Handmade Walnut Ink

Black Walnut
The walnut project yielded a quart of brown ink (boil the hulls, strain it with the big strainer, strain it again with the fine strainer. It goes on the paper as a medium brown, so perhaps I should simmer it down to reduce it and make it darker. Right now it looks like I have a quart of the most vile, over-brewed cowboy coffee you'd ever want to see.
I'm not sure ink was even a viable project for me, since I paint in oils. However, I'd been wanting to do it for several years, and perhaps I can use it as a wash under colored pencils or pastels. Sometimes - I just Want to Do a Thing. It cost nothing, so why not?
In other brown&black news, Marilla:

who is extremely spicy™ of temperament, and Meadow, who has the temper of a bowl of unflavored oatmeal, have decided they hate each other. And somehow Meadow is 'winning' whatever war this is? Which leads to Marilla sometimes being found fifteen feet up the poplar tree, looking aggrieved.

So, my last project for @graveyarddirt ‘s September Hagging Out has gone over into October.  I foraged so many persimmons and white walnuts that I just ran out of time last weekend to do the project I was really excited about--walnut ink.
This morning I foraged a whole box full of white walnuts.  The most I’ve gathered so far (and there are still more hanging in the tree).  I husked about 20 (armed with the foreknowledge to use gloves this time) and put them in a stainless steel pot and covered with water.  I also added a bit of rusted wire from some antique farming equipment that I found in the woods at my parent’s house many moons ago when I was still a kid.  Rusted metal is supposed to make the ink darker.  I brought it to a boil and dropped it to a simmer for about 2 hours.
Then I strained it into another pan, brought it back to a boil, and allowed it to simmer until reduced to half.  Then I added some rubbing alcohol to help prevent mold and strained it again, this time into two glass jars.

I spooned some onto my inkpad to test it and used a rubber stamp I had bought in a fit of optimism that this was all going to work!  And it did!
I plan on using the ink for Yule cards, ornaments, and wrapping paper.
Thank you @graveyarddirt for leading me into this foraging adventure!

You know how some corvids* use cars as really big, unnecessarily dangerous nutcrackers?
*documented in carrion crows living in Japan, but if you consider “Dude, trust me” a valid source, I saw rooks and jackdaws do this as well.
