Diversity Win: Is "Crazy Rich" POC Representation Necessarily Empowering?
sodapopsculptor asked:
I’m writing a story with two sets of protagonists: A trio with a Black girl, a Latino, and a Vietnamese-American boy who all come from middle-upper class to ridiculously rich families, and a pair of white working-middle class sisters. They’re all heroes of this story. I’ve seen way too many rich white people and poor poc people in fiction, and I’m kinda getting sick of it, but I’m worried that by having the poc kids be rich and the white girls not so much, I’ll be reinforcing the idea that poc somehow rule the world. The only time the rich kids use their status as leverage is when the Asian threatens to sic his cop dad on a bully (race unstated but I imagined him as white) picking on a freshman, and during the Black girl’s birthday party, when she pays the biggest jock there fifty bucks (And later says offhandedly that it was just what she had in her pocket) to chase off a creep hitting on her.
OP, have you ever seen the “diversity win!” meme before?
I understand that your motivation for these narrative choices is to give POC a chance, if you will, to be the rich characters. But it is evident from this ask that you have not asked yourself what this entails. I want to ask you to critically examine the race and class intersections you’re creating here, as well as these kids’ roles in oppressive systems.
You explain that these rich POC are heroes and only have righteous reasons for leveraging their power.
But is your Black girl character aware of the potential disciplinary and/or legal consequences her jock accomplice might face while she has the resources to keep her hands clean? Are you?
Is your Asian character aware of how much of an abuse of power it is to “sic” a cop on someone, and the sheer amount of harm a criminal record or incarceration does to a juvenile with behavior issues? Are you?
So you want to put POC in positions of power for #representation.
Does it resonate with the group you’re representing?
Do you research and portray the unique ways race, ethnicity, class, and majority vs. minority status come together?
Or are you putting these characters in oppressive hegemonic roles for the sake of a power fantasy, on behalf of a group you're not even in?
To your question, you're not reinforcing the idea that "POC rule the world" because such a generalized belief does not exist. Instead, you're reinforcing:
The idea that society has “winners” and “losers.”
The idea that the problem with disproportionately powerful people is the lack of “equal opportunity” as opposed to the power imbalance to begin with.
The idea that those in oppressive positions of power need only have the right intentions to justify their use of it.
To be clear: that is not to say that you can't have jerk aristocrat billionaire millionaire crazy rich POC. Evil or mean rich characters are fun! I have some myself! You can even have rich characters who are gentle-hearted and well-intentioned, but you have to know the ways in which they’re privileged and decide how aware of that your characters are. That’s no problem.
But if you think that wealthy and powerful POC would have the same values and priorities as their poorer counterparts, you’re deluding yourself. There’s a reason why the quote “power corrupts” exists. There’s a reason why no matter where you look on the globe, there are historical dictators and tyrants.
If you want bratty rich POC who lack regard for the consequences of their actions, because you want bratty rich characters, great! If you want them because it would be uplifting or empowering representation? You’re doing it for the wrong reason.
~ Rina
I fully agree with Rina, and truly want to emphasize the last paragraph.
If you want bratty rich POC who lack regard for the consequences of their actions, because you want bratty rich characters, great! If you want them because it would be uplifting or empowering representation? You’re doing it for the wrong reason.
I don't think you need to aim to subvert or purposely make all the BIPOC rich and powerful and the white people poor and suffering. Add diversity and include upper class rich and class privileged BIPOC, sure thing! And you can avoid your fears of intentional subversion message by including rich and powerful white characters as well, even if they're not the focus of your story. Just their existence helps. You could also include middle-class characters of Color as well.

Femme Fatale Playbook: How To Look More Expensive & Elevate Your Aura
Looking expensive or 'rich' is all about investing in yourself, your appearance, how you carry yourself, and not shying away from signature details or indulgences. Here are some tips to level up your look and demeanor to feel high-class in your daily life – no matter how much money you want to spend in these life arenas.
