Hello I am back to do some psychoanalysis on my favorite topic (Uguisumaru)
I really think that one of Uguisumaru's defining traits is codependency; even after Kiwame, he has to talk about Ookanehira somehow. Certainly I don't think he's boring because of it, but it's his fatal flaw (all toudan have them sowwy). He doesn't see himself as interesting on his own so he attaches himself to someone else, unable to recognize his own value as an individual. Like I said, it gets better after Kiwame (like his "I'm better than you" line when sparring) but it's still there and always will be there.
I wonder if this is due to the fact that he was an art piece and was never sent to the battlefield, so he really doesn't have acclaim on his own: his big claim to fame is being an Imperial Treasure, and that isn't necessarily about him or what he has done, but who he belongs to. He has spent his whole life as the possession of someone else, only valued because of how other people see him, so of course this would carry into his life as a toudan too.
It might also be because, as we all know, he was made wrong by Bizen Tomonari; his metal wasn't sealed properly and began to blister, which is why he was reforged before being presented to the emperor. He was literally remade because someone else wanted him: not because he was damaged in battle or because he took part in some momentous historical event like the burning of Osaka Castle. His whole value as a sword, the defining event of his life, is transactional and at the behest of someone else.
Yes, all toudan are important because of who they belonged to or who made them, otherwise they would have just been nameless swords that were melted down and sold for scrap. However, Uguisumaru's story is a bit more tragic because that is his only purpose. His only value. Not because he was sharp like Kasen, or beautiful like Mikazuki, or spiritual like Ishikirimaru, or fought over like Tsurumaru. Just because someone decided to give him as a gift. He has no other acclaim but that he was a damaged sword that had to be fixed.
So of course he would become codependent. Of course he would see his value as who he belongs to, and that person is Ookanehira. Not to say that their relationship isn't full of love and affection, but Uguisumaru see his value as "who wants me" not "what do I do." This is so achingly apparent in his characterization in Hanamaru, where he just kinda sits and waits for Ookanehira to come home.
One of the first things he says to Mikazuki is "have you seen Ookanehira," and we really only see him get up and do something interesting if someone wants him to. His episode talking to Hirano about Ookanehira isn't even about him - it's about Ookanehira and what he's observed about him. In the movies, most of his lines or actions revolved around what Ookanehira wants, what Ookanehira is doing, what Ookanehira needs. In the live-action movie he doesn't have Ookanehira, but he's still just a plot device for main characters. In the stage plays he's always doing something for or about Ookanehria.
It's honestly quite sad, because I don't think Ookanehira is trying to diminish Uguisumaru or make him subservient; that's just the way Uguisumaru is. Some swords see themselves as weapons, some see themselves as sinners. Uguisumaru sees himself as a possession and nothing more.
