Hannah Watches LOSH - Man of Tomorrow

This is my start on what will be a one episode-per-post re-watch and review/analysis of Legion of Superheroes. I am going to go through all the episodes of both seasons, and when I finish the show, I will also go into the comics afterward. I will try to aim for once a week at minimum, but that depends on school. The reviews will be made while I’m watching, with much pausing and commentary being made and screenshots being shown, and a final word at the end on both the episode overall and the characters.

I will also be comparing my view when I first saw the episode vs now. Also please keep in mind I did not start with the first episode when it aired. And these will all have my opinion alone, and if you have any feedback/comments you want to give, go ahead ^^

So, let’s start of with the first episode.

Man of Tomorrow

So we first get the preview of the Legion fighting the Fatal Five before cutting to Clark Kent during his last night in Smallville before going to Metropolis.

Watching this again, it struck me that Clark probably didn’t get the best support from his parents on the super power part.

What do I mean? Ma Kent said “Just please be careful. Remember Clark, your not like the rest of us.” Which he replies with “I know.” Now in the animated show most people are familiar with, the superpowers came into being around high school. But his parents seemed to have handled it rather well, as does Clark in the end, and he is given a device that has a message from his birth parents to give him an explanation. But here that’s not the case. I think it’s more likely that the parents were less ready to deal with superpowers, and god, given Clark didn’t know squat about Krypton as evident in the comics that tied into the show – will go into that eventually, who knows how well Clark was dealing with the powers when they first came up. Probably much worse than in the Superman animated series.

Speaking of parents, noticed that Pa was not in the episode. Where is he? Is he dead in this version? Ho geeze, adds to the stress the poor guy must be under.

And then we get our time bubble trio aka TBT: Brainiac 5, Saturn Girl, and Bouncing Boy. I wonder what the decision process was behind them. Which will be discussed in a bit.

Cutting back to the fair, we get more evidence of Clark not dealing the best way with his powers after a Jock taunts him and his physical abilities. He is getting ready to toss the ball, recalls Ma’s words. And god, the facial expressions now have the ability to pick apart my heart now.

Just. Ow.

And then comes the trope-tastic faulty Ferris wheel. I bet Grunkle Stan branched out to this fair.

And then we get back to the TBT. What do you mean food on a stick is not normal?! WHAT DO YOU DO FOR POPCICLES?! COTTON CANDY?! CANDY APPLES?!

Wait, how did he get that food? Was it samples? Or did the trio steal it?

I couldn’t help but snicker at Brainy’s and Saturn Girl’s expression at Bouncing Boy. Imma have to go with “stealing”

Also, what performance would the TBT be part of? I mean, I understand cosplay at a convention, but they look a little off the mark at the fair for me. But I would totally pay money to see that performance.

And it happens.

The beginning of what was one of the many triggers in many for shipping a gay ship.

When I first watched this show, I was in elementary. I was having some curiosity towards gay ships – I was in a very heavy weeabo state, and especially into CLAMP’s manga, which is filled with LGBT characters. I was also going through a bit of a religious phase, and my parents aren’t the most accepting people, especially back then. So I was scared by possibly shipping anything that wasn’t deemed right. I wouldn’t go bashing in public, but I wouldn’t confide with others. I wouldn’t really support the LGBT community until high school.

But now, I can fully appreciate the show and what it tried to do. The storyboards probably have more representation for the LGBT community by far, but still, I will take what I can get with this show… THAT’S A LIE I WANT THOSE STORYBOARDS.

Gotta appreciate the dramatic music that comes with the scene as well.

Look at those two concerned guardians.

Now back to Clark.

Given my earlier talk with him and his powers… THIS BOY MUST HAVE HAD A HEART ATTACK WHEN BOUNCING BOY SPOKE TO HIM. HE WAS CAUGHT. YET HE GOES “EVERYTHING IS FINE HERE,” AND PROCEEDS TO SWOOP IN WHEN THE THING STARTS TO FALL APART. KUDOS TO MY BOY IN HOLDING HIMSELF TOGETHER.

GRUNKLE STAN YOU HAVE A LOT OF EXPLAINING ON THE STATE OF THAT FERRIS WHEEL.

Saturn Girl, I don’t think now is the time for intros.

Pfft, BB is confused by this as well, to the point where his animation is a wee bit off.

And then he proceeds to walk behind Clark and… what’s the best word for this…

WHAT A PRECIOUS FACE THAT FOLLOWS THAT SILLY BOING NOISE. AND THE WAY HE SAYS “help?” AFTERWARDS IS SO CUTE. EXPRESSIONS IN THIS EPISODE ARE SO GOOD.

