Hi! I saw an almost all black (women’s) kimono look one day and promptly fell head over heels for it. It looked like it was worn as a fashion choice. I know that black kimonos are usually reserved as mourning garb but is it okay if I decide to wear it outside of mourning? I was planning to make a solid black yukata.

Hello! Thanks for the question!This question falls under the “how formal do you want your kimono kitsuke to be” category, I think.

There are really two major schools/branches of kimono these days, like so many other Japanese crafts (like sushi!). There’s the Formal (c), Correct (TM), Traditional (c) way of wearing kimono, that is proper and serious for things like tea ceremony, coming-of-age ceremony, 7-5-3 Festival, formal family portraits and kimono school.

And of course there’s the modern fashion branch of kimono (just like a California Roll) that’s just as valid, it’s just modern, creative and completely understood to be worn as a fashion choice. 

One really quick way you can signal that your all-black yukata (and black is a very valid yukata choice, see here: https://lifulu.shop-pro.jp/?pid=78345074&view=smartphone) is for fashion is in the treatment of the accessories. Fluffy,  fashionable obi, a hat, hair accessories, purse, jewelry, all will show that of course you know all-black is uncommon and you’re OWNING IT.

It’s absolutely stunning, goth and looks fresh as hell! 

As you can see, it’s absolutely acceptable as high fashion (or High Fashion, if you will), so have confidence and show that you know precisely what you’re doing and subverting it with grace and purpose. :)

White dust which flys with a single step. A click is heard and a door ascends from the ground as if a hidden mechanism summoned it. It appears to look like a dark stone tablet only with a small doorknob attached. Clasping the knob, the door lights up words that cannot be deciphered at the moment. It vanishes and another click is heard. The door opens with ease as a slight warmth draws one inside.

Black waters, with enough visibility to see the bare feet underneath. A room where a small square hole is visible way high above, with the moonlight shining through. It highlights some dust particles within the room, though not much else can be seen. It’s a large room that can reflect echoes within and sounds last for several minutes. Splash splash, walking towards the hole. Slight sticking with each step, as if something slimy tries to take hold. One looks as if a pale white apparition, dull though a large contrast to the black waters at foot. Mind blank on what is occurring, no thoughts comes as if drawn by instinct to go towards the light. A hand reaches and black tears fall back into the water.

You are an innovator full of ideas and charm. A calm demeanor that seems to bask in the thoughts of quiet thunderstorms and rain falling. Sometimes you feel as though there is more to explore, whilst comfortable where you are. Though when you do it is as if in a trance, exploring areas that you may or may not have ever been to before. Once it’s done, you are more aware again and ready to take on the world. You are very methodical in your works and take great pride in what you accomplish. Your longing for new knowledge never stops and sometimes you drown yourself for hours on end with books, notes, music, anything related to the topic. Do note that if you want to explore more about what’s been bothering you, find music that you are most drawn to and immerse yourself within those tones. You might find not only inspiration, but that something will start to click for you as an individual.
