Not that i dont think dean is bi but when non w* people use dean's male siren as evidence of him being bi I just wonder if they forget who the siren was meant to be a stand in for

Since I just rewatched 4x14 "Sex and Violence" let me revisit a few things. I really really like this ep, it's darkly psychological and it's a great ep on Sam and Dean's relationship, as well as having bi Dean subtext.
The first victim murders his wife
The second victim murders his mother
The third victim, Dean, the siren tries to goad into killing his brother
So the siren manipulates some people into harming a romantic partner, or manipulates them into harming a family member, a platonic bond. The siren gets off on the violence, the power, of driving someone to that extreme.
Sam and Dean are on different paths this season. Dean misses his brother and he's lonely. They're drifting apart, mistrust is growing between the brothers. The siren takes a male form, FBI agent Nick, to entice Dean. To give him someone who is like-a-brother. But Nick isn't like Sam. Nick is a lot like Dean. He's excited about the Impala, he's knowledgeable on classic rock, he laughs at Dean's jokes. Nick is the siren purposefully honing in on the loneliness in Dean, but in so doing, creates someone who is sort of like a brother but isn't Dean's brother. They aren't brothers. What the siren is playing upon is Dean's wish for a companion who understands him, who he can connect with, and it doesn't have to be his brother.
"I gave him what he wanted and it wasn't some b*tch in a g-string, it was you" is the text. Textually, Nick is using Dean's loneliness due to his slowly growing estrangement from Sam, and giving him a substitute for that.
Nick, along with being a companion, is a potential romantic and sexual partner, which a brother wouldn't be. Those scenes with Nick and Dean in the car...for one thing the siren innately operates in a seductive way and that actor really seems to be leaning into that, and Dean is...Deaning the way he sometimes does with men he's not related to. The way they're looking at each other in the car scene. This is the subtext.
And it's so weird to me that people get attacked or mocked or have had hate threads made about them on twitter dot com just for analyzing all this (I've been trolled for it, other bi Dean fans could probably tell similar horror stories). Even recently, I know it's still been going on -- a few weeks back, some bitter Sam stan tried to claim that if you let in the subtext on bi Dean, that must mean that you are validating w*ncest and that's just not how this works.
In fact it can be both about the platonic sibling bond, and bi Dean subtext (with Dean/Nick as the unspoken potential). The episode is mainly, and most overtly, about the brothers and their strained bond and how the siren preys on that. And I have a lot of feelings about Sam and Dean in this episode. It hurts. It's poignant. That is a platonic bond on the series and one that I really love. At the same time, the bi Dean subtext, the dynamic he has with Nick, the actual seduction siren Nick is playing on Dean, can co-exist with the brothers and their sibling bond troubles. Sam is not a potential romantic or sexual partner for Dean. Nick is. And yes that can be a layer, it's called subtext, while it is ostensibly about Nick filling that loneliness in Dean because Sam and Dean are drifting apart.
We also need to put this in context of the season. This ep isn't about Dean and Cas, but it is in S4 and falls at a time when Dean is drawn to a male companion--an angel, who is not related to him. Who gets him in ways nobody else Dean knows does. An unexpected kindred spirit where Dean never expected to find that. Cas isn't like Nick, Cas is weird, and he doesn't know pop culture and he doesn't know music and he doesn't care about classic cars like Nick does. Nick is an illusion, a seduction, the siren creates The Perfect Person for Dean to get close to. Cas, otoh, is the real deal. He's authentic. The connection between them isn't a seduction, it's Cas being Cas, Dean being Dean, and Cas goes against his orders from Heaven due to his growing attachment to Dean. Cas is making Dean feel a whole lot less lonely in S4 where Dean and Sam are drifting apart and Sam is wading into dangerous waters and isn't listening to Dean. So Sex and Violence isn't about Destiel, but Sex and Violence, Dean and Nick, exist not only in the context of Sam and Dean's relationship, but what's forming between Dean and Cas as well (even if Sam and Dean are obviously most directly relevant as the context).
Scrubbing all that out, and trolling and mocking anyone for unpacking it and making their case for the bi Dean subtext is really weird and it's anti-art and it's anti-interpretation. There's nothing wrong with saying "huh, that's an interesting take, hadn't thought of that. Not sure I see it, but carry on *shrug*" and move on.
Instead, for years, there are stans who attacked subtext and attack analysis of subtext, who laugh at it and call people insane, and are still doing it recently.
This analysis of Sex and Violence is old news, but I hope my revisiting maybe adds something to the discussion of this ep. bi Dean discussion is still going on to this day about it and so is the trolling, and I refuse to be silenced on perfectly reasonable subtextual analysis because some people feel a need to throw immature tantrums. It's utterly unhinged, in a bad way, that some people have been so aggressive about actively trying to silence discussion of bi Dean in Sex and Violence.

My Commentary on Rob and Rich Reviewing (4x14) Sex and Violence
I was listening to the latest Supernatural Then and Now Podcast (The Siren Episode) and I had to stop it after the Rob and Rich review to write down my thoughts because it annoyed me so much.
