The Forgotten Letros
Tumblr media
OVS, Of Rust and Gold’s first sequel, takes us back to the Escana Empire where the Harver reign faces new struggles when they’re asked to join a war on foreign soil, rebellions against their rule are sparked, and an assassination attempt threatens to tear it all apart. Prince Argus and his ex-pirate lover Leo are finally given the chance to be together, but as the political climate gets hot even they might turn against each other.

When people talk about the world in Of Rust and Gold. The focus centers on the main continent and the Rhine (which is often argued over whether or not they count as being part of it) but Letros is certainly *not*. Its peninsula hangs right over The Mouth, where salt and freshwater meet at the opening of Gegra, and Oskya. As such, Letros has always been a friend to the High Northeastern nations of the continent and has gotten especially close with Oskya. The royal families have intermarried often, they have a good economic relationship, and Letros uses Oskya as the middle man for any affairs they involve themselves in on the continent.
Most people’s opinion of the nation is rather neutral. It’s known to be relatively humble. They don’t boast great riches or a culture that’s appealing to outsiders. Most of what can be said of it has to do with agriculture and animal husbandry, contributions to Santivism (convents and monasteries must outnumber towns), and the amount of open/seemingly untouched space. As such, a lot of people consider Letros to be the most boring place in the world and the thought of mingling with the nation and the royal family is not appealing to anyone not Oskyan (but granted, at this point the Ponsonbys [Oskyan royal family] and the Villumsens [Letrossi royal family] are quite strongly related at this point give a take a few marriages to smaller families from Slovy and Dolyriv).
If not known for how boring they are, the Letrossi are known for their pirates. Surrounded by so much water, even in the icy temperatures near Oskya, the coasts have given way to pirates. Lots of trade passes through the area, especially close to the Mouth where even ships from the Escana Empire would pass through rather than to brave the icebergs closer to Oskya and it has made the area ripe for piracy. Thousands of islands litter the space between the nations, most of which remain uncharted. While Letrossi pirates perhaps aren’t as vicious as others (Letros in general does a good job raising perfectly polite people) they are so large in number an entire sect of the Oskyan navy is dedicated to trying to wipe them out. King Aksel of Letros doesn’t seem too bothered because he spends much of his time masquerading in taverns and gambling houses as a commoner and has met several pirates and thinks most of them can go on committing high sea robbery because Letros isn’t losing all that much money. Although he would never say this openly, and he likely has made deals with several of them.
The language is considered harder to penetrate to most outsiders than the other northern languages. It’s rhythmic with harsh syllables and vowels and a slip of the tongue or a change in tone can mess up a sentence drastically. Some would complain Letrossi speakers spit a lot and they do, all that wagging their tongue around produces a lot of saliva.
As it’s not a country spoken about often, only three notable characters in Of Rust and Gold/The Saints Song series can trace their heritage back to its humble borders. Those three being Mel Dunham, the biracial/black son of pirate Captain Mercy Dunham and Princess Hadley Villumsen, younger sister to King Askel and wife to Prince Aayden of Oskya.
