We Live in Cairo- June 22, 2019
We Live in Cairo is a musical that just made its world premiere at A.R.T. The show follows six college students who joined the 2011 revolution in Cairo, Egypt where they overthrew their president who was in power for thirty years. Through music, photography, and art, the students are able to express their opinions and give insight into the revolution. Here is the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5yt0rF_Pn8&list=LLZ_RMSOry8Qo78TfC71-Nng&index=5
Amir and Hany are brothers who compose and perform songs about the revolution. Layla is a photographer and photographs the protests in Tahrir Square and is Amir’s girlfriend. Karim and Hassan are street artists. Fadwa runs all social media accounts and posts pictures and information on the revolution.
The score written by brothers Daniel and Patrick Lazour is mesmerizing, beautiful, yet intense and unforgettable with lyrics that really demonstrate the ambitions and hopes of the students. The song, Movement sung by Amir and Layla discusses the desire to move away from Cairo and start a life together, yet the love for one’s country intervenes as a love between a Christian man (Amir) and a Muslim woman (Layla) becomes complicated and unacceptable in Cairo. The scene is intimate as Amir and Layla sit on the edge of the stage and pull the audiences’ attention directly into their connection. Here is the song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQSgowAgWto&list=LLZ_RMSOry8Qo78TfC71-Nng&index=26&t=0s
The song Tahrir is Now is powerful and provides a triumphant and powerful act one finale. One of my favorite lyrics of the show: “we have cracked the wall of fear and we’ll see it crumble.”
The song Dreaming Words is perhaps the most emotional one of the show since SPOILER ALERT: Amir dies while singing at a protest and Hany returns from law school in New York. Amir reappears as a spirit and sings with Hany about all the accomplishments them and their friends have made, although it’s only dreaming words. :( Their own accomplishment? They released a debut album. Here is a snippet of it:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pf17XSSKvlg&list=LLZ_RMSOry8Qo78TfC71-Nng&index=7
The show is intimate and makes you feel a part of it as projections of the revolution comes out across the ceiling of the theater. The story is powerful and questions what happens after you fight so hard in a revolution to just receive a new person in power who you also disagree with. How far does one go for the love of their country?
The acting was also phenomenal and the cast was amazing.
I really enjoyed this show and loved how each character had an artistic outlet to express themselves. This is a show that deserves more life and exposure so I hope it will continue elsewhere.

my thoughts on hadestown national theatre cast (4 jan. 2019)
hermes (andrè de shields): he acts as the omniscient storyteller who sometimes interacts with the other characters, which is certainly no bad thing. but it does seem somewhat weird—at least to me, maybe because i’m more familiar with the myths—that hermes was chosen to be storyteller over the obvious choice (i.e. the fates). overall andrè was amazing, and his character does more in act two than in the “original” version (i mean the nytw version), which is honestly refreshing.
orpheus (reeve carney): ah, the bright-eyes idealist. in some ways i can understand why reeve is anaïs mitchell’s first choice for orpheus, but i have to admit that some songs just don’t suit him. of course i’m prejudiced because i love damon with all my heart and he’s the first person i heard as orpheus, but still. reeve’s voice is gravelly and a bit rock-ish, which works if that’s what you’re looking for. that’s just not what i see in orpheus, the supposed best lyricist and singer in all greek mythology. reeve and eva certainly have great chemistry, and reeve is an amazing actor, but he just doesn’t shine in some songs (like if it’s true or any of the epics) the way damon does.
eurydice (eva noblezada): she’s the woman who orpheus would go to hell for. this may partly be because i saw eva for the first time on stage and developed a massive crush, but i think she’s a great eurydice. she’s got great range and, like i said above, reeve and eva have great chemistry that makes their world-bending love believable on stage. i will admit that i think eva totally outshines reeve, but to each their own. and i must say that i wish she had more solos.
hades (patrick page) & persephone (amber gray): i came into this knowing i would love patrick and amber, but i never realized just how much i would adore them. they’ve been playing these roles for three different productions now, and they’re perfect for it. i say close to the stage, and you can just see the raw emotions of their characters in their eyes. patrick’s voice suits hades so well, and amber is utterly astonishing as persephone. how long becomes so memorable with these two. i could gush forever about how perfect these two are for my favorite greek gods, but we all know how amazing they are.
the fates (carly mercedes dyer, rosie fletcher, gloria onitiri): when i say the fates shine, they shine. i love the fates so so much—not just the characters, but the three amazing women playing them. their harmonies were beautiful almost to the point of heartbreak. nothing changes is where they truly shine, but to be honest they’re wonderful in every song they’re in. the matching costumes? iconic. their stage presence? indescribable.
the workers/chorus (sharif afifi, beth hinton-lever, seyi omooba, aiesha pease, joseph prouse, jordan shaw, shaq taylor): absolutely amazing. the WORKERS!!! boy oh boy do they help hold this show together. the choreography that they have to learn is amazing. their harmonies were amazing as well.
all in all, an amazing show and i’m so glad i’m also going to see it tomorrow.
