Wit beyond measure is a man’s greatest treasure.
Intelligence, knowledge, wisdom. These were the traits that Ravenclaws valued most, but if the founder of your house could see you now, Rowena Ravenclaw would probably roll over in her grave.
Because there was nothing smart about falling in love with Theodore Nott.
In fact, it might be the most idiotic thing you’ve ever done in your entire life.
So why did it feel so bloody exhilarating?
To understand your descent into madness, it was prudent to trace the events back to point zero.
It was a rainy September afternoon, unusually dreary even for the Scottish Highlands. The first week of your return to Hogwarts had been chaotic to say the least. Between performing your prefect duties by showing the first years around the castle and dealing with the clueless third year that accidentally set off Weasleys' Wildfire Whiz-bangs in the Great Hall, you were absolutely knackered by the time Friday rolled around.
Unfortunately, you had no time to rest. Even though the term just started, you were already spending much of your nights studying until your eyes felt like they were going to fall out of your skull. Tonight, you were in the potions laboratory tackling a particularly stubborn advanced draught. No matter how hard you tried, you just couldn’t figure it out.
You dropped a sprig of wormwood into the cauldron and stirred counterclockwise then clockwise, just like the recipe instructed. The concoction bubbled to the surface. Holding your breath, you peered into the mixture with hope that this try would finally turn out successful. The potion turned a vibrant magenta color before exploding all over the front of your uniform.
Sadly, this was the closest you’d come to brewing the Angel’s Trumpet Draught. You sighed, wiping down your tie with a washcloth. It did nothing except make the mess worse. What you needed was a good old fashioned soak.
Luckily, you had access to the prefect’s bathroom on the fifth floor. During this time of night, it would be gloriously empty. Giving you the perfect opportunity to wallow in bubbles and self pity.
The trek from the dungeons to the fifth floor was fortunately uneventful. The hallways were dark and quiet, allowing you to slink off to the bathroom in peace. With a whisper of pine fresh, the pearly gates opened.
You turned on the faucets, setting the temperature just below boiling and dispensing herbs and fragrances into the tub. When you were finally satisfied, you quickly discarded your soiled clothes and eagerly stepped into the warm bath. The scent of rosewater and pink himalayan salt instantly relaxed you.
You sighed deeply, leaning against the marble tile and closing your eyes. This was definitely not the way you thought seventh year would go. Your last year at Hogwarts was supposed to be the highlight of your academic career. While your housemates fretted and fussed over quidditch games and blood moon balls, you refused to take your eyes off the prize.
Ever the diligent student, you had no interest in extracurriculars unless it brought you closer to your dream of becoming an accomplished potions master, which would hopefully catch the eye of the Most Extraordinary Society of Potioneers. Joining the prestigious group was a dream that you had been working towards since first year. Blood, sweat, and tears had gone towards achieving this goal, especially during your most recent break.
You spent the entire holiday interning at the Brewery, attending lectures at the Magical Division of the University of Oxford, and you had not only completed the assigned reading for your Advanced Potions class, but Professor Slughorn’s personal recommendations as well. All of that hard work should have placed you ahead of the curve, but your class rank remained the same as always.
Second.
Not first.
Never first.
No, that spot belonged to that rich infuriating smartass pureblooded motherfu—
“Theodore Nott,” you said, lacing your voice with as much venom as you could muster.
Between the pale moonstone pillars stood the source of your academic anguish. Theodore was dripping sweat, his green and silver quidditch jersey covered in mud and grime. The prefect badge pinned to his robe was barely visible, more brown than silver. His curly brown hair fell erratically across his cheekbones as he brushed a stray strand away to squint in the faint light.
The side of his mouth quirked up into a smirk when he recognized you. “You know, most people just call me Theo.” His gaze lingered on your form, which was barely covered by pink suds. “Especially those who know me rather intimately.”
You flushed in response. Amusement danced in his watercolor eyes, which seemed brighter now thanks to his sun kissed complexion. Knowing Nott, he probably spent his summer laying out in the Italian sun while attractive witches fed him grapes by hand. You didn’t get a tan like that from holing up in the English countryside with nothing but a boiling cauldron and a dusty textbook for company. He didn’t even have the audacity to pretend like he was worried about his class ranking. The bastard.
“Every rule has its exception, Theodore,” you gritted out. “Now get the fuck out.”
He cocked his head, sending a mass of wavy brown locks to spill to one side. “You’re right. Most people don’t usually say my name like it’s an unforgivable, but I guess you’re special in that way, diavolina mia.”
Little devil, Nott's idea of a fond nickname, irritated you to no end. Your annoyance only made him use it more. Gods, what a wanker.
“Are you deaf or just thick? This bathroom is occupied,” you huffed, sinking lower into the bubbles. “Leave before I scream bloody murder.”
Theo smirked. “Oh, I guarantee you’ll be screaming.” He kicked his shoes off, leaving them in a messy pile beside your own neatly arranged boots. “Though the only thing I’ll be murdering is that pu—”
The glare you sent his way would have sent lesser men running for the Forbidden Forest. “I’m serious, Nott. I’ve had a terrible fucking day and I am not giving up the bath.”
“Neither am I,” he countered. “Practice was brutal. I ate shit on the pitch and all I want to do is to reap my prefect benefits via bubble bath. I’m afraid you’re just going to have to learn how to share, sweetheart.”
You watched in stunned silence as he peeled off his jersey. The moonlight streamed through the glass stained windows, painting him in a surreal sort of light. There was no ounce of shame to be found in Theodore Nott as he stripped off his trousers and stood stark naked in the middle of the bathroom.
Look away, you thought. Look the fuck away now.
But like a moth to a flame, you found yourself horribly drawn to the cocky, arrogant, son of a bludger. His tall frame cut an imposing figure in the dark as slivers of moonlight danced across his ridiculously toned chest and well-defined abs. He was neither brawny nor scrawny, but somewhere in the middle, which unfortunately happened to be your sweet spot.
To make matters worse, the smug prick seemed perfectly aware of your ogling. You could’ve sworn Theo flexed as he stalked towards you. Unlike most boys his age, he wasn’t awkward or bumbling. Theo was confident in his body. Too confident.
You sighed. “Can you at least attempt to be decent?”
“Why? It’s not like you haven’t seen it all before.”
As if you needed a reminder of this ongoing tryst between you. Theo waded to your side, leaning his head back as the warm water sloshed around him. His eyes fluttered close, those thick lashes of his kissing the top of his cheekbones. Water trickled down his collarbone and you had to fight the urge to lean over and lick it off.
“I told you, last time was—“
“The last time,” Theo finished. “I’m perfectly aware, principessa. You say it every time.”
“I mean it this time.”
He cocked his head, flashing those hypnotizing eyes at you. “Oh?” Theo drawled slowly, reaching out to brush a wayward lock of hair that had escaped from your braid. “Did my poor little Ravenclaw finally find the courage to say no to the big bad Slytherin?”
Your breath hitched as he pressed his lips against your throat. “Fuck,” you whispered.
“Go on then, love,” Theo hummed against your skin. He kissed the sensitive spot beneath your earlobe, making you involuntarily arch into him. Slender fingers wrapped around the base of your throat, holding you in place. “Tell me what you want, diavolina.”
You sighed in defeat. “Stop being an asshole and kiss me, Nott.”
Theo grabbed the back of your head and crashed his lips against yours like a man starved. After months of going without, you came to the horrid realization that you craved this as much as he did. You crawled into his lap, straddling him as he gripped your hips hard enough to leave bruises.
I am a stupid girl, you thought. A stupid, horny girl who had no business snogging Theodore Nott.
One, you were bitter rivals. Two, Theo awakened a dangerous side of you that defied all logic. This whole fucked up situation started because of your lapse of judgment last winter. As always, Theo had said or done something to annoy you during class and in return you hexed his drink to taste like dragon dung. He retched for a week straight. Somehow Snape found out that you were to blame and placed both of you in detention.
One thing led to another in the potions classroom and you ended up with your skirt around your waist and Theo’s head between your legs. You quickly resolved that the only way to shut him up was to keep him occupied and occupied he was. Ever since then, the two of you had been at it like rabbits.
You thought that you would leave all of it behind in sixth year, but barely a week into this term and you were already repeating the pattern.
“I’ve been thinking about this all summer,” Theo groaned into your mouth.
“That’s cute, Nott,” you responded sarcastically. “Miss me over the holidays, did you?”
Theo rolled his eyes. “Oh, please. Don’t act like you haven’t been thinking about this too. You’ve been testier than a Hungarian Horntail since the minute you got off the platform. I could tell that you haven’t been properly fucked since our little impromptu goodbye in the broom closet last spring.”
“You’re absolutely repulsing.”
He smirked. “Then why are you pulling me closer?”
You rolled your eyes. “Shut up and fuck me before I change my mind.”
“You could say please.”
“I could,” you said with a shrug before gripping his cock and lining him up at your entrance. Theo groaned as you sank down into him with a satisfied little smirk. “But I won’t.”
The moan that came out of his mouth barely sounded human. “Fuck,” he said, burying his head in the crook of your neck. “How do you always feel so fucking good?”
You knew what he meant. As much as you hated to admit it, Theo was right. You hadn’t gotten properly laid since your last tryst. There had been other boys this summer, but none of them made you feel like this. Because sex with Theo wasn’t just sex. It was warfare. You fucked like you both had something to prove.
Even now, as you grinded your hips against him, Theo thrusted upwards with equal force like you were competing for the bloody house cup. You ran your fingers through his hair, frowning a little.
“What?” Theo asked.
