NON-SPOILER REVIEW
Overall: This was so much fun! I thoroughly enjoyed it! It reminded me a lot of Tenimyu where everything but the main topic (e.g. tennis, or in this case.... going to the west? Becoming gods? Becoming priests?) happens. There's so many ridiculous and funny moments in this hat's just so unrelated to the main plot. It was very funny, there were quite a bit of adlib or higawari (daily changes) as far as I could tell and it was a hella lot of fun! It really made me want to pick up the manga once I finished watching this!
Rating: 8/10
*
SPOILER REVIEW
For once I just enjoyed the play rather than making lots of mental and critical notes through out it, so my review may be shorter than normal.
PLOT
We follow Ukoku and Koumyou as they reminisce about their training days, they also somehow manage to go back into the past and be part of it so sometimes they have to run away and hide from their younger selves. Also, I'm not a Saiyuuki fan so I could be fuzzy here, the main plot between the two of them is that Koumyou is attempting to kill Ukoku so he can get the ultimate blessing or something (y'know that mark on Ukoku's head).
This is the summary of the story for the Wikia:
At a training temple buried deep in the snowy mountains, eleven apprentice monks battle each other in order to become the next highest ranking monk, a Sanzo Priest. ---Among them, there was one genius.
THE STAGE
There was so much charm in this stage! So many parts of this was just so charming and so much fun!
☆ The opening scene is really good because it's where Ukoku and Koumyou are talking seriously with Jikaku about their mission and what must be done, but Jikaku is just ripping into Koumyou like there's no tomorrow. He was very funny!! There was one point where Jikaku asks 'and how old are you?' and Koumyou replies 'I'm 16/18' and the entire audience died in laughter. It continued for a good enough time. Then Jikaku kept getting Koumyou's name wrong too.
☆ Then there's the opening song where they wear cat masks and I really enjoyed that visual of them! I really should read the manga so I can understand what it all means.
☆ And so we follow them through the training and they have two trainings; the first one which is the day before their final test or at least one of their big training tests.
☆ We’re introduced to young boys who are in the middle of training and they have to fight while staying out of the water, or else you’ll be out. I really liked the projection mapping when they 'fell' to the lower part of the stage and the mapping showed the water splashes on the wall behind them. It was neat!
So the night before their big test, they get into a crap ton of ridiculous stuff. So let's break that down!
☆ First we have bath time! And the public bath owner won't let Houmei, Genkai and Toudai take a bath because Jyuuan is in there and he's clearly more important than them three xD When Jyuuan comes out, he has a slow dance and song about his bath time and how gorgeous his hair is but obviously Houmei just doesn't care and sneaks into the bath while Jyuuan is prancing about xD Then Jyuuan realises there's a knot in his hair and he has a hissy fit and runs off trying to fix it xD
☆ Also during the shower scene, I remember someone (I want to say Jyuuan but I don't think it was) falling on top of Houmei and it was the very comedic moment of a split second of silence before he gave the biggest high-pitched screen ever; it was absolutely hilarious.
☆ The next ridiculous thing to happen is about Shou-un; he acts all tough and like he hates everyone but then Ryuuzen comes on stage with a mic and is like 'he acts all tought but in fact......... he's really a nice person!' and then there's a song of how cute and nice Shou-un really is and this makes Shou-un really angry and embarrassed and he's like 'I'm not nice!! I'm a tough guy! I'm mean!!!' and then mid-way through the song, three of the cast come down (one of them being Gichou who's pretending to be a marathon runner, and the other two being supporters) from the back of the theatre room and down the stairs, pretending they're in a marathon and Gichou collapses in the mid-section of the audience seating area and he's like 'I can't go on anymore' but the audience start clapping and cheering for him to continue you, Ryuuzen is like an MC /Commentator at this point for the song and audience and this ridiculous skit. So Gichou finds the strength to get back up and makes his way to the main stage where he collapses again and the commentator is like 'can you continue on? For you family?! Your wife?! Your daughter?!' but he's down on the floor. So here, Shou-un breaks and gets down on the floor next to Gichou and starts supporting him and telling him to go on and Ryuuzen is like 'see he's nice!' and so Gichou finishes his marathon and the song about Shou-un being nice continues and finishes. I was dying of laughter this entire time. The ending of this scene was the best because Ryuuzen is like 'god guys, why you so loud! Some of us are trying to sleep!' and storms off and Houmei, Genkai and Toudai are just stood there in shock like '...but you were the one making all the noise!' xD it was very perfect timing and very funny and I enjoyed this so much!
