My dear friend, thank you for sending me this incredible babygirl material. As thanks, have Obi whenever he's unbanned from Monstro Lounge and Crowley stubs a toe. It's a very rare scenario, but it happens.

The Murderbot Diaries Summary:
In a corporate-dominated space-faring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. For their own safety, exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids. But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern. On a distant planet, a team of scientists is conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid--a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.” Scornful of humans, Murderbot wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is, but when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and Murderbot to get to the truth.

I don't normally go about praising books, but I just finished the last book in the Covenant of Steel trilogy by Anthony Ryan and oh my god. These books, this story, has been one of the best things I've read in such a long time. The writing is wonderful, as is the world he crafted. The characters are believable (with all ranges of people represented!! Including poc and queer people!!) and it is not smutty at all (there is only two scenes in which there is some sex, but the description is more fade-to-black, which I appreciated immensely). There is a lot of thematic ties to the idea of martyrdom and the power of religion as a source both of corruption and comfort. And the battles, knights, and fighting techniques... *chef's kiss* There's also just enough magic involved that it can be called fantasy, but it's done is a very interesting way.
So 10/10, definitely check them out if you're looking for something to read. I can't say they're for everyone, but I know some people here who would enjoy it.

One of my running bits is that when the name of a book appears in a book I'm reading, I take a picture of me pointing at it and then send it to my wife.
This most frequently happens with Pale as it is fucking Long and ongoing and the title is a relatively common word. BUT it does help facilitate shit like this.

Yeah, that's right. I'm fucking hilarious.

Maybe Star started out as a total stick even spindlier then he is now and he and knockout when though some special weight treatments to get him his curvy thighs but lately he’s starting to become even more pear shaped
Interesting. I like the idea of KO administering some treatments for Scream's own good--and perhaps getting a private kick out of seeing him fill out.
...even or especially if KO can't figure out why he's still gaining after the treatment's over.

Over the years, I've seen varying theories about why Ben spared Arnold's life (aside from the obvious "gotta keep him in the plot" armor), so I would like to give my two cents -- AKA yet again, I would like to meta about something that absolutely nobody asked for.
For Ben, it's pretty plain early on that friends and family are at the pinnacle of what he's fighting for (he did, after all, risk many lives in S1 to rescue his father rather than thinking about the greater good). With that in mind, when we flash forward to S2 and Ben and Arnold have their first official conversation, Arnold immediately wins Ben over in a very simple way: he commends his brother, Samuel, on his valor and being a "fine soldier." Ben's face when Arnold speaks of Samuel makes that plain:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As someone who is arguably still grieving, and tamping down said grief for the sake of his duty, you can see in his eyes all the heartache and appreciation, and even relief to hear that someone out there actually acknowledges the sacrifice his brother made for the Cause. Here is someone who finally understands the idolized view he has of Samuel in his head, and there's a comfort in that affirmation that none of his superiors have given him thus far. In other words, by uttering what Ben needed to hear, Arnold gained an immediate ally.
IMO, S3 did a great job of showcasing how those you trust and revere can be just as twisted as the supposed enemy. The best examples for Ben are Reverend Worthington, who was a r.eligious figure just like his beloved and trusted father, and then, of course, Arnold's betrayal.
Tumblr media
When we get to their showdown in 3x9, Ben is immediately faced with a choice: he can either k.ill Arnold for his treason, or he can spare his life. And just like with most of his decisions, it all boils down to friends and family. Arnold is one of his only remaining links to Samuel. In Ben's mind, how can he possibly take out the one person in camp who'd known Samuel to be as brave and heroic as he did? By k.illing Arnold, he'd be removing the only superior who'd known and appreciated Samuel, and thus, he'd also be snuffing out a part of his brother's legacy.
Ironically, one of Arnold's initial quotes to Ben was, "We do what is right. Then we live with the consequences." Arguably, sparing Arnold was right for Ben and only Ben, and he would eventually have to live with that decision (and thankfully that didn't turn out too badly).
tl;dr ~ Ben didn't spare Arnold for Arnold's sake or any last minute compassion; Ben let Arnold live so that Samuel could live on by proxy.

