Gothic Horror HCs But Using The Penny Dreadful Versions As Well Cus I Like Them
Hello, So recently I have been really obsessed with 1800s gothic horror literature.
My favorite books are (in order);
1. Frankenstein The Modern Prometheus
2. The Picture Of Dorian Gray
3. The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde
4. Dracula
So imagine my fucking excitement when I heard there was a show that used THOSE EXACT FOUR BOOKS!!!!
Anyway I thought I'd take the time to talk about my favorite characters from the books/show and hcs I have for them all.
Now massive Trigger Warning for some ableism/sanism from the victorian era but also current day, and also queermisia.
All of these characters are canon ND I believe based off of their canon "madness" and I also believe they were all queer men.
----
Victor Frankenstein
Tumblr media
Victor is a trans man you must understand this. He literally has postpartum depression in the book. He is also forced into an arranged marriage with a woman but has so much more chemistry with his best friend Henry Clerval. I think he's gay and his love for both Elizabeth and Lilly are just comphet. (He loves Elizabeth like a sister tho).
Victor is also disabled in the book. In Penny Dreadful he also has asthma! I also hc Victor is autistic. In the book he has a special interest in alchemy and science. He info dumps about poetry and clocks a lot in Penny Dreadful lmao. He's also just awkward like me fr fr. There was also a rlly funny scene in Penny Dreadful where everyone noticed this one character was a trans woman and made a "face" of surprise. Victor never did because honestly I don't think he fucking noticed. Which made me laugh because I didn't either.
Dorian Gray
Tumblr media
This man is just me sometimes and I kinda hate it. Definitely has BPD. He treats life as a fantasy and has a hard time applying reality to reality. He also will love you one second and can hate you so passionately the next. Henry Wotton is most definitely his favorite person. There's also an entire chapter in the book dedicated to talking about his hyperfixations. Dorian is also bisexual! He falls in love with a few women in the book and Penny Dreadful. But also many men! Oscar Wilde was gay and put a lot of himself into Dorian lmao.
Henry Jekyll
Tumblr media
Look the guy with daddy issues. Seriously out of all the things they chose to adapt for Penny Dreadful this made me laugh the most (in a good way). It's a random throwaway line in the book but I'm glad they kept it because his father leads to Henry's toxic mindset. Henry feels the need to be respectful in high society and not indulge his "indecent" thoughts. These thoughts include things like murder but also homosexual desires. The man is gay, love that for him. Don't let the musical fool you. I think his other violent thoughts come from OCD intrusive thoughts. As a median system I do also relate to the duality he feels. But I also would be careful ever putting a plural reading on Jekyll and Hyde for obvious reasons.
Robert Montague Renfield
Tumblr media
Oh Renfield so much to say about you my man. (This is where that TW comes in handy)
Ok so the R.M. of his name standing for "Robert Montague" is ONLY from the new 2023 movie "Renfield". Renfield never had a first name because Bram Stoker was an ableist dick who saw Renfield as less than human for his mental illness. So out of spite of him and love for Renfield I hc his name to be Robert in all versions. This isn't to praise the new movie for its handle on mental illness though. While I absolutely adore the movie and it's camp and message I can't look past the ableism. It constantly demonizes NPD and for the topic of our discussion writes out Robert's mental illness. Robert in the book has psychosis and periods of mania and depression. Honestly I'll have to reread his sections of the book soon and see if I change my opinion because I had a hard time thinking of a label for him. Anyway I think he has Bipolar! But this is why I prefer Penny Dreadful over Renfield 2023 for the character. He gets to be mentally ill and still do a good thing and be just like everyone else in the show (not good or bad, just gray). On the topic of Renfield 2023 again I also think they (Drac and Ren) are ex lovers lmao, I mean it's literally framed like that they just don't have the balls to say it. I now just read every version like this. So yes another Bi king! Wow this ended up mainly being about Renfield whoops.