☆ Then we had Ukoku and Koumyou randomly cross-dressing and working at a hostess club -- the audience went absolutely mental when they saw Koumyou/Mikami Shun in his dress becuase he damn he looks so gorgeous and so beautiful in it! And everyone died of laughter when Ukoku/Karahashi Mitsuru came out because he still had his stumble and he was bow-legged and he kept his deep voice and instead of tending to the customers, he was busy pouring him and drinking his own drinks xD And then it got even more hilarious by the amount of times he said 'omoshiroi na / isn't this interesting (in a very masculine way)' and the customers were so baffled by him but Koumyou was trying really hard to keep their cover safe while Ukoku just didn't give a shit xD and then it got even more ridiculous when Ukoku lifted his dress all the way up so we could see his skinny, hair legs and his black boxers -- and he did it twice and we were just dying of laughter and poor Koumyou was like 'get out! let's get out now!' xD what the point was of this scene, I have no fucking idea xD I think it was just the boys imagining what it's like in a hostess club? But I swear to god that one of the 'girls' was YuuKun.... but if it's not, I need to find out who the fuck it was because DAMN they were damn pretty and had the nicest legs and arms!!
☆ And then we get to the boys' sleeping quarters where they're all clearly wide awake and none of them can or want to sleep so they start doing stupid things like throwing pillows at each other; especially between Shou-un and Jyuuan xD they also ended up singing, obviously.
☆ We get some slower moments around this point; we get a partially solo song from Genkai because he has special powers which allow him to see the future and he remembers how his parents died (they were slaughtered and killed which is sad) and then during this song we also have some of the other boys like Jyuuan singing the troubles they've been through. Also Genkai is bullied somewhat during his training his because he's not human like the rest of them.
So finally we get to the day of the test:
☆ Which started off very nicely because all the boys stripped off the top half of their costumes so we could see ALL their torso and arm muscles and of course they all looked great! But of course I was gooooooogly too much at YuuKun - in fact I didn't really watch anyone else when he was on stage because I AM BIAS!
☆ I really liked how in the fight scene, they soon learnt that fighting together makes them stronger and it was great seeing them go off into pairs.
☆ During this test scene, we cut back to Ukoku and Koumyou, and Ukoku finally tries and attempts to attack Koumyou and it was very beautifully done but of course Ukoku admits that's it's impossible because of how strong and talented Koumyou is in comparison.
☆ We get to the climax of the stage which is a GIANT SNOWMAN! Their final enemy! And Houmei quickly realises that they should ALL join together in order to defeat it, so they all join hands and combine their power to defeat it! I really loved this scene because many parts of the stage at this point 'collapsed' and 'fell down' so everything looked very messes and it fitted the whole 'there's avalanches everywhere because the snowman is raging and breaking everything'.
☆ BUT one thing in this scene confused me, probably just because I haven't read the manga but; when they joined forces, Genkai didn't join in. In fact, he just hopped onto Toudai's back and Toudai carried him for the entirety of that final battle scene; so is it that he doesn't have any powers similar to them and that's why he couldn't join in, but he's obviously an important nakama (comrade xD) so they wanted to protect him.
☆ I like how for their final attack, they are at the top most set of the stage. way way at the back and behind a railing, and they're all in a line and it was a great way to finish it. But the boys had such a short time to get from the bottom stage, up to the top stage so you could tell they're ran up and some of them were hard breathing -- most likely partially acting but I bet some of it was true haha
*
I did have one slightly negative thing to say but it doesn't seem that worthwhile to say.... but in case you wanted to know; I was a tad underwhelmed by Taiga in this. I don't think he was all that able to show off much n this one but that could just be his character? Because he’s great in EnStage, he’s great in YowaMushi, I’ve heard he’s great in Daiya no A, he was great in Danshi ha Tsurakunai yo? so maybe it was just this one. I think his character just wasn’t developed enough for this stage. I wanted to know more - about all of them actually.
