The Disturbing Case of Pekka-Eric Auvinen
Plus an interesting comment by sagamaraia:
When Jokela happened, I was working in IRC-Galleria, back then a hugely popular social media platform in Finland. Pekka-Eric had a profile too and also posted his manifesto onto its blog. We were quickly following the real time events through IRC (Internet Relay Chat) and I remember how someone had hid into the bathroom at Jokela school and texted their loved ones (which were also related to IRC) how scared they were and what sounds they were hearing. It was very quiet, apparently. As we found out the identity of this assailant, we immediately contacted the police and told them everything we knew. We hid his profile and the manifesto so it wouldn't be visible for anyone and especially the press, as we understood also the family of this man have to be protected. Police didn't know a lot about the case yet, they only knew some rumours and had received some calls from the school. Maybe. I have no real knowledge of that. But we ended up speeding up the investigation quite a bit and within just an hour or so after it had started. Pekka knew Finnish police would not hesitate to come after him and he seemed to lack a real concrete plan, so the whole thing was over fast. Afterwards we held crisis chats to young kids at IRC-Galleria and kids all over Finland were scared to go to school. I was sitting in trauma chats for a week before the first shock was over and after that week it was us moderators that had to start working with our thoughts. It's never an easy task to take down profiles of the deceased. Not in the case of Jokela, not with Kauhajoki, not with Konginkangas accident or the Tsunami in Phuket. It's hard. That is the one thing that I think should be important to know about this thing: social media was in key part in all things related to this event. It was the place for Pekka to get his thoughts through, and it was the thing that gave police a suspect within an hour after first calls for help, while people were still terrorized by a mad gunman. And it has since been the place which stores his manifesto and lets it be an influence to copycats. I has been a place for healing, it has been a place for helping others heal and it continues to be all this to everyone willing to listen. In good, and in bad.

OTD in Music History: Jean Sibelius (1865 - 1957) dies peacefully at his iconic home (named "Ainola" after his beloved wife Aino) in Järvenpää, Finland, a few weeks shy of his 92nd birthday. One of the greatest musical nationalists of the 20th Century, Sibelius remains a Finnish cultural icon who is widely recognized as one of the most important symphonists of the modern era. Sibelius’s international fame can be traced back to the tremendous success of his ever-popular tone poem "Finlandia" in 1899, and his stature only continued to grow during the next decade. His good friend Ferruccio Busoni (1866 - 1923) premiered his 2nd Symphony in Berlin in 1901, and noted British composer Granville Bantock (1868 - 1946) commissioned his 3rd Symphony in 1907. The justly-famous Violin Concerto (1903) also dates from this early period, although Sibelius didn’t published what are arguably his finest works -- the 5th Symphony (1919), the 6th Symphony (1923), the 7th Symphony (1924), and the tone poem "Tapiola" (1925) -- until after World War I. But then came the silence. For the last 30 years of his life, Sibelius suffered from one of the most monumental writers' blocks in musical history. He produced next to nothing, although rumors (some stoked by Sibelius himself) continued to swirl that he was preparing an 8th symphony. According to his wife, one day in the mid-1940s, the elderly Sibelius got drunk and then sat down and burned a tremendous amount of manuscript material in the fireplace at Aino -- and that was that. He apparently found this bonfire to be cathartic, and no substantial manuscripts were found after his death a decade later… PICTURED: A c. 1950's headshot photograph of Sibelius, which he has signed and inscribed "An das Sinfonie-Orchester des N.W.D.R. in Dankbarkeit." (The North West German Radio Symphony Orchestra was a radio orchestra founded by British occupation authorities after World War II.)
This historic clip shows Jean Sibelius at his home, Ainola. The first moving images of Jean Sibelius dates from the spring of 1927, when he was filmed at Ainola by the Finnish cinematographers Heikki Aho and Björn Soldan. Aho and Soldan were the sons of the noveliest Juhani Aho, and had grown up in the close vicinity of Sibelius and his family. In the 1927 film, we see an urbane and relaxed Sibelius on the Lake Tuusula road. The images are striking: in his bowler hat, the composer has a casual, Anglo-Saxon air which differs from later portrayals of the Karsh-ian Sibelius as the brooding and forbidding musical titan. The documentary also provides intimate glimpses of family life at Ainola: we see a happy Aino in the role of home-maker and her daughters picking apples in the garden (one runs up the path that would eventually lead to Sibelius's final resting place). Their father reads the newspaper and contentedly puffs on his cigar. In one scene, Soldan's camera catches the composer at work at the piano; another shows his daughter Margareta playing a violin solo, caught against the light filtering through a window. In 1945, shortly before his 80th birthday, Sibelius agreed to be filmed again by a Finnish film team. This time, Aho and Soldan show us a very different Sibelius, the aged composer watching the forests, cranes and lakes, full of autumnal nostalgia.

