Home For The Summer
Intro: Hey guys! Its been a hot minute since I've posted an actual story on here, I've been having severe writers block and have been going through a lot recently, but I managed to make some time and write something, I hope y'all enjoy! And thank you to @wokeupinawalnut for the assistance in creating this :) love you <3
Summary: Melissa is your mom's best friend, she's become someone you looked up to and could come to for anything, what happens when feelings start to change and your mother turns ruthless?
Warnings: Potential trigger for alcoholism, verbally abusive behavior, reader is 23/24 by the end(let me know if I missed any)
Word Count: 3k
Tumblr media
You had known Melissa since you were thirteen, your mother had brought her over after a long day at the school, the two of them having become friends earlier that year when you and your mother had moved here after your mother divorced your dad, who was no longer in the picture, getting the second grade teaching position at Abbott. Melissa had then become someone you looked up to and could confide in when your mother wasn’t around to listen, which happened more and more the older you got.
When you turned seventeen, you started seeing Melissa in a different light, you started to feel things for the other woman that you knew wasn’t right to feel when it came to your mother’s best friend, but you couldn’t help yourself, you found your gaze on her everytime she was around, quickly averting your gaze when you saw her turn your way, you figured this was just one of those stupid crushes, hell you hadn’t even been on a date yourself, no one interested you enough to get that far.
You had hoped that going away for college would change your feelings for the fiery redhead, getting a decent scholarship to Stanford for their medical school, ever since you were given the opportunity to volunteer at the local hospital, you had your heart set on becoming a doctor so when the opportunity appeared, you took it with no hesitation and immediately accepted the offer you had received.
The day you left, your mother was supposed to drop you off at the airport and see you off, but instead you had to call Melissa last minute when your mother told you she was unable to, grateful that she agreed with no hesitation, loading your bags into the bed of her truck before climbing into the passengers seat, you a bundle of nerves and not just from flying away for school.
The ride was silent aside from the quiet music playing through the trucks speakers “You doing alright over there, kid?” Melissa asked, lightly nudging you with her elbow and causing you to jump slightly, having been lost in your thoughts and looking at her after a moment, furrowing your brows before sighing “Nervous and a little upset that my mom isn’t willing to take the time to see her only child off” you admitted, wringing your hands out in your lap, freezing when she rested a hand on one of yours “It’s her loss, you’re gonna do amazing, I know it might not mean much coming from me, but I’m very proud of the person you’ve become and who you’re going to be, kid” she said, squeezing your hand and you felt tears building in your eyes as your stomach flipped and your heart pounded, the praise making you feel lighter “Thank you”.
When you got to the airport, you expected Melissa to just drop you off at your terminal but she took the turn for the parking garage instead, her taking you the whole way through until she couldn’t follow you anymore “C’mere” she said, pulling you into a tight hug and rubbing your back as you buried your face in her neck “Let me know when you land, I’m gonna miss you so much” she said, giving you one last squeeze before pulling away “I will, I’ll miss you more… Thank you” you smiled, squeezing her hands which you were still holding before turning and heading through security, heading for the next phase of your life.
xxxxx
Little did you know that Covid would hit and hinder any and all travel plans you had, keeping you trapped in California to the point you just never visited, not like your mother cared, you were lucky to get a message from her a day, let alone a phone call, you finally found time during your fifth year, you finally had a small break in classes that you were able to come home for the summer, you still kept in touch with everyone, especially Melissa whose been with you through it all, the nights you were stressed out from all the studying? She was a phone call or facetime away, when you were excited about something that just happened? She was there, as the years went by though, you felt something change between the two of you, she seemed to be more flirty when it came to talking to you, but maybe you were overthinking it all and your brain was twisting what was really happening.
I just landed - You
Just found a parking spot, I’ll see you shortly ;) - Mel
You stumbled slightly when you saw the emoji she chose to use, why would she use that one? Was she trying to hint at something? Here you go again, overthinking, she didn’t mean anything by it, you heading for the baggage claim and waiting for your bag to come on the conveyor, fixing your mask as you scrolled through your phone, you didn’t trust planes when it came to this virus, so you’d rather be safe than sorry, you glanced up when you caught a glimpse of what seemed to be your bag, barely able to set it on the ground before you felt arms wrap around you, causing you to tense before you saw the red hair and smelled her usual perfume, turning in her grasp to return the hug just as tightly.
“I can’t believe you’re home” Melissa said softly, pulling back and cupping your face as to get a better look at you, your heart stuttering before you rested your hand on one of hers, lightly leaning into her touch and missing the flash of adoration in her gaze as you closed your eyes “I’ve missed you” you said softly, looking at her once more before you took a step back and grabbed your suitcase, her still holding your hand as she led you through the airport “I missed you more, your mother has been getting on my nerves without you there for buffer” she laughed, glancing back at you and smiling when you let out a giggle “Not surprising, she doesn’t have me to annoy”.
The drive to your mothers house was quiet, the familiarity of the ride calming as she drove you guys through the busy city “You hungry? That sandwich shop is on the way” Melissa said, breaking the silence as she glanced over at you, catching the smile that appeared on your face at the suggestion “When do I ever say no to that place?” You laughed, throwing her a grin before you relaxed back in the passengers seat, feeling more at home than you have in a while.
When you finally got into your mothers house, it felt different, everything was moved around, it didn’t look like the house you had finished growing up in “About a year after you left, she did a whole renovation of the place” Melissa told you as she followed behind you with your suitcase that she insisted on bringing inside, watching as you took in the new layout, a little lost but it was your mothers house and she could do what she wanted with it.