The guys both thought the episode was okay, but a bunch of things “bumped” for them. This is fine, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion about an episode, but some of the things that “bumped” for them “bump” for me.
Tumblr media
My thoughts under the cut …
Bump # 1 - The Siren turning out to be a man
So, both Rs had an issue with the siren being a man since the lore showed them as women, and I think, because in real mythology they are women. Though they conceded that the a male siren could be a thing too, it seemed to really bother them that the siren ended up not being about a sexual connection with the brothers (though Rich saw the flask sharing scene as flirtatious … because no guys have ever shared a flask, including, Dean and Bobby).
I’m sorry, but the siren targeting the brothers, and using a version of an ideal brother to get to Dean isn’t a plot hole or a “stretch” or something, it’s an interesting choice and it’s exactly the point of the episode. While many men are vulnerable to a pretty woman who is into them, Dean just wants Sam. He wants his relationship with Sam to be better. In particular, he’s so worried about Sam and insecure in their bond that he wants a Sam who likes what he likes but, more importantly, one who listens to him and doesn’t hide things from him. And I know I’ve written about this before on a previous post, but Dean doesn’t NEED the siren to be a hot girl; he can find one of those easily. He needs a Sam he can trust. That’s the whole point. The show is drawing the comparison between sexual intimacy/romantic companionship (usually one of the most desired things in literature/media) to the brothers relationship to show how much brotherhood matters to Dean in particular (in this case).
The way the male siren actor portrays its interest in the brothers, to me, is very much like it’s intrigued and excited that it found a high even better than the sexual desire that it usually feeds off of. When the siren feels how desperate Dean is for the bond with Sam to be fixed, it finds him more interesting than it’s usual target. Dean’s longing for Sam (not sexual) is even stronger than the sexual desire or romantic companionship that the siren usually feeds off of, so much so that the siren changes its entire MO to go after the brothers.
Bump # 2 - The Doctor sleeping with Sam (when she isn’t the siren) is weird
So, the Rs disagreed on the “bumpiness” of this one. Rob thought it was weird that the doctor would just decide to sleep with Sam (at work), while it didn’t bother Rich because … Jared Padalecki. Sound argument (in this case), Rich.
Still, the doctor is a little unusual, and her behaviour is clearly intended to be a misdirect, but the show does a good enough job of suggesting she had a bad breakup (or worse) and is now just sort of living in the moment, so her behaviour doesn’t bother me. Also, Sam is hot.
What is stranger than the doctor’s behaviour, for the audience who knows him, is Sam having sex with her I that moment. Not only that, but Sam is very chill when she’s hitting on him, where in the past, Sam has often been a little shy or awkward with women that he’s been attracted to or interested in. So no, this is not Sam’s usual MO to sleep with the doctor, especially when we know he and Ruby are or were also sleeping together. Sam is not acting entirely like his usual self. And he hasn’t been acting entirely like himself for a while now.
Bump # 3 - The Siren telling the boys to fight each other and saying the winner can “be with” him
I don’t know why they had an issue with this. The siren literally explains that it loves the rush of having people willing to do anything for it, even kill people they love. What the siren tells the brothers doesn’t matter because it’s not like it’s really planning to have a relationship with the brother who wins the fight. And the boys are already infected at this point, so it’s just giving them incentive to fight. It’s not sticky about the sexual-ness of people’s need for the siren, it’s about the desperation they have to be with it (in whatever way).
Bump #4 - Sam dismissing the Doctor after sleeping with her.
The guys were both bothered by Sam not bothering to say goodbye to the doctor, and they mentioned that it seemed sort of old-school (womanizing?). Rob said that Sam dismissing her was more like something Dean would do than Sam. I know that I already said this, but this is the whole point. Sam hasn’t been acting like his old self. This isn’t an accidental writing mistake, where the writer accidentally wrote Sam more like Dean. Sam is different now.
It also isn’t like Sam to call Dean weak, or ridicule him for being messed up from his experience in hell. Season 2 Sam would never, and Season 3 Sam wouldn’t either. Season 4 Sam has changed from the trauma of losing Dean, drinking demon blood, and having Ruby in his ear.
Also, to play devils advocate on myself, Sam has actually left towns before without saying goodbye to the girl he had a connection with, maybe not after sleeping with her, but it’s not wholly out of character for him to leave without saying goodbye (I’m not criticizing him for this). Also, I really don’t think that doctor was looking for anything more from Sam beyond hooking up in her office, so this doesn’t bother me much.
Final thoughts
Anyway, I’m not arguing that everyone has to love every episode, or even like all the ones that I do. I’m not even arguing that people need to like Sex and Violence because it really can be a little uncomfortable, and there is a bit of a sexual undercurrent to it all, even though that’s not the sirens intention with the brother. That’s also not exactly new on Supernatural. However, it’s weird to me that so many of the things that “bumped” for Rob and Rich seem to me like very deliberate choices by the writers, not careless mistakes or pointlessly out of character. This episode reveals a lot about where Sam and Dean are at this point in the season, both individually and in their relationship.