----
So yeah as you can see I really like the books and Penny Dreadful. I loved that Penny Dreadful wasn't scared to make its characters ND coded like a certain someone *cough* Renfield 2023 *cough* and be faithful to the OGs!
Anyway I'm not a medical professional lmao, I've just researched a lot of stuff trying to figure out my own problems and it's also smth I take an interest in. The queer stuff I am a professional tho /j.
Was this post messy? Oh yeah, wouldn't have it any other way.

Blorbos Over the Years
@itoshisoup you are responsible for this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm not quite sure where to start with my explanations, so I'm just going to dive in.
1. Kevin Arnold from The Wonder Years. The first character I remember having a crush on at the tender age of 7.
2. Sean Hunter, Boy Meets World. 12 year old me really loved his long hair and "bad boy" image.
3. Jordan Catalano, My So-Called Life. The Original Bad Boy. I was 15.
4. Aladdin. I think Every girl my age had a crush on him. He's out of order on the chart. I loved him at 11.
5. Romeo Montague. Well, Leonardo DiCaprio in general, but mostly for the Romeo + Juliet of 1996. I was 15.
6. AJ, Empire Records. He was going to tell Corey(Liv Tyler) at 1:37 exactly that he loved her. Also a teenage crush (16-17)
7. Tidus, Final Fantasy X. His English dub made me crazy in the best way. I needed to run my fingers through his hair and make out with him in the lake at macalania. I was 19 when I met him for the first time.
8. Auron, Final Fantasy X. Rough and stoic and quiet and strong, he paved the way for future blorbos. 21-23 years old.
9. Lulu, Final Fantasy X. Part of my bisexual awakening. She's so beautiful. Same age span as Auron.
There's a dry spell here between 23 and 30-ish, a sad, blorbo-less time when I was suffering in a toxic marriage and had a quarter life crisis. Honorable mentions at this time go to Bam Margera of Jackass and Brad Pitt- specifically the Brad Pitt of Interview With the Vampire and Legends of the Fall. Don't ask. I'm not sure either.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10. In 2019, I started playing Mr. Love Queen's Choice and fell HARD for Lucien. I was 38.
11. Victor won over Lucien soon thereafter. He's licherally perfect.
12. JUMIN HANNNNNNNNNN. We met during covid. I was 39 and locked in my house, daydreaming constantly. My husband and I had a 63 day streak of sex because I was constantly horny. I stayed up all hours of the night listening to music and writing fanfiction and wishing Jumin was real. It was a problem. Obsession doesn't even begin to describe what I felt for him.
13. Jihyun Kim. Equally as obsessed with him. Joined 4 Zines and wrote shit tons of fanfiction for him. Cried endless tears for him. 39-40 years old.
14. Aki. Oh, my Aki. My quiet, angry, strong, complicated, blue-eyed, black haired Aki. I want to smoke and have coffee with him every morning for the rest of our lives.
15. Megumi. Another dark haired pretty, pretty boy. I felt like a teenager with a crush when I first saw him.
16. Nanami. My stoic, overworked, but secretly sensitive blonde. I want to live by the ocean with him and walk barefoot in the sand every night.
17. Kishibe. My mid-life crisis asshole. He's dirty and crude but strong and just doesn't take any shit. I love his outlook on life and need him to let me ride him.
18.Higuruma. Love of my life. I've arrived at peak blorbo consumption here. He's everything I want and more. He is all of these men combined and then some. He is the epitome of blorbo-ness.
If you read all of this, call me. I'll take you out to lunch. (This was crazy fun though. Thanks Mao Mao).

Alexandra, Princess of Wales, Colonel the Honourable Oliver Montagu and Prince Albert Victor photographed in Scotland, 1876.
'Oliver Montagu came', a very distinguished visitor wrote from Dunrobin Castle in 1876, 'his devotion to the Princess is a proof of a loyal friendship, as well as of a romantic and chivalrous devotion to a good and beautiful woman.'