Heading back to your room, you stopped in front of the closed door; would it be changed too? Your mother wouldn’t do that… right? You so lost in your mind you didn’t notice Melissa looking at you worriedly, opening her mouth to say something when you pushed the door open, the two of you freezing when it was a basic room, not at all how you left it “I didn’t know she did this” Melissa admitted, knowing that she would’ve warned you if she had known, anger evident in her tone and looking at you when you released a shaky breath, setting your suitcase down and tugging your arm so you’d face her “Oh hun, c’mere” seeing the tears building and pulling you into her without another word.
Later that night, you were waiting for your mom to come back, having asked Melissa to give you some time to yourself after she helped you calm down, needing time to figure out what you were going to say to your mom about changing your room without notifying you first, startling when you heard the front door open, your mom staring at you in slight shock, she must’ve forgot or wasn’t paying attention when you had told her that you were coming home for the summer “What are you doing here?” She asked, irritation evident in her tone, it feeling like a knife was dug into your chest at the harsh question “I only told you three times that I was coming home for the summer” you said, watching as she set her things down and kicked her shoes off, basically brushing you off as she headed for the kitchen.
Getting up and following her into the kitchen, you watched as she dug around in the fridge, completely disregarding the food that was on the stove that you had made and was keeping warm until she got home “There’s food on the stove-” getting cut off when she slammed the fridge door closed “What do you really want, Y/N?” She asked, crossing her arms and watching as you started wringing your hands out, a habit you had developed over the years when you got nervous or stressed out, both happening right at that moment.
“I saw you changed things… it looks nice” you started, gesturing to the living room behind you which was decked out in new furniture “Why didn’t you tell me that you were changing my room too?” You asked, feeling yourself start to shrink back under her sharp gaze that seemed to analyze everything about you “I don’t need your approval to change things in my house” she stated, raising a brow when you let out a frustrated sigh “I know you don’t, but that was my space, it would’ve been nice to know-” “You don’t live here anymore, you are no longer my responsibility nor do I want or need you, so do us both a favor and get back on that plane and leave me alone!” She shouted, pushing past you and heading upstairs, you noticing this time just how much she reeked of alcohol, a door slamming jarring you out of your shock.
With tears in your eyes, you ran out of the house, ignoring the fact it was raining as your legs carried you to a familiar destination, ending up at Melissa’s front door, tears running down our cheeks and soaked to the bone, the minutes between knocking and her finally opening the door feeling like an eternity, feeling a rush of relief when she finally opened the door in a comfy looking shirt and sweatpants, her hair a little everywhere indicating she had been asleep and a bat in hand, making you idly wonder what time it really was “Mel…” you choked out, more tears slipping out.
“Y/N? What the hell? Get in here-” setting the bat to the side before pulling you into the house and shutting the door behind you “-you’re soaked, let me grab you a towel” she said, turning and rushing down the hallway, returning quickly and wrapping the towel around you before pulling you into her arms “Shhhh… tell me what happened, hun” she whispered, holding you tighter when you let out a choked sob into her chest, letting you take the time you needed to explain what all went down, her heart breaking at the fact your own mother treated you the way she had.
After you explained everything to Melissa, she led you to her room so she could give you some fresh, warm clothes to change into “I’m sorry I woke you up” you apologized, watching as she pulled one of her eagles shirts out and a pair of sweats, her setting them on the bed before going over to you and cupping your cheeks, wiping a stray tear away with her thumb “Don’t apologize, I would rather you wake me than go wandering around in this weather… go change, I’ll be in the living room” she said, pressing a gentle kiss to your forehead before leaving the room, closing the door behind her to give you privacy.
When you came back into the living room, you felt your face start to burn when you caught her smiling at the fact you were in her clothes, watching as she set her phone down and patted the spot next to her, tugging you closer when you sat on the other end rather than next to her “You are free to stay with me as long as you need, do you need anything before I head back to sleep?” She asked, wanting to make sure you were taken care of before returning to her room, smiling and patting your leg when you assured her you were okay, pressing a kiss to your head before she headed back to her room.
About an hour later, you got up to head to the spare room for the night when you saw something light up on the coffee table, looking over and seeing Melissa’s phone still sitting there, catching a glimpse of a message from your mother on it.
If you care so much about them then you keep them… - Y/M/N
That small bit that you could see without unlocking the phone was enough to twist the knife that was already buried in your chest, taking a deep breath to steady yourself before returning Melissa’s phone to her room, moving carefully as to not wake her, plugging her phone into the charger and setting it on the nightstand before turning to sneak out, making it to the end of her bed when your pinky toe caught the end of the bed “Shit!” You muttered, collapsing to the floor and holding your foot in pain.
Melissa jumped up when she heard the thud and quickly turned the lamp on before she turned and saw you on the floor “Are you okay, sweetheart?” She asked, helping you up and having you sit on the edge of her bed “Yeah, I was heading to bed and noticed your phone was still on the coffee table so I wanted to put it where it belonged and my toe caught your bed” you admitted sheepishly, watching as Melissa fought hard to not laugh but a small chuckle slipped out “Well, thank you for returning it-” picking her phone up and seeing the message “-what did you see?”
Dropping your gaze to the floor, you messed with the strings on the sweatpants “Enough” you shrugged, taking a shaky breath “She’s not wrong, I’m not important and I don’t deserve anything-” trailing off when her hand firmly gripped your chin and turned your head to face her “Stop that, you deserve everything and your mother is stupid for not realizing that” she said, lightly running her thumb along your bottom lip “Anyone who gets the chance to love you will be the luckiest person alive” she said, her eyes drifting to your lips before meeting your gaze once again “Mel…” You whispered, feeling an imaginary pull between the two of you.
