Summary :  Kate isn’t that bad, she just left a first bad impression though, but Miles isn’t really fond of her.
A/N : Part 2 is here lolol
Tumblr media
Your Pov
I was reading my book when I heard continuous bouncing of ball and I know, I surely know that it was Miles, so I went downstairs stop all this noise when Kate scolded him first.
“Stop it!” Kate shouted “Thank you” she said as she went back to what she’s working.
“Pfft” I let out a muffled laugh, Miles looked at me and rolled his eyes “weirdo” he mumbled, he then threw his last ball at the wall and walked away annoyed.
{T I M E  S K I P}
I went out of my room to find something that can entertain me in this boring house, as I walk around the hallways, I saw Kate following something, and you know for sure i follow her, after a moment of following her she turn her back to check and i hurriedly hid behind a corner
“The heck is she roaming around for?” I whispered, she then opens a door and I heard a faint song which seems to be a crappy one from the room “Ohhh miles’ room”
She enters the room like she had seen a ghost or something, “Miles?” she said ,I follow her but I stayed outside the room.
his room is messy as hell, I thought. “Don’t you know how to knock?” he annoyingly answered.
“Do you have... a friend in here?” she asked “what do you want” way to go spoiled brat, i thought as he didn’t even answer Kate’s question, “I thought..” she roams his room “I saw someone go in here..”.
This is getting really uncomfortable for me so- “Kate! Flora said she needs you!” I shouted, “Coming!” she answered, she dashes out the room. “Have you been there the whole time?”
“Oh, no just got here” he rolls his eyes “Get out-”
“WAIT!” I said before he closes the door “Wanna go horse racing?” I ask “NO” aaaand he closes his door, damn-
“awww, why? does cute little baby Miles don’t know how to race with horses anymore?”
“Who says I don’t?” he opens his door, leaning on the door frame.
[ T I M E  S K I P}
“Can I come too pleaaase?” flora begged “Come on Miles flora wants to see me win you know?” I laugh, “Ugh fine-”.
“Can Kate come too? please please?”
“N-” “Of course Kate can come, lets go!” I cut him off lol.
We arrive at a track field we used to race horses with and theres a part at the field where you enter a hallway of tall bush of roses, Today I’m going to be riding Delila since she is the only horse left with Samson ofc.
{THIS KIND OF ENTRANCE, just imagine two of these paths}
Tumblr media
“Go! Miles, Go Y/N!” flora exclaimed “Guys don’t get rough with each other ok? its just a game” Kate reminded, “Of course Kate we’ll REMEMBER that” I answered.
“3!” Flora starts the count down.
“2!”
“1!”
“GO, GO, GO!” flora shouted, we raced each other since the time quint taught us how to ride horses, sometimes me and miles would get a tie,but I hope we won’t get a tie and I would win this,
“Your getting slower Fairchild!” I shouted,
“Shut up L/N!” he shouted back,
We took a rough turn and he passes by me, later on we arrive at the roses path, I took the right tunnel of roses, while miles took the left one, we can still apparently see each other through the walls
“This is looks prettier than the last time I saw this” I said as I look up, which i don’t prescribe to do because-.
“Yah!” I said as the horse launches me to the ground,
“Delila calm down!” delila was loudly neighing and jumping, she looks like she’s seen a ghost lol, like Kate,
“Delil-” as I try to approach her she jumps and runs away “Delila wait!” I run after her.
Narrator’s Pov
Her heart thudded in her chest. Her hands shook. Her feet tingled. As she puts her hands on her knees hyperventilating,
“hah, hah, hah” Y/N ran out of energy to run,
“d-delila”, she sits down on the dirt path calming herself down.
“The way back takes too long and the way to the finish line takes way more long, hah, hah” she struggles talking
“How am I going to get back then?” she needs to think of a way to get back dusk
“Shit- its almost night!” she says as she stomps on the dirt path.
Miles Pov
I arrive at the path of roses, I took the left turn because its the nearest one to the finish line, “ This is looks prettier than the last time I saw this “, damn it is, Mrs. Grose has been watering these everyday, I thought.
After minutes and minutes of tricks and turns I eventually reached the end of the path, “Miles is here! LOOK! he’s the first one to arrive!” Flora excitedly shouted.
“Congratulations miles” Kate said walking to me,
“Woah miles you won!” flora hugs me “damn right i did” I smile
“Wheres Y/N though?” Kate asked “I guess she”s still stuck at the roses part” I chuckled, Kate frowned, “I’ll wait for her here, you guys can go” she ordered “come on flora” and we flee.
{T I M E  S K I P}
Its been at least 2 and a half hours after the race, Kate and Y/N is still not home, “Miles have you seen the two?” Mrs.Grose said as she approached me and Flora
“No, I saw them last at the track field” I answer “I miss Y/N where is she?” Flora complained.
SLAM!
The door opens all of a sudden and reveals Kate.... and only her?
“Did Y/N come home?” she asked “Uhm, no? I thought you said you’ll wait for her” I replied as i play with my tennis ball.
“wait so....., she isn’t here?”
“No Kate she isn’t, where did you guys last see her?” Mrs.Grose said in a worried voice,
“I already said it, she was last seen at the track field” I roll my eyes “I mean where in the field?” “The pathway to the roses” Flora uttered as she plays with her dolls.
“I-I’ll find her” Kate shuddered.
{A few minutes time skip, like 15 minutes}
I throw my tennis ball at the wall again and again impatiently.
“I’m going to go for a walk” I mumbled “Bye Miles!” Flora waved good bye.
I ride Samson to find Y/N, “I can’t believe I’’m going to be helping” I roll my eyes, I saw Kate roaming around the track field.
“Aren’t you supposed to be finding Y/N?” I retorted
“Yes but I can’t seem to find her anywhere” she replied “Did you even check the pathway of roses?”
“Oh.. I did but i didn’t go that far i-” I went to the pathway of roses cutting her off.
As I venture to the path that Y/N took I saw delila eating one of the roses, “Delila!” I went down tying her to Samson and continued my search for that witch.
“Y/N! ARE YOU THERE!” I cringe as i shouted it.
Your Pov
“I am so tired huhuhu” I wept, “ANYONE THERE!” I shouted
“oh...how dumb of me, no one is present in this estate at night” I sighed as I continue walking forward.
“Y/N! ARE YOU THERE!”
OH! rescue is here! “I’M HERE!” I yelled “I AM HERE!” i yelled louder this time, I hear stomping of hooves and see the one and only MILES FAIRCHILD,
“of all people, you, fairchild found me” I wept
“At least I found you” He rolls his eyes
“come on Kate is SOO worried about your ass” I was about to climbed unto his horse when.
“you can’t ride mine” he blurted “what? then how do you expect me to go home? walk? nah, no way” I retorted.
“Uhm, no? I brought delila here, so you can ride her, do you expect me to be a prince charming and let you ride MY horse? ugh no way”
“Uhm, uh, no I don’t I-i just wanted to annoy you” I rolled my eyes and hopped on delila.