Granted, I have the benefit of watching the episode and knowing where it’s all leading, but this is what sort of bothers me about hearing people discuss the show who are doing it for a purpose and are probably only half-invested in the story. They miss things that seem like they should be really clear. Also, it’s funny when they find things uncomfortably sexual in relation to Sam and Dean (they didn’t outright say that, but I think it was implied in what they said) and act like it’s a surprise or out of place. Again, this isn’t new. They obviously listened to too many hellers if they didn’t realize that Sam and Dean are weirdly close at times or that the show makes some pretty blatant parallels between them and couples or makes quasi-incestuous connections between Sam and Dean.
I have nothing else to add here. This was mostly just a rant, but feel free to add your two cents if you made it this far.

Every time I watch 4x14 "Sex & Violence", I'm struck that the boys never put together that the siren's names are all Disney princess names (Jasmine, Aurora, Ariel, Belle).
First, even if it's not something they watched, they know plenty of pop culture, and three of those princesses were from popular Disney movies while they were growing up.
And second, because if they did catch it, they'd notice that Nick Munroe doesn't fit the pattern. A fact I google every time, forgetting it's not the name of any Disney character or actor. It's something that might be an inconsistency or an attempt to hide the twist. But I prefer to think that the siren wasn't sure what they figured out before he met up with them at the hospital and they didn't want to be too obviously the siren being "Agent Eric Prince" or something.

STACY Ew, I can taste her mom lipstick…you’re telling her tonight, right?
rude, stacy :P
SAM Is that a hickey? DEAN And? It was Valentine’s Day. I can’t help it if I’m a hopeless romantic. SAM You got half of that right. DEAN Just doing my civic duty. Helping all the single ladies. You know the best thing about February 14th. You don’t have to be Mr. Right, just Mr. Right Now. SAM That’s classy. DEAN Yeah and what’d you do, judgy? Curl up in your Snuggie, watch '50 Shades' on cable?
Tumblr media
cuz every girl crazy bout sharp dressed man men
Tumblr media Tumblr media
*squints* what is that fake domain, danharper.search for the knockoff facebook page. and we got an untitled folder, not quite untitled 1 and 2 but i'll take it :p
Tumblr media Tumblr media
always with the full kitchenette and vintage appliances. and bringing back the ridiculous little separators. tires!
DEAN I need a beer, regroup, maybe get lucky. SAM Didn’t you just get lucky? DEAN That was in Kansas. What do you say? You with me? Ready to go scrape a few hearts off the bar room floor? SAM I think I’ll pass. I’m gonna go hit the lore, but you go be you. DEAN Suit yourself.
dean's feelin his oats again apparently! feels like he had some seasons there where far as we knew he wasn't ever getting laid
laughing at the wife shoving these witchy items down the garbage disposal. one way to get rid of things i guess? not so good for the plumbing though
Tumblr media
hey they named a motel after me personally
DEAN Hey. Any luck? SAM No. You? DEAN Nah. Hey what’s a…uh…dad bod?
please. (reminder that all bodies are good bodies)
MELISSA All I had to do was chant it and seal it with a kiss.
oh i see. it was plot-relevant mom lipstick.
SAM So the curse is transmittable? DEAN Like a magic STD. Okay that works. Kinda makes you nostalgic for good old fashioned herpes.
this is very fic-ish. LOL and of course dean kisses the lady to take the curse on. clearly he should hot potato it over to sam at some point but we know that's not gonna happen :p
Tumblr media
baby lookin pretty in all those pink highlights
DEAN I’d say that went pretty well. What do you think? SAM Wait. Are you serious? You think it’s a great idea to give yourself a fatal curse? DEAN Well, target's off her back ain’t it? SAM I’m just saying. You don’t have to do this. Be the guinea pig. DEAN What? SAM Be the martyr. Try to carry the weight by yourself. Do this. DEAN I’m gonna be fine, okay? And as long as I’m good, she’s good and that’s the important thing. Besides. It proved our theory didn’t it? That this whole kiss of death thing is transmittable. I mean, I’m not asking for the Nobel here, but thank you.
both reasonable to do and also his martyr tendencies are well documented :p but even if he died, wouldn't it just go back to her? moo point, as they say?
SAM I guess. Here we go. Someone chants a curse, lays a wet one on you, then the victim is seduced and killed by the Qareen, but instead of taking the form of Barbara Eden, the present themselves as your deepest, darkest desire.
oh great. so we're gonna see amara then. very convenient of this witch to leave post-it notes with all the details on their monster including how to kill it
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
okay, that was adorable. so happy to win for once, didn't even care to claim the prize
AMARA You’re a mystery. I can see inside your heart. Feel the love you feel. Except it’s cloaked in shame. When it comes to this, you can’t help yourself, so why fight it. Just give in.
i mean it's just funny because we did kind of do this already in 4x14 sex and violence with the siren.