I never realized how big Bouncing Boy could get.

Clark starts to nope out, and Saturn Girl said she did the same thing when she saw Bouncing Boy to do that as well.

And cue more internal panicking for Clark.

So, did Saturn Girl like did the whole fair a mind wipe, or just the guys who were witnesses?

More gayness, both sides.

And Clark has a gay panic.

Which will eventually turn into “I’m not Straight” in the future. I’ve been through that phase my boy.

Saturn Girl looks like a mom here, telling the kids to stop flirting atm.

Oh man, Clark asking them not to tell anyone about the super power thing. What a heart breaker.

“It’s okay. We know all about you.”

Wow, great conversation starter B5, totally not sounding like a stalker.

BRAINY WHY DID YOU CUT OFF BOUNCY?! JEALOUSY?! LOOK AT THESE GOSHDARN EXPRESSIONS.

Good job B5, weirded out your crush.

At least Saturn Girl knows saying “Coming to the future” sounds crazy.

“Clark!”

“Wait!”

Oof. My heart at his voice.

And Cool Mom has to step in.

He looks like a kicked dog at this frame.

Let us appreciate how immediately when Saturn Girl says “Let’s just give him some time,” the episodes is edited so that they show up in the kitchen at his house.

So Saturn Girl has a coffee mug, Bouncing Boy has pie, and nothing for the green child. Oh, and embarrassment for Clark.

Well, okay, B5 kinda looks like an angry kid who’s upset their BF is an hour late to the date.

And the introduction the do at the home seems to be much smoother at the fair. Think they did rehearsals waiting for Clark to get home? Did they switch out constantly? And how far did B5 take his crush with the rehearsals?

But Clark defiantly has a lot of self-doubt at the idea of him being a super hero. He uses his powers for good, but he definitely lacks the confidence that he’s good enough for it. He laughs it off at first, then seems a little angry and scared at how much they knew about his powers. Reminds me now of Yuuri Katsuri. And given how little confidence I have had in the last few years about myself, I can further appreciate him now than what I did back then.

Clark was very tempted in coming at “Come with us and you won’t have to hide them anymore.” It’s like getting a safe place to come out, finally, after years of being told that it’s safer to hide himself. Further more appreciative with time for me.

Wow, B5 looks so demanding here.

(Where did they keep that time bubble tho?? It just appeared out of nowhere?)

I kinda laughed at the part where Ma goes “Take a sweater!” then comes down stairs, confused at what he said. “Future?”

I like the atmosphere of New Metropolis in this show. Good use of complementary colors in this shot.

AND THANK ****ING GOD LOOK AT TRIPLICATE GIRL IN HD HER SKIN IS DARKER

I CRY BLOOD AT THE FACT THAT THE FACT SHE WAS SUPPOSE TO BE MUCH DARKER AND THEN SHE CAME OUT SO PALE IN SD QUALITY THANK GOD FOR HD

Granted the concept art of her gave her darker skin but SHE’S SO BEAUTIFUL WITH DARK SKIN

And here we have Queen Sinnamon Roll and Lighting Trash Baby, who PG proceeds to sass out with an eye roll and reality, and then has Trips back her up. Positive female friendships, that’s an instant gold star.

What a jealous baby, getting phased through and shoved aside. Thinking back to the jock we saw earlier, I find it interesting that Lightning Lad was made to fit that image on the first episode. Interesting move. Perhaps it was to show the character development as we went along?

The girls look so disappointed that the skinny Superman came out instead of some muscular guy. Personally, I prefer the skinny Superman design. Muscular guys just don’t seem as attractive to me as often. Might have something to do with that I find myself attracted to girls more often. But I love all girls, and buff girls are on the list of those I am weak for, so I’m just further confused. Maybe I just need another 10 years to figure this one out.

And when Lightning Lad proceeds to poke fun at B5 and Clark…

Brainy looks like a cat who is planning his demise. I had cats for a little over ten years. I know this look. Brainy is giving him the look that says he will murder him in his sleep. Painfully.

And then Lightning Lad proceeds to be a jerk, doing the last thing Clark needs: degrading him on his powers. After everything I talked about earlier, this hurts me in the hard. Trash Baby will be sent to the garbage pit as required.

We cut to the Superman museum, where Saturn Girl brings Clark to speed what’s going on, explaining who the Fatal Five are.

While watching this episode, I realized how much emotional support and guidance Saturn Girl provided for those in need – particularly B5 and Clark in this one. And she doesn’t seem to need to read their minds to figure out what they are feeling. So really, that is really thought provoking. Maybe she studied psychology or hosts therapy groups. In any case, it makes her far more interesting as a person.