omi doesn’t like flowers
sakusa kiyoomi x gn!reader fluff
cw: the reader has a little sibling, i hope nobody minds, there’s one line of very slightly implied nsfw, you won’t even notice
meant for kiyoomi’s birthday! happy b-day to my favorite boy <3
one of the first things you’ve learnt about your boyfriend, even before your relationship started, is that he rarely shared personal information with anyone. he’d go as far as put up a fake birthday on his social media to avoid the awkward wishes and tons of yet another gifts from fans he so didn’t like going through. apart from that, there was a lot of weird things going on with birthdays, in his opinion: for instance people automatically thinking about zodiac sign or assuming other things, insisting to have a party, (a surprise one was his biggest nightmare) and a whole lot of other stuff he found appalling.
so it was just simply easier to say his birthday is “mid november” and get on with his life as if he didn’t just straight up lie. and truth be told, many times had you heard that “oh, in summer” or “right before christmas” before you got to know the truth. it wasn’t that easy on its own, but ever since his first little white lie, you knew he wasn’t true with you, and kept insisting, until he finally pulled you to the side and told you his real date of birth, the one only komori, atsumu, and, as he used to say, “unfortunately” his family knew.
march 20th was the date, and since you wanted to tease him, a grin appeared on your face before you mumbled “so a pisces, huh?” and earned a glare so cold and deadly, you visibly shivered before apologizing.
the next thing you learned about him and his birthday, was that he was picky about gifts. which went well with that “i’m an old fashioned gentleman” facade, because he could just say “oh, you don’t have to buy me anything. your company will be enough” with a slight smile he’d practice for years, and people thought he was just being humble and polite. spoiler alert: he wasn’t. he just didn’t want to deal with his own pickiness, and explaining to people what precisely would he like to get was too much trouble, and took away the magic of it even for someone as blunt as kiyoomi sakusa.
it’s not like birthdays were such a big deal for him, anyway, he didn’t need any gifts or parties to celebrate the fact that he just got one year older. what was so fun about that? but like the pain in the arse you were, you kept asking him what he wanted for the occassion way before he asked you out, and he hated it, but not more than he hated the way his heart jumped at the possibility of getting something you spent your time on.
the first year of your friendship, you got to know the basic thing: omi doesn’t like gifts. gifts make him uncomfortable, he didn’t know what to say, how to act, what to do with it... does he open it right then and there, or wait, but why would he immediately thank someone if he doesn’t even open it? schroedinger’s cat: if he doesn’t open it, it might as well be thin air inside the box.
it was confusing, and weird. you also learnt that it was all caused by the fact that no one was in the house to celebrate young omi’s birthday back in his childhood days, since his parents were working and his siblings long away in college, so he just assumed it was a holiday to be overlooked and not dwelled too much on, and got so used to it, that now it bothered him to be in the center of attention for once.
the third thing you learnt that year: it was almost impossible to find him a good enough gift, at least from your perspective. you spent literal hours at the store, looking at the different things he might’ve wanted, but nothing caught your eye. you called all his friends, yet he hadn’t mentioned the thing he’d like to anyone, not even komori. so you decided you’d go with instinct and remembered one cold morning when he showed up to practice grumpier than usual, and when he was asked what’s wrong, he answered:
“i woke up late and didn’t have time to make coffee”, half mumbling, half actually speaking, eyes too tired to be annoyed, legs slowly sweeping one before another as if he was forced to come here. And that’s where you got your idea.
His first birthday with you, being his 21st, had started terribly, because it was wishes from his family. He’d told you multiple times he’d rather have them forget that send those copied off the internet lines that mean less than a “go fuck yourself”
later on atsumu insisted or telling everyone and it took poor omi more than twenty minutes to convince him not to, and as both the setter and the spiker weren’t in their top moods nor form, MSBY lost a match they had that day. so all he wanted to do march 20th 2017 when he came home was to lay flat on his couch and play with his dog’s fur while watching a crappy TV show. he most definitely didn’t expect you sitting in front of his apartment’s door, tired, almost asleep.
he sighed, approching you and slightly nudging your foot with his, making you shake your head and look up.
“you’re back!” you said with a smile, and he raised an eyebrow.
“and you look like a homeless person” he responded upsentmindedly, avoiding you to reach the door lock. only after you got up did he see a small package you held behind your back. “it’s not a right day to be celebrating me, y/n” he added, opening his apartment’s door and letting you in with a hand gesture. you went inside, not for the first time ever, but every time the feeling was the same, intimidating and cold.
“why do you think that?” you said, taking off your shoes and putting them on a rack, and turning around to see him navigate you to the bathroom. you placed your bag and the gift on the floor before following his steps.
“didn’t you see the match? i fucked up big time” he chuckled ironically, looking at himself in the mirror, and you could witness the disappointment and anger in his eyes.
“so every time you guys win and you get the credit, you say that volleyball is a team sport, but if you loose, suddenly it’s your fault?” you smirked, but to your surprise he nodded.
“precisely”.
“well, regardless, it’s a minor set back. you’re still the best they make” you tried to cheer him up, but only received an eye roll in return. “aaaand, you’re a birthday boy today!”
“don’t remind me” he sighed, walking over to the kitchen to see what he can make for dinner for himself and his uninvited guest, meanwhile you grabbed your gift and walked up right behind him, tapping his shoulder lightly.
“happy 21″ you whispered, a slight, soft smile on your lips, as you handed him the package. he looked at you with a tired look in his eyes.
“you know i’m not the biggest fan of gifts”
“just open it, grumpy face” you whined, and he gently took it from you, placing it on the counter and carefully unwraping it, to see a thermal mug. he sent you a questioning look, before you explained “you were complaining about not having enough time to drink coffee before leaving, right? well now you don’t have to drink it before leaving”
there was silence for a long while before he looked up from the mug and gave you the softest smile you’ve ever seen. “that’s so thoughtful of you” he said, and laughed a tiny bit, probably to cover his emotion, which obviously didn’t work “thank you.”
omi likes thoughtful gestures.
over the second year of your friendship, as he and his career gained more recognition from the public, he was “forced”, as he’d reffer to it, to share such a personal information that is his birthday date. the managers always claimed that it’s not a big deal, that it’s just gonna be added to the oficial page and his wikipedia, but judging from the amount of gifts atsumu, bokuto and hinata always received, he had his reason to doubt that.
and as it turned out, he was right.
because starting from march 10th, his personal mailbox as well as the oficial MSBY’s mailbox has been FLOODED with different things that he really had no energy to go over. and so, he invited one of his best friends to help.
so it was late at night on march 19th, and you were both sitting on the floor of his apartment, a mess of ripped wrapping paper all around you, loads of different stuff laying on the table, as you still had a lot of things to open.
“what even is the point in sending presents to someone you’ve never met? i mean less to them than their neigbour’s dog and yet i’m the one getting gifts? this is messed up” he kept on complaining, opening another package.
“it’s called being famous, sakusa-kun. you mean very much to people you’ve never met, because your journey to where you are now inspires them to keep going on their path until they reach their dreams” you said with a smile, confident it’ll ease his worries, but it didn’t.
“don’t know if i consider being in the Jackals my dream, though”
“you mean, you don’t think being a key player in a division one team is not a dream come true?” you asked, shocked.
“no, no, of course i think it is, i’d never thought i’d reach this far, but, there’s more things to be done, it’s not like i’m an accomplished person just yet”
that, you found interesting.
“really? than what are your dreams, sakusa?” you asked in a low voice, eyes fixed on his face, as he focused on reading a letter in his hands.
“national team” he murmured “MVP, a golden medal, a legacy that goes beyond just me” he opened up as if it was nothing, as if he was talking about his grocery list “but that all wouldn’t mean a thing if i were there alone, though. i’ve received plenty awards and mvp’s over the few years that i played, but i guess what would really matter, and make everything else worth remembering, would be... having someone be proud of me, i guess”
you felt your heart getting soft and fuzzy at the confession, wanting to respond, before he handed you the note he was silently reading.
“this is a poem, y/n, a POEM! what the hell, i don’t even understand what’s going on there” he whined, throwing his head back to rest on the couch seat, as you giggled, reading the note.
“it’s nice” you said in a high-pitched tone, pushing down a laugh.
“it’s too... sophisticated” he uttered, looking at you, a tired look in his eyes. “that’s my mother’s thing, to be sophisticated, i like simpler wishes, they’re easier to believe”
omi doesn’t like fancy words.
you nodded, but before you could say anything, your phone rang, and both of you looked at the screen. the hour on display marked midnight, and as the alarm ranged, the words “omi’s b-day!!!” appeared on the screen. he smiled subconsciously, noticing how you always address him as “sakusa” or “sakusa-kun” but the notif in your phone stated “omi”.
“looks like it’s the 20th already, birthday boy” you grinned, turning off the alarm.
“don’t call me that, what am i, six or something?”
you decided to ignore the comment, and smiled at him warmly before speaking, almost under your own breath:
“happy 22, sakusa. i wish you only to be here to hear me say happy 23 next year. and say so with pride.”
his eyes appeared foggy and glossy, but it was probably fault of poor lighting and tiredness.
