fruits basket ⇢ MOVIE NIGHT WITH THEM
ft. kyo sohma, yuki sohma, hatori sohma & shigure sohma
Tumblr media
like the good boyfriend he is, KYO lets you pick the lion king despite both of you having seen it a few times, unsuspecting of the joshing comment at the tip of your tongue. you wait to let it slip until the movie is at the scene of simba practicing his roar which comes out as a guttural meow instead. “that’s you trying to act tough,” you tease kyo, stifling a giggle when you hear the sharp exhale he releases. despite kyo pulling you closer to him, there’s a tinge of annoyance in his voice. “enjoy this because this is the last time i’m letting you pick a movie.”
Tumblr media
“this is making me hungry,” you groan, eyes glued to the screen that’s playing ratatouille, and you feel YUKI nudge you with his elbow before passing the bowl of popcorn to you. “imagine if you were able to do that in your rat form,” you tell him, referring to the scene where the rat controls the chef by his hair. your boyfriend chuckles, amused by the vision. “that would’ve been one hell of a curse.” his remark earns him a dubious look from you. “would that really be a curse though?”
Tumblr media
“did you ever wish you could’ve turned into a dragon instead?” you drone. your question is genuine but given the amount of mischief you’ve pulled on HATORI, he’s immediately suspicious. “is this why you chose shrek 2?” “you wanna change it?” your lack of attentiveness towards the conversation in favor of paying more attention to the film tells him you’re not teasing so he assures you it’s fine. shortly, he answers your first question, “sometimes.” when you only hum in acknowledgment, hatori assumes you’ve dropped the subject until he hears you mutter: “but why a seahorse?”
Tumblr media
“what would you do if there were 101 of me?” SHIGURE suddenly asks, snatching your attention away from tonight’s choice: 101 dalmatians. “shigure, just one of you is already almost intolerable,” you reply, half-focused on the television. your boyfriend pulls you closer by the waist, readjusting both of your bodies on the couch so you’re laying on his chest. “you wound me,” shigure murmurs against the top of your head and you swear you can hear the pout in his voice which makes you giggle. you finally look at him, the movie now a mere noise in the background as you plant a kiss on his lips. “i said ‘almost’.”

"Momiji, go get my bag. I left it in my locker." Haru said, picking up your sleeping form. The exhaustion you felt must've been intense.
"Why don't you go get your own bag? What are you even going to do with it?" Kyo asked, confused.
"Well, if she hasn't turned back by the time Hatori has gotten here, I'm gonna put her in my bag so we can get her out," Haru explained from his kneeling position. He looked at the human girl staring at you with stars in her eyes. "Honda, will you hold her for a second?"
"Sure." Tohru nodded, kneeling and reaching forward to grab your zodiac form. She placed your head gently in her lap. Tohru cooed, "She's so adorable."
Haru took off his jacket and wrapped it around your shivering form. He hoped Hatori would be there soon.
Momiji ran as fast as he could to Haru's locker. It was still lunch break, so he didn't have to worry about running into many people, especially girls. He couldn't afford to transform accidentally. Not when you were up there sick. He got to Haru's locker and grabbed his bag, dumping the contents inside the locker. He started making his way back to the roof when he ran into Yuki.
"Sorry, Yuki!" Momiji said, helping Yuki off the floor.
"Momiji, what has you in such a rush?" Yuki asked the younger boy.
"I can't talk right now! There's an emergency!" Momiji said and ran off. Yuki, concerned, followed the boy. When he came onto the roof, he couldn't believe what the emergency was.
You gained consciousness a few minutes after Momiji left. You were still weak, and it was hard to keep your eyes open, but you were awake.
"Oh! Y/N!" Tohru exclaimed the first one to notice your eyes open. "Are you okay?"
"A little embarrassed, if I'm honest." You muttered. "It's been years since I transformed."
It had been years since you transformed; it had been even longer since you got sick enough to change. The last time was- No. You shook the memory from your head. You didn't want to think of that right now.
"Hatori should be here soon," Haru said. Momiji slammed open the door with a grey-haired Sohma following closely behind.
"What the hell is going on?" Yuki asked, glaring at the panda.
"Y/N got too weak. She transformed." Momiji explained, bringing to bag over to Haru.
"I told you that you should've taken your ass home." Yuki sneered out.
"Come on, Yuki. Give the girl a break." Kyo said.
"Mind your own business, you stupid cat," Yuki said, turning his glare on Kyo.
"Whatever, you damn rat. Just leave her alone." Kyo said, glaring back.
"She's a damn idiot. She should have never come to school. She shouldn't even go here! She's a waste of space! She's a damn mistake!" Yuki said, his face turning red from his yelling. You just looked down at the ground.
"Yuki," Tohru said, shocked.
"Yuki, I'm gonna say this one time because you're my friend, and I love you but shut up," Haru said calmly, standing up, protectively standing in front of you. Everyone looked at him, shocked.
"Did you go dark?" Momiji asked cautiously.
"Not yet, but if Yuki doesn't cut it out, I might," Haru said, shooting the older boy a glare. Something in Haru lurched at Yuki's words. His need to protect you swelled. He could practically feel the switch in his brain teetering on the edge of becoming Dark Haru. It was silent for a few moments before Momiji's phone pinged with a message.
"Harry is here!" Momiji announced.
A cloud of smoke surrounded the group as you transformed into your human form. You turned away from the groups and grabbed your clothes to get dressed. Tohru yelped and helped block your body from the boys on the roof. That, unfortunately, didn't stop them from seeing the large, jagged scar that went diagonal on your entire back. Tohru let out a gasp of horror.
"Y/N, what-?" Tohru asked, shocked, subconsciously moving her hand to touch the scar. You flinched as you felt her fingertips and jumped away.
"Please don't." You whispered. You didn't like for it to be touched. Even your mother wouldn't touch it. It made you think about that night again. You didn't want to think about that night.
The silence was damning as everyone got lost in their thoughts. You sometimes forget that you hear the scar, but you are always quickly reminded.
"Hatori is here. We should go before you transform again." Haru said, pulling from your thoughts and grabbing your hand to pull you off the ground. You nodded and started walking toward the door. You stopped just as you reached Yuki's side. He looked at you, a bewildered expression gracing his face.
"I'm well aware that I'm a mistake, and I know you detest my existence, and for some reason, you believe I ruined your life, but do you have to mention it every time you see me? I have enough reminders." You asked him quietly and let Haru continue to lead you back into the school. As you disappeared down the stairs, Yuki stared at the ground in shock. He wasn't sure what he should feel. Seeing that scar on your back and hearing your words shook something deep in his soul.
"Yuki," Tohru said, pulling his eyes from the ground to her. She looked at him with disappointment. Her eyes were full of tears. Angry and sad tears alike. "How could you say something like that to her? Something so mean and cruel to anyone?" She stormed off the roof, rushing to catch up to you and Haru. Kyo followed her, throwing Yuki a glare.
"Yuki. You need to grow up." Momiji said, following the rest of the crew. A deep shame welled in Yuki's chest. Did he? Did he need to grow up? The disappointment in Tohru's eyes stung, but what hurt worse was the pain in yours.
~•~
"If you wanted a check-up Y/N, you could've just come and seen me," Hatori said with a friendly yet sarcastic smile.
"Sorry." You muttered. You'd finally gotten back to Shigure's house and were rushed up to Tohru's room. You laid back in her bed, a cold towel on your forehead to try and break your fever.
"Had Doc Hatori come all the way out here. Tsk, you naughty girl." Shigure said, entering the room with a bowl of soup.
"If you made that, I'm not eating it." You informed him.
"I'm hurt. I'm not a terrible cook." Shigure said dramatically, placing his hand on his chest. You and Hatori just shot him a look. He sighed. "Don't worry; our dear Tohru made it. She's mighty concerned about you."
"Tell her I'm fine. Tell the rest of them that too. They should go back to school." You muttered with a heavy sigh. You didn't need this much attention.
"I tried to tell them, but they wouldn't hear it. Dear, Hatsuharu was just about losing his mind when you fainted in the car. You're lucky you didn't transform again." Shigure said with a salacious smirk.
"Shut up." You grunted out.
"Shigure, you're distressing my patient," Hatori said with a deep sigh.
"I'm only teasing. My lovely niece knows that." Shigure said, "On a much more serious note. How did you get so sick?"
"I told you. I got rained on last night." You muttered, not looking at him. It was the truth, but you knew if he saw your eyes, he'd know you were hiding something.
"So it has nothing to do with you not having heat?" Shigure asked.
"How do you know about that?" You asked him, shocked.
"I'm co-signer on the apartment Y/N." Shigure reminded you. "I got the notices in the mail too. I didn't say anything because you want to be independent, but you obviously can't care for yourself." Shigure said in a calm voice.
"Yes, I can." You argued back.
"No, you can't. If you could, you would have used the money you get from the clan." Shigure said.
"I want nothing from the family head." You spat out venomously.
"You don't get it, do you? Your fever was high enough that it could've killed you." Shigure snapped, keeping his voice low, but his tone was angry. You weren't used to his showing emotion like this. Shigure was always calm, relaxed, and collected. "Until you can handle being on your own, you'll stay here."
"No!" You yelled—panic seizing through your chest. You couldn't handle staying under this roof. Not with Yuki here. Not with the constant reminder that you were just a mistake. You couldn't leave your childhood home. "That was mom's apartment! It's the only thing I have left of her!"
"Shigure, you need to leave." Hatori said, finally speaking up after silently watching the ordeal. He could see you starting to panic and that wouldn't do anything to help you get better.
"But-" Shigure tried to argue but Hatori cut him off.
"Now." Hatori said firmly. Shigure nodded and walked out the room, closing the door behind him. It was quiet for a moment, your breathing was raspy. Hatori moved to his bag, pulling out a stethoscope.
"You need to calm your breathing." He said, moving to sit next to you on the bed. He placed a hand on your back, but you flinched away. "Breathe Y/N. Deep breathes. Follow me."
He started taking deep breathes, prompting you to follow them. Your quick breathing calmed down and you twisted the covers under your hands. "Thanks."
"Okay, lift up the back of your shirt. Let me listen to your lungs." Hatori said, placing the ear-tips on his stethoscope in. You followed his instructions, taking deep breathes when necessary. "Lungs are a little cloudy, probably from your cold but you should be fine soon."
"Okay." You said laying back on the bed.
"When was the last time you seen a doctor?" Hatori asked.
"Technically you were the last doctor I saw, but mom became a nurse so she could take care of me." You explained.
"She did always have a proclivity for medicine." Hatori said with a sad smile.
"Yeah, she did." You agreed with a sad smile of your own. There was a short silence as Hatori started putting his equipment away.
"I'll talk to Shigure." Hatori said, moving to the door. "Get some sleep."
Hatori walked down the stairs to see a group gathered in the living room. The only one missing from the gang was Yuki, who Hatori assumed was somewhere sulking. The tv was playing, but he could tell no one was watching it. They were all lost in their own thoughts.
"Oh, Hatori! Is Y/N okay?" Tohru asked, finally noticing his presence.
"She'll be fine." Hatori informed her. Tohru nodded, but she didn't look too confident. Sure you'd get over your cold, but you were so sad and broken. The vision of the scar was stuck in her head.
"Can I- can I ask a question?" Tohru asked quietly.
"Sure Tohru, what did you need to ask?" Hatori asked.
"This is probably too far and none of my business, but do you know how Y/N got that scar on her back?" She asked quietly. Hatori and Shigure inhaled sharply.
"You saw that, huh?" Shigure asked from his spot at the table.
"Da. When she transformed back into her human form." Momiji informed him.
"While we do know how she got that scar, it's not our story to tell." Hatori said.
"Oh. I understand." Tohru mumbled looking at the ground.
"Much like the rest of you, Y/N didn't have the greatest childhood. Unfortunately that injury will always be a reminder of that. It's also the reason my sister moved them to America." Shigure said, a faraway look in his eyes as he stared at the wall. It was shocking to the others, sans Hatori, not used to seeing Shigure so serious.
"Was it-?" Haru asked, cutting his sentence short. Everyone but Tohru knew exactly what he meant. The silence that followed was confirmation enough. Tohru looked around the room confused at everyone's solemn faces. She wanted to ask, but she wasn't too sure she wanted to hear the answer.
"Shigure, can I speak to you?" Hatori asked. Shigure climbed off the floor and followed to Doctor toward the front door, away from the group.
"What's up, Doc?" Shigure asked.
"You can't force Y/N to move here." Hatori plainly replied.
"She obviously can't handle being on her own. She's still just a kid." Shigure reminded him.
"She's a kid with trauma." Hatori pointed out.
"We all have trauma, Tori." Shigure said.
"That's true, but did you see how panicked she was? Do you really think forcing her to move in here is the best idea?" Hatori asked. Shigure sighed.
"I don't know what else to do Tori. I don't want her to be alone anymore. I promised my sister I'd take care of her." Shigure spoke, running a hand through his hair.
"Shigure, look-" Hatori started but Shigure cut him off.
"I failed her before. It was my fault she got hurt. You remember how she stopped talking. Just stared off in space. She stopped eating. We thought she was going to die until my sister made the decision to move them to America. The last conversation I had with my sister, I promised I'd take care of her child. How can I do that if she's living alone? Alone outside of the compound?" Shigure said.
"I never said to drop the topic completely. I said you shouldn't force her. Convince her." Hatori said.
As the adults continued to talk, they didn't notice a pair of eavesdropping ears. Yuki stood near the top of the stairs, just out sight of the two elder Sohmas.
He was having many conflicting feelings. Yuki would never admit it out loud, but he was jealous of you. You had gotten away from the Sohmas. You had gotten away from Akito's damaging clutches. Or at least he thought you had. He hated you because he thought your life was better than his and he was jealous. Now he wasn't so sure if it was.
He silently walked toward Tohru's room to peek in. You were asleep, but you were obviously uncomfortable. You restless turned your body, subconsciously trying to find a comfortable position. He noticed the empty bowl of soup on the end table. He crept in the room to grab the bowl. When he got near you, he pulled the covers up to your shoulders and adjusted the towel on your head. That seemed to calm you down enough to make you stop moving.
He looked over your face. You looked like a young kid, so innocent.
With a deep sigh, he sat on the floor leaning his back against the bed. He closed his eyes and started speaking to you, though he knew you wouldn't hear a word he would say. "I've hated you all my life. From a young age I was taught to hate you because you were the panda. Then as we got older, I hated you more. I thought you had the perfect life. You weren't under the Sohma thumb. Not under Akito's thumb. You had a mother who cared. I thought you were evil and I hated you because why does someone evil deserve a good life while mine was terrible. But maybe I was wrong. Maybe you aren't so bad."
With that, he stood grabbing the bowl and walked out the room. When the door closed, you opened your eyes and wiped away a few stray tears.
"Maybe."

Every Morning Felt the Same

I wrote this a while ago and I had no idea how long it was until now! After starting the final season I came back to it and spiffed it up a little and well... here it is!
Feel free to send requests!
Fic below the cut
I was walking to school as I normally do; listening to music. Left turn, right turn, wait at the light. Every morning felt the same. However ever since the beginning of this year I have started coming out of my shell. As unapproachable the girls have made Yuki Sohma we have somehow become rather good friends. It was awkward at first but I’ve gotten used to the staring from the “Prince Yuki Fan Club” garbage. It wasn’t as if I liked him, we were just close friends. I have gotten to know him and his friends over the last few months. Yuki and his cousin Kyo have a very interesting dynamic to say the least. It seems as if they are cat and mouse, but the mouse always outsmarts the cat.
It was finally time to go home; I could be considered lucky in that regard. I am an exchange student. I have my own student apartment that the school pays for me to live in. It can get fairly lonely on the weekends or during breaks. I’m fairly introverted and only really talk to Yuki and Co. during the school day. My japanese can be pretty rough at times, but I understand enough to get by. With winter break coming up I was preparing to celebrate New Years by myself like I have the past few years. It’s just not worth it to go home for the holidays; the break is too short to make the price tag worth it. I almost have grown to love being by myself; after a long day at school the silence is calming.
My normal path home is fairly straightforward, but the idea of the upcoming holiday clouded my mind. I had somehow ended up walking past my usual turn without realizing and continued on into the forest on the outskirts of the town. A cold gust of air brought me out of my trance; I looked around wildly unfamiliar with my surroundings. As I turned on my heels to go back the way I came; to my utter disbelief a white snake blocked my path.