I’m kind of interested to see what the military forces were like in this show’s universe, given that they were deemed not available for help against the Fatal Five. How restricted are they? Is there restrictions based on international laws? And as for the Science Police… well, I’m going to discuss that in a future episode.

Okay so tallying up the other legionnaires who were mentioned when the code red was sent out. Shrinking Violet was undercover, Colossal Boy is on Rawl (did I spell that right?), while Cosmic Boy, the leader, is at the outpost, where it is commented he won’t make it on time. Good god, they were spread thin. Just how much shit is going on elsewhere?! Just leave less than ten people at the HQ where one of the biggest problems will find them. NOT A PROBLEM AT ALL.

So the Fatal Five show up, and at least the police try to do something, but still get their asses kicked. A for effort.

And what does Clark do when confronted with his first Comic Villain fight? At first he seems like he’s running away. Leaving the Legion to get their butts kicked. But instead he’s getting the costume, and tries to fly. He’s taking a step forward to define himself as someone who can help. He’s becoming Superman.

But how did that costume just suddenly adjust to the tinier frame? Krypton Science?

And what about his hair? It changed too! It just popped out that signature curl!

Regarding the fight, there are several things I noticed: Triplicate Girl can be forcibly merged back into one singular being, and all three of her can carry Persuader and PG with the ax. Validus chased Bouncing Boy like a dog, which was kind of funny. Lightning Lad abandons his original opponent during fight to go help his teammates, and manages to resist for a while. And then he gave Superman tips in fighting. Saturn Girl is the first to break out of the control, and uses her powers to free the others. B5 has strong robot muscles (what’s the mechanical equivalent?)

Also, I think I should thank this episode for giving the idea of the ax for a weapon in the SU AU i work with, since she got to hold it several times in the episode.

Now regarding the villains, honestly the only one who I find of any interest is Emerald Empress. She was just so causal to Superman when she sees him in costume, and sounded disappointed at the small number of the people who came to confront her team, which gives her some character. Also, I heard somewhere that she is a lesbian. If anyone has a source that can confirm, I would appreciate it so much, cuz I need more queer ladies in my life.

Post fight, Lighting Lad says he knew Superman could do it, only to get the look from everyone. Karma much?

And we see sad Brainy when he says Superman has to go home.

But then Superman is the one who proposes he stays.

And as one last boot to the episode, Superman steals what Lightning Lad’s spot during flight with Brainy’s help. Continuing Karma on the trash baby.

So final thoughts on the episode overall.

It’s a good start the first season, definitely. But I feel there could be better execution. Like the first bit can get people to think that the fight happened before the Legion went to fetch Superman. Like only some of them managed to get away from the Fatal Five, and realize they need help in rescuing the rest of the Legion. That would be more interesting for a first episode, to me anyway.

Villains could have used more development.

Maybe seeing a bit more of the life back at Smallville would have been nice as well.

And how did that decision for the Time Bubble Trio/TBT go? I know B5 probably demanded to go, justifying he was the one who built the device. And wanted to see Superman first. But why Saturn Girl and Bouncing Boy? Did they draw stick, or was it based on the idea that they are probably the most responsible of the group? TELL ME~

But given what we got, I love it. The members of the legion are fun to watch, and it’s a good take on the younger Superman, and the interpretation I got out of the episode was so much deeper than what I got when I was younger.

And kudos out to the staff in trying to squeeze that gay stuff in.

Characters in this episode:

I really like Superman/Clark’s personality here. I can relate to it now better than how I did when I was younger. And now the experience seems like a parallel to finding a safe place to come out. Gold. Star.

Brainiac 5 was nice to see, crushing on Superman. We discover more of him personality wise later on, but it’s so good to see the gay game getting on this early.

Saturn Girl – god I love how she’s so emotionally aware of others in parts of this episode. This girl is definitely someone I would talk to during a hard time.

Lightning Lad… thank god for later character development. He’s a lovable brat here, but needs that character development stat.

Bouncing Boy is a delight. Such goodness in a person. An early-version of Hunk from Voltron. Good emotional support as well.

Seeing the sass that just oozes from Phantom Girl is a joy. My beautiful daughter.

And Triplicate Girl… THANK GOD YOU ARE NOT AS PALE HERE IN HD AS YOU WERE IN SD. I feel that we could have seen more of her and PG, but I really love how they got along in the HQ before the TBT got back.

The villains. Not much to say other than what I said about Empress earlier and that they needed development overall. Sorry.