Queen Alexandra by G. Arthur
[...] One of the guests was Oliver Montagu, whom Bertie had appointed equerry. Alix described him to Minnie as 'my good friend O'. She was still endearingly loyal to 'my Bertie', but she had come to depend on Montagu's companionship. Outwardly loud and bumptious, Montagu had a softer, religious side, and he became Alix's devoted admirer. To conduct a platonic flirtation with a gallant officer, a cavalier whom she always danced the first after-dinner valse, made her feel adored without being threatened.
Bertie: a life of Edward VII by Jane Ridley
Alix seems to have found some consolation in the support of Oliver Montagu. The gallant Montagu, Lady Antrim recalled, 'shielded her in every way, not least from his own great love, and managed to defeat gossip. Oliver Montagu was looked upon with awe by the young as he sauntered into a ballroom, regardless of anything but his beautiful Princess, who as a matter of course always danced the first after-supper waltz with him. But she remained marvellously circumspect.'

A woman accused with her husband of living in Hawaii under the stolen identities of dead babies will remain behind bars pending their trial, a U.S. magistrate judge ruled Wednesday.
According to prosecutors, Walter Glenn Primrose and Gwynn Darle Morrison are the real names of the couple who have been fraudulently living for decades under the stolen identities of Bobby Edward Fort and Julie Lyn Montague. Prosecutors say Primrose spent more than 20 years in the Coast Guard as Bobby Fort, where he obtained secret-level security clearance. After retiring in 2016, he used the secret clearance for a job as a U.S. defense contractor, prosecutors said.
There is no indication in court documents why the couple in 1987 assumed the identities of deceased children, who would have been more than a decade younger than them.
Previous rulings have kept them detained.
At a hearing Wednesday asking a judge to release the wife, she identified herself as "Lyn Montague."
"I understand the court's concern - the allegation is my client has used a false and fraudulent name for almost her entire life and we cannot verify who she is," her attorney Megan Kau said.
Kau said she is not accused of committing a crime using an allegedly stolen identity.
As Kau's client was led out of the courtroom after U.S. Magistrate Judge Kenneth Mansfield's ruling, she said, "As expected." She referred to the situation as, "this whole idiotic thing."
A hearing for a similar request by her husband hasn't been scheduled. He has a new attorney who said Tuesday that he won't be ready in time for the couple's May 22 trial date. The newly appointed lawyer, Marc Victor, said he doesn't think he will be ready anytime this year.
Kau said she is contemplating requesting a separate trial from her client's husband.
There was no mention in court Wednesday of Russian spy intrigue prosecutors introduced when the couple were arrested last year.
Tumblr media
A search of the couple's home in Kapolei, a Honolulu suburb, turned up Polaroids of them wearing jackets that appear to be authentic KGB uniforms, an invisible ink kit, documents with coded language and maps showing military bases, prosecutors said at the time.
But prosecutors last month asked that jurors not hear about the uniforms, and a judge last week agreed.
The couple have pleaded not guilty to conspiracy, false statement in a passport application and aggravated identity theft.
According to a criminal complaint obtained by Hawaii News Now, Primrose was allegedly issued a total of five U.S. passports under the identity of Bobby Fort. Morrison was issued a total of three U.S. passports under the name of Julie Montague, the complaint says.
In a court filing last year, prosecutors released details from a small portion of what they said is Morrison's journal, Hawaii News Now reported.
The entry is titled: "12 things I would take with me if I had to flee my present life (Again?)"

Sam Jeffe and Cary Grant in Gunga Din (George Stevens, 1939)
Cast: Cary Grant, Victor McLaglen, Douglas Fairbanks Jr., Sam Jaffe, Eduardo Ciannelli, Joan Fontaine, Montagu Love, Robert Coote, Abner Biberman, Lumsden Hare. Screenplay: Joel Sayre, Fred Guiol, Ben Hecht, MacArthur, based on a poem by Rudyard Kipling. Cinematography: Joseph H. August. Art direction: Van Nest Polglase. Film editing: Henry Berman, John Lockert. Music: Alfred Newman.