from s4e14 SAM Yeah. You see, sirens can read minds. They see what you want most and then they can kinda, like, cloak themselves. You know, like an illusion. -- MUNROE Dean's all mine. SAM You poisoned him. MUNROE No. I gave him what he needed. And it wasn't some bitch in a G-string. It was you. A little brother that looked up to him, that he could trust. And now he loves me. He'd do anything for me. And I gotta tell you, Sam, that kind of devotion? I mean, watching someone kill for you? It's the best feeling in the world. SAM Is that why you're slutting all over town? MUNROE Ahh. I get bored, like we all do. And I wanna fall in love again. And again...and again.
have to do some mental gymnastics to not understand that as wincest, i think. still hard to wrap my head around that making it to the screen. anyway. dean wants to bang amara, let's get to it
DEAN It was Amara. SAM That surprise you? DEAN That doesn’t surprise you? SAM Honestly? DEAN Honestly? You seriously think the sister of God is my deepest darkest desire? SAM She isn’t? DEAN No! She can’t be! SAM Why not? DEAN Why? Because if she is that means that I’m… SAM Means you’re what? Complicit? Weak? Evil? DEAN For starters, yeah.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SAM Dean. Do you honestly think you ever had a choice in the matter? She’s the sister of God, and for some reason she picked you and that sucks, but if you think I’m gonna blame you or judge you…I’m not. DEAN You know that I want her ass dead. SAM Yes. Of course. And I know you’ve also probably beaten yourself up a hundred times over it, but where has that gotten us? Just how bad is it? DEAN Standing here right now, every bone in my body wants to run her through. Send her back to that hole she crawled out of. But when I’m near her, I don’t know. Something happens and I can’t explain it, but to call it desire or love…it’s not that. I’m screwed man. We wanna kill the darkness. We need to kill the darkness. And I don’t think I can. I’m sorry to do that to you, ya know, but when it comes right down to it… SAM I got it Dean.
i honestly can't remember the last time they had that open of a conversation. dare i say, that's practically out of character understanding from sam, when it comes to dean hiding something important like that. i fully expected the show to have him flip his lid over dean not telling him something relevant to their big monster hunt, not trusting him with being able to handle the truth. maybe i'm just jaded by how they've done overblown brother conflict for so many seasons. but anyway, i'm thankful for sam being so reasonable and understanding. i'm thankful for dean just telling him straight up what's going on and that he can recognize he can't just power through this problem. usually they only talk this way with other people, it's nice to have it directed at each other for once. still a little bit in shock, honestly.
Tumblr media
i like how they focused on the money he left to cover the damages again after showing him slip it under initially. like hello fans yes they do try to cover the fact that they're constantly wrecking motel rooms. feel like these later seasons have a lot of little nods like that (like say, the rock paper scissors, a bitch/jerk moment in 11x04, etc)

I feel like Dean has tried to kill sam quite a bit throughout the 15 seasons of supernatural
Like I know they've both tried to kill each other because of various supernatural beings cursing or possessing them, but it kind of feels like dean holds it against sam more than sam holds it against dean. Sam almost always immediately offers forgiveness and says he knows it wasn't dean, but dean doesn't really say the same in return. It's like he holds on to so much against sam and he can never let it go, not the same way he can for literally anybody else. But it's just wild to me that with all that he holds against sam, sam never does the same back, he doesnt bring up all the times dean has harmed/tried to kill him (or if he does I just haven't made it to that episode yet)
Anyway there's no real question here I just kind of wanted to rant about sam
Funny you should bring that up, I have a fic for that:
Your feelings about Dean holding things against Sam are absolutely valid and fully supported by canon, and I've got concrete examples below. Warning, there are spoilers through s10 if you haven't gotten that far.
1x10 Asylum
While under the influence of Ellicott, Sam tries to shoot Dean. Afterwards, Sam apologizes, but Dean doesn’t accept it. Dean relents only after Sam asks if they need to talk about it.
2x14 Born Under a Bad Sign
Meg shoots Dean while possessing Sam. After Meg is exorcised, while Sam is in pain from a severe burn with a hot poker, Dean punches him.
4x14 Sex and Violence
Dean tries to kill Sam with an axe and is stopped at the last second by Bobby. The next day (4x15), after Sam has already apologized multiple times for what was said under the siren’s influence, we get Dean’s passive-aggressive, downright whiney “I don't want to be holding you back or nothin’.” There is no apology from Dean for the things he said or, more importantly, for trying to kill Sam.
8x06 Southern Comfort
Dean tries to shoot Sam while under the influence of the Confederate soldier’s ghost. Afterwards, Sam is justifiably angry about the things Dean said, but the very next episode, it’s like nothing ever happened and the first thing Sam does is try to ease Dean’s guilt about leaving Cas in Purgatory.
Now here’s the kicker: the things that Dean said while possessed were things that he never stopped holding against Sam even after Sam spent 180 years being tortured in the cage. Some of which Dean even admitted weren’t Sam’s fault back in 5x05. But wait, there’s more: he also held Sam coming back without a soul against him, something that was obviously out of his control. “But,” you may say, “he just said those things because he was possessed.” To which I respond by pointing out that the laundry list of Sam’s failures that Dean called out in 10x23 were the same things he called Sam out for while possessed: "All right. Well, I'm just spit-balling here, but if I were you, uh… Ruby, killing Lilith, letting Lucifer out, losing your soul, not looking for me when I went to Purgatory"
(And BTW, I have a fic for that too. A few, actually.)
