i love the thought of shouto having youngest sibling syndrome in that he's so used to patiently watching other people do things while he waits for his turn that he is just so happy to sit and watch you do something that you enjoy

Love (cannot emphasis how much sarcasm there is in that word) that an official Canadian government response to high cellphone rates is to switch carriers.

Switch it to what? We basically have three companies since one was allowed to eat the forth (with the government saying it wasn't anti-competition and the company eating the other pinky promising they wouldn't jack rates up). Even the smaller companies have to rent infrastructure from the Big Three so there's only so much they can do if that rent costs an arm and a leg.

And that's not touching on how many "small companies" are actually just subsidiaries of the Big Three. You may save $5 but you're still with Telus/Rogers/Bell.

Or that the actual small companies tend to have shit coverage because they don't have the infrastructure available to them and are prevented from getting it. Or their traffic is throttled in favour of the Big Three's customers. Or both.

Or that they're extremely regional thus aren't an option for a huge chunk of Canada's population.

We have no true options and the government has shown time and again that they're fine with monopolies, in multiple industries, and don't care when said monopolies jack up prices to make shareholders and the c-suite more money at the expense of everyone else. At most there will be a verbal slap on the wrist and a giftcard for $25 that people have to register for, for a decade and a half of price gouging.

It's not talked a whole lot about outside the country from what I've seen and heard but Canada is a country of monopolies. A handful of companies own nearly everything, every province has a family or two that owns a hell of a lot (Nova Scotia is basically owned by one family at this point), and our government ignores it. Even the branch that is supposed to be against monopolies is fine with mergers and takeovers in most cases.

Because, you know, the company said it totally wouldn't use consumers' lack of options to increase prices.

#canada #so much of our infrastructure and critical construction such as housing #has been pawned off for decades to private companies #and i forgot to mention one (1) family owns the bridge that is a major international corridor between canada and the us #which is apparently fine even though they fought tooth and nail to stop a bridge they don't own from being built #like our housing crisis can be traced back to the government deciding to stop building public housing in the 90s #because they figured private developers would pick up the slack #affordable apartments don't bring in much money so we got decades of cheap-ass 'luxury condos' instead #and once airbnb became a thing we got entire buildings with units <300sqft #and of course when the party in charge rotates between conservatives and neolibs nothing changes and that can gets kicked down the road #and keeps getting kicked until something collapses and they see the chance to fully privatize an industry #something similar is happening to our healthcare system too #it has been left to languish for years/decades with funding freezes and cuts #and private companies are quick to jump in and get the government stamp of approval to do [thing] that the public system clearly can't do #when [thing] would absolutely be possible if it was actually funded and/or staffed #so many communities were cut off when greyhound closed up shop because there's no government inter-city transportation #we lost internet/banking/cell service/etc nation-wide because one of the big three decided to push an update to live without redundancies #and it bugged and took the entire company's network down #even the government agency that demands major companies have a backup on a different network was taken down because they ignored that #and they got a deal if they kept their backup with rogers while their main network was also rogers #so they couldn't even make an emergency statement or anything about it #half my province also lost all digital infrastructure because it's a private company and making a redundancy line would mean smaller bonuse #it's just so bad #joke all you want about how canada is nice and friendly #but you are wrong and it's hell if you actually live here #the only reason canada is seen as nice is because it's hard to not seem like the better option when the us is your neighbour #and because of decades of pr work to make canada seem friendly and nice and not at all problematic #in some countries you actually have to try to hide you're canadian because of how much we colonize and the damage we do to other countries #yes these tags have derailed from the post but ugh #i take major issue with people who insist canada is nice and has never done anything wrong

Ooh why don’t you recommend the glossy topcoat from holo taco?