“Can I kiss you?” You asked, locking eyes with her for a moment before realizing what you had just said “I’m sorry, I don’t-” you stuttered before her lips cut you off, stealing the remaining words you had before you melted into the kiss, the two of you pulling back when breathing became necessary, resting your foreheads against one another “I’ve wanted to do that since that night you went to that party and sent me that selfie” Melissa admitted, that having been the night you went to a party last summer, it having been a small one with some classmates, you having sent her a selfie to make sure you looked good, you had wondered why it had taken her so long to respond.
You smiled as you looked at her “Really? I’ve had a crush on you since I was seventeen, I thought it would go away when I left for school… Obviously not” you admitted, reaching over and tucking some loose red strands behind her ear, smiling into the small peck she gave you “We should get to bed… we can talk about this more over dinner?” Melissa suggested, tugging you a little closer by your hips “Dinner sounds wonderful… I’ll see you in the morning?” You asked as you stood, stopping when she grabbed your hand “Or you could sleep in here? If you’re comfortable with that of course” smiling when you nodded and let her tug you onto the bed next to her.
The next morning, you woke up to the spot beside you cold but the smell of breakfast being made and the sound of soft jazz playing from the kitchen, groaning, you forced yourself up and out of Melissa’s bed, making your way to the kitchen and smiling when you saw Melissa standing at the stove, humming along to the music, already dressed for work, this being the last week of school before summer break “Smells good” you smiled, heading over to her and cautiously wrapping your arms around her from behind, unsure what you could and couldn’t do with her, smiling and resting your chin on her shoulder when you felt her lean back against you, the tension releasing from your body.
“I figured you deserved something homecooked” Melissa smiled, pressing a kiss to the side of your head, enjoying this downtime with you “So, I have to work, but when I get back we can go get your stuff from your moms, get you settled here then dinner at this new restaurant that just opened up” she suggested, looking at you when you extracted yourself from her and stole a piece of bacon off the plate, to which she smacked your hand away with a laugh “That works for me, I’ll be here” you said, munching on the bacon.
After Melissa left(after many many kisses), you busied yourself with doing dishes(which was a pain to convince her to let you do) and cleaning up until Melissa got back, taking you to your mothers house who was thankfully nowhere in sight(Melissa had ripped her a new one when she saw her at school) before heading back to Melissa’s, the two of you splitting off to get ready, you wearing your nicest top you had in your suitcase and the nicest pair of pants you had, sadly you didn’t think to pack nice shoes so you were stuck in your vans, checking yourself in the bathroom mirror one last time before heading into the living room to wait for Melissa.
When she entered the room, your jaw dropped, her red curls were down and hanging over her shoulders, her black dress showing off her curves just right and her heels completing the look “Close your mouth, you’ll catch flies” she teased, pushing your chin to close your mouth “Are you sure we need to go out for dinner? I got a whole meal right here” you said, shocking yourself as she smirked “C’mon, I promised my baby dinner, you can have dessert later” she winked before leading you out, the promise being fulfilled as soon as you guys got home, you knew this summer and the next several were going to be the best summers of your life.

I have. Thoughts about this. 1. I think Rodimus has an Aussie accent. Fits him, 2. I really really believe he has a secret drinking problem
I just, dude was part of the Wreckers, saw a whole city destroyed and blames himself for it, ‘failed’ to captain a ship alone, never wanted to be a prime. Roddy has so many issues on his plate that he never addresses. As much as he puts people like Fort Max and red alert through the wringer about having to see Rung, this dude is up there with his issues.
Unfortunately it isn’t uncommon for folks to hide a lot of their pain behind irony, especially mechs like Swerve and Rodimus. But it’s drift, someone close to him that just sees right through it. His face in the last panel literally looks like he took a bullet. Shame, betrayal, and the weight of a responsibility he wasn’t ready for. Idk I’m very autistic about Rodimus I just wanted to rant about him.
Also I forgot which issue this is from and what Drift is referring to “up there” so if anyone has any clarification I would love some

My headcanon for why Veth didn’t join: she’s sober now and knows that adventuring makes her want to drink, so she had to make the tough call.
Cause ngl I will always think about that conversation she had where she talked about how she always goes in first and nothing protects her like getting drunk.
So Veth is home right now taking care of the campers and Yeza is so proud of her.

an au where izzy and ed are ex’s but have remained roommates that work just a lil too hard to (not actually) avoid each other:
The note hangs on the fridge. "Down to one beer." Izzy frowns at it. And who's fault is that, asshole. It's not like Izzy would touch any of that lite shit.
Ed's bedroom door is closed. Ed's bedroom door is always closed these days. Izzy was starting to find the grain of its wood to be more familiar than Ed. They dance around each other, cohabitating in a shared space passing each other like ships in the night. Ed is out till the sun has practically risen, and Izzy leaves for work at eight. Izzy tries not to dwell on the fact that the separation really only exacerbated a preexisting routine.
It was Ed who had started the notes. After everything he walks on eggshells around Izzy, terrified that if he even so much as raises his voice Izzy would shatter. A ridiculous notion. Izzy had gotten this far in life, he wasn't about to shatter now. Regardless Ed's voice had simply seemed to peter out one day. He never realized how much of a constant it was until he was faced with silence. The notes were really starting to grate on his nerves, but he supposes the notes do lead to less yelling.
Sometimes— when Ed has the decency to return before the rest of the world starts getting up for work— the bang of the front door closing rouses Izzy from his sleep. At least that's what he grumbles to himself into the darkness of his room. On those nights Ed usually crashes on the couch, the sound of the TV muffled by the door. Lord knows what he's watching; cable television past dinner was downright awful, but whatever it is makes Ed laugh. Not loudly, just enough for Izzy to hear if he concentrates. He sleeps better those nights.
The note on the fridge leers at him, Ed's scrawl mocking him. He tears the note from the fridge, crumpling it as he shoves it into his pocket.