10x03 Soul Survivor
Dean psychologically assaults Sam with the most emotionally damaging things he can think of to say, then hunts him down and tries to brain him with a hammer. Sam responds by running out to “pick him up a big ol’ bag of crap food and stuff it in his face” himself.
10x23 Brother’s Keeper
Dean lures Sam to the restaurant to kill him, calls him evil, tells him he deserves to die, tells him it was a mistake to stop Sam from sacrificing himself in 8x23. Sam responds by telling him, “You will never, ever hear me say that you -- the real you -- is anything but good.”

Supernatural, Ep. 4x14
Sex and Violence
there is so much to talk about in this episode! i don't know if it was a good episode or not, i don't know if i liked it or not, but i know there is a lot to say!!!
firstly, i simply cannot ignore the queer subtext. they have done everything they could to make me ignore it, but it doesn't work. i don't buy that dean wants a perfect brother enough to see the siren as a guy. i do buy that dean is bi and repressing it. i do buy that dean is bi and the siren is not bringing it up clearly to avoid chasing him away. i do buy that dean is bi and everyone is just missing it. like, this is clearly a queer story to me. and i think i have a lot of support in the community for that.
the final scene was full of sorrow, full of phenomenal character work! bobby doesn't know what the brothers said to each other, so he tells them not to feel bad for getting got. it doesn't even occur to him that there are emotional things going on because of the years of emotional repression in all three of them. and, to many, the brothers seem to have a bond too strong to break. but, nothing is too big to fail.
meanwhile, sam and dean both agree that they know the other didn't mean the things they said. but, that doesn't make them less true. they may not have meant them, they certainly didn't mean to say them. but there is a ring of truth in every accusation. sam doesn't consciously believe that sam is holding him back, but unconsciously... and dean definitely believes that his brother is not the same as he was. there are lifetimes of resentment and anger behind the siren-induced words. their anger didn't come from nothing, and both brothers know that.
this episode is really giving buffy 4x20 the yoko factor. we have got to break up the team. they have to be vulnerable to the different sides, open and raw. the winchesters need their flanks exposed, and the only way to accomplish that is to break them apart. they will protect the other's weak points unless you prevent that. divide and conquer, the writers know. and so they sow the seeds of division. i cannot wait for them to be ripe. (because i think it will be a good story, not because i want the brothers to suffer.)

ok listen last ask for the day. in 4x14 (sex & violence) they really said oh sirens take on the form of a man's perfect woman and then had the siren appear as a man for dean. like. a dude who liked the music dean likes and the car dean drives. just. a guy dean thinks is cool is the perfect woman for him? and then they're like well the siren isn't trying to convince him that he'll love him forever romantically he's trying to be his perfect little brother. which of course is a thing dean craves very very much, to be loved forever by a brother, but still. Still. i think it's a fun idea that the siren was like oh he wants somebody he thinks is cool and then at the last second would be like oh wait he has too much repression + internalised homophobia gotta change gears
that episode is so insane... the siren is like you wanted a little brother, someone who looks up to you but that’s not at all what happens when they’re together?? they just straight up go on a date? (not even mentioning the insane hays code of them sitting in the car and drinking from the same flask)
the best thing however is that bobby never heard the “you wanted a little brother” speech so he just sees that dean’s siren is a dude and goes “oh so he’s gay. word.” once again give it up for my favourite screencaps from this show (6x01):

i think we should move our conversation on 4x14 sex & violence towards questioning jackles’s Choices there. like he WAS acting dean attracted to the siren guy. like at least subconsciously he understood that he should play into being Affected by the man, and there’s just no way to misinterpret how he interpreted the direction. and that’s not helped by the fact that if they wanted to lean into the conflict between the brothers throughout the ep, the other guy would have been more like a brother - a little annoying, needing guidance, seeking approval. instead, the interactions between dean and the siren were very much like two guys trying to figure out if the other one is into guys. you can directly parallel those scenes to dean reacting to aaron when they first meet, except aaron came on too strong and from a different angle. if they had made aaron pretend he’s an fbi agent and try to outmasc dean instead, it would have been a totally different story.

Background: Based on the synopsis and set images as well as my own delusional Buddie brain, here is my theory of Episode 4x14.
Episode 4x13 will end with a firefighter (from another house) getting shot by the sniper. The first half of episode 4x14 will involve a number of close calls with the guy, but then he zeros in on the 118 for reasons unknown.
Our favorite firefam are out doing a major rescue. Skyscraper on fire or something. Eddie and Buck are on the roof, securing an injured person into the basket. Bobby is on the ground acting as incident commander. Hen and Chim are attending to the injured on the ground and waiting on the basket to be lowered so they can take that person to the hospital. The sniper suddenly appears on a nearby rooftop. His scope zeros in on Buck’s chest (on the opposing rooftop). He lines up the shot and pulls the trigger. In slow motion, Eddie sees this just as it happens without Buck even realizing, he jumps in front of the bullet, taking it to the shoulder instead of to Buck’s chest. He collapses over top of the injured person in the basket. Buck’s eyes immediately jump to the sniper who start lining up another shot, but then Eddie moans and Buck stops caring. He immediately starts tending to Eddie instead.
