It’s like watching a slow-motion train wreck from the conductor’s seat.
[Image description: A 4-panel cartoon by Autball.
1: Autism (a round, gold, squiggly figure) is pushing a red button on a console and speaking into a microphone. There is an image of a red figure with a neutral face on a screen above the console. Autism says, “And then this one time, at orchestra camp…” We see a black, shriveled figure with three white bandages from the back, watching what’s happening, who says, “Oh Jesus. Autism’s oversharing again.”
2: Three figures - Anxiety (green, round, wobbly looking), ADHD (orange, firework shaped), and Inertia (purple sphere) - sit on a curved white couch. Behind them is Autism speaking into the console (where the red figure now looks to their left) and the black, shriveled figure. Anxiety looks worried and says, “See? I knew this party was a bad idea.” ADHD replies, “Oh, you think everything is a bad idea.”
3: Same scene, except the red figure is now looking to the right, and we can see that the black figure is named Rejection Sensitivity. Inertia says, “I tried to put on the brakes but they were already too far gone.” Rejection Sensitivity looks angry and says, “Well where the hell is impulse control?!” ADHD shrugs and replies, “Fuck if I know.”
4: Same scene, except the red figure clearly looks like they want to escape. Rejection Sensitivity looks distressed and says, “This is a disaster! I can never show my face here again! When will they ever learn??” Anxiety smiles and says, “I know. I’ll keep ‘em up the next few nights replaying the whole thing over and over again. Maybe that’ll do the trick!” Inertia sighs and says, “You know it won’t, but you do you.”]