Appearance:
Prioritize Proper Grooming: Always looking clean and put-together is the ultimate sign of class. Shower daily. Brush, and take care of your teeth. Wash your hair on a regular schedule. Never allow your hair to look greasy – brush and blow dry it regularly. Cleanse, exfoliate, and moisturize every inch of your face and body. Perform your skincare routine religiously. Apply sunscreen daily.
Tailor & Steam Your Clothes: Freshly-pressed and well-fitting clothes always look infinitely more expensive – no matter their price point. Looking rich and expensive is about high self-regard and paying attention to the little details. Ensure your garments look crisp and clean – no wrinkles, pet hairs, loose threads, lint pieces, or fabric bulges highlighting an improper fit.
Create A Classic & Streamlined Capsule Wardrobe: Simplicity radiates a chic sophistication. Go back to the basics with timeless pieces – like a button-down blouse, a classic crewneck sweater, black trousers or straight-leg jeans, leather pants, a leather jacket, a trench or wool coat, a well-fitting cami or tee shirt, a simple slip dress, or a knit set. Focus on a neutral color palette – black, champagne, dark grey, chocolate brown, camel, or crisp white shades. Seek out elevated fabrics – such as Pima cotton, cashmere, washable silk, and buttery vegan or recycled leather.
Invest In Signature Pieces: Spend on "outer shell' items – coats, jackets, heavyweight knits, handbags, and shoes – that directly interact with the outside world and can be worn repeatedly with almost every outfit. Save on items like tee shirts or more simple jewelry pieces that can be found for less while still being fairly high-quality. I recommend Everlane, Lilysilk, and Naadam for affordable basics (Frankie Shop, Skims, and Norma Kamali for moderately priced pieces) and Catbird and Oma The Label for well-priced accessories. Here are all the everyday essentials you need to build the ultimate Femme Fatale Wardrobe.
Simplify Your Beauty Routine: Fresh, clear, and glowy skin radiates rich girl energy. A well-curated skincare routine should do half the heavy lifting. However, you will probably want to include a shade-matched foundation, concealer, and powder into your makeup routine along with a bronze contour, a rosy blush, and a subtle highlighter. Shape and fill in your brows for a polished look. Apply a deep black mascara to your lashes and luscious black eyeliner to your top lid, waterline, and tight line – keep the strokes thin and crisp (create a subtle wing if desired). Finish your face with a deep pink nude, red, or deep wine lipstick/gloss/lip tint. Here's a guide to the ultimate Femme Fatale Beauty Routine for a completely elevated (and sensual) look.
Eat Healthfully & Workout: Health is wealth. Taking care of your body shows self-respect – your most priceless asset. So, incorporate whole, plant-based foods into your daily diet and make it a priority to find movement you love that you can incorporate into your routine multiple times a week.
Lifestyle:
Streamline The Details: The rich girl aesthetic is all about refinement and looking put together at all times. Always have a set of matching pens with coordinating notepads on your desk, a uniform set of coffee mugs on the counter, coasters, glassware, sheets, pillowcases, cold-weather accessories, etc. This attention to detail instant makes your environment look more expensive.
Have Personalized Stationery: A high-value woman isn't shy about leaving her signature touch. Have personalized stationery (thank you notes, greeting cards, business cards, etc.) monogrammed and on hand for anytime you need to send a note or gift to a friend, coworker, boss, client, etc. This addition shows your attention to detail, leaves the recipient something small to remember you by, and adds a human touch to any gift or gesture. Try gold lettering on cream cards for an elegant, expensive look.
Keep Prosecco & Sparkling Water On Hand: Bubbly on a budget feels just as expensive as champagne (and tastes great too). Sparkling water elevates your daily H20 – add some lemon, lime, orange wedges, or frozen berries for a fancy, fruity twist.
Have Proper Place Settings: Neat, thoughtful presentation exudes class and rich energy. Whenever hosting any type of sit-down event or cocktail party, have the plates stacked, glasses and cutlery arranged correctly. Have all of the appropriate utensils readily available. Again, it's all about the details.
