Introduction: How To Read The Labels On Your Skincare Products
Have you ever looked at the back of your skincare products and wondered what all the gibberish is all about? I'm here to explain how you can read even the most confusing ingredient lists!
Tumblr media
Luckily, ingredient lists are relatively easy to comprehend thanks to European and American standards. They should all follow the INCI naming process - standing for "International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients".
As a rule of thumb, ingredients will be listed from the highest to the lowest percentage. For example, if you see "Water" or "Aqua" listed as the very first ingredient we can assume the product is made up of mostly water.
The list will then continue with its components most to least until it reaches the allergens, which should always be listed at the very end for easy identification. These allergens could be chemicals such as Limonene, Linalool, or Parfum/Fragrance. It is legally required that a product lists its potential allergens to avoid causing allergic reactions.
The middle-most part of the list will include most of the composition of the product: preservatives (e.g. Phenoxyethanol, Parabens, Benzyl Alcohol, Urea) for keeping the product from spoiling or growing bacteria, emollients (e.g. Dimethicone, Petrolatum, Shea Butter) that moisturise and protect the skin, humectants (e.g. Glycerin, Lactic Acid, Hyaluronic Acid) that draw moisture from the air to give the skin moisture, there may also be thickeners (e.g. Stearyl Alcohol, Xantham Gum) which do as described - thicken the product.
Be aware, though, that products with a percentage of ≤1% can appear anywhere in the ingredients list.
Tumblr media
Next are the little symbols you may see floating around the back of the product bottles. These symbols can make little to no sense to the average person, but I can show you how much sense they actually make!
Tumblr media
This pot symbol represents the Period After Opening (or PAO). It should have a number and an 'M', which stands for months, inside the lower portion of the pot. This means how long the product will keep until the contents start to deteriorate - meaning after this date it should be thrown out. A product can keep anywhere between 1 month to 36 months, although you are more likely to see a product last anywhere between 6 months to a whole year. If you struggle to remember when you have opened a product I would suggest writing the month you opened your skincare in Sharpie onto the back.
Tumblr media
This stands for the best before date, representing an hourglass. This symbol will take the place of a PAO if a product lasts less than 30 months. European products must include either a PAO or BBE, however, this is not required in America. If unsure, it is best to throw out any products looking worse for wear, dried up, or have separated. You can always have a look at other similar products and their BBEs to determine how long to keep them.
Tumblr media
The "Refer to Insert" symbol. Products such as nail polishes, mascaras, and hand creams that may be too small to include an ingredient list will use this symbol. It can either mean to refer to a paper booklet included with the product, to peel back the label, or to refer to a separate online list. It is required that companies include some way for the consumer to find the ingredients on their products.
Tumblr media
Stands for "nominal net content". This tells you the exact weight of the contents of the product at the time of production. This can be in grams (g), ounces (oz), millilitres (ml), litres (L), or liquid ounces (fl oz).
Tumblr media
The Mobius Loop usually stands for the recyclability of the product. It doesn't always mean the product is recyclable, as variations of the symbol can tell you what type of recycling it fits with, such as plastic or cardboard. Some products may require a designated waste service to recycle, and others may not be accepted at all. It is best to check with your local county to determine whether they will accept certain containers.
Tumblr media
The green dot symbol is a little badge that means they pay a recycling and waste service to treat any waste they incur producing the product. It is only used in Europe.
Tumblr media
A certification used to show what percentage of the product is organic or natural. There are two types: Ecocert Organic - which stipulates that 95% or more of the product is organic, and Ecocert Natural - which indicates at least 50% or more of the plant-based ingredients are of organic nature.
Tumblr media
This is the Leaping Bunny Logo, which is a cruelty-free stamp. It means that animal testing was not used in the creation of the product. It does not mean that animal-derived products aren't used in the product itself, and not all vegan-friendly products are cruelty-free.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you keep all of this information in mind, it should become easier to read the contents of your skincare bottles.
However, if you still find yourself struggling to comprehend the more innocuous lists of ingredients there are a few things you can try. I use sites such as Cosmily's ingredient checker to help me understand what chemicals are in my everyday skincare. It's as simple as copying the list and entering it into the checker.