“Did you cut your hair?”
He grinned as he trailed kisses along your jaw. “You don’t like it?”
“Less to hold onto.”
“Don’t worry dolcezza,” Theo chuckled darkly. He squeezed your thighs and pressed you against him roughly. “I’ll make sure to hold on tight for the both of us.”
You hummed in agreement before sinking down again, setting a steady rhythm as you rode him with reckless abandon. For someone who valued logic, every ounce of common sense you possessed went out the window when it came to this infuriating boy.
Maybe you were a masochist. But as Theo thrust sharply into you, the stupid little voice in your head said that you didn’t really mind the pain.
You moaned as Theo tilted your chin, capturing your lips with his. It was a clash of tongue and teeth as you fought for dominance, putting your bodies to the test. He knew exactly what buttons to press, which sensitive spots to hit, how to challenge you physically and mentally.
“Gods, right there.” You whimpered, digging your fingernails into his back. Theo’s hypnotizing eyes snapped to yours, piercing through every layer until you felt even more bare than you already were. “Don’t fucking stop, please.”
He smirked. “So you do have bedside manner after all.”
“Not for you,” you said as you grinded down hard, making Theo bite into your shoulder.
“Salazar fucking save me,” he grunted.
“Your founder can’t save you now, Nott.”
“Cruel, ruthless woman.” Theo looked up at you like he was praying to the stars. His movements stilled as your gazes collided. “Tell me you missed this. Tell me that no one else makes you feel like this.”
You whined at the loss of friction. “You’ve picked a shit time to get all sentimental on me, Nott.”
“It’s not sentiment, it’s the truth,” Theo declared, thrusting lazily. “And I want to hear you say it.”
“Why?”
“Call it curiosity,” he said casually. “I want to know if I measure up to the boys back in Oxford.”
Not even close, you thought. But you were not about to admit that out loud.
“Curiosity killed the cat, you know.”
Theo chuckled before sinking his teeth into your neck. “But I’m not a cat, little bird. I’m a snake and I’m coiled around you ready to strike if you say the word.”
You shivered slightly. This constant back and forth, all the bickering and banter, was just you and Theo’s sick and twisted version of foreplay. Gods, you fucking missed it.
“Fine,” you grumbled. “Theodore Nott, you are an infuriating little shit but you fuck like an absolute demon. I missed sneaking around with you in the broom closet, the charms classroom, the astronomy tower, and wherever else we managed to defile in this bloody castle. Is that what you wanted to hear?”
The shiteating grin on his face almost made you want to take it all back, but then he flipped you over, laying you down on the cold marble tile and staring at you with so much lust in his eyes that you felt the depths of his desire in your core. He crawled over you, water trickling down his tanned skin.
“Close enough,” he remarked before hiking your leg over his shoulder and burying himself so deep that you clawed the edge of the tub to keep yourself from slipping.
The rest of it was a blur of skin on skin as Theo unleashed himself on you. His mouth, his fingers, his cock were all just tools of seduction that he wielded with lethal precision.
The pleasure washed over you in waves, crashing again and again as he made you cum not once, not twice, but a total of three times. By the time he reached his peak, you were so exhausted that the two of you collapsed in the dark.
You laid side by side, staring up at the domed glass ceiling in stunned silence. After a moment, Theo turned over to face you.
“So?”
“So what?”
“Did I manage to knock that stick out of your arse?”
You rolled your eyes, pushing off the tile. “And that’s my cue to leave.”
“I’m kidding. I’m good, but I’m not that good,” Theo teased, following closely behind as you put your clothes back on. He eyed the bright magenta stain on the front of your uniform. “What happened there? Did you murder some poor unsuspecting pygmy puff?”
“No, but I did a number on the potions lab,” you lamented with a sigh. “That stupid Angel’s Trumpet Draught is bloody impossible to brew.”
“That old thing?” Theo asked, pulling out a fresh set of clothes from his quidditch bag. “I finished it ages ago.”
You gaped, nearly tumbling over your own skirt. “How? I followed the recipe word for word and this disastrous stain was all I managed to achieve.”
“Sometimes you have to go off the book,” he replied. “Experiment a little.”
“No thanks, I’d rather keep all my limbs intact.”
“I think you’re doing a rather splendid job of endangering yourself all on your own,” Theo said sarcastically. He cocked his head as you slipped on your boots. “I’ll make you a deal. I’ll show you how to brew the draught in exchange for a favor.”
You narrowed your eyes in suspicion. “What kind of favor?”
“That’s for me to decide and for you to accept.”
“I’d rather not give an egomaniac a nuclear advantage.”
Theo rolled his eyes. “Do you want my help or not, diavolina?”
“Fine,” you said with a sigh. “But only because I’m desperate.”
“Words every bloke is dying to hear.”
Without a word, he tossed a mass of balled up fabric in your direction. “What’s this?”
“A jumper, an article of clothing generally worn to retain warmth in colder climates,” Theo deadpanned.
“I know what a jumper is, you tosser. Why are you giving it to me?”
“Because, you’ll get a cold walking around like that,” Theo explained with a longsuffering sigh as though you were a clueless first year. The corners of his mouth quirked up. “Plus, I can see your nipples through your blouse and as much as I enjoy the view, I doubt that flashing Filch is at the top of your bucket list.”
“You truly are appalling,” you replied, shrugging the slightly faded jumper on. The thing was so worn that you couldn’t even make out the inscription on the front. The fabric swallowed you whole, skimming the top of your thighs. It also smelled like sea salt and smoke and boy. One boy in particular.
“You’re welcome, sweetheart.” He grinned, showing off those stupid little dimples of his. “Meet me in the potions lab tomorrow. Eight o’clock sharp, just like old times. And bring a muffin.”
“For the draught?’
“No, for me.” Theo said, holding the door open. “I’ll need motivation if I’m spending my Saturday morning with you.”
You slipped into the hallway and flipped him the bird. His laughter followed you in the dark like an annoying shadow.
“See you tomorrow, my little pygmy puff!”

Hi, just wanted to drop by to say that you’re an incredible writer, and While Mighty Oaks Do Fall is my favourite fic of all time! Thank you so much for creating it and sharing it with us <3 And I was also just wondering - you drew on Florence and the Machine for where the stars do not take sides, specifically ‘100 Years’, so was While Mighty Oaks inspired by ‘Which Witch’ at all? I always think of it when I listen to that song!
Thank you! You know what, it wasn't on the playlist, but now that you've mentioned it... it definitely should go on my MO playlist!
Florence and the Machine: 'Which Witch'
And it's my whole heart Weighed and measured inside And it's an old scar Trying to bleach it out And it's my whole heart Deemed and delivered a crime I'm on trial, waiting 'til the beat comes out
Who's a heretic now?
-
I'm not beat up by this yet You can't tell me to regret Been in the dark since the day we met Fire, help me to forget
-
Chained and shackled, oh All that gravel, oh It's a pity, oh Never to return But I never learn It's a pity, oh
...
And some of the extracts I've previously posted for writing While Mighty Oaks Do Fall:
NEEDTOBREATHE: ‘Testify’
Come to the fountain, and  Let me hear you testify
-
Leonard Cohen: ‘Hallelujah’
And even though it all went wrong I’ll stand right here before the Lord of Song With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
-
Leonard Cohen: ‘Anthem’:
I can’t run no more With that lawless crowd While the killers in high places say their prayers out loud But they’ve summoned, they’ve summoned up a thundercloud They’re going to hear from me
-
Regina Spektor: ‘Après Moi’
I must go on standing You can’t break that which isn’t yours I must go on standing I’m not my own, it’s not my choice
-
Sara Bareilles: ‘Eden’
Walking in the garden was a serpent-shaped heart and he told me What is broken cannot show,  And less than beautiful is worse than unholy
Idolized my innocence Stole it from me in the end Now I’m wide awakened and still paying for the poison they sold me
-
Sara Bareilles: ‘Saint Honesty’
We’re collecting evidence Of one remarkable storm How wild it was to find it, finally feel the climate Instead of only staying dry and warm
Rain on us, Saint Honesty Salvation is coming in the morning But now, what we need Is a little rain on our face from you, sweet Saint Honesty
-
Billy Joel: ‘Only the Good Die Young’
Well they showed you a statue  Told you to pray  Built you a temple and locked you away  But they never told you The price that you’d pay  For things that you might have done

Hatred. Lust. Obsession. Death. (BxA Playlist)
I worked on this...all day. Combed through almost 100 songs. It's my first time doing something like this, but I had to get my feelings and thoughts on this ship out somehow. Thank you to @a-for-alternative for the inspiration and feedback. I hope you enjoy.
Hatred
Afraid - The Neighbourhood
You're too mean, I don't like you
Fuck you, anyway
You make me wanna scream at the top of my lungs
It hurts but, I won't fight you
You suck, anyway
You make me want to die, right when I
When I wake up, I'm afraid
Somebody else might take my place
I Get It - CheVelle
How dare you catch me counting?
How dare you call at all?
How dare you call this suffering?
How dare you call at all?
You're right, I get it
It all makes sense, you're the perfect person
So right, so wrong
Let's all live in your imaginary life
You Don't Know Me - Son Lux
I feel you tracing my scars
But you don't know me
You don't know me at all
I see you down on your knees
But you don't own me
You don't know me at all
Rose - A Perfect Circle
So no longer will I
Lay down, play dead
Play your doe in the headlights locked down and terrified
Your deer in the headlights shot down and horrified
When push comes to pull comes to shove
Comes to step around this self-destructive dance
That never would've ended 'til I rose, I roared aloud
Here I will, I am
You Know My Name - Chris Cornell
I've seen angels fall from blinding heights
But you yourself are nothing so divine
Just next in line
Arm yourself because no-one else here will save you
The odds will betray you
And I will replace you
You can't deny the prize it may never fulfill you
It longs to kill you
Are you willing to die?
