1. Your Final Major Project
What is the title of your Project? What do you aim to produce? How does this relate to your work and ideas from your programme so far and how does it extend your knowledge, understanding and creative ability?
(guide: 150 words)
‘Exploring the self through history of arts iconography’. I aim to produce work that explores ‘the self’. Specifically, the attributes one wishes to project, as well as those that one would like to conceal. I plan on achieving this through a visual conversation, using iconography in art ranging from ancient to modern. I am intrigued by and intend to use and play with the symbolism of these objects, poses, and backgrounds; in order to gather a greater understanding of ‘the self’. I will be continuing to world build which I plan to execute through various forms of portraiture. Recommencing my exploration of narratives through surreal and playful imagery to embody a reality. I expect this to extend my knowledge of symbolism in the visual world, my understanding of myself and others, and to push my creative ability by using traditional imagery in a current, relevant, and honest way for myself and subject matter.
2. Influences, Research, Sources and Ideas
What are your influences, starting points and contextual references and how are they relevant to your ideas? What subject areas do you intend to research and what are the likely sources of information (media sources, museums, specific locations, performances, etc.) you plan to use? You do not need an extensive list in this section, but include your bibliography in the Appendix, clearly identifying all references including texts, periodicals, websites, etc.
(guide: 150 words)
My initial artistic influences are Tim Walker because of his exuberant world building using sculpture and set, Cindy Sherman due to her creation of narratives and character through costume and prosthetics, and William Blake owing to his narrative work in which his own iconography was created, as I intend to also do.
Potent symbolic imagery such as in Hieronymus Bosch’s Garden of Earthly delights, and folkloric work of the medieval period for example ‘the unicorn tapestries’. Are relevant to my exploration of ‘the self’ through symbolism and dream like world building. Through Academic references, books, documentaries, exhibitions, films, and gallery spaces I intend to research into visual iconography, religion, and gender. To enrich my knowledge and in doing so be able to create works not only symbolising ‘the self’ but having a conversation of what the subject’s self represents currently and historically. Hopefully exploring, gender, ‘morality’, religion, myth, and lore.
3. Techniques, Processes and Timescale
What techniques and processes do you intend to use? Describe the range of media and materials relevant to your project and how you may use them to explore and develop your ideas. Include aspects of studio practice, workshop procedures, or the use of particular equipment and software. Give an indicative timescale for your project and how you intend to plan your time in order to investigate, develop, produce and evaluate your project fully. This could be a daily or weekly schedule. (Please attach at the end of this form.)
(guide: 150 words)
I intend to use the studio photography room when creating film and photographic portraiture, so I can utilise the set lighting and take clear pictures to enhance the scene created. This will give me the freedom to explore different compositions and see how that effects the portrayal of ‘the self’. The objects I plan on creating to build these iconography based narratives will vary in material. I will make ceramic glazed sculpture to enhance the attributes of the certain objects, for example a pearl. I will use screen-printing to experiment with the images I have created, this medium will allow for a discussion with colour and sizing. Painting set backgrounds will allow for explorations into landscape iconography. The use of film with allow me to create a narrative not only through sculpture but a moving story with them. Using mud rock will enable me to play with size and create wearable work. Perfect for my dream-like world building.
4. Method of Evaluation
How will you critically review and analyse your work and determine if it is successful? How will you identify directions for ongoing development? Do you have a method to record the critical response to your ideas? How do you propose to assess the success of your Final Major Project and what will be your methods of evaluation?
(guide: 100 words)
I will critically review my work by continuously evaluating it, seeing if I have pushed it and myself to its fullest potential, visually and conceptually. Analysing it through its relevance, contextual, and visual strengths, realises successes and flaws and building upon them. The direction for my ongoing development will be identified by my interests in research and what media I find works well with my concepts. Continually evaluating the relevance of concept, context and material. Responses to my work and ideas will be found in tutorials and peer evaluations, which I will seek out weekly. This important information will be kept in my sketchbooks and blog. I plan to assess the success of my final major project by reflecting on all my work and writing an evaluation.
5. Appendix
Include an appendix for the bibliography and any other relevant material for your Final Major Project.
Compile an accurate bibliography before starting your project, that correctly acknowledges all references including texts, books, websites, magazines, films, documentaries, museums that you will study for initial research on your project.

Who is Guillermo del toro? The Scoope!
