🎬 — honeymoon era
“wow.” hanni said, shaking her head in mock disappointment as she clicked her tongue at the sigh before her. “we’re in public, guys, try to have some decency.”
the camera panned to you sitting on minji’s lap, the latter’s head on your shoulder.
[ayo?? 🤨🤨🤨]
“i’m only sitting on her lap, unnie.” you told the girl, exasperated. “and besides, you were sitting on minji-unnie’s lap literally a few minutes ago.”
“yeah, but she wasn’t holding me like that.” the vietnamese pointed at minji’s arms, which were around your waist, and her hands, which were folded on top of your stomach.
[parentz caught in 4k 📸]
“that’s because she kept sliding off.” minji argued, readjusting her hold on you. “she’s taller than you are, hanni, and her pants are more slippery compared to yours.”
“my pants and her pants are literally made out of the same material, unnie.” hanni said, rolling her eyes. “if you’re going to make up an excuse, at least make up a good one.”
“i think it’s less about the pants and more about our height, hanni-unnie.” you said, smiling innocently at the older girl.
“hey, i’m not that short-”
“but you are, unnie – you’re literally the shortest member of our group.”
[yn was not playing around whatsoever 💀]
Tumblr media
“just let me pay for it, minji-unnie.”
the older girl scoffed, gently pushing your hand away from the cashier. “as your unnie, yn, i can’t let you do that. let me pay for it.”
[she really used the ‘i’m older’ card lol-]
“this type of thing happens all the time.” hyein commented, shaking her head. “you’d think that one of them would cave and just let the other pay, but that never happens.”
“yah, you guys are holding up the line!” hanni said, gesturing to the growing line behind the group. “hurry it up already!”
[those people do not look happy lmfao]
“why not do do rock paper scissors?” danielle suggested. “whoever loses can pay the next time.”
[danielle is newjeans’ angel, both figuratively and literally]
“alright. rock, paper, scissors-”
you, having closed your eyes, peaked them open to see that minji had picked rock and that you had picked paper.
“ah…”
“woo!” you cheered, turning to the tired-looking cashier and handing him the money. “thank you! sorry for holding up the line!”
[he looks so tired of them 💀]
“i should’ve picked scissors.” minji pouted as the six – seven, including the cameraman – of you walked out the store. you giggled, linking your arms together and resting your head on her shoulder. “don’t be sad, unnie, you can pay next time, like dani-unnie said.”
[ngl, this makes me feel single asf 🫠]
“by the way,” haerin said to the camera, her voice low and barely being picked up by the mic. “it’s not even their money they’re spending. it’s manager-unnie’s.”
[oop- 🫢]
Tumblr media
🎬 — parents era
“-and that’s a wrap! good job, yn-ah. you nailed it today.”
“thank you.” you murmur, taking off your headphones. “oh, and before i leave, i’d like to tell you that hyein currently has a cold, so please be patient with her today.”
[aaaaaaaa yn <333]
“yes, i’m aware, minji also told me about her cold while she was here.” your ceo told you, clearly amused.
“ah, she did?” you asked, cheeks flushing a light pink. “she didn’t mention doing so.”
“yes, she did.” the older woman said as she chuckled. “she even told me to be patient as well.”
[hyein’s parents love her so much lol]
Tumblr media
“have you guys eaten yet?” (hanni)
“du-du~ bam-bam-baaa~ *insert opera singing here*” (danielle??? in the background)
“…most of them are saying that they have.” (haerin)
“that’s good! it’s almost, like, 8 o’clock right now, so it would be pretty worrying if they haven’t eaten yet. for those who haven’t eaten, make sure you eat something soon!” (danielle)
[danielle is an angel x2]
“‘have you eaten?’”(haerin)
“not yet. we just came back to the dorms like, an hour ago from practice, so…” (danielle)
“we were going to get some take out, but then minji-unnie and yn said that we’ve already gotten take-out three times this week.” (hanni)
“both yn-unnie and minji-unnie are currently in the kitchen making food for us to eat, and hyein is helping them, i think.” (haerin)
[i don’t think i need to say much about this lol]
Tumblr media
soon after that, yn also went on an audio live.
“‘you take care of your unnies and younger members so well that they probably think of you as their mom.’ really?”
[yes, really.]
“huh, i never realized i was like that. if anything, i thought you guys would say that about minji-unnie. she’s the one with all the ‘minji being newjeans’ mother’ videos…”
[oh shit, has she seen my videos?? *insert shameless self plug here*]
“anyway, i never saw myself as a ‘mom’ figure to anyone. hyein, maybe, but she’s our maknae, so…”
Tumblr media
🎬 — divorced era (which didn’t really last long tbh)
“they’re asking what we did earlier today.” haerin reported, moving back from the camera so that your fans wouldn't just be looking at her eyes and nose throughout the entire live.
“well, we had practice of course,” danielle said, lips pursing as she tried to remember what the six of you had done. “and after that…”
“we went out to eat for the first time in like, months.” hanni finished, smiling cheekily. “it was soooo good.”
“we ate went out to eat just last week, hanni-unnie.” you said, smacking the older girl’s arm playfully. she laughed before jokingly rubbed her arm, mouthing the word ow to the camera.
[hanni and yn, the second tom and jerry of newjeans lol]
“oh, and this was the first time yn-unnie and minji-unnie didn’t argue over the bill!” hyein remarked, scrolling through the comments on her phone. “minji-unnie just gave the money to the cashier and yn-unnie didn’t even say anything.”
[trouble in paradise?]
“oh yeah, that was pretty weird.” hanni said, discretely nudging hyein. “it’s like, never happened before, so we were all pretty surprised.”
“well, there’s always a first time for everything.” danielle murmured quietly, glancing at both yn and minji before saying in a louder voice, “the food was really good though. it was sort of pricey, but good.”
[smooth dani to the rescue.]
Tumblr media
“man, we saw so many binky light sticks at the music show,” hanni said, sighing happily. “we really enjoyed seeing you guys there, and i hope you guys managed to get some of the gifts we gave out!”
“oh, someone asked, ‘what gifts?’.” danielle said, pointing at the comment on her phone and showing yn and haerin, who were sitting beside her. “yn-ssi, why don’t you tell us about the gifts hanni-nim was talking about?”
amused, you decided to play along, even going so far as to grab your water bottle and place it under your mouth as if it were a mic.
“well, danielle-nim, the gifts hanni-nim was talking about are distributed at a certain location near the venue of our music shows.” you say, picking up your phone. “and if you follow our twitter, newjeans-underscore-ador, you will get tweets on where these locations are, like this one.”
you raise your phone to the camera, showing off the tweet that had been posted that morning.
“…what kind of broadcast is this?” hyein asked from behind the two of you, staring judgementally at you and danielle.
you both laugh, startling haerin which made the two of you laugh harder. behind you, minji was spaced out, a undiscernible look in her eyes. hanni sighed, placing a hand on her shoulder with a sympathetic look on her face.
[there is no heterosexual explanation for either of those actions lmfao]
“moving on,” you say, pulling your phone back as your laughter gradually turned into giggles. “hanni-unnie is right. seeing all your binky light sticks really made my day!”
“‘they looked like hearts’.” haerin read out loud before nodding her agreement. “they did look like hearts – tiny, colorful, glowing hearts.”
“hearts…” you repeat, mindlessly raising your hand and creating half of a heart with it. instead of completing the heart with her own hand as she normally did, though, all minji did was stare at it blankly.
[oh- that’s not good.]
fortunately, haerin noticed your hand awkwardly hanging in the air and shifted towards you subtly, looking at the camera as she moved her hand to yours to complete the heart.
you smile at her thankfully, though it's obvious that you were a little upset by minji’s actions, or rather, a lack thereof.
[ㅠㅠ]
Tumblr media
🎬 — and here's a bonus clip of just the two of them talking about their ‘divorce’ lol
“some people are asking about our… divorce??” (yn)
“we had a divorce?… wait, we were married????” (minji)
[am i the only person who thinks minji asking that was funny?]
“i think it’s our ship name, unnie. y’know, ‘parentz’?” (yn)
“oh yeah, that… why are they saying we got a divorce??” (minji)
“apparently, we looked upset with each other last week during the live.” (yn)
“ah, yeah, last week…” (minji)
“sorry guys, we can't talk about it too much ‘cuz it was pretty personal and not something we’d like to share, but don’t worry. we weren't angry at each other or anything, minji-unnie was just worried about me.” (yn)
“worried is an understatement.” (minji)
“anyway, as i said, don't worry. minji-unnie and i are perfectly fine now!” (yn)
“describe ‘perfectly fine’.” (minji)
“…”
“okay, okay, sorry, honey, i won’t joke about it again, stop glaring at me like that.” (minji)
“…”
“*ahem* moving on…” (minji)
[lol someone’s sleeping on the couch tonight – AND DID YOU CATCH WHAT MINJI SAID?? ‘honey’?!? anyway, thank you for watching, make sure to like and subscribe, and i’ll see you next time <3]

