Years ago back when ebooks were a new thing I collected a bunch of ebooks that were being given away for free and then backed up my Kindle purchases. (Sci Fi fans should check out the Baen free Sci Fi library if you haven’t already.) While cleaning out my hard drive I came across those books so I pulled them all into Calibre to organize them. A neatly organized library of my digital books is a beautiful thing.

Once I finished I decided to download all of the books I’ve purchased from Amazon - something I last did a decade ago. And I was shocked to realize they’ve fucked with the DRM so badly that I can no longer get into my books in any way but through the Kindle app. As a person who’s been using computers for decades that sets off alllllll my red flags. File formats change, businesses come and go, and converting files from format to format is not a foolproof process. Sometimes they get corrupted. Sometimes they get deleted.

So now I’m left with about a hundred books that I paid good hard cash for and the only way I’m going to be able to meaningfully own them is to… pirate digital copies of the books I already paid for? So anyway if anyone knows good places to pirate books from HMU because I have a pile of books I need to find in a more accessible format.