Ok but I'm curious, what's the difference between having a gay ship and fetisizing gay ppl?

Oh man, this is gonna get long, I have some serious thoughts about this. So warning, this isn’t some short post. Also, any mistakes are because I typed this originally on my phone due to studying for finals next week.

Before I start, the reason I’m tagging Yuri On Ice is because this stems from a post that was in the tag a while ago that I commented on(I’ll find the post and link it later on), also that I see the blurred lines people have between the two often in the tag. I’m not getting into the high level of biphobia i’ve seen either, that’s another rant/vent for another day after finals. Feel free to say what you disagree and all that!

So, a gay ship is about characters thst have connection, that they have multiple interactions and spend time together outside their profession, competition, practice. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a canon relationship but it makes sense the possibility of them. I’m not even in the Voltron fandom but Keith and Lance fall into this. They aren’t canon, but it’s a ship based on their interactions, working together, compatability, spending time together. Yuuri and Victor are straight up canon.

Fetishizing a gay ship/characters is that the reason you like the two together is straight up because they are attractive, because they are ‘gay’, be it headcanon gay or canonly. You get off on the two characters because they look good together. That these two characters don’t even speak to each other or even in the same scene, that they have no interaction beyond light conversation about their friends and fellow skaters while they are watching them skate their hearts out. Where you turn canonly straight, in a heterosexual relationship character gay because you want them together with another character of the same sex and ONLY because that.

I see this with quite a few of the ships in the fandom and hell, I even low key ship them. These are the long as fuck stretch for a ship, the forcing together ones for anything possible that i’ve noticed. Things like Phichit and Seung-Gil, Mila and Sara who have only SAT together and had light talk about their friends yet I’ve seen out right screaming they are nothing but lesbian despite creators saying Mila had a light crush and highly admired Otabek(So fuck yeah to idea of a female bi character!). ANY SHIP WITH GEORGI OR JJ. Georgi can simply be a headcanon of bisexual and no, him being a drama queen with too much eyeshadow doesn’t make a character gay, that’s a damn stereotype of gay men. But JJ is canonly engaged, to a woman, who is his world and he loves.

A few ships that are easy to argue possibly canon but more up to fan opinion are Yuri and Otabek as a very easy to argue as being canon as all hell despite people forgetting they only been friends for few short days, Michele and Emil, Guang Hong and Leo, Christophe and mystery man(that’s mostly a headcanon I personally love though and will fight for) and there a few more.

A HEALTHY gay ship is set on two characters that know each other, interact often, and that you don’t have to alter their entire personality (Seung-Gil as example) to make them 'work’. Fetishizing a gay ship is forcing them together, ignoring facts they don’t even speak, that they only LOOK at each other once across a filled room so they must obviously be in love, where you have to remove a canon, healthy relationship because they are in a heterosexual relationship because it gets in the way of your ship. You simply ship them because they are hot and get you off.

Gays ships can be healthy, fetishizing isn’t, even if the ship you make is rather cute.

There isn’t anything wrong with liking the idea of characters together, that you think they would be good together, but it’s when screaming, shouting, making comments about 'my smol sinnamon roll gays’(seriously, I see this so fucking often in posts where every single character is gay, not even bi or pan or asexual with no ifs, ands, or buts).

It’s easy for people to see and understand the fetish people have about lesbians especially in porn, but it’s completely IGNORED and scoffed at the idea of gay men being someones fetish. It’s something that needs to be realized and talked about, because it hurts so many people.

