The Sekoto Peak Tournament

It’s kinda funny how My Hero Academia is pretty much told through the lens of Midoriya’s perspective to the point where all other professions that have a fan following:  athletes, actors, singers, etc. just go completely by the wayside.  Just once, it would have been great to have Kirishima or someone mention a household name and Midoriya’s all, “…..?”

“Y’know, [insert name here?]  Legendary boxing champion?”

My point is, other professions outside of hero still exist and are probably just as popular as they’ve always been, so here’s the ‘Young Rei used to snowboard competitively’ headcanon.  This started as a piece I did for Inktober with a, ‘Rei’s a refridgerated character.  Don’t love that,’ attitude.   Because aside from finally making an attempt to fight for her family (a little late, sure, but I’m not here to do a character analysis right now,) Rei doesn’t have much characterization beyond being the victimized mother in Shouto’s story.

So two things to consider:

1.) Snowboarding is a high-intensity activity.  High intensity activities are known to reduce stress, anxiety and depression.  So Rei having this career before marriage (and possibly a little after) would have had a very positive impact on her mental health.  But after having four children, something this intense would be difficult to restart and being in her late twenties when Natsuo and Shouto were born, her professional career would have been effectively over.  Being cut off from snowboarding and its mental health benefits would have definitely contributed to her downward spiral in a more significant way than if she had never done it.  In its own way, this is also a reflection of Touya having all his energy and ambition and nowhere to put it, contributing to his own mental break.

2.) In both my Inktober post and this piece, Rei won gold and she’s wearing a different jacket, showing these were separate competitions.  Winning gold wasn’t a one-off moment; she was relatively successful and that may have served as some unspoken tension/resentment between her and Endeavor if she was one of the top competitors in her profession while her husband never made it past second place until over two decades into his.

I like the idea of this background for her.  I want to explore it further possibly as a one-shot, but I have a lot of ongoing projects right now (plus I’d need to do a little more research on how professional snowboarding competitions work,) so it’s a little up in the air whether or not an actual fic will happen.  For now, I hope you enjoy the artwork.

I also referenced Touya’s freaky smile for these, albeit not quite as intense.  He got that from someone, and my money is on Mom.  Mostly because I am entertained by the idea of a much younger Rei rocketing down a mountainside and terrifying other snowboarders with the same ecstatic, unhinged smile her son has.  And that footage probably exists online somewhere, someone in Class 1A is going to find it, and be all,  “Uh, Todoroki, I think I found a video of your mom.”

And just in case anyone asks:  Yes, that is Korra in the back.  I like to sneak crossover cameos into both my fanart and fanfics, and when thinking of characters, I remembered a behind the scenes LOK fact that Korra’s character design was partially inspired by female snowboarders.

The third snowboarder is also a cameo from a more obscure, nostalgia cartoon:  Suzy Lu from Storm Hawks.

Genesis: He tried to do skiing to compete with Sephiroth but kept crossing his skis and falling. He also hates how skis force him to walk like the clown he really is. He goes to snowboarding instead because he thinks it looks cooler. He sees Sephiroth trying to do skiing tricks so he very competitively tries to learn the most dangerous, impressive snowboarding tricks.

Grusha Headcanons

Grusha avoids social and networking events as far as possible. Even though his role as Gym Leader demands a certain degree of public engagement, he finds it exceedingly difficult to sustain conversations, and often comes across as aloof and rude without meaning to. Rather than risk saying something tactless, he engages as little as possible.

He joined the League a few months before Ryme did, but he has taken much longer to settle into his role. Despite being relatively new to the professional battle scene, critics rank him as one of the strongest Gym Leaders in Paldea, with the makings to become an Elite in future. Geeta has dropped similar hints during his annual performance reviews. But the praise does not always register; he doubts his ability and dwells on defeats, which often leads to him avoiding more challenging opponents. 

Grusha did not have great interest in pokémon battles when he was younger. Neither of his parents were trainers, but they pressed him to try an array of sports and other pursuits throughout childhood, both battling and coordinating among them. Of the countless activities he dabbled in, snowboarding was the only one that truly seized his interest, but now that this path has closed to him, he has fallen back on alternative pursuits. Competitive battle still does not wholly engage him - but it is, at the very least, something he can feel good at. 

His battle style is notable for how he manipulates visibility during matches. His signature technique utilises tailwinds combined with hailstorms and haze, which makes it exceedingly difficult for opposing trainers and their pokémon to see what is happening on the battlefield. His own team, all trained to rely on senses other than sight, are well adapted to fighting in such conditions. The technique is highly effective, but League officials have gently (but firmly) discouraged him from using it in more public matches, because low visibility hurts spectator enjoyment. 

