bias tag game
tagged by @onlyoneofyouu. this was fun, but hard to pick 10 people!
You're going to pick 10 of your biases (or as many biases as you have and then fill in the rest of the spots with idols you like) and number them 1-10. Then answer the questions below! Try not to look at the questions before you make your list!
hueningkai (txt)
nine (onlyoneof)
bona (wjsn)
dongmyeong (onewe)
xion (oneus)
swan (purple kiss)
suhyeon (billlie)
kai (exo)
dk (seventeen)
sunmi (wonder girls)
questions
1. Between 7 and 5, who did you bias first?
suhyeon! i got into billlie from their debut but only got into oneus during march or april of last year.
2. Between 2 and 6, who are you more attached to?
nine. we're cousins now.
3. If you were to spend the day with either 3 or 1, who would you choose and what would you do?
hueningkai because i know he's a homebody who likes to stay in all the time and that's literally me. we'd just lie on the couch playing mobile games or visiting each other's animal crossing islands.
4. What is your favorite physical feature about 9?
he has a great nose. but also when he smiles while he's singing i just 🥹
5. What is your favorite part of 6's personality?
i really don't know anything about her personality honestly. i just think she's got a great voice.
6. If you were to tell 8 anything you wanted, what you would you tell them?
nothing. i would pass out on the spot the moment i saw him.
7. Between 1 and 2, whose closet would you raid?
definitely nine. there are a few shirts and sweaters he's worn that i want.
8. What is a style that you want to see 3 try?
i always like women in suits but she's already done that. but i mean, i wouldn't mind seeing it again. actually, dark blue hair would look cool on her.
9. Between 5 and 4, who are you closer to in height?
neither? both? they're twins.
10. Between 10 and 9, whose music do you like the best?
seventeen definitely has a strong discography and but for me sunmi/wg have fewer skips so i'll pick them.

sort of on the bts topic, not to bother you with discourse on them any longer, but just something I've been dying to share ever since I left fandom and twitter and cannot say on my own blog: for me it's also extremely bizarre how so many armys emphatically stress bts is now above or beyond Kpop. To the point that you would assume they loathe the south korean association - that other fandoms liking that specific genre of music from this specific country as it is, is juvenile or levels below bts, who have now broken into the US market.
I wonder if they realize how racist that can come off or simply do not care. I noticed just before abandoning bts altogether that this same thinking seeps into conversations of "who paved the way for kpop". for kpop to do what? kpop thrived and existed way before bts. but if your perception of kpop as meaningful or even at least valid form of entertainment hinges on western validation then I suppose you can call bts the golden boys but should also at the same time recognize there's something deeply troubling with your mode of thinking.
I was there to see fandom reactions when Twice spoke of bts and when WG's Sunmi spoke of bts. Armys have repeatedly been using those examples of two kpop artists simply answering earnestly a question asked about who catapulted kpop into US consciousness as proof of superiority over other groups and artists, as if bts have somehow "surpassed" the previously insurmountable "hindrance" of their korean-ness and managed to make something more of themselves. Meanwhile, and to be honest, fans of those two artists (and others) also felt slighted that their faves did not give that credit to themselves. I remember the outrage of both Twice and so many WG fans. I always wondered why? Why is this such an important question to so many people. It is SO strange. Kpop and its value (whatever that is to each person) does (and should not, in my humble opinion) revolve around the west or international fandom opinion. its why I had to leave twitter. the casual racism and lurking anti-asian sentiment passed off as fandom praise is rampant.
yeah i've talked about it at length before and gotten quite a few angry ppl in my inbox about it actually. it's terrifying how transparently colonial their mentality is and the sheer number of people repeating these narratives about korea. thousands of people repeating the same narrative makes it feel closer to being true even if it isn't. the worst is actually when they think they're experts on korean politics and culture and economy cuz they like a music group. a lot of them just hate korean people except for the 7 they chose it's scary.

block b & wonder girls for the ask game! 💖
bb:
Jihoon 💗 light of my life…. then zico (I know I’ll atone for my sins eventually) and then everyone else is on the same level. I kinda see block b as like one big humunculous tho and can’t imagine any of them without the others except zic at this point. Fave songs very different vibes so i can’t pick just one; no joke/mental breaker/her (makes me literally wanna twirl my hair I’m her!!! It’s me!! Songs to form a parasocial relationship with a defunct boyband to!!)
wg:
YUBIN!!! then sohee then lim then sunmi then yeeun then sunye. I’m not gonna count hyuna here.
Best song is loved!!!!!! The whole reboot album is so special but loved is literally that song to me

my first ever bias hyerim from wonder girls is so cooool <3 so basically her family all does taekwondo and she grew up in hong kong so she speaks english and some canto, she was added to wonder girls after sunmi left to go to school (shes the same age as sunmi) but then when sunye and sohee left and sunmi came BACK (this was for reboot/their band concept) hyerim stayed in until the disbandment. and she played guitar!! i play guitar :^) and she was a pioneer in godawful singrapping/talkrapping (see Back and Oppa from reboot, also her song with san e i cant remember the name but also fuck san e) but then yeah, wg disbanded and hyerim went to school and she became a translator!! shes done a few projects it seems the biggest one was the diary of anne frank !! which is so cool! and she married a taekwondo person who her family has known forever, she apparently was dating him even when she was in wonder girls so thats so huge for her :) all the wonder girls showed up or video called in for her wedding/wedding shower and i just found out she had a son in february :))) i am very proud of her i liked her a lot and i think she had a great offramp out of kpop into a life that seems really nice