There is also the INCIbeauty app, which may be a bit more helpful than Cosmily - especially if you are on the go. The app lets you scan the barcode of any given product and, if it is in the database, it will give you the lowdown on the ingredients, allergens, and a basic score of how safe the product is. So give it a go!
#PRAIbeautygiftedme I don't mean to Prai, but do you have wrinkles on your neck? If the answer is yes, you should probably keep reading. @praibeauty delivers sophisticated skincare for areas which are often neglected. They say you can tell a woman's true age by looking at her neck. The skin around your neck is thinner than other parts of your body, which causes the area to age more rapidly. The PRAI Beauty Ageless Throat & Decolletage Crème offers a day and night solution for unsightly wrinkles, fine lines, loss of firmness, and sagging. The set promotes elasticity, boosts collagen, and smooths away imperfections. The day cream and night cream are nearly the same in terms of texture and formula. The only exception is that the night cream also contains Retinol. They both have a light fragrance which is slightly floral and fruity. What I hope to achieve by introducing these creams into my routine is to gain a little more definition and smoothness in my neck. I'm using them along with my Gua Sha and light therapy wand. After using the cream for about a week I noticed that that skin on my neck feels firmer, and tighter to the touch. A little goes a long way with these creams. It only takes about a dime sized scoop to get the job done. Based on my brief experience with the product, I have no doubts that I'll see a transformation in the appearance of lines and wrinkles after a few more weeks. I've arrived at this prediction since the creams have already begun performing so well in such a short time. I generally have a very positive opinion of Prai, as I've tried several of their products in the past. They've worked well for me. Our skin's potential hydrogen level is at 4.5-5.5, slightly acidic and it is important to keep at this level for skin's barrier function, moisture retention, and microorganism environment. If it gets too alkaline, it will go to 9 and above which result in dryness and irritation. All combination of oil, pores, breakout, dryness, irritation, acne-causing bacteria, propionibacterium acne has to be adjusted with the right pH level. Balance out first and you will be glowing and shining ☺️🌟 #phbalanced #phbalancedskincare #potentialhydrogen #skincare #skincareroutine #acnebacteria #acnescars #acneproblems #acneskincare #acnefree #skincaretips #deepcleaning #balancingout #balancedskin #balancedskincare #balancedskinbeauty #takecareofyourskin❤️ (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnSWgCZvzAe/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Top 10 Common Ingredients Found In Skincare and What They Mean
★ Mineral Oil - Used as an occlusive moisturizer. This means it forms a barrier on the skin which helps to trap moisture next to the skin, preventing water loss and drying out. It is created through a process called distillation, usually derived from petroleum. Products such as petroleum jelly, Aquaphor, and Vaseline use this and combine it with waxes, which is what makes it so good for locking in moisture for dry lips. Mineral oil is great for those with dry skin, as its humectant properties provide a protective, hydrating barrier on the skin. It is considered non-comedogenic (doesn't cause breakouts), however, it is not recommended for those with acne-prone skin.
★ Phenoxyethanol - Used as a preservative. A preservative prevents the product it is used in from deteriorating through bacterial growth. It is a type of alcohol that is found naturally in the world, however, it is usually formed for use in cosmetics by synthesizing in a laboratory. It has mainly become popular as an alternative to the widely-contested parabens. Phenoxyethanol is a well-rounded, unreactive chemical - however it is not recommended for those with senstive, reactive, or eczemic skin.
★ Shea Butter - Used as an emollient. Emollients are like occlusive moisturizers, except they tend to be lighter on the skin and focus on leaving a softer, silkier finish. Because of this, shea butter is perfect for alleviating dry and itchy skin - and can be a godsend for those who suffer from eczema, psoriasis, dry, or sensitive skin. It also has healing, anti-aging, and UV protection properties. Shea butter comes from the nut of the shea tree, which grows in the arid savannahs of Africa. It contains fatty acids such as palmitic, stearic, and oleic acid which is what makes it so moisturizing. Due to the fatty acids and thick consistency of shea butter, it is not recommended for oily skin and is known to be malassezia feeding (exacerbates fungal acne).