Why Yuuri Skates Half Blind

After seeing the post where Chris wears contacts on the ice while Yuuri just goes half blind, it really struck a chord in me like "Hey, I've done something stupid like that before." and it really got me thinking. Why doesn't Yuuri wear contacts on the ice? There could be a variety of reasons from health, his eyes not being suitable for contacts, etc. but assuming that Yuuri is perfectly capable of wearing contacts, why does he choose not to? There isn't any proof of this at all but this is just my thoughts on a plausible reason why. Stupid and dangerous as it is, perhaps he chose not to - because of his anxiety. Why? Because he can't see the audience clearly at all. Yuuri doesn't perform well under a huge amount of pressure. We see him breakdown when faced with the pressure to hold first place from the SP and to keep his and Viktor's reputation from tarnishing if he screws up. He performs slightly better away from his home crowd. He thinks that nobody in the audience supports him and that the audience is there to watch him fail. I'm a person with anxiety but I've also been a part of the performing arts for a good decade. When you're on stage, the audience eyes are on you even when you're in a big group. You feel the pressure of a hundred pairs of eyes staring at you and scrutinising your every move. You go into every performance with the reputation of yourself, your group, your conductor, and even your school on the line. This is what Yuuri must have felt at some point. It's really damn scary. I've emceed for huge crowds of more than a thousand, I've sung with a choir in full auditoriums under the stress of competition. And I did at least half of these events half blind like Yuuri. In fact, I chose to emcee or sing half blind due to anxiety. The days I did choose to wear my glasses were the days where my anxiety wasn't bad or I didn't feel under a lot of pressure. But other than that, I intentionally chose not to wear my glasses because not seeing the audience clearly really took a lot of the pressure off. When you're short-sighted and myopic, you won't be able to see the audience and even the judges clearly when they're quite a distance from you. You see these people as a blob of colour that look like humans but you can't see them clearly at all. You don't really think about them much but you're aware that they are human and they are watching you. You're able to focus a *little* better without the scrutinising eyes..... But not so advantageous for looking at your conductor or doing something as dangerous as dancing or ice skating (thankfully for me, I was placed in the front row of the choir so I could see the conductor easily). Singing half blind is HARD. And I'm just standing still. I've no idea how Yuuri does figure skating half blind or how high his degree even is. Jesus. Bless this precious sinnamon roll before he hurts himself. But wait! Yuuri was squinting and attempting to see! It is actually normal for people with myopia to squint when they're not wearing glasses. Squinting is a natural way to help your eyes focus a little better - but only to a certain extent and not really effective if you have a high degree. Sometimes you won't even realise that you're squinting at all. Yuuri's sultry bedroom eyes in Eros were either planned as part of his femme fatale persona or...... Yuuri just trying to see on the ice. I suppose this puts my rambling/theory to its end so.... #PrayForYuuri #BlessYuuri #GiveYuuriContacts2k17

Georgi, the 3rd Yuri - Part 3

DISCLAIMER: This is a long meta. I wrote this along with a friend and we spent pretty much a week analyzing a lot of stuff, from the anime scenes to interviews and even song lyrics. There’s a ton of text, many links and it can get kind of pretty image heavy in some parts.

To help with this, and for organization’s sake, we divided this meta in 4 parts.

Eros, Agape, Philia, Storge... We all know that the Greek are responsible for many ways of thinking and questioning society, so it’s not surprising that they developed an analisys over something as abstract as love.

One of our biggest mistakes is to think that love englobes all kinds of affection. Recognizing that there are many faces for this feeling makes it easier for us not to get dissapointed in life but also makes it easier to understand Yuri!!! On Ice.

We wouldn’t have so many details, so many stories, come they or not from the protagonists, if the narrative wasn’t trying to tell us something. And it’s so obvious that it throws at our faces - or, better, at Yuuri and Yurio’s faces - two of the types of love: Agape and Eros. This chase of Yurio’s for unconditional and selfless love wouldn’t be so important if it wasn’t valid for the plot, and neither would’ve Yuuri’s quest to find his Eros if it wasn’t applicable to the narrative and for his future (or even a canon past that we still don’t have).

Let’s take a closer look at those definitions of love?

Starting with Agape, that looks so simple and easy, but needed so much effort for Yuri Plisetsky not to understand, but to accept it. For him, it’s hardd to bring out the essence of this feeling during the interpretation of his short program and, when he can find it in the memory of his loved grandpa, he loses himself in the middle of his performance. Why is it so painful to accept Agape, Yurio?

We’re taken to believe that since he was very small, his life was surrounded by responsabilities that shouldn’t belong to a child. To go far away from his family, from his mother - and later from his grandpa - to dedicate himself to the ungrateful figure skating career. Even though it’s so beaufiful to watch, we all know how this world has their favorites and how short an athlete’s life is on the competitive area.

Your career is short and you need to take the maximum that you can from it; any mistake can mark you, the favorites outshine you, the sponsors pick carefully who’s worthy of their investments and, desperately, Yurio wants to bring the judge’s and world’s attention to himself. So much focus on this harsh world made him harden; if he accepts so easily love and its weaknesses, he fears not being able to go forward. Plisestky doesn’t like to feel weak, doesn’t like losing. Each medal he doesn’t win, each place lower in the podium is like having his record stained. How can someone so young get lost in so much fear?

And this quest for the denied Agape is hard, but rewarding. Yurio recognizes with time that he always had selfless love close to him. He has the love and support of his beloved grandpa, the trust of his coach, Yuuko’s friendship, the reception of the Katsuki family during his stay in Japan, the newly discovered friendship with Otabek... And all of this love and affection given to him without the need to receive anything back made him discover the best of himself. After so much time seeing love as a weakness, the feeling is now the origin of his strength: Agape was found.