When Ed returns that night, he opens the fridge to a new case of beer with a note attached that reads, “Make it last.”

RANT ABOUT PEOPLES WEIRD ATTITUDE ABOUT SHANE STARDEW VALLEY INCOMING!!!
saw people complaining about shane today and saying he is a bad and awful husband and they divorced him after seeing his room and that he becomes boring after he starts getting therapy because the interesting thing about him is his struggle with addiction and after you "fix him" what's the point of being with him And just?? Why?? Did you even marry him?? Like?? I dunno, people are allowed to have opinions on characters but so many peoples' opinions are just?? Really bad and rooted deeply in ableism and misconceptions about mental health/addiction and are super saviory??
I have said this a thousand times but you can't fix people. That's literally not how people work. You can, however, be there for people and try and create a safe environment for them to be able to help themselves!! AND THATS EXACTLY EHAT FUCKING HAPPEMS IN STARDEW!! Shane gets help ON HIS OWN because he is being supported by both his family and the farmer. And to see that just fucking fly over peoples heads makes me so mad because DID WE PLAY THE SAME FUCLING GAME?? YOU DONT FIX SHIT!! YOU ACT AS PART OF A SUPPORT SYSTEM!! (Which is very important but like) YOU AS A SINGULAR PERSON CANT FIX PEOPLE!!
I also just hate the "I can fix them" attitude because, at least in this specific situation, the people saying this are the same people who divorce him because his room is ugly or because he is implied to relapse and still is depressed??? It feels like the same thing as when someone has "spread kindness!" or "love each other!" in their bio and then is the most rancid hateful person ever? The room thing in particular makes me mad because LIKE WHAT DID YUOU THINK IT WAS GOING TO LOOK LIKE?? YOU SAW HIS ROOM AT MARNIE'S, WHAT MADE YOU THINK HIS ROOM IN YOUR HOUSE WAS GOING TO BE ORGANIZED AND SPOTLESS???
Idk like, again, you can dislike Shane and even regret marrying him. He's not very nice to you until you really get his hearts up there so he comes off as rude and abrasive. You don't HAVE TO LIKE HIM!! But so many people just spout hateful shit and it's like god, I hope you never have anyone in your life who suffers from mental illness because even though Shane is a video game character, the stuff you're saying and the ideas you have surrounding addiction and mental health are super toxic and weird and I hope no real person ever has to be subjected to them.
edit (put this in the tags but then wanted to add it to the main post):

Chapter 1 Chapter 2
Hey y'all. Here's Chapter 2 of my Sheriff!Leon Kennedy AU. Just a couple of notes, this chapter does have some TW. Domestic violence and Alcohol are mentioned in this chapter. If those are active triggers for you and still want to read, PM me and I'll be glad to summarize for you. Seriously! Also I gave Patrick a last name because he literally DOES NOT HAVE ONE. LOL Anyway this is kind of slowburn-y and this may be more than three chapter but not too many. I might extend to four. Anyways this fic was inspired by @angelscoda and I strongly recommend that if you haven't discovered her page, check her works out! Also, I churned out this Chapter and it hasn't been edited very well, but I did not wanna keep yall waiting. Also if you or anyone you know is affected by domestic violence call 800-799-7233 or text 'START' to 88788. You are not alone, your family and friends love you no matter what situation you may be in or what your abuser says. Love is patient and Love is kind.
You went to bed with a strange feeling. Instead of thinking of your sweetheart, Patrick, you were enamored with the thought of your new boss, Sheriff Kennedy.
He was so kind and unpretentious, it seemed so easy to be around him. You wondered if he read books or looked at the stars and wondered what was behind them like you did.
Y/N shook herself out of her thoughts and drifted off to sleep.
She dreamt of finding new life on other planets, her parents taking her seriously, and most importantly, she dreamt of Leon.
You woke with a start, to the sky at the precipice of sunrise. The oranges and purples danced together as the moon made its grand exit into the horizon.
You swiveled around to the side of your twin bed and let the bottoms of your feet touch the smooth hardwood floor.
You turned off the old fan on your bedside table. The fan had seen better days, however, y/n had taught herself how to make repairs to keep it in working condition.
Her tinkering had been born out of necessity; however, over time she grew to love being able to make old things efficient again. She wondered if Patrick ever had to repair a fan or anything really.
She imagined he had enough money to get a new anything, anytime it broke.
You started the morning by combing your hair and brushing your teeth. You splashed cold water on your face to make it seem less irritated. You didn’t want to admit it, but you wanted to look good for Leon, even if he didn’t notice.
You picked out your favorite dress and ironed out all the wrinkles. You looked at yourself in the mirror admiring your reflection. You felt confident enough to head down the stairs to the kitchen table.
Mary-Anne and Mama were busy fixing breakfast. Mama was fussing over Mary-Anne telling her to sit down and whatnot.
“Mama L/N, I promise I’m fine and your grandchild is just fine!”
“All that moving, he’s gonna come early!” You heard your mama say.
“You and the rest of the family are so sure Hank & Mary-Anne’s baby is going to be a boy.” You said announcing your presence.
“Good! Someone else is here, Mary-Anne! Please sit!” Mama said, exasperated.
Mary-Anne, not wanting to put up a fight any longer, sat down.
“Y/N, why don’t you look pretty today? I remember when I could wear dresses like that!” Mary-Anne said, rubbing her belly.
“You mean like six months ago?” You said sarcastically.
Mary-Anne smiled and your mother rolled her eyes.
You grabbed an apron not wanting to ruin your dress, and began kneading the dough for the biscuits.
“I’m afraid I won’t be able to stay too long, mama. I gotta make sure I'm on time to meet my new boss!” You said a little too enthusiastically because your mother whipped her head around to look at you.