“why stop at 23?” he asked, before standing up, and offering you his hand to pick you up, too.
omi likes very real wishes.
over the third year of your friendship you became very close. ever since that night on his living room floor, both of you couldn’t wrap your minds about anything other than each other. neither of you oblivious idiots found out what it was about, but day after day and month after month it was harder and harder to spend time apart.
before he could notice, sakusa always tried to find you in the crowd before serving, and that’s how he always used up most of his time. once, he even heard ushijima complain “how much longer are you going to take? be a man and beat me without your good luck charm!”
his good luck charm, huh?
you kinda liked the sound of that.
you also found yourself texting him every random thought that came to your head, sending pictures of everything, becasue you wanted to share as much of your life as possible, meeting up whenever you could and facetiming whenever you couldn’t.
it all started to go downhill when atsumu, bokuto and hinata started noticing. noticing the way he’d smile at his phone, the way he’d wink, smile, tease, joke, speak, even the way his eyes wondered when left unfocused, and a dreamy look covered his vision.
and they started to tease, and joke, and make his life all more difficult, just because “omi has a crush!”
because he didn’t. right? he didn’t have a crush on you, for sure, and it only annoyed him, how childish they were about it, how insufferable. they got on his nerves so bad that he stopped responding to all the messages, stopped smiling, joking around, and all, just to prove his point,
his point he knew was no longer standing.
and so atsumu would ask, after one of their practices, “hey omi, is your lucky charm picking you up? some birthday dinner, maybe?” he’d nudge his side with an elbow, raising his eyebrows.
“i don’t know” he mumbled “and stop calling them that”. the brunette kept looking for something in his bag, just to avoid atsumu’s tiring, curious glance.
“fine then, how about your significant other?” he continued teasing. it’s not like sakusa would hate that scenario, of course he wouldn’t, yet his mind kept spiraling - what if you came in and heard that? what if you assumed he was calling you that behind your back?
what if you didn’t feel the same?
“stop butting in my relationships for once, miya! how many times am i supposed to tell you i’m not in any way romantically involved with them? i don’t even like them that much!” he lied, straight in his best friend’s face, fed up with all the jokes and smirks behind his back, and judging from atsumu’s shocked expression, and the color running away from his face, it worked.
“what, don’t you have anything to say to me now?” he kept going, before atsumu shook his head, and pointed behind kiyoomi’s back wordlessly. the spiker raised an eyebrow, turning around to see you, in the flash, eyes wide open, a tiny little package in your hands, wrapped so neatly in colorful paper, with a little bow tie at the top.
even from a distance he could already half see, half imagine tears prickling your eyes before you smiled sadly, dropped the box from your hand and let it fall to the floor, and began walking out of the gym room.
“no, no no, y/n, wait!” he started shouting out, but your ears seemed deaf to his pleas, as he ran up to the door you just walked through, leaving atsumu alone, but with a condescending smile.
“i don’t like them that much my ass, omi-kun” he whispered to himself before walking over to grab his things.
meanwhile sakusa ran out to the reception room of the stadium, but as it turned out, it was filled with fans waiting for them all to come out, so they could wish him happy birthday, and it seemed impossible to get through the crowd and reached you, especially considering you were already at the exit door.
he looked around himself and noticed all the people, how many of them were there, and how close to him, and got paralyzed in place, wanting to move, or disappear, that’d be for the best, and yet he couldn’t even move one foot.
soon enough he felt a hand on his shoulder, guiding him back inside, his savior apologizing to the public.
“sorry guys, we have one more thing to go through! he’ll be out shortly” atsumu laughed off, before closing the door and handing omi the gift you left.
the spiker mindlessly opened it, only to find out a spotify code inside, put in between a glass frame. he took out his phone from the bag and scanned it with his app, gasping audiably when the page loaded.
lay back in the arms of someone by smokie showed up on his screen, and a smile crawled up his lips before he remembered how badly he fucked this up a second ago.
he narrowed his eyebrows before looking up to find the blond setter’s eyes.
“atsumu” his friend’s eyes widened in surprise upon hearing his first name, instead of surname “is there a back exit from here?”
atsumu miya smirked.
“bet ya there is, mr i-fucked-up-big-time” he answered, theatrically offering his hand, before taking the lead.
you on the other hand, came home peacefully, although hot tears were streaming silently down your cold cheeks as you entered the apartment’s door and looked at the calendar, showing the date of march 20th. in a sudden wave of aggression you ripped it off, knowing that there’s nothing to be so pressed about: he had no duty of feeling the same way towards you, why would you even expect it?
you went on with your day, ordering takeout for dinner, snuggling up on your couch and rewatching a series, not granting your thoughts access to yourself, and it was really going well, until you heard the doorbell ring.
“nobody’s home” you yelled, assuming it was either atsumu or bokuto on their way to cheer you up, and they’ll probably let themselves in as soon as they hear your voice, but that didn’t happen. instead, the doorbell kept on ringing. “ugh, just come in!”
they didn’t come in, so you lifted yourself off the couch and walked over to the door, opening it and gasping a tiny bit when instead of your dumbass friends holding McDonald’s you saw a one hundred and ninety two centimeters tall figure of a man, struggling to catch his breath, leaning on your doorframe, his black coat unbuttoned, cheeks red, eyes puffy and hair in a mess, not even gelled into place as they always are.
“can i help you?” you asked in a cold manner, voice sending daggers into his poor, confused heart, as he finally looked up to meet your glance, an apologetic look in his eyes when he tried to form a sentence.
“i think i can... no, way, i think i might...” he kept struggling, to which you only rolled your eyes, waiting for the continuation of that sentence.
“spit it out, sakusa” you stated, sending shivers down his spine with how annoyed you seemed.
yeah, spit it out, sakusa, he thought to himself before taking a breath and finally speaking up correctly:
“i think i might be in love with you.”
your eyes widened for a second as you tried to find evidence of honesty in his expression, tone, voice, because you definitely didn’t believe his words.
his heart dropped when you scoffed.
“i don’t need your pity”
that’s when it hit him:
omi doesn’t like to spend his birthday without you. you make it not only bearable, but fun.
in fact, he never wanted to spend it without you again. and as that realization made it’s way into his brain, he caught you closing your door.
“i respect you too much to pity you” he spat out as he placed his hand in between the door and the frame, making you unable to close it, even if you wanted to.
and there was the honesty you looked for.
“then why—” you started to wonder, but he shook his head before interrupting, a helpless look across his face.
to lay back in the arms of someone
“i’m afraid of... of this, okay? i’m afraid of falling in love, if this is any explanation for you. it’s like... you make me feel as if i’m on the top of the world” he laughed nervously, making you raise your eyebrows, before continuing “and it’s fucking scary to imagine falling from that high”
you give in to the charms of someone
his glance wondered all over your face to find crumbs of understanding, scared you’d laugh his confession off, a grimace of worry replacing the insecure smile painting his lips, and he was just one step away from shouting “i’m telling the truth!” at you, but you cut him off by opening your door fully, and welcoming him inside with a warm smile on your lips, and a reassuring sentence on your tongue.
happy 23rd, kiyoomi
“i think i might love you back”
omi likes feeling loved.
the next year flew by on both of you pushing each other’s limits, challenging each other like the both of you always needed, being there for each other, finding out how nice it feels to have someone there. it was coming home with a sore throat after a night of yelling “one more point, omi-omi!”. it was carefully intertwining your pinkies together while shopping without even realizing. it was awkward dates, because the label “date” always changes the atmosphere. it was taking weird selfies, it was having to part for out-of-town games and facetiming from hotel rooms. it was butterflies in the stomach and a ball of fluff in mind.
it was everything.
the first year of your official relationship flew by in no time, kiyoomi finding new joy in his birthday since now it was really a day to be remembered, marking your anniversary.
and just as you got home to his apartment after dinner, ready to unpack all the fanmail once again, the janitor of the building stopped you.
“sakusa-san, there was a flower delievery for you” he sighed, going towards a locked shelf and coming back with a bouquet, at which kiyoomi stared for a whole five seconds before you decided to take it.
“thank you for taking care of it” he muttered with a slight bow, you pushing him to go up the stairs. “who’s it from?” he’d ask you a minute later, halfway through the staircase.
“don’t you wanna check yourself?” you asked, but he frantically shook his head.
“check it for me, please”
omi doesn’t like flowers.
you nodded wordlessly before checking a card.