Stay Informed & Well-Read: A thirst for knowledge, learning and having the ability to engage in thoughtful, informed, and intellectual imbues a high-class radiance into any room. Read books, learn about different cultures and current events, and invest in studying different industries, and interests. Explore your hobbies. A rich mindset translates and generates an overall elevated aura.
Demeanor:
Learn Proper Etiquette: Address people by name, and offer a firm handshake. Maintain eye contact. Say "please" and "thank you." RSVP promptly. Communicate clearly and compassionately.
Maintain Good Posture: Shoulders back and relaxed. Open your chest. Keep your back straight and your head held high. Take up space. Command presence.
Master The Art of Engaging Conversation: Prioritizing self-presentation, learning how to listen, holding your own, and encouraging others to feel relaxed are the secrets to becoming magnetic in any social situation. Read more of my tips HERE.
Embrace An Abundant Mindset: Free your mind of limiting beliefs and notions of scarcity. There are plenty of opportunities, experiences, and emotions to go around. Another person's success doesn't take away from your potential. Focus on expansion, not envy.
Remain Confident & Unbothered: Believe in yourself. Invest in your well-being. Prioritize your goals and block out the noise from anyone trying to tear you down or criticize you for your ambition, goals, or desires. Stay in your own lane. Allow others to do the same. This is how you level up to elevate into your queen energy to create a rich life and design your dream reality.

When he got back to the Post Office, Moist looked up the Lavish family in Whom's Whom. They were indeed what was known as "old money," which meant that it had been made so long ago that the black deeds which had originally filled the coffers were now historically irrelevant. Funny, that: a brigand for a father was something you kept quiet about, but a slave-taking pirate for a great-great-great grandfather was something to boast of over the port. Time turned the evil bastards into rogues, and rogue was a word with a twinkle in its eye and nothing to be ashamed of.

1 | Been Dating
Series: Disastrous
Paring: Felix Catton x Original female character!
Warnings: None
Word Count: 1.1k
A/N: Yes, to picture how Juliette looks, I imagined Madison Beer since she's so fucking beautiful it's unfair.
| MASTERLIST |
Tumblr media
~~~
Almost everyone at Oxford University loved Felix Catton. How could they not? He was fun, cool, nice, and attractive. God, did every girl on campus have a thing for him.
"Juliette, what's wrong?" Felix rests his chin on her shoulder while she searched for a book.
"Oh, you know the usual. Girls talking about how they want to fuck you." She shakes her shoulder to get him off of her.
"If I remember correctly, you hate PDA at school so everyone thinks I'm single and you don't correct them." He moves to look at her face.
"If I remember correctly, you wanted to keep our relationship a secret...The moment we started here." She gives him a look.
"You agreed, babe. So girls don't give you shit."
"Well, I change my mind. I'd rather deal with that than hear what I hear." She tells him.
"Alright, no more hiding. But that means you have to show some PDA to let all the girls know I'm just yours." He says making her smile.
"You better be just mine. Because I swear if you ever cheat..." She leans up to give him a kiss, "I'll cut your dick off." She kisses him.
"Good thing, I'm not a cheater." He reaches for the book she finally found.
"Thank you."
"I'll see you later at the pub." He kisses the top of her head leaving.
As she heads back towards the table she was studying at she catches an another guy looking at her. She gives him a small smile and wave to be polite even though she felt uncomfortable.
Way later in the day at the pub, Juliette shows up a little bit later than Felix and everyone else. She wanted to look decent so the girls wouldn't say anything to her. She wore a lace long sleeve T-shirt that was a slim sit solid brown with her low rise jeans.
"Sorry I took so long." She smiles walking up to the groups table.
"I was getting worried you weren't going to show, love." Felix reaches out grabbing her by the waist to pull her down on his lap to kiss her cheek.