But if this love is selfless and considered the purest side of the feeling, Eros is its total opposite. Does it mean that it’s bad? No, it only means that it isn’t eternal.

If for Yurio recognizing Agape in his life was a problem, imagine it for Yuuri, who’s a man so modest and emotionally blocked, to accept the desire he kept inside? To have these two Yuris skating to such contrasting feelings makes it look like, at first, as a proposal because they have nothing in common with them, however, they don’t want to admit that they have inside them those versions of love, since, as the Greek says, we all have all of them inside us.

And we can clearly see Yuuri’s wish to be desired when he decides to explore for himself, when he decides to incorporate a seductive woman, since he can’t bring out the playboy at the moment.

Insinuating, seductive... Yuuri knows who he wants to get to, knows who he wants to seduce. Victor’s the worlds most desired single, his friend Nishigori asks him if he can seduce Nikiforov. Does he thinks so? No would be the obvious answer, but we see Yuuri wanting to try to prove the contrary, who wants to show his Eros and become an object of desire to conquer the Russian and to show the world that, yes, he’s capable of taking Victor away from the world - even though he never says this out loud.

It can be seen in his actions, in his skating... It’s a challenge to conquer his emotional, the anxiety and discomfort with his body, still, Yuuri does all of that. “I am Eros and Eros is me?” he asks. Yes, Katsudon, you exist in Eros and Eros exists in you. It’s okay to be a sinnamon roll, you’re doing a great job.

His intentions are clear; while part of him is embarrassed over so much skin exposed and feels invaded with the public displays of affection, Yuuri has lust enough to free his desires as he does a full pole dance performance, asks for Victor to keep his on him and only him, almost declares a cold war with the Russian public in the Rostelecom Cup when he shows them all the love he has to offer, plays with the judges, blows kisses, gets more and more audacious in his programs and, discretely, revealing not to be as closed to the touch as we imagined at first.

After all, if this was true, he wouldn’t have let Chris grope his butt when they met at the Cup Of China, and wouldn’t have shared with Giacometti his seductive performance made of drinks and almost no clothing.

He is the playboy of his story and he knows that. For this reason and because he’s embarrassed to bring this out, it’s easier for Yuuri to agree that “a seductive role is not for him”. Of course it is, playboy. You proved us enough already.

In this we enter one of Yuuri’s biggest challenges, that maybe confuses him about the depth of his feelings for Victor. We’re talking about Nikiforov, the living legend, his country’s pride, loved by the world, the best of a whole generation, desired single and star that’s printed in every poster all over all over Yuuri’s room. It’s almost a dream to have a man like this at your side, and even more to have him saying that he’s going to train you, bring out the best of yourself. And is it Victor that does it? Or is it Yuuri that, dazzled to have his childhood and teenagehood star at his side, starts to try to keep him close?

“I’m the only one that can satisfy Victor.”

Now look at his pretentiousness! He’s good and he knows that! He’s seductive, yes, maybe not with a sex appeal as explicit as Chris, but he does have his own Eros! To have Victor at your side, with his eyes only for you - as Yuuri challenges him -, that’s something to inflate anyone’s ego. Wouldn’t you be satisfied to have the world’s best figure skater’s gaze for you only? To be, even as the public calls for him, the center of attention?

Overwhelming, strong, sweeping, explosive... And ephemeral. Passion is like fire over straw, fast, intense, it dominates you completely and then, as fast as it comes, it goes away and leaves nothing behind to tell the story. Does it mean that nothing else will exist between Victor and Yuuri? No, it only means that what they have right now will end someday. And, while Eros is the biggest responsible for trying them together, if it goes away what’s left over the couple that almost doesn’t speak sincerely when they’re not skating?

Yuuri is the playboy of his tory and no one doesn’t even suspects it. But you remember what happens after the most desired woman in town is seduced, right?

Contrary to the transient love that is Eros, Philia is more lasting, and also more loved and praised by the Greek. Defined as the love between friends and the camaderie of brothers in arms, Philia is based mostly on loyalty; with the friends, with the job, with the country. It’s the love that commits itself, but that also lets it go if it’s better for the other party.

And who’s better to represent Philia if not Georgi Popovich?

A sensitive soul, dedicated to his art and his sport, a diligent student that always listens to his coach’s orders and advices, loyal to his friend to the point of traveling with them to Moscow just to watch their performances and the other’s as well. This is Georgi, someone who incorporated Philia in his life - actually he is Philia in its purest essence.