“well if i’m not mistaken this is your surname” you furrowed, struggling to read the handwriting. in your defense, the kanji for “sakusa” are quite complicated.
he looked over at the text before admitting “yeah, that’s from my aunt, she insists on sending those ever since i got into MSBY” he finally got to his door to unlock it “kinda sad how she didn’t even bother writing a text before” he chuckled, making you want to throw the flowers away.
you knew he considered them worthless if that’s the story behind the nice gesture.
the apartment door remained opened, but he didn’t enter, you almost stumbled over him, focusing on the note, and glanced over to see what caught him attention and prevented him from going inside.
“this is your surname, for a change” he stated, showing you a buffy envelope over his shoulder, but didn’t let you take it when you tried. instead he opened it himself, a neatly wrapped package inside, with a note at the top:
i wore glowes making it! i swear!
there was a typo in gloves, and the writing style could use a little work on it, but that didn’t affect kiyoomi at all, as he was hypnotized with his package after noticing your surname on it. he carefully opened it, to find a keychain, made from cubes, as the ones used in different boardgames, on every one there was a letter or a number, together forming the writing “kiyoomi 15″ with a heart at the end. it was all on a black string, and almost shined with how many times it was wiped before sending. after holding it in his hand for a while, he noticed another card at the bottom of the package, taking it out and reading out loud:
“please take care of my sibling. happy 24th!” he uttered in sheer amazement, as he grazed his fingers over the delicate ornament, before wordlessly going inside the apartment.
you followed him, closing the door behind you, worried about his reaction about your little sibling’s present, only to find him crouching before his couch, his training bag laying there as he tried to attach the keychain to the it’s zipper, smiling when he managed to do so.
before he got to turn around to face you, you managed to take a photo of him smiling at the newest addition to his training gear, and send it to your family with a caption:
omi likes personalized stuff.
over all the years of knowing kiyoomi, you’ve learnt so much about him, his life, his habits, everything. you knew him inside and out, and so he knew you. you’re laughing at your confusion and fear while you were buying his first birthday gift, as you sit on the floor in your shared apartment, plotting his 25th, biggest yet gift, as if he isn’t about to walk through the door, coming back from practice.
it’s almost ridiculous, how you struggled, wondering if he’d even like a gift, when right now you have a whole list in mind:
although omi doesn’t like gifts, he likes little thougtful gestures. he doesn’t like fancy big words, but likes real, honest wishes he can really take to heart. he doesn’t like spending his birthday without you, he likes feeling love, doesn’t like flowers, but does like his gifts personalized and touching.
you realize all the moments in your relationship made you know his every emotion and expression, but you’ve never seen your precious boyfriend cry, ever.
and you decide to change that.
you’re gonna make him something that’s gonna mask all the memories of his birthday being forgotten, walked pass by, pushed into the back, and not properly celebrated. that’s gonna outshine every single gift he’s ever got. that’s gonna make him so happy, he’ll cry.
an idea pops into your head as you get a pen and start writing.
dear kiyoomi,
_______
“dear kiyoomi” you get to hear him say a couple of nights later, he reads it out on your plea, with a smile across his lips, as you, atsumu, bokuto, meian and hinata, as well as omi’s older siblings and komori and osamu sit at the table, a cake and two traces of his favorite cupcakes are taking all the space possible.
omi’s voice is colored with a couple of glasses of wine, so it’s easier to him to relax and genuinely grin at the paper as he’s reading, all part of your plan.
“when i first met you, the first thing i found out is that you’re a private person. not that i was freaked out or anything, but you did have, and probably you still do, a heavy aura around you that may have flustered me a tiny little— a tiny little bit? smiles, your hands literally shivered” he stopped to comment, making you roll your eyes at him.
“zip it and keep reading, birthday boy”
“... a tiny little bit, i agree. nevertheless, the first thing i actually felt, was that you striked my soul as someone weird. thanks, baby” he interrupted again, but you urged him to keep reading. “... weird in a way that made me feel like i’ve never felt before, the kind of safe and terrified at the same time. terrified of what, you might ask? well, kiyoomi, here i’d like to quote you. you once told me that me loving you is like i had the power to break you, and you loving me back was like giving me a map with all the points to strike at. well if that’s the definition of love we’re going for here, than i not only give you a map, i’ll grant you a whole GPS. the trust you put in me every day to not take advantage of what you’ve given me is inspiring, and hence, i surrender every single point of ressistance i’ve held against you, i’m yours to snap at a wish, and trusting you that you won’t do it is something i can spend my life believing in.”
at this point kiyoomi had to stop and take a deep breath and a sip of his wine before continuing, clearing his throat a bit, chocking back his emotion.
“... throughout my years by your side, i’ve memorized everything there is to memorize about you and gifts. you generally aren’t a fan, but you like them carrying a lot of thought, dedication, you like them meant exactly to you and to you only. you don’t want pointless blabbing and overused sentences, you enjoy sincerity. you need love radiating from them in order to truly acknowledge them as something special. now, the last thing i know is that you don’t like flowers, but i hope you won’t be too angry with me and with what i’ve prepared for you. enjoy, signed, your smiles” he finished, looking up at you, already moving towards the counter, grabbing a bouquet from behind it.
he watched in amazement as you handed it to him, taking it in his hands, realizing that-
it was a bouquet of origami flowers.
“please, y/n, this is so—” he tried to find the right words, but once again, nothing came to mind as he watched your careful work from every side possible.
“shh, there’s a special thing to them” you explained, sitting back in your seat, exactly in a straight line from him, watching every single change in his expression as he tried to find what you meant.
he realized every flower had a little card sticking out from it’s center, and pulled the first one, the closest one to him.
“the first reason i love you” he read in a weak voice, chuckling nervously again before he found the courage to read it out loud “you make me feel protected”
he looked up at you with such a gentle and caring note in his eyes that you almost didn’t want to encourage him to keep reading it, but you did.
“two. you don’t smile too much” after that he raised an eyebrow, but read the next one “three. ...but when you do, you outshine the sun itself. four. you memorized my coffee order within the first two times we’ve been to a caffee. five. you got supplies to redo my coffee order without going to the— hey i swear i didn’t mean anything bad by it!”
“that’s literally the reason they love you for, idiot” atsumu laughed, urgining him to keep reading with a hand gesture. “come on, this is adorable”
“six. you have a playlist with songs that remind you of me. yes, i know this, omi, we share a spotify account. seven. you claim you don’t like interacting with people, but let a little girl propose to you with a cereal ring in the park.”
“this is too cute, omi is a softie” bokuto whined, hiding his face in his hands, but sakusa only slapped them off.
“am not. eight. you keep a mental score of all the times you won over ushijima. nine. you take way too much pride in beating atsumu in service aces”
“true that!” atsumu shouted, hiding behind his glass.
“ten” sakusa shook his head. “you don’t enjoy PDA, yet gave me the kiss of the century when i met your mother, just to annoy her. eleven. your childhood photos are too cute. twelve. you blasted hopelessly devoted to you the morning after we— i’m not reading that, idiot!” he half laughed half whined, in a high-pitched voice.
“omi-san knows how it’s done, apparently” hinata wheezed, komori accompanying him.
“did i ask?” he rolled his eyes and went back to picking lines from the flowers. “thirteen, you tug the corner of my sleeves when you’re stressed in public. fourteen, you have me saved in your phone as your good luck charm. fifteen. you put my head on your chest when i can’t sleep at night, to calm me down. sixteen. you make me laugh when i’m sad. seventeen. you almost never intent to make me laugh, yet always do. eighteen. you always make sure i’m carrying all the emergency items all me at all times. nineteen. you make me call you when i get home from a party, if you aren’t there to pick me up. twenty, you always insist on picking me up from wherever i am, because you’re worried about me. i mean yeah, what kind of a boyfriend would i be if i weren’t?” he genuinely asked, half of the guest shaking their heads.
“come on, five more to go, you adorable, clueless idiot” motoya pat his back and looked over his shoulder to see your careful handwriting, before sakusa hid the message from him.