Began Beginning - Myanmar's first BL
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not So Quick Pitch (or is it a pitch?)
Cause I got a lot of thoughts
8 eps 25 min ea YouTube
Began Beginning feels very much like a first timers BL. Which it pretty much is. There’s a lot of explaining and info dumping and information that we really don’t need about the characters (or the family) especially in the first couple of episodes.
Here's your hlepful breakdown:
Tumblr media
Mani = main boy workaholic, probably gay, acts ace
Hlyan = cute flirty bestie, smoker, closeted gay (for good reason) in love with Mani (becomes main character about 3/4 way through)
Walar = openly gay visitor recovering from a breakup who enters their codependent dynamic and things happen as a result
Thae = Mani & Hlyan’s other bestie, trans
Tumblr media
I was tempted to say this reminded me of early Vietnamese BL, but in actuality what it reminded me of most was the stuff we got from way back in the early 2000's out of Hong Kong, or more recently from the Philippines (I'm thinking about something like The Boy Foretold by the Stars).
There is a grungy sticky authenticity to these works, of which Began Beginning is now a part. They have their own tarnished charm. For all their hiccups in storytelling and absurdities, there is an almost documentary feel to them, partly as a result of the inferior quality of production and filming (which is entirely economic). But that itself also somehow adds to the appeal.
This kind of BL is entirely the opposite of something out of Korea or GMMTV. And if you like that BL best, you aren't gonna like this product. But as much as KBL wins top ranks from me pretty consistently these days, sometimes I enjoy this kind of BL too.
The range itself keeps the genre vibrant and healthy.
Tumblr media
So what is Began Beginning about?
Childhood best friends must come to terms with their own identities and true feelings for each other when a new boy comes to town, putting them into conflict with their families and ultimately, each other.
For the first half of this show there’s a lot of sitting across from each other and talking about life choices over yummy food and then going to tourist spots (mildly boring and not particularly important to the plot).
It changed tone about 2/3 in to be way more of a coming out family drama about forced marriages and homophobia.
And then at the very end it changed again, becoming a full on soap opera with kidnapping, crazy characterization shifts, and rescue missions.
All in all? It was a wild raw creature to consume as a binge. No kisses since this is Myanmar, but a very romantic end, so I think maybe actually worth your time? I'm certainly glad I watched it.
Recommended with lots of reservations but great respect. I’m going with a 7/10.
Tumblr media
There is a particularly important part at the end when Hlyan talks about asking Thae to dress him as a girl to see if he was third gender because he had these feels for another boy. And how unpleasant that made him feel. I thought it was hugely impactful as a window into the boxes same sex loves in modern society forces upon us. No matter what options our culture provides for us, if the boxes are limited we feel limited too. Also, drawing a distinction between gender identity and sexual identity. Lovely bit of storytelling.
(see comments, turns out this is not the first one)

My Favorite New Manga and Graphic Novels I Read in 2023
It's time to take a look at the comics and manga I read this year! I read  a whopping 78 manga and graphic novels in all. Here's a link to my Goodreads year in books (the manga is at the beginning, the novels start with Siren Queen) and my storygraph wrap up.
I also read 36 novels! If you want to see my favorites, check out my reviews here!
And finally, I've got the continuing manga series I've enjoyed this year here, so check that post out too!
Tumblr media
The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen
This is a tale about a first-generation Vietnamese-American boy struggling with coming out to his mother. He connects with his mother through fairytales-- she uses them to express her journey as an immigrant, and he uses them to explore his queerness and identity as a Vietnamese kid growing up in America. It's an absolutely gorgeous book full of Trung Le Nguyen's signature stunning art. The fantastical, ethereal fairy tales are weaved beautifully into the lives of the characters. The book explores how fairy tales can form connection, can express culture, can tap deeply into something real and true, and can offer tragedy and catharsis. The protagonist uses fairy tales to write his own story, and the ending is lovely and moving.
Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles by Mark Russell and Mike Feehan
You may know Mark Russell from his darker, socially aware re-imagining of the Flintstones, which made quite a splash on Tumblr with this post. Well, I had pleasure of meeting him at a local convention, and I finally got his comic re-imagining of Snagglepuss, also of Hanna-Barbera. He re-imagines the titular pink puma as a closeted gay playwright in the 50's dealing with McCarthyism. It's as wild as it sounds, but also really digs into the politics of the time, the struggle of standing against oppression and how art fights through suppression and censorship. It's tragic, hopeful, poignant and full of historical references. I enjoyed it ! Definitely be cautious if you're deeply disturbed by homophobia and suicide.