Pekka-Eric Auvinen
Tumblr media
ℑ𝔫𝔱𝔯𝔬𝔡𝔲𝔠𝔱𝔦𝔬𝔫 The Jokela school shooting occurred on 7 November 2007, at Jokela High School in the town of Jokela, Tuusula, Finland. The gunman, 18-year old Pekka-Eric Auvinen, entered the school that morning armed with a semi-automatic pistol. He killed eight people and wounded one person in the toe before shooting himself in the head; twelve others were also injured by flying glass or sprained ankles. Auvinen died later that evening in a Helsinki hospital. This was the second school shooting in the history of Finland. The previous incident occurred in 1989 at the Raumanmeri school in Rauma, when a 14-year-old fatally shot two fellow students. Less than one year after the Jokela school massacre, the Kauhajoki school shooting occurred, which is thought to have been heavily inspired by Auvinen.
𝔅𝔞𝔠𝔨𝔤𝔯𝔬𝔲𝔫𝔡 Auvinen reportedly came from a stable family that included his parents and a younger brother. There were no major conflicts reported in the family, no violence, and no substance abuse. The parents did have concern about the violent content in some of the video games he played, and intervened by confiscating and selling those games with excessive violence. The family had lived in their home for over ten years. Auvinen progressed normally in school, had friends, and had no criminal record. As he moved through adolescence, however, his friends became fewer and his school performance declined. The official report stated that in the upper grades he had no friends,4 though elsewhere in the same report it is noted that Auvinen talked to his friends about shooting and buying a gun. There are reports that he had been bullied at school, as well as reports that he had not been bullied. Nonetheless, the official report indicates that at least verbal harassment did occur: This was probably because he dressed more neatly than others, he expressed his extreme opinions vociferously, and his interests were generally different from those of other youngsters. He was also bullied for his insecurity and involuntary blushing. What interests and opinions might have resulted in harassment? Auvinen was fascinated by school shootings in the U.S. and discussed Columbine and other rampage attacks at home, school, and online. He admired the Unabomber and believed that violence was an acceptable method of solving problems.  Auvinen’s comments indicated his admiration for school shooters and the possibility that he would carry out a rampage attack. Auvinen apparently was influenced by a Finnish ecologist, Pentti Linkola, whose writings address the issue of overpopulation. Linkola is well-known in Finland for his extreme views, and Auvinen made a video tribute to him in which he included the following quotes from Linkola: “A minority can never have any other effective means to influence the course of matters but through the use of violence,” and “I wish that death to mankind comes soon.”  By the age of 16, Auvinen had significant social difficulties. In April 2006, he began taking medication for panic disorder and social anxiety. By the fall of 2007, he had discontinued the medication. He was not under the influence of the medication (or any other substances) at the time of the attack. In 2007 Auvinen had his military call-up examination: “His fitness classification was E for mental health reasons, which would have meant deferment for three years.”He reportedly did not mention his depression or suicidal thoughts. It is not known why he was deferred.