Literally everyone at the table, except Farleigh, was shocked by their actions. Well, Farleigh was a bit too since they were finally being open around others. It was about time since the two have been dating for five  and a half years.
"I thought you two were just childhood friends?" One of the girls eyes the couple.
"Yeah, but we've been dating for five and a half years. Juliette here isn't big on letting the world know things." Felix says causing her to look at him, "That's not entirely true about her because it was my idea to keep us a secret at college." He corrects himself.
"Why so? Wouldn't you like to let other guys that find her attractive she's taken. Same thing reversed." One of the guys asks now.
"It doesn't matter if they did or didn't want to... You can't break the two apart." Farleigh takes a drag off his cigarette.
"I should have known something since you brush off every girl that begs for your attention." Another girl at the table laughs, "Sorry for trying, Juliette." She laughs more while Juliette forces a smile.
Felix could tell she felt uncomfortable so his grip around her waist tightens, "Ignore her." He whispers into her ear.
"Excuse me." She gets off his lap to take a step out to giver herself a pep talk.
"You alright, love?" Felix joins her.
"Yeah, you didn't have to come check on me." She lets out a chuckle as he walks up to wrap his arms around her so she'll look up at him.
"But I wanted to because I care about you. I know you don't care for my friends but I want you with me." He leans down to place his forehead against hers.
"How did I get so lucky with you?" She smiles.
"Your parents decided to put you in an expensive school and you met me at a very young age. And as we grew up I developed feelings for you." He says making her laugh before kissing him, "Now, lets get back in there and hopefully time fly's by."
Back inside, Juliette wasn't a huge drinker so she didn't drink as much as the others. Nor did she chat a lot with the others. Honestly, she wanted to leave about an hour ago but was only there for Felix.
"Oh! There he is. Ollie! Oliver! Oliver! Come here, mate! Yeah, come here. Come here. What? Come here." Felix starts to shout once he sees him at the bar and Juliette recognized it was the guy from the library, "Hiya, mate." He smiles, "This is my fucking hero right here. I was just telling everyone how you saved my arse yesterday."
"So cute." The girls start to say while Juliette looks at them. She knew they were only saying that for Felix.
"Hey, take a seat. I owe you a drink." Felix tells him so he takes a seat at the table with them.
More time goes on and everyone kept buying rounds while Juliette just sipped on her beer, "It's your round man." Farleigh tells Oliver and Juliette could tell he only wanted to leave since it seemed like her couldn't afford a round.
Everyone boos him so he gets up to go pay, "Farleigh." Felix and Juliette say his name.
"What?"
"Just cut him a break, mate. That round's gonna cost a fucking fortune." Felix says while Juliette sees Oliver talking to the bartender like he was begging him.
"I don't think he can pay for it." She tells Felix so he looks over as well, "You should go give him a hand. Oh, here. I think he dropped this." She hands Felix some of her money for him to give it to Oliver.
"You are the sweetest." He gets up walking over to the bar, "Thought you might need a hand with these ones, mate. Oh, and Juliette said you dropped this on the floor by your feet." Felix hands him the money, "I was gonna nick it, but I thought I'd do the right thing."
"Thank you. I'll, umm, pay her back tomorrow."
"Don't know what you're talking about, mate. Neither will she." Felix takes the tray of drinks, "Thank you, Ollie! Whoa!" He shouts so the others thank him too.
When everyone was done for the night, Oliver stopped Juliette as she was walking off with Felix, "What up Ollie?" She gives him a smile.
"Thank you about earlier and -,"
She cuts him off, "Oh, yeah. I stopped him from nicking it so you could pay for the round. After all it was your and you accidently dropped it." She smiles more, "I'm sure I'll see you around more often. Have a good night." She waves as Felix tells him night as the couple walk off together.
SECOND COURSE - KITCHEN
(or at least the main parts i recognized)
Tumblr media
mads mikkelsen and lydia hearst for "euroman", april 2010 by kenneth willardt.