The Summer Hikaru Died by Mokumokuren
A story about a teenage boy, Yoshiki, who realizes that his best friend and crush Hikaru has died and been replaced by a strange eldritch being who is imitating him. But, missing his loved one and desperate to cling to any piece of him, Yoshiki decides to keep on having a relationship with this mysterious entity. This book's horror is visceral and sublime, especially the bizarre, creepy, beautiful body horror involving the being who replaced Hikaru. It's an exploration of anxieties involving grief, relationships, and sexuality that hits just right, and the atmosphere layered with dread is top notch. I love me some messed up relationships and unknowable queer monsters, and this book delivers.
Chainsaw Man, Look Back and Goodbye Eri by Tatsuki Fujimoto
Chainsaw Man needs no introduction, but I did end up really enjoying the story of the doggy-devil boy hunting other devils. It got so tragic and intense at the end, with lots of great surreal horror imagery and darkly funny moments. I'm impressed it went so hard, though the random powers that kept piling up made what was happening hard to follow at times, especially in fights. I'm also enjoying the current weird arc starring a class-A disaster girl and the demon sharing her body.
Look Back
I really do enjoy how Fuijimoto writes messy pre-teen/teenage girls. They ring so true. The manga follows the fraught friendship between two girls as they create manga, exploring the struggle of art mixing with real relationships, and how someone keeps creating after tragedy. It's a little hard to follow at times (especially since I have to differentiate the leads based on hairstyle), but it's a good read.
Goodbye Eri
Probably my least favorite of the three, but it's a fun read- a weird ride that examines the thin line between fiction and reality in art and makes good use of Fujimoto's cinephile background and signature gaslight gatekeep girlboss characters.
Is Love the Answer? by Uta Isaki
Tumblr media
The story follows a teenage girl, Chika, who has always struggled with not being attracted to anyone. When Chika enters college, she meets queer people all across the spectrum of asexuality, and starts exploring her own identity. As an ace, this is the best story about asexuality that I've read. It was a nuanced look at asexuality and queerness and all the variations. Chika's journey and how she found her community was moving and poignant. It's a honest, moving look at relationships and identity, and how complicated and hard to define both of those things can be. I loved the moments of Chika imagining herself as an alien to explore and cope, and how she bonded with people through magical girl shows and other geekery. My favorite new manga of the year, it really connected with me!
The Girl that Can’t Get a Girlfriend by Mieri Hiranishi
Oh girl, I've been there. This is a fun autobiographical comic about a butch4butch lesbian's struggles finding a partner in a word that favors butch/femme, and it's just an honest look at the messiness of loneliness and relationships. I also appreciate that crushing on Haruka in Sailor Moon and becoming a HaruMichi stan was the beginning the author's queer awakening because uh...same! She has taste, and is truly relatable.
Qualia the Purple: The Complete Manga Collection by Hisamitsu Ueo and Shirou Tsunashima
See my review of the light novel here for my general thoughts on the story, since it's adapted pretty faithfully. I do think the manga is overall the best experience though, because the illustrations break up the detailed explanations of quantum mechanics a bit, and it includes a bit of extra content that fleshes things out, especially withthe ending.
The Single Life: 60 year old lesbian who is single and living alone by Akiko Morishima
Just like it says on the tin, this focuses on a 60-year-old single lesbian. And definitely the shortest thing on here, since only one 30 page chapter is out.  It's a grounded story about a woman looking back on her journey to finding her identity, touching on sexism in the workplace and other challenges. It paints a portrait of a proudly gay elder who's still perfectly content being single and feels fulfilled by the life she had rather than regretting past relationships. I definitely want to see more.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm by Hiromu Arakawa
Arakawa's latest, the story is about a boy who lives in a small village with his little sister is imprisoned and has to carry out a mysterious duty...but then the village is attacked, supernatural daemons awaken, and everything he knows might be wrong. I'm enjoying this fun romp so far! It delivers an really nice plot twist right out the gate (and an excellent subversion of the usual shonen "must-protect-my-saintly-sister" narratives). It boasts Arakawa's usual fun cast and interesting world (and cool ladies). There's some slight tone and pacing issues in the first part- there's so much time spent explaining mechanics the lead doesn't really get to react to his life turning upside down. But it starts smoothing out by the second volume. I'm excited to see what's next!
Superman: Space Age by Mark Russell and Michael Allred
This is a retelling of Superman set throughout the late fifties to early eighties that has Superman interact with the political and social upheaval of the time and question his own role in things. It explored the Superman mythos through a lot of cool new angles, and has a good Lois (why yes she would break Watergate) which is how I always measure a Superman adaptation. My one complaint is, while I liked some of the things it did with Batman, the ending with the Joker was pretty weak. The ending of the overall comic will also be bizarre for anyone not uses to how weird comics can get, but I think I dug it.
#DRCL by Shin'ichi Sakamoto
A manga retelling of Dracula that focuses on Mina as the protagonist and imagines the characters at an English prep school. It adds a lot of  diversity to the characters  and has exquisite, evocative art. I'm curious where it will go and what it  intends to do with all it's changes (especially Lucy), because right now it's mostly vibes and creepiness and the direction isn't clear.

p.2 of kites
Tumblr media
the bell's tone rings all throughout the school which indicates that all students should've now gotten to their homerooms, prepared and ready to learn on another day of the week.
everyone in the homeroom shuffles to their seats, patiently waiting for their teacher to arrive to the class.
minji takes her gaze off the window beside her, resting her chin into the palm of her hand which was propped on top of her desk. facing towards the front of the classroom, she rolls her eyes upon seeing the back of you.
watching you stack all your school materials neatly with the dumb bright grin of yours.
kang y/n, otherwise known as another contender for the top rank of the school.
for years and years, going back to even primary school, both you and minji concluded that the two of you would never be friends because of the academic rivalry between you too. even your birthdays were the same, although you didn’t want to admit she was older than you by two minutes.
every subject was a tie between the two of you. while you aced in science and english, minji aced in math and social studies.
everyone makes sure to not speak of minji’s name in front of you nor speak your name in front of her. it automatically and naturally became a rule in your grade.
“i heard that today during social studies before the school day ends, each class is going to have a competition for who will run class president.” one of your best friends, rei leans over to your ear and whispers to you.
from the girl’s breath, you let out a giggle and shove her back to her seat.
hanni, minji’s seatmate and a friend of both you and hers confusedly follows the line of minji’s sight of vision. she wonders why minji is looking at you so intently.
“bro, do you hate her or love her?” hanni asks, bursting the other girl’s train of thoughts.
minji blinks, offended by the younger’s question. “what are you talking about..?”
“hmm..” hanni thinks to herself, looking at the back of your head. “do you think y/n is dating her?”
are you?
wait-why does minji want to know so bad about whether or not you’re dating rei?
“why would i care?” the older replies, trying to sound uninterested but deeply, a small part of her is curious and she somehow feels upset at the idea of you dating someone.
the vietnamese playfully rolls her eyes, shrugging at minji’s response.
“i just know someone who’s curious about her.”
before the other could ask of who it is, the door of the class abruptly opens with their first teacher walking in to start off the day.
“good morning class!”
and for the first time, minji couldn’t focus during the class period because she couldn’t stop wondering about the idea of you dating someone.
her mind was filled with you and she hated it (no, she doesn’t).
her eyes couldn’t stop staring at the pretty head of yours and she can’t help but feel some sort of envy…towards you or rei.
Tumblr media
“i heard that today before the day ends, each class is going to have a competition for who will run class president.” your best friend, wonyoung says while the both of you walk towards the usual lunch table where you and your friends would sit. “you should run! you’re like the perfect candidate!”
with your lunch in your hand, your mouth lets out a side smile at the idea. “i’m not really a fan of taking things in charge.”
“but you’ll get a vice president too.” wonyoung smirks, shrugging. “who knows? it could be a pretty girl.”
opening your mouth to say something along the lines of ‘i’m not dating til i figure out what i want to do after high school’ but, you close your mouth and halt at the sight of someone’s not-annoying-to look-at face sitting at the table.
“i hope you didn’t mind me inviting them to sit with us.” jiwon smiles apologetically at which you smiled in response before she looks back down at the book she’s cramming info from for the english quiz in her class.
wonyoung suddenly remembers about a basketball meet. “oh yeah, some tables are being used for some sort of sports thing and unfortunately, our rei is stuck managing it.”
oh.
you scan the entire rounded table, looking for a place to sit until hanni waves at you, motioning for you to come sit next to her. “y/n! come over here!”
“don’t worry, i’ll manage without you.” the taller standing besides you pats your shoulder before sitting down next to jiwon.
you smile back at the australian-vietnamese girl before realizing the open sit near her is the one between her and minji.
minji looks away, choking on her water in the process and spilling out of her mouth.
“bro, you’re going to get her spot all wet now!” hanni exclaims, handing napkins to the other to wipe.
minji’s eyes widens, twisting the cap back on the water bottle that almost took her life a few seconds ago. “bro! you’re not asking me to wipe it, are you?”
“i’m not asking you.” hanni’s eyes got smaller, deadpanning. “i’m ordering you to, bro.”
“she can sit perfectly fine in a wet seat!” minji argues back while still grabbing the napkins from hanni.
there’s no way she’ll ever be caught doing that, especially for you.
you let out a huff, walking to where they both stay seated. gently placing your lunch on the table, you yank the napkins from minji’s hand and started wiping down the water off the empty spot. “i’ll just do it myself.”
on the other hand, minji looks down at her fingertips that grazed against yours. she felt sone sort of electricity from the sudden contact, wondering it was because of the slight wind coming from the canteen’s windows. for a slight second, she feels bad about not wiping down the mess she made but then again, she doesn’t care.
upon sitting down between what seems like a tight spot than usual, your shoulder lightly brushes against minji’s shoulder, prompting her to hold her arm in place upon the touch.
there it was again. the slight electricity shock from earlier.
“sorry..” you mumbled lowly, only for you and her to hear as you scoot towards closer to hanni.
the other girl suddenly doesn’t want you close to hanni. she dislikes it when the other wraps an arm around you, laughing as she excitedly talks to you about today’s event supposedly during the last class.
for the first time, minji’s lunch doesn’t taste as good anymore and she finds herself drinking water only in hopes of it spilling again for your attention to be off of hanni and the others.
meanwhile, one of minji’s friends and an acquaintance of yours, haerin quietly chews on her pizza while noticing that the older isn’t constantly talking about how annoying you are or how you were being the teacher’s pet by raising your hand first for a question as she normally would.
the cat eyed female glues her eyes on the body language of the older, noticing the way she’s constantly trying to divide her attention off of you talking to hanni and danielle between the hand of the australian-vietnamese resting comfortably on your knee. and haerin could’ve sworn she saw minji’s eyes slightly squint at the physical touch but she could be wrong.