“Buckley, Diaz, status report,” Bobby’s voice crackles over the comms.
Buck grabs at his radio. “Eddie’s been shot. Sniper. Roof across the street.”
The show refocuses to our friends on the ground. Chim and Hen are staring at Bobby as they all heard Buck’s call. Bobby looks up to the roof nearby and can’t see the sniper from the ground. Athena walks over. “What happened?”
“The sniper. That roof. Eddie’s down,” he says pointing.
Athena immediately starts ordering the LAPD into position while Bobby sends another crew up to Eddie and Buck on the roof. They secure Eddie into a basket and drop him (and Buck) down to Chim and Hen. The other injured person is passed down to the other crew. Buck helps Chim and Hen get Eddie into the back of the bus. He’s about to close the doors, reluctantly when Bobby’s hand lands on his shoulder. “Go. Let me know how he makes out,” is all he says before pushing Buck into the back of the ambulance with Chim and Eddie. He closes the doors and Hen flips the sirens on as she takes off toward the hospital.
When they arrive, Hen and Chim unload Eddie’s stretcher (he’s out cold now, losing blood; coded in the bus once, but hanging onto life by the skin of his teeth). They pass him off to the waiting ER team and Buck makes to go after them. The nurses, doctors, Chim, and Hen all stare at him, but he swallows. “Pull his chart. I’m Evan Buckley. I’m his emergency contact, power of attorney. I’m not leaving.” Chim and Hen exchange a look, clearly unaware of this until right now. The nurses and doctors shrug and nod as they rush Eddie toward the waiting OR.
The show goes back to show the sniper being taken into custody (in the back of Athena’s car) as Chim and Hen return to the scene. Bobby asks them where Buck is and how Eddie is. And Chim asks him, “Did you know Buck was Eddie’s POA?”
Bobby smiles a little and chuckles slightly. “Nah but doesn’t surprise me. Guess we’re two men down, huh?” Hen and Chim both just shrug and nod as they go back to tending the wounded on the ground.
Taylor shows up to cover the event, specifically the sniper being arrested. She spots the 118 and goes over after her cameras stop rolling. “Where’s Buck?”
 “Hospital with Eddie,” Chim says.
“Oh,” Taylor says. “Was he hurt, too?”
Chim shakes his head. “He’s Eddie’s POA.”
 “What?”
“Power of attorney? He gets to make medical decisions and stuff while Eddie’s out. He has to be there,” Chim explains. Taylor’s a little taken aback but doesn’t say anything.
The show goes back to the hospital. A doctor walks into the waiting room and says, “Mr. Buckley?” Buck’s head pops up from where he’s sitting, lost in his own anxiety over the situation. He stands up and walks over to the doctor who introduces himself. “Mr. Diaz is going to be okay. I just finished up. They’re just getting him cleaned up and moved to recovery. You’ll be able to see him once he’s awake.”
“He’ll be okay?” Buck confirms and the doctor nods.
“A nurse will come and get you once he’s awake.”
“Thank you,” Buck says faintly. The doctor nods again and disappears back through the doors as Buck bursts into relieved tears. He goes back to his seat and sends a few texts first (to Maddie, Chim, Hen, Bobby, and Athena) saying Eddie’s going to be okay and that surgery is over. Then he calls Carla.
“Buckaroo! What do I owe the pleasure?”
 “Carla, are you with Chris?”
“Yeah, what’s wrong?” she asks, clearly sensing the anxiety in Buck’s voice. “Is Eddie okay? What happened?”
 “Did you see the news?”
 “The sniper?”
“Eddie got shot. He… he just got out of surgery. I’m waiting for the nurse to come get me once he wakes up. He’s going to be okay, but he… he coded on the way here…”
“Oh my God, Buck! Are you okay, honey? I’ll keep Christopher just as long as I need to, okay. You make sure to tell Eddie that, alright? I’ll be here with him as long as I need to be.”
 “Thank you,” Buck mumbles.
 “Did you call Ana?”
“What? No,” Buck says. Why would he call her?
 “Abuela and Pepa…”
“They’re next on my list. Listen, just take care of Christopher. I’ll let you know when I know more. Thank you again.”
Once he’s off the phone with Carla, he calls Pepa who’s already with Abuela and relays all the information to them. Abuela wants to come to the hospital, but Pepa says they shouldn’t because of the pandemic and she reluctantly agrees once Buck promises to call them as soon as he knows more. He sits back in the chair and starts fielding responses from his earlier texts until he looks up and sees Ana there. “What’re you doing here?”
“Could ask you the same thing.”
Buck shakes his head. “I’m… I’m his emergency contact… his POA.”