So The other Night I listened to the Traitor again.
Tumblr media
Omfg I just need to rant somewhere. I might do this a bit more often on here as Sometimes I just need to ramble on Big Finish that makes me happy.
So as mentioned a while ago I’ve been re-listening to Dark Eyes as I’m slowly showing it to a friend. (They ended up liking Molly btw) and we listened to the Traitor the other day. I honestly love this story more each time I hear it, the main stuff with the Dalek’s here is just rinse and repeat from other Briggs scripts but that’s not what is really important here… it’s just Backdrop for what is
Nicola Walker as Liv Chenka, Liv had previously made an appearance with the seventh doctor and don’t get me wrong, she’s a likeable and well developed companion surrogate in Robophobia but this is her proper Introduction as a companion and it’s one of the best ever. Throughout the entire story she stands out as such a strong voice against the Doctor, the Daleks and the resistance, her moral but agresiva character shines through so strong. She’s brave/stubborn as hell basically telling Daleks to fuck off and listen to her and saying “what more can the do, Kill me? So what” but when push comes to shove she very clearly doesn’t want to die, upon their capture at the end and meeting the time controller she says as much with her voice shaking, throughout the whole story she’s been advocating to not sacrifice anyone to stop the Daleks but in the last moments when she thinks it’s all over for her despite her fear she snaps and gives a beautifully wilful heartbreaking speech.
She changes her mind stating that stopping them is more important in the long run (Prompting The Doctor to state that it can’t be a Numbers Game, similar to his sentiment at the end of Dark eyes 1 when it was sacrifice molly & stop the Daleks or save her and them, it’s wonderful build up for 8’s &War’s Dilemma in the time war) and after living under their occupation she doesn’t care about what other threat is out there so long as they can stop the Daleks. It’s one of the best moments of her character and perfectly sets up the kind of person she is. The entire end sequence is gold, from Liv, to the Dilemma, to mcganns performance as the doctor is pushed into the corner. Plus the Dalek Time controller just being a wonderfully written and portrayed character despite being a dalek (something to be show can’t do properly seemingly) Liv could not have had a better introduction story to the EDA’s
Tumblr media
Only other note: it’s kind of odd how the Daleks now just go from DE untill 4.2, like this episode set up a lot, from the doctor needing them to stop the eminence making it seem like they were gonna end up fighting one another, with the eminence fleet approaching the system. To the Planetary súper-weapon set up in the story that you’d think would come up again. But nope in 2.4 the Daleks leave Nyxces 7 and the doctor and don’t show up again until after the Eminence is gone and it’s very odd. I don’t mind too much though as whilst I love the Daleks they can get tiring especially after 5 straight Daleks stories (7 if you count the previous EDA’s) my friend even said they were glad to hear that they were gone for now as it had started to feel repetitive. Something this episode even seems to comment on with the Daleks constantly falling into the same old pitfalls over and over.

She Who Became The Sun Duology Summary:
Zhu Chongba is given a fate of greatness, which sounds great right up into he starves to death. But if there’s a great fate to be had seems a waste to let it die too so his sister will just have to fulfill it. A reimagining of the Ming Dynasty’s rise to power that has the gumption to ask ‘is it a woman’s body if a woman doesn’t inhabit it?’

The Traitor Review - The Suffering of Scribes
The Traitor Review - The Suffering of Scribes
Tumblr media
The Traitor, the last installment of Anthony Ryan’s The Covenant of Steel, staked me through the heart. The ending of the previous book, The Martyr, left little doubt that the events of Alwyn Scribe’s life would be entering the heartbreak section of the trilogy when it ended with not only Alwyn sleeping with Evadine covered …