after lunch, you decided that before class, studying at the library will help out your grade in math. after all, you aren’t that terrible at math. it normally took you a while to grasp the concept.
today?
today is a different story because you’re stuck on a problem that’s taking you more than 5 times to do and you still haven’t gotten the answer.
and although, the teacher walked through an example of this problem earlier back in the morning, it’s still doesn’t make complete sense to you. looking around the room for one of the tutors, a frown forms upon your lips once realizing that the tutors are probably out for for their lunch break.
“do you need help?” a voice interrupts your movement from behind.
whipping your head back at the familiar voice, you’re met with kim minji.
’what did i ever do in my life for the universe to keep cursing me like this?’
the girl standing behind you blinks again, wondering why you still haven’t answered her.
“it’s fine. i can solve it on my own.” you grumbled, turning back around and picking up your pen again to write in your workbook.
minji huffs from behind you, feeling offended at the way you’re acting towards her.
here she is, offering to HELP you and yet you refused her.
“you’re not even starting the problem off correctly.” the girl scoffs, peering from where she stood while you start to hunch over to block the view of your work.
with a blank face, you turn back to stare at her. “listen here kim, i don’t need your help. if you’ll excuse me, i need to get back to doing my work before class starts. so quit bothering me.”
minji deeply inhales, trying to calm herself down from the attitude coming off from you.
she can leave, yet, she doesn’t want to.
“why won’t you just admit that i’m smarter than you?” minji asks, a smile tugging on her lips knowing what your reaction is going to be.
is this girl for real?
she watches as your face scowls, eyebrows furrowed as you open your mouth ready to explode off on her. and yet, she’s intrigued by how pretty you look even when you’re mad.
“i’d like to say the same thing for you.” you stand out of your seat, trying to look initimidating but failing miserably once you realize that the girl you very much dislikes is taller than you.
minji dryly laughs, putting a fake smile on afterwards as she leans closer to you. a bare few centimeters away from you and she swears that you two would kiss. but, she looks at you up and down while the feeling of giddyness is jumping in her stomach, which she figures is from the lack of appetite at lunch earlier today.
“tell you what, y/n, how about we make a bet?”
you roll your eyes, crossing your arms to hear what the taller has to say. (while trying to ignore the lack of space you two have)
“whoever becomes class president is considered the brightest one.”
you’d rather accept jungwon’s love confession than run up against minji.
however, knowing how much it’d feel seeing the girl’s face falter once ms. ahn announces you as the winner doesn’t sound bad at all. and on the plus side, maybe there will be a cute girl to be vice president after all.
“deal.” you smirk in response.
minji’s eyes gazes down at your lips for .5 seconds before widening her eyes and backing away. “i-um have to go now.”
she brushes through her hair with her hand, rushing out the library while feeling her cheeks heat up.
“…ok..?” you blankly says, shrugging as you sit back down in the seat you were in before.
Tumblr media
minji pushes all her workbooks into her backpack, throwing her pencil bag in after before she stretches out the stiff muscles from sitting at her desk for too long of the late night cramming school. she can’t wait to go home and get into bed, especially when her stomach still feels weird from you.
“i’m going to get going now.” minji bids goodbye to some of the other students who are still trying to get caught up with other subjects.
she earns a chorus of ‘bye’s’ and ‘see you tomorrow’, prompting her to scoot her chair in under her desk and slinging her backpack on. while walking to the door, she passes by your desk and wondered why you left earlier than usual.
‘it’s not like i care.’ she rolls her eyes at how careless you were for leaving behind some trash on your desk.
like the good student she is, she sighs, picking up the trash and taking it with her to throw out on the way home. carefully opening the door to not disrupt the others, she’s relieved to know that she finished her schoolwork duties for the night and can just head straight for bed once getting home.
clutching on her backpack’s straps, she rushes to leave the school until she stops at the sight of you sitting on the bench of the playground across from school where many children would play at, no matter how dark it was getting.
minji observes the way your charming face looks ethereal under the street lights, she feels the way her chest get tight all of sudden when you reposition your sitting position hence causing your side profile to be seen. looking down at your hands, she sees a milk box in your left and a math book in your right.
without realizing, a smile is tugged upon her lips at how hardworking you are.
“excuse me, noona?” a couple of young boys who looks about the ages of 8-10 comes up to you, having you put your book aside and smiling sweetly at the children.
why does minji feels like the whole entire pavement just got lit up from your smile? why does she like seeing your smile?
“is there anything you guys need help with?” you ask the little boys cheerfully.
one of the boys point at the tree. "our kite got stuck up there and we need help getting it down. is there any way you can help us, noona?"
you follow where the child's finger is pointing at, seeing a white kite sitting up in the tree looking lonely. truth be told, you couldn't reach it and yet you don't want to bring the children down.
"of course!" you nod, getting off from your seat and straightening out your skirt in case an accident happens like flashing some students at school.
the girl watching from the school's entrance feels herself getting wary about you. she doesn't want you to fall and end up breaking something. even the sight of you tip-toeing makes her cringe from the thought of falling.
minji knows that you'll end up getting the kite for the children though. you never give up! at least, in her mind.
she braces herself to run and catch you, seeing the way you start climbing up to grab the kite. her clutch on the backpack's straps are tighter and she feels her throat closing up in nervousness.
but hearing the boys cheering as you grab their kite brings her mind back to why you helped in the first place. seeing the way your smile perfectly paints across your lips as you brush your hair through with your hand, while handing the boys their kite makes her stomach flutter.
way worse than before.
kim minji isn't stupid, she knows what this means.
for the first time, minji realizes that she has a crush on somebody. not just anyone, you.