“You know, if you marry Patrick, you won’t have to work anymore, you’ll be busy planning parties and get-togethers for all the married ladies.”
“Mama…” you groaned.
“I’m just saying Y/N, you would love it, imagine, my daughter, the belle of the social season in Collier!” Her mother sighed. “So don’t ruin it by chasing after some cop!”
“Mama!” You said insulted.
Mary Anne decided to get in between the duo.
“I think Y/N just wanted to make sure he felt welcome; after all, it is her job.”  She made sure to emphasize the last word.
Mama’s body relaxed and so did yours.
With that, you kissed your mama goodbye on the cheek and mouthed a “thank you!” to Mary-Anne.
You walked out the door shocked, to see your new boss waiting outside leaning up against the side of the patrol car.
“Hey! Y/N!” He said, smiling with all of his teeth.
You thought your legs were going to turn to jello, he was so handsome.
“W-what are you doing here?”
“I thought I’d save you the trouble of driving that old truck and risk not having a secretary for the day.” He opened the passenger door. “Wouldn’t want to make me late for my first day would you?”
You smiled a genuine smile.
You hopped in the car and you made your way down the road.
The radio was playing Elvis's “Blue Suede Shoes.”
“You like this kind of Music Deputy Kennedy?” You asked genuinely curious. He didn’t strike you as the Elvis type.
“You can call me Leon when it’s just us,” he said, eyes not straying from the road.
He made you blush, and you sank down in the seat unconsciously.
“But to answer your question,” he looked at you with those sharp baby blues. “I love the King.”
You laughed together like it was the funniest joke ever.
You were a little disappointed when you arrived at the station. You could have spent the whole day in the car with Leon.
You two entered the building and you went quickly to the break room to start the coffee for the day.
Leon entered his new office and opened the blinds. Two years ago he would have never imagined a career in law enforcement, let alone a town like Collier’s Sheriff.
Leon was brought out of his thoughts when you walked into the room carrying a fresh cup of coffee.
“Should I get used to this or are you just being nice because its my first day?”
You looked at him confused.
“I’m not used to someone else doing things like this for me.”
“Well get used to it,” you said happily. “The old boss made me bring him his coffee like clockwork and I had to make it juuuussst riiiiigggghhhttt.” You emphasized.
Leon just nodded.
“So Deputy Kennedy, how do you like your coffee?”
“I can make it myself Y/N, don’t worry about it.”
“I insist! You’re going to be pretty busy, pretty soon.” You said looking into the mug. “I don’t want you to worry about the easiest part of your day.”
Leon smiled and patted you on the shoulder. “I take it black, with just a little bit of sugar, Y/N. Thank you.”
You smiled and felt your cheeks get a bit rosy. You fixed his coffee and set it on his desk.
“Well if you need me, I’ll be outside the door. Just ring me if you need me.”
He grabbed your hand gently. “Do you mind staying in here just a little bit longer, I’m not ready to start working quite yet.” He smiled a toothy, but nervous smile.
You held on to his hand and squeezed it in a friendly, assuring manner.
“Of course, Leon.”
He smiled in response.
You looked around the office. It was empty, there were no pictures of his family or any personal effects to the room, save for a framed police academy diploma.
“They didn’t give you time to set up here?”
“What do you mean Y/N?”
“The last guy here had tons of pictures and hunting trophies and…” you realized your mistake a little too late. Maybe, Deputy Kennedy didn’t have those things and you had just reminded him of the fact.
Leon smiled a sad smile, “Well maybe while I’m here, I’ll be able to fill this room with all those things.”
“Leon, I’m sorry I didn’t mean to…”
“It’s okay, you’re honest. I like that about you.”
You smiled and heat spread across your cheeks.
“I don’t have any living family members, I grew up in a group home.”
You felt so embarrassed. How could you just interrogate him like that?
The blowing of the A/C unit emphasized the silence. It felt like your body was on autopilot when you went up to him to pat him on the shoulder.
“I’m so sorry, Leon, I hope you can find your chosen family here.”
“That's really nice of you, Y/N. I hope I do too.”
You quickly took your arm off of his bicep, realizing you were touching your boss in a more than intimate way. You didn’t want to be known as “that” type of girl.
You quickly mumbled “Gotta get back to work,” or something along those lines, and scuttled away.
Leon just kicked his boots and sat down behind his desk. He couldn’t quite figure it out, was she flirting with him or was she genuinely kind? He hated to admit it, but he was used to women throwing themselves at him. They’d be good for a night or two, but they never seemed to care to learn more about him than what he could do for them.
Y/N was sweet, but she was young. She probably had never had a real relationship before, her kindness was just surface-deep; it was nothing more.
He decided to go ahead and look over the schedule for the week that Y/N had already prepared for him.
He could get used to this.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
You were heading to Leigh’s diner to grab lunch for the office. It was actually one of your favorite tasks. You were able to get out of the office and walk around town for a bit. It also helped that you walked past “Gannem’s Appliances” where they always had the news on in the window.
You would take a moment to look at the goings on in the world, to see what was happening outside of your small fishbowl of a town.
The announcer was reading hastily from a fresh news bulletin.
“After 40 years of groundbreaking research, NACA has officially decided to change its name to NASA. The official decision was made late last week, after changing their focus from just flight to space travel of humans and robots.”
You could have fallen right where you stood. Robots? Spaceflight? You were in heaven, you had only daydreamed about working in a high-tech lab with robots; now it was really happening.
You quickly looked at your wristwatch and scuttled to the diner to pick up the order before the men at the office got too hungry and wondered where she was at.