“twenty one. you make me not worry about my future. twenty two, you try to do all your little morning rituals in advance when you leave, so i don’t miss you too much. i still do. twenty three, you’re never afraid to be bluntly honest with me. twenty four, you always ask if you can hug me when i’m low or crying. and twenty five—” he stopped more suddenly than anywhere before, eyes visibly watering before he dropped his head down and his it in his arms.
“what’s on there?” several guys asked over themselves, as omi kept laughing slightly, hiding tears in the sleeves of his fitted shirt.
“you’re gonna be the death of me” he murmured into the material, making everyone laugh, including you, who decided to walk over to him and hug him, resting your head on his, taking advantage of the fact that he was sitting and you could reach it.
after a moment of weakness, he showed his red and slightly puffy face, two trails of tears fitting his smiling expression as he struggled to say
“twenty five. you make me prouder and prouder every day.” he kept laughing through his tears, really trying to hide his emotion and failing miserably. “you really did try to make me cry on my birthday, didn’t you?” he looked up to you still embracing him.
“i suppose i did”
“well then, i’m gonna outshine you” he said, shifting in his seat in order to get up, wiping the last remains of tears from his face.
“what do you mean?” you asked, met with his confident smirk.
“you’re gonna see in a bit, trust me” he huffed, dusting off his pants’ material on the knee level, and reaching over to his pocket, in his hand a tiny, little box.
with a little more than an origami flower.

Once Bitten, Twice Stupid 192
192
Holding Keith’s hand in public felt nice. Walking from the hotel to the restaurant, Lance found himself watching families of all types as they walked. He couldn’t help it. A smile coming to his lips as he watched kids nag their parents, or listened to them as they played. His hand sitting on his stomach while his mind substituted the kids for their twins, and the parents as Keith. Keith would be such a good dad. He absolutely knew that for certain. He’d worried when Keith had spent most of the night sleepless, the walk seeming to invigorate him as it wore away Keith’s energy. Keith needed his coffee pronto, lest a server cop his boyfriend’s uncaffeinated anger loaf rage.
Leading Keith into the restaurant, it had a kind of rustic charm. Heavy oak logs made the walls, with all kinds of memorabilia stuck to the walls, including a giant stuffed fish with a plaque that red “Billy Bass”. It appealed to his tacky side in all the right ways. Sending Keith to find a seat, his boyfriend slouched off to throw himself into the only available booth. Lance giving a shake of his head affectionately. He really loved that cranky werewolf. Waddling over to the counter, he forced himself to remember to look and act like a girl. Keith didn’t know he was terrified of the same kind of comments made at the petting zoo being repeated. This trip had to go as well and as smoothly as it could. Picking up the menu, he knew instantly he wanted more than pancakes. Everything smelt vaguely appealing, and Keith would eat like there was no tomorrow.
“What can I do you for, darling?”
Jumping at being unexpectedly talked to, the woman behind the counter cackled at him
“Sorry, love! I didn’t think you’d be lost in thought over a menu”
Lance flashed a smile, careful of his teeth. He kind of wished he’d worn a set of glasses. The more he stood in the restaurant, the more he heard and the bigger the world suddenly seemed to be
“Sorry, everything sounds so good I’m not sure where to begin”
The woman chuckled
“I remember those feelings. How many you got in there?”
“Two. I guess I do look pretty big”
“And carrying low, you’ll be in labour no time, love. Now. What do think?”
No. Nope. No labour for him. Not unless he was comfortably set up at VOLTRON... he’d hold his legs together for as long as possible if their twins dared to think of coming this soon
“I think I’m famished. Can I please order two sets of pancakes and two sets of the bacon breakfasts? Ooooh, and I’ll grab a fruit salad, two of the largest coffees you have, aaaand... I think I’ll have a green tea latte... and a fruit salad. Yeah, that’s all, thank you... oh! Do you guys have soy milk? I don’t want to gas my boyfriend”
The woman behind the counter ogled him fo a moment, shaking her head and laughing again
“I don’t know where you’re going to fit all that... We have soy, almond, and regular. None of that skin stuff”
Lance blushed. He couldn’t help that he didn’t exactly know what he felt like, but food seemed like an amazing idea
“It’s for me and my partner. Soy will be fine, thanks”
The woman slapped his arm gently with the back of her hand
“I know that, love. Just an old woman teasing”
“You don’t look that old”
She looked about the age he should look... her name tag reading “Dae”, the white tag almost lost in the red of her bright red shirt
“That’s the best thing I’ve heard all day. Now, darling, cash or card?”
“Card please”
The woman rang up there largish breakfast bill. Lance paying as he was trapped into small talk
“So, love. Are you here for our Easter markets? Or you one of those passing through?”
“Oh, my boyfriend and I are spending a few days here. We’re meeting up with some friends”
The woman printed him a receipt without him asking
“I’m sure you’ll find this quite boring compared with the cities around here, but we have own charm. Now, can I get a name for this order?”
He’d been prepared for that. He’d made kind of a mental story for himself. He and his photographer boyfriend were driving up, stopping in small towns as Keith built up a portfolio in the hopes of turning to selling prints online
“Lancella... my, uh, parents were hoping for a boy”
“I’m sure they love you at any rate. We can’t help our names. You go take a load off and I’ll bring your coffee over. Take my advice, love, take a look at the markets while you’re here. They really are something else”
“Awesome. We might just take your advice. Thank you”
Siding, barely, into the booth opposite Keith, Keith was glaring at the menu in his hands. Tugging it free, his boyfriend huffed as Lance set the menu back into its holder
“Your coffee’s coming”
“Good”
Keith should have perked up at the thought of coffee. The scent was strong enough that Lance’s stomach was threatening to turn traitor right there at the booth
“Babe?”
“It’s nothing. You looked like you were having a good conversation, Lancella”
Lance rolled his eyes at the name
“I’m a simple man. The best lies have a kernel of truth in them”
“It pisses me off that you have to lie. You’re you. If people don’t like that, they can go play in traffic”
There was his grumpy little anger loaf. He’d also realised something that was likely to make Keith grumpier
“You can’t just put them in traffic. You know, we’re going to be in trouble”
Keith sighed deeply
“What for now?”
“I’m starving... and all that food has to come back up. Plus, apparently I’m going to pop soon”
Scowling at him, Keith sat back and crossed his arms. His voice firm and joke free
“There’s no way you’re allowed to even think about giving birth in this crappy town. Don’t even think about going into labour”
Sometimes it was scary how in tune they were. He didn’t want to give birth here, yet he couldn’t hate this town
“I don’t know. This town isn’t that crappy. This is the town you were born in and you’re not crappy. Maybe crabby... but not crappy”
“You’re fucking hilarious”
Lance shot his boyfriend double finger guns
“I try. But seriously, I’m starving...”
He’d also forgotten to do his shots before leaving the hotel room. Keith coming out with the bath mat around his waist had driven away the thought. His boyfriend hadn’t questioned why he’d packed heavier than usual. There was a whole suitcase of towels and bedding, waiting to be unpacked. His new plan was that after breakfast they’d unpack a little more, and he’d look up the directions to the cemetery where Keith’s dad was buried. The vampire knew his own pain from having now lost both his parents, yet that was nothing compared to Keith losing his dad at such a young age. Making the comparison seemed really shitty and like it lorded the fact Lance had had his parents for so long, that’s why he’d never say it out loud.
Their conversation was interrupted by the arrival of the coffee and the latte. Keith sliding both mugs towards him as Lance thanked “Dae”. Wrapping his hands around his cold drink, there was kind of a happy peacefulness as Keith took his first sip of coffee. This was nice. Them having no real schedule. Not rushing around. Kind of on a date, but not at the same time...
“Stop staring”
Chuckling, Lance moved his hand up to take the straw between his fingers, stirring his latte as continued to stare
“What are you going to do if I don’t?”
Kicking him under the table, that was Keith’s great comeback
“Really, babe?”
“Fuck you. Fight me”
It’d be soon long since he’d heard that one. The second they found out he was carrying, he had to behave himself and training went out the window
“I could beat you, but we both know you’d liked it”
Delivering the words slowly and purposely, Lance succeeded in making Keith choke on his coffee. Placing the mug down, his boyfriend coughed into his hand
“Fuuuuck...”
“Still want to fight me?”