The coldest blood runs through my veins
You know my name
Dance With The Devil - Breaking Benjamin
Trembling, crawling across my skin
Feeling your cold dead eyes
Stealing the life of mine
I believe in you
I can show you that I can see right through all your empty lies
I won't last long
In this world so wrong
What If I Say Please - Late Night Alumni
Cry your premeditated tears
So tenderly, so insincere
Such feigned, calculated reasons
These warm smiles, they're freezing
So don't appeal me parading like a pantomime, I mean
It's unfeeling and I'm unwilling; let me be
What if I say please?
Girl With One Eye - Florence + The Machine
I slipped my hand under her skirt
I said don't worry, it's not gonna hurt
Oh, my reputation's kind of clouded with dirt
That's why you sleep with one eye open
But that's the price you'll pay
I said, hey, girl with one eye
Get your filthy fingers out of my pie
I said, hey, girl with one eye
I'll cut your little heart out ‘cause you made me cry
I Know Where You Sleep - Emilie Autumn
Fake, crawl, search, kill, fake, crawl, search, kill
Oh my god oh my god, I touched you?
I can never live it down, I can never live it down!
God save the queen, I loved you!?
I can never live it down, I can never live it down!
Oh, oh, I fucked you?
Welcome Home - Coheed and Cambria
But if you really loved me, you would have endured my world
Well you're just as I presumed
A whore in sheep's clothing
Fucking up all I do
Yeah and if so here we stop
Then never again will you see this in your life
Loveust
The Walk - Imogen Heap
That's where this ends
No mistakes, no misbehaving
Oh, I was doing so well
Could we just be friends?
I feel a weakness coming on
No, it's not meant to be like this
Not what I planned at all
I don't want to feel like this
So that makes it all your fault
I Caught Myself - Paramore
You got it, you got it
Some kind of magic
Hypnotic, hypnotic
You're leaving me breathless
I hate this, I hate this
You're not the one I believe in
With God as my witness
Now when I caught myself, I had to stop myself
I'm saying something that I should have never thought of you,
You're pushing and pulling me down to you
But I don't know what I want
Tear You Apart - She Wants Revenge
Either way he wanted her and this was bad
He wanted to do things to her it was making him crazy
Now a little crush turned into a like
And now he wants to grab her by the hair and tell her
I want to hold you close, skin pressed against me tight
Lie still, and close your eyes girl
So lovely, it feels so right
I want to hold you close
Soft breasts, beating heart
As I whisper in your ear I want to fucking tear you apart
I Get Off - Halestorm
I get off on you
Getting off on me
Give you what you want
But nothing is for free
It's a give and take
Kind of love we make
When the line is crossed
I get off
Gingerbread Man - Melanie Martinez
I'm the icing covering his body
I wanna hold him so close, so tightly
Baby, how do I say this politely?
Love me harder and don't be nice, please
I wanna feel your crumbs on my body
I want to break you in pieces, fight me
Baby, don't be so scared of biting
Want to eat each other into nothing
Hundred - The Fray
Its hard I must confess
But I'm banking on the rest to clear away
Cause we have spoken everything
Everything short of I love you
You right where you are
From right where I am
Somewhere between
Unsure and a hundred
Third Eye - Florence + The Machine
Cause there's a hole where your heart lies
And I see can it with my third eye
And though my touch, it magnifies
You pull away, you don't know why
'Cause your pain is a tribute
The only thing you let hold you
Wear it now like a mantle
Always there to remind you
Pagan Poetry - Bjork
On the surface simplicity
But the darkest pit in me
And it's pagan poetry
Pagan poetry
This time, I'm gonna keep it to myself
This time, I'm gonna keep me all to myself
But he makes me want to hand myself over
Mechanical Love - In This Moment
And I know you'll never understand me
No matter how hard we try
And I know I'll never understand you
And your mechanical love
I still hear you in my sleep
Your running through my veins
Your whispers, your machine
We knew it was meant to be
But never meant to last
I'm sorry, you always knew
Tender - Stuck In The Sound
Please believe that I won't
Won't give you a chance
To see me fall
Now I'm losing my head
You'll never see me
Never see me again
In love
Obsession
The Diary of Jane - Breaking Benjamin
Try to find out what makes you tick
'Cause I lie down sore and sick, do you like that? Do you like that?
There's a fine line between love and hate
And I don't mind, just let me say that I like that, I like that
Desperate, I will crawl
Waiting for so long
No love, there is no love
Die for anyone
What have I become?
Decode - Paramore
How can I decide what's right
When you're clouding up my mind?
I can't win your losing fight, all the time
Nor can I ever own what's mine
When you're always taking sides
But you won't take away my pride
No, not this time
You Know You Like It - DJ Snake & AlunaGeorge
You know you like it but it drives you insane
You know you like it but it drives you insane
You know you like it but you're scared of the shame
What you want? What you gonna do?
I'm So Sick - Flyleaf
Hear it! I'm screaming it!
You're heeding to it now
Hear it! I'm screaming it!
You tremble at this sound
You sink into my clothes
This invasion
Makes me feel
Worthless, hopeless, sick
Liar (Manic Depressive Mix by ASP) - Emilie Autumn
I want to hold you to the sun
I want to be your faithful one
I want to show you all the beauty you don't even know you hold
I'm hurting you for your own good
I'd die for you, you know I would
I'd give up all my wealth to buy you back the soul you never sold
I want to mix our blood and put it in the ground
So you can never leave
I want to win your trust, your faith, your heart
You'll never be deceived
Liar
Love Me Dead - Ludo
You're a faith-healer on T.V.
You're an office park without any trees
Corporate and cold
Gushing for gold
Leave me alone
You suck so passionately
You're a parasitic, psycho, filthy creature
Finger-bangin' my heart
You call me up drunk
Does the fun ever start?
The Horror of Our Love - Ludo
I'm a killer, cold and wrathful
Silent sleeper, I've been inside your bedroom
I've murdered half the town, left you love notes on their headstones
I'll fill the graveyards until I have you
Moonlight walking, I smell your softness
Carnivorous and lusting to track you down among the pines
I want you stuffed into my mouth
Hold you down and tear you open
Live inside you, love, I'd never hurt you
But I'll grind against your bones until our marrows mix
I will eat you slowly
Breezeblocks - Alt J
She may contain the urge to run away
But hold her down with soggy clothes and breezeblocks
Germolene, disinfect the scene, my love, my love, love, love
But please don't go, I love you so, my lovely
Please don’t go, I’ll eat you whole
I love you so, I love you so, I love you so
A Love Suicide - Yutaka Minobe
I will do you harm, I will break my arm
I'm a victim of your charms
I want to be dead
When I am, I'm in bed
I can be so mean, you can beat me
I would like to shame you
I would like to blame you
Just because of my love to you
And love itself is just as innocent as roses in May
I know nothing can drive it away
Though love itself is just as brief as a candle in the wind
And it's greedy just like sin
Run - Thien Baccarin
Run.
Death
Protect Me - Placebo
Maybe we're victims of fate, remember when we'd celebrate?
We'd drink and get high until late, and now we're all alone
Wedding bells ain't gonna chime with both of us guilty of crime
And both of us sentenced to time, and now we're all alone
Protect me from what I want, protect me from what I want
Protect me from what I want, protect me, protect me
Cage of Bones - Son Lux
Let's be anyone but you and me today
Trade this heavy cage of bones for flight
And when the sirens reach out for us
We'll be far away
Oh, what a noise we'll make
Drowning out our mistakes, we can't erase
This is the chance we take
We shout until our bones break, we can't replace
Are we now what we'll be?
Are we fixed or free?
Blue - A Perfect Circle
I didn't want to know, I just didn't want to know
Best to keep things in the shallow end
'Cause I never quite learned how to swim
I just didn't want to know
Close my eyes just to look at you
Taken by this seamless vision
I close my eyes, ignore the smoke
Call an optimist, she's turning blue
Such a lovely color for you
Call an optimist, she's turning blue
While I just sit and stare at you
Come As You Are - Yuna
Come as you are, as you were
As I want you to be
As a friend, as a friend
As an old enemy
Take your time, hurry up
Choice is yours, don't be late
Take a rest as a friend
As an old memoria, memoria
And I swear that I don't have a gun
No, I don't have a gun
Running Up That Hill - Placebo
You don't wanna hurt me
But see how deep the bullet lies
Unaware I'm tearin' you asunder
Oh, there is thunder in our hearts
Is there so much hate for the ones we love?
Oh, tell me, we both matter, don't we?
It's you and me
Won't be unhappy
And if I only could
I'd make a deal with God
And I'd get Him to swap our places
Be runnin' up that road, be runnin' up that hill, be runnin' up that building
With no problems
Lacrymosa - Evanescence
Out on your own
Cold and alone again
Can this be what you really wanted, baby?