Now I didn’t hate snakes, but I admired them from afar or held well handled pets. Very unlike any snake, or wild animal, I’ve ever seen it slithered up to me. I didn’t want to startle it, on the off chance it’s hungry so I stood as still as possible gripping my school bag against my chest. A cool scaly feeling enveloped my calf, as the snake slithered up it. I gripped my eyes shut, praying it just went away after realizing I was not edible. Then it dawned on me, it was below freezing, and snakes are cold blooded… and I’m warm blooded… NOW I'M A SPACE HEATER FOR A SNAKE!
I couldn’t help the yelp that escaped my lips as I felt the snake take refuge under my shirt. Whether it be divine intervention or my (un)lucky day a man came walking toward me on the frozen path. He was dressed in a simple yukata with shaggy black hair. He looked at me calmly and then to my… chest? HE’S LOOKING AT MY BOOBS! I looked down as I saw a little snake head pop up. He’s looking at the snake… Why is the snake looking back at him?
“I see you got yourself into a situation” the man laughed. He didn’t seem to be speaking to me, but almost to the snake?
“Yes, uh… please help” I whispered. I didn’t want to bother the snake for fear of it biting me. In my awkward fear I happened to answer in english instead of japanese. The man tilted his head, and I just assumed he didn’t understand me. I opened my mouth to repeat myself, but he cut me off.
“You’re y/n, right?” He said back in perfect english. “Yuki’s friend from school”. He talks about me?
“Yes, sir.” I said. “Is there any way you can help me? I switched the conversation back to japanese. It always felt rude to make someone accommodate me, even if I wasn't the best speaker.
“Come down the road to the house with me. I can help you better there” He chuckled. “And don’t worry about how you speak. Do what is most comfortable.”
We trotted along the path rather slowly, I did not want the snake to fall or worse. It was only a couple minutes. We exchanged pleasantries. The man was Shigure-san Yuki and Kyo’s uncle who they lived with. From my time being friends with them I’ve only really heard Tohru mention him a few times. I never really hear the boys talk about their family, it seems to be a touchy subject.
We finally arrived at the house. It was pretty nice considering it was in the middle of the woods. As we got inside the snake slithered down my leg and decided that the house was his now. I relaxed my tense muscles. I guess I didn’t have to stay very long. I looked around, still standing in the entryway. I noticed Kyo sitting at the low table and I smiled politely at him. He looked up when he heard the commotion.
“What are you doing here?” He asked, shocked. It seems visitors are not abundant here. “What did you do to her?!” he yelled at Shigure-san.
“Nothing! Why would I do anything to one of Yuki’s beloved friends?” Shigure shrugged off.
“Oh, um there was a snake…” I started. Yuki had just entered the room. He looked up when he heard the word snake.
“A snake here is it now, y/n-san?” he looked around… angrily? “What did it look like?” He blurted. I wasn’t very used to Yuki not being calm and collected. This was definitely a change of pace for him. I guess he really doesn’t like snakes. As I was about to open my mouth to answer, another boisterous man with long silver hair burst into the room
“Yuki-kun! Have you missed me? I wanted to come visit you but it was so cold! Without this fine lady I would have never made it” he swoons. The man walked over to me and grabbed my hand, pulling me into the house, my shoes left in the entryway.
“Aw sweet, y/n-chan” He started, bringing my hand up to his mouth to kiss it. “Thank you so much for your kind nature! Without you I would surely have been left for dead”
Dead? I thought. I don’t recognize him, he kind of looks like Yuki. I don’t think I’ve ever met him. How does he know my name? The only thing I carried here was…
“The snake.” I whispered. I looked up to see familiar yellow orbs. “You… you were the s..snake” I stammered. “How is that even possible, humans can’t be snakes, snakes are snakes” I gripped my hair in my hands as I thought how this could ever be possible.
“My sweet love, don’t grip your beautiful hair” he said as he went to grab my hands. Both Yuki and Kyo shoved themselves between me and the strange man.
“Don’t touch her” Yuki said sternly. He shoved me behind him. I lost my balance and fell into his back. I heard a pop and a cloud of smoke appeared as I fell into nothing. In front of me was a little silver… rat?
“What?” I gasped. At this point I just assumed I was dreaming. “Are you supposed to be Yuki-kun now? I guess you are kind of cute.” I whispered as I scooped up the little thing. Kyo turned to Shigure- san.
“Look what you caused?” He yelled. “And you” he turned to the other man. “What the hell were you thinking?!” Shigure sighed. Looking at the man with his hand scratching his head.
“Well Ayame, I guess we got into an even worse situation” He laughs.
…..
“A curse?” I whisper. The Sohma’s had explained everything to me. I finally now realize more than I did before. Why Yuki was so shy, how Tohru acted when I talked about their home life. Why Kyo always seemed on edge. All of this bewildered me.
“So now what?” I asked shyly. “I promise I won’t say anything to anyone of course! I… I just don’t really know what to say” I looked down into my lap.
“Time to call Hatori I guess,” Shigure-san said as he stood up. Everyone had a solemn look on their face.
“Who is that?” I asked slightly afraid. “Am… am I going to die?” I looked up nervously into Shigure-sans eyes as mine began to water. “I… I promise, please” Tears begin to fall down my cheeks. Tohru, who had come home in the middle of this, offered me a tissue.
“Of course not y/n-chan” He said looking down seriously. “We just can’t have people knowing is all.” Ayame-san caressed my face and wiped away my tears.
“Do not worry, not a pretty little hair on your head will be harmed” He whispered to me. Yuki snatched me away from him.
“This is your fault to begin with.” Yuki said sternly. “Without your whole scheme we would have never been in this mess” This continues on for a while, Yuki being mad at what I now learned is his older brother, and Ayame begging Yuki to forgive him while still being a strange sort of arrogant. I just sat with Tohru, watching the whole thing unfold. Kyo had gone out shortly after this began, Tohru mentioned a Sensei so I assume it was martial art practice of some sort. Ayame-san turned to me and Tohru.
“I have an excellent idea” He sang out, almost twirling over to the two of us. “If we pretend to be together, there is a chance it will be okay!”
“T...Together? What do you mean by that?” I looked up at him, my eyes still a little puffy from before. “Like dating?” Shigure-san just walked back into the room as those words left my mouth.
“Who are you dating now? Ayame? So scandalous!” He wiggled. Yuki facepalmed, fed up with everything.
“You can’t think that’s possibly a good idea.” Yuki sighed. “First of all, I don’t want you anywhere near her, and second you’re almost twice her age. That would never work”
“An apprentice with benefits then!” Ayame hoisted me up and twirled me around. His arm wrapped around my shoulder but not enough to where our bodies were touching. His hand picked my chin up to look at him.
“Look at those sad e/c eyes.” he sighed. “You need some excitement in your life” He whispered in my ear. Yuki pulled me away from his clutches and looked into my eyes.
“Don’t listen to him.” He warned. His eyes were filled with pain. I wondered if this had happened to him before. Tohru seemed to know and be fine, so why couldn't I?
“I don’t want to lose my friends” My eyes fill with tears. “I don’t know what to do, I don't want to hurt you or your family, and I don’t want to lose you” I sob. I couldn't think straight enough to worry about japanese or anything for that matter. “I’ll do anything to just not be alone again”
The room was silent apart from my sniffling. The mood shifted to a depressing tone. Reality had sunk in. The Shomas realized either they try this or let this girl forget. I looked up over everyone.
“I’ll try anything”
…..
Over the last month going to work with Ayame-san was almost tiring. Although he seemed like an airhead, there is definitely something going on in his head that I just can’t guess. I assume it comes with his whole family dynamic. Although I was supposed to be his assistant, I feel like he was holding out for the whole “pretending to be dating” thing. Thank god he couldn’t touch me without becoming a snake; although that did happen a few times. Ayame-san as often as he could would be sure to “teach me” and “guide me” to what I needed to do. Mine-san seemed to keep him in check when we were in the studio, but when we had to run errands it was definitely towing the line.
Yuki always asked if I was okay first thing every morning before homeroom, and walked me home after I was done with Ayame-san every night. I assured him everything was fine. I didn’t want to lose my friends. It wasn’t that bad, it could be annoying at times but I feel like I learned a lot about myself and how to sew; so that's a plus.
One particular night after my apprenticeship, Mine-san pulled me aside. “y/n-chan, you’re doing really well. Most girls would have run for the hills by now!” she laughed. “You’ve gone from this shy little thing, to a young woman who can hold her own!”
“y/n-Chan!” rang out a familiar sing-song voice. Ayame-san waltzed out of the studio. “Do you think you can do me a favor?!” He sang out.
“I guess it depends on what it is exactly, Ayame-san.” I huff looking down the road seeing Yuki walking towards us.
“Well, I’ve been called to the estate. I was wondering if you would like to join me. Shigure said I should bring you!” He grabbed onto my arm and gave me puppy dog eyes. “You can meet Hatori!” Ayame chirped.
“Well I guess I can. If you really want me too” I said as Yuki neared closer. “I'll see you tomorrow then Ayame-san.” I called out as I ran towards Yuki.
“What was that about?” Yuki questioned as we walked towards my apartment. I hopped onto a small wall lining the sidewalk. With my arms out for balance I continued in front of him, spinning on the balls of my feet and walking backwards while facing him.
“He invited me to the estate with him and Shigure-san.” I replied, stopping in my tracks. “I said I would go.” I looked down at him nervously.
“Are you sure that’s a good idea y/n-san?” He looked up at me. He looked rather worried. I was starting to think that saying yes may not have been my brightest idea.
…..
The Saturday morning sun crept into my apartment window. I knew today was going to be… interesting. Shigure-san was nice enough to let me come over in the morning to figure everything out. Ayame-san told me he would have something for me to wear for dinner. Seeing his tastes in clothing it probably was not going to be fun.
When I arrived at the house, it was as rambunctious as always. Yuki and Kyo were lost in one of their usual arguments. They didn’t notice that I entered the house. Shigure-san looked up from his paper and smiled in my direction.
“Good morning, y/n-chan.” he chimed. The two boys looked over in the midst of fighting. I’ve seen them argue but I’ve never seen them fight. Both boys were breathing heavily; sweat rolling down their foreheads. This was rather surprising, Yuki is normally so calm, and collected. Over the past month I’ve learned more about him and my friends. Spending more time with him has made our friendship stronger. Although, it seems to be different now. Yuki has expressed his distrust of his brother. He has even started walking me to the shop, and even to school since my apartment is on the way. I’ve enjoyed spending more time with him… almost more than before. I shook my head at this thought.
“Is everything okay?” He asks endearingly, giving me a smirk. “Ready for your date with Ayame-san?” I blushed bright red at that comment.
“Uh… well… I didn’t think of it that way” I stammered. I brought my hand up to the back of my head, rubbing it sheepishly. Yuki snapped his head over to Shigure-san.
“No way, is that what he thinks is going to work” He seethed. “She never would have agreed to that if those were the terms. Isn't that right y/n-san?” Yuki looked at you sincerely.
“Well I… I wasn’t aware of that. I just assumed it was to meet Hatori-san” I looked down at my feet.
“Don’t worry kids” Shigure-san said as he resumed his paper “It’s just a ploy to allow y/n-chan to the Sohma estate.”
“So I have to pretend I’m dating Ayame-san in order to go?” I looked at Shigure. “Why did no one tell me” I huffed. He looked up at me and smiled.
“Because you wouldn’t have agreed otherwise”
…..
After a “fun” day at the Sohma house it was finally time. Ayame-san arrived with a bag with my name on it to wear. I looked inside; it looked like the pieces of a kimono. I looked up at him.
“I’ve never worn one before… I’m not sure how” I said shyly. Ayame-san snaked an arm around my shoulders.
“That’s okay my love, I can help you put it on for you.” he said coyly. Shigure-san also stood up. “What about me?” he added. Yuki came to my side and took my hand. He dragged you away from the men and up the stairs.
“Or I guess he could.” Shigure-san said defeatedly.
I have never been upstairs in the house before. It wasn't anything special, just everyone's rooms. Yuki still hasn’t said anything as he basically dragged me to his...room. I’m in his room. Those “Prince Yuki” bitches would pay thousands to be in my shoes right now.
“You can change here if you want.” He said shyly. Yuki looked away and blushed. “Tohru isn’t here, otherwise you’d be in her room.”
“I… I don’t know how to put it on” I stammered. “I need help” I looked down at my feet. Yuki took his hand under my chin and pointed it up. His gray eyes looking into my e/c ones.
“I’ll try my best.” He smiled. “There’s no reason for you to be embarrassed, Ayame should have known better. It was definitely one of his tricks.”
Yuki left the room to allow me to get the under clothes on. Once I was done I let him back in. The kimono almost felt like a large sweater. The material was soft and airy. Yuki with his cheeks dusted red, reached around me to gather the material in the way it needed to be. He tied a sort of belt near my waist to gather the fabric. It was not as difficult as I thought it would have been, but I would not have been able to do it correctly myself.
“Thank you, Yuki-san” I said as I pinned my hair up. I looked over at him and smiled brightly.
“Anytime y/n-san” he smiled back blush still sprinkling his cheeks.
…..
The Shoma Estate was huge. I felt like a small child as we approached. Shigure and Ayame walked in front of me, laughing about something or other. My nerves were boiling up, Kyo mentioned how intimidating it can be, especially if you looked out of place. Shigure-san looked back at me and noticed I was staring at the ground. He nudged Ayame-san's arm and pointed back at me. He twirled around towards me and latched onto my arm.
“You’re my date! You should at least look happy” He sang out. I looked around to see some women walking, giving me a disapproving glare.
“I guess I’m just nervous” I squeak. “This place is kind of intimidating” Shigure-san fell into step with us.
“Don’t worry y/n-chan” Shigure-san said “Everything will be alright in the end” He smiled. We arrived at the place we were supposed to meet. It was such a large house. I don’t think I’ve seen one this large since moving from the states. Once we entered, a man greeted us in the entryway.
“Ah Hatori!” Ayame-san said. “How are you! I’ve missed you!” he cried out as he went to hug him. Hatori side stepped and Ayame fell to the floor.
“I assume you’re y/n-chan” Hatori-san said to me.
“Yes, sir” I replied with a bow. Hatori shuffled us into the house and into a traditional dining room. Ayame-san and I sat down together. Hatori stopped Shigure in the doorway.
“Shigure, do you really think this is okay?” Hatori whispered.
“I sure hope so.” He replied.
…..
Dinner went well. It was just the four of us. I was so worried that there was going to be a huge amount of people. I’m so glad there wasn’t. The three men had been drinking, however Hatori-san seemed to be the only one with any sense left. Shigure and Ayame were being as loud as ever, saying risque things towards me.
As we were getting ready to leave, I heard a crash through the house. The sliding door was slammed open and a thin figure was hanging on to the door frame. Hatori immediately jumped to his feet and walked over to the person. The light in the hallway was off so it was hard to see. Shigure-san almost seemed to sober up as this was happening and got up and walked into the other room.
“Let me see her.” the person said as they clawed at the door frame. It looked like they could barely stand. Their robe falling off their shoulder allowed me to see just how thin they were. I shuffled back on the floor only stopping when I hit the wall.
“Let me see her.” they said again menacingly. Hatori-san looked over to me, there was pain in his eyes. I understood he couldn’t do much to stop them.
My heart raced as they came over. They grabbed my face leaving nail marks on my cheeks. My eyes started to water. I had no idea what was going on let alone what to do.
“What’s your name?” they seethed
“y/n” I squealed out meekly.
“You know they don’t like you. They never will. You should just stop trying” they dropped my face and I fell to my knees. I couldn’t stop the tears. Yuki burst through the door and looked on in horror.
“You’re right.” I whispered. Their words resonated with me. I wasn’t part of their world. They had so much more on their plate with Tohru already. They don’t need to worry about me. The person said something to Hatori that I didn’t understand and left the room. Yuki looked at me with tears in his eyes as he crouched in front of me. My tears fell like waterfalls as I cried into my hands.
“I’m so sorry, y/n-san. You should have never been a part of this,” he whispered as he grabbed my hands. “I really did like you. I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you. I’ll never forget you” he kissed my forehead.
Hatori helped me get to my feet and brought me into another room. I closed my eyes as I wiped the tears away.
…..
I was walking to school as I normally do; listening to music. Left turn, right turn, wait at the light. Every morning felt the same.