“Keep this up and I’ll beat your arse so hard you won’t be able to walk for a month”
“Do you promise?”
On the back of choking on his coffee, Keith choked on air. His hand fanning his face as he shook his head
“You deserve to be punched in the dick for that”
“Nah. You love me too much for that”
“God. I fucked that one up”
Lance knew Keith was teasing, yet he felt himself automatically tear up. Apparently he could dish it, but his ego was too much of a diva to take it. Dropping his gaze to his drink, he felt awful for how he’d reacted
“Babe?”
“It’s nothing”
“You know I love you, don’t you?”
“Yeah. Sorry. I guess my hormones are being silly. It’s ridiculous”
Keith wisely decided not to agree with him, changing the topic
“What did you order?”
Raising his head again, Lance shot him that fake smile that hadn’t come out in so long that he wasn’t sure he was doing it right
“Pancakes. Eggs, tomatoes, bacon, sausages, and fried onion. Coffee for you. Tea for me, and fruit salad”
“You think that’s enough?”
Now he was feeling self conscious over how much he wanted to scarf down his food
“I figured you’d eat what I didn’t...”
Keith playfully kicked him under the table again
“Great. Now I’m the garbage disposal unit”
Shit. Why had his mood plummeted so much? Now it had, his ego was getting riled up. He was starting to feel vulnerable over being pregnant and into a strange place, where people he didn’t know could easily target him, or Keith. He couldn’t scent anyone like them in the place, yet he’d been so care free when they’d come in, he hadn’t thought to. The sudden shift to extreme vulnerability by his ego threw him off. They were a goddamn vampire. Had he been so inclined, he could easily take every single human on in the restaurant... Why was he suddenly so spineless? And why was his ego not propping his mood up with its usual douche attitude.
“Babe, you’ve gone pale. And you’re shaking. What’s wrong?”
He was shaking? He hadn’t noticed...
“Sorry. My ego... just went funny...”
Keith stared at him in confusion
“What do you mean?”
“I don’t know...”
He didn’t know. Was it not sure keith could protect them? No. Keith could and would go beyond them. Then why did it want him to run? All he wanted was a nice breakfast with Keith, so Keith wouldn’t be so stressed about what was to come...
Leaning across the table, Keith’s confusion grew. Cocking his head, he drew back slowly
“You feel like... you’re pushing everything away. If there’s something wrong...”
“I don’t know what’s wrong. I’m sorry”
Trying to let his ego flare a little, the instinct to run grew with it. Lance quick to force it back down. Maybe he’d been too focused on being home of late? No one had made any kind of threat towards him
“If you’re not feeling well, we can go back to the room”
“That’s not it. All of a sudden I got a spike of fear and I’m not sure why”
Keith pursed his lips, shook his head, then suddenly decided to move to sit next to Lance, a little too fast for Lance’s liking. Taking his hand in his, his boyfriend squeezed softly
“You don’t need to be scared”
Having Keith close should have calmed him, yet the spike of fear had spiked his anxiety over not knowing why he was kind of internally freaking out
“I know. All I wanted was a nice breakfast”
“We can still have a nice breakfast...”
“I’m so sorry. I know you’re stressing badly. This has to be so much all at once”
The restaurant was loud, despite it being breakfast time. Too many people seemed way too awake
“The glasses help. Do you want them?”
Yes. And ear plugs. Someone dropped something in the kitchen, Lance flinching at the sound as he shook his head
“No. No... it’s okay. I’ve been doing this longer than you have”
“Are you sure?”
“Babe, I’ll be okay. It’s just weird... I don’t smell anything... bad. Maybe I’ve spent too much time hermitting”
“Or maybe people just suck?”
“Careful, babe. Your grump’s showing”
Keith huffed with a pout
“I’m not being grumpy”
“Fine, your lack of people love is showing. I hope breakfast doesn’t take too long”
“You need to eat more. You’re all skin and bones”
Lance’s ego chose to take the wrong way. He ate. Keith knew he ate. He couldn’t bring Keith’s mood down any further
“I’m going to. Your babies are demanding it”
Bring their hands to Lance’s stomach, Keith rested them there
“Already causing so much trouble. You two better give your dad a break”
“That’d be nice. I think the first thing they’re getting when they’re old enough is a trampoline”
“Why do I feel like you’re the one who’s going to be spending more time on it than them?”
“Because it’s nice to lay out under the stars?”
They hadn’t done that in so long... Maybe they’d get a chance while they were here?
“I wonder what sex would be like?”
And there Keith went stating the real reason he supported getting their kids a trampoline
“I’m not conceiving any future siblings on a trampoline”
Keith bumped his shoulder lightly
“There goes that idea...”
“I’m going to put you in a time out if you don’t get your mind out of the gutter”
“But without the gutter, my mind would be homeless”
Without missing a beat, the werewolf had him groaning
“Who taught you that one? They need to be shot”
Keith grinned, Lance kind of envious that no matter how upset Keith was internally, he was keeping his ego well under control. He should be proud. No. He was proud. He just wished his would perk back up
“Pretty sure I learned that from you”
Great. He couldn’t exactly shoot himself... though he’d definitely shot himself in the foot in the metaphoric sense
“You don’t want to listen to me. I’m going crazy in my old age”
“You’re not even that old”
“Older than you”
Keith put on that bad southern drawl that never failed to work on him
“And twice as pretty. A pretty little thing like you should be careful. A big bad wolf might just gobble you up”
“Nah, my boyfriend takes care of all the scary things out there”
“I could take him. They don’t call me the Mullet for nothin’”
Oh lord. That was terrible. That was terrible and Keith knew it was terrible
“Is it because you’re kinda fishy? A bit limp all dead eyed?”
“Why, miss. I’ve been told I’ve got the perdiest eyes around”
Lance let out a long groan of defeat. He didn’t feel safe, and as much as he didn’t want to feel amused, Keith’s stupidity was kind of turning his frown upside down
“Alright. No more. I get it”
“Do you feel any better?”
No...
“Yeah. I’m still staving, though”
“It won’t be too much longer... hopefully”
   *
Keith kept a careful eye on Lance once their breakfast finally arrived. Lance noticing, and responding by eating despite the lack of interest in the pancakes he’d wanted. It was hard to pretend to be happy. Everything felt too much for him, and having it all feel too much for Lance threw him.
Holding it together, the walk back to the hotel was brisk. Lance tried to shake him off to go to the bathroom alone, but Keith wasn’t having it. As Lance “threw” himself down to vomit, he slipped behind him, tugging off the annoying wig so he could rest his chin on Lance’s shoulder. His boyfriend was shaking, his skin felt a little colder than its above barely warm natural state. Having played breakfast over in his mind, he still didn’t know why Lance had spooked, or why his ego had drawn in. The only thing he could think of was that that woman’s words brought up Lance’s fear of giving birth soon. No one had said anything to his precious mate. No one had barely looked their way. No. Everyone else was too busy fucking chewing like a herd of cows. The noise infuriating now he’d noticed.
Staying with Lance until his stomach settled, his boyfriend wobbled on his feet as he stood. Keith had spent the time giving Lance belly rubs and trying smother him in his scent to calm him down. His own ego was rattled by their mates strange actions, making it almost mad at a situation where no one was to blame. Rinsing his mouth out, Lance stared at him in the mirror. He looked exhausted
“I’m sorry”
No. Lance had nothing to be sorry for
“Babe. Hey, it happens”
“I’m supposed to be the one in control here... and I freaked out for no real reason”
“It’s okay”
Lance didn’t know he was semi echoing Keith’s earlier movement as he kicked the basin cabinet lightly
“No. No it’s not. You’re stressed. You’re in a new environment. You’re being forced to go out with me when I look like this. And I couldn’t even keep my shit together long enough to enjoy being out to breakfast with you. It’s fucking pathetic. I should be past all this shit”
“You’re overthinking things again”
Sighing deeply, Lance went to grab his toothbrush out the toilet bag, only to knock the contents out. Sensing the impending tears, he turned his boyfriend towards him, gathering him against him
“Babe. Hey. It’s okay. I’m not mad and you haven’t done anything wrong”
Lance shook his head again
“I’m sorry... God. I feel so fucking incompetent”
Lance wasn’t incompetent. Keith ego saddened to hear their mate talk about himself like that. He wanted to make Lance smile again
“You’re not. Didn’t Dae say something about a fair?”
