The Duffer Brothers Didn’t Forget Will’s Birthday + the Hints Everyone Missed Hiding in Plain Sight:

I encourage you to also check out this post I did a while back. It goes into some other evidence that debunks this whole fiasco even further.

The most obvious hint that was hidden in season 4 itself, is the last scene from this clip, aka the Duffer Brothers acknowledgement of Dustin’s birthday, down to the month, day, and hour.

The timeline for 4x06, which is when the Cali gang arrives at Suzie’s, is March 25th, 1986.

Dustin’s birthday, is May 29th, 1971.

Which means that Suzie’s comment about Dustin’s birthday being: 2 months, 3 days and 5 hrs away was... spot on (we don’t know what time Dustin was born, and so that’s why it varies slightly off between days and hours here).

This means the Duffers went out of their way to look on their Character Birthday/Important Dates Calendar (which 100% exists, like be serious this is the Duffer Brothers for gods sake), and did the math to calculate exactly how long it would be until Dustin’s birthday according to the present timeline they were in, just so they could throw in this line.

And you expect me to believe they forgot Will's birthday????

Why else do you think they had Mike trail off into thought trying to remember, with Will right behind him, only for Suzie to interrupt, giving an exact countdown before Mike could give it much thought?

I’m also convinced Eden barging in at the last second was meant to ironically symbolize the Duffers themselves ‘barging in’ to stop the conversation from going any further, before Suzie caused Mike, or worse, the audience, to figure things out before the events of s5.

It’s important to note that Dustin’s birthday wasn’t even mentioned in the show ever. It was only mentioned in promotion over the years, separate from canon. Which is a serious contrast to Will, who is one of the only characters to have their birthday mentioned on the show, in canon!

So why, go through all this trouble of tracking down Dustin's birthday, a birthday that's never been mentioned in the show, if they're apparently not paying attention to that sort of thing?

What makes this even more interesting, is that if they are actually fully aware of their character’s birthdays, then they know Mike’s birthday is April 7th… which means if s5 picks up roughly where s4 left off (March 29th), then Mike’s birthday is just around the corner…

Idk... It's all just a little too perfect to be a coincidence.

i'm literally sitting here trying to figure out what EVEN i can SAY about aspec rayllum here? i think about them and i want to combust into heart emojis. i watched the first season when it first came out and then only happened to catch up last year with my qpp, and in between i was like. so infuriated when i found out they'd made rayla and callum a thing bc i - naturally - latched onto the green and purple character as an aroace icon at 18 years old, and my partner was like "no no no no TRUST me you've got to watch it, you'll love it"

they weren't wrong and after bingeing the whole show i'm stuck thinking about rayllum a LOT. they're written so much like my own ideal relationship that i kind of want to explode from it sometimes. anyway, my absolute favorite thing about them is how much emphasis there is about their friendship - to the point that when i watched season four, I can't remember which episode specifically it was number wise but when rayla suggested splitting up and offered to go with callum and he turns her down, my first immediate heartbroken thought was "she misses her best friend..." i just love how they're in love but they're in love cos they're best friends....11/10 no notes i need more relationships like that in media

ANYWAY long rambley ask about my loves aside, my question is what are some of your favorite moments where rayllum are so clearly best friends/goofballs in love?

No like honest to god though — me and the Rayla to my Callum are also in a QPR + dash of romance relationship and like... arc 1 and arc 2 Rayllum are just so goddamn sweet??