Kyo Sohma x Reader (Fluff)
Warning: uh... None?
A/n: I think was absolutely cute. Low-key kinda proud of this one!
"T-Tohru?" You asked the brunette girl standing about five feet away from you. She was accompanied by two very attractive young men, one with silver hair and one with orange hair. She turned to where you were and her eyes widened.
"(Y/n)? Is… is that really you?!" You nodded and you two ran towards each other, your (h/l) (h/c) hair flowing behind you. You two collided in a hug and you stayed like that, silently crying into each other's shoulders.
"Miss Honda? Who is this?" The silver haired male asked behind you and Tohru.
"Oh! Yuki! This is my sister!" She smiled brightly.
"You have a sister?!" The orange haired male practically yelled and it made you frown slightly.
"Calm down you dumb cat. No need to yell, we are right here." Yuki spoke coolly.
"Shut up stupid rat!" The ginger yelled again.
"Oh! It's okay Kyo! No one really knows!" Tohru smiled nervously.
"Why's that? She got something wrong with her?" Kyo asked a bit rudely and you frowned even further.
"Do you ever know when to shut up?" Yuki responded, irritation laced in his words.
"What? If no one really knows about her there has to be something wrong with her! No one would just want to keep their child a secret!" Tears started to prick the corners of your eyes. He didn't even know you! How could he just say that?!
"You don't even know me, you pathetic excuse for a human being." Anger and sadness are very evident in your voice. "You have no right to say anything about me, even if it's just an assumption. No one knew about me because I was given up for an open adoption. Our mother didn't make enough money to keep both of us and decided an open adoption was best for everyone. We still got to see each other and spend time together. That's why no one really knows about me, you asshat!" You shouted at the ginger male.
"HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT?! YOU DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING!"
"YOU NEVER ASKED NOR GAVE ME A CHANCE TO EVEN SAY IT!" You shouted right back.
"I'm sorry for his ignorance miss….."
"(L/n), (y/n) (l/n). It's a pleasure to meet you Yuki." You said and then bowed. "And it's quite alright. It's not like you're the reason he has no filter." You spoke towards Kyo that time and the anger in his eyes was showing. "Next time you want to say something about someone, make sure you have the facts first." After that you ignored Kyo every chance you got. But now being at the same school as your sister, you tended to spend a lot of time at the Sohma household. Even Shigure had taken a liking to you, I mean… what young school girl HASNT he taken a liking too. But you were different, you tending to flirt back with Shigure, who in return, would usually just go back to his room because he had no idea what the fuck to do with that. He never had someone down right flirt back before and he was a bit awkward about it.
"I've never seen Shigure retreat to his room so quickly before." Yuki spoke surprised.
"Has anyone ever flirted back with him?" You asked as you ate the rice balls your sister made.
"No."
"Well then that's why, the poor old man probably hasn't got a good lay in years and now doesn't know how to respond to someone flirting back." You said nonchalantly which caused the others to spit out their food. "What?"
"That's fucking gross, (y/n)!" Kyo yelled.
"Don't listen then gingy." He rolled his eyes and that's when you two got into another argument. By the time you both cooled down you realized that everyone had left the house. They just…. Left. You groaned as kyo walked towards you.
"What wrong now?"
"Nothing.. just everyone left when they said they would go to the park with me." You pouted. Kyo couldn't help but let a small smile slip into his face.
"The park?"
"Yes! I wanted to swing on the swing set and go down the slide. Maybe play tag or hide and seek."
"Doesn't that sound a bit… childish?"
"So?! It's fun!" You argued, making Kyo pinch the bridge of his nose in annoyance.
"I'll go with you if it'll make you stop pouting." You instantly smiled. You didn't care if it was Kyo, the boy you may have hated but also had a stupid crush on, you had someone to go to the park with you.
"Yay! Let's go!" You grabbed your hands and ran towards the door to put your shoes. You dragged him out the door and all the way to the park, hand in hand. Kyo couldn't help the small blush that crept onto his face as he looked at your connected hands. Fingers laced together. It just felt… right to Kyo. He would never admit out loud that he liked you. Your personality, the way you were proud of who you were and the things you did, the way your eyes sparkled when you talk about your favorite food or the way you could hold your own against him. The way you would get angry when he beat you while sparring, knowing you weren't trained like him but still went against him anyway. He shook his head and cleared his mind when you two came to a stop.
"So, what do you want to do first?" He asked while putting his hands in his pockets.
"Let's see you can swing the highest!" You smiled and ran towards the swing set. Another small smile made it ways to his face as he watched you get excited about swings. You waited for him and smiled when he sat next to you. "Okay, the first one to reach the top bar wins!"
"What do I get if I win?" He asked.
"Anything you want! And if I win, anything I want!" You smirked, you were the best damn swinger in the world. You got this in the bag.
"Deal."
~~~
"I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND! HOW THE FUCK DID YOU WIN!?" You yelled once you reached the Sohma household after hours of swinging rematches.
"Long legs short stack." He chuckled as you pouted. You two entered the house and it was still empty. "They went out for dinner." Kyo said, coming next to you with a note written in Tohru's handwriting.
"Oh.. okay then. Want me to make something for dinner?" You asked as you made your way into the kitchen.
"Sure." Kyo shrugged and followed you. "So, I thought of what I wanted for winning." He said nervously.
"And?"
"Kiss me." He whispered, if he wasn't standing directly behind you, his mouth right next to your ear, you would've never heard him. You slowly turned to look him in the face.
"What?" You couldn't believe he said that. You had to have been dreaming! There was no way in Hell that Kyo Sohma would ask you to kiss him.
"Kiss me." He repeated himself. You didn't even have time to think as your face moved closer to his own. The two of you locked lips and butterflies immediately began to warm your tummy. It was perfect.
He pulled you closer, bodies flush against one another. Your arms around his neck and his around your waist. That's when his eyes shot open and he pushed back a bit. He saw the look of hurt in your eyes and felt awful. He looked at himself, awe stricken. He hadn't transformed. He was still human. He looked back at you who now had a look of confusion written on your face. He smiled and pulled you closer to him, crashing his lips against yours. It was filled with passion and love and need and hunger. Once you two pulled away, breathing heavily, you asked. "What was that push about?" He pecked your lips again.
"I'll explain some other time. Right now, I just want to hold you, okay? Please?" You didn't hesitate to bid your head yes. You spent the rest of the time cuddling on the couch. When the others came home, they found the two of you cuddled on the couch sleeping peacefully.
"He didn't turn?" A surprised Yuki asked.
"I guess he found his one true soulmate." Shigure shrugged and smiled. "Too bad too, I was ready to finally flirt back with her." Yuki then slapped him upside the head.
"I'm so glad they are happy together." Tohru smiled and placed a light green blanket over the two of you. "Goodnight sis, night Kyo. Sleep peacefully." Everyone went to their separate rooms and went to bed. The next day you awoke alone on the couch. You entered the kitchen.
"So, care to explain why you pushed me away last night, Kyo?" Everyone looked at the two of you and sighed. Kyo then began the story of the zodiac and your eyes widened. "WHAT?! NO WAY! TOHRU, HUG HIM I WANNA SEE KITTY KYO!" Suddenly Kyo ran and you chased him.
"Well, I think they are a perfect couple." Yuki smirked.
Fruits Basket (2019)
Tumblr media
*Artwork credited to みるき on pixiv*
Just watched the last episode of the new Fruits Basket anime. Wow, what an emotional ride! I'm someone who watched the original 26-episode anime from the early 2000s but never continued the story through the manga (I considered buying the manga volumes but never followed through with it...I'm just more into anime than manga). It's so great to finally know the complete story behind one of my favorite anime. I wanted to share my thoughts here, as someone who knew nothing about what happens from where the original 2001 anime left off (spoiler warning from here on)...
- Kureno and Rin were the two zodiac members who never appeared in the original anime. It was nice to finally see them and I think they were both good characters.
- The four student council members that Yuki interacts with were also new to me. I can't say I liked them much overall as they (mostly) seemed to be comic relief and I didn't think they were that funny or interesting. I also found myself wondering why we got these new characters when the show already has such a large ensemble - a lot of their filler screentime could have gone to developing the more "forgotten" zodiac members, like Ritsu (seriously, why was Ritsu totally shafted?) But the relationship between Machi and Yuki was cute at least.
-The background music for the series was really nice, though the opening and ending songs didn't really grab me. But then again, the opening song from the original anime, "For Fruits Basket" by Ritsuko Okazaki, is such a beautiful song - one of my favorite anime tunes and very hard to outshine!
- I adored the relationship between Arisa and Kureno, probably more than any other relationship in the show! I couldn't get enough of those early episodes where they first met...but then I was sad when it seemed like they would never be able to get together. Glad that wasn't the case in the end!
- I'm still not clear on what Shigure's motivations were throughout the series. Even in the original anime, although he seemed jovial and fatherly, I could tell he had some ulterior motives. But even in this new series, I'm still not sure what his intentions were. According to the Fruits Basket wiki, he also wanted to break the curse, but his methods didn’t click with me...and he did some pretty despicable things in the past. But did he genuinely care about Tohru and the others or was he just using them for some less than pure purpose? Obviously it’s revealed that he’s always been in love with Akito, but often it seemed like he did more sadistic things to her than trying to help her. I dunno, I just couldn't quite figure Shigure out.
- The backstory with Kyo first encountering Tohru and coincidently forming a bond with Kyoko felt slightly contrived, but it was still nice to see their interactions. The fact that Kyo will forever wonder whether Kyoko actually said that she’d never forgive him is frustrating though. I know Tohru somewhat convinced him that she’d never say that, and the audience obviously knows she didn’t, but I feel like Kyo might still have doubts.
- There were a lot of episodes that got me right in the feels, but the backstory episode about the origin of the zodiac animals’ bonds with “god” was amazing! It was such an emotional shock to finally know where that bond came from and why it was so strong, and then to subsequently see each Sohma break their bond one by one. Such a memorable episode and definitely one of my favorites.
- I tried, but it was really hard for me to feel much sympathy for Akito. I know she had her own personal hell she was living in, but her cruelty towards the others was pretty unbearable. Even though she felt bad about it in the end and was willing to turn over a new leaf, she should have gotten some kind of punishment for what she did. It’s not like she was just a bully - she has many accounts of literal attempted murder and assault behind her. Just saying “sorry” and feeling bad shouldn’t be enough to atone for that in my opinion. I know the Sohmas probably avoid interacting with law enforcement out of fear that their secret will be found out, but they could still punish Akito on their own accord. I know the show heavily advocates forgiveness, but still, accountability when it matters is important too.
- Since I only ever watched the original anime, I never knew who Tohru ended up with. Even though the original series ended strongly on her relationship with Kyo, I still thought Yuki had a chance. I didn’t really have a preference, but now that I’ve seen the new series, I think Kyo makes more sense. His character development from anger-filled delinquent to a caring and confident young man was fantastic and definitely one of the highlights of the series. Though the huge time skip in the final episode’s epilogue was a bit...too far into the future, lol. I would have preferred seeing each of the Sohmas say goodbye to Tohru instead, since they kept talking about it throughout the episode but then we never see them sending her off.
Overall, it was an emotional but rewarding experience to finally know the complete story behind an anime that’s been among my favorites for almost 20 years. I was satisfied with how the original anime ended, but I still longed to know the complete story. Even though the emotional moments and character monologues did sometimes drag on a bit, and the comedic scenes didn’t always hit their mark for me, Fruits Basket’s good points more than outweigh its bad points in my opinion. What it lacks in some aspects it makes up for in excellent drama and compelling character arcs. I’m many years late, but I’m glad I didn’t miss out on knowing the full story!
The cycle of abuse and Akito
As I go through a lot of anime-only reactions to Akito’s backstory, I’ve noticed some patterns in what people are thinking and a lot of questions about why Akito turned out the way she did, because even though she had an abusive childhood, so did many of the other characters. She’s not alone in that. But none of the other characters turned out as physically and emotionally abusive as she did. So why did that happen to her?
The most important thing to understand about Akito is that after her father (who put her up on a pedestal) died, she has never had a true, loving bond or relationship with anyone, not even with anyone in the zodiac (it can be argued that Shigure truly loves her, but their relationship has been far from loving). Her mother absolutely despises her and abuses her psychologically, never mind the fact that she also decided that Akito would be raised as a boy, negating her the right to understand her own gender identity and be able to live genuinely. On top of that, none of the other members of the zodiac reach out to her with genuine affection.
Of course, they don’t reach out to her because she actively engages in behaviors that push the zodiac members away, regardless of their bond. She belittles them, manipulates them, physically attacks and hurts them without regard. She should know not to do this, right? She should be able to realize that if she hurts someone, they won’t want to stay with her, right?
No, she doesn’t know that. Her father constantly told her that their bonds were permanent and unbreakable. She was promised eternity. That no matter what she did, the members of the zodiac would stay by her side and love her. When Kureno’s curse breaks, she begins to question this, but only for a while, because Kureno stays with her anyway — further enabling her. When no one else’s curse breaks, she feels relief again. There’s no way that the curse would break for anyone else. Her father might have been wrong about one of the bonds, but the rest of the bonds are permanent. She explains this as she speaks to Ren regarding Yuki moving out of the Sohma estate. She still believed.
So she takes out her pain on them. Her resentment, her sadness, her anger, and her trauma. She doesn’t know that the curse is going to break for more than just Kureno. She doesn’t believe it to be possible. So what does it matter how she treats them? In her eyes, they exist only to make sure that she’s loved. She needs that reassurance, because her mother sure as hell does not provide any love. She self-sabotages without realizing it because she’s lonely, but she doesn’t understand why. She is already on the 'outside,' treated differently, so maybe a small part of her thinks, “What does it matter if I push myself out even further? They’ll still be there to love me in the end.”
As for the other zodiac members who experienced troubled childhoods, they were made to feel small and powerless by the people around them. Akito is the head of the household. She has power over them, and the maids who work in the Sohma estate constantly enable her abuse of that power. She needs that power to feel like she won’t be left behind. At least Kyo had Kazuma and Kyoko growing up. At least Yuki and Rin both had Haru. Momiji had his cheery outlook and easy demeanor. Akito had bonds that were not bonds but chains, and love that was artificial. She barely stood a chance.
(And yet, none of that excuses any of the harm that she inflicted on anyone. No matter how badly she was treated by her mother or how lonely she feels, that doesn’t give her the right to take that pain out on others. But at least we can understand why she would do that in the first place.)
Please don’t argue over whether Yuki or Kyo had a worse upbringing
Because that’s literally missing the entire point of the story, that people may experience different traumas and are able to heal at their own pace. Don’t presume that someone else has it better, like these two boys did with each other, because you don’t know their story. Kyo and Yuki’s backstories are written to be foils for each other.
Social Status
Kyo is an ostracized outsider that the Sohma clan hates, while Yuki is the celebrated Rat boy who is God’s favorite. They’re both gossiped about but one is pitied and the other envied. Yuki and Kyo’s roles in the Sohma clan are “winner” and “loser”, respectively. The Sohma’s believe that life is a competition where people are judged against each other, and the winner is happier and more worthy than the loser.
Kyo is seen as less-than-human - the Monster, while Yuki is seen as more-than-human - the Prince! Kyo is beneath everyone and deserves to serve a life sentence, while Yuki is put on a pedestal. Both positions are dehumanizing and lonely. The other zodiacs socialized with Kyo because his inferiority makes them feel better about their own sorry circumstances - as explained by Kagura in S02E11. They don’t socialize with Yuki because he’s above them, at the right hand of God.
Kyo naturally socializes with people but is inferior in every visible accomplishment compared to Yuki. Yuki outcompetes Kyo in every competition that Kyo initiates, including swimming, martial arts, running. etc. On the other hand, even though Yuki is considered more naturally talented and accomplished in every measure, but doesn’t know how to socialize. It's degrading to be at the bottom and it's lonely to be at the top.
Family
These poor boys both experienced horrific trauma from their parents as a direct consequence of the above mentioned assigned social statuses. Kyo’s biological parents are pained by his birth and have said that they wish he had never been born. Yuki’s parents were greatly rewarded for giving birth to the Rat. Even though their birth had opposite effects on their parents’ social status within the Sohma clan, both sets of parents abandoned their sons. That being said, Kyo and Yuki were abused and abandoned in very different ways. Kyo is considered a monster which lowers his parent's status. His mom confined Kyo to their home, ashamed and afraid to let anyone else see Kyo. Yuki raises his parent's status, so his parents give him away to Akito and refuses to let him return home.
