Ok, so ed is traumatized by threats of autocannibalism from his previous captain. [Aka boss] And when he is spiraling in self destruction, he does that exact thing to his close friend (+whipping boy?)

In his death images, the electrical activity happening as the body dies, his big radical shift in perspective is to place his behavior in the identity of his former abuser. And continue his own identity, "ed" in contrast, and at the whims of that person.

Now, the captain continues his life forward. Nourishes his body. Does what he has to do. And even, in this moment, treats him with respect! Dignity, even.

But underlying, there is a threat. Ed is afraid.

I think Ed has sought power to escape the abuses of hierarchy, and used those violences himself to get there. To build an image.

This made him lose himself, in a lot of ways. It's extreme masking trauma. It's made him feel so trapped that he has become suicidal, long before canon.

Ed realizes that to continue to be a pirate, he would rather himself be dead.

Born to a family of dominants hoping to climb the echelons of sociery, Rodolfo Galvez became a source of shame for the Galvezes. Unlike most children and adoloscents who remained identified until their non-physical characteristics became apparent, Rodolfo had no chance of hiding his birthmark. Not well at least, since it was located on top of his right cheekbone.

So he grew up hidden in the Galvez house. Away from people his age. All he had were his siblings and his tutors. Tutors who seemingly tried to mold him as the dom that he wasn’t.

For awhile, Rodolfo lived as they wanted, not knowing that there was any other way to live.

His parents told him that they have plans for him. That they’ll find the perfect dom who can provide the comfort and luxury befitting a Galvez. Even if he was a sub. But Rodolfo highly doubted it since they didn’t even want anyone to know about him. He feared that he would live and die in his family’s terms. 

At the age of 18, Rodolfo managed to find the perfect opportunity to sneak out, charming a dom who worked in the house grounds into letting him out. He spent a day and a night in the real world, experiencing what it was like for the world to judge him so openly with a mark that he can’t hide. It both scared him and excited him. 

He spent a day and a night, just walking around the city until his family finally found him and took him back to their home.

His escape lead to a story about a sub hiding amongst doms breaking out. Whispers amongst their circles started to spread which tightened the figurative noose around Rodolfo’s neck. Unfortunately, that wouldn’t be enough to keep him safe from Rosewood Manor’s traffickers who knew the allure of seemingly pristine subs like Rodolfo.

Rodolfo was sent to the manor’s sub-breakers only for them to find that Rodolfo was a hundred percent willing to denounce his own free will. There was barely even work needed to be done in his case at all.

To him, being in Rosewood living as a sub was being free.

Now that he was ‘free’, Rodolfo likes to throw caution to the wind. Deprived of acting out as a child, Rodolfo will try most things right off the bat once tempted enough, no matter the risk that it poses.

As a sub for hire, Rodolfo aimed to please. There was no fight in him which the docile-loving subs liked.

Hidden away for so long, Rodolfo liked being seen. The stage was perfect for him where guests and co-workers alike get to see him. His birth mark on his face marking him as a submissive was now for everyone to see.

It’s his third year living and working in the Manor.

If the world was going to treat him like shit anyway, then he might as well enjoy himself. On his own terms. Somewhat.