So after seeing your post about BES I finally started watching it and damn. DAMN. People saw Mizu and can’t understand why transmascs gravitate to this story???????? I’m pretty sure “using bandages to bind chest” is like one of THE TOP symbolic moves that transmascs gravitate to when it comes to our (admittedly lackluster) representation in media.
Also, I feel like a lot of people get really weird about the idea that a story about empowering women and a story that’s relatable to transmascs aren’t mutually exclusive. I won’t speak for everyone but personally I like stories like this that don’t shy away from representing people whose AGAB doesn’t align with their outward actions.
And! Personally! As a man who is East Asian living in the US and has a higher voice even after 5 years on T, characters like Mizu rekindle my hope that one day I’ll be able to pass as flawlessly as him lol. Characters like Mizu, Mulan, Haruhi (from ouran high school host club) always seem to spark that little bit of hope in me… that maybe one day I won’t have to try so hard to be accepted and people will just see me and assume I’m a boy without me having to correct them… or at the very least, that they’d refrain from using any gendered language towards me until they ask and find out what I want to be referred as.
Oh for sure. It's like the Mulan thing. Like I'm sorry but you put "when will my reflection show who I am inside" and "who is that girl" and "why is my reflection a stranger" and you're mad that trans guys went "wow where'd you get that picture of me" like??? In a deleted scene, Mizu tries to play with her feminity in the mirror at the brothel and ultimately scowls and doesn't like what she sees- and you're trying to tell me that it's *not* supposed to be relateable to trans mascs trying to be feminine women and hating what they see reflected back at them?
Like you said, it's not that I'm mad that this is a story about empowering women and featuring a highly GNC woman as its main character. It's just annoying, and more importantly highly concerning, that people seem to think that because it's about empowering masculine women that trans mascs can't or shouldn't see any of themselves in it. I'm an entire grownass binary trans man and throughout my entire life I have felt more seen and more fellowship with masculine women both fictional and real than I have with anyone else except specific gay cis men who were very gender themselves.
And yeah. As your existence proves, it's not like East Asian trans mascs aren't real??? Like I'm sure there's nuance there that I'm missing because despite being biracial I'm not Asian and *definitely* not Japanese. But acting like characters like Haruhi, or Mizu, or Mulan [Chinese] *can't* be trans mascs because that'a inherently disrespectful to East Asian women is just plain erasing the fact that, um, Japanese and Korean and Chinese and Thai and Vietnamese and more trans mascs absolutely do exist and have existed as long as gender has existed.

Vietnamese Cultural Dress
The Ao Dai and Non La, the 2 most singinficant dresses of Vietnamese Culture
The cultural dress of Vietnam is called Ao Dai, meaning "long top". It has been a part of Vietnamese culture since 1774, when it was ordered by Vo Vuong and made mandatory to wear by the Nguyen government. The women wear a long tunic which is long-sleeved, has a high neckline and slits cut down to the waist. It is paired with comfortable trousers, usually white or black in colour. Men also wear the same thing, except that their tunic is shorter than that of a woman's and not slitted. The dress is made up of cotton only, keeping in mind the weather conditions of the country. The colour of a woman's ao dai reflected their marital status as well. White colour was worn by young girls, pastel colour dress by unmarried and bright colours by married women. At present times, the colours do not really reflect what a woman's age/marital status is, because they wear any colour of their choice.
Ao dai is often paired with non la, the cultural hats in Vietnam. The cone-shaped hats are made up of palm leaves and provide shelter from both rain and sunlight.
Vietnamese traditional dress: insights and traditions
Vietnam is a country of diversity, with more than 50 ethnic groups and an array of mountainous and urban communities with a whole host of different traditions. The variety of Vietnamese traditional dress is therefore vast, with some prominent and subtle differences in various parts of the country.
Ao Dai
Tumblr media
This is one of the best-known pieces of Vietnamese traditional dress, most commonly worn by women. It consists of a long, fitted silk tunic worn over loose trousers. While young girls often wear white ao dai to reflect their purity, older girls who aren’t yet married tend to wear soft pastel colours. Rich and bright colours are usually worn by married women. The first version of the ao dai dates back to the 1740s, but the look of the ao dai today dates back to the 1930s, when a chicer version of the garment was designed, influenced by the French fashion houses. Men do wear ao dai too, but this is usually reserved for special occasions.
Ao Tu Than
Tumblr media
This four-piece dress was mostly worn by women in the north of Vietnam. It is largely obsolete now, but can still be seen worn at special festivals and events in Vietnam, such as Tet.
Ao Ba Ba
Tumblr media
This two-piece outfit is worn by both men and women. It’s more common in southern Vietnam, particularly around the Mekong Delta, and consists of a long-sleeved, buttoned silk shirt with a scooped neck and high splits from the bottom up on each side, worn with silk trousers.
Ao Gam
Tumblr media
This traditional outfit is worn by Vietnamese men at special occasions. Described as a brocade tunic, the material is thicker than the ao dai and other forms of traditional dress.
Conical Hat
Tumblr media
The conical hat (non la) is a common hat spotted in Vietnam. It originally had a practical use as it helped to keep the rain of peoples’ faces as they worked in rice paddies or in other outdoor jobs. It also helped protect the face from the strong sun. They’re made with natural local materials, usually bamboo, palm leaves or tree bark. The shape of the conical hats means they have even more practical uses than this, also used to carry shopping from the market or as a bowl to drink water from!
Ethnic dress
Tumblr media
Ethnic groups who live in the more remote hills, mountains and lowlands each have their own distinctive style of traditional dress. The origins of the different styles of dress are usually led by practical matters. For example, people who live in lowland regions often live in houses on stilts over the water. They tend to wear more practical trousers, but shirts have symbols inspired by their surroundings, such as forest flowers. People who live in the mountains tend to wear garments that are easy for working in the fields and traversing mountain passes. However, one thing all such traditional costumes have in common are bright colours and genuine creativity in terms of design.
Silk
Tumblr media
Vietnam is a country which produces a huge amount of silk. This tradition is rooted in history – King Ly Thai Tong was encouraging silk production in Vietnam as far back as the year 1,000 – in a drive to further Vietnam’s economic development. Continuing to this day, silk garments can now be found across Vietnam. As well as ao dai made from silk, many people also wear silk shirts and scarves. Interestingly, silk painting is another typical Vietnamese tradition.