1. GE Monogram 36" Rangetop
First up, the rangetop. Unlike a cooktop, which sets into a pre-cut space in a counter or island, a rangetop overflows the sides and extends beyond the boundaries of the counter with front-facing knobs. This unit in particular is the GE Monogram 36" Rangetop (ZGU366NPSS), with an MSRP of $3400, reversible grates, and six 18,000 BTU power boil burners.
2. 30" GE Monogram Tri-Zone Counter Depth Integrated Refrigerator
Next, a dual installation of 30" GE Monogram Tri-Zone Counter-Depth Integrated Refrigerators (ZIC30GNHIl, shown with optional custom panels for seamless appearance). With an MSRP of $6999 each, these units are made more shallow, known in the industry as counter-depth, to integrate properly with standard cabinetry. Featuring fridge, freezer, and convertible middle-drawer climate zones, this unit has a capacity of 14.09 cu. ft. overall, per unit. It has two separate sealed systems for constant temperature control, and uses the first HFC-Free refrigerant, which has a lower global-warming impact.
3. 30" GE Monogram European Convection Double Wall Oven
A 30" GE Monogram European Convection Double Wall Oven (ZET2SHSS). An MSRP of $5300, with two 5.0 cu. ft. capacity oven cavities. With easy-to-clean all-glass interior door panels, both self-clean and steam-clean options, ten-pass baking elements, and two True European Convection ovens, these units boast convection bake and roast features with closed-door broiling as to not overheat a kitchen, and a built-in temperature probe for perfectly cooked roasts. It also offers a proof mode to assist dough-rising for avid bakers, convection conversion as to not overcook standard recipes, can be monitored remotely with use of a smart phone and GE's WiFi Connect app, and is programmable in both Celsius and Fahrenheit.
4. GE Monogram 240v Built In Oven with Advantium Speedcook Technology
Behold, the GE Monogram 240v Built In Oven with Advantium Speedcook Technology (ZSC2201JSS).
This bad chicken has an MSRP of $3200 and has settings for Speedcook, microwave, convection, and warming. What the hell is Speedcook? It's a combination of microwaves and convection, delivering results up to eight times faster than conventional cooking, and without the need for pre-heating. This thing can reheat, microwave, toast, brown, bake, and gently warm to your heart's content, and has the ability to remember custom recipes.
5. 30" GE Monogram Warming Drawer
Next up, the 30" GE Monogram Warming Drawer (ZW9000SJSS). With an MSRP of $1600, this drawer has a 1.9 cu. ft. capacity, and has variable temperature settings of anything from 75*F to 230*F, and humidity controls from crisp to moist. Gross. It also has a half-rack so you can store more on the inside, and has ball-bearing glides so it pulls out and closes smoothly while making that soothing whoosh noise.
6. 24" GE Monogram Undercabinet Wine Reserve
We also have the 24" GE Monogram Undercabinet Wine Reserve (ZDWR240HBS). With a cool MSRP of $2000, undercabinet wine refrigerators are notoriously tricky because of their front-facing venting needs. If you suffocate refrigerators, even small ones, (like humans) they die.
This fridge features cooling settings suitable to red or white wines, full-extension sliding racks with both horizontal and vertical storage, and has a capacity of 5.5 cu. ft, or 57 bottles.
Hannibal also, apparently, does not believe in dishwashers-panel-ready, drawer-style or otherwise.
What he does believe in? Is coffee, apparently:
7. Royal Paris Vacuum Balancing Coffee Siphon by Royal Coffee Maker
This, dear Fannibals, is a Royal Paris Vacuum Balancing Coffee Siphon, specifically noted by Bryan Fuller to be crafted by Royal Coffee Maker.
Handmade by artisans with affordable materials such as genuine Baccarat Crystal, malachite, copper, obsidian, azurite, and plating of silver and 24k gold, these start at the low, low price of approximately $15,500.