When he was younger, Grusha kept his hair short. It was only during the long, listless year after his injury that he grew it out, largely because he couldn’t summon the energy to book a haircut. He has since decided that he prefers it that way. Occasionally, he experiments with his appearance in other ways, such as with nail polish and makeup, but he is intensely private about it, especially now he is back in the public eye. 

He does not tend to keep his pokémon in pokéballs unless he has to, as they are adjusted to roaming alone on Glaseado mountain. His weavile is especially reluctant to be contained. While Grusha has good control of his team on the battlefield, he is lax in domestic settings - he lets his pokémon sleep where they please, and even feeds them food from his own plate. 

Grusha did some occasional modelling as a child, largely due to his mother’s insistence and fashion connections. He has taken on similar work as an adult, but he feels more self-conscious in front of a camera than he used to, uncertain of how to stand and hold himself. 

Due to how recently he entered his role, he is not especially close to anyone in the League. At the few social functions he attends, Rika is one of the few to always strike up a conversation with him, but he assumes she is only being polite. Her blatant attempts to flirt are also taken as politeness.   

Before his altaria evolved, she liked to settle in his hair and sleep on his head. She still attempts to do it now, even though she is rather too heavy for it.

Personal headcanon: The day you fight Grusha in-game is not the anniversary of his accident. The recovery period of the accident was so long that it completely scrambled his sense of time, and as a result he has no idea of the exact date it happened on.

Instead, I raise you two other possibilities:

-It's the anniversary of when he announced his official retirement, following weeks of speculation.

-It's the date of a major tournament which, if he were able to, he would definitely be competing in (and he's also tired of people asking him if he's watching it this year because of course he's not, it hurts to watch)

Are the Batfam Skiers or Snowboarders

Bruce skis for sure. Idk he just gives me those vibes. He probably knows how to snowboard but just prefers skiing. He will attempt small tricks and can usually succeed but refuses to do anything more cause of his ‘old bones.’

He wears all black. Jason and Steph eventually got a jacket with the bat symbol on it and he now where’s that religiously. His skis are really nice and are black with white streaks. His helmet is black and has those attachable ears that make it look like a bat (gift from Dick ‘to complete the look).

Dick for sure skis. Mostly because when he first saw skiing, it was at the Olympics and the jumps reminded him of the trapeze. So he skis really well and can do jumps. Occasionally will fall and lay there, laughing. He only goes with his siblings (usually Jason) since it’s more fun that way.

He wears blue pants, silver boots, and a black coat with the blue Nightwing sunbird on his chest. His helmet is blue and black mixed. His skis are black and blue. He also has attachable ears he wears with Bruce ‘to match’.

Steph is a snowboarder, the chaotic energy with the disregard for safety is her. But she’s the kind of snowboarder that will stop and help people up when they fall and maybe teach kids a thing or two.

She wears purple, her jacket is a lighter purple. Her board has a white base, and purple/green flames on the edges with a skull in the middle. Her boots are black and her helmet is gold and purple (very deep almost black.)

Barbara is a skier, just cause I feel like that’s her. But she probably knows how to snowboard and does sometimes. She’s about 70/30 about it. After she’s shot, she can’t do either but everyone bought her a sled with skis on the bottom so she could still go down the runs if she wanted to.

She wears gold pants, black jacket with a bat on the back. Her helmet is all black. Her boots are black and her snowboard is all gold with bats all over it. Her sled is black (so people can easily see her) with a Giant bat on the front and and Damian painted on the flames.

Jason is both, equally, but he snowboards more since he likes to do jumps and tricks a LOT. He’s probably on par with Dick. He likes the technical challenge of skiing but the fun of snowboarding. (He also like snowboarding cause the boots. Btw, as a skier, I am eternally jealous of those boots they look so much more comfortable). He’ll just randomly meet kids on their first ever run and decide to go down with them to help, once he spent the day with a kid who was left alone by his friends, very fun.

He, of course, wears a red helmet. He wears black pants with a lot of pockets, and a plain brown jacket (he bought it for himself and still uses it but not often), currently a brown jacket with a red bat on the back (gift from Dick). His snowboard is black with a red skeleton on the side (it’s like pulling itself up) in a graveyard. He wanted to put his name on a grave but decided not to bc his family would be upset, (he does, it’s just hidden and very tiny).

Damian I feel like snowboards but knows how to ski. He probably snowboards more because he better at it and thinks it’s cooler (but would never say it). He tried to teach Jon but was terrible. Alfred ended up teaching him but they still had fun.

He wears a gray jacket with black sleeves, and black pants. His helmet is black but has those spikes on it (gift from Jon) that every kid has. His board is just plain black until Jason stole it and got it customized with a ninja on the bottom with a katana.

Tim snowboards, it fits him. He doesn’t know how to ski and refuses to learn. He just likes snowboarding better. If really pressed he’ll try skiing but would prefer to never do it. He feels like hes flying and he looks like he’s not even trying at all. Arms not moving, chill relaxed posture.