★ Sulfates - Usually used as emulsifiers and surfactants. Emulsifiers exist to prevent the ingredients in cosmetics from separating, keeping them together. Surfactants are very important in products such as shampoos and conditioners because they allow for cleansing, foaming, and penetration of the product into the hair. It also has other properties such as being antimicrobial and able to penetrate both oil and water. There are many key sulfates used in products: sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) are the two most common. SLS is best suited to scalps prone to oil, whilst SLES is best for normal-to-dry scalps as it is less abrasive. However, if you suffer from a sensitive scalp it is wise to go with sulfate-free products as they can exacerbate problems such as itchiness, dandruff, and other skin conditions.
★ Talc (Talcum) - Used to absorb moisture, prevent caking, improve the feel of makeup, and dilute pigment. This may explain why you see talc listed as an ingredient in things like eyeshadows and blushers. It is completely organic, deriving from clay minerals. A lot of controversy surrounds talc due to multiple lawsuits against the company Johnson & Johnson after multiple women and families sued for damages over developing reproductive cancer and passing away. Groups such as Cancer Research UK and the American Cancer Society have admitted that some studies on the links between talcum and cancer have found a link, whilst others have not so it is undetermined whether talcum powder causes cancer. It is advised by many countries not to use talcum powder in and around the genital area, or inhale the substance. Apart from this, talc is suitable for most all skin types, though could cause irritation on those with sensitive skin.
★ Mica - Like Talc but safer - Used in makeup products such as lipstick, eyeshadow, bronzer, and blush to provide a glittery effect. Mica is almost purely cosmetic in purpose. It is a natural way of giving shimmer. It may be combined with other compounds such as titanium dioxide to create different colours, which is why you may see it alongside the "MAY CONTAIN" section of product ingredients. The only downsides to mica are the ethical and labour issues surrounding its production; Inhalation during the manufacturing process is harmful to production teams, and the mining of mica in some countries has caused child labour concerns.
★ Glycerin - Used as a humectant - also written as glycerol or glycerine. Glycerin is perfect for use in creams and cleansers because it moisturises, smoothes, repairs, and draws in moisture from the air and deep into the skin. It is a compound that occurs naturally in our bodies - usually obtained for use in cosmetics via plant or animal sources. It is perfect for those with dry skin, being very unlikely to cause allergic reactions unless specifically allergic.
★ Alcohol Denat - Used in the formulation of skincare, as a drying agent, and as a preservative. Denatured Alcohol doesn't really have any positive properties by it. It is used solely to help make up the product it is contained in; it helps the product spread better, absorb quicker, help other ingredients penetrate better, and removes oils from the skin. It can be useful if you suffer from oily skin, however it is incredibly drying and prone to cause irritation.
★ Hyaluronic Acid (HA) - Used as a humectant - has become rather popular recently, and for good reason. It plays an important role in the skin by repairing tissue, and is what contributes to the skins elasticity. Its positive traits are: moisturising, softening, anti-aging, free-radical protecting (protects from unstable atoms caused by bodily processes or by exposure to air pollutants and other harmful chemicals (which can cause cancer)), and healing. It is the perfect miracle chemical for those suffering from dry, tired skin as it locks in tonnes of water and firms up any fine lines. Hyaluronic acid is safe for all skin types, nonetheless those with preexisting skin concerns should patch test just in case.
★ Vitamin C - powerful antioxidant - also known as ascorbic acid. You probably know this vitamin as the healthy substance found in citrus fruits such as lemons and oranges. It is a required substance in our immune system, contributing to the function of enzymes, the repairing of tissue the formation of collagen (the stuff that gives skin its elasticity), and the production of neurotransmitters. Antioxidants are helpful in the protection of the body from the build up of free radicals that can cause ailments such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Vitamin C is soothing, anti-aging, and UV protecting. It is mainly used to lighten hyperpigmentation and discolouration of the skin as it aids in blocking the pathway of pigment synthesis. It isn't recommended for oily skin as the product itself usually contains oily substances which can exacerbate oil build up on the skin. Also, it is advised not to combine vitamin C with other acids as it can lead to serious skin irritation.
