjin didn't have to turn you to protect you. You've always protected yourself... And Beomgyu?"

He paused, looking into my eyes and searching for the words to translate his heart's desire.

I will always love you. Even if I don't live long enough to show you.

I crashed into his chest and let him hold me. His strong arms cradled me so tenderly. At that moment, I knew what it truly meant to feel the warmth of another human and how I took advantage of it when I was one. I vowed to myself that I'd never take advantage of that again.

I don't know how to say this any other way without making people laugh at me or get upset but the dsmp fandom is a cult. /srs

I was in the dsmp fandom for 1 1/2 years, and it fits most if not all the characteristics I could find of cult communities.

Behavioral Control:

- myself and others were manipulated into watching every piece of content the creators put out. Not because we enjoyed it but because if we didn't we would be shunned by the people who did view the content. This affected sleeping, eating, work and school habits.

- fans were/are exploited financially through merch, donations and subscriptions

- especially during periods of controversy, groups of different fans would shun or even attack fans of other creators (especially if they criticized dsmp creators)

Information control:

- speaking of controversy, the content creators warped their fans perception of themselves and most refuse to fully take accountability when they wrong someone (see the google doc, you know the one)

- spread propaganda via fanart, fanfiction, streams, videos, and trending twitter tags which downplays genuinely important topics going on around the world.

- creators distort the views of their critics, such as the speedrun cheating controversy, or fans dismissing offensive clips as being "taken out of context"

Thought control:

- when a fan misspeaks or says something generally negative, this can result in dog piling, doxxing, death threats, and cyberbullying, which deters fans from speaking their mind in the future

- overuse terms like "accountability" or "cancelling" which leads to misinterpretation of the terms which can turn into buzzwords that blend together (this also applies to AAVE which gets overused incorrectly by both creators and fans)

- creators manipulate fans into making their entire identity about the creators (adopting a creators name, speech patterns and mannerisms, tastes, etc.)

Emotional control:

- fans will send eachother death threats, gore, harrassment and other methods to instill fear in eachother

- creators and fans refuse to take responsibility for harrassment or cruelty, and claim that it's the victims fault for experiencing emotions.

- creators use their platform to act and appear genuine to their audience, creating parasocial relationships to get their viewers to be sympathetic in the event there is controversy

I realize in hindsight that the reason I (and a lot of others) were indoctrinated was because of the covid-19 lockdowns and the nostalgia for 2013 minecraft youtube.

I was genuinely traumatized by my experience being in the fandom, having seen and experienced things that I don't wish apon my worst enemies. It has taken me so long to realize because I have been so afraid to speak out about it. I really hope people will take this post seriously since I genuinely believe this fandom classifies as a cult, and I relate too closely to ex-cult members experiences to sit and be quiet.

If being a streamer was a disease, then Jung Hoseok would be viral—both in the figurative and literal sense. You liked to joke that he had incurable content brain, wherein every action and decision he has ever made stems from the question: How can I turn this into a Youtube video and monetize the hell out of it?

You admired his insanity, in a way. "Being on the grind" was never a lifestyle you would ever find yourself enjoying, but watching the sheer dedication that your best friend had to his craft was both awe-inspiring and tiring at the same time. You always wondered if that boy only dreamt about video algorithms and viewer retention instead of normal things, like bobberts and coochichies.

So when Hoseok barges into your shared kitchen at 7 AM on a Monday with an "epic stream idea," you knew that you were about to hear about his first stupid (and most likely expensive) activity of the week.

“Hobi,” you say, trying to sound as stern as you possibly can. Judging by the way Hoseok immediately smiles wider in response, you have a feeling it’s not working all too well.

“But dudeeeee,” he whines, stretching his words for dramatic effect. He sidles up next to you, rubbing shoulders with you just as you’re about to shove a spoonful of cereal into your mouth. Milk drips onto your shirt, but that’s hardly a concern when Hoseok has apparently made it his mission to side hump your right arm.

“Get the fuck off of me!” you snap, pushing him away. Hoseok laughs in response, ignoring the palpable annoyance pulsing off of you in waves.

“You have to admit though, right? It would be pretty funny to do it,” Hoseok continues as if you hadn’t said anything. He has that special look on his face, where his pupils dilate and his cheeks puff up like a chipmunk—telltale signs pointing to another disastrous visit to the emergency room. 

“Are you seriously asking me if letting your live chat control a muscle stimulator attached to your thighs is a good idea?” 

“Yes!” Hoseok claps his hands gleefully. He runs over to the living room, where his laptop had toppled onto the carpeted floor in his haste to scream his idea at you. He scrolls frantically as he runs back to you, slamming his hip against the kitchen counter in the process. 

