FIRST OF ALL the way you phrased this is fucking hilarious to me. Second, yes they did :eyes: they're twin brothers. That is honestly all I know about them from before...apparently turning into a hollowghast completely wipes your memories. Something about you losing your peculiar soul. I haven't read the series in AGES and I am winging it because I do not have the time or energy to read them all again plus the new books but I'm like 99% sure that is correct.

So even though they did know each other, it doesn't matter. They do not remember who they were so they are definitely going off vibes. Walter is a hollowghast and while he can understand Colin, he can't communicate back- hollows have funky vocal cords. He also cannot be seen by Colin unless he's eating, and he has a tendency to wander off when he's hungry. Colin has gotten good at figuring out where he is though, either by sound, his shadows, following up on reports of farmer's animals being slaughtered by (what they believe are) wolves, etc etc. He'll be standing there and will say something like, "I know you're there. I can smell you. go brush your teeth, you smell like sheep guts" and Walter will trip him with one of his tongues. They may not remember being brothers but they act like it sometimes