You walked into the bustling diner, thank goodness her order wasn’t quite ready yet. You decided to stay out of the way of the other patrons and sat at an odd chair near the window. You felt almost invisible, but, you were used to it and didn’t mind.
You were stuck in your thoughts until the sound of women gossiping brought you out of your stupor.
“Did you see the new Sheriff? He’s a cutie!” one girl with perfectly coiffed blonde hair asked.
“Do you think he has a secretary? They almost always marry the secretary!” Another girl with auburn hair giggled.
Y/N recognized the girls. They were girls from her graduating class, they had gone to the same school since kindergarten and they either didn’t seem to recognize her or were ignoring her. You couldn’t decide what was worse.
“Oh he has a secretary all right, it's Y/N. Do you remember her from school?”
The girl with auburn hair just raised her eyebrows in slight confusion.
“Great.” you thought. “They don’t remember.” That stung.
“Well, she wasn’t much of anyone, she’s lucky her daddy “the farmer” got her the job,” she emphasized the farmer part as she lit her cigarette.
“Ohhh, I remember said the auburn-haired girl. “Isn’t OUR Patrick supposed to be courting her? I heard his mother set him up, guess they’re trying to fix his image. I hear he made a fool out of himself at the University of Georgia last year. His daddy had to call in a LOT of favors from his buddies from the law school.”
“That’s just Patrick, he’ll grow out of it. I feel bad for him, one bad mistake and he has to get married off to the first prude that would take him. I bet Y/N’s mother is just beside herself, all the new social connections and money.”
“My mama told me her mama was a social climber. Always trying to get invited to social events;  well she’ll never belong just like her daughter.”
The girls broke into laughter.
Your face was red from anger and embarrassment.
Of course, your order was ready and the waitress called out your name which made the girls' heads snap and turn around to look at you. You did your best not to make eye contact, as you grabbed the food, but tears were already falling from your eyes.
As you left you could hear them burst out in more malicious laughter.
You were humiliated, and you just wanted to get back to work.
You were two doors down from the office when you heard a car next to the sidewalk slow to a roll.  You instinctively glanced over and there was Patrick in his fancy car. He was definitely the last person you wanted to see right now.
“Hey, baby. I missed you.” He slurred as he stumbled out of the car.
You took a minute to look at his car, there were beer bottles littering the back seat.
“Let’s go for a ride, I’m bored and I want some alone time with my girl.” He grabbed her roughly.
“Have you been drinking? Why did you drive here? You know it's dangerous! You whispered harshly at him. People were beginning to stare.
“Baby, I just wanted to see you, I’m lonely. You should keep me happy you know, if you’re gonna be my wife,” he was looking at you like a piece of meat.
You felt sick to your stomach.
“I have to get this back to the office, then I’ll come with you.” You were trying to stall, you didn’t want to make him angry, but you surely didn’t want to get in the car with him.
It didn’t matter. He didn’t like your answer. Patrick was shockingly strong and when he yanked you into him, you both fell over and you yelped.
People were now watching and whispering.
You wanted to disappear into dust and wondered if you should have just got in the car, maybe nothing would have happened, and the two of you wouldn’t be out on the sidewalk in the middle of town embarrassing yourselves.
Patrick yanked you up and raised his hand to hit you, you braced for impact when someone broke you two up.
It was Leon and his face was calm, but she could feel the anger radiating from him.
“Y/N! Do you know this man?” He said calmly but firmly.
Before you could answer, Patrick yelled at Leon. “I had it handled man, she’s my fiance. We don’t need your services anymore.” He made a move to grab your arm again. Leon moved in between you two.
“Sir, not only are you in violation of a city ordinance of being intoxicated in public, but you are also assaulting your fiance in public, which is a felony charge.”
Patrick just scoffed. “And what? You’re gonna arrest me? Do you even know who I am?”
Leon stepped closer to Patrick, they were about the same height, but something about Leon’s body language made him seem taller.
“Yes, Sir you’re under arrest for the assault of my secretary Miss Y/L/N. You have the right to remain silent…” he began cuffing Patrick in broad daylight.
“Wait a minute! Y/N just tell him we were just fooling around baby.” Patrick pleaded with you.
“Deputy Kennedy please, we’ll handle this in private. Patrick just made a bad mistake that's all.”
You pleaded to Leon, you hoped he would take your side.
“Handle in private? Are we supposed to wait until he kills you Y/N?” He said loudly.
You couldn’t move. This was really happening and everyone was going to blame you for Patrick going to jail.
Leon picked Patrick up and brought him into the station and locked him up in their little holding cell.
Everyone in the office was dead silent when they saw who Deputy Kennedy was bringing in on the first day. You followed in quickly behind them and everyone glared at you. You ignored the glares and got on the phone to call Senator Armstrong, Patrick’s father.
Deputy Kennedy refused to let you see your Fiance, stating that she was the victim and a witness to his crime.
You just sat in your small little cubicle and cried. You cried over how embarrassed you were and how those girls were right, Patrick didn’t really love you. How could he? Who would do that to someone they loved?
The sounds of a man shouting broke the silence of the police department.
“How could you lock this man up? It was a simple lovers' quarrel, they’re both kids!” You heard Senator Armstrong’s baritone voice fill the small station.
“You either ignore your son’s behavior or are too ignorant to see it.” Leon quipped back.
“Excuse me?” Armstrong sneered. “You better watch it boy or I’ll…”
“Or what Armstrong? I’ll go missing? Don’t go incriminating yourself in the police department now.” Leon said smugly.
You walked out of your cubicle to see the scene unfolding in front of you. You thought Senator Armstrong was going to have an aneurysm with how red his face was.
He quickly looked over at you and saw your tear-stained face. “My poor future daughter! Look what you’ve done! You’ve upset her by jailing her fiance right in front of her!”