Both Yuki and Kyo's parents told their sons that they have no inherent value as people, that they are hated by everyone else and that no one will accept them for who they are. Kyo was told that no one will accept his monster form, first implied by his mom’s actions every day for the first few years of his life, and then tragically proven when Kagura ran away from his True Form.
Yuki is told that he’s worthless since his only value comes from a bond with Akito - Akito is the true source of worth here. Yuki’s parents tells him that he has no inherent value as a person, only as a tool for social status and wealth. Kyo’s mother chose death over raising him and his biological father wishes Kyo’s death and life-long punishment. Yuki’s parents abandoned him with apathy. Kyo’s mother lied to him that she loved and accepted him for who he was. Yuki’s mother was truthful and never acted as though she loved him.
After Kyo’s and Yuki’s abandonment by their biological parents due to opposite reasons, their experiences under their new caretakers diverged even more. Kyo was undesirable and publicly abandoned by his parents. Kazuma became Kyo’s new caretaker, initially out of pity. Yuki, however, was desired - but by a malicious family head who wanted to assert control over him. Yuki’s parents “desired” him - albeit only for personal material gains - and hence emotionally and physically abandoned him, but never officially. Publicly, his mother still drove him to school and took him to New Years banquets. Kyo’s new caretaker grew to love Kyo like a son and gave him unconditional parental support and love. However, Kyo’ was never able to fully connect and bond with Kazuma because he’s continually told by the Sohma’s that he’s undeserving of love (until Tohru, that is). Even though Kazuma and Kyo loved each other like father and son, Kyo doubted their relationship because everyone else whispers that Shisho only took in Kyo for the money or out of pity. Yuki, on the other hand, was left to Akito's whims. As we know, Akito made Yuki's life a living hell. Kyo received hate then love that he wasn’t able to trust that it was real, while Yuki received complete apathy and then hate.
Kyo mattered immensely to his parents and they in turn had immense impacts on his life. Kyo’s biological father tells his son that his life is ruined by Kyo and that Kyo drove his mother to suicide. Kyo’s mother loved him in a tragic flawed way and chose to kill herself in front of him. Akito says that Kyo’s mother wrote in her suicide note that she wished that she had given birth to the Rat instead of the Cat.
Toxic Competition
Because Yuki and Kyo had experienced opposite reasoning behind their trauma, they each look to the other for what they don’t have but long to have. The Sohma clan pits them against each other, represented by Kyo’s bet with Akito to win against Yuki. They pit themselves against each other - Kyo envying Yuki for receiving public admiration, while Yuki envies Kyo for connecting easily with others. Yuki compares himself with Kakeru and thinks "I instantly compare myself to others and almost lose myself to how inferior I feel." Their schoolmates pit them against each other - Kakeru explicitly asking Yuki whether Yuki’s simply accepting defeat in a competition to win Tohru’s affections, and saying that Kyo looks happier. The classic story tropes pits them against each other - we were led on by Takaya to believe that the main trio will develop into a typical love triangle. The narrative of Kyo and Yuki competing for Tohru’s is questioned by Yuki and then wholly subverted when Yuki reveals his true feelings towards Tohru.
Fruits Basket’s love triangle subversion tells us very clearly that comparing people’s worth and happiness is toxic and destructive. When Kakeru suggested that Kyo seems happier because he seems to be winning a love competition between Yuki and Kyo, Yuki angrily asks “does it make you happy? Putting happiness on a scale and comparing people, and deciding their relative merits, is it fun to judge these things?” Kakeru apologizes and readily admits that his questions were asked without emphasizing with other people's perspectives. He doesn’t know anything about Yuki and Kyo’s relationships with Tohru, much less about Yuki and Kyo’s relative happiness. Like Kakeru, we the readers expect a love competition only to discover that both boys have beautiful intimate relationships with Tohru. The relationships are different types, one romantic and the other familial/platonic, but neither of them are deemed to be more significant than the other by the story.
This post got so long because I see fans failing to grasp the hypocrisy against the story’s message. I see people saying that Yuki deserved to be with Tohru because he was nicer to her at the beginning. Yuki is a better human than Kyo because he’s nice to everyone. Kyo’s had it worse because he has to contend with a monstrous form. Yuki’s had it worse because his childhood was lonelier. In other words, who’s more deserving? Who should we root for? In comparing Yuki and Kyo like this, we’re acting out all the toxic messages that the story is warning us against.
Don’t judge and compare other people’s happiness and merits. Life is not a competition. It’s okay to progress at your pace, when you are ready. The same message by extension applies to Yuki and Kyo’s past traumas as well. They both had traumatic upbringings and formed their own coping mechanisms in response. Neither of them are better human beings than the other. Neither of them are somehow more “worthy” of Tohru’s love than the other. Both Yuki and Kyo had never felt accepted for who they were until Tohru. Since Yuki’s the first one to start healing from his trauma, he grows enough to recognize that he was wrong to envy Kyo. Yuki’s not better for healing earlier than Kyo, their character progressions make perfect sense given their personal circumstances.
We’ve all been taught the destructive mindset of comparing people against each other. It comes to us easily because it’s entrenched in our society, just like how it’s entrenched in the Sohma clan. I want us Fruits Basket fans to be more self-aware about this toxic system of thinking, because the story wants us to be better.
𝐌𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝟐𝟑
Tumblr media Tumblr media
𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐈𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐧 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐝
𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭: 𝟐𝟒𝟗𝟒
𝐌𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝟐𝟑:
You released a cute sneeze before clearing your nose with a tissue. Although you spent the entire day with Yuki yesterday, you were still feeling a bit sick. Hopefully, you didn't actually give him your sickness either. You both returned to school and were able to finish your committee and homework papers at your house, but you still had to return back to work. Shimada suggested that you rest for another day since you're merely a high school student, she never struck you as the type of person to worry about your health. You decided that it would still be better to return to work though.
You squeezed some hand sanitizer on your skin as the next customer came through the door. Your eyes widened as you recognized Akito's figure, he pulled parts of his hair back as he approached the counter. He was still wearing extremely bland clothes, something that you noticed was a common feature about him.
"A-Akito-san, I didn't know you knew about this cafe. . ." You stared at him in shock as you shifted your weight from side to side. This was a very awkward encounter, especially when you haven't seen him in your routine ever since he visited the school. It was almost as if he was trying to distance himself from you.
You didn't know how you felt about Akito during school, you still felt a bit unsure of what to say to him. You were too caught up in your own world that you failed to realize you hadn't interacted with the dark-haired male at all. You were conflicted about whether or not you should ask him about his relationship with Yuki. You didn't exactly want to be on bad terms with him, especially when he did so much for you at the start of your meeting.
". . . Hm, a close friend of mine suggested this place to me." He smiled, pointing at one of the drinks on the menu, "I'll have (f/b) with not too much sugar in it."
"O-Oh, of course. Would you like to have that to go or are you drinking there?" You asked, holding up a marker if he were to order his drink to go. You learned from Shimada that there were customers who wanted their names written on their cups when they order to go so they wouldn't get mix up drinks.
"I'll be drinking here, thank you." You nodded to his order and handed the order to the kitchen window. You grabbed the wooden tray and walked around the counter.
"Then, follow me this way." Akito smiled behind your figure, admiring your work uniform and the way your apron fitted your body. It was much more attractive than the clothes he was forced to wear at home.
You opened your hand to gesture at an open table with an empty seat in front, "we don't exactly have single-person seats, I hope this is fine with you Akito-san."
He only shook his head and waved his hand to dismiss your comment, "I'm not exactly going to be alone, I was hoping you would sit with me."
You pondered over the professionalism of your job, this was most likely the second time you were invited out during your shift. Although you thought it would be rude behavior for you to simply enjoy a break with someone else, it seems as if Shimada was pushing for you to open up to other people. This wasn't very professional, but you couldn't deny a customer's wishes. You sighed under your breath, holding onto the wooden tray close to your chest as Akito sat down on the seat.
'Just for a few minutes,' You thought, pulling the other chair for you to sit down in front of him. He leaned his chin against the palm of his hand as he continued to smile at you.
"How has Yuki been doing in school?" He asked, fiddling with one of the sugar packets that were provided in the container on the side of the table.
"E-Erm. . . He's doing fine." You didn't know if you were supposed to mention the fact that the two of you skipped out yesterday in order to stay home. After all, this was Akito, the head of the Sohma family, you were sure that he wouldn't take Yuki's absence of school too lightly considering the fact that he was supposed to be a model student.
"That's nice to hear, how about you? Have you been doing?" Akito spun around the packet of sugar around his fingers, feeling the material of the thin paper rub against his skin.
"I've made a new friend," You said, smiling down as you held onto the tray, "we watched a Mogeta movie together."
You thought that this might have been the safest information to talk about that wasn't too far away from the truth. You didn't want to involve Yuki in your conversations with Akito, especially after the events that happened that are still fresh in your mind. It might be dangerous for the two of them to meet again, you decided that the best course of action is to interact with the two of them separately. Although they came from the same family, you believe that Yuki only visits Akito during New Years'. It was merely a hunch, but you wanted to believe in something.
Akito crushed the sugar packet in his hands but retained his smiling face. 'Who the hell is the other bitch?' He cursed, feeling his anger boil within him like a teakettle but he quickly turned off the stove to his frustrations. To say that he was annoyed was an understatement, he was furious inside at the fact that you would watch a movie with someone else that wasn't him, to smile as if you had just found a better friend, not to mention you watched a Mogeta movie with them. The same movie that he went with you on your first date. This new friend of yours may have sparked a flame within Akito that he didn't previously know he had.
You heard the bell of the counter ring and you quickly excused yourself to pick up Akito's drink. As you turned around to place the drinks onto your wooden tray, Akito's smile dropped to a frown. It was frustrating to him that there was someone else who was trying to meddle in his relationship with you, especially when he went out of his way to try and interact with you. He should look more into your schedule in order to find out who is trying too hard to get close to you. Akito would be extremely angry at the thought of someone else seducing you. Perhaps it was the troubles of being God to mere animals that made his life harder when it came to talking to you.
You were much different compared to everyone else. You held resentment towards those who have wronged you, you hate them more than anything. There was the feeling of your inner walls being scratched against, something hidden underneath you that you desperately wanted to erase. You knew what it felt having a mother like his.
It was painful and frustrating.
But. . . He wasn't going to lose sight of you that easily.
He watched as you returned with his drink, placing it down in front of him and bowing down in politeness. This gesture of respect made his heart swell and his ego burst, there was something about this small action that made him feel much better on the inside. You quietly sat back down onto your seat, awkwardly fiddling with the apron of your work uniform. Akito's smile returned, he lifted up the cup to his lips, admiring the smell of the (f/b) that was supposedly your favorite.
He wonders if you have gotten closer to Yuki. He heard from Shigure that he has been staying at your house more often. Although he knew Shigure was starting to develop a bit of a grudge against you for your existence to Akito, he knew better than to go against the head of the Sohma family wishes. He stared at your phone that was slightly poking out from your pocket, the eagle charm dangling in the air as if it was mid-flight.
It might be easier to convince you to stay by his side if it meant putting Yuki on the line. For you, to see everyone's smile was something you were trying to accomplish. You wanted to see them all smile, especially the lonely, timid, sobbing Rat that was crumbling underneath the expectations of others.
You would break if it meant he’ll smile.
That was what he was hoping for. You’d be a timid bird locked away for his own enjoyment to see and talk to.
As he took a sip of the drink, you peered up to look at him, "Akito-san. . . I wanted to ask you a question."
He set down the teacup back onto the saucer, raising his eyebrow in interest, "and what question would you like to ask me?"
"I wanted to know why you would go out of your way to meet me like this," Akito stared at you in silence, coaxing you to continue, ". . . I'm just thinking that you must be busy with your own duties."
"You are my precious friend, (L/n)-san." He leaned forward, intertwining his hands and placing his chin on his knuckles, "I like talking to you of course. I may not be able to fulfill the role of a friend to you due to my busy schedule, but I would love to meet up with you more often."
"I see. . . What exactly do you even see in me?" You asked, watching as Akito's smile continued to widen.
". . . I see myself in you," Akito slipped his finger through the handle of the cup, swirling the drink slightly, "we're similar (L/n)-san."
"In what way. . . ?" You felt your hand clench into a fist underneath the table, "we only met a couple of times."
"I know you've been holding yourself back," Your eyes widened as your blood felt cold, "you think that everyone else wouldn't understand the real you."
That isn't true, it couldn't be.
"You're a lot better than everyone else aren't you? You're much stronger than everyone else in terms of raw ability, and yet you don't show it at all. Are you holding back? You don't need to hide those urges you feel inside," Akito continued, your body froze still in your chair as you were forced to continue listening to him, "because it's normal isn't it? You'll feel a lot better if you let it all out."
". . . What are you talking about?"
"Isn't it obvious? You hate your own family. . . You want to hurt them, don't you? You want to see them suffer just as much as you did.” He concluded, his words stabbing into your heart with every single syllable that comes out, "you're scared that your hatred would spread amongst others, right?"
You instinctively raised your hand, your irritation of the situation getting to your head, as you almost brought it towards his face but froze midway. Yuki seemed to have flinched as he saw your hand but you dropped it to your side, lifeless. The dullness and emotionless look of your eyes were shown through the dimly lit corner.
'I. . . Don’t want this.’ You thought, your spine getting shivers as your memories began to flood back into you like a tidal wave. You felt as if you were drowning in this situation, the lack of oxygen and weight of your world on your shoulders crushing you into nothingness.
"I understand how you feel (L/n)-san. You feel so angry on the inside, but you’re bottling it all up. But don’t worry, everyone else is mere comfort. We are the same after all, but you're special." Akito smiled, drinking at his tea while you stared back at him in shock, "you must really care for everyone else, my precious Eagle."
'Stop.' You internally screamed. This isn't what you want. You tightened your fists, your nerves, and fingers growing numb at the pressure. Your nails digging into your skin and piercing through the surface while you trembled. You felt no tears pricking at the corners of your eyes, your body feeling as if it had been dunked under freezing cold waters, numb and cold to the touch as Akito stared at you with peaked interests.
If this isn't what you want. . . Then why do you feel so scared right now?
You slammed your hands on the table, stopping him from continuing any further, the saucer for the bottom of his cup bouncing at the impact, ". . . That's. . . That's not true. I'm not better than anyone else. . ."
"Why are you denying it?" He asked, nearly finished with his drink, "the more you bottle up all this anger. . . You know that it'll explode in the worst possible way."
"But. . . I won't let you go down that path." Akito stood up from his chair, staring down at your quivering form that was frozen at the table, horrified at how easily he was able to read through you, "if you ever need someone for your anger, I will always be there to provide you with what you need."
He needed to push you to the very edge if it means he could see your pitiful expression.
". . . What are you providing. . . ?" You asked fearfully, trying to comprehend the situation thrown in front of you like cold water. Akito walked closer to you, reaching out to hold onto your cheek delicately as he leaned forward into your ear.
"Toys." He slid his hand down and away from your skin, leaving the cafe without a single goodbye. You were unsure if you ever wanted to hear him say it either, you didn't know if you wanted to hear more of his voice.
At the table, he left a large sum of money which was worth more than he paid for. There was a slightly crumpled white sheet of paper within the stack. You picked up the cash and held it in your hand, pulling out the white slip that was underneath the dollars and unfolding it.
'Do not be afraid to ask me for anything you need to release your anger' written specifically by Akito based on his name on the bottom corner of the paper, the black ink bleeding into the parchment as your finger smudged against it. The ink staining your finger with darkness, your (s/c) skin contrasting the sinister color.
You wanted to disappear.
Fruits Baskets Final Season Episodes 2 & 3
What? No, I didn’t watch these on the Fridays of the weeks they came out. No, I wasn’t dying from school---
Anyway, back to the grind.
Episode 2
Tumblr media
I swear the gif search function HATES me and what I’m trying to do---
Anyway.
I would like to make this very clear. Shigure is a little bit evil. A little bit. But it’s mostly from being twisted by the zodiac curse and his strange form of love. So if you wanted to punch him this episode, that’s good. He needs to be punched. A lot. Like a lot. God, he’s so evil. Moving on.