Hannibal's model is the Royal Classic finished in silver, on a Piano Black base. It is, perhaps surprisingly or unsurprisingly, the most tasteful and least ostentatious of all available models.
Tumblr media
This brings the approximate total of all Hannibal's kitchen appliances, plus or minus a few of the minor ones, to $45,000.
8. Additionally in his stolen borrowed home in Florence: La Cornue 43" CornuFé Range
In 1908, in the heart of Paris, Albert Dupuy ignited the flame of elite cuisine. It was there that Dupuy premiered the world's first convection oven. At the time, most ovens were mere flat-topped cavities that held racks suspended over a fire. The majority of people simply considered cooking to be heating food to eat. But Dupuy pondered: "What does it really mean to cook?" He developed his oven with a vaulted ceiling to usher heat around the food, rather than trapping it to burn beneath. To enable optimum precision, the oven drew upon the city gas lines that were winding their way to homes and street lamps throughout the City of Light. Dupuy christened the oven La Cornue after the French term cornue - the system for refining the gas that warmed the new creation.
Each range is made by hand and the labor is intensive. Each worker is a specialist, understanding the greater goal.
However they are not just craftsmen, but companions to each range along its journey from inception to crated final product. They are experts in steel, copper and brass, inspired by great design, working as a team to create an inspired tradition.
True excellence can only be achieved when every step in the process is in pursuit of perfection.
For over 100 years, La Cornue has continued to build upon Albert's initial convection innovation and they've expanded the designs and introduced new styles. As a result, the name La Cornue is supposed to represent a renowned spirit.
Hannibal's version runs about $10,000.
Middle- and upper-class families were using contraception from the 1920s to control the size of their families but fear of working-class women's sexuality meant that it would not be until 1930 that the Ministry of Health allowed publicly funded nurses and doctors to give contraceptive advice to poor married women and then only on medical grounds.
Hello! My goal is to become a more educated and well rounded person. I already read a lot and I am in the process of getting a degree, but I would like to upgrade my knowledge to be able to hold conversations with people from higher circles. My goal is to marry a very financiall stable man. I want to be cultured and well educated. Can you please share some tips? <3
Hi love! It's great to hear that you want to become more educated and develop yourself as a person while getting your degree. Reading does wonders for leveling up – so that's a great habit to integrate into your day/week! Here are some tips to help with engaging in conversations with high-status individuals:
Understand Etiquette & Social Rules: Hold eye contact, relax and maintain good posture, keep conversation topics light and intellectual (favorite restaurants, social plans, cultural events, movies/TV shows, favorite products, travel, weekend activities, interesting professional opportunities/experiences), don't criticize others, avoid taboo subjects, keep an open mind when discussing more controversial topics, practice active listening, chew with your mouth closed, etc.
Learn About High-Status Organizations, Industries, and Activities: There are many subgroups here, so I think it depends on the types of people you're interacting with. However, knowing about art, history, culture, and a general sense of how certain industries (real estate, law, tech, consulting, product development, hospitality, etc.) work can help you engage in conversation with a greater number of people from this world. Understand how membership clubs or charity boards and personal styling/interior design services work. Learn about sports like tennis, horseback riding, and golf.
Educate Yourself & Develop Opinions On Trends/The Future of Different Aspects of The World: Again, this is a broad topic, but if you have an insightful, detailed opinion on where the future of smartphones, travel, social media, fashion or food trends, financial services, work culture, or lifestyle habits, people from influential circles gain the most by listening and confiding in those who have a useful take on matters they're invested in.
"I thought we got rooms to ourselves," said Teppic.
Chidder, who had laid claim to the least exposed bed in the whole refrigerator, nodded at him.
"Later on," he said. He lay back, and winced. "Do they sharpen these springs, do you reckon?"
Teppic said nothing. The bed was in fact rather more comfortable than the one he'd slept in at home. His parents, being high born, naturally tolerated conditions for their children which would have been rejected out of hand by destitute sandflies.