Not only that but he is also one of the characters that talks the most about love during the course of the series; and, considering that he's also a Yuri, nothing more fair than to have him represent one of the Greek words for love. And, just as Yuuri has his own Eros that was denied for a long time, and Yurio searched for his own Agape despite the conflitant and painful feelings, Georgi also has Philia inside him, even though he - maybe - doesn’t know this completely.

During one of the interviews, Yuuri’s voice actor, Toshiyuki Toyonaga, says that he feels some Pathos in Georgi. Pathos, just like the words for love, is also Greek, associated with passion, excess, suffering, feeling and affectionate bonds. It is, as well, a method of rethoric and storytelling, used to instigate emotions from the audience with the use of passion, expressivity and metaphors.

If this definition doesn’t match perfectly with Georgi’s profile please correct us.

It’s in this loyalty and passioun about eveything that surrounds him - his art, the way he expresses himself, his silent obedience over Yakov’s denial to join Victor when he asks them to come have dinner with him, in his observations and admiration of the other skaters during the Rostelecom Cup, that Georgi is Philia.

And Philia can evolve and become something bigger: Storge.

If Philia is the friendship’s love, Storge is the family’s. Here we don’t talk only about blood, but also about the families that we cultivate with the bonds of destiny, of friendships that are lasting, that shape and change your life. After all, it’s not always the blood family that we have present, or maybe they don’t always help us - it’s not uncommon to see people that, alone, build their own families with no blood ties.

People like Victor Nikiforov.

We don’t know Victor’s blood family, but he doesn’t seem to be close to them. We know that Victor’s solitary, that he dedicated over 20 years - his whole life - to figure skating, that he spent more time on ice than anything else.

Curiously, however, it is exactly because of skating that Victor creates bonds, and these bonds are now his real family. And isn’t this one of the main points of his character development over the course of the anime? To go from a solitary star at the top of the world to be now someone happy, loved, with a life and surrounded by people with strong, lasting bonds that he can call family?

His respect for Yakov, his relationship with Yuuri, his friendship with Chris, his fondness for Yurio... And, why not, a bond with Georgi as well? After all, both are Russian, are at the same age range, it’s even said in Georgi’s official profile that he’s Victor’s rinkmate. Considering their ages, it wouldn’t be surprising to see that they know each other for a long time now and that they shared many moments together for many years...

Including when Victor was the Lilac Fairy and had long hair.

Ah, Victor Nikiforov with long hair... The few scenes we got with Vitya with this haircut served as fuel for so many breathtaking fanarts, beautiful crossovers, delightful headcanons and even photoshop over the original screencaps, reimagining the story with Victor still showing his long locks. This platinated Rapunzel causes us all a strange fascination, and we don’t even know the reason why. Or maybe this is what the producers wants us to think.

Why so many scenes, so many flashbacks reminding the spectator of this past? It’s not just to settle the story... It would be way cheaper to just have the characters telling us instead of animating them all, taking money and minutes from the episodes. They’re not there to make the anime longer or fill random holes, they are necessary, especially each and every one of them that contains at least a bit of Victor’s past. We may not know all we want about his life, but these hints are extremely important! In then we have the similarities between young Victor’s apparitions.

He looks realized, happy. In the image above Victor doesn’t carry the weight of his career yet, even thought it’s been some time that he’s skating already. How does the happy face above turns into the evident sadness shown in the Victor that we know now? When did the ice stopped to make him happy? Or was it something else?

What are those ten years hiding from us?

Right at the first seconds of the first episode, in the first step of Yuuri’s story, Victor appears at the rink, a common point of interest between the two skaters, performing his choreography of Stay Close To Me in the most absolute silence. And, between light and shadow, Victor goes from his younghood - with long hair - to adulthood - with short hair - right before Yuuri’s eyes, simbolizing all the life that Yuuri spent admiring his idol.

However, it’s not only Yuuri’s admiration that we can see in this situation. Don’t forget that Yuuri wasn’t the only one that watched him grow, it was the whole world. The whole world could see his evolution on the ice, could witness his changes, even though no one knows at what point he matured enough to pass the blades through his hair. Even though the exact moment is still a secret, in this scene we can see - or not - when this happened: in the shadows. Who also lives in the shadows?

Not only this haircut may be related to Georgi or it can be a secret between them, and that’s why it’s “hidden”. And this secret relationship confirms itself in the free skate songs: Stay Close To Me and A Tales of Sleeping Prince (with a big participation of Serenade For Two - yes, Michele’s song).