Ana huffs and stomps toward the desk. She’s about to ask the worker for information on Eddie when a nurse walks out of the double doors and calls, “Mr. Buckley?”
Buck gets up and walks over. Ana abandons her position at the desk to walk over, too. “Yes, that’s me,” Buck says. “Is he awake?”
The nurse nods. “Just woke up and already asking for you,” she says with a sweet smile. Buck’s heart flutters a little. The nurse swipes her card to open the double doors and Buck follows her through. She holds out her arm to stop Ana from following them. “Legally authorized persons and immediately family only. You’ll have to wait here.”
“But I’m his girlfriend!” she huffs.
“I’ll let him know you’re here,” the nurse says kindly and then leads Buck down the hall as the doors close on Ana’s face.
As soon as Buck and the nurse walk into Eddie’s room, he smiles and Buck is overwhelmed with relieved tears again. “I’m okay,” Eddie whispers as Buck drops to the chair next to his bed. “I’m okay. I’m fine. Everything’s fine.”
The nurse clears her throat and Eddie looks over at her. “Uh, there was a woman in the waiting room. Says she’s your girlfriend?”
“Oh shit,” Eddie mumbles. “Uh, yeah, yeah, let her in, can you?”
The nurse nods once and disappears from the room. The show goes back to the waiting room where Ana is pacing in front of the double doors, clearly on edge. The nurse reappears. “Mr. Diaz has authorized your visit,” she says with a smile. “Come with me.”
Ana follows the nurse back the hallway to Eddie’s room. She freezes in the doorway at the sight of Buck holding Eddie’s hand, finally crying the last of his tears as Eddie continues to reassure him that everything’s okay. Then she shakes her head and clears her throat as she walks forward. Eddie looks up at her and smiles politely. “Edmundo,” she croaks. “What the hell happened?”
Buck looks a little taken aback by the use of Eddie’s full name but sits back in the chair. He goes to release Eddie’s hand, but Eddie only holds his tighter. “Uh, well, I was shot.” Ana gives him a look. “Right. You knew that. Um, that sniper that’s been targeting first responders,” he explains. “He, uh, showed up on the roof top next to the one where Buck and I were trying to secure a victim in a basket. I saw just as he pulled the trigger, clearly aimed right at Buck’s chest and I put myself in front of it.”
Buck looks up, wide-eyed at that revelation. “You what?” Ana demands.
Before Eddie can say anything, Buck croaks out, “Why would you do that?”
Eddie’s eyes move from Ana to Buck and his expression softens. “You’re my best friend. I promised to always have your back.” He shrugs a little, wincing in pain.
“You have a child!” Ana rages, stepping closer. “How were we supposed to explain to Christopher that you DIED because you took a bullet for HIM!?!?”
“I didn’t die,” Eddie says calmly. “And if I had, Christopher would’ve understood. Buck’s his best friend, too.”
Ana looks positively enraged, but then Buck mumbles, “It hasn’t felt like it recently.”
Edie looks back to Buck, confused, hurt. He’s clearly trying to figure out what Buck means and then as he racks his brain, it slowly dawns on him. Ever since he started dating Ana, she’s taken Buck’s place in their lives in a lot of ways. Now when they have movie nights it’s with Ana, not Buck. When they go places on Eddie’s days off it’s with Ana, not Buck and he sees the hurt on his best friend’s face, and he realizes what he’s done. “I’m sorry,” is all he can think to say. Buck looks up at him. “I didn’t realize, Buck. I’m sorry.”
 “It’s okay,” Buck mumbles.
“No, it’s not. I was trying to figure out why Chris was being so reluctant. Why he wouldn’t tell me what was bugging him for the past couple months and I… I just realized why. God, I’m so dumb. I’m so sorry.”
“It’s okay,” Buck says again. “Oh, and he’s with Carla and she said she’ll keep him as long as necessary.”
“Thank you,” Eddie mumbles with a soft smile, “for everything.”
Buck can’t help but smile gently back and then Ana huffs in frustration and they both turn to her, having forgot she was even in the room. “Someone care to tell me what the hell is going on right now?”
“It’s complicated,” Eddie offers, and Buck just sighs a little. Eddie glances at him and knows what he needs to do.
The show cuts away from the hospital to Christopher and Carla at Eddie’s house. “When will my dad be home?” Christopher asks.
“Um,” Carla says slowly. “I’m not sure.”
 “What?”
She takes a deep breath. “Your dad got hurt. At work. Um, Buck was at the hospital with him, and I called Ms. Flores and she was going to go over, too.”
 “Is he okay?”
“He will be,” Carla says diplomatically. “Buck said he’d call when he knew more.”
 “Can I call Buck?”
Carla nods. “I think that would be okay.” She pulls out her phone and sends Buck a quick text telling him that Christopher wants to talk to him. Buck replies to give him just a minute and then a minute later Carla’s phone rings with a call from Buck. She hands it to Christopher who smiles at Buck’s name on the screen and answers the call.
 “Hey, Superman!” Buck says.
 “BUCK! Is my dad okay?”
“He will be,” Buck says, echoing Carla’s words. “I was just talking to him, but he’s talking to Ms. Flores now.”
