My three year old daughter came home with a Minnie Mouse figurine, distraught. The plastic toy was missing an arm, and my daughter insisted she couldn’t play with it because it was broken.

I told her that she could still play with it! That some people were born without an arm or that they might get hurt and lose an arm, but that didn’t mean they couldn’t still play or have fun. I explained that some people might get a prosthetic or just have a stub. And she asked what a prosthetic was. I showed her a picture and she was like, “oh! A robot arm!”

When my husband came home, she thrust the toy at him and told him, “Minnie needs a robot arm.”

He was very confused, but he prints and paints miniatures from various table top games. My daughter refers to them as “daddy’s statues.” She knew he could help Minnie. So he dutifully printed her out a robot arm from a warhammer 40k model on our 3d printer, and then they painted it pink and purple together.

All of this to say, look at Minnie Mouse and her new prosthetic!!

Not at all, and welcome back to the library life! Your millage may vary based on which of these services your library has available, but here's a few things I know of off the top of my head that are pretty common:

The library might have CDs, movies, and even newspapers you can borrow as well

Libby, an app that uses your library card to borrow and download ebooks and audiobooks to enjoy on your mobile device or e-reader

Kanopy, a streaming service for TV shows and movies

Hoopla, which has a whole bunch of stuff like shows & movies, comics, and magazines

Your library might have a makerspace that gives you access to things like 3D printers, button makers, computers with a bunch of Adobe software, ect

Sometimes they host book clubs or other fun community events!

my "#library guides" tag also has a number of posts about services like these if you'd like some more info. Your library's website should also list what services they offer, and/or you could ask a librarian there. Have fun!

im sorry but i need to geek out somewhere and screaming into the void on tumblr is less likely to get me flayed than on twitter, especially if i get terms wrong. plus i can do a read more and yall can click into the tech talk if you want to verse it bombarding your twitter timelines

so idk if i only liked it or if i actually put it in my queue but i saw a post that talked about a few pieces of tech that focus on user repairs and being sustainable (fairphone and frameworks laptop) and after doing some more research into what they have to offer i actually really excited that these products are finely hitting the us market and that people are moving away from the belief that super smooth streamlined glassy = the future. being able to reliably repair and keep what you have alive verse throwing the whole thing away when maybe all you needed to do is add more ram to your current laptop (something that i would do with my laptop to keep using it for a few more years if it wasnt glued shut and i was at risk of cracking the screen) or swap out a fuse.

i know big corporations dont like it but i truly do believe with how much tech we use on a daily basis that the way that we are going to be more environmentally friendly is to move back to tech that we can hang onto for as long as we can and to recycle and then reuse what we cant. like with the frameworks laptop. i saw that they just partnered with coolermaster to create a case specifically so that you can reuse you motherboard, cpu, etc and make a portable workstation. you could dual wield with the laptop you just upgraded if you want to dedicate specific tasks to one or the other. they also specifically mentioned that you could screw it into the back of a monitor and create your own all in one. guys thats cool as shit??? if you had a 3d printer and some time you could even create that yourself

on top of the actual hardware part moving to open source programs when your able. when i update my desktop i plan on running linux. it might have a learning curve compared to windows but in terms of performance??? ive heard that it runs smoother even on older machines, that its more efficient because isnt running stuff in the background that tracks your data and shit. now i understand that not everyone can do that because there are some programs that dont play nice with linux but for my needs at least it does everything i would need it to. and maybe a couple years down the road we do figure out how to run these programs on certain flavors of linux since its open source and people fiddle with it so much. (still looking for alternatives to like word and excel though, i use google docs since its free but i want to move away from them as much as i can too since they laid of their youtube music team (i believe?? it might of been a different branch) for trying to unionize)

if anyone knows of any other smaller companies that actually focus on sustainability and user repairability please let me know. theres certain pieces of tech that i think are now unfortunately behind a software repair paywall, things that used to be just machines and are gaining more bells and whistles like cars and refrigerators if that makes sense. but the more we push for these things to be repairable by us the consumers id hope that would change, or there would at least be options that dont need specific companies to repair them or else they blow up

if anyone’s wondering what i mean by “tangled marketing” in relation to wish (2023): despite tangled mostly being a very sincere, straightforward fairytale with some jokes, the marketing was ALL jokes. the teaser was this weird scene where rapunzel beats eugene up with her hair in a variety of comedic ways. it does not appear in the final movie.