Blame it on me
Set your guilt free
Nothing can hold you back now, love
Last Flowers - Radiohead
And if I'm gonna talk
I just wanna talk
Please don't interrupt
Just sit back and listen
'Cause I can't face the evening straight
You can offer me escape
Houses move and houses speak
If you take me there you'll get relief
It's too much, too bright, too powerful
Passive - A Perfect Circle
"Dead as dead can be"
My doctor tells me
But I just can't believe him
Ever the optimistic one
I'm sure of your ability
To become my perfect enemy
Wake up and face me
Don't play dead 'cause maybe
Someday, I will walk away and say
"You disappoint me"
Maybe you're better off this way
In The Lake - Emilie Autumn
In the lake
You will find me
Behind your house
Behind your house
And from that lake
I will remind you
Of your promises broken
Your cruel words spoken
My ocean is bluer than the heart you had to break
My sea is deeper than your lake
Vienna - The Fray
Maybe in five or ten yours and mine will meet again
Straighten this whole thing out
Maybe then honesty need not be feared as a friend or an enemy
This is the distance
And this is my game face
There's really no way to reach me
There's really no way to reach me
Is there really no way to reach me?
Am I already gone?

your post about your fear about losing the passion to write made me think of florence welch, of florence and the machine. her most recent album was made during the pandemic, and when discussing the album she talks about how before she always thought about how hard touring was, that it was so draining. and then the pandemic hit. many of the songs on this album are about how she realizes that she may never sing on stage again and how much it almost feels like a "you got what you wanted", and how much she regrets it and feels an immense sense of guilt. anyway, this is my way of saying that i think a lot of artists feel that fear, and that you're not alone.
Ohhhh, interesting, thank you, I did not know that!!
I think to a lot of artists, our creativity is this inexplicable part of us that we don't feel quite in control of, and as a result we're inevitably superstitious about it. Like, Idk where the stories come from, Idk how inspiration happens, so Idk what I'll do to find them if they leave. I'm sure people might say that they come from inside of us but it just doesn't feel that way.
I read this New Yorker article about this medieval nun who can be considered the "first" musical composer for a given definition of that term. What struck me was that this nun didn't seem especially religious, but she did seem to believe that the music she was composing must be coming from God. She was constantly portrayed in art as being visited by the Holy Spirit to give her the songs. And as I was reading it I was thinking, like, Of course. Of course that's how it feels. I totally get why this woman felt she had no explanation for her inspiration but to believe God must be real and must be divinely sending it to her, because it just feels like this completely unknowable thing -- and, in medieval times, the word given to unknowable things was "God."
So: You don't tempt the wrath of the whatever from high atop the thing.

My Tortured Poets Department Theoryyy
I haven't seen that much analysis of the letter she posted to preface the album... I think it's supposed to be significant. It reads like a riddle/spell/forewarning... I'm gonna deep-dive analyze it here, but basically I think the letter spells out what each side of the album is going to be about... now that she released the tracklist (thanks to the krayziefemale tiktok leak... which also deserves investigating), we know there are 4 sides. Based on the letter, my theory is that each side is going to tell present different parts of the whole story:
Side A - My Tarnished Coat of Arms
Fortnight ft. Post Malone
The Tortured Poets Department
My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys
Down Bad
Side B - My muses, talismans, and charms
So Long, London
But Daddy I Love Him
Fresh Out the Slammer
Florida!!! ft Florence and the Machine
Side C - The tick, tick, tick of love bombs
Guilty as Sin?
Who's Afraid of Little Old Me?
I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)
loml
Side D - My veins of pitch black ink
I Can Do It With a Broken Heart
The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived
The Alchemy
Clara Bow
Bonus Track - The Manuscript
I want to say too while this might be pure clownery in terms of the categorization, I think that there could be some truth to the letter signifying the major themes of this album's songs. I also saw a twitter thread on how this can be interpreted as a meta-commentary on her role as a celebrity and her songwriting, which makes a lot of sense! Writing songs about personal pain and love and etc. is a lot like entering pieces into evidence (into the court of public opinion), and she might be playing into how we all analyze everything to death that she releases!
Tumblr media
Ok deep dive on the letter so you can see how I came to my conclusion lets go.....
"And so I enter into evidence..."
Evidence is entered so that a jury/judge can make their decision, or in this case the court of public opinion
She believes that the following pieces of evidence, or songs, are vital to the album's narrative
Implies that there is "another side" opposing her argument
"My tarnished coat of arms..."
A coat of arms is a “heraldic bearing” or shield, used to “establish identity in battle”, could represent a person/country/etc.
Tarnished means “lose or cause to lose luster” or “make or become less valuable or respected”
Worn, dirtied, from war? Implies she defended herself or fought for something… and the worn coat of arms is the proof that she did
“Tarnished” here can also be interpreted metaphorically-- allegiances and loves that she once fought for/with, that have faded since
She has often defended her principles, experiences, truth in her music as if "in battle"
NOTE - This isn't her first time using war/battle imagery in recent years...
“So yeah it’s a war, it’s the goddamn fight of my life and you started it” from Ivy
“Fighting in only your army” from YLM, “Tore your banners down, took the battle underground” from The Great War
"I tried to pick my battles til the battle picked me" and "When I dropped my sword" from Long Story Short
"When did all our lessons start to look like weapons pointed at my deepest hurt?" from happiness
"My muses, acquired like bruises..."
Muse - "a person or personified force who is the source of inspiration for a creative artist"
She is submitting her "muses", creative inspirations... plural... as evidence-- why and who? Probably her loves and friends lost
She is clarifying that these muses were "acquired like bruises", which I interpreted as to say that no love of hers has come and gone without leaving their indelible and painful mark on her
NOTE - This isn't the first time using bruising as imagery in recent years...
"My knuckles were bruised like violets" from The Great War
"The mark you saw on my collarbone..." from Maroon
"Past the blood and bruise..." from happiness
"My talismans and charms..."
Talisman is a "an object, typically an inscribed ring or stone, that is thought to have magic powers and to bring good luck"
Her muses are her talismans and charms... the work they have inspired have become her lucky charms for her future and life's work
"The tick, tick, tick of love bombs..."
Love bombing is a manipulation tactic, "an attempt to influence a person by demonstrations of attention and affection
The repetition of "tick" evokes the sound bombs make before they are set off-- perhaps the signs of manipulation to come
I like to interpret this line more in the way that she in love-bombed by the public-- adored one day, and then loathed the next (think 2016 and reputation), this might all be part of the narrative that she is wanting to tell in TTPD
NOTE - Her use of bomb imagery and descriptions of manipulation in recent years...
"Uh huh, the bombs were closer..." in The Great War
"I greet you with a battle hero's welcome" in tolerate it, a song that can be interpreted about being manipulated to think because your partner is older/wiser they matter more and "know best", you rely on their approval for emotional validation
"My veins of pitch black ink"
Ink in veins is a phrase that is used to refer to a writer's "predisposition, interest in, and passion for the written word"
In this album she is presenting her passion for writing
Let me know any thoughts or corrections you might have!

🌻Neurodivergent Music Artist Here!!!🌻
Hi everyone! I'm Avalina. An alt pop music artist based in London. I release a new song every first day of the month and here's the song for this month (September). It's my favourite so far, really hits close to home with impact and makes the hairs rise on your arms with the good chills. It has that grand orchestral vibe inspired by film soundtracks and artists like Florence and the Machine, Hozier, Lana del Rey and Enya.
This song is very special to me because it's about the struggles of being a neurodivergent person in a world that really wasn't made for you. Having to mask, feeling confused and overstimulated, never knowing how you come across to others and always being scared you might have said 'the wrong thing'.
youtube
While at the same time being a logician and strategist, and excelling at things neurotypical people often find difficult. It's a complex and multilayered experience, with many different expressions. Want to get to know me better? follow the links bellow (I'm most active on tiktok) My socials @avalina0_o on tiktok @avalina.music on insta patreon.com/avalinamusic
Hope you enjoy, please follow me and go listen to it on your preferred streaming platform. Thanks for supporting a neurodivergent artist<3 Here are the lyrics
Splendour (by Avalina)
When you were born the world was such a kind and loving place you'd never need to know you face from every single angle
What will it be? you have to calculate the mask you need feeling the fear of every little thing out of my control
How does it seem so simple yet it's so hard for me You just want love and splendour beauty and youth forever braced in these rules together yet you are unaware
When your bright eyes perceive me I'll never know the meaning you see in my whole being splendour is all I hope
Over and over scripts are played out over and over eyes are holdouts
It is a dance but no one ever taught me all the steps give me chance you speak in code and I act like I know it
Hearing what people would say even when you're alone
Chorus repeat
Over and over your heart beats over and over be discreet
Speak with your voice even if it wavers slightly you have the right to be who you are in peace
Chorus repeat x2

1 3 7 8 for that fic meme
1. What fic of yours would you recommend to someone who had never read any of your work? (In other words, what do you think is the best introduction to your fics?)
Oh man, this really depends on what fandom you are in, but if we are talking about wrestling I am going to be feral and say "threat level: euclid" because plotty, genre-bending stuff is honestly a really good introduction to all my works as a whole. If we are talking non-wrestling, then "saints & matyrs" for the same reasons. I am not, and never have been, a smut or fluff writer; you might get little pieces, but it's not what you will get overall from me, so those are good indicators of my works as a larger group. I don't want people to read one smut fic and think they will find a ton more, or read something fluffy and then get sideswipped by all the angst I write haha.
3. What are some tropes or details that you think are very characteristic of your fics?
Pining. And getting together. I am nooooooot very interested in pairings after the initial chase is done, so it's the getting together that I read and write primarily. That's the thrill for me. (Unless I have plotty things happening.)
7. Any worldbuilding you’re particularly proud of?
Definitely "saints & martyrs". I think I became an expert in psychics on that one trying to figure out how the time travel would work. I spent a LOT of time combining trigger and cross to get that fic to work like it did, and I am VERY proud of how it turned out.