𝔈𝔳𝔢𝔫𝔱𝔰 𝔏𝔢𝔞𝔡𝔦𝔫𝔤 𝔘𝔭 𝔱𝔬 𝔱𝔥𝔢 𝔄𝔱𝔱𝔞𝔠𝔨 According to his diary, Auvinen had been planning his attack since March 2007. Also, “he wrote an entry in his diary in which he said he was going to initiate an operation against humanity with the purpose of killing as many people as possible.” His parents reported that in the months preceding the attack, Auvinen’s grades declined, he increasingly isolated himself in his room, and he spent much of his time on the computer. His mother noted that Auvinen seemed to become even more fearful of social situations in the summer of 2007, even something routine like applying for a job. A peer noticed that he was acting strangely and that “he withdrew into his shell.” In August 2007, other youngsters noticed that his behaviour had become unusual and told a youth worker about their concern. This youth worker received similar reports from several young people up to the end of October 2007. The perpetrator behaved threateningly toward other youngsters, saying that they would die as a result of a white revolution. In the summer of 2007, he became involved with an online girlfriend. When she found a new boyfriend in the fall, Auvinen became verbally aggressive and insulting comments were exchanged among Auvinen, the young woman, and her new boyfriend. Interestingly, the night before his attack, Auvinen apologized for his behavior.Auvinen was very active with online activities, including posting videos. His videos often celebrated school shootings. In addition, some of them included “sadomasochistic sexual fantasies. This material included: violent pornographic video clips and fantasies of near-rape ... The videos portray innocent-looking nude or semi-nude women helplessly bound, gagged, and struggling to get away. These pictures are coupled with his fantasies of abducting women and forcing them to submit to his will. Auvinen commented in one of his videos that women “are cheating whores, lying sluts and manipulative bitches. They are best when they are dominated, bound & gagged.” Auvinen did not apply for a firearm permit until October 2007. He was initially denied because the caliber of the weapon he wanted was considered too powerful for target practice (the reason he gave for wanting a gun). His second application was for a smaller caliber weapon, and this was approved on 19 October. He did not purchase the weapon until 2 November, just five days before his rampage. He appears to have only practiced with it once, making a video of himself shooting. He uploaded this video to the Internet. He had talked to peers about shooting and buying a gun, but his family was not aware that he had purchased a firearm. In the months leading up to the attack, Auvinen posted multiple videos online, including ones about Hitler / Nazis and the Columbine killers, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold.  His peers reported that he spoke obsessively about his gun. They also observed that he had been acting strangely and seemed more withdrawn and perhaps depressed. Though Auvinen committed his rampage at his school, he had considered other sites for his attack. According to one source, Auvinen posted online “that he might commit a spree killing in the Finnish parliament because of the corrupt nature of politicians.” It was also reported that he “even considered going on a shooting rampage in a shopping centre but thought  that school would be better because shooting in a school would give him more public attention.” These comments show that he had no particular rage directed at the people in his school. Though he had been bulliedduring his school years, he did not frame his attack as revenge for bullying. The fact that he considered attacking politicians in parliament or random people at a shopping center shows that he had no particular focus for his attack. A moving moment coming here to Lake Tuusula near Sibelius’ house in Ainola, Finland. A day spent at the great composer’s house, visiting his grave and seeing the room where so many of his works were written. The lake pulled out all the stops today, showing Finland in all its late summer beauty. "krótki film o zabijaniu - Pekka Eric Auvinen
                              Rozdział I – ‘’Szkoła”
W szkole Auvinen radził sobie umiarkowanie i chciał ukończyć szkołę następnej wiosny. Był on cichym, spokojnym uczniem nie sprawiających dotąd żadnych problemów wychowawczych. Z powodu nieśmiałości i odmiennych zainteresowaniach Pekka był prześladowany w szkole. Miał jednak kilku przyjaciół  ,którzy uważali go za całkiem szczęśliwego człowieka.
W opisie napisał: „ Jestem cynicznym egzystencjalistą, antyludzkim humanistą,antyspołecznym socjaldarwinistą,realistycznym idealistą i bogobojnym ateistą”. Uważał  że, reszta ludzi jest zbyt arogancka i ograniczona umysłowo by go zrozumieć.
Miał 53 subskrybentów i uzbierał 14 029 wyświetleń.
Rozdział IV – „Plan i Przebieg zamachu na szkołę Jokela High School”.
Nastolatek należał do klubu strzeleckiego , 19.10.2007 dostał on  pozwolenie na broń .
Następnie sprawca wszedł do szkolnej toalety. Byli to Ville Heinonen lat 16 i Mikku Hiltunen lat 17. Po ogłoszeniu komunikatu, Auvinen oddał kilka strzałów w korytarzu i krzyknął: „Zabiję was wszystkich!” Zażądał, by go wpuszczono, gdy spotkał się z odmową, strzelił kilka razy w szklaną szybę  w drzwiach i uderzył w kilka krzeseł. Miało to miejsce o godzinie 11:57. Przewieziono go do  Centralnego Szpitala Uniwersyteckiego w Helsinkach i o godz.22.15 Pekka Eric Auvinen zmarł .