I don't agree generally that arc 2 Rayllum is more Mature™ than arc 1 rayllum — Callum is more patient and Rayla is more open, so they've matured as individuals — but merely just that they're different flavours of aspec-ness. Like arc 1 is the craziness and rollercoaster of meeting a stranger and realizing they're Your Person, and arc 2 is the deepness after the fact of "I know you, and I know that we can get through everyone so long as we have each other" mostly cause I think the main reason people label arc 1 Rayllum as more immature is because s3 Rayllum gushes over each other, but that's bc people have a hard time conceptualizing having deep admiration for your partner(s) that isn't infatuation... even though like? It's totally normal and welcome, like any long term relationship is "my partner is the most amazing person ever and i'm also very aware of all their flaws simultaneously" and like, arc 1 Rayllum hits that balance perfectly imo

I just love all of their stages and sides to them so so much

But yeah! Some of my fave moments Rayllum wise for the Best Friends quality has to be when they help each other up in 3x05 (Callum after the soulfang chase and Rayla on the ambler) because things are Weird but they're still always going to help each other? The "I missed my best friend" quality in s4 with no one laughing at Callum's jokes / talking about magic with him (vs their first scene in 5x01 being him telling her all about the magic stuff he's reading) and Rayla keeping her disappointment at bay always hits hard and I loove 4x06 when she's beating herself up and he takes care of her because a Good Relationship isn't about how you treat each other when everything's fine, it's 100% about how treat each other when life is hard/stressful and/or you're upset with each other

But I love all the gentle teasing in early S5 and the fist bump lives in my head eternally rent free. The 2x03 hug also means a lot to me cause that was the turning point she went from being a friend to being family and I think in a lot of ways, that's their relationship's most important turning point alongside maybe 1x06 (trusting her anyway!) 4x09 (forgiveness) and 5x04 (her opening up).

5x02 post-inn and stargazing scene are also faves just because of how happy they are talking about Nothing and everything, and like — that's just so fucking real, y'know? When someone makes everything automatically better just by being there

I just rewatched the brio intimate scene in 4x06 and when first watched it i was so annoyed at having a dean scene right in the middle of it that i really didn't think about it (plus i fast-forwarded alot in season 4)..

but now i watched again and fucking dean is riding his bike, he's smiling, he's happy, there's a sense of freedom and lightness.. and then his ankle monitor starts flashing and he's pulled back to the reality of his life, that he's under the secret services control and goddammit if this is not exactly what beth feels at that exact moment with rio!!!

Deans feeling are so easy to read in that scene and they're 100% used to parallel beths feelings. Sure what's going on with beth is a little more complicated she's trying to distract rio, trying to hide the wire, trying not to get caught but she's also free and light and happy with him!!! Ahhh!!!

I was really annoyed when i first watched the scene, i did not give a fuck about dean but now I'm so glad that they edited these two scenes like this especially because i felt like the show didn't do enough with showing beths feelings for rio (it's still not enough but it's something)..

Random thoughts about this scene:

1. Jaren Lewison’s acting here… 100/100, all the reaction shots ending with that last one of Ben feeling super hurt by what he had just heard, chef’s kiss.

2. Margot kinda sucks. She did not know what she was about to lose at that moment. Devi would never throw Ben under the bus like that behind his back. That’s why Devi won Ben over in the end, while Margot remained the reject.

2. Poor Ben just had to nope the heck out of there… and he forgot to take his drink order with him. That girl who was serving the beverages was like “hey what about the drinks?”

Ok but can we talk about the absolute shitty treatment that Teeter gets in 4x06??

I mean, Mia and Laramie have never had one (1) single reason to even exist other than to create drama and reinforce the narrative according to which women cause trouble when you put them among men, as if men were just poor kind souls whose existence gets upset by the evil women (and of course God forbid they are held responsible for their actions/instincts when a woman is around).

Mia and Laramie had no reason AT ALL to stay in the bunkhouse to begin with, but they are not even part of the staff so I can understand them being kicked out.

But fucking Teeter?? She didn't casually park her ass in the bunkhouse, she was regularly HIRED by Rip to work there, she was good at her job, she was forced to wear the brand, she had nice relationships with the other wranglers (hello?? Colby???). And she gets kicked out just because she's a woman?? Regardless of her skills and the fact that she was regularly hired??

(Kudos to Rip for not being an asshole and trying to advocate for Teeter)