Guillermo del Toro is a Mexican Film director, screen writer, and producer. He was born in Guadalajara, Mexico on October 9, 1964. He began his love for film in high school where he would first learn about film and later get into special effect makeup. In his younger prime, Toro worked under famed special effect makeup artist Dick Smith, most famous for his work on the frightening set of “The Exorcist.” After working as a makeup supervisor for years, del Toro started his own directing and producing company. Toro was so fascinated with all his progression he then called his company Necropia. While evolving in his company, he took his talents to the next step and began directing in Horror films. Toro got married to his lovely wife, Lorenza Newton in 1986 and have two beautiful daughters. While starting up his film company and paving into the industry in Mexico, he had personal problems. In 1988 Toro’s father was kidnapped and held captive. He paid the kidnappers and then immediately made the decision to move his family to America.
He eventually won nine Ariel Awards from the Mexican Academy of Film including best picture, best director, best screenplay, and best original story and received the International Critics’ Week grand prize at the Cannes film festival for his films. According to Pettigrew, Ian, to anyone who has kept up with the number of projects that have in- volved Guillermo del Toro over the past decade (in film, television, video games, novels, children’s books, etc.), and the assistance he provides to other artists’ work he supports from his native Mexico and abroad, is surely amazed by the minefield of creativity and tireless work ethic that the director possesses. According to Editors, Magazine and Samuel Lewis, some of del Toro’s more notable films include the 2001 “The Devil’s Backbone,” “Blade II” in 2002, and “Hellboy” in 2004, which starred on of del Toro’s favorite actors, Ron Perlman. You will also see del Toro’s names rolling in the credits of movies like “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “Pacific Rim.” The director and producer, although most notable for spine-tingling tales, produced animated favorites like “Puss and Boots” and “Kung Fu Panda 2 (Pettigrew, Ian).
The two movies that will be discussed is “Pinocchio” and “Pan’s Labyrinth.” Pan Labyrinth is a dark fiction fantasy that took place in 1944 during the Spanish war. The movie is based on a little girl name Ofelia who is traumatized by her stepfather, a captain solider of the Spanish war who discovers that she is a princess from a magical mysterious underworld. Ofelia, in the end must make choices to save her mother and newborn baby brother. These mystical creatures guide her in all the choices that she makes but towards the end she made choices a hard choice, sacrificing herself or her brother. She chooses to end her life then her baby brother’s life (O, BRIEN, GABRIELLE).
Pan’s Labyrinth’s mix of fantasy, horror and melodrama won over both critics and dedicated fans of genre pictures, and this wide-ranging appeal made it the most commercially successful Mexican film at that point. It takes up del Toro’s signature tropes of family, children in danger, violence and brutality, and the burden of free will versus lack of control. He emphasizes the importance of choice (O, Brien, Gabrielle). This movie was based on selfish lessness. At the end of the movie Ofelia appears in a golden throne room. The king of the underworld says that she passed the final test, which was to choose to spill her own blood rather than that of her baby half-brother. According to Haynes, Clarence, Pan’s Labyrinth was the top gross foreign film to be released in America. Guillermo del Toro made 80 million dollars nationwide. The work was also a critical smash, ending up on many reviewers’ year-end lists and receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. It received five other Oscar nods as well, winning for art direction, cinematography, and makeup (Haynes, Clarence).
The next movie that I will be discussing is “Pinocchio.” Pinocchio American stop-motion animated musical fantasy film directed by Guillermo del Toro which was released in 2021. This film was based on Gris Grimly's design from his 2002 edition of the 1883 Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi (Wikimedia Foundation). Since the film released this year, Guillermo has not been nominated yet for any rewards for this movie. His budget for the film was 35 million dollars. He created the dark version of walt Disney's Pinocchio, in the film, Pinocchio did not listen to his father's direction. He was mean, rude, and like to be known as the trickster. Throughout the movie, he finds himself understand what is to be a real boy. Pinocchio learns that being a trickster can get you nowhere but trouble. According to an article by Julia, Pinocchio, Toro would compare his verson of Pinocchio to Frankenstein. He states that Pinocchio is a blank canvas in which learning the curve of what the world is and what being human is extremely attractive to do as a story,” according to CinemaBlend. Furthermore, Pan Labyrinth is similar to Pinocchio, life is about choices, understanding and growth. Guillermo del Toro was able to shows us that through these three films. This Oscor winner is not just known for his thrilling movies and spectacular makeup effects, he is also known to spread underlying truth about the world.

My ‘sweetest’ Favorite 2018