Let's talk about that one token Vietnamese mission in Cyberpunk 2077. It's cultural appropriation.
How do you know this is cultural appropriation? Pretend the character is American. If the story still works in exactly the same way, then it's cultural appropriation: our culture never even mattered.
Culture is meant to be shared, but appropriating our culture without a sliver of understanding on what, and who we are, is just unethical. Lemme explain and it's gonna be a long post.
Mission Summary
So basically it's a cyberpsycho mission about 2 sisters who are reality show celebrities like the Kardashians and one of them turn cyberpsycho after a really horrible "prank" gone sour. One sister drugged the other, put her in a coma, besmirched her looks by giving her clownish implants, and steal her fiance after she was humiliated by that sister in the past due to a similar equally mean-spirited prank. The cyberpsycho found out and killed her sister, her husband, and a lot of people, including the crew, at their wedding. Everything is scripted except for the real deaths. The physical and mental damage done to them was also real.
Sounds kinda ok, typical American reality show and exploitation in the show business. All are good until you realize the sisters are Vietnamese.
Problem Checklist
Reality TV shows aren't that popular in Vietnam. We do have a few shows here and there, and all of them are concepts bought from America, for example, Next Top Model, Masked Singer, and The Voice. And you can see from those 3 most popular shows that they are talent shows, not family feud shows. Vietnamese people don't watch family feud reality shows, and tho we might know of the Kardashians for their scandals and makeup, we don't watch them. Generally, we don't really have that reality show culture here. This is a very American thing. Additionally, such anti-family values, hyper-individualism, and anti-tradition sentiments as of the Kardashians usually will get censored and denied by the government.
The whole story doesn't sound like anything I've ever heard in Vietnamese media or real-life stories. We have our fair share of family feuds and love drama tropes, but this is not it. We are a communal society as opposed to individualism. This means we tend to avoid direct conflicts and over-the-top gestures. Couple that with a high-context communication style, conflicts and solutions often come in the form of scheming, indirect influence, psychological warfare, long term, and done in a group. Not to say the thing in the mission never happened ever, but it's not typical of Vietnamese culture.
Sure, the characters are Vietnamese diaspora in the US so they are influenced by US culture. Even so, this is not a relatable story for the Vietnamese diaspora, there are a lot more relatable and impactful stories than this for the Vietnamese diaspora. More on that later.
"It's not typical Vietnamese means it subverts stereotypes and it's creative. This is a different view that you just don't understand because not all Vietnamese are the same!" It subverts so hard it's unrecognizable by a Vietnamese. Sure people's experiences are diverse and the Vietnamese people are diverse and there are a lot of interesting new ways to write our experiences. But this story is nothing really new, creative, or interesting? Sisters backstabbing each other and fighting over a man on a reality show for clouts and it backfires is just an American drama trope. You can see this trope on Mean Girls, the only 2 Vietnamese girls there is exactly like this, and the actresses doesn't even speak Vietnamese. Why not just write them as Americans? Because the fact that they are Vietnamese contributes nothing to the story. If anything, it feels degrading because Vietnamese people are turned into exploited laughing stock for the Americans.
Furthermore, it IS stereotypical. The name of the reality show is Saigon Sisters. It evokes the image of Saigon queens or Saigon call girls, ie. exploited sex workers in South Vietnam during the American Resistance War (aka Vietnam War as the American calls it) who serve the colonizers and the puppet government officials. Believe it or not, Vietnam is not that war-torn, colonized, underdeveloped, and humiliated state. We are a culturally rich country with thousands of years of history bravely fighting off all the superpowers in the world. We have skyscrapers, we have highways, and our cuisine is arguably one of the most diverse and delicious cuisines in the wort. So it's interesting the devs decided to go with a stereotypical name that carries a sense of misogyny and colonialism with it. I doubt this is a conscious choice to portray colonialism, considering all of my other points proving that they don't even know who we are.
They got the name wrong. There is no excuse for this. The sisters' names are Dao Hyunh and Linh Hyunh. The first names are correct, Đào (anglicized as Dao) is not a common name but it exists; Linh is a very common name. The last name Hyunh is wrong, Huỳnh (anglicized as Huynh) is the correct one.
In conclusion, if replacing the character's ethnicity with American does not affect the story in any way, this representation is incredibly bad. I really prefer they have not mention us in the first place.
What It Should Have Been?
First let's talk about the common themes in the stories of Vietnamese culture. I take inspiration from the presentation by a wonderful artist Stephani Soejono (ig @stephanisoejono) and others in Xiran Jay Zhao's compilation video essays of analysis did by South East Asian people on the movie Raya & The Last Dragon.
Strong communal aspect: clash of expectations from community to individual's dreams and passion, conflict avoidance, friendships and family relations.
Living close with nature and the philosophy of go with the flow: Unexpected things happen but adapt to the environment and situation, embracing the negative because its yin and yang to make balance.
Supernatural and Spirituality: Fated meetings, coincidences, the unchanging wheels of fates, spirits and demons, shamans and witches (who are not feared but respected), deities and saints. One of the most interesting worldbuilding aspects of Cyberpunk 2077 is the blurred line between Spirituality and Technology, so there could have been so much to explore here.
Based on the above mentioned, I can easily come up with many interesting, relatable and impactful stories
A person who acted disrespectful towards a family, religious beliefs or a Vietnamese shrine and got hexed to turn into a cyberpsycho. (You will hear stories of this everywhere in Vietnam)
Vietnamese Shaman got possessed by daemon from beyond the Wall.
Vietnamese immigrant struggling to adapt and survive in America and couldn't take the pressure anymore. (Just ask any immigrants)
Overachiever kid who are pressured by their parents to be perfect student and perfect citizen, they use implants to be more perfect and finally snaps under the pressure and become cyberpsycho (I can assure you, this actually happens a lot irl, source: I am one; also search for the case of Jennifer's Solution)
and so much more!
Conclusion
I know this is mission is quite passable and small compare to the grand scheme of things, but it can't help but pisses me off. Asian representation is already a rare thing and rarely done well in western sphere, let alone South East Asian, let alone Vietnamese representation. I'm not even gonna repeat the affect of misrepresentation and under-representation in the power dynamic between western superpowers and a small country like mine. I am not unfamiliar with how most countries especially in Europe and American sees us, they still think we are this fragile, poor, rural, colonized and war-torn country like 50 years ago. This is reflected in how we are portray in the few and far between instances in western media especially Hollywood. For a studio based in Poland, a country with a relative good relation with Vietnam and a large community of Vietnamese diaspora, this is a piss poor portrayal of our people.
The Vietnamese market is probably too small for you to even care, and it's true that most Vietnamese player doesn't even give a shit. But it does not mean no Vietnamese care, at least I know I do. And this is not a new phenomenon, this has been happening for forever in western media, and someone's gotta tell people about it.
Let's end this extremely long and angry post with some beautiful images of my country. On tumblr, you can find a lot more of beautiful images like these curated by the blog @lotusinjadewell. And I'll be creating a personal blog to post my photos I took of my home country soon so there!

NOTES: I used to write this as a scenario in Vietnamese before so when I received this request I got the same idea as the one I used to write about it. After all sorry for the late writing since I was too busy with my examination, though.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You left a long sigh when you looked around the aquarium again, with that action you easily caused yourself some attention. As the old man looked at your father’s age, he looked at you with a friendly smile on his face and he said.
“You don’t have to be so aware like that, [Last name]. Just enjoy the trip, we have Akutagawa brothers to handle everything for us.”
You looked at him with your narrow eyes, you couldn’t understand the reason why that person said that. Everything was going to be fine as ridiculous stories when it came to this situation. That old man looked at the expression on your face then chuckled.
“Just enjoy yourself, [Last name]. Please consider it just like a holiday trip, not a serious mission, you know. If Elise knows that you took this as a mission, she will never forgive me.”
“But Boss, please don’t say that, who will know what is going to happen when we put our guard down.”
You replied to him and your eyes started looking around again, Mori shook his head when he saw your action. It was true that he told you not to put down your guard but if you continued doing like this everybody will feel weird about you then they will start questioning about the group of yours. Mori couldn’t make it happen so he said.
“Why don’t you and Chuuya act like a normal couple and I am your parents?”
“H-Huh,” You blushed when you heard him saying, that made you slowly turn your head aside to look at the familiar figure standing beside you but his eyes were paying attention to the tank. You could see his gray eyes reflected from the glass of the tank, so stunning.
That was when you heard a girl's voice resound into your ears.
“Do you and Chuuya are lovers?”
You bowed your head down to look at the girl with blonde hair who was smiling when she shared her opinion. Her speech made your face turn into a tomato, but she still looked at you with a friendly smile on her face. You didn’t deny her saying so you nodded your head, that was when Elise continued saying.
“You two act like you two aren’t lovers at all.”
“W-Why do you say that…?”
You were blushing madly when Elise said that suddenly your eyes met Chuuya’s when you looked up at him. That was when the blonde girl covered her mouth up with her hand and smiled then she said.
“Please find out by yourself, [Last name]. Rintarou, look at that big shark.”
Elise pointed at the shark swimming on the top of her head and said. You were blushing so hard when she ended her conversation so fast like this so you reached your hand out to run and call for her.
“Miss Elise, please wai-”
You lost your balance and almost fell down, you didn’t know what to do when you closed your eyes waiting to be hit and hurt by the floor. And for a moment you realized you weren’t falling down anymore you slowly opened your eyes just to see Chuuya who was very worried about you and he asked.
“Are you alright, my candy?”
“I-I’m alright.”
You slowly escaped from his arms and said, you didn’t dare to look into Chuuya’s eyes because you had just made a big mistake. You heard him chuckling then said.
“Head up, my love.”
When you lifted your head up, you saw Chuuuya wrapped his arms around your neck. You stood there frozen when he did that, your hand grabbed your clothes tightly in your hand. After a minute, Chuuya put his arms down and brought the dolphin pendant on his neck and said.
“We have our matching bracelet now, is it beautiful?”
You raised your hand up to hold the dolphin pendant in your hand and smiled shyly then nodded your head. Chuuya laughed and wrapped his arm around your waist then continued guiding you, as you didn’t pay any attention Elise and Mori both looked at you two with a smile on their face.