He wears a muted red jacket, black pants, and gold helmet. His board is is black and gold, it was stolen and returned with a Red Robin on the bottom about to fly.

Duke doesn’t know how to do either until Jason and Alfred teach him. He ends up liking both equally but snowboards more because it’s easier for him to do.

He wears all gold with black boots and a black bat on the jacket. His board is straight gold with a large black bat on the bottom and a kinda metal/tech look. He has the ears as well, in gold.

Cass skis, she likes the feeling of being more technically challenged. She wants to try snowboarding but hasn’t really found the time. If she did, she’d go with Steph and Jason. They’re good teachers and fun to be with.

She used to wear all black but changed the jacket out for one with a gold bat on the bat and gold in the tops of the shoulder and top of the sleeves. She has the ears but doesn’t always wear them bc she forgets to put them on.

Alfred does both extremely well. He prefers skiing but taught all of the Batfam. He was a spy of course he knows how to ski in a suit. He can do anything with doing either. He has all the gear, waxes, and boots in tip top shape. Despite what most would think, he loves to ski and goes the most often out of the family.

He is honestly the most difficult to do, he could ski in a suit and that would work. So, he wears a gray pants, a gray jacket the the top of shoulders and sleeves are black. His ski boots are black and his skis are somehow more expensive than Bruce’s. They were a gift but he won’t say who. His helmet is black. He does not wear the ears, but if with family, he will wear them so they can pick each other out of the crowd.

he gets billy to do a lesson for day 1 and by the end of the day he's cruising. it feels natural and sure it's not california sun on his face but the way the lights glow orange on the powder makes him feel some type of way. its fucking FUN. he's hooked and for a minute he doesnt hate indiana

Ohmygod! How did all the readers react to Chris being sexiest man alive?!

She’s in the process of making sure that every single one of the properties they have will have said photos. She’s also planning a big celebration on that Friday. Kardashian has shirts made. Everyone is sent shirts. She’s got the pictures blown up and in her office (her mom does too). She surprised him on set with a cake. She humbly put in her Instagram bio “married to the sexiest man alive.”

News Reporter happily made the announcement for those who missed hadn’t seen it yet and bragged that it is her man.

Teen costar took to social media and asked for an immediate recall.

Animator sent him a drawing of Dodger with the sash that says “Goodest Boy Alive.” With Chris standing next to him in his own sash.

Hajime Hinata – Ultimate Snowboarder

This one is funny to me bc there's a storyblog I follow with Hajime as one of the main characters and rn he's going skiing and snowboarding with some of the other characters XD

...this will no longer be relevant by the time this has gone through the queue lmao but shoutout to @/a-student-out-of-time for being an amazing storyblog

He was around three or four when he took his first snowboarding lesson, and from there he continued to improve every time he went. He started going a lot more in his early teen years.

Entering competitions was something he just did for fun; at first, he didn’t think he would actually win, but he was soon proved wrong on that front. He won quite a few in a row.

Rather than shooting for the Olympics, Hajime figured he would rather have a longer professional career. That way, at least for the time being, he could balance that with school more easily.

His classmates like coming with him to ski or snowboard, and he likes spending that time with them. He usually slows down to their pace then and doesn’t really show off.

Because of all the practice he puts in, he’s really accustomed to cold weather and actually prefers it to warmer weather. His classmates think he’s pretty crazy for that.

What about, learning to snowboard with Mikko

ahhh anon, I am a snowsports girl (like, literally, the sport i did growing up was slalom skiing) so I love the idea of learning to snowboard with Mikko:

Mikko is an athlete. You know how much work he puts into his body, he knows it, the world knows it. So when he suggests a weekend learning to snowboard in Vail (after clearing it with the team, liability waivers and all), you happily agree.

And yeah, maybe he knows that it's going to be very different from ice skating, he's not stupid - but he is definitely not prepared for how different.

After you hire the boots and the boards (already having borrowed the snow jacks and salopettes from friends), the private instructor takes you through all the basics, nice and easy, and it's easy to see in Mikko's face how hesitant he is. This is the guy who's full emotions are expressed on his face at all times, so it isn't difficult to read him in the slightest.

It only takes a soft questioning smile from you for him to steady himself though.

Mikko's not stupid, he's not going to go wild or do too much too soon, no way. He does actually want to learn (definitely seems like the kind of guy who takes things seriously when they matter) so he would definitely pay full attention to the instructor and accept all the help he needs.

It does help that you manage to take a video of him successfully traversing down the mountain without him falling, as well as couple of awesome action shots, which all help to make him feel better about it all.

And the best part? Drinking hot chocolate with you in the chalet he rented at the end of the day - he's aching all over, okay? He needs to relax after that long hard day, and he knows the best way to do that is with you. Maybe in the hot tub.