Something hit me – at 1:30 am while only half awake so as to take my new puppy out to pee so if there’s typos or whatever – and I had to share.

Why was JJ afraid of Yūri (Yuuri/ Yuri K.) and Phichit?

But Yūri and Phichit? Both these boys are precious cinnamon rolls too good for this world (you know, ignoring Yūri’s lil sex on skates routine and Phichit’s lack of decency when it comes to not posting pictures of his best friend’s coach/future lover hanging off said friend while naked… okay, so maybe they’re sinnamon rolls. My point still stands!) so why is JJ afraid of them? Sure it could be that he see them as strong completion, which fair enough I guess. This is what I’ve always figured.

But then I realized. JJ studied under Ciao Ciao at some point, yes? And we know Yūri’s been with the coach since he was 18-ish while we don’t know exactly how long Phichit’s been skating with him. So what if all three of them had been skating for Celestino at the same time. What if something happened during that time that led to JJ including them in his panic attack?

Like, I’m not saying these boys got dirt on the King, but something sure happened that he hasn’t forgotten.

Remember everyone thought Yuuri was innocent? Yea..... uh- do I have to remind everyone that he was hella drunk at the banquet and basically seduced Viktor by pole dancing, dancing with Viktor and grinding his fucking hips against him while his tie was wrapped around his head, like fucking Naruto style. Also everyone thought he was pining on Viktor BUT we found out that it was actually Viktor!! So Yuuri "Katsudon" Katsuki is a Japanese boy who is a sinnamon roll.

Otayuri: Birthday Wonders

Yurio walked the streets with a wounded yet angry expression, seeing his parent’s house he sighed much sadder.

“I’ll just go home I guess”, he sighed

He opened the door and his parents, Yuuri and Viktor, greeted him with a yell from the kitchen.

“Son, what’s wrong?”, Yuuri asked as he emerged from the kitchen covered in cake frosting

“Otabek said he’d visit me for my birthday…”, Yurio replied sadly

“Oh, you went to the airport?”, Yuuri asked a little worriedly

“Yeah….he never came…”, he replied with small tears threatening to spill from the poor sinnamon roll’s eyes

The two stood there, neither of them spoke until Yuuri broke the sad tension.

“I know you might hit me again but do you want a hug?”, Yuuri asked

He had his arms wide and his eyes closed ready for a painful impact but instead he felt the boy rush into his arms and hug him tightly.

“He probably has an excuse”, Yuuri said patting the blonde boy’s head

“I hope so…he was my first real friend”, Yurio muttered still hugging him

“Go into the living room.”, Yuuri whispered

“Huh? Why?”, the boy asked confused

“Trust me~!”, he said smiling widely

“Okay…”, Yurio said reluctantly as he went to the living room

The boy opened the door to the room and found it to be dark, his hands searched for the light switch and when he finally found it he turned it on and got surprised.

“SURPRISE!!!”, his family and friends yelled in delight

The boy smiled happily while maintaining a very surprised look on his face, everyone was there. Nikolai, Yakov, Lilia, Chris, Phichit, Chris, JJ, and Minami.

“Why are you all here?”, He asked laughing happily

“For your birthday of course”, His grandfather said as his grandson ran to his arms

“Thank you but I’m mostly asking why he’s here!”, Yurio snapped as he pointed at the nervous-looking JJ

“Yurio, be nice!”, Lilia snapped at him as she swung her handbag at him

“Happy birthday to me I guess”, he muttered angrily but still so happy

They began the celebration, they played in the snowy streets, sang songs, opened gifts, and finally IT WAS time for the celebration to end

“Its time for cake, Viktor!”, Yuuri yelled for his husband to come in

Viktor smiled as he entered but Yurio noticed there were two shadows, the boy gasped as he saw his father bring in more than he was expecting.

“BEKA!”, Yurio yelled in delight

In front of him stood Otabek holding a nicely wrapped gift and a birthday cake with a large smile planted on his face.

“Hi Yuri.”, Otabek blushed when he saw his small friend’s HAPPINESS from seeing him

“What are you doing here? I thought you didn’t come…”, Yurio asked happily as he went in front of him

"I wanted to give you a great birthday”, Otabek replied

He put down the gift and cake and hugged Yurio, to his surprise he got more than just a hug. Yurio kissed him on the cheeks with only a small blush on his face

"I love you Beka~!”, Yurio whispered

"I l-love you t-too!”, Otabek stuttered happily while turning red

Everyone cheered, Yurio was now sixteen and much happier than when he won gold, he won more than just the medal he worked hard for, he won Otabek’s heart