3, 14, 20 for the books ask!!!
3. What were your top five books of the year?
OOOHHOHHHHH TOP FIVE IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER:
black bird blue road by safiya pasternack - mg low fantasy about a girl who drags her twin brother on a quest to the byzantine empire to cure his leprosy before it kills him. this takes place in a possibly-apocryphal jewish empire on the black sea circa 1000 ce and has some REALLY cool lovely worldbuilding wrt the western asian cultural scene
the hare with amber eyes by edmund de waal - (see post) - this came out like ten years ago and was a big deal when it came out - nonfiction art history tracing the object history of a collection of netsuke that came to the author through his eccentric gay uncle. GREAT read if you, like me, are particularly interested in the jewish intellectual scenes of pre-war odesa and vienna
the magic fish by trung le nguyen - insanely beautifully designed and illustrated mg graphic novel, 3 different takes on little mermaid/cinderella type fairytales through the lens of vietnamese immigrant art
i read a lot of pg wodehouse jeeves books of which i don't really have a favorite but they were all delightful
CAN CI PIN THE DEFECTIVES BY PRIEST !!!!!!!!!!!! READ CAN CI PIN BY PRIEST. RACHEL I KNOW YOUVE READ CAN CI PIN BY PRIEST BUT FOR EVERYONE ELSE: read can ci pin for a space opera about the role of technology in sacrificing freedom in exchange for comfort; the importance of play; some crazy insanely good character and relationship development; a deeply charming bad handjob; lin jingheng (handsome)
14. What books do you want to finish before the year is over?
right now i'm reading julia child's memoir my life in france, which i will probably finish in the next two business days (i read at work), and both freya marske's a power unbound and david bowles's the prince and the coyote are about 2 weeks out for me on libby! ALSO lianzi wants me to read yuwu but i probably won't FINISH reading it by the end of the year. but ill probably get around to both of the other two before january
20. What was your most anticipated release? Did it meet your expectations?
ooohhh... i was really looking forward to yellowface (MET) and witch king (in some ways met - it DEFINITELY wants a sequel and for now hurts for want of one)

you know those 6 characters that inspired your character memes... I wanted to do one with Flower bc I finally actually thought of some and anyway
Tumblr media
explanations and stuff under the cut this is gonna be a whole lot of rambling
top right- 2-D. obvious. that's her dad!
top left- Angelica (asmr artist) she's known for her chaotic and often political asmrs- mostly extremely specific and weird and disturbing and they're GREAT. she changes her style up a lot which Flower does too actually. then Princess Daisy is cocky and still feminine and that's a lot like Flower
middle right- the girl from scooby doo was mostly the hippie influence bc I saw her as a kid and it changed my brain chemistry- then Sydney Pot is less of an inspiration and more "everyone knows this, I wanna do the opposite of this" (like instead of "aww 2-D has this cute baby who loves him" it's "this girl fucking hates her dad" (NOTHING WRONG WITH SYDNEY I just like to cover ground that I don't see covered))
middle left- Melanie Martinez is mostly for a lot of the political views and weed smoking and the making of weird art. then with Moana it was kinda like "well I can't think of many polynesian characters. pretty much just Moana. there should be more. Flower shall be that" I think that might be where Flower's tie to the ocean might come from actually. I'll get back to this in a second
bottom right- real life old friend- this friend was mixed and she was Honduran and Polynesian and she really wanted to see more representation for those groups, so when I make characters I try to keep that in mind. same with Y2K actually- I had a Vietnamese friend that said something about Miraculous Ladybug- I don't remember if it was "this is one of the only representations I have" or "I love this show and it doesn't have representation" bc this conversation was like. a decade ago at this point probably but I also try to keep in my mind to make Vietnamese characters because of that
bottom left- Lilo- I LOVE LILO she's probably where a lot of the autism comes from (besides 2-D) and she's just so weird (positive) like she bites people and tries to do magic on her friends to punish them. and also, Billie Eilish is where a lot of the posession imagery comes from
and as a reflection- a lot of these people are Hispanic or Indigenous American in some way- so I wonder if she should also be Hispanic or Indigenous American... I'll have to study that kind of stuff and incorporate it for the future I think- and also a lot of these characters have gapped teeth or missing teeth. I should incorporate that too- then not to mention a lot of the outfit inspiration can't be attributed to specific individuals but is probably the most impactful- and also I'm sure I forgot some pretty big inspirations but ah well ill live

Let’s pretend we’re casting another movie:
The role is for a 22 year old ethnically Jewish girl. In the globally known and beloved book that they’re adapting the movie from, the character (Miriam) is described as having some stereotypical Jewish features, but the producers said those aren’t required and are potentially open to other looks.
The rest of the cast has been locked down. The internet is screaming, crying, and throwing up from happiness that the casting team worked so hard to make sure that Connor (who’s canonically Vietnamese) is being played by an actor who really is Vietnamese! He just finished two huge Netflix movies and we got him! Plus, Lola (canonically from Greece), Beck (canonically African-American and nonbinary), and Arjun (canonically half-Indian and half-Pakistani) really are all being played by actors who have the exact same backgrounds as their characters!! And, they’ll all super well known too, each of them has been in numerous films and television shows!!
Now, you’ve narrowed down your candidates for Miriam and want to have the director meet with your top choice.
Her name is Rebecca, she’s incredibly talented, smart, nice. She just came off a long running TV series and next year will start starring in another. She’s a hot commodity. Only thing is she’s not Jewish. Her fans online said she’s half-Jewish, but based on overwhelming information we could find, that was determined to be highly untrue and a case of mistake identity with an actress of a similar name. If there ever was some distant Jewish heritage then she has no connection with those roots. In fact, she shared a rather lukewarm post about being an ally to the Jewish community, along with both sides of her family being in a group that believes all Jews need to be saved— she even volunteered with that group for years, it’s in interviews online. There are also dozen of pictures of her celebrating Christian holidays. It’s clear that she does not consider herself Jewish religiously/ethnically/culturally, but the team really likes her and we reached out to her agent directly because we wanted her…
Does it matter that she’s not Jewish? Would it be bad if we just change the role so it never talks about her being of the Jewish ethnicity in the movie, even though she was in the book and millions of people have seen it? We could’ve tried an open call or reaching out to more agents with clients that fit the role, but Rebecca is big and getting bigger! Seriously, can’t we just erase that Miriam was originally Jewish?