there’s a great lindsay ellis video on how disney saw the mediocre results of their last few 2d animated movies in the 2000s and had a drastic idea. next to a switch to 3d (that had worked great for dreamworks), the idea was also to change the marketing to be more like dreamworks. sadly, that video appears to have been deleted. so i’ll paraphrase: basically there’s more eyebrow wiggle, more “oh, i’m sooo naughty!” humor, more focus on how this is a movie with “jokes for adults” in it, etc. basically, the idea is to be more irreverent, and that will (in their minds) appeal to modern audiences than a sincere, unironic fairytale.

and it totally worked. tangled made a million buckets of money. then frozen (similarly marketed with a heavy focus on olaf and sven the reindeer) came along, and has basically been a constant money printer the last decade.

…here’s the thing, though. i kinda thought we were over this? the last few disney movies have not been marketed like this. even frozen 2 did not have this kind of marketing. it was much more openly “serious.” remember that teaser of elsa fighting the waves? the marketing was focused on the “drama/adventure” aspect, and this was reflected in the full trailer.

and frozen 2 made even more money than frozen! so you’d think this was done. there’s been a real cringe counterreaction to over-the-top “eyebrow wiggle” humor like this, as well as to annoying disney sidekicks. disney seemed aware of this, as they slowly cut out the “shrek lite” marketing.

…yet here we are. in 2023. after basically no hype for wish, disney is kinda pushing the dreamworks panic button. or trying to split the difference. cuz it’s basically a bait-and-switch trailer that devolves in real time, starting serious then descending into full-on eyebrow wiggle. desperately trying to convince audiences (and themselves) that this will always work. that they can always have a character be like “i found it with my butt! 🤪 ” and it will mean success.

I've spent the last 5 days putting together and painting this 3D printed model based on the Rayman 3 promotional Leptys statue!

Someone very kindly went out of his way to print one out for me so I could give painting it a go!

It arrived in pieces which slotted together really easily and just needed a bit of glue. I've never worked with something 3D printed before so I was looking forward to putting this together.

It was really light and fragile so that worried me when handling the pieces and sandpapering them, especially where there were parts that were really thin, such as the hair and the hoodie strings.

I sandpapered down the sharp edges and bits of plastic that were still stuck on. I was hoping I could sandpaper down the layer lines that are left behind by the printer, but the model has so many tiny details which I didn't want to lose.

Cleaned it up as best as I could, assembled the pieces and gave it a plastic primer coating so it was ready for painting. It stands at roughly 17.5cm.

Unlike a clay model, I wasn't used to having to put so many layers on. Usually a base coat is enough, but with plastic the light shines right through the model (can't really see it in photos) so I ended up spending a lot of time putting multiple coats on paint on.

During painting I noticed a tiny piece on the bird's head at the top was missing.

At first I thoguht there was no way I could fix it with clay because the figurine was made of plastic and would melt in the oven, but I figured I could eye-ball the shape and attach it on later. After a couple attempts I managed to get a similar looking shape made of clay glued on and sandpapered it to shape!

I know the big promotional statue itself has the ball at the top be a blue colour, but I couldn't help but find it kinda dull to look at. After looking up how the leptys statue looks in-game, I realised that in the game it changes colour from blue to purple and has magical swirls so I figured why not let's paint something like that instead.

After a couple coats of varnish and a felt bottom to protect surfaces, it was done. My photos don't do it justice, but I'm pretty happy with the result!