“I don’t like her,” Christopher confides.
 “Really?”
“Mmhmm,” Christopher says quietly, glance at Carla whose eyebrow is raised. “Ever since he started dating her, I haven’t gotten to see you at all. And She doesn’t let me do anything fun and I never get to play video games.” He just goes off on this long list of ways he doesn’t like Ana and why he misses Buck.
“Wanna have a sleepover at my house tonight? I don’t think they’re gonna let your dad come home yet, so just you and me, what d’you say?” Buck asks.
 “Can we?” Christopher asks excitedly.
“Let me ask your dad, but I bet he’ll say yes.”
“Can… Can I talk to him?”
“Let’s see if he’s still awake,” Buck says.
The show goes back to the hospital perspective. Buck walks back into Eddie’s room (a real hospital room, not recovery now) to find Eddie and Ana in a heated argument. But just as he enters, Ana huffs a final sigh and turns to leave. She pushes past Buck. “Have fun with that,” she practically growls, and Buck raises an eyebrow before turning to Eddie who has an apologetic look on his face.
“Um, Christopher wants to talk to you,” Buck says, offering Eddie the phone. He smiles just barely and takes it as he starts talking to Christopher.

it’s survivors (911 4x14) and captain mehta is still the defacto incident commander. even if it’s only for the few minutes they are still on the scene.
we’ve already seen him jump into action during suspicion (911 4x13) and this ep starts exactly where that one left off. capt mehta keeping buck's head down while he stares at eddie under the firetruck.
and then buck’s moving. as we all knew he would.
but while buck’s crawling toward eddie, shouting for him to hang on, mehta’s rounding up his own team. we know this because two firefighters have appeared at mehta’s side. a masked female paramedic (I am basing this on her blue medical gloves) and a male firefighter. he’s constantly calling, bringing his people to him.
the firefighter climbs into the cabin first and helps buck haul a wounded eddie into the jump seats. there’s chaos and incoherent shouting and broken glass raining down on his head but mehta’s loud and clear. get him in the cabin! and get to the trucks! all while helping buck push eddie up and into safety and shielding the paramedic with his body.
he’s the last one inside. climbs into the captain’s seat while a third older firefighter jumps into the driver’s seat. mehta’s got his people and now it’s time to GO GO GO GO GO as another bullet almost takes him out. cracks the windshield directly in front of him.
and that’s three shots. three times he’s been in the line of fire in as many minutes. pushing buck out of the way. the open door of the firetruck. the windshield.
but that’s mehta’s job. to make sure his team is safe. and their not safe yet. he’s directing the truck to backup backup backup backup. get them out of line of fire and get eddie to the hospital.
and it doesn’t stop. he doesn’t stop. mehta’s barely paused for breath before he’s back on the radio with dispatch. requesting a trauma unit at the closest hospital and listing off the incident details. we have a firefighter with gunshot wound. firefighter eddie diaz of the 118.
the sirens are on and they’re rushing thru traffic. but mehta’s eyes aren’t on the road. he’s half turned in his seat and monitoring the situation. sees how little the bandage buck slaps onto eddie’s wound stems the flow of blood. and we can hear him in the background telling the hospital they’ll need more. a lot more.
because while buck and the two members of the 133 are trying to save eddie. while the driver is speeding to the hospital. while they are all doing their jobs. mehta’s doing his. he’s the lifeline. the voice of reason. loud and clear above the sirens. above buck’s desperate pleas to eddie.
and yeah, buck might be the first one off the truck, when they roll up to the hospital. but mehta’s right behind him. helps lift eddie down onto the gurney. calmly but clearly lists eddie’s situation to the trauma doctors. thru and thru. upper torso. large caliber.
and then there’s a beat. mehta stops shouting for the first time since this all started.
it was a sniper.
then he’s moving. not running, like the rest of the 133 are, but steadfastly following eddie inside. until he pauses. just for a moment. because buck’s stopped moving. we can see the shock setting in once more. are you okay buckley? mehta’s looking directly at buck who’s staring after eddie.
and yeah, mehta’s still in motion. keeps moving to follow his team into the hospital. and we don’t see anymore. but I know. we all know. capt mehta will stop for real.
because capt mehta is the defacto incident commander. he stepped up. took charge. he saw the ambulances drive off with the civilian victims. made sure the remaining 133 were on the ladder truck. called dispatch and reported the sniper. tackled buck to the ground and made sure eddie got to the hospital.
and there’s still more to do. mehta will need to call his team and make sure they’re all safe at the 133. he’ll be on and off with dispatch and the police and swat all night.
but he takes that moment. because he can see, as clear as we can, the fear and shock and trauma written plainly on buck’s face. the quiet devasting no. no I am not okay.
and we know from everything else we’ve seen mehta do that he won’t leave buck standing there all alone. won’t abandon him. instead he’ll turn around. will make sure buck’s moving. get him inside and get him checked out while eddie gets wheeled into surgery. he’ll stay with him until bobby arrives.
because today, the 118 boys are his.