“You literally have the pain tolerance of a toddler, and you say you wanna walk on burning coals for entertainment?” You try to speak over the avalanche of expletives rushing out of Hoseok’s mouth, his body hunched over in pain. 

“W-wait...” he moans pathetically, crawling back to you and nudging his laptop onto your lap. “Look...”

Giving him one last disdainful glare, you grab the laptop from him only to find that he’d left it on a website displaying the aforementioned muscle stimulator for sale. The item boasts an impressive 2.5 stars, with reviews ranging from “this son of a bitch numbed my legs and now I can’t walk” to “this little baby is a miracle in the bedroom ❤️” which are two reviews you never want for the same product. 

At your silence, Hoseok looks up at you from the floor with hopeful eyes. “It looks good, right? Plus, it’s on sale for 10% off! This baby is going to get me so many views!”

You stare at him drily. “Hoseok.”

“Okay, I admit that $200 for a weird-looking pain machine is kinda pricey, but since this is going to be a business expense, plus my chat will have to donate a certain amount in order to zap me anyway, so it’ll pay for itself eventually and I can—”

“Hoseok! Are you even fucking hearing yourself?” you spit, swatting him away like a fly. The back of your hand accidentally makes contact with his cheek, and your unintended bitch slap was already enough to make the grown ass man whine in pain. 

“See! You’re going to fucking die on camera and I don’t want to have to deal with it,” you growl, turning back to your sad and soggy bowl of cereal. 

Hoseok props himself on his knees and clasps his hands as if in prayer, except there is no god present in this two bedroom apartment. There is only one other person here, but you might as well be godly with the amount of patience you possess within you.

“Listen, I know it's a bad idea, but I want to do it so much!” Hoseok pleads. He grips your arm, nearly making you knock your entire bowl of cereal off the table. 

“My cereal!” you screech.

“My ad revenue!” Hoseok hollers back, grabbing you by the chin to force your attention on him. “Can you imagine the VOD? It’s for sure getting #1 trending! I can make enough money that I won’t ever have to sellout to weird ballshaving sponsorships ever again!” 

“Hoseok, do you even understand what sort of pain you’ll be in? Some crazy person will donate like $1000 and the thing will permanently damage your nerve endings or some shit. You could seriously hurt yourself!” You huff tiredly, rubbing your temples in a futile to prevent an incoming migraine. 

“A thousand dollars is still a thousand dollars,” Hoseok says, shrugging. “Besides, I’m an entertainer! I was just a step away from selling my body when we were almost homeless, so what’s the difference with selling my body virtually?” He laughs, tilting his head with his familiar

He’s acting like what he said was just another joke, another edgy comment that would have gotten a few laughs from his audience. All it does to you, however, was remember the less than favorable circumstances you both were in a few years ago. You wince—the phantom ache in your spine from sleeping in your car returning with a vengeance.

“Hoseok, the difference is that you don’t have to do it,” you respond plainly. “You’re so talented! You’re funny and entertaining! You make millions of people laugh daily! Isn’t that enough? Do you have to put your body through more pain than is necessary?”

Hoseok laughs awkwardly, threading a hand through his hair. He’s always been bad when it comes to compliments. “Y/N, chill out—”

You sigh tiredly, mustering as much authenticity as you could in your worn eyes. “It’s true though. You could literally do anything and people would still watch you. Hell, I would watch you. I always do, and I love seeing you every day. Isn’t that enough?”

Hoseok sits crosslegged on the floor, twiddling his thumbs. “Uh, well, that was... something,” he squeaks, cheeks blazing. “T..Thank you? I didn’t know you watched me. I thought you would’ve been tired of me since we, well, live together.”

“I just really don’t want anything bad to happen to you,” you confess softly, your words trailing off into silence. You turn to face away from him, unwilling to let him see the flush seeping across your skin. 

There’s a beat of silence, and for a second you think your little outburst might have gotten through his thick skull. When you turn back to look at him, he’s staring at you quizzically as if you’d just grown another head in the past minute. 

“Umm, it wasn’t that serious, Y/N... It probably wouldn’t hurt even that much. The idea isn’t even 100% original... I’ve seen people use it in videos before and I’m sure it won’t be bad. Trust me,” Hoseok finishes with an awkward smile. 

“That’s the thing though... I really don’t trust you,” you sigh, clanking your spoon down into your bowl. Milk splashes on your shirt, but you don’t even care anymore. You scoot your chair back, standing up and walking around Hoseok to head to your bedroom.

Just as you’re about to close the door, Hoseok calls out from the kitchen. “So you’ll let me do it, right?”

Without missing a beat, you yell back, “Not if you still want me to care about you tomorrow!” before slamming the door.