8. What song would make a great fic (to either write or read)?
Big fan of Florence + the Machine's "Raise It Up", and I think it could inspire some awesome fics.

36 - Kate Bush - Hounds of Love
Tumblr media
I guess we're running up that hill today.
So I stopped watching Stranger Things in season 2 (my wife really hated when Dart are the cat and i felt no real compulsion to continue), so i totally missed why this song got really big out of nowhere last year.
Never really got into Kate Bush. Let's see what I've been missing.
Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)-
Okay i never knew that was the full title of the song, that rules. Also didn't think it was gonna kick the album off. ALSO didn't know it had over A BILLION PLAYS.
And since I'm sure the audio players don't/can't track each other's metrics, that's just on Spotify! Holy shit.
Love that synth string in the intro.
Her voice is so cool, and the things she's doing with the layering are amazing.
Okay, wait, is she implying that he is the one running up that hill? And that she wants to make a deal to be running up the hill instead?
Because let me tell you, I've run up some hills, and it's not as nice as she makes it sound.
Hounds of Love-
I like the inversion of the Hounds of War.
Feels like the other side of Florence + The Machine's "Howl", being hunted by the idea of love rather than being the one hunting for it.
I would be incomprehensibly surprised if Kate Bush wasn't a source of inspiration for Florence.
(Been listening to Gecs lately while driving, and at that last line, all i can think is "i might go and throw my shoes into the lake, yeah".)
The Big Sky-
I like this one, mostly because I'm always pointing out clouds that look like things.
(The other day, there was a cloud above my house that looked like two kidney beans doing it doggy-style.)
If this isn't the unofficial song of Montana, that state just isn't trying. (It's the "Big Sky state" iirc.)
Okay, the end of this one gets a little repetitive. Feels a little unnecessarily long.
Mother Stands For Comfort-
A love song from the point of view of Jason Voorhees (...or maybe Ed Gein?)
Dark and jagged and erratic and atmospheric, i really like the instrumentation throughout, it's kinda like if Richard D. James wrote an art-pop song.
I stand by my initial assessment. A beautiful serial killer song.
Cloudbusting-
"I still dream of Orgonon" Wait, the orgonne energy research laboratory?
Google check confirms.
Yeah, this is a song about cumming. Squirting, possibly? "you're making rain and you're just in reach".
Immediately wondering if this is the inspiration for the Bob's Burgers song "Oil Spill".
(Yeah it's... Not subtle.)
Oh, wait, no, i think it's actually about water breaking and childbirth. I think i prefer the incredibly powerful orgasm reading instead.
And Dream Of Sheep -
This could be on a "go to sleep" playlist. Very mellow.
I totally feel the light sleeper part, though. Never been good at sleeping, and the army made that way worse.
Under Ice-
I grew up near a river junction in Illinois. One of the first things you learn is "NEVER trust river ice".
And, not to be too blunt, but if you don't learn that from hearing it, you likely won't need to worry about learning much else.
Honestly, this one is a bit of a recurring nightmare, the idea of being trapped under ice is horrifying.
Waking The Witch-
Considering how the last song flows into this one, maybe it IS a nightmare.
Possibly just the sound of Catholic guilt?
This is a wild one. Lots of what feels like found footage audio.
Watching You Without Me-
Ocarina of Time's Goron City? That you?
Considering the sweep of the past few songs on the album, I'm guessing she didn't make it out from under the ice, it has the vibe of "ghost watching the living".
Oh, she straight up says that.
Oh damn! Inverse backmasking?
Record the melody backwards, while singing the words backwards, so it's still intelligible when played forward. I LOVE IT.
And the chopped up cries to be heard? Oh, this song rules. The vibe here is immaculate.
Kate, this one made me a convert. Masterfully executed auditory ghost story.
Jig Of Life-
The dead woman fights for her right to live? I'm hoping I'm reading this album right, because all of a sudden I'm thinking: "is this ALL one big story? Did i just get ’Hazards of Love'-ed here? What are the implications of that realization with the very clearly about a serial killer song in the middle there?"
Hello Earth-
A song for Doctor Manhattan? Idk. Also, not sure about this one within the "is it all connected?" framework.
Maybe the woman lost the fight for her life?
The return of "getting out of the water".
The German at the end translates to:
"deeper deeper
somewhere deep
is there a light".
The Morning Fog-
I guaran-goddamn-tee that someone somewhere had almost fallen asleep during last song only to get jump-scared to shit by the start of this one.
There's a certain amount of "through the underworld" to it.
Like being in a bad trip for a while and everything dissipates as the night fades away, and you just stand there in the growing light of the morning sun and finally feel refreshed and alive again.
You could tell me that this album was based on a Greek tragedy and i would believe you.
You could also tell me that this album was based on a really challenging acid trip and i would also believe you.
Either way, atmospheric as hell, beautiful and tragic and emotional. I really enjoyed this one.
Favorite Track: Watching You Without Me. I get why Running Up That Hill was the big single and this wasn't (it just couldn't be, it needs the buildup), but this one is the best track on the album.
Least Favorite Track: The Big Sky is slightly diminished in my eyes by that ending just going on forever, but this is a really good album overall.

i arrive, brother, for this pathetic sacrifice so that i might give you a final gift and speak to your silent ashes in vain -- Catullus 101 (my translation)
In moments like that, he thought she might hate him.
What kind of story would the griots tell of you? You are no story. A man of use to no one. A man no one depends on, no one trusts. You drift like spirits and evils and even their drift is with purpose.
Is that all people are? Their purpose? Their use?
You have no purpose. You are a man loved by no one. Who will grieve you? [...] What kind of hero are you? -- Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James
Only Kaz stood apart, staring silently out the window to the dark streets below. “Kaz,” said Nina. “You may not be glad we’re alive, but we’re glad you’re alive. Come here!”
You wanted to rescue them, all of them. But it was not possible. For everyone seen, there were a thousand more. All those blows, those tears. And God in his jewel-encrusted heaven, looking down, missing not even the fall of the sparrow. Smiling at its pain? -- Faces Under Water by Tanith Lee
“Are you mad?” “I’d probably be happier if I was,” said Kaz.

inspired to write for the first time in a few months (finished up grad school + took my boards exam, have been recovering/napping ever since) and Jesus f*king christ, it might just be the darkest thing I've ever come up with.
I say "dark" because the best way I can describe it is Handmaid's Tale meets the Red Room/Winter Soldier project with a splash of eugenics.
Tumblr media
Backpedaling - I was initially inspired by Florence Pugh's performance in Oppenheimer (10/10 would recommend BTW, phenomenal movie) and the florence + the machine song "the bomb," and then what was intended to be a one-and-done Bucklena angst piece set during the Thunderbolts went off in a completely different direction.

I recently discovered the Florence + the Machine song ‘Grace’ (I know, I know, I’m a bit late to the party). The song is a heartbreaking apology where the narrator says ‘I'm sorry I ruined your birthday you had turned 18 / And the sunshine hit me and I was behaving strangely’.
The repetition of the name Grace along with the affirmations such as 'You are so loved', not to mention that the outro is a repetition of 'This is the only thing I've ever had any faith in' tells us that the narrator wants to make amends and they know that Grace is the better person.
Another interesting example of an apology is the song 'Back to December' by Taylor Swift. In this song, the narrator desires to go back to the moment where they broke up to change her own mind.
'Sorry' by Halsey is more or less a list of the narrator's bad behaviours such as 'I can sometimes treat the people / That I love like jewelry' and 'Sorry that I can't believe / That anybody ever really / Starts to fall in love with me'. However, similar to 'Grace', the bridge of the song and the outro are repetitions of 'Someone will love you', suggesting that the other person deserves more than what the narrator can offer.
So the prompt is to write an apology. However, it doesn't have to be as intense as the above examples. I think there's an invitation to be a bit funny. Consider apologising to the wall you bumped into or the coffee your didn't drink before it went cold.
Word bank. This isn't essential, it's just a list of random words that might spark a bit of inspiration in your writing. Wind Truth Advertise Triangle Exotic
Happy writing!
Don't forget to tag me in what you've writting!

Top insp songs for characters? I know you did a 100-song playlist once but I was wondering if you had to narrow to just one song per character, and if any of those had changed over the years :)
Yeah, here are some of my faves :) Some might be familiar if you've been around my blog for long enough, others might be new. "Long post" tag is on this as usual if you need to block that.
This doesn't really match a specific character, but I like the song "Dirty Paws" for FOP 'fics, especially in regards to the war between Fairies and Anti-Fairies from the "Balance of Flour" episode. The song opens with a war between bees and birds because "the sky wasn't big enough for them all." Then it says the birds turned to get help from the wolves, and the wolf queen charges in with her forces and takes down "The queen bee and her men."
I love because it mirrors the way I portray the war in my 'fics, right down to the way that the Pixies get dragged into it despite trying to remain neutral, and I just really like that soft "And that's how the story goes" at the end of the song, as if no outsiders can really understand what truly happened. Not only that, but it even specifies "The story of that beast with those four dirty paws" when the song earlier claimed it was a story "about the birds and the bees." I like the implication that people remember history in different ways and I just think it's a nice inspiration song for the war chapters of my backstory 'fics.
Cosmo - "Bird Song" - Florence + The Machine - /shrug. To me this is a big Cosmo and Juandissimo song. My take on Cosmo's backstory involves a lot of secrets, and I like playing with those deleted lines of dialogue from "Fairy Fairy Quite Contrary" where Juandissimo tells Remy that he only fears one fairy and it's Cosmo. He also specifically describes Cosmo as "Wanda's warrior husband" and "as a cunning and calculating foe." I wish they would have kept that dialogue, because it's freaking hilarious to imagine Juandissimo cowering in Cosmo's presence skldjf.
