For the Ask Game: Leia/female!Han

I don't remember the structure of the meme, to be honest, but I can still answer! I am deeply ambivalent about this ship.

On the one hand: female Han sounds super hot, ngl (100x more than canon Han in my totally unbiased opinion). Just the aesthetic and general dynamic would be way more appealing that way.

On the other: if it was otherwise exactly like canon, I would have the same gripes around Han ignoring Leia's explicit and repeated rejections and the whole "I know what you need and want more than you do" thing. That's still fucked-up between women.

But back to the first: in the wildly unlikely scenario that their scenes had been written with Leia/female!Han, I think that that aspect of Han's characterization and the Han/Leia dynamic are so drenched in tropes around masculinity and heterosexuality that it probably would have leaned into other tropes (undoubtedly some would be homophobic ones! but differently problematic than canon).

And while female Luke is (obviously) much more appealing and interesting to me than female Han, I think it would be fun to envision a female Han who wasn't so 1980. If she was still cool and swaggering some of the time but sometimes landing at tryhard and dorky instead, and a loyal friend etc, but better with consent and not some homophobic stereotype, I would probably find the ship really appealing.

Edit 05.09.23: I no longer support AI art. This has been true for a while but I haven't updated my intro. If you go back far enough you may find some art. When I first got into it I thought they used only free photo databases and only art that had entered public domain. I know this was naive now. I liked the hyperrealistic style renders that could generate character inspiration. I didn't know how much art was being stolen and how many styles were being replicated nonconsenually. Honestly when I got into it I was being very delusional. So it took me a while to accept that what was happening with AI art was happening. Using AI art tools for fun was not as completely harmless as it first appeared. I don't want to help that industry, but I do hope one day AI art could be different. Not a threat. Because the programming potential would not be a replacement of human art. AI programming is a special interest bc I think the field needs people who care about the ethics of how AI technology is used. I sometimes blog about AI art in reference to this interest in understanding the industry of AI as a whole and how it can be used for justified choices.

Hmm 🤔 I’m gonna go with Kylo Ren, aka Ben Solo, cause I’ve never been a fan. But, I actually really like the idea of his character—a child of Leia and Han struggling with the weight of their family history and being turned to the dark side in a very similar way as their grandfather—that’s interesting! I also like that he killed Han (😭) cause it immediately makes you go “oh, this guy has now crossed the line Vader never fully crossed” and I think that was an interesting set up, even if I’m not a fan of a lot that we got.

I am in loooove with the planet Lothal, and the idea of planet-specific Jedi. Like, Jedi of waaaay old who had outpost temples on various planets throughout the galaxy and developed a bit of their own cultures and styles, and who were protectors of various secrets and special Force things, like the World Between Worlds entrance. I’m also obsessed with the implications of the Loth wolves, and Dume specifically, and of these planet specific Force entities that are kinda like nature spirits or gods, and the idea of beings that aren’t really of the light or dark but of nature itself, which is neutral—but not to be confused with peaceful or non-reactive (i.e., a tiger is neither good nor evil, but if you pull its tail, it will attack you). But also the implications of Dume, specifically, and the cyclical nature of time and the nature of destiny in the SW universe.

idk, I just think that stuff is the coolest shit ever and really is one of my favorite parts of SW.

Okay, so I have been thinking about this one a lot @lurking-latinist and I would like to tell you that I think you have officially BROKEN me because I am not at all sure I have a fave platonic relationship for SW, which is impossible. I always have at least six! (There are plenty I like but a) are they actually platonic? /looks at Luke and Leia, for example and b) do I like them any more than any others? and c) do they like exist in giffable form? and also d) is R2D2 and C3P0 a healthy relationship anyway????)

So, I thought a lot more and if I narrowed it down to the prequels which are somehow My Star Wars despite everything, I'm like, well, I have a lot of Padme and the twins feels!

Which would be a short gifset or one where I'd have to go hunt down parallels (very cool but i am not currently in SW mode and you have to be in SW mode to rewatch to that degree).

14.  Fave Fight THE MUSTAFAR FIGHT IS PURE PAIN AND DRAMATICS AND I LOVE IT THE MOST OF ANYTHING EVER If you’ve ever heard Nick Gillard talk about how he wrote the Mustafar fight, it’s heartbreaking:

And:  “My take on the whole duel was that Obi-Wan is the central character in that duel. He wouldn’t try and kill Anakin. The way I saw that fight was like having a fight with your girlfriend. That she’s just lost it and that she’s coming at you with everything she’s got. […] So you try to defend her as long as you can until she breaks down. Then you can give her a cuddle.“ The reason that fight endures even if special effects look more polished in other movies (though, considering it’s 15 years old, the movie is still gorgeous imo) is because this fight means EVERYTHING. It isn’t just about two Jedi at these incredible heights of their powers or that it was a triumph of choreography and effects, but that this was about everything these two characters couldn’t let continue and it was about the heartbreak of what they meant to each other. This is the climax of the prequels for a reason, that it was the culmination of all the movies, that it came down to these two characters who loved each other so much and it was all burnt to ash, just like everything else around them.  It was about two characters who were supposed to fight side by side, who had fought side by side, we saw them, we saw the way they were in sync with each other, we saw the way their fighters dipped and twirled like they were one, we saw the arcs of their lightsabers coming down on the droids in the elevator like twin images, we saw Anakin refusing to leave Obi-Wan behind, we saw Obi-Wan’s grin when he raced off with Anakin to spring the trap. This was a fight about Obi-Wan desperately trying to get Anakin to come back, that he wasn’t giving this his all because he wanted Anakin to stop and think, to come back out of the dark.  This was Anakin feeling like he had to turn on everyone who loved him because he had gotten lost in the dark and couldn’t admit the terrible things he’d done and was still doing, that they had to agree with him or they were against him, he couldn’t see beyond that and so forced them into these horrible situations. But it’s also a fight that’s about showing us how well these two characters know each other, that the fight just drags on and on and on because nobody knows each other the way these two know each other. They are complements to each other, torn into terrible jagged edged weapons against each other.