He wrapped a heavy arm around your shoulders. “ I paid the bail and I'm taking my family home.”
Leon just gestured for the door and said nothing. Senator Armstrong ushered you out, but not before you took one final look back at Leon with fresh tears in your eyes.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
You were sitting in the Armstrongs’ tinted limousine Patrick’s head on your lap. You couldn’t help but stroke his soft hair. He buried his face in the fabric of your dress and groaned.
“I can’t believe that asshole through me into the cell with all those actual criminals. It was miserable, sobering up in that shithole.”
You rolled your eyes instinctively, Leon’s words ringing in your ears still. “What if he did lose his temper and couldn’t stop hitting me?” You shrugged it off. It was just one bad moment, he’ll change.
Your future father in Law just glared daggers into his son.
When you arrived at your home, you still patted Patrick’s head gently. “I’ll see you later honey.”
He quickly leaned up and kissed you on the mouth for the first time. It was sloppy and full of want. It wasn’t sweet at all and you felt sick.
You quickly got out of the car and ran into the house.
When you arrived in the foyer, Hank was waiting for you.
“Is that bastard out there?” He asked angrily.
You looked down at your feet, you thought you’d at least be able to sleep and take a bath before being interrogated about the incident earlier.
You heard your mom shout from the kitchen. “Is my baby home? Hank you leave your sister alone! She needs to rest.” Your mother hurried in to welcome you.
“Oh sweetie, there’s no need to cry.” She wiped your tears with a cloth she had in her apron. “Daddy and I get into arguments all the time.”
Hank got even angrier. “You know damn well that was no argument they had, Thomas Wells said that son of a bitch shook her like a ragdoll before Deputy Kennedy got to them.”
Your Mama just rolled her eyes. “Thomas Wells is a known exaggerator, people love talking about people who they’re jealous of. Speaking of Y/N, you’re not going back to that job. It doesn’t look respectable to have the future Mrs. Armstrong working at that office.”
Your mother grabbed your arm gently and took you into the dining room and fixed your dinner. She hadn’t done this since you were a child, she was definitely trying to get on your good side.
You felt that familiar pit of disappointment and anguish in your stomach. You had realized Mama really did want to be a part of the social class as the Armstrongs. She wanted it so bad she was willing to cover up what Patrick was willing to do to you.
You nibbled on supper and went upstairs to cry, you were exhausted.
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
You couldn’t sleep that night. All you could do was replay the day’s events over and over in your mind.
You also felt extremely violated by Patrick’s lack of respect for you.
When daybreak came, you took a light catnap for an hour or two. You were awoken by your mother shaking you awake.
“Y/N, sweetie, time to wake up.”
You squinted at her through your dark eyelashes, confused.
“Don’t give that look, Y/N, Suzanne Armstrong called and wanted to take you shopping.”
You lurched up from your bed. “Miss Suzanne...why?”
“She wants to make sure you look polished for the engagement party of course. The local and state newspapers will be covering it of course.” Your mother said excitedly. “Hopefully she’ll remember your mama too, I could get one of those tweed suits just like the first lady! Wouldn’t that be fun?”
You smiled a sad smile. You wanted to see your mama happy, but was she willing to do the same for you?
You got up and began your morning ritual, you made sure your dress was crisply ironed and you even added a ribbon in your hair to make yourself look a little more stylish.
You waited patiently in the sitting room before seeing the car roll up. Your mother ushered you out the door and into the awaiting town car, driven by a chauffeur of course. He opened the door for you. Inside awaiting looking prim as ever, was Miss Suzanne in a pastel-colored suit.
“Well look at this little doll,”  she said and kissed your cheeks. “I just can not wait for you to marry my son. You two are just going to give me and your mama the cutest little grandbabies.”
You smiled uncomfortably.
The town car started to pull away into town and Miss Suzanne wasted no time discussing future plans with you.
“So, I’ve already contacted all the news outlets. The Atlanta Sentinel is sending reporters to this party and even LIFE Magazine!” She squealed excitedly.
“They love the Cinderella feel of this story, my dear. Everyone loves a great love story.” She composed herself again. “and it is my job as fairy godmother, to make sure you ARE the belle of the ball. There are going to be a lot of eyes and I want to make sure you look perfect.”
She looked you up and down. “We’ll have to do away with this wardrobe,” she motioned with her pointer finger to your homemade dress.
The car was heading out of town, you made a comment about going to the local department store in town.
Miss Suzanne let out a full-bodied laugh. “My dear, we’re going to Atlanta to shop. You can’t be photographed in some outfit from Belford’s.”
You just fell silent and looked out the window as Miss Suzanne rambled on about how excited she was, planning a wedding, and how much great press it would be for her husband and Patrick.
When they finally arrived at the fancy boutique in midtown Atlanta, they were greeted by staff in crisp uniforms waiting outside for their arrival.
The head designer, or who you assumed was the head designer came blowing through the doors and came to greet your future mother-in-law.
“My dear, thank you for coming, let me grab your coat.” He grabbed Suzanne’s expensive tweed jacket and hat. He handed it to a dour-looking assistant.
He then acknowledged you.
“My, my who is this diamond in the rough?”
Suzanne answered for you. “A diamond in the rough indeed. This is my future daughter in Law, Y/N.”
You didn’t know whether to curtsy or not. You gently bent your knees and answered with a quiet “hello.”
“My goodness, she is just precious! We certainly have our work cut out for us.” The man snickered.
Being brought up in the south, you knew being called precious wasn’t a compliment.
You sighed as you followed the man and Suzanne into the boutique knowing it was going to be a long day.

Years of trauma, heavy drinking, and hard drugs fragmented a lot of Rayman/Ramon's memories. He doesn't have very many left of Dimension X. He has trouble trying to remember what his own parents looked like.