Again, Lance shook his head
“Sorry... I think I want to lay down for a bit... and I really need to pee. Can... can you get the blankets out the suitcase? They’re in the black one”
“And you’ll be okay?”
“I’m going to pee, then I’ll be out”
Kissing Lance’s hair, Keith found himself more anxious over Lance than the thought of seeing his father’s grave. Maybe Lance was more tired from the day before than he was letting on
“Alright. I’ll be waiting”
When Lance came shuffling out the bathroom, he made straight for Keith. Keith having covered the top of the hotel bed with their three blankets, the bottom one acting as the sheet between them and the crappy bedding below. Lifting the corner back, his boyfriend climbed in beside him. Shoes and all. Lance had to be dead tired to not fight him over his shoes, which had kind of become part of Keith’s daily job. Laying himself against him, Lance rested his head on Keith’s chest, arm snaking around him. Somehow the feeling that came to mind was akin to missing that bottom step and terror flooring you for a moment as your stomach dropped. When Lance started crying, Keith could only let him cry it out. He’d gotten used to Lance having more emotions than he thought possible for a vampire. Lance’s motto seemed to be “sometimes you just need to cry it out”. Still. It sucked. They were so far from their friends. So far from home... and the hard bit was yet to come.
    *
Falling asleep Keith, Lance carefully pried himself off his boyfriend. He felt safer for being in the hotel room, and disoriented from how hard he’d seemed to nap. Creeping to the bathroom, then back into their room, Lance mentally sighed to himself over his emotions. He was being so dumb. Keith needed him... None of this... he couldn’t break down now. Taking his phone off the bedside table, the vampire crept back into the bathroom. He’d already talked to Keith, explaining that he didn’t get what was going on at all... Yet he wasn’t sure that Keith believed him. His people hating boyfriend had offered to take him to the markets on for Easter. That wasn’t Keith’s thing. That was Keith grasping at straws and trying to find a way to make him happy again.
The call took a long time to answer, Krolia’s voice happy as Lance wondered if he was annoying her
“Hey, Lance! How are you?! Did you and Keith arrive safely, I swear that boy never thinks to let me know he’s okay”
They’d sent a message to group chat, and that was about it. With some small unpacking, they’d both been too tired for phone calls and any form of in-depth conversation
“Sorry, Krolia. Yeah, we got here okay. If this is a bad time, I can call back”
“No. Not at all. Is everything okay? I mean, I’m thrilled you called, but I’m confused as to why”
That stung a little. He hadn’t spoken to Krolia all that much since Keith turned...
“I won’t keep you long. I have a question, and I think you’re about the only one who understands what it’s like to be pregnant”
He would have turned straight to Mami if she’d been alive. He felt like he really needed that maternal support right now. Hearing her voice would have driven home she was safe and she would have teased him for being hopeless
“Shoot away! Are my two grandbabies giving you grief already? I can have a stern talking to them, if they are”
He wanted to reach through the phone and hug Krolia. Keith was absolutely amazing with him, yet he couldn’t fall pregnant. A small snort escaped without him meaning for it to
“They’re fine. Using my bladder as a trampoline and wriggling around in there. I... uh... I was wondering if when you were pregnant with Keith, if you ever felt... scared for no reason”
There was a pause. Lance grateful Krolia was taking the time to think about it
“Sometimes, yes. Especially in the line of work I do... Did something happen?”
So Krolia has only experienced fear when thinking of vampires and werewolves...
“We we’re having breakfast and all of a sudden I got scared. There was nothing there to be scared of. No one else who wasn’t human... but... I feel like I was too care free lately. I didn’t guard my scent. I didn’t think about what would happen had someone caught it. I didn’t think about bringing Keith here and what if there was someone like us here... I didn’t think about it... and I feel... like me not thinking about it is the same as me thinking Keith... is... something less than he was”
Starting to cry, he felt really very stupid for his tears. He treasured Keith. But he’d been running around trailing his scent after him without a thought of the impact. All he’d wanted was to get things done and settle his ego
“Lance, you love that idiot son of mine. I’m sure at the first hint of danger you would have reacted. Is Keith there with you?”
“He’s asleep... I’m sorry for calling... I would have turned to Mami, but...”
“No. No. I’m glad you called. I want to be there for the both of you. Yes, I was scared. But nothing like Keith’s father. The slightest thing and he wanted to rush me off to the emergency department. You’re under a lot of stress. Have you been...?”
Lance shook his head, then remember Krolia couldn’t see him shaking his head
“Not yet. I freaked out and Keith had to take care of me...”
“You’re nearing the end of the pregnancy. Fears happen. I know that all too well. Especially how the insomnia can play on your mind. You’ve both been through so much, and I heard from Curtis that you were looking forward to some alone time with Keith. My opinion is that you let Keith take care of you. He’s strong”
“He’s not that strong when it comes to his dad”
“No, but keeping it in will only make him worry more. He loves you. If anything were to happen to you... well, I feel sorry for whoever crosses you. I believe both of you would sense actual danger”
“How am I supposed to know the difference?!”
“You’ll know. Take these feeling of fear and ignore them. Push them aside. They’re useless. Focus on you and my grand babies. You should be safe there. Coran didn’t mention anything about anyone living there that you should be wary about”
Lance sniffled. Krolia hadn’t given him much of anything useful and it sucked... but she tried in her own way
“Thanks, Krolia. I’m going to go back to Keith now”
“No worries. Let me know how everything goes. You can call me. Anything you two need...”
“Yeah. I will. I... thanks for talking to me...”
“Anytime. I’m your mother too. You can come to me”
Coming out the bathroom, Keith was awake, meaning he’d heard some, if not all, Lance’s side of the phone call. Stopping a few steps into the room, he expected Keith to be angry at him for admitting he hadn’t thought of his precious boyfriend’s safety. He hadn’t thought of anything much when it came to the more important things he should have been almost paranoid about
“Babe... come here”
Holding his arm out, Lance caved instantly as he moved to climb into bed with Keith, his emotions getting the better of him as he started crying again. Krolia wasn’t Mami. She didn’t give advice like Mami did. The vampire craving that maternal touch, that Krolia had only taken the point off of
“That’s it. I’m here... I’m here, let it all out”
“I’m sorry”
Keith gentle ran his fingers through Lance’s hair, hushing him softly
“Shhhh... I’ve got you. I’m okay and you’re okay. It’s okay”
“I miss Mami”
“I know you do, babe. I know. Let it out... let it all out”
He was such a selfish boyfriend, yet Keith loved him anyway. He didn’t deserve the love he felt from Keith, but he did notice that together like this, the fear had mostly gone away. There really was no substitute for cuddles with Keith.

Challenge (Katsuki Bakugou x Reader)
a lil fic i did for @imbnhatrash in exchange for some super beautiful art she did of my oc kiko!! its longer than i said it would be but i hope ya still like it fjhsd
Having someone like Bakugou as a boyfriend meant dealing with an almost endless amount of competitive and fiery spirit, but luckily for him, you were much the same and more than able to handle his cocky attitude. Hell, not only did you handle it, but you thought it was fair to say you did quite well when it came to giving him a run for his money and this challenge was like any other you’d ever had with him.
“I’m just saying, from an aesthetic standpoint, I can make a way more impressive meal than you ever could, Katsuki.”
It all started with that little comment that slipped during a conversation, or argument rather, that came up while the two of you were watching some overrated cooking show. See, Bakugou believed that if the meal was good enough than it shouldn’t really matter what the hell it looked like, but you thought that the eye appeal was far more important. The two of you made snide little comments back and forth to one another as your “argument” continued, but it was when you commented on how much more “impressive” your culinary skills were compared to his own, there was no way he could let it slide.
“Your ‘aesthetic standpoint’ is bullshit.” He scoffed, wiggling his arm from it’s place wrapped around your waist before pointing to the television, or rather one of the chefs currently on it. “The only reason that guy made it to round three was because his food didn’t taste like shit even though it looked like garbage.”