So the episode begins with young Akito asking Shigure if he loves her. This is, as we’ve seen, something that Akito fixates on, mostly due to her father accidentally warping her with the idea of being eternally loved by the zodiac members. He responds with a very earnest love confession that sort of explains why they spend so much time together, but it also confuses things a bit, at least at first. What with the zodiac spirit, it’s unclear how much of Shigure’s love is real and how much isn’t up to him. That may factor in to whatever the hell is up with him now.
Cut to Tohru working on graduation ceremony flowers and nearly asking Shigure about breaking the curse. Of course, she can’t, because it’s hard to bring up, and she’s only seen 2 sides of Shigure at most. Naturally, he already knows what she’s thinking about, because he’s Shigure. He’s just that good.
Tohru continues to struggle even at school, when she realizes that there’s so much she knows that she probably can’t talk about with Momiji or Haru or anyone else. And since the curse is this ever-present thing to them, she’s not even sure if they’ll believe her or how they’ll react. Rin is the exception to this, of course, since she was already looking for information on it.
There are some shenanigans with the Prince Yuki Fan Club, and Tohru and Kyo are left alone (probably on purpose) by Hanajima, Uotani, and company. But I’ll get back to that in a sec.
Yuki tries to help out other classes with things, but they won’t let him because... well, uh, they think he’s too busy... and he... isn’t... I’m sorry, that’s just so funny to me. So anyway, he runs into Machi, who is being all adorable and stubborn because she wanted to say hello and chased him all over the school to do so. It’s cute, because Yuki’s not used to that much effort being put in to something for his sake. I love Machi like that UwU
Back to Tohru and Kyo, they’ve been waiting for HOURS. Tohru decides to tentatively try out her Kureno talking point, but as soon as she brings up the curse maybe being broken, Kyo tells her that hypotheticals like that are pointless (this is implied paraphrase). He does this mostly because he’s in that pit of despair of “I’m never getting out of this” but also because he doesn’t want to give himself a false hope that might never come true. Tohru, however, becomes sad, because of course she wants to save him from having to be locked away like the previous Cat. So there’s a bit of moment where she’s about to cry.
And then Kyo *sniffle* gives her a flower to make her feel better. *sobs*
Technically speaking, this scene should’ve been in the last season or SOMETHING, I honestly thought they WEREN’T going to put my FAVORITE scene in the anime, and then they did. What’s cute about this scene is how torn up Kyo is from hurting Tohru’s feelings, and how almost desperate he is to make her feel better. It’s a sweet moment, if slightly awkwardly animated, but it’s a rare Tohru and Kyo moment where they don’t even say anything and you can SEE everything they want to say. Of course, they’re interrupted, because they always are (HAVE YOU NOTICED THAT LIKE NEVER HAPPENS WHENEVER YUKI AND TOHRU HAVE A MOMENT?), but hey, I got my fluff, I am fed.
There’s brief mention of Rin and how Tohru hasn’t seen her lately, and I hate it because I know where she is.
Anyway, now on to Shigure being Shigure.
He’s torturing his poor editor again, and he walks away from what appears to have been a heated conversation with... HIS PARENTS. THEY EXIST. I dunno what it is with rarely seeing zodiac parents (besides the obvious cases of Kyo and Momiji), but there you have it. We see then that there’s a big Sohma dinner outing with Akito there, so clearly Shigure planned that. His skills of perception and foresight are serious scary, and I really wonder how the hell he developed them.
There’s a flashback to before Tohru and Kureno’s revealing conversation, and we see that Shigure hates Kureno for being so close to Akito. Of course, Kureno makes it clear that Akito doesn’t love him, that she’s always wanted.... well, he doesn’t say, but I think all of us are familiar enough with how this anime works that we know who he means. But Kureno basically wants Shigure to stop being so cold to Akito, and this is because of how much he wants to keep her happy more than any personal feelings about Shigure.
This is where it gets a bit dicey. I’ve actually got a strange fondness for this scene, if only because it sort of but also not really gets to the heart of why Shigure is the way he is.
Shigure appears in Akito’s room, and she’s basically jealous that he was out with another woman. Then she brings up his sexual relationship with his editor (nonexistent), which is rather petty, but then, when was this duo not about pettiness? The implication Akito makes is that he sleeps with every woman he meets (explains a lot). She then mentions that Shigure slept with Ren, Akito’s mother (I’m not going to touch on how screwed up that is), which is why he’s living in a house away from the main estate. Shigure acts all cool and says that was a long time ago, he’s been punished, but Akito points out that he almost wanted to leave. Which... he did, but not for any lack of love on his part. And he says that. He recalls the conversation we see at the beginning, in which he tells her he cares about her more than anyone else. Understandably, she’s frustrated, and she asks why he always tests her.
It’s because she slept with Kureno. Petty, I know.
The phone conversation comes back. Everything you need to understand about Shigure is in one sentence: “I love her so much that sometimes I want to spoil her rotten, and sometimes I want to crush her into a pulp.” This is nearly verbatim of the manga translation I read a long time ago, and it’s always stuck with me. The thing is, Akito was always told she’s special and she can do with the zodiac as she pleases (which she says directly in this episode). It seems a part of Shigure didn’t like that that extended to those that weren’t him (Kureno), and his love for her warped and twisted into this kinda toxic relationship. (Kinda, she says, as if it’s not very.) This makes him want to be kind to her, but at the same time, he wants to be mean to her and show her how much pain she’s put him through, too. It’s pettiness at its extreme, but it’s somehow more believable than other forms of petty jealousy I’ve seen.
Oh yeah, and then they have sex.
Once again, there’s brief mention of Rin, perhaps she’s in the hospital, we don’t really know. But the main part of this all is Shigure remembering that before Akito was born/in his life, he had always been sort of waiting for her, which is mostly the zodiac spirit talking but is also interesting nonetheless. How much of Shigure’s love is influenced by the zodiac curse? How much of it is him? I don’t know if we ever find that out, because frankly, the curse did a lot of things to everyone involved, including him.
I still love Shigure, don’t get me wrong, but this is SUCH an interesting episode.
Episode 3
Tumblr media
Precisely the gif I wanted. Hehehe.
IT’S A MACHI EPISODE! AND I LOVE HER, SO THAT’S ALRIGHT!
Still pissed about Kyo’s screentime being so awful lately. ads;fkjsad;fklsda
Some student council shenangians occur as always, and it’s revealed that Nao has a crush on someone, which is why he declared Yuki to be his rival on day one. Also, Kimi is a golddigger.
Some girls come in and gossip about Machi making a mess again with one of her outbursts, and they mention a rumor about her trying to kill her brother, which is why she lives alone. Kakeru looks quite displeased to hear this, and Machi walks in on the conversation and runs away, with Yuki wanting to go after her.
Kakeru tells Yuki later that the rumor is “mostly true”--that is, that’s the story he’s been told as well. Of course, he’s wary to believe it, because while they’re not terribly close, he knows her a little better than the parents do. He then tells a story of seeing Machi making footprints in the snow, almost obsessively, and he’s not quite sure why she did it (but Kakeru has a Shigure streak, so I wonder if maybe he does know?).
So Kakeru decides to pull a sort of jerk move and visit Machi while with Yuki, and she tries to turn them away to no avail. Of course, Yuki isn’t put off by the mess, since he and Shigure used to live that way, so he’s all cheerful about it while Machi is dying in the corner. I will not talk much about the bra incident, but that was honestly the most hilarious few seconds.
Finally left alone, Machi asks why Yuki is there, assuming it’s about the rumor her classmates mentioned. She says she’s done trying to correct everybody, since no one ever seems to believe her anyway. (That is all too relatable, especially in high school.)
But Yuki doesn’t even mind. He asks something else instead: does she hate perfection? And she says yes. TEN POINTS TO GRYFFINDOR.
Wait. My bad.
Anyway, Machi has a flashback to what I believe I’ve mentioned before, which is Machi’s mom forcing her to be perfect so that she could beat Kakeru in the succession war (England?) with her family. When that was called off, her mother would say right in front of her face (jerk) that Machi was boring. Machi asked her why she would say that when she was just trying to do what she was told. Her mother has the gall to be offended by the implication that it’s her fault (IT IS, YOU IDIOT--) and then turns around and says maybe she raised Machi wrong.
Here’s a hint: that’s not what you say to your CHILD.
Poor Machi didn’t know what to do with herself. What is she supposed to do if she’s just a “mistake” her mother made?
Yuki, in his cute way of knowing precisely what she means, tells her she’s worked hard to get where she is, and that he’s glad she’s here. She’s not used to compliments like that, and it’s a very sweet moment. That’s when she admits that she was just trying to take care of her brother, but her parents wrongly and automatically assumed she was jealous and trying to kill him (which says a lot about how god awful they are). And she’s finally able to let it out and cry with Yuki, who offers to go leave footprints in the snow with her.
My heart might’ve burst during that, not gonna lie--
I think my favorite part of the episode is the next day, during a student council meeting. A new, perfect box of chalk is placed in front of Machi, and you can see in her eyes that the perfection is about to make her snap. Yuki, knowing this, calmly reaches over and breaks a piece of chalk, ruining the “perfection” of it. It’s very sweet of him and a very cute moment for both.
Then we cut to Tohru handing Kyo a flower, which is whiplash to the previous episode I’m glad we got.
The next sequence was a bit confusing at first, as I thought we’d sort of covered this already in season one, but we get to see Motoko. She’s called Yuki out in order to tell him that he made her high school days happier, and that she truly loved him. Motoko also hopes that Yuki himself will find happiness, which I think is a nod at her recognizing Tohru’s influence on him. It’s kind of cute, because even Yuki seems to appreciate her words, and we get to cut to a nice graduation song that actually kind of made me cry.
Motoko is still in a classroom when someone finds her. It’s Nao, and it appears that she was the girl he was in love with, which I LOVE. I HOPE HE OR SHE OR THEY ARE HAPPY TOGETHER OR EVEN APART, JUST THAT HE EVENTUALLY GOT TO TELL HER OR SOMETHING AND AHHHHHH. He tells her that goodbye is not the end, and it always leads to “nice to meet you,” which is sweet for both of them, considering her graduation and his being left behind.
Then we get to meet Hiro’s baby sister, Hinata, a true cutie pie. I think I cried here, too, for different reasons.
Finally, we see Kagura having picked up Rin’s diploma (YAY SHE GRADUATED YAYYYY), and wondering where she is despite her mother’s warnings not to investigate. Hatori and Shigure are a bit suspicious, too, and we see Akito with a pair of scissors.... OwO
[I know what happened and I hate it.]
I’m glad I could finally do these, it’s been a couple of weeks of hell, to be honest. Hopefully, Fruits Basket will be back at it again and I’ll have something more to wax poetic about, haha. Thanks for reading!
furuba parents ranked best-worst?
mr and mrs hanajima - hands down best parents in fruits basket, which i think is on purpose. instead of rejecting hana for her differences, they actively accommodate her, don’t force her into situations that make her uncomfortable, love and support her, and embrace and celebrate her with all her quirks. this is in direct contrast to the zodiac parents, who are in general disgusted by their children and force them into situations they don’t want to be in because it’s convenient or beneficial for them. i always think of that little scene bw hana and her grandma where her grandma suggest she paints her nails black since she doesn’t have a black school uniform and i think that is just the epitome of love and understanding and acceptance. go hanajima fam!!!
kazuma - dilf, excellent man, he loves kyo so much, i would die for him. a really really REALLY GOOD DAD. genuinely think there would have been dire consequences if kazuma hadn’t taken kyo in and shown him the love and acceptance that kyo deserves
satsuki - QUEEN what more is there to say, she’s the freaking best. she said hell ya i love sheep and i love my bitchy little son and hats off to that
kyoko - i feel bad putting her so low because i very much view kyoko as a victim of circumstance and the actions of a young person trying their best with what they have, but she did still neglect tohru for a while and she also expected tohru to act like an adult from a very young age. otherwise kyoko is an amazing, supportive mother who showed tohru love in every way she possibly could. all around she is a very good mother with a few flaws that are a direct result of katsuya’s actions
kagura’s mom - we don’t know much about her. seems like she has a pretty normal relationship with kagura, sort of reminds me of my relationship w my mom. she can stay
ritu’s mom - i do not remember her name. gave ritsu a complex over being a zodiac but is an ally who supports her trans daughter so she can stay too
uo’s dad - seems neglectful and lost but i appreciate that now that uo is older that he’s making an effort to rectify things with her
kisa’s mom - she is on thin fucking ice but at least she’s TRYING i GUESS. i dont like the way she talks to kisa, telling her she’s at the end of her rope when kisa is clearly going through something but at least she’s Making An Attempt which is more than you can say for a lot of the sohma parents
momiji’s parents - momiji’s mother is clearly suffering from years-long untreated post-partum depression that turned into regular degular depression. i am mad at her for choosing to get her memories wiped regardless of that though because you’re still responsible for your actions even if you’re depressed and there are other ways to go about treating suicidal tendencies. momiij’s dad can suck my dick, he sucks but i do think he thought he was doing the right thing
ren - what a crazy lady. terribly abusive and one of the prime reasons akito is Like That. very narcissistic and convinced a literal baby is a romantic rival. bad bad mom
i don’t want to rank the bottom three because i don’t want to compare in that way, i think that yuki, kyo, and rin all had equally horrible parents in different ways. yuki is a victim of severe neglect and rin is a victim of verbal and physical abuse. kyo’s situation is a little more complicated; i think biodad was probably verbally abusive towards kyo and definitely verbally and maybe physically abusive towards mom. to her credit i think mom was trying but didn’t go about it in the right way and had no support from anyone, and i also think she was aware that kyo would view her suicide as punishment but did it anyway. i don’t want to say one situation is worse than the other because there’s no way to really quantify it, but these are definitely the bottom three
Fruits Basket - Vol 17
I am,,, confused. Thoroughly. Did I read this too fast? Am I misunderstanding? This book felt like a series of "What? Huh? What? Huh? What? Whuhh?? Huhhhhh?????" and I am kinda bewildered.
Tumblr media
So let's talk about it,,, somehow.
It starts with Shigure and Hatori talking about Akito's meltdown at New Year's, and how apparently Shigure tried to comfort Akito, but Akito was having none of it. The topic of Kureno came up, and how he just seems off, disconnected, in a sense, and also how Akito seems to have chosen Kureno above all the other Juunishi.
Panning over to Kureno, in the previous book Momiji gave him the CD of the play, "Sorta Cinderella". He seemed pretty affected by the things that Uotani said, but they also reminded him of moments with Akito, when he was younger. He calls Shigure later, asking for Tohru, which Shigure finds odd. What business would the two of them have? But it turns out that later, Tohru does run into Kureno, on her way to the store. She was squatting next to a bunch of birds, and when he showed up, they flew away. This is important at all, because that isn't what usually happens to the animals that the Juunishi share a spirit with (agh how to phrase things), in fact it's the opposite. Tohru asks Kureno about this, and then he solidifies any questions by hugging her and,,,, nothing happens. Somehow, he isn't affected by the curse. It has no hold on him, he won't turn into a bird (I suppose a rooster, specifically, which is kinda sad bc I was looking forward to that, in a little way. It'd be funny, if nothing else) if he gets really weak or sick, or if he hugs someone of the opposite sex.
Tohru asks him how this happened, and when, but Kureno doesn't really know. It happened randomly one day, a while back, but he has no idea was triggered it. It's just that, one day, he was vibin, doing his thing, and it just happened. No one else in the family knows, he's just been pretending that he's still a Juunishi. Kureno also said that he can't be with Uotani, that the CD was a wasted attempt, because he's promised to be with and take care of another person, that person being Akito. Kureno makes it clear, though, that he still does care for Uotani, but he just can't be with her. This whole time, it's been switching between the current interaction between Kureno and Tohru, and flashing back to when Kureno first realized that the curse broke for him, and Akito was just fucking losing his mind, screaming and shit. He begged for Kureno to stay, regardless of the curse (btw, at this point, Kureno's a teenager, and Akito's still a little kid, so it was a little while ago), and Kureno said that he would promise to stay with Akito, stay by his side, pretend that he's still a Juunishi, etc.
And then, at the end of the chapter, something is revealed: apparently Akito's a girl. To be honest, I'm not really sure what to do with this information. As far as I can remember, it doesn't really have much to do with anything. Why has he (she? fuck. I have no idea.) been presenting as a boy this whole time? Because his mom forced him, since he was born. Why did she do that? I don't know, it didn't say in this book. Hopefully it fucking clarifies later on, because I'm just getting vibes from that one Insidious movie, with that ghost/demon person. Wasn't that their deal? Something like that. Reversed, but something like that. Idk, I was too busy being scared shitless to think about the intricacies of the plot.
