I have like bare minim business knowledge but reading all this stuff about how the watcher boys themselves have said that it's hard to stay profitable with all the expenses they have. I have to wonder if making their own streaming platform, not website or site a streaming platform is profitable?
like the amount of money it cost just to keep the streaming platform running seems like a step in the opposite direction. Maybe they should've done literally anything else, like promote their patreon every episode they upload, actually post stuff on there (I don't have it but from what I heard it's "just" the discord serve) that is exclusive to patreon like BTS of puppet history, extra material.of ghost files, special episodes of mystery files, things that actually make people want to pay and then they should've gradually switched to a streaming service. Give their viewers time to follow them and not yk ask them to pay 6$ for 4 videos a month.
just my two cents

well that was fast, but i feel like i’m being guilt tripped for feeling disappointed—i might be the only one but still— and now they changed it so it will release first on their platform and a month later in youtube for free
the mention of their employees is what i find most guilt tripping like i was the one to hire them and take away their pay even though this could have all been avoided if they did a poll or asked an expert. i feel like downsizing could have helped as well

The difference between Dropout and The Watcher is A. Dropout is actually offering a service that is just not possible on YouTube. Their sets and guests make sense for a company their size but like you couldn’t produce Game Changers on a YouTube budget. Also the content would probably be censored to make ad revenue on YouTube.
The Watcher can 100% be made on a YouTube budget. Unless finances are being grossly mishandled. They should be able to make the content they are making.
B. Dropout is all shows made by the same company, like Disney plus, but unlike Disney it’s very clear that this LARGE group of creative and talented people are essentially given the tools to create their dream projects. That’s an amazing thing and it shows in the quality of the work. Dude I don’t care about three random men that much.
C. Dropout filled a niche. Watcher content was good because of the YouTube limitations not despite of it. Dropout provided comedy content that just couldn’t exist on a free platform anymore and no other place was doing. If I wanted ‘TV show’ level production of any of the Watcher content I could find it… for free. (Think any ghost hunting show, Guys Drive in and Dives, any true crime show)

In light of recent events I think it would be best to put my podcast on my new, never before seen, podcast streaming service.
Despite only posting twice a month I think this would be best for business.
It’s only 6.99 a month so I think all my audience of college kids and highschoolers should be able to afford it.
Go subscribe! ( I’m so good at this business thing)

The Watcher guys framing the situation as if us fans have asked for it feels like the equivalent to a man rubbing at your thigh , saying “you like that?!” cause he cannot finding the cl*t.

I wonder how he'd react if Martin died in front of him. He seems like the Gunpowder tim rage type to me.

Even if they backtracked, I wonder how many fans they permanently lost because of this. I feel the same way, like now there's a bad taste in my mouth with them. They lost some of my respect. Idk. I kind of don't feel like watching them anymore.

tbh hate the watcher situation but seeing it trending over Taylor fucking Swift's new album is great to see.
Visual representation of the current "trending" situation on here:

What frustrates me most with the Watcher response is that it completely misses the point that people were also trying to say that we don’t watch Watcher because of fancy effects. We watch it because we like Shane and Ryan’s personalities. This is a lukewarm apology, fair enough and good enough, but it’s so frustrating that they missed the point.

the thing i don't understand about the watcher situation is people saying that artists need to be paid for their work , which is generally true BUT let's just not pretend that they haven't made more money that i will probably ever seen in my life

the backlash to the watcher announcement is probably the first time I've seen a popular creator ask for support and their audience go "FUCK NO KEEP DOING THE THING WE WANT YOU TO DO FOREVER!!!!" like its okay that you dont want to pay another $6/month but it's wild how they just completely ignore the watcher's goals completely. and that isnt even touching on the racism directed towards steven lim and the uwu-ification of shane.

I think the thing that’s leaving a bad taste in my mouth about Watcher is I always felt like a fan, like part of the joke, now I feel like a dollar amount.
I still love the boys, (I don’t have an opinion on Steven, never knew him aside from his bartending on Too Many Spirits) I just feel disappointed. Like your uncles suddenly saying they won’t visit anymore unless you pay them, and you would because you love them, but didn’t they want to see you in the first place? Didn’t you used to be enough?