The only person he really remembers from Dimension X was Globox. Rayman/Ramon assumed he died back in Dimension X.
He has to rely on pictures and stories to help jog the memory.
He latches onto Bullfrog as a friend after the rescue because of how much he reminds Rayman/Ramon of Globox. Bullfrog was hesitant on befriending Rayman/Ramon at first, but they did eventually bond. Rayman/Ramon and Bullfrog becoming close allies and friends.

Startercall for @seaoftales
Lola breathed a sigh of relief when she stumbled upon a bar. Her crew had been partying hard last night and she desperately needed booze to mull over this growing hangover she had. Lola had sat down and ordered her drink, as she was enjoying her whiskey she heard laughter next to her, she quickly glanced at the person sitting next to her and almost did a spit take. Sitting next to her was Red-haired Shanks, one of the Emperors of the sea.

Tw: Graphic Depiction of Violence and Alcoholism.
--
John's eyes fluttered open as the bright sunlight hit his eyes through the bedroom window.
John had overslept. He sat up on his bed and held his head in his hands. It throbbed with pain because of last night's hangover.
John could feel his own bad breath from his mouth - not to mention his body, which was stinking with sweat.
John knew he couldn't sleep anymore, so he slowly dropped his feet on the floor, wore his slippers and got off the bed to walk towards the bathroom door and get in.
John had been staying in the house he had once shared with Mary in the sub-urbs. Even after her death. After all, he wouldn't dare to ask Sherlock if he could move back in to Baker Street in this pathetic, alcoholic state, would he?
John closed the bathroom door behind him and grabbed his toothbrush and paste.
He could not even be a proper father to Rosie. Right now, his daughter was staying with Molly.
John didn't even feel an ounce of shame dumping her there.
He opened the tap to wet his brush, and half-heartedly applied some paste on it before putting it in his mouth.
As John stared at his own puffy, red eyes in the mirror, the images of that day in the hospital morgue flashed before him. For the millionth time.
John's left hand - which was monotonously brushing his teeth - trembled at the image of Sherlock lying on the morgue floor and taking his brutal kicks and punches. Sherlock's previously beautiful face, swollen and reddened. Blood dripping out of his mouth as he coughed because of John's monstrosity.
John had thought of Sherlock as an emotionless, thinking machine a couple of times before, hadn't he?
Then beating Sherlock up in the morgue, with no fault of his, despite being in love with him ever since John had met him - what did that make John?
It was as though the bathroom mirror had helped John with some self-reflection, albeit in a cruel way.
He's not a sociopath. I am, he thought as he felt his throat tighten - not necessarily because of having kept the toothbrush in his mouth for too long.

Thinking about Remus Lupin with an alcohol addiction
He started drinking when he was a preteen, having access to alcohol at home. His father had a whiskey collection, wouldn't realise Remus drank unless a whole bottle was missing. So when Rem got bored in the summer, without permission to sleepover at his friends' houses, he took a sip.
He was taught to keep things to himself, to take up no space. He ought to be invisible to make sure no one finds out he's a werewolf. So even as a teenager, with four best friends who all knew what happened once a month, and furthermore became animagi to make the wolf company, he bottled up his problems. Acted fine. Blamed it on the moon when his neutral mask failed. To cope with the feelings he didn't dare say, he drank.
His friends did say he drank a lot at parties, but since he seemed unaffected, they just believed he was heavyweight and didn't pay it too much thought. In truth, he was just used to alcohol.
He didn't want to admit to himself that it was a problem. No one was getting hurt. He wasn't erratic nor violent. And he controlled the amount he drank. But he couldn't help feeling guilty about the bottles he had hidden.
It took a week of forced sobriety after the Marauders found the stash for him to realise he did have an addiction. They couldn't get him to stop drinking altogether, but he did slow down and started opening up instead of drowning his thoughts with booze.
In the summer of fifth year, after Sirius pranked Snape, which resulted in the Slytherin nearly being killed or turned into a werewolf by Moony, the addiction hit hard. Lupin drank every day to cope with the betrayal. He got properly fucked out and his body created a dependance. Sixth year was not a good one. Thankfully there were no exams because he barely paid attention in classes. He started skipping some. Got behind on lessons. Avoided his friends. Hid away with the map to drink hidden away and in peace.
Sirius one day grabbed him and sobbed, pleaded for Remus to scream, hex, curse him or beat him up if needed, anything but self destructing. And under the influence, Moony did just that. The guilt came afterwards, even though Sirius had taken it all without fighting back. Lupin allowed himself to forgive Sirius. He missed him. And he was clearly regretful.
Slowly, the Marauders got back together. They worked hard for Rem to recover. And recovery passed by becoming sober.
It was a bitch. It was a real bitch, abstinence. He had fevers, threw up many times despite not eating for days, highly dehydrated, and his mind was loud with shouts for the sweet release he was so acquainted with. Some days he felt were as bad or maybe even worse than a full moon. He wasn't ripping his skin apart, but instead ripping his soul. However, as always, as a good Gryffindor, he pulled through.
It took many months but after he got clean, he didn't touch booze. Not even at parties - which his friends tried making alcohol free for his sake. He got very close to Padfoot in that whole healing process, finding the most comfort in talking to him about his problems rather than with Prongs and Wormtail. They even started dating in the seventh year.
Moony's life was good, he was in control, surrounded by loved ones, with Sirius by his side no matter what. He didn't need alcohol.
Lupin relapsed on the 1st November 1981.

Aegon: All right, look, here’s the deal. I’ve got an hangover. Who knows what that means?
Y/N: It means you’re drunk.
Aegon: No, it means I was drunk yesterday.