“Ok, but he was second to last and he’s only still there because someone else did even worse than he did.” You retorted, but when he simply shrugged and wrapped his arm around you once more, you decided to push his buttons a little bit more.
“Never thought you’d be the type to be okay with just barely winning, but hey, the more you know.”
Now that was definitely enough to catch his attention as his brows furrowed and the corner of his eye twitched.
“That’s not what I fucking said. You’ve never even picked up a damn spatula, why are you actin’ like you’re some culinary master, huh?” He questioned, “If you’re so good then how ‘bout we have a competition of our own. Unless you’re scared.”
Unfortunately, at least for you, he knew how to push your buttons just as well as you knew to push his and if there was anything you refused to do, it was giving into your boyfriend’s bullshit and letting him tease you for being a ‘chicken’ for the next week, so naturally there was no way you could do anything but accept his challenge.
“As if I’d ever be scared of you. What’s your plan?”
“No one uses the kitchen during the day anyways, if Aizawa will let us we can have a competition in the kitchen to see who can make the best food.”
“Hmm..Okay.” You hummed, tapping your chin in thought before adding onto his proposal. “It has to be the same dish though, and something neither of us has made. Aaaand, Iida and Midoriya have to be the judges!”
“What the hell!? Why?!”
“Because they’ll be honest and fair!! Your friends would just pick you out of fear, probably.” You teased, sitting up from your comfortable spot laying against his chest just waiting for him to say you were wrong. However, when he grumbled out an annoyed ‘Fine’, you knew he understood where you were coming from.
“So, let’s see. We should do something sorta simple, that way it will be clear to see the difference between my skill and yours….Maybe pizza? The ingredients would be pretty cheap too!”
Bakugou simply smirked, that smug ‘I’ve totally got this’ grin you’d seen plenty of times, before holding out a hand to you.
“Sounds fine to me. We’ve got a deal then, right? Winner gets bragging rights or some shit.”
You smiled, nodding your head before reaching a hand out to shake his own to seal the deal.
“Yup, we’ve got a deal.”
Your deal had been set and luckily, after some annoyingly persistent persuasion and a promise that you wouldn’t allow Bakugou’s literally explosive behavior to get out of hand, you were able to get Aizawa to allow the two of you to use the kitchen on saturday evening. It took a little more convincing to get both Iida and Midoriya to participate as judges, but when you worked in the idea that it was ‘good for morale’ and some other crap, they eventually gave in.
With everything set up, the two of you spent the rest of the week making sarcastic comments to one another about how you were going to win or how amazing your pizza would be, but all the chatter about your competition got around, and when it was finally saturday evening, it seemed like everyone in your class had gathered around the kitchen and in the dining hall eager to see who would win in this ‘romantic’ battle.
“So, what losing ingredients did you decide to get, huh Kacchan?” You teased, knowing just how much that nickname irritated him even coming from you as Iida rattled off a long list of ‘rules’ he had taken upon himself to make.
“None of your damn business, you should be worryin’ ‘bout your damn self right about now anyways.” He huffed out, but you could tell he was excited judging by the little smirk tugging at the corner of his lips, and when Iida finally called out a very professional sounding ‘Start!’ he was at it in seconds.
You followed quickly after, starting off nearly exactly as he had with working on a pizza dough, though you’d guessed the two of you probably had different recipes. You personally already thought you had this in the bag because you knew Bakugou would hardly be patient enough for his dough to rise correctly, and since the dough was the base of the whole dish, if you got that wrong it would be hard to come back from it. However, because you were busy concentrating on your own work, you didn’t even realize how surprisingly calm and concentrated he was and he was moving rather quickly. It was only when you heard Kaminari yell out some comment about how Bakugou would ‘chop his fingers off’ if he kept cutting up whatever he was cutting so quickly that you realized Bakugou was already moving on to preparing whatever he was topping his pizza with, thought this only encouraged you to pick up the pace yourself.
Eventually your group of ‘fans’ had calmed down and started their own little conversations, figuring there was no point in watching every second of your contest, but both you and Bakugou were focused as if this were a final exam for school. By the time you had finished your sauce, made from scratch of course, and assembled all of your ingredients before popping your pizza into the oven, you were a bit proud to see that your lover was just a tad bit behind. Once he caught up, however, you were both left to wait patiently for your separate timers to go off.
“You’ll still love me when I win, right babe?” You hummed, tilting your head to the side and batting your eyelashes dramatically with a sense of false innocence that he saw right through as he let out a scoff and rolled his eyes.
“I’m not saying you’re gonna win, but I’d love you anyways so it’s not like it would matter either way.” He grumbled out, leaning back against the counter with his arms crossed over his chest, but unfortunately for him his words weren’t as quiet as he thought they had been as a chorus of ‘Awwww’s and one ‘He DOES have a heart!’ rang out from your group of friends, setting him off into a screaming rampage as you simply laughed at him ‘disciplining’ his friends for teasing him. As scary as he may seem to those who didn’t know him, he really was just a grumpy dork and you had come to love these little interactions with him. While you did love him, however, you didn’t love him enough to give in too easily, so once both of your pizza’s were out of the oven and on the front table that stood before both Iida and Midoriya with a little group of people behind them, all your mushy thoughts about your love were out the door only to be replaced by determination.
Not to your surprise, Bakugou’s pizza didn’t look..terribly appetizing. It seemed like he chose shrimp and basil as his topping, but to be honest you couldn’t really tell. You had to admit though, when you watched both Midoriya and Iida’s eyes light up in surprise when they tried a piece, you began to get a bit nervous as they appeared pretty pleased. Turning to see a smug look on Bakugou’s face only fueled the fire within you though, so you looked on with confidence when the ‘judges’ tried yours, which, in your opinion, looked pretty amazing with toppings of teriyaki chicken and parsley that had been meticulously placed by yourself. It was a bit hard to read their faces, but you were hoping for good results. After a few minutes of the two of them awkwardly mumbling to one another, and Iida almost knocking one of the pizzas off of the table with how much he was talking with his hands, they both turned towards the two of you who were waiting to finally see who was right over this whole debate.
“Ok, er..” Midoriya started off awkwardly, scratching at the back of his neck before speaking up again. “Its a..tie? Or rather you both lost.”
“WHAT!?”
“For starters-” Iida interrupted, obviously not happy with the sudden outburst from both of you and the growing look of anger appearing on Bakugou’s face. “Bakugou, yours tasted okay, but the whole thing looked horrendous and the dough was way too chewy! You should have been more patient and let it sit longer!”
“HA! I KNEW IT!” You cheered, but your excitement was quickly dampened by Iida’s next criticizing words.
“Well yours wasn’t much better or else you would have won! It looked perfect but tasted awful, the only good thing was the dough!”
“YEAH, NOW WHO’S WHINING, HUH!?” Bakugou confidently spat back at you as you huffed out in annoyance at the fact that you actually lost.
“Well you don’t get to be all cocky because you lost too!! And it was because of your crappy presentation, so in the end I was still right!!” You retorted, crossing your arms over your chest as you tried to lie to yourself and say you weren’t grasping for straws after technically losing.
“What?! No you’re not! Obviously if it fuckin’ tastes gross no one gives two shits about what it looks like!”
“Wait, what?” Mina interjected from the dwindling group of people that were left and you sighed upon realizing you never really told anyone why you had come up with this whole thing.
“Well we did this because we were arguing about what was more important in a meal, presentation or taste.”
“Well that’s got a pretty obvious solution doesn’t it?” Kirishima asked, “Both are just as important, you can’t have one without the other.”
The silence that fell between the two of you made it obvious that neither of you had ever stopped to even consider that..both things mattered as you had gotten too caught up in the whole competition to really discuss it.
“Oh yeah...I guess that does make sense.”
Bakugou simply let out an annoyed huff, but you and most of his friends knew him well enough to know that was his way of admitting defeat. Neither of you won in the end, however at the moment you knew he’d just tease you if you spoke your sappy thoughts about how it was still fun to have a friendly competition with him, so instead you just smiled a mischievous smile before poking him on the shoulder, not ready to give up quite yet and knowing he’d be up for maybe one more little thing.
“Alright, so both presentation and taste matters...So whaddya say to round two?”