Anyway, so Akito's apparently a girl, but has been raised as a boy. Four of the Juunishi know this: Shigure, Hatori, Ayame, and Kureno, because they were all kids when Akito was born. Apparently, when Akito's mom (her name is Ren) was pregnant with Akito, they all came to her and were crying and shit, acting super weird. Like, they all just knew that Akito would be the God.
As a fun side note, Ren and Akito fucking hate each other. Just,, so much. Is there a person in the Sohma family that doesn't have familial issues, because it just seems like there are a lot of people who do. I think maybe Kagura doesn't? I haven't seen anything saying she has issues. Nothing much has been said about Shigure's, Hatori's, or Kureno's families, so maybe they're okay? I dunno, but one of the things that specifically shows up between Ren and Akito, is that Ren does not believe in the "bond" that Akito and the rest of the Juunishi have, saying that it's a fake love, that, if given the choice, the Juunishi would not behave or treat Akito the way they do, which is kinda true. From what I read about when Yuki first met Akito, there were a lot of conflicting feelings, ranging from "I hate you but also I never want to be away from you" to "This is hell on earth just being near this person but also to be away from this person is agony", and like, whoa. That's a lot. I doubt it's like that at all anymore, but there has been some mentions that Akito does have some higher hold on the Juunishi than other people do.
All this said and done, I still want to know more. I am heavily curious. I'd like to know more about Akito's whole situation. I'm glad he's not just a one-dimensional "bad guy", but dang, some of this stuff, it just feels like it's coming out of left field. (Is that a baseball thing? That sounds like a baseball thing. Idioms are weird.)
By the time that Kureno leaves, Tohru's a wreck. She's crying, and confused, and just,,, yikes. (I kinda was too, but just the confused part.) And so who comes to the rescue than Hanajima, and also Hanajima, but the small one. (I realized recently that most of these people are referred to by their first names, except for like, Uotani and Hanajima, which makes sense. A massive swath of these characters would all be "Sohma". It'd be confusing as fuck. But still. Idk) Hanajima felt Tohru's sheer confusion and despair, and Megumi tagged along because why not, y'know?
Hanajima decided that Tohru would stay with her for the night, so that she and Tohru and Uotani could all talk stuff out about what Tohru was upset about. Unfortunately for Shigure, Yuki and possibly Kyo? I don't think he was home at the time but maybe??, that meant that Tohru wasn't making dinner. So Yuki potentially gave Shigure and himself food poisoning, but hey, it's better than takeout, right? (Seriously, Tohru's back must be tired from cooking, cleaning, doing the laundry, and dealing with everyone's emotional baggage, she's doing so much. And she still has her own personal shit that she does, like,,, how hasn't she lost her shit yet??)
Tohru says that Kureno was kind, in that he was looking out for other people's feelings and wellfare before his own, and Hanajima says that she (Tohru) does the same thing (which is what Uotani first saw in Kureno, and why she thought that he was like Tohru), but Hanajima worries that the more that Tohru does that, the more that she carries the worries and troubles of other people, it could end up hurting her. (We love a caring friend that cares) In the end, Uotani tells Tohru that it's okay, that she cares more about the relationships she has now than whatever she might have had with Kureno, which was nice.
Moving onwards, the school is making preparations for graduation! I don't think Tohru and Co. are graduating quite yet (maybe they are idk), but there are these paper flowers that they're making, and for some reason, shenanigans ensue. Like, a group of girls just nabbing a bunch of flowers that Kyo made?? Why? That's really weird of you to do. Stop that. (They were tracked down and forced to make up for all the flowers they stole, because for some reason they wouldn't give back the flowers they stole.) It's kinda weird, I forgot that Kyo is also kinda popular with girls, because usually we only hear from the girls that fawn over Yuki. But yeah, that's a thing for Kyo, as well. Weird, either way.
Now we are at the last chunk of the book, hooray! This isn't as long as the previous one 😬. So, Shigure and Akito got something weird going on. I'm not really sure what to think of it, honestly. Apparently Shigure slept with Ren, and Akito kicked him out of the main house as a punishment, which Shigure did not fight back at all. (wow that was not a large section at all i totally didn't just lose steam and stop right there at all nope not me i don't do that not at all)
I'll admit that part of me is still kinda,, squeamish? I guess? about people in the Sohma household being in relationships, it's just that they all have "Sohma", that is probably messing me up. Idk. It's definitely not a healthy relationship. All kinds of weird tensions and miscommunication abound. It's not a good time.
furuba but it’s kimi instead of tohru :))
- so those of you who have read my one furuba fic (hey read my furuba fic) know that i kinda have some hcs for kimi’s family life? summarized: bio mom left when she was a kid bc her dad was cheating; she has a step mom, dad still cheats and the step mom knows about it but is okay with it as long as the dad tells her she’s his favorite; step mom and kimi have this passive aggressive relationship where they’re both trying to prove they’re the dad’s favorite, meanwhile dad’s a gaslighting piece of crap. anyway in this au, step mom and kimi get into a fight and step mom tries to kick her out, which only works bc kimi got fed up and decided to leave anyway (dad wasn’t around at the time, or he would’ve tried to calm things down prolly). kimi stubbornly ends up living in a tent bc she’s way too proud to ask anyone for help (and she doesn’t have many friends), shigure and yuki find her, etc etc etc
- tohru DOES exist, but her grandfather’s health issues aren’t as severe, so she stays living with him in ignorance of the sohma family curse. the whole drama w kyo and kyoko and everything still happened with her, and the kyoru is like kind of a side story happening in the background (with some shenanigans about whether or not tohru found out about the curse somehow maybe) but it’s KIMI TIME in this au
- i feel like it’s really important to mention that kimi’s first instinct, when shigure yuki and kyo turned into animals in front of her for the first time, was to whip out her phone and vague tweet ‘sohma yuki is a RAT!!!!’ she gets sworn to secrecy by the sohmas right after, but the talk of the school the next day is ‘what the hell did the prince do to get called out by kimi???’ she gets ‘harassed’ by the prince yuki club about ‘besmirching the prince’s good name,’ which obviously turns into kimi harassing the prince yuki club right back (i imagine she plays the whole thing off as a ‘lovers’ momentary spat,’ from which they ‘worked out and made up very quickly and enthusiastically o3-’)
- kimi still isn’t in yuki and kyo’s class! she’s also much, MUCH more difficult for either of them to deal with, and weirdly, yuki and kyo sort of.... end up spending a lot more time together than they do in canon? they kind of come to a truce of ‘kimi and shigure are way too difficult to deal with,’ at least at home, and they don’t have a tohru buffer to lean on this time. kimi has like. next to no interest in yuki or kyo, so honestly their relationships dont develop that much. HOWEVER, when she meets kagura and the prince yuki club (and any time she interacts with them), she tends to hang ALL OVER kyo or yuki with the specific intent of pissing off the girls, because she really likes to start shit like that
- kimi’s a business oriented girl. she wants SHIGURE to be her SUGAR DADDY. shigure joked along with her flirting at first, but quickly realized that she might actually be serious, so now he’s kind of afraid of her??? in that, he avoids being caught alone in a room with her and will occasionally beg kyo or yuki to help him (they never do--shigure deserves the harassment).
- kyo and yuki don’t have a big three dynamic with kimi the way they do in canon with tohru. you know who are the other two to kimi’s big three??? MOMIJI AND HARU. momiji is DELIGHTED by kimi, and the two of them co-conspire often in all sorts of things. they plan family trips, prank other sohmas, and gossip like NOBODIES business. kimi and haru, on the other hand, both have a certain ‘unstoppable chaotic force’ energy, and they get along quite well too. the three of them being so close helps a lot with filling in the gaps where kimi doesn’t quite fit the shoes of being a kind, loving heroine like tohru; kimi has the force of personality to point out when the sohmas and their family situations are being ridiculous, and momiji and haru are kind and loving enough to provide comfort and support to a lot of the family.
- yuki at whatever point in the story: i think... i should accept the offer to be the student council president. it’d be good for my character development and self confidence and whatever. / kimi from the next room over: YUN! omg we can spend so much more time together now! takei asked me to join the student council as a secretary JUST this morning :))
- kimi and kakeru are friends at the beginning of the story! kimi has a crush on him and he’s a) oblivious and a dick about it and b) gay (my au my rules it’s fuckin endgame yukeru in this bitch. komaki is his beard and she’s fully aware of that lahfkdsjflkdshfksdjflkds). kimi HATES that she has a crush on this wimpy eboy and and it’s a point of tension between them :)) especially once yukeru endgame starts being more and more obvious
- at the beginning of the story, kimi...... doesnt take momiji seriously as a potential romantic partner. big big part of her arc is recognizing that the tall, traditionally attractive boys arent always the best romantic options, though, and she does eventually start to fall for him :)) and THEN he grows like eight inches in a month and she starts calling him an investment lahfkdsjfksdhjfdshfksjlkfsjl
- the beach akito/kimi/momiji confrontation is CHARGED because MOMIJI is there and he’s in DANGER and kimi gets fuckin PISSED because that’s HER friend, her boy, her ONE. akito talks shit and kimi talks fuckin shit back and they get in a full on catfight. they’re screaming at each other, clawing at each other. kureno has to physically pull akito away; kimi only doesnt chase after them because momiji is hurt. this is a major moment in kimi’s slow realization of her feelings for momiji :))
- kimi and rin, once rin makes up with haru and is able to relax a little, become a seething, curse fighting TEAM. on the other hand..... the argument of ‘the curse WILL break, eventually’ ends up working on kimi, even though she feels strange about it. she cares about kyo, to an extent, but it’s a lot easier for her to give up on him than it was for tohru in canon, for obvious reasons.
- when his curse breaks, momiji has someone to tell :,))
- tohru visits shigure’s house one morning to tell kyo about her feelings. akito stabs kureno, runs to shigure’s house, and has a conversation with tohru (who she has never met before lahfdlsfjdskfjdfksl) screaming about ‘oh are you some bitch here to confess to kyo?? guess fuckin WHAT he belongs to me, to us, he’s getting locked up in the spring, fuck you’ but uhh tohru has had a lot of offscreen development and whatnot and she ends up getting thru to akki. and then she falls off a fuckin cliff lhfkdsjfkdsjflksjfdlks you know how the story goes. anyway kimi had spent the night at momiji’s house and comes back to the WEIRDEST mood layfldskdsjfieuwfjkdskhggkdasjflkdsjlkjflkds
- oh and for good measure: uo goes to college instead of following kureno, akki and shigure get couple therapy. yukeru are gay, momiji and kimi live happily ever after. the end :))
of cats and curses
Tumblr media
“I’ve only seen these cats get so excited about someone sitting outside a pet store with one other person in my entire life,” a warm and almost suffocatingly kind voice said, snapping Catra out of her thoughts. “And he had that same disgruntled expression that you do. Poor kitties try to make friends with the very people who don’t want to be made friends with.”
(Catradora meets Kyoru. As you might expect, chaos ensues.)
~*~
Catra had been more than willing to let Adora do most of the talking. She was normally more eager to learn about the new planets they were exploring, but that day… Ugh. She really wasn’t sure what was making her mood so foul. Or she couldn’t pinpoint a singular cause, anyways. It was probably some God-awful combination of the pittering drizzle of rain falling from the gray sky around her, the fact that the miserable planet ‘Earth’ she was on seemed to have no traces of magic whatsoever, and the immediate reality that Adora was no longer by her side. Which was the main downfall of Adora doing all of the talking - Catra was left behind. At her own request, of course, so she could only blame herself, but still. She wanted to stew in her misery for a bit.
This ‘Earth’ was their last stop before they’d be flying back to Bright Moon. Catra never thought she’d be relieved to be returning there, but times had changed, she supposed. During their numerous quests to restore magic to the universe, day-trips and monthly adventures alike, they’d come to learn that some planets had never had magic in the first place. Even rarer, select places did not want magic returned to their world. In other words, the Best Friend Squad - she still didn’t know how she felt about that name - had taken to asking around amongst the locals to first determine the magic status of planets before they actually began the restoration process.
So now Adora was schmoozing with the locals - probably badly, because her acting skills left much to be desired - in some place called a pet store, while Catra sat on an uncomfortable metal bench outside while silently wishing she had an umbrella. She could raise her bag above her head, but she had a feeling it wouldn’t do much. Also it had their communications pads in it, and she figured unduly exposing them to freezing rain was not a good thing.
Ugh. She should have sucked it up and gone inside with Adora.
Catra yelped as the bracelet projecting her holographic disguise suddenly shocked her, and she lifted her wrist to figure out why, exactly, it had done that. She couldn’t see anything wrong with it… Uh oh. Maybe it wasn’t waterproof. She probably should have asked Entrapta about that.
Oops. Too late?
Even more annoying than her bracelet that was now randomly spazzing out were the stupid cats in the pet store behind her that kept clamoring and scratching on the glass! Sure, she was grateful for that wall of glass because it stopped them from physically getting to her, but it was nowhere close to soundproof, meaning their yowls were barely dulled down. And most of the cats were just saying hello, but she didn’t want to turn around and acknowledge that, because she was pretty sure most people on Earth could not understand animals. She didn’t care that there was no else around - she wasn’t taking any chances. Which just meant the cats would think she was rude, but she’d rather live with that than become Earth’s resident crazy cat lady by striking up a conversation with the Siamese or the Persians in a pet store.
Huh. Could the cats see through Entrapta’s disguise? Surely not. Catra tapped her bracelet to make sure the hologram was still active, wincing as another jolt of electricity shot through her arm. Definitely still active. So maybe the cats could just… feel that she was like them. A gut instinct. Or something.
Really, there was no use thinking about it. Where the hell was Adora?
“I’ve only seen these cats get so excited about someone sitting outside a pet store with one other person, in my entire life,” a warm and almost suffocatingly kind voice said, snapping Catra out of her thoughts. “And he had that same disgruntled expression that you do. Poor kitties try to make friends with the very people who don’t want to be made friends with.”
Catra looked up to see a brown-haired girl standing in front of her, a bright smile on her face and a navy blue umbrella in her hand. She appeared way too cheerful for someone walking outside in a minor rainstorm. Catra also vaguely recognized that the language the girl was speaking was not one she understood, but Entrapta’s translator appeared to be doing the trick. Now hopefully it would continue to work in reverse.
“Ah… yeah,” she finally managed to say. “Cats… like me. Too much.”
The girl laughed. “You sound so much like Kyo!” She offered Catra her hand. “My name is Tohru. It’s lovely to meet you, Miss…?”
Catra scrambled to remember her cover name that they’d hastily made up when they learned ‘Catra’ was not a normal name on Earth. “I - uh, I’m Catrina,” she said, shaking the girl’s hand, though she remained on the bench. “It’s nice to meet you, too.”
“So what has you sitting outside in the rain?” the girl - Tohru - asked curiously, giving her a look of concern. “Are you okay? Do you need a place to stay for the night?”
Catra fought to ignore the cats still meowing behind her. Their chant had shifted to a collective FEED ME, which she obviously couldn’t do because she was not inside, but apparently they hadn’t figured that out yet. “No, I’m - I’m fine,” she stammered, wincing halfway through her sentence as Entrapta’s disguise-bracelet suddenly shocked her again. Ouch. “Just waiting for someone.”
Tohru frowned. “In the rain? Without any cover?” She immediately thrust her umbrella in Catra’s direction. “Take this, Miss Catrina. I only live about five minutes away up the road, and I feel you are in far more need of it than I.”
And now the light on Entrapta’s bracelet was flickering on and off. Ugh, that couldn’t be good. Catra did not want to accidentally give this random and kind of annoyingly nice girl a heart attack by suddenly looking… er, not like a human. “No, I’m really fine,” she insisted, jumping to her feet. “But I appreciate the offer.”
Tohru’s frown deepened. “Are you sure? I don’t want you to get hypothermia, miss.”
Catra instinctively covered her bracelet with her free hand when she noticed sparks flying off of it in her peripheral vision. “I’m sure,” she said, trying to sound as sincere as possible. “In fact, I should probably -” She cut herself off with a yelp as lightning flashed and a loud crack of thunder boomed through the air, sudden enough to make the fur on her tail stand on end as she violently reached up to cover her ears, shoulders hunching over in the process.