FOP lore hints that Cosmo is extremely powerful, but only when he snaps (such as in "Wishology" when he turns himself into Cos-zilla and summons one million wands). However, Fairy World mostly regards him as a bumbling idiot, implying they're not afraid of him as long as nothing sets him off. I like to imagine Juandissimo has seen Cosmo's dark side... and he didn't like it.
In several episodes, Wanda openly flirts with Juandissimo or fawns over him (Wanda poofing Juandissimo into the room so he would swoon over her while she cooked bacon, Wanda blatantly telling Cosmo that she was having a lovely dream about her ex and chocolate), but Cosmo doesn't seem too threatened. He even flat-out says he'd tell Juandissimo to leave Wanda alone and the only reason he doesn't is because he likes eating the gifts he sends her kljsdf. Cosmo also harasses Juandissimo regularly, once even locking him in the freezer, and Juandissimo doesn't seem to want to mess with him. "Bird Song" fits this vibe of "Cosmo has a dark side and no one really takes him seriously except Juandissimo, who witnessed it and has been terrified ever since." Love that.
Wanda - "Mine" - Taylor Swift. It's the quintessential Cosmo and Wanda song for me, right down to "You were in college working part-time waiting tables... left a small town, never looked back!" It's even got a few bumps in the road like "And I remember that fight, 2:30 AM... I ran out crying..." C'mon, this song was made for them.
Poof - "Popular" - Wicked. It's really hard to pick just one for Poof. If I were to pick one single song to describe him as a character, I'd say "Puff the Magic Dragon" because it's about an imaginary dragon whose child grows up and doesn't need him anymore, and that's big Poof vibes.
But for an inspiration song that feels right for my take on him, I'd absolutely throw in "Popular" from Wicked. Every time I hear it, I imagine him singing it to Foop and listing off H.P. and Jorgen as "Celebrated heads of state or especially great communicators! Did they have brains or knowledge? Don't make me laugh! They were popular!" while Foop stares into the void listening to this random suburban kid mansplain popularity to a prince, sldkjf.
One of my big inspiration songs for Poof is "Showdown" from the Big Fish musical, but that's incredibly specific to my plot arcs so I was hesitant to list it as a main insp song. Specifically, about 1:35 into the song where the son is challenging his father about the secrets of his past... while the chorus starts singing "You get a trial!" I imagine Cosmo just turning around with slowly dawning horror as the room around him transforms into the Fairy Court room and Poof stands coldly across from him, demanding answers.
All the dialogue that follows, like "You can't undo the things that you'd prefer be undone... You can never change the past, though it may haunt every breath" and "Really, son, I don't know what you think you're trying to prove" works REALLY well for my Cosmo portrayal. We'll get to see more hints of that in 'fics pretty soon, ha ha oh no.
I like to imagine Jorgen filling the role of judge in this song, particularly with Cosmo staring up at him and whispering "Oh, come on, doc... Aww, how long have you and me been friends?" Yeah that's major Cosmo and Jorgen vibes right there.
Sanderson [+ Poof] - The Company Way - How to Succeed In Business Without Really Trying - This always gives me major Poof and Sanderson vibes (during the story arc where Poof gets a job at Pixies Inc.)
"But what is your point of view?" "I have no point of view."
"Supposing the company thinks-" "I think so too."
"Uh, what would you say if-?" "I wouldn't say."
slkdjf that's totally Poof and Sandy this arc. One of my other Sanderson favorites is "Loser of the Year" (Simple Plan) which is about a rich guy singing about how there's no point in spending money if you're lonely, which fits my Sanderson portrayal well.
Goldie - "Ex's and Oh's" - Elle King - Ugh, there are so many good ones. I enjoy Goldie drama, nothing more lovely than a poor girl with harm OCD beating herself up over how she might hurt the people she loves but also trying to balance that with the fact that she deserves to be happy and also balancing that with political expectations as the will o' the wisp ambassador :'D
I picked "Ex's and Oh's" because it's hard to get something more fitting for teen Goldie than "Now there's one in California who's been cursing my name 'cuz I found me a better lover in the UK" when she's see-sawing between her attraction for Poof and Foop, wheeze... Oh, Dimmsdale canonically being located in California is cruel. Another of my Goldie favorites is “Good Girls” (5 Seconds of Summer).
Chloe - “A Guy That I’d Kinda Be Into” - Be More Chill. This one's just for me... it captures the vibe I envision for her life very well. Chloe does NOT get along with Kevin in show canon, from screaming at him in his debut to outright wishing to take his hall monitor position in "Chloe Rules," but this... this is a middle school / high school Crockermichael ship song when she's starting to come around.
Kevin, even though he's dead inside, is a sweetheart who likes to invent stuff and they have a lot in common, like their tense relationships with their parents and the way that the rest of the town judges them based on who their uncles are [Crocker for Kevin and Dinkleberg for Chloe in my 'verse]. Love that for her.
"Reflection" from Disney's Mulan is also a good one for introspective vibes, though canon Chloe does struggle to calm down enough for that to suit her perfectly, methinks.
Anti-Cosmo - “Anything For You” - Ludo. I could pick several good ones out for A.C. but this is definitely a fave. It fits my 'fic Frayed Knots very well, especially with stuff like "I have crossed a natural plane and communed with the dead" which fits a lot of the nature spirit vibes we'll see later, or "I've picked up rocks from distant moons" which clicks with the Doombringer subplot. I even started an animatic storyboard for this song a few years ago, I know I have those sketches somewhere and I should post them.
I also really like the lines "I've gotten drunk and shot the breeze with kings of far-off lands, they showed me wealth as far as I could see [...] and they cried with jealousy when I leaned in and told them about you." I feel like that captures the relationship between Anti-Cosmo and H.P. REALLY well. H.P. will always toss A.C. a soda and show off Pixie World, but once A.C. gets his happy marriage with Anti-Wanda, that's a heavy blow to the pixie. Their friendship survives it but boy does it sting him.
After "Anything For You," I think I'd have to go for some of my favorite Vocaloids like "I'm Glad That You're Evil Too" and "Bad Apple." Those are big A.C. vibes too.
Also "Rasputin" (Boney M.) and Poisoning Pigeons in the Park" (Tom Lehrer). Those are excellent too.
Anti-Wanda - “Floorfiller” - The A-Teens - This is a peppy party song but it's always had a weird, chilling vibe for me, especially with lines like, "Something's out of order, people in the corners" and "See, the name of the game is to play crowd pleaser!" It just always makes me think of Anti-Wanda, who's my gal who loves to dance and party, who goes out of her way to please crowds, but she'll also mess you up.
This is also the song I used when uploading the 'fic announcement for Part 3 of "This Is Halloween," where Anti-Wanda confronted the Darkness with nothing more than a golden sponge. That was fun.
Foop - "World's Smallest Violin" - AJR - This is one of my favorite Foop songs right now...
"I can't even finish school! Missed my mom and left too soon."
"I think I bored my therapist while playing him my violin."
"I know I'm not there mentally, but you could be the remedy"
"So if I do not find somebody soon, I'll blow up into smithereens... just let me play my violin for you!"
It's a good one for Foop :)
Anti-Marigold - “Does He Love You?” - Rilo Kiley - Yeah, picking one out for Anti-Marigold (Goldie's counterpart) isn't even a question for me. I hate to say it but "Does He Love You?" fits her to a T... It's got perfect lines like "A married man, he visits me" and "I guess it all worked out" and "Your husband will never leave you for me."
I adore the Anti-Marigold arc. It doesn't really hit until the end of the 130 Prompts but... :'D Oooh boy. Storm's coming.
Kevin Crocker - "Aliens Exist" - Blink-182 - This one could also work for Denzel because it's a Crocker song in general, but I love it for Kevin specifically.
Denzel Crocker- "Almost" (Bowling For Soup) - This one always makes me think of Crocker on the decline throughout his teens and young adulthood, just having a hard time and struggling with his life.
H.P. - “Chomp and Munch” - The Brave Little Toaster: Great Animal Rescue - I have a lot of H.P. songs and it's hard to only talk about one, but "Chomp and Munch" is an eternal favorite. It's all about once being in your prime but then slowly falling apart and it's so good. This was also my all-time favorite movie as a kid and I watched it a million times, plus I still can't get through Radio's sacrifice scene without crying, so I love this movie and I love that I get an H.P. song <3
"Chomp and munch, chew and crunch, there's a lot here to destroy! Inch by inch, it's a cinch, bringing down this big old boy..."
Another H.P. favorite is "Grow Up" by Simple Plan because it's about a loud, bratty kid who just wants to live his life and have fun, and if this comes as a shock to you since H.P. belongs to an anti-fun species, you need to look again at his character /lh
"Hanging out with all my friends and never being at home! I'm impolite and I make fun of everyone! I'm immature, but I will stay this way forever. Until the day I die, I promise I won't change!"
Gary - “Egoselfish” - (Vocaloid; Miku-tan's cover is the one I'm familiar with) - Ugh I could roll around flopping on the floor infodumping about Gary forever, I love his crumbling heart. "Egoselfish" will eternally be my go-to Gary song and if you've been following me for long enough then you may have seen me sketch him to it a couple times.
The line "I'm doing this all for you!" followed by the more snarky, question mark'd response "'I'm doing this all for me?' Dare say that about our love, and mister, I'll have to do away with you..." hits so hard. That's major Gary vibes. He builds this very twisted idea in his head that he needs to "save" Betty after the Pixies wipe her memories in the 130 Prompt "Solo", and every time he shows up after that he's layering guilt on himself as a way to cover up the fact that he feels like Betty betrayed him... He wants to "save her" and make things "the way they used to be" and he'll do anything for her.