Life is Beautiful (Miles Miller x Reader)
Tumblr media
Summary: Every Artist has his or her muse
Everybody who knew your husband, knew that he had a creative mind that no one else could ever really match. Every day it seemed like his hands were drawing something new whether it was with pencils, pens, charcoal sticks or block crayons he had made from beeswax.
You saw for yourself one day just how deep his artistic mind went, when you and him were going through old sketchbooks he had stowed away since he was in middle school. You were amazed at how well he could draw, the pages filled with colorful landscapes, still-lifes of animals in their natural habitat or at the Indianapolis zoo. Your favorite had been one he had secretly done as Otis and Kathy danced away on the front porch of their old house, each and every motion captured so perfectly, you thought for sure they would dance right off the page.
Another favorite of yours had been the circus performers, each one more lifelike than the last. You could almost see it jumping right off the pages, every animal, dancer, stunt artist and performer in the midst of an act that almost moved you to tears. It was so perfect, so innocent and full of wonder that you wished there had been a story to go with it.
Yet when you opened the next set, you were saddened by much of what you saw. Black and white sketches of soldiers, Vietnamese civilians, some with children and others who were elderly, war weary medics who had just about had enough and one of a little Hmong girl who had been so eager to show Miles her new school dress.
“Not even three days later, the communists came through and raided the village,” Miles explained sadly. “Only the children in the village survived, including her.”
You were once again near to tears the more you looked through the sketchbooks labeled “Vietnam: ‘66-68″. Miles told you every story he could remember, his chin wobbling, his voice quavering and his eyes stinging with tears as he recalled those frightening two years. By the time you went through them all, you were holding each other, the both of you a sobbing mess, but forever grateful that the two of you had come together in the years during and after.
You both rifled through more, many of them from the land that Otis and Kathy owned just outside of Bozeman. You were once again in awe of Miles’s pictures of cowboys, Native Americans, birds and animals all native to the Yellowstone region. Your favorite out of that bunch had been the portrait of Otis astride a horse, his eyes shielded by the black cowboy hat on his head and ready to rope in a bull.
Miles hadn’t had the opportunity to show or tell you just yet about his latest creations. He desperately wanted it to be a surprise and to see the look on your face when it was all done.
That spring and summer he watched you, very carefully trying to add in the little details that only his eyes could see. He smiled as you looked out into the grassy meadow, the summer air hot but comfortable, the skirts of your sundress swaying against your knees. You sat perched comfortably on a flat topped rock, caressing your bump which seemed to grow bigger and bigger with every day that passed. You couldn’t see it from the distance, but the expression of pure love on Miles’s face at that very moment would have had you swooning.
The very next day, when you walked into the finished room that would eventually become Benny’s, you gasped. All of the pictures of the forest animals and the circus pictures, had been framed and hung on the walls thanks to Miles and your father-in-law. You would have fainted had Miles not been there to keep you steady on your already wobbly feet.
It’s not long before a new set of sketchbooks and watercolor books are filled with images of you and Benny, you his beautiful mother, and Miles all holding him, kissing his cheeks or the precious little baby asleep in his crib. Even as he grows and starts walking, running and babbling, Miles never fails to create these beautiful images with his own hand.
And it’s in this way that he knows, despite all he’s been through, that life is still beautiful.

Oooh a another black media thing I’m going to loathe
https://x.com/copicsquiddo/status/1779351205728153939?s=46
And y’all excited for Yasuke in red
Also the Huey freeman comparison
The thing is that Huey is named after a black panther party
And he radical but toned down
Also the ititis thing the girl referenced, ooooh shitty good times writers
THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A METAPHOR OF THE CRACK EPIDEMIC AS THE FAT WHITE GUY IN BOONDOCKS WAS A STAND IN FOR REGEAN
Also another gag was that black peoples complain white people be killing us…why we eat some of the most unhealthy shit possibly as well
Getting better, my depress ass unfortunately gave my ass diabetes
Also I learn that Boondocks creator got kicked out of the entertainment industry which explains season 4 of boondocks
https://x.com/copicsquiddo/status/1779385348277100948?s=46
But here running gag, you guys complain how white people and the government attack us…while keeping in the crab in the bucket mentality where you guys cling onto the godforsaken projects and inner city culture?
Tbh I think Asians became enemy #1 because despite them (especially the Koreans, Japanese, and Vietnamese) having a lot of significant discrimination especially with the culture shock/clashes we had with them. They are able to thrive in America
But blacks are still fucked in a post Obama world?
There a reason why plenty of whites (and blacks) like me avoid modern black media
Tumblr media
Also the Huey freeman comparison The thing is that Huey is named after a black panther party And he radical but toned down
Huey was a drag at times, but he was also a great vehicle for driving points home as a result of that.
Flipping out on the community for letting r kelly slide is one of my fav moments.
Also the ititis thing the girl referenced, ooooh shitty good times writers THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A METAPHOR OF THE CRACK EPIDEMIC AS THE FAT WHITE GUY IN BOONDOCKS WAS A STAND IN FOR REGEAN
That I did not know, but I never watched the show so that's my excuse there.
Also another gag was that black peoples complain white people be killing us…why we eat some of the most unhealthy shit possibly as well Getting better, my depress ass unfortunately gave my ass diabetes
Like I said, vehicle for uncomfortable truths.
Also I learn that Boondocks creator got kicked out of the entertainment industry which explains season 4 of boondocks
Tumblr media
Did not know that one either, on top of the smugness if you complain about the issues with some of these shows you get called racist or if you're black 'anti black' or any of a multitude of other insults that add up to you being called white.
But here running gag, you guys complain how white people and the government attack us…while keeping in the crab in the bucket mentality where you guys cling onto the godforsaken projects and inner city culture?
Ya, be why one of my pet peeves is the whole you'll need to work 3 times as hard as these other people to attain their level of success, it's self defeating and just serve to make people not try.
Tbh I think Asians became enemy #1 because despite them (especially the Koreans, Japanese, and Vietnamese) having a lot of significant discrimination especially with the culture shock/clashes we had with them. They are able to thrive in America
They kept pushing on even if there was discrimination, be one of the reasons as a demographic they're doing as well in the US as they are at least.
But blacks are still fucked in a post Obama world? There a reason why plenty of whites (and blacks) like me avoid modern black media
I avoid it because I don't like being blamed for problems I had nothing to do with and that's what a lot of it boils down to these days.
It gets really old really fast and the constant push has finally gone far enough to generate a response, which would be why if you look around different programs that benefit specific demographics are getting sued for violating the civil rights act.
Federal program for farmers that pretty much excluded white people got sued and some scholarship programs got the same treatment, bunch of other stuff too.
A lot of these things have been round for a while and nobody bothered with them till someone got fed up and decided to actually do something.

I'M JUST A HAPPY GUY
Dude dead end: paranormal park brings me so much joy. Like there's just casual representation that's still part of the plot and matters.
Like Barney being a canon Jewish, trans, gay man who is also fat/plus sized (and him being plus sized be genetic too), his boyfriend being Vietnamese, and talking about how hard it is for him to tell his family that he's gay. THE FUCKING MAIN LIKE ANTAGONIST FOR SEASON 1 WAS A GIRL BOSS AND BEING VOICED BY A DRAG QUEEN. on top of it barney talking about binding and how awkward it feels being fat and at the gym.
not to mention Norma. I see so much of myself in Norma, like soo much. She's canonically autistic on top of being a woman of color, and bisexual. that's fucking huge representation. also, Ms. Khan(Swati) being supportive of Norma is just so amazing. you don't understand how much I cried because of that. I'm genuinely so happy we got of representation of a super supportive south Asian parent. I don't even have that. and then her having a crush on Badyah and experiencing that rejection (as much as I'd absolutely love being able to see a sapphic Hajabi because we never get this). How every relationship is handled so healthily or reaching a healthy compromise. Barney and Logs having a super healthy relationship, Norma communicating that she needs space after getting rejected by Badyah.
ALSO BARNEY AND LOGS BEING AN INTERRACIAL GAY COUPLE JUST PURE JOY FROM ME.
Basically, just all the representation we get from it brings me so much joy. I've never in my life gotten to see characters like me. Characters scared to come out to families who are Asian, characters who are south Asian women and love other women, characters who are plus-sized and ok with it, characters who wear a hijab and still just do the same things everyone else does. I just love Dead End and i always will. its representation made for the people it's representing and not representation made for our oppressors.
OH AND FINAL NOTE: barney being open about having a therapist and making jokes about needing to call his therapist after scary shit happening to him