Apparently the sudden motion was too much for the barely-functioning bracelet to take, the bracelet that was admittedly already worse for the wear after she’d had an encounter with some kind of slime monster on a planet called Tamaran, as it snapped off her wrist before falling to the ground, now broken in half. And with that, her disguise vanished.
Catra had never bit her tongue so hard to avoid letting out a string of frustrated curses. She was pretty sure it was bleeding now.
The girl’s - no, Tohru’s, she had a name - eyes widened as she watched the series of unfortunate events unfold. “You’re… you have cat… ears? A tail?”
Dammit. Now she was going to have to hear an annoying lecture from Sparkles and probably Arrow Boy about jeopardizing the mission, though she really didn’t think this was her fault. “Uh…” Catra said, frantically trying to come up with an excuse, “would you believe me if I told you this was an elaborate costu-”
“Are you cursed, too?” Tohru interrupted, kneeling down to pick up the pieces of the bracelet from the ground. “I mean, your transformation is not quite like the Sohma’s, but I suppose it would be rash of me to presume the zodiac curse is the only one to exist in the world, wouldn’t it? Perhaps there is something else -”
Catra sneezed, accidentally cutting her off. Which she mildly regretted, because she had no freaking clue what the girl was going on about. A curse? So-ma? The hell was going on with this planet?
And most importantly, where on Earth was Adora?
“Oh my goodness, you’re freezing!” Tohru exclaimed, horrified, as she stood up. “I am so sorry, I was being incredibly inconsiderate! You poor thing, you’re not even dressed for rainy weather!”
Now that she mentioned it, Catra realized that she was shivering. Ugh. Stupid fur. It was so hard to warm up after it got wet.
“Let’s go to Shigure’s house,” Tohru said, taking Catra’s hand and pulling her away towards a dirt path, doing her best to hold her umbrella over the both of them. “We can warm you up, get you a towel and a change of clothes, and I’ll do my best to help you repair your bracelet, though it’s not similar to Kyo’s at all so I don’t know if I’ll be much use. While we do that you can explain the details of your curse to me! But only if you’re okay with talking about it, of course.” She shook her head, a mixture of shock and curiosity in her eyes. “I wonder if Kyo and Yuki were aware that other families could have a curse similar to the zodiac?”
Catra still had no idea what all this curse nonsense was, but she was both surprised and grateful that the girl hadn’t freaked out and run away upon seeing her… er, true form, as it were. However, the main problem was that she was currently being taken away from Adora, which was stressful because Catra needed Adora and also because Adora would undoubtedly freak out the moment she realized Catra was missing and cause havoc by turning into She-Ra or something. “Actually, I kind of have to stay here -”
“I promise, there’s no need to be nervous!” Tohru reassured her, and her voice was so gentle and sincere that Catra found herself struggling to not believe her. “If you stay here, someone might run into you who won’t understand what’s going on. They could even try to hurt you! I promise that I’m taking you to a safe place where there are people… where there are people struggling with a - a similar issue to what you have.”
Catra seriously doubted that. She was pretty sure that Earth had never had successful contact with other planets, meaning the chances of there being Etherians in this girl’s house were almost zero, much less Etherians like her. Still, the thought of going somewhere warm and dry with this pseudo-Perfuma who hadn’t lost her shit upon seeing that Catra was definitely not human was… well, rather appealing.
But Adora. Adora. She at least needed to let her know where she was going.
“When we… er, get to wherever you’re taking me, can I… send a message to the person I was waiting for?” Wow. She sounded so timid it was downright mortifying. “Just to let her know where I am.”
“Of course!” Tohru said as they turned a corner on the dirt pathway. “Your friend is absolutely welcome to join us. Is she cursed, too?”
Was She-Ra considered a curse? It sure felt that way sometimes. But Catra was still completely lost on what the whole ‘curse’ thing was, especially how it related to her being part cat. “Er, I don’t think so -” And she promptly cut herself off with another sneeze. Ugh. She was going to catch a cold.
“Don’t worry, we’re almost there!” Tohru said, pulling her slightly faster. True to her word, Catra could see a warmly lit house at the end of the road. “I’m so sorry we have to walk through the rain like this. But I’m going to make you some hot tea and give you a fluffy blanket and turn up the heat and just whatever you need to warm up and get comfortable, okay?”
And the girl did exactly that. She gave Catra a towel to dry off with as well as a set of clean clothing to change into before she practically swaddled her with a blanket and placed a steaming mug of tea on the low table in front of her. Really, her personality was the absolute epitome of Scorpia and Perfuma combined. Catra had also made sure to send Adora a message about her location while Tohru had been preparing everything, or else she knew she’d forget to do it entirely.
“Is everything okay? Would you like something to eat? There’s not a lot in the fridge, but I’m sure I can whip something up pretty quickly -”
“No, no, everything is fine,” Catra interrupted, still feeling kind of awkward around Tohru but also still relieved that the girl hadn’t - hadn’t fainted or anything. “I’m almost back to normal, uh, body-warmth already.” Ugh, that was horrendously phrased. Oh well. C’est la vie, or whatever Sparkles had taken to saying after visiting Flance. Finance? She really didn’t know what the country was called. Regardless, the girl either hadn’t noticed or hadn’t cared.
Tohru nodded, kneeling down on the side of the table opposite Catra. She placed Entrapta’s bracelet - or the pieces of it - down in front of her. “I was hoping I could repair this for you, but it’s not the same… er, anti-curse material that I’ve seen before. It seems to be technologically-based, and unfortunately I’m terrible with tech. I’m so sorry I couldn’t be of more help!”
Right. The ‘curse’. “Don’t worry about it,” Catra said, waving her hand dismissively. “I have a friend who can fix it.”
Tohru didn’t appear satisfied by her reassurance. “Are you certain? I can ask the person I know who’s in - who’s kind of… like you, so to speak, if he’ll take a look at it and see if he -”
Catra held up a hand to silence the girl, ears twitching. She could have sworn she heard footsteps from above them. “Tohru…” Weird. She was pretty sure that was the first time she’d addressed the girl by name. “Are we the only ones here right now?”
Tohru frowned. “I - I believe so. Why?”
Catra’s ears craned to catch the sound. The footsteps - they’d moved. Moved towards… “Because someone is about to come down those stairs,” she growled, lowering her voice to a whisper as she untangled herself from the blanket and vaulted across the table to land in front of Tohru, claws bared. “Stay behind me.”
“Okay,” Tohru squeaked, and Catra wasn’t sure if she was more afraid of the thought of an intruder or of Catra herself. Hopefully not the latter.
A tall boy with carrot-orange hair arrived at the foot of the stairs. “Tohru, are you bac-”
Catra’s tail flicked, and she launched herself at the boy. Damn, she couldn’t believe only a few months at Bright Moon - and numerous sessions with Perfuma - had turned her into someone who’d defend a stranger at a moment’s notice. Though she supposed Tohru wasn’t quite a stranger at this point.
Catra easily tackled the guy to the floor, her forearm lying across his throat with hopefully just enough pressure to keep him pinned down without her having to get on top of him. Her other hand loomed in a threatening manner above his face, claws still out. “Who are you, and what are you doing here?” she demanded.
“Miss Catrina, wait -” Tohru started to protest frantically, but she was soon cut off.
“What the hell?!” the guy snapped. “I could ask the same about you!” In the blink of an eye, he flipped Catra over his head with expertise she found begrudgingly impressive even as her back was slammed painfully onto the ground.
Shit. Now he had her in the same position she’d used on him. But damn, that was a good move on his part.
“So who the hell are you?” he growled, and Catra felt a chill run down her spine because she’d only heard that type of guttural noise twice before in her life - from Melog, and from… herself. “And why the fuck are you in our house?” She noticed the way his pupils had thinned in an… almost catlike manner. And - And it looked like he had fangs? Plus, now that her mind had set sail on that boat, she realized he smelled like a cat, too, in the way only another cat or, er, cat-person would know.
Oh, this was so weird. She never wanted to come back to this planet.
“Kyo, please stop!”
“Did she hurt you, Tohru?”
“No! She’s - She’s a friend! Sort of. She’s very nice, and she was just trying to protect me because I didn’t know you were home already, and - and I think she might be cursed, too!”
“What?” The boy - Kyo? - looked down at Catra, as if taking in her… well, unusual appearance - by this planet’s standards, at least - for the first time. The pressure against her neck lessened. “She’s… Wait.” He turned to look at Tohru, though he noticeably did not remove his arm from her neck entirely. “You’re telling me that the zodiacs aren’t the only -”
He was interrupted by the sliding door to the home being slammed open, with a familiar panicked voice filtering in. “Catra, are you -”
Crap. Adora, whom she loved with her entire being, always managed to have the worst timing.
Adora’s eyes widened as she took in the situation, then narrowed with a burning intensity Catra had only seen a few times before. Her girlfriend began to glow with a blue aura, her eyes shining with that same blinding light, though thankfully she stopped short of fully transforming into She-Ra. Glowing was easier to pass off as a trick of the light compared to suddenly growing three and a half feet taller, at least according to Glimmer. Catra was inclined to agree.
Adora’s protective nature was undeniably attractive, but Catra really didn’t want her girlfriend to have some poor guy’s murder on her conscience once everything got straightened out. “Adora, wait -”
“Get your hands off of her!” Adora snapped, grabbing the boy by the back of his shirt and slamming him against the wall.
The anxiety written all over Tohru’s face as she rushed over to the boy’s side indicated to Catra that there was clearly a massive misunderstanding going on. She pushed herself up into a sitting position. “Adora, stop -”
At the sound of Catra’s voice, Adora immediately dropped to her side, blue light fading as she pulled her into a bone-crushing hug, burying her face in her girlfriend’s shoulder. “Catra, don’t you dare run off on a strange planet ever again.”
The fear in Adora’s voice chillingly reminded her of their time on Horde Prime’s ship, and she had to blink back tears as she returned the hug. “Okay. I promise.”
Those words seemed to do the trick, as Adora relaxed before gently releasing her from the hug, pulling back to frantically look over her. “Are you okay? Did he hurt you? Do I need to -”
“I’m fine,” Catra interrupted, grabbing her girlfriend’s hands and giving them a reassuring squeeze. “Honest.”
Her insistence didn’t stop Adora from standing up and turning around with a lethal look in her eyes, her gaze narrowing as she focused on the boy, who had just managed to sit up with the help of Tohru and was now grimacing as he rubbed the back of his head. “What the hell were you doing with your hands on my girlfriend?!”
The boy glared at her in response, similarly getting to his feet as he did so, though noticeably more unbalanced than Adora had been. “Your girlfriend attacked me! I was trying to defend myself and protect Tohru!”
“So your idea of self-defense is to have her in a position that could be fatal? Sorry, but I have my doubts.”
“I have self-restraint, you dumbass! What the hell would I have to gain from killing her?!”
“Oh, sure, you say that now -”
“Enough!” Tohru shouted, jumping in front of the boy with her arms out and startling Adora to the point where she actually took a step back. Catra noticed that the girl was trembling, but she stood her ground. “Please. Stop arguing. Don’t - Don’t hurt him.”
Oh.
Oh.
The way her voice wavered. The way she’d immediately rushed to his side. The way she was clearly terrified but had still thrown herself in front of the boy to protect him. Hell, the way the boy had demanded to know if she had hurt Tohru before he’d even thought about himself.
There was something between them. Maybe they weren’t together, but Catra suspected it was only a matter of time.
Tohru took a deep breath, her body still visibly shaking. “I think there is a misunderstanding going on here, and that we all need to - to calm down for a moment. And talk.”
Catra nodded as she stood up, her hip slightly sore from the awkward angle that she’d been flipped onto the ground earlier. “Tohru’s right.” She slipped her hand back into Adora’s. “I did lash out first, because I thought Carrot Boy over there had broken into Tohru’s house, and even though we’d just met, Tohru had been really nice to me and I didn’t want her to get hurt. So I was just… trying to protect her.” Adora sent her a look that said I am so proud of you, which Catra pointedly ignored. “But that might have been a teeny bit of a hasty assumption for me.”
“Yeah, it was,” the guy snapped, though his expression softened slightly as Tohru placed a hand on his shoulder and gave him a worried look. “Listen. I live here, too, okay?”
Catra winced. “Er… Sorry?”
The boy didn’t respond, simply crossing his arms over his chest. He still smelled like a cat to her. Were there pets in this house somewhere that Catra couldn’t see?
“And we of course accept your apology,” Tohru said kindly, clasping her hands together. “Now, why don’t we properly introduce ourselves before we try to figure out the nitty-gritty details of what’s going on? My name is - ahh!” As she was stepping forward to offer her hand to Adora, her foot caught in the blanket Catra had previously been bundled up in, and she seemed to fall towards the floor in slow motion. Both Catra and Adora instinctively jumped to catch her, but the guy beat them to it, looping an arm around Tohru’s waist and pulling her backwards into his chest.
He helped stabilize her, their faces noticeably both cherry red, before giving a resigned sigh. Seconds later, he disappeared in an orange cloud of smoke, leaving a pile of clothes on the floor in his wake as well as an annoyed-looking cat the same color as the cloud sitting on top of his t-shirt.
As much as that made no sense to Catra, at least she could now conclude that he smelled like a cat and looked like a cat and acted like a cat because he… was a cat? Kind of?
“You know,” Adora said after a long pause, moving her arm to wrap around her girlfriend’s waist, “I thought this planet didn’t have any magic, but now… I’m pretty sure I was wrong.”
Catra sighed. “Great observation, babe.”
Explanations were definitely needed. On all sides.
~*~
Tohru thought the strangest day of her life would always be the first time she accidentally transformed Kyo, Yuki, and Shigure into their zodiac forms.
That day had now quite possibly been bumped down to second place.
“So you’re… from another planet?” Tohru repeated, the thought almost dizzying. “And you came to Earth to see if we - if we needed magic brought back to our world?”
Catrina - no, Catra, she chastised herself - nodded. There was a certain sympathy to her eyes. “Yes. I’m sure this is pretty overwhelming for you.”
That was putting it lightly. But Tohru shook her head. “No, it’s fine. I think I’m understanding it all now.” Though it was definitely a lot to take in. A small frown creased her lips, and she tilted her head slightly in confusion. “So then… You aren’t cursed?”
Catra snickered. “Cursed to be with this idiot, maybe,” she said teasingly, giving the blonde girl beside her - Adora - a fond look, who lightly elbowed her in response. “But no, I’m not cursed. This is my… true form, I guess.”
Tohru could feel her face pale at the girl’s words, and she didn’t miss the way Kyo flinched, either. “I see.”
There was an awkward pause, and Tohru had no idea how to break it. Normally she’d offer food or something to drink, but the two girls had already refused. Or rather, Catra had refused, much to what had looked like Adora’s silent dismay. Oh, she felt like a terrible hostess.
“So… you can transform into a giant warrior princess?” Kyo asked slowly, gesturing to Adora. “Which is why you got all glowy earlier? Like some magical girl anime?”
“I have no clue what that means, but yes. I can transform into She-Ra.” Adora gave him an apologetic smile. “And again, I’m really sorry for throwing you into the wall. I just saw you on top of Catra and completely freaked out.” She pressed a kiss to Catra’s temple, who blushed furiously at the action but made no move to get away, instead not-very-subtly scooting even closer to her. They were very cute, in Tohru’s opinion.
She noticed Kyo’s face soften as he watched their interaction. She loved that rare, gentle expression on him. “No,” he said quietly, eyes flickering over to Tohru before immediately dropping to the table. “I understand.”
Tohru could feel her face reddening at his words, brief as his glance towards her had been. If Adora and Catra noticed, they didn’t comment, for which she was silently grateful.
“Anyways,” Adora continued, “after asking around and getting stared at like a crazy person many, many times, I’d come to the conclusion that this planet was magic-free and always had been.” She pointed at Kyo. “And then you turned into a cat. Which I’ve only seen happen, like, one other time.” She glanced at Catra. “But Melog’s technically a shapeshifter, right? So it’s not the same thing.” She shook her head when Catra shrugged. “Not my point. So how did you do that, sir?”
Kyo picked at his fingernail, still not making eye contact with them. “Trust me,” he said, his voice low. “There was nothing magical about that.”
Catra raised an eyebrow, and she locked her gaze with Tohru’s. “Right. You kept talking about a curse.”