"Love is what so captivates us, yet this 'love' at time leads to 'loathing...'" / "In the end we're still just fine to keep on smiling all the time!" / "I'm doing this all for me.... Well, doing it both for us... I'm going to hide my face and cry my eyes out..." It's so Gary. So good.
I have a lot of good Gary songs, including "Shut Up and Dance" (Walk the Moon), "Sad Song" (We the Kings") and "Light 'Em Up" (Fall Out Boy). He's just this big, emotionally charged character and he feels things very deeply, he's very fun to play with. But "Egoselfish" will always be #1 Gary song in my heart.
Betty - “He Likes Boys” - Simone Battle - There are other good Betty songs I like for insp, like "Human" (Christina Perri), but "He Likes Boys" is probably my top Betty Mindset song. In canon she makes a point of telling Gary she "doesn't like him like that" and his response is "But I need to be held" and I like to think that Betty liked him for a long time and enjoyed hugs, but then started drawing lines because he wasn't reciprocating her feelings and it started hurting her. She finds herself unable to show him the same closeness that she used to, but she still loves and respects him as a good friend.
"Human" fits present-day 130 Prompts Betty better, but "He Likes Boys" fits the younger Betty in Pink and Gray a lot because she grows up with this innocent little belief that Gary will be Her Forever Partner, but she never actually communicates this to him and so he thinks their relationship is just professional. It's awkward for both of them, but Betty keeps trying to tamp down her feelings and express her love and friendship to him. And that works great! ... until she starts dating Pete and getting ready to move in with him, and then they have to decide to cut ties... yikes.
/whispers loudly Gary is actually aro/ace as all heck but he doesn't know what that means because it's the 90s / early 2000s and also I don't know a song about that. (If you were ever curious, some people think he's dating Talon because Talon has a human disguise and hangs out with Gary, they work on bikes together. Anti-Cosmo thinks Gary's dating Vicky- long story and we'll get to that later. I love Club "Redheads Who Didn't Get Mind-Wiped.")
Anyway those are some I wanted to share today, thanks for asking!

Heya! Because i am awestruck by your outworldish writing so much, i really wanna know some secrets if you dont mind 👀
What inspires you to go and write out a fic? Like specifically, also these q's meant for jwds only. And how do you build the structure, think of the environment, and research?
Sorry if q's seem too vague
AHHHH! Hey!!
Thank you for your message- it's so nice to talk to you
Secrets, you say?? Hmm, I can share some secrets 👀
Tumblr media
What inspires you to go and write out a fic?
When a piece of media consumes me (in the way Beyond Evil has), my mind becomes inundated with possibilities. I'm naturally an overthinker in all areas of my life, and that extends to things I am passionate about. I feel this visceral need to explore the text provided, but also, the subtext. So, the media itself is a massive inspo. I am not the kind of person that can just write whenever I want. For me, writing is an arduous and tiring endeavour that takes me a long time to get through. I cannot write unless I have the bug for it- which makes finishing projects very... interesting. (I'm terrible at finishing books, I'm terrible at finishing fics... it's a problem) I do not tend to plan fics in advance. There are only 3 that I can say were minorly "planned" (Indoctrination, By Desire, and one that isn't written/published yet). But that's because they're all interconnected. Most of the time, the words just present themselves and I have to type them down otherwise I'll forget them forever.
I'll give an example of a few recent inspirations:
Blessed Hands was inspired by some real-life sad shit that I guess my mind needed to process
Your Love's Whore was written because a few weeks ago, there was a scorchingly hot day and I wanted to imagine what a jwds hot girl summer might look like
An unwritten fic I thought of last night was inspired by a scene from One Spring Night (I have an outline and gave it the creative title of "hallway". But I have no intention of actually writing it thus far)
Indoctrination was directly inspired by a cafedecanela post that I can't find nor have the time rn to find (but I will look later and link it)
Another huge inspiration/aid is music!!! I'm like everyone else and absolutely live for music. So, I use it to help direct what I want from a story (the emotions, atmosphere, the "vibe"). A few examples are:
Indoctrination was written whilst I listened to sappy, sad Korean rock on repeat for about 3 weeks straight
Your Love's Whore was heavily inspired by five songs in particular: . Posing in Bondage - Japanese Breakfast . Bedroom Hymns - Florence and the Machine . New Ways - Daughter . Your Clothes - Can't Swim . Your Love's Whore - Wolf Alice . and I listened to the album Brasilian Skies - Masayoshi Takanaka on repeat whilst actually writing as I struggled to write if I can hear English words, my brain gets distracted (I hope that makes sense)
I have a whole long-ass jwds playlist on Spotify (which I made as soon as I finished watching the show back in Feb). I love it so very much because there are some absolute bangers in there that are 100% jwds.
Tumblr media
And I'm going to keep adding to it until I grow tired.
And how do you build the structure, think of the environment, and research?
Ooookay, now I'm actually going to have to give this a think. The wonderful thing about fanfiction is that a lot of the worldbuilding and aesthetic has been done for you. (Thank you to the cast and crew of Beyond Evil). So, it's quite easy to impose your own impression onto a piece and explore what's already been established. For the fics I have released, I did do research in the sense that I didn't start my fics first. By that, I mean, when I finished watching BE for the first time, I started writing an essay (which required a lot of research, rewatching the show, dissecting scenes, researching film theory, using my useless art degree lol) exploring the show's queer coding. I wrote about 15K words (mostly were just ramblings) until I realised that I needed to explore these characters in a more artistic way. This really stems from the fact that I feel so connected to Joo Won; he and I share a few unhealthy coping mechanisms... (it's the yikes times). I've always liked Joo Won; I didn't have to adjust to him, I always saw his pov and understood where he was going from. I just felt like I got him (which doesn't mean to say, I didn't also openly laugh at him), so I think I wanted to write to work through some identity stuff I have going on. I've trying to learn Hangul in my spare time, I love Korean cuisines so I've been naturally researching that in my personal life, I also love me some snooping- so I use google maps a lot to just look at South Korea (and anywhere in the world really) and gain an impression of what different areas are like. I look up historical events, I research pop culture, etc... and I basically just try to dive in and ingest as much information as I can to make the characters and their world feel as real as possible. When it comes to writing Joo Won, I also use my own experiences (as an English person) to influence his use of language and mindset. When I first wrote Indoctrination, my partner read some of it and told me to change some of my language choices because I used English slang that isn't very universal. I listened to some of the suggestions but not all because Joo Won would totally call people a "pasty dipshit wanker"; or use words like "chuffed", "gutted", "plastered", "dodgy" (and so on) and use the c-word like it's going out of style (as does almost every English person his age).
In terms of structure, I don't write chronologically. I just write whatever comes to mind and then piece it together and edit like crazy. However, I DO LOVE MAKING NOTES AND WRITING OVERLY DETAILED OUTLINES. So... I guess it depends on the story. My three surprise/procrastination fics that I didn't plan at all (Drone Bomb Me, take my name, and your blessed hands) are some of my favourites. (I wrote DBM in a day- which I don't think I have ever done before lol) We can contrast that against a fic I can't even begin to write because the words refuse to come to me, is living as an 8,000+ word outline.
So..... There's not a lot of method to my madness, just spiteful determination.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(oooooooohhh some cheeky screenshots... now we're getting personal)
Yeah... I'm not sure what else to say. It's all just luck and stress to be honest with you. I haven't written fanfiction in years(!!!). Previously, I was writing an original piece that is currently taking a nap.
I think I have mentioned this to you previously but I'm so very grateful for your kind support and words of encouragement. They mean so, so much to me. I am just a wee insecure baby that is the poster child of dyslexia. I know very little about the proper use (grammar, etc) of my mother tongue because of an unconventional schooling experience, soooo to have you say such lovely things about my work, is just *chef's kiss and tears* perfection. Thank you thank you thank you thank you I hope this answers your questions. I'm not sure I have haha!!
(also, please, get some sleep and make you're eating your favourite foods)
Bye for now!

LIST 5 SONGS THAT INSPIRE YOU TO WRITE YOUR MUSE.
never let me go - florence and the machine //  looking up from underneath, fractured moonlight on the sea. reflections still look the same to me, as before i went under. and it’s peaceful in the deep, cathedral where you can not breathe, no need to pray, no need to speak, now i am under.
i’ll be good - jaymes young //  My past has tasted bitter for years now. So I wield an iron fist, grace is just weakness, or so i’ve been told. I’ve been cold, I’ve been merciless. But the blood on my hands scares me to death, maybe I’m waking up. I’ll be good, I’ll be good. And I’ll love the world like I should. I’ll be good, I’ll be good. For all of the light that I shut out, for all of the innocent things that I doubt. For all of the bruises I’ve caused and the tears, for all of the things that i’ve done all these years.
control - halsey  // I sat alone in bed ‘til the morning, I’m crying they’re coming for me. And I tried to hold these secrets inside me, my mind’s like a deadly disease - I paced around for hours on empty, I jumped at the slightest of sounds. And I couldn’t stand the person inside me, I turned all the mirrors around.
doesn’t remind me - audioslave  // I walk the streets of Japan until I get lost, cause it doesn’t remind me of anything. With a graveyard tan and carrying a cross, yeah it doesn’t remind me of anything. I like studying faces in the parking lot, because it doesn’t remind me of anything. I like driving backwards in the fog, because it doesn’t remind me of anything. The things that I’ve loved, the things that i’ve lost. The things I held sacred that I dropped. I wont lie no more you can bet. I don’t want to learn what I need to forget.
the sound of silence - pentatonix  //  In restless dreams i walked alone, narrow streets of cobblestone. Beneath the halo of a streetlamp, I turned my collar to the cold and damp. when my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light that split the night. And touched the sound of silence.