This is variety long ask anon (😭 sorry) - to add some more context on variety casting and what user tvxl was saying in the replies, they are most definitely correct, but to my understanding, there are also other factors playing into who gets cast for what and whether they are considered suitable.
a very interesting concept I was told of was that of a "toneholder" idol cast in variety where multiple idols/people interact. I don't know if that makes sense, and I wish there was someone with more knowledge/experience than me to confirm if that's what it is called by SK staff in that line of work. but essentially it is either an idol that can keep the atmosphere going between all guests/idols or the 'link' between idols from different companies.
This is a thing PDs actively used to chase after both in variety and variety-adjacent shows - off the top of my head prime examples are Super Junior, Key, Taeyeon because half the industry are her fans, or from the TWICE girls Nayeon and Dahyun who are known for their energy/wit. Or more recently a couple of years ago, I don't know if you ever heard of it, when Running Girls came on which was not exactly variety but aimed partly for that feel, the PD of that show confirmed, for example, that WG's Sunmi specifically was chosen by the team because she is considered a bridge between most hoobaes and would help break the ice/keep the homely tone the show needed, hence the label she was given the 'mom' of the show. Hani too on that show was on the other side of that, chosen for similar reasons - come to think of it Hani and EXID in general are another example of good energy in variety.
What is further interesting about that example of Running Girls is that it was born out of and built around the idols themselves (I think the PD said she had that program in mind and she developed it around certain idols in her head that she thought would fit).
I think this will be extremely rare for 4th gen in a non- in house context, which is an awful shame. But they simply do not inspire to the point of creation.
When we were having this conversation with the crew it became evident they believe there aren't many such "toneholder" or really variety star idols to be found in 4th gen. A big part of that I think is the lack of what are considered meaningful interactions between other-company groups in 4th gen (though that's vicious cycle because if they can't get on enough variety they won't have enough of those interactions) and a sort of rigidness amongst them in music stages/performances. Both amicable relations and also friendly/playful competition (both of which were palpable in 2nd gen and some of 3rd gen) seem to lack substance in 4th gen, particularly in boy groups.
But, if you will, a sneaking suspicion/prediction I have is that variety-like programs will start migrating more towards YouTube (they have already) as they gain popularity, and 4th gen will probably first shine there, because it will require less interacting with more people in the industry and it will be more secluded, if that makes sense. The videos will also engage international fandom, which is huge in 4th gen, so...
Anyways thank you so much for letting me talk about this, I don't often as its considered fairly niche to some people and not too many of them are interested in the decision making process as I am but. Yeah. Thank you!
no thank YOU!! oh man i am so interested in this i could talk about this kind of niche industry stuff all day it's so fascinating.
the 'toneholder' position makes perfect sense, in terms of social logistics you would absolutely need it when you're bringing essentially a bunch of strangers together all the time. i'm not sure if 'moodmaker' has the same meaning but that's what i sometimes see idols get labelled as, but i'm pretty sure that's more of an internal/self applied designation that one that's actually used by production staff.
not sure if it's actually a correlation but what you said about fourth gens not inspiring pds to the point of creation, but it's really interesting that in that absence there's recently been two shows that i know were created around first gen idols: the hungry and the hairy for rain and seoul check in for hyori. i wouldn't have even thought to make that connection; it might just be a coincidence, but it also does feel like it's filling a spot.
yea youtube content has definitely taken off for late third/fourth gen groups, i think the biggest that i'm aware of rn is nct, they have a huge youtube apparatus that appears to be suckering in non-kpop fans too (i've seen a few people on twt say they thought johnny being an idol was a joke bc they found him through youtube). both jaejae's show and jessi's show are youtube exclusives and those are becoming popular promo stops, and i know one of changmin's few promo schedules for devil was on a youtube show. and i agree about how it's easier access because it's outside of the industry infrastructure. there's not the same amount of people working on youtube shows and the people working on those shows aren't really going to be working with each other in the same way as in broadcast.

wonder girls !
my first bias: i dont count hyuna since she was only in wg for a bit so it was sunmi :)
my current bias: yubin!
my album ranking: reboot (also my fave kpop album) > why so lonely > wonder world > the wonder years > the wonder years: trilogy > 2 different tears > wonder party
how i got into them: i stumbled across the why so lonely mv in 2017 and fell in love with them :(
which member would be my best friend: i think yeeun and i would get along the best since we have a pretty compatible style in many ways
something i associate with them: retro and band concepts…. they are literally unbeatable in that field (also jyp speaking at the beginning of songs…)

I really loved sunmi's comeback!! It's very soothing and groovy and sweet! I have to say Childhood feels a lot like a Why So Lonely ep track! I can hear it very clearly in my mind, and would love to hear a WG version even tho I know it will never happen lol. Overall I think it's a good release and my fav so far this summer.
omg yes i had the same thought!!! lots of why so lonely and esp yeeun vibes from childhood i rly enjoy it!
honestly sunmi did a great job with this cb she took a big step back from her recent cbs with the full throttle choreo heavy high budget kpop aesthetics and trend following song structures. tail was a triumph and ycswu was my fave mv of last summer but i'm glad she went back to the basics. it feels very sunmi, it's refreshing. fun concept and storyline, consistent and interesting visuals, very catchy simple song with a consistent vibe that goes through the whole thing. i haven't rly been keeping up with summer releases tbh i've been busy and kinda going through it all june 😂 loona is next on my list tho i might check out flip that tonight!
