Tumblr, I propose a battle of wits!
I have put Iocaine powder in one of these two goblets. You choose, then we both drink.

The Princess Bride is such a funny book to read after ONLY seeing the movie. Like Goldman made up a fake author from a fake country and proceeded to write the book as an abridged version of what the fake author wrote... and then he proceeds to add in notes to the "abridged version" mentioning all the boring world building stuff he skipped because it was boring.
Like shout out to William Goldman, man really did make an entire book that is just "the cool scenes you thought of in your head" and then made up a fake author to abridge so he doesn't have to connect them.
And it slaps

I've seen these five films sweep COUNTLESS themed polls, so guess what?
No "other" option. You have to pick one. Good luck.

So I’ve never actually watched The Princess Bride with closed captioning. All the copies I own/have owned didn’t come with that option. Well, it’s on Disney+ now, and it DOES have captions. I decided to watch it tonight because apparently half of my coworkers haven’t seen it and that made me sad.
AND WHEN I TELL YOU I WAS APPARENTLY MISSING THINGS-
I now know ALL of Fezzik’s rhymes from the boat.
I know exactly what fighting moves Westly and Inigo were saying in that EPIC fight.
I can understand what Fezzik is saying when they break into the castle (I love Andre the Giant, but his accent is so hard for me to decipher)
AND
Apparently I have missed something in the twenty years I’ve been watching this movie. When Inigo is drunk in the Thieves’ Forest, a member of the Brute Squad comes around the corner of the building after Inigo proclaims this is where [he’ll] stay, that he will not be moved.
“Ho, there!” he says.
Now. I always assumed Inigo just repeated the man’s phrase.
Oh no. The closed captions read as follows:
“I do not budge. Keep your Joder.”
Because he’s a Spaniard, in the movie it is pronounced exactly like “Ho, there.”
THAT. IS. NOT. WHAT. THAT. MEANS.
Joder means fuck in Spanish.
So when the guy comes around the corner, I can only assume Inigo’s sloshed brain just heard him shout “fuck” at him, and THAT is how he responded.
NO ONE I KNOW realized this for nearly FORTY YEARS!!!!!
Closed captioning, y’all. It’s not just because you can’t make out what they’re saying. It’s also for recognizing jokes people were slipping into movies and past censors from before you were born.

Would Wesley (The Princess Bride) survive? I think yes, but it's going to get ugly.
So I just said True Love is not the Get Out Of Castle Dracula Free card you might hope it is -
And then you send me The Guy whose whole deal is Death Cannot Stop True Love. You did that on purpose didn't you.
(Technically Jonathan Harker is also a Death Cannot Stop True Love kinda guy, but whereas Wesley simply refuses to die, Jonathan is going to refuse to stay down, if it comes to that)
Wesley knows how to appease the whims of a guy who will most likely kill him in the morning. Wesley has proven he can climb Cliffs of Despair. Wesley is a polite boy who says "please." Wesley would make it out alive then tell everyone his name is Count Dracula.
You got me. You got me. Death cannot stop True Love, and Wesley farmboy pirate man in black can survive Castle Dracula.

You want to know why Inigo Montoya remains such an iconic and beloved character even 35 years after the Princess Bride came out?
It's because he's one of the few characters in fiction who has a story where he has dedicated his life to revenge, his whole motivation is about getting revenge....and he gets it! and then he isn't empty or despairing! he doesn't regret it! he's totally satisfied!
because so many stories about revenge or rage are about characters "seeing the futility of their actions" or learning "their desire for revenge has only made them the monsters they hated" FUCK THAT.
Inigo Montoya kills the man who kills his father, is allowed to live in the narrative after and be happy about it and it is so satisfying. it's fantastic. it's iconic.
let more characters rage against the world, bring it down with bloodied hands, and let them be FUCKING RIGHT about it. Let them celebrate their success with sharp grins, and let them live happy, full lives where they always remain proud/fulfilled for what they've done