All those flourishes and twirls and kicks and it’s not just badass that they can’t land a hit on each other, that these are two incredibly trained Jedi, it’s not just the WHIRLING DEATH IF THEY MOVE SO MUCH AS A CENTIMETER OUT OF PLACE, it’s not just that AMAZING move in that last gif where Anakin twirls his saber BEHIND HIS BACK AND THEN JUST KEEPS GOING and that Obi-Wan deflects every single swing and never really launches his own because he’s trying to get Anakin back-- It’s about how well these two characters know each other, what it means that they can read each other so well that neither of them gets so much as a singe mark until the very end, when Anakin overestimates himself and Obi-Wan finally has to put a stop to it. Nothing has ever matched the sheer emotional weight of this fight for me, nor the sheer DRAMATICS OF SETTING IT ON A LAVA PLANET, GOD, THE PREQUELS WENT HARDCORE AND I LOVE THEM FOR IT

1, 3, 7

1. Fave movie: I unironically, totally, honestly adore The Last Jedi, although I've found the fandom Discourse surrounding it emotionally draining and unpleasant to the point I don't particularly enjoy talking about it any more, which is a shame.

Least fave movie: Attack of the Clones. It's not even close. It alternates between being absolutely horrid and immensely boring.

3. Fave TV ep: Rebels ep! As a massive Hera stan I absolutely love Homecoming, as we get a really good look into Hera and how growing up in a family of fighters during a war forged her affected her.

And it's great that they make Cham Syndulla, the Free Ryloth resistance hero we met in TCW a complex figure: a renowned strategist with a bad case of tunnel vision and major shortcomings as a father, reacting to his wife's death by throwing himself obsessively into fighting the Empire to avenge her, and forgetting that still he had a grieving little girl badly in need of comfort and her only remaining parent. The scene where Hera tells Ezra about this is heartbreaking, and you can see from it why she regards her crew as family and doesn't like them leaving her. *smacks Cham* Still, I do like how they each get a chance to air their grievances and, despite Cham being a jackass and sabotaging the mission, become close again by the end, because Cham finally listens to Hera (and tells her he's proud of her! Sweet parental validation!)

Also, Kanan acting like a flustered teen meeting his girlfriend's dad and getting his crewmates's names wrong when introducing himself to Cham is hilariously adorable and one of the rare times I find him likeable.

Least fave TV ep: Also Rebels, The World Between Worlds. I will forever die on the hill that Ahsoka should have been killed on Malachor by Vader, as that was both the natural and most beautifully tragic conclusion to her arc and the Anakin/Ahsoka relationship. Having Ezra step back through time to save her from Vader's lightsaber is a giant cop-out that retrospectively seems to have been done as a way to make the search for Ezra not be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Also because she's a creator's pet. Ugh. (Season 4 of Rebels in general just sucks.)

7. Fave species: TWI'LEKS TWI'LEKS TWI'LEKS.

Aside from the fact they are by some margin the coolest and prettiest species with their lekku and rainbow colours, what I love most about them is they are a proud people who fight against anyone trying to slap chains on them or put a boot on their neck (even Oola, the original dancing girl, wouldn't meekly submit to the gross Jabba).

Least fave species: The Hutts. Disgusting, slimy, crimey, space slug things.

I immediately started making up rules for myself because I'm that kind of person, so I'm excluding a) fics that I've never put on AO3 and b) fics that I'm not very far into actually writing (I was tempted to include Love, Pride & Delicacy but no, it's early days). Also, my faves are not perfectly consistent over time. BUT at this moment, in no particular order:

per ardua ad astra: Jyn/Cassian Star Wars AU where Jyn, Cassian, and Bodhi escape Scarif in an Imperial shuttle only to get caught in the Death Star's tractor beam and forced to pass themselves off as Imperials. Mostly but not quite finished & on hiatus, and uneven in points, but a true labor of love <3

First Impressions: m!Elizabeth/f!Darcy retelling of P&P. Complete! I had to wrap it up very quickly at the end for the exchange it was part of, but it's still my baby.

The Jedi and the Sith Lord: the third fic in my f!Luke Skywalker series, The Adventures of Lucy Skywalker, and easily my favorite part of it; apart from a few localized changes in the first two fics, they were mostly glued to the rails of canon to set up the "real" story of TJATSL (and its outlined but unwritten sequel). This one starts with Lucy being taken captive at Cloud City by Vader to turn her to the Dark Side before the Emperor/patriarchy can strike her down, and follows their perspectives during her direct captivity. Technically completed but in a setting-up-the-sequel way.

the gift of men: a fic about Eldarion’s youthful marriage to one of Faramir and Éowyn’s daughters/a sort of guided tour through the early Fourth Age in Gondor as seen by Eldarion. This is easily my least popular fic on this list for some predictable reasons, but I really enjoyed writing it (over several years, though it’s only 1k!).

in tongues and quiet sighs: back to SW! This is a companion piece to my now you’re the future series about Jyn and Cassian (and only Jyn and Cassian) making it off Scarif and being active in the OT era. I’m fond of the other fics, but I think this is my favorite one—it’s the one about the dynamic between Leia, Cassian, and Alderaanian/space Spanish.