Gunga Din is imperialist and racist, and its title character is an example of the Magical Negro trope, the person of color who saves the white folks' asses. It's embarrassing to see actors like Sam Jaffe (in the title role), Eduardo Ciannelli, and Abner Biberman in brownface. So we have to swallow a lot that's objectionable to still enjoy Gunga Din. We typically evade the issue of a film's content and message by emphasizing style and technique, and Gunga Din is loaded with style and technique, from the comic performances of Cary Grant, Victor McLaglen, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. to the crisp cinematography of Joseph H. August, convincingly turning the Sierra Nevada into the Khyber Pass. The movie was originally supposed to be directed by Howard Hawks, when Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur developed a story out of Rudyard Kipling's poem. They did it by plagiarizing their own play The Front Page, which hinges on a man (in this case two men) trying to prevent his friend and co-worker from going off and getting married. Hawks might have made a better movie: He would almost certainly have given Joan Fontaine more to do in her role as the woman who is trying to take Fairbanks away from Grant and McLaglen. But he was fired from the film and replaced with George Stevens. Still Hawks got his chance to work with Hecht and MacArthur's original story when he made the best of all screen versions of The Front Page as His Girl Friday in 1940. The real star of Gunga Din (as well as His Girl Friday)  is Grant, playing at peak clown and loving it, while still pulling off the dashing hero. It's interesting to compare Grant's performance in this movie with the one he gave for Hawks in Only Angels Have Wings, which was released the same year, in which Grant is more serious as the troubled boss of a group of pilots flying the mail across the Andes.

Wow today's episode was a lot.
Chase: Dammit kid... I hate it for him. He never should have found out that way. Like, i don't blame Tracy because she honestly thought he already knew (and he should have been told sooner) but damn.
And having a meltdown like that? It hurt to see because that was me just a few months ago when my grandpa passed. I wanna hug him so bad.
Sprina: I hate that they must return to PC, but that's what the script demands. Hopefully this trip really solidified their relationship so that Portia and Esme can't fuck it up. (Or rather, any attempt falls flat.)
Also his heart eyes every time he looked at her!!!
Gregory and Alexis: unpopular opinion maybe, but I do enjoy wholesome friendships. And this is more wholesome than some of the friend groups on this show.
Charlotte: When the fuck did she even get close to Victor? I thought it was canon that she hated him for keeping her separated from Valentin? That she blamed him for her dad's "death"? When did the turn around happen? When did she start trusting him? (Is Helena's ghost or something possessing her through the cards? Weirder shit has happened.)
Valentin: I get that you as a father wanna protect your child, but you should at least tell Anna whats going on so Sonny's people won't accidentally hurt your child during her next vandalism session. Maybe get Charlotte therapy? And while I normally would never advocate for this, maybe search her room for things? Like a letter from your horrible sperm donor?
Gladys, Sonny: Im both glad and disappointed. Glad its out in the open and that Gladys knows she's been had and that Sasha will be okay.
However; Gladys was Sasha's guardian... Is that a moot point now? Will the judge just magically dissolve it after this? Who will take over for the interim if she must have one still?
Why can't Gladys stay and face justice for her crimes? She deserves to be sent to Pentonville or if you dont want tax payers giving her a life, he could have had her "taken for a permanent drive" instead of just back to Bridgeport. Like where's the scary mob boss people used to fear?
Sasha, Dante, Montague, Mac: Get him! Beat his ass! Take that syringe and get it tested!
Janice, you bitch, one single apology isnt enough, you best testify!
I want Montague to have a session with Sonny next. Except his had better be permanent. Or hell, turn off all the cameras and pretend not to notice anything at the holding cell and just let Cody beat him to death. Or use him for the horses to kick around when they get frustrated.
Sasha, baby you had better sue the fuck out of Ferncliff. You deserve to destroy them after everything they did to you. It's malpractice at best, a war crime against the Geneva Convention at worse. (Cruel and unusual punishments/torture)