& LIST 5 QUOTES THAT INSPIRE YOU TO WRITE YOUR MUSE.

Florence + the Machine - Lungs: Album Review
In honour of Dance Fever's release this month and inspired by my bestie's review of ELO's first album, I've decided to start a little album review series of my own, but for Florence + the Machine!
Now of course I'm starting with Lungs. The real question is, WHICH version of Lungs? There's like four. After some consideration, I've decided to go with the Deluxe version, but I'll also be reviewing the demos released on the 10th Anniversary edition and also Heavy In Your Arms.
So with that cleared up, away we go!
Tumblr media
#1: Dog Days Are Over
There’s no doubt this is an iconic opening, doubling as most people’s introduction to Florence + the Machine as a band: the twinkling harp, the light, cheery melody before Florence’s vocals soar in the chorus… and then you read the lyrics and see happiness hit her like a bullet in the back. Classic!
But as every signature song goes, I’m on the side that finds this immensely overplayed. 5/10.
#2: Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)
Florence wrote this after her label requested she write something upbeat in contrast to all the dark songs she already had, and by doing so she felt like she was sacrificing something— hence the lamb and the knife. Lyrical dissonance comes back into full swing and Florence makes sure to swing with a bat.
The production on this track is insane with how they make Florence sound like she’s a whole choir by herself, and the result is a song that could be a cult anthem and yet something you could probably get away with playing at a children’s birthday party or dance recital. Fuck yeah Flo!! 7/10.
#3: I’m Not Calling You A Liar
My feelings on this one always swing. Some days I really appreciate the lyrics and mellow, watered-down quality of this as compared to the majority of the album, and some days I just skip it on sight because I find it cloying. 4.5/10.
#4: Howl
The BEST lycanthropy love song there is. This song’s pacing is so tight, the lyrics are so beautifully feral, and only Florence could make the wordy bit in the second chorus so desperate and perfectly damning. Bonus for this being my own introduction to Florence + the Machine. 9.5/10.
#5: Kiss With A Fist
Contrary to popular belief, this isn’t a song about domestic violence. It’s punky and comedically whiny with the mutual abuse between the lovers sounding like slapstick. This is also probably the one song off this album that I feel is properly “catchy”. I used to not think too much about this song, but that grungy rock riff and Florence + the Machine sounding like they’re just shredding it out has since grown on me. 6/10.
#6: Girl With One Eye
This is actually a Ludes cover— and, yeah, it’s about murdering a girlfriend. From the perspective of the murderer. :/
But it’s a good song. Florence’s vocals start out with this soft, simmering rage that later soars into explosions, and the ominous drums and guitar that accompany her blend perfectly to create this angry song with knifepoint precision. However, I’m more fond of the Bayou Percussion Version. More on that later. 7.5/10.
#7: Drumming Song
The beginning of Florence’s water + religion obsession. THIS is their whole aesthetic. This is the I Am Damned But I Love You song. This is the Lie Facedown In The River song. The devotee x ceremonial drummer song. Needless to say, the percussion and piano and vocals on this is absolutely stunning, enveloping you in the tidal WAVE of sound. 10/10.
#8: Between Two Lungs
Even though it's the closest thing this album has to a title track, this definitely feels like a breather after the epic that is Drumming Song more than its own thing. It’s very peaceful to listen to though, with Florence’s vocals gradually soaring alongside the lighthearted melody (despite what the lyrics might say lol). This is somehow more neatly packaged than the rest of this album, but I like it overall. 6.5/10.
#9: Cosmic Love
Gonna get a little controversial here: the lyrics and the drums are the best things about this song, with the latter being the only thing that does it for me. I find the instrumentals and melody cool, but for the most part it sounds empty to me, with Florence having no real opportunity to showcase her real vocal strength throughout the track. 4/10.
EDIT 26/04/2023: I can only come to the conclusion that I was having a major cold or something at the time of writing this because of the PURE LACK OF TASTE. Cosmic Love throws me into orbit. The lyrics are love and melancholia incarnate. Florence sings her goddamn heart out. It's so quintessentially Florence + the Machine with the harp and twinkling melodies about dark subject matter. THIS is the song that deserves Dog Days Are Over's popularity and that is the hill I am willing to die on. 10/10.
#10: My Boy Builds Coffins
The lyrics of this read like a fairy tale! Instant yes! The minimal backing instrumentals enhance the storytelling aspect of this so well. I just love this one. 8.5/10.
#11: Hurricane Drunk
Florence’s vocals on this hit me like a TRUCK. The harp itself sounds like it’s spiralling. There’s hopelessness, bravado, vulnerability, and even a bit of happiness in self-destruction. This is the true hidden gem on the album. 9/10.
#12: Blinding
My personal favourite. This unapologetically creepy song has EVERYTHING: sinister harp, bone-shaking drums, being in love with otherworldly beings, bodies in the garden, succumbing to feral insanity and Snow White stitching up the circuit boards. This song could resurrect the dead. I feel it. 10/10.
#13: You’ve Got The Love
Oof. I know this is one of Florence’s favourite covers and songs of all time… but I don’t get the hype. It just sounds so generic. Sorry Flo. 2/10.
#14: Bird Song Intro
Pretty! 6/10.
#15: Bird Song
This surprised me so much. This and its intro sound nothing alike, neither does the intro actually sound like it leads into this song. But that aside, I love how the lyrics for this also read like a fairy tale/dark folk tale. It’s made even better coupled with the frenetic melody, Florence’s pouty I-Did-What-I-Had-To-Do vocals and the mood of what her character does to said bird. 6.5/10.
#16: Dog Days Are Over - Demo
This feels like it has more positive energy and tambourine lol. 5.5/10.
#17: Falling
I used to just pass over this song until I finished series 2 of BBC Sherlock. Shh. It’s a pretty solid effort; classified under I Am Damned But I Love You and undoubtedly one of the more subdued songs off the album. Perhaps even the most subdued. I’d say I like it, but it's far from my favourite for this album. 4.5/10.
#18: Hardest Of Hearts
This song didn’t make it onto the album after it was recorded, and I can see why. It’s very different in terms of sound from the rest of the album, and not in a good way. The whole track just sounds uninspired, from Florence's low vocals to the downtrod lyrics. 1.5/10.
#19: Ghosts - Demo
This is a demo of I’m Not Calling You A Liar lmao. Florence lets go on the vocals and sounds rawer but more incomprehensible. And that’s about it. 2.5/10.
#20: Girl With One Eye - Bayou Percussion Version
If the first version sounded angry, this whole rendition sounds EVIL. I love it. I adore the more solid, darker backbeat and the violin (?) in the melody, and Florence delivers the lyrics like she’s broken into your house and IS cutting out your eye. 8.5/10.
#21: HEAVY IN YOUR ARMS
This was in the soundtrack for The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. AND GOD DAMN, IS IT HEAVY. It’s desperate, haunting, and tragic. It’s a song about heartbreak so devastating it feels like murder, but who is murdering who?? It’s just Florence’s voice annihilating us all that’s who. 9/10.
10TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION
#22: My Best Dress
Florence wrote this as a teenager about her imaginary dead boyfriends. What an icon. I love the sleepiness, the simplicity and the gothic romance of the lyrics. 6/10.
#23: Donkey Kosh
A song with this title has no right being this good. The guitar is the only instrument present on this and its use is so tightly wound, perfectly accompanied by Florence’s dampened, broody tone. The real winner for me, however, is how the lyrics and imagery sound like they’re from some medieval horror ballad about raising donkeys and jackals as your actual children. 7/10.
#24: Hospital Beds
A Cold War Kids cover. Florence takes this song and drips it in such stuffy, feverish hospital misery. I only wish she’d covered the whole thing! 6.5/10.
#25: Postcards From Italy
A Beirut cover — and supposedly only done because Florence + the Machine wanted to use their ukulele lol. It feels like a simpler cover as compared to Hospital Beds, and though Florence’s vocals are lovely I somehow feel like I can’t hear much of the song. 5/10.
#26: Swimming
Water obsession’s back. And this time she seeks to swim instead of lying facedown in it lmao. I love how orchestral this sounds, and I love how strong Florence’s vocals are! 8/10.
#27: Are You Hurting The One You Love?
This sounds so playful and bright and yet I feel its got all the trappings of a religious hymn. So basically it’s on brand, and boy do I adore it! 7.5/10.
#28: Oh! Darling
A Beatles cover. As a Beatles fan my heart is very happy, but also as a Beatles fan I’m a tad disappointed because this is from a live recording. It’s a faithful cover, but I’m bursting to see AND hear what a proper Florence + the Machine Beatles cover would be like. 4.5/10.
Overview: I fervently think that Lungs is a hurricane of a debut, and still holds its position as the band’s definitive album. It’s their rawest and most mainstream album, and therefore has this universal charm and shambles that just resonates with that messy, running-wild bit in us all. It’s a joy to see the origins of their trademark themes and watch what they do with them and then later on, where they go from it. 7.5/10.
EDIT 26/04/2023: due to the horrible lapse in taste, loss of all other reasoning and senses that led me to underestimate the banger that is Cosmic Love, I'm very happy to say Lungs' new overall score is a good solid 8/10. Peace out
