On September 8, 1974, American daredevil Evel Knievel attempted to jump over the Snake River approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) west of the Shoshone Falls on a rocket-powered motorcycle, the Skycycle X-2, after unsuccessfully petitioning the U.S. Government to let him attempt a jump over the Grand Canyon. Knievel and his team purchased land on both sides of the Snake River and built a large earthen ramp and launch structure. A crowd of 30,000 gathered to watch Knievel’s jump, which failed because his parachute opened too early, causing him to float down towards the river. Knievel likely would have drowned were it not for canyon winds that blew him to the river bank; he ultimately survived with a broken nose.
The Snake River is named for the Snake Indians, through whose country the greater part of the river flows. The Indians, in turn, were named "Snake" by their Plains neighbors to the east, possibly because they reputedly used snake heads painted on sticks to terrify their Plains enemies. The Snake River originates in Wyoming and arcs across southern Idaho before turning north along the Idaho-Oregon border. The river then enters Washington and flows west to the Columbia River.
The Perrine Bridge is a popular BASE jumping site known all over the world; it may be the only man-made structure in the United States where BASE jumping is allowed year-round without a permit. Jumpers often use the nearby visitor center as a home base before and after parachuting from the bridge.
I just got out of Blackfoot's mental hospital... yesterday morning.
Was hospitalized for over a month..I died once in the ambulance is what I was told...also on life support for about 2 days...when I woke up the first time I was extremely violent, attacking the nurses, and my sister...even pulled out my ivs, catheter, and feeding tube...The second time I woke up I wondered why the nurse wouldn't leave me alone...spent a few days in the hospital, then got transported to a mental hospital in Twin Falls, then transported to state, in Blackfoot. I was taken care of pretty well and appreciate everyone that was/is involved in my healing. Now, back in Jerome. So thankful my job waited for me, lots of gratitude for my boss too. ☯️☮️🤟
