Alone

[Amaya/Sara, blind Sara, 237]

Sitting in her own dark room on the ship, her back straight and her legs criss-cross, Sara meticulously wrapped and unwrapped a satin ribbon around her wrist. She let the satin glide between her fingers and froze when she heard the soft hiss of her door. 

“Who’s there?” 

“Amaya. Hey, Sara.” 

Sara attempted to turn toward Amaya but her footsteps moved along. “Hi. What are you doing here?” She felt the bed dent in as Amaya came closer, listening to the rustling of fabrics. A hand traced her cheek for a moment, then fell into her lap. Free to take, free to ignore.

“I wanted to ask you a rather hard question.” 

“Well, go on then.” Sara took Amaya’s hand. 

“You’ve described death for me. Describe being blind for me, please?” Amaya squeezed Sara’s hand.

With a soft smile at Amaya’s genuine curiosity, Sara thought. “Alright. Think of the darkest place you’ve ever been. Completely alone, without any way to see.” She could hear Amaya take a deep breath, following along. “Now add your friends. Your friends can see through the darkness. You may never get out of the darkness but as long as you’re not alone, you’ll be okay.”

Amaya hugged Sara and without her balance, the two of them toppled over laughing. 

“You know I’ll always be here to guide you through the darkness right? As long as I live, you will never be alone.”
