Let me know how you like the single, askance reference approach, I'm experimenting with succinct weird ways to pitch things to the people I think will like them. Links go to my original Letterboxd "review" (comment), and if you click the poster or title there you'll be taken to the short synopsis, cast & crew, wide header image for some vibes, etc.

QEPD.
Terence Davies (1945-2023) was the greatest living British director. He didn't have the commercial success of John Boorman or the festival recognition of Ken Loach. But no other British director portrayed post-war popular culture, the joy of mundane moments and the cruelty of social conventions better than Davies. He privileged the gaze of children and women, but also gave prominence to his hometown, Liverpool. Davies gave voice to his homosexuality as well as his religious faith. He lavished happy and merciless endings alike. He wrote original stories, with great autobiographical overtones, but he was also an effective adapter of novels; not in vain, he filmed two biopics about eminent poets. Terence Davies expanded the horizons of British cinema while making personal and moving films. RIP.

We've lost Terence Davies, until today one of our greatest living filmmakers. A sudden, short illness. He was still working.
Tumblr media
He was only able to make 9 feature films and 5 shorts between 1976 and last month, but all of them are at the very least exceptional, and at best some of the most transcendent and moving in the form.

His 1992 film, The Long Day Closes, is among the greatest of movies. I was lucky to see it first in March, 2017, with the charming and eloquent Davies present to speak before and after (and then to joyously introduce a beloved movie from his childhood, the 1957 Tammy and the Bachelor, starring Debbie Reynolds and Leslie Nielsen, directed by Joseph Pevney). Long Day Closes is available to stream on the Criterion Channel, for those with interest and access.
His final work, "Passing Time," a single landscape shot with music and Davies himself reading his own poem, was released three weeks ago. He still had two features in the pipeline I wish had happened, but he left us with this:

Since I'm almost done working on em here's my demolition lovers costumes so far!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I started this in like mid/late March I believe
This is my first time doing beading ever, I probably should have started with something smaller or even tested on some scrap but I am nothing if not stupidly ambitious.
I wanna say this is roughly 14hours of work so far, I still want to add more to the dress and possibly make some accessories, we will see what I can get done by Saturday lol