Tohru flinched, and she glanced at Kyo. “Ah, am I allowed to…?” She felt bad for mentioning it so many times earlier, but Catra had looked like a normal human and then her bracelet fell off and she’d suddenly had a dozen catlike features… she’d gotten such a chilling sense of déjà vu that a curse had felt like the most logical conclusion at the time.
Kyo sighed. “I mean, they’re from another planet. It’s not like they’re going to run into Akito. So why not?”
Tohru nodded, smoothing her skirt as she returned her attention to their guests. “A long time ago, there was a banquet hosted by God.” She tucked her hair behind her ear. The ribbon that normally held it back had fallen out amidst all the earlier chaos. “God invited 13 animals to join them at this feast. 12 attended. Eventually, all 13 animals vowed to remain by God’s side. Forever. This… bond has been recreated every generation through - through the Sohma family. If they are hugged by someone of the opposite sex, they turn into their zodiac form.” She hoped she wasn’t leaving out too much. There were just some things she wasn’t sure she should reveal.
Adora nodded, a thoughtful expression on her face. “I think I remember George and Lance talking about the zodiac when we were getting a crash course on Earth’s culture.” She frowned, seemingly puzzled. “But I don’t remember a family curse. Or a cat.”
“You wouldn’t.” Kyo’s gaze had hardened. “The curse is a secret. And the cat isn’t a part of the zodiac. Not in the same way.” He was fingering his bracelet, and Tohru desperately wished she could give him a comforting hug. Instead, she reached out and placed a hand on his knee. She could feel him relax at her touch - only slightly, but still a victory.
Tohru hadn’t missed the way Catra’s eyes had steadfastly remained on Kyo for much of the conversation. Maybe it was… a cat thing?
“So it seems like this zodiac curse might be an exception to Earth’s ‘no magic’ rule,” Catra finally said. “If it’s magic at all.”
“Is there a way to break this curse?” Adora asked. “I have - I have these sort of healing powers, as She-Ra, so maybe… I could help?”
Tohru couldn’t stop the hope bubbling in her chest at the thought. After learning that Kyo would be - would be… imprisoned after graduation, she was willing to do anything to prevent that from happening. “Kyo, do you think -”
“No.” His tone was flat, and Tohru flinched. He noticed her reaction, and grimaced apologetically. “Sorry. I just mean…” His fist clenched. “We’re… the Sohmas aren’t the kind of broken that your magic powers, or whatever, can heal. But thanks.” He managed a half-hearted smile. “I appreciate the offer.”
There was a pause. But for perhaps the first time since they’d all been in one room together, the silence had a certain tranquility to it, rather than an awkward tension. Which Tohru considered to be a sign of improvement.
“I guess we’ll need to get going soon,” Catra finally said. “Sparkles and Arrow Boy are going to wonder where we disappeared to.”
Adora chuckled. “You mean they’re going to smother us when we get back because they’ll have been stressed out of their minds.”
Wait, they had people waiting for them?! “I’m so sorry!” Tohru exclaimed, jumping to her feet. “Oh, your friends are going to be so worried about you!” She pushed her hair out of her face. “Would you like some - some food, or anything, for your trip back? I can pull something together in no time!”
Adora’s eyes lit up, but Catra beat her to it. “No, we’re fine,” she said with a small smile before shooting Adora a disapproving look. “You’ve already given us plenty of hospitality. We’ve overstayed our welcome.”
Adora appeared slightly disappointed but didn’t comment, instead standing up and pulling Catra to her feet beside her. Tohru noticed neither let go of the other’s hand. “Well, it was nice meeting you guys. And Kyo, again, I really am sorry I threw you into the wall. I hope we can move past that and be friends.”
A small smile formed on Kyo’s lips, and Tohru felt warmth blossom in her chest. “I’d say we’ve moved past it already. And for the record, your super-strength and glowy powers are pretty badass. Less so when I’m the one they’re directed at, but still cool.”
Adora laughed. “Thanks. I appreciate that.”
“I am also sorry for attacking you because I thought you were some creep,” Catra added. “I promise not to do it again. Cats are usually pretty solitary creatures, but that doesn’t mean we have to be enemies, right?”
Kyo laughed as he stood up, and Tohru felt her own smile widen further. “Agreed. But that’s not even the first time that’s happened to me, you know. Tohru also attacked me early on when we met because she thought I was a creep. Tried to knock me out with her school bag. So don’t feel too bad. I think I just have bad luck.”
Tohru buried her face in her hands, aware she was blushing up to her ears. “Kyo!” That was one of the most embarrassing moments of her life. She still felt terrible about it.
Catra snickered. “Oh, I wish I had time to stay and hear that story.”
“It’s a good one.” Kyo then shook his head. “I’m still not sure if this day has been real or if it’s just a weird dream from Yuki decking me and giving me a concussion, but if it is real, it was… interesting to meet you guys. Weird, but in a good way.”
Catra laughed, too. “Yep, that pretty much sums it up.”
“Is there any way we can stay in contact with you guys?” Tohru blurted out. She wasn’t entirely sure what compelled her to ask, but she knew a part of her would soon need proof that she hadn’t imagined their entire encounter. Also… They were her friends now. And she liked keeping in touch with her friends.
Adora frowned, turning to look at Catra. “We have a spare communications pad, don’t we? We could give it to her and just tell Bow we lost it.”
“You mean I will tell Bow we lost it,” Catra corrected as she swung her backpack around to her front and began fishing through it. “Because you’re a terrible liar and he wouldn’t believe you for a second.”
“Exactly. You know me so well.”
Catra rolled her eyes, but Tohru didn’t miss the soft smile that formed on her lips. It was the same smile her mother used to wear when she spoke about her father.
“Aha!” Catra then exclaimed triumphantly, pulling a weirdly-shaped tablet out of her bag and handing it to Tohru. “You can use this to contact us whenever you want. Although we’ll probably have to figure out what the time difference is between Etheria and Earth.”
Tohru accepted the tablet, holding it close to her chest. “Thank you,” she said sincerely. “I hope your quest to restore magic to the universe continues to be successful!”
They exchanged simple goodbyes - making sure to first give Tohru a rundown on how to use the communications pad, for which she was infinitely grateful - and then they left, hand in hand.
Tohru quickly ran to stash the tablet in her bedroom before returning downstairs, walking into the kitchen to see Kyo looking through the fridge. “Would you like me to cook something?” she offered, moving next to him to see what ingredients she’d have to work with.
Kyo lightly knocked her head. “I’ll cook. You can go rest. You’ve had a stressful day.”
“You have, too!” she protested, tucking her hair behind her ears. She was not backing down on this, and she tried to show her determination by squaring her shoulders and staring him down.
She had a feeling it came off as more silly than anything else, at least based on the amused - if fond - smile Kyo gave her.
“Okay, fine. How about we cook together?” he suggested. “Is that an acceptable compromise?”
Tohru beamed at him. “That sounds wonderful!” She clasped her hands together, eyes practically sparkling in excitement.  “Oh, we can make something for Yuki and Shigure! They’ll be back soon.” Yuki had been dealing with Student Council business all afternoon, and Shigure had been at the main Sohma estate the entire day. She was certain they’d appreciate coming home to a warm dinner on the table.
Kyo rolled his eyes. “You’re way too considerate of those bastards.”
“And you are too harsh on them,” Tohru chastised, shaking her head. The movement caused her hair to fall in her face again, and she promptly pushed it right back behind her ears. Hmm. Maybe she needed to consider getting it cut?
Apparently Kyo had noticed her struggle, as he left the kitchen for a moment before returning with her ribbon. She started to thank him and reach for it, but he shook his head. “Turn around.”
Tohru blinked, then did as instructed. At first she was rather stiff, but she soon found herself relaxing as Kyo’s hands gently moved through her hair, pulling it up into a ponytail.
“There,” he said after he finished. “Now it should stop getting in your way.”
Tohru instinctively reached up to touch her hair, almost surprised by how secure it felt. “That’s amazing, Kyo! I didn’t know you knew how to do hair.”
Kyo flushed. “It’s nothing fancy. Kagura made me do her hair all the time when we were kids. I remember the basics.”
Tohru couldn’t help but smile softly at the thought of young Kyo brushing and braiding a young Kagura’s hair. “That’s so sweet.” She beamed at him. “And thank you. I love it.”
Kyo’s blush deepened, and he looked away. “Seriously. It’s no big deal.” He paused, as if something had occurred to him. “Oh. Also.” He pulled a small silver bracelet out of his pocket and handed it to her. “I found this on the table. I think one of the girls might have left it.”
Tohru’s eyes widened, recognizing the bracelet as the object that had generated Catra’s human disguise. “Oh, this is Catra’s!” she said frantically, accepting the bracelet from him. “We have to get it back to her! It’s not too late to catch up to them, is it?”
Kyo grabbed her wrist as she started to dash towards the door. “Slow down, dummy,” he said, pulling her back into the kitchen. “They’re long gone.”
He was right. She knew he was right, but - “I feel like we need to return it to her! Somehow.”
“Maybe. But surely she wouldn’t have left it if it was that important.”
Tohru hesitated, glancing down at the broken bracelet cradled in her palms. “Okay,” she finally agreed, relaxing slightly. “That does make sense.” She tucked the bracelet into the pocket of her skirt.
Maybe one day she’d be able to fix it. Maybe one day she could ask them how to fix it by contacting them through the tablet they’d given her. Maybe one day they’d even return in person to pick it up themselves.
No matter what… She would see them again. She was sure of it.
Tohru turned to Kyo, giving him a brilliant smile. “Let’s get cooking!”
~*~
“And you’re sure you’re not hurt -”
“Adora! I told you that I’m fine.” Catra rolled her eyes. “Seriously. You worry too much.”
“You’re my girlfriend. It’s my job to worry about you.” Adora sighed, her arms moving from being crossed over her chest to clutching her own shoulders as she hugged herself tightly. “That was terrifying, Catra. Walking in to see some random guy leaning angrily over you with his arm against your throat?” She shuddered. “Ugh. I’m going to have nightmares about that one.”
Catra could feel her expression softening, and she walked across their room on Mara’s ship to place her hands on Adora’s shoulders. “I’m sorry I scared you. But I promise that I’m okay. I honestly don’t think Kyo had any intention to hurt me, anyways.”
Adora’s arms fell to her sides, her hands coming to rest on Catra’s waist. “What makes you say that?”
“You mean besides the fact that he’s actually a nice person?” Catra shrugged. “I just had a feeling, I guess.” Something about the look in his eyes. Fear, panic, desperation. All overshadowed by concern. A willingness to do anything for that one person.
It had been like looking in a mirror.
She pulled Adora into a hug, burying her face into her girlfriend’s shoulder. “I love you.”
Adora didn’t hesitate to wrap her arms around her in response. “I love you, too.”
They stayed like that for a while. Catra eventually lifted her head, turning to face a direction where she could see out the window, out into the infinite void of space. They’d long since flown away from Earth. But still…
Catra had a feeling they’d see them again. Tohru and Kyo.
She was sure of it.
(After all, they’d have to go pick up her bracelet one day.)
How shit are your parents, Fruits Basket Edition, Part 2
Yuki Sohma: We kind of already touched on Yuki’s mother in Ayame’s part, but she somehow got worse the second time around when having another child.
Willingly gave Yuki to the head of the family, with no care in the world what was happening to him, even when Yuki begged for help.
I genuinely wonder what she would’ve been like if Yuki hadn’t been cursed but given what I know and have seen of narcissistic parents, it is unlikely things would’ve been any better for Yuki. If anything, the abuse directly from her may have been worse because she would’ve expected so much more of Yuki. -1/10 (yes she loses points for the second child).
Kyo Sohma:
We’re going to rank Kyo’s parents individually and include Kazuma, who will also be rated separately too.
Kyo’s father is up there with Rin’s parents as the definition of human garbage. He is spiteful man, and probably has a tiny pencil dick.
While I kind of understand how the parents of the cat are treated by proxy by the rest of the Sohma family, I feel like that doesn’t explain or excuse his father’s abuse well enough. Like, cool motive, but you’re still an abusive asshole. Probably still would’ve been an abusive asshole even if his son wasn’t the cat. -5/10
Like, at least Kyo’s mum tried, you know? She at least tried to be a good mother to Kyo, even if she was very overprotective and even scared of her son. Was also severally abused by both her husband and the rest of the Sohma family, eventually leading to her suicide. I can be a bit more sympathetic towards her because her downfall seems to be more a combination of the stress/fear of/for Kyo and also being severally abused and ostracised, but she still ultimately loses many points due to her suicide. 3/10.
Kazuma is everything a good parent should be, and without Kazuma, it’s very probable Kyo would’ve ended up a hell of a lot worse. He is legit 100% fed up with all the Sohma family bullshit and if possible, probably would’ve bitch slapped Akito and Ren for half the shit they did. Absolutely would’ve murdered Kyo’s father if given the chance.
He has his own skeletons in his closet, but he’s learned to grow and move on from them. Tries his best to not let his own issues affect Kyo. 9/10
Hatsuharu Sohma: There is almost zero mention of Haru’s parents in the manga, but the one time we do hear of Haru’s mother is when the school contact her after he has destroyed a classroom. Haru describes her as a woman ‘who cares a great deal about her appearance’ and that she made no rush to turn up at the school. It’s mentioned they put him in martial arts to help his anger as a child, but did nothing else to help when Haru was being bullied by the rest of the Sohma family.
At best, they’re still neglectful. 3/10.
Momiji Sohma: Momiji’s are not physically abusive, or even necessarily ‘emotionally’ abusive, at least not directly. But they sure as do fuck rank pretty damn high on the “how shit are your parents” scale.
First off, Momiji’s mum. Like, I’m sorry, you give birth to a kid that turns into a rabbit, which is pretty low on the cursed Sohma scale, and you act like you gave birth to the fucking anti-Christ. She probably has postnatal depression, but I earnestly feel like that doesn’t excuse how she reacted. I know the Sohma’s have a pretty fucked up system going on ‘inside’, but you’re telling me she had NO other option then to try to commit suicide and then effectively abandon her child? She could’ve taken medication, talked with other parents of cursed children, maybe even taken 3 months off.
There is nothing anyone can do or say to me to justify the way she reacted, hell, even just how poorly she reacted makes me sure as hell wonder what would’ve happened if it hadn’t been the curse.
Let’s say Momiji was born neurotypical, or born with a physical impairment, or came out as gay or trans, you think THIS woman would’ve at all handled that well either?
Momiji’s father, even though he isn’t physically or emotionally abusive either, also loses a lot of points for this as well. He CHOSE to stay with her. He CHOSE her over his son, someone who never asked to be born or cursed. Like, okay, you remove her memories, at least maybe have the decency to ask for a divorce and let her move on with her life and, be a decent father to Momiji.
God forbid if Momo turns out to have anything ‘wrong’ with her because it’s probably just gonna be the exact same thing all over again.
-5/10
Hiro Sohma: No mention of a father but given that Hiro has a little sister… someone must be there. Or mum got a sperm donor.
Honestly, she’s up there with Kazuma as the only valid Sohma parents. Handled the curse stuff great. Don’t know how she feels about the abuse of Akito and the rest of the family, or even if she KNOWS about it. Reminds me of Tohru in a lot of ways, I get the feeling that Hiro would’ve latched onto Tohru more if he hadn’t been jealous of her ‘stealing’ Kisa. 8/10
Kisa Sohma: No mention of a father either.
Honestly, Kisa’s mum isn’t that bad, and reminds me a lot of Kagura’s mom or Ritsu’s mum.
Her first introduction were Kisa went missing seemed to be a mixature of being overprotective of Kisa because of the curse but also fear and worry about whatever was going on with Kisa. Honestly, giving them some time apart and then Kisa finding ways to deal with her bullying at school probably did them a lot of good. She seems much happier and healthier later.
Never shown to be physically or emotionally abusive or neglectful of Kisa. 7/10.
BONUS ROUND:
Akito Sohma:
Yeah, Akito never really stood much of a chance, even without the curse. We know Ren is ... not well, either physically or mentally.
Might’ve stood more of a chance if Akira had survived/there was no curse, but given how jealous and spiteful Ren has been shown to be, I have serious doubts.
Akira himself doesn’t seem like a bad guy, and seems to adore and love his child. But also seems very aware Ren is not right. Probably should’ve made better plans on who and how his daughter was raised after he died.
4/10 for Akira, -50/10 for Ren.