I just don't think the quality is very nice!! the regular glossy taco has a persistent habit of clumping, bubbling, and becoming stringy! the super glossy taco contains toluene, which, for me, the harm potentially being done isn't worth the quick-dry benefit of the formula. So they're both products I'd recommend skipping! I also think that holo taco is in a unique position, as a brand with a visible personality behind it, and while I think most of their formulas are really very good, people are more willing to sugarcoat their opinions on the less-good products, the way you'd soften negative opinions toward a Person rather than a Brand

#If you want a top coat rec from me then I think the ella + mila In A Rush top coat performs great #and it doesn't contain some of those more harmful ingredients that I try to avoid in nail polish #the brush is round and skinny tho and I prefer a wide flat brush #so if you are picky abt that in the way I am #I'd recommend transferring it into a different bottle! and the holo taco bottles w the wide flat brush work well lol #sergle answers #nailposting

I think I just realized that in the end and despite uh. y’know the everything you can imagine, I actually prefer the drama version of guardian over the book version, just because the drama version of weilan sort of Hit Differently for me personally on a lot of levels?

because in the drama it’s not even so much that shen wei fell in love with kunlun/zhao yunlan (though god knows he did that too don’t get me wrong lol) -- it’s that zhao yunlan gifted him the idea of a future worth having. and to shen wei zhao yunlan is that future -- the message and the messenger.

what if, in your darkest moments, the actual irrefutable voice of the future came to you and told you ‘I know it’s hard to believe right now, but it will get better. there will be something more than this someday; this pain isn’t all there is. it will be worth it’??? what then??????? would one have no recourse but to venture into the precarious waters of hope forevermore?????????????? and then afterwards you realize the future could come to you to tell you those things with love because due to timey wimey reasons you gave those words and that love to them first when THEY needed it, without even thinking about it, just because it was true. “You’re worth it, and the world is worth it”. I am losing my mind.

I mean yeah if I were bb!shen wei who’d only known struggle and loneliness and war and then suddenly the most beautiful man you’ve ever seen turned up out of the blue one day and looked at me as if I were the single dearest, most precious thing in the universe and promised me life would one day hold so much more than pain and he can prove it, he IS the proof… I think I would have no choice but to fall inconsolably in love with him forever too what the fuck

for illustrative purposes, you understand

before zhao yunlan shen wei doesn't even have a proper name, just like... a description. he's made himself a tool of grim utility for a worthy purpose, and the people around him have all just let him because they need him to be that. until one person finally came along and asked him to take the mask off (”You’re a person, not a knife” oh my god ;___________;) and saw him, and in the act of being seen and returning that gaze he could become someone, could suddenly conceptualize life as something more than constant struggle. I mean zhao yunlan is literally his introduction to what's sweet in the world, the show is not being subtle about it. (and in fact goes about showing it in the single most suggestive way I can imagine short of having a dildo or possibly actual fellatio going on on screen, which I hugely respect and admire them for artistically)

(and then there’s this whole Situation from the POV of zhao yunlan, who -- as he confesses in the car scene where they pretend they’re talking about poor zhu hong’s feelings (lol) -- has reached the conclusion he’s simply not made for love; he can’t get it right no how hard he tries and it just hurts people, so everyone’s better off if he stops striving for it. and then imagine finding out that once, when it mattered most, with the person who mattered most, you did get your love across so well it kept them going for tEN THOUSAND YEARS and then beyond. he made shen wei feel so loved and so secure in the existence of goodness in the universe that he has enough hope for the both of them even at the end of the show, when everything's gone wrong and all hope should be lost -- but it isn't, because their lives really truly touched each other and that stays, even beyond death. death can claim so many things, but not that they loved each other, that they will love each other no matter where they go. and while it's left up in the air in the show itself the structure of the story says that they WILL meet again, because that's already the shape the story is told in, that is the pattern. shen wei's hope is not unaccompanied by proof, and now they're both in on it. what do you do with your brain after that other than just idk go lie down for a century, that’s certainly how I feel right now.)

the way he gazes after him like a man softly surprised to have found the answer to the question of life, the universe and everything in an unexpeced kitchen drawer or something. god

like this is a depth and richness of thematic meaning this trash show should not be able to support and yet!!! between the horrid cgi nonsense and bizarre pacing and stilted dialogue this is what the story is about and it’s so FUCKING good what the hell (personally I prefer the pacing of the relationship in the drama -- they spent all their good pacing budget on that to the detriment of every other aspect of the show, so thank fuck it’s the most important part haha). I do really enjoy the book too but it doesn't make me borderline incoherent with emotion quite like this

#I am in emotions don't look at me!!!!!!#weilan #guardian #shen wei #zhao yunlan #zhenhun c drama #the car scene is actually on my top 3 scenes in the whole drama I think. it hit me like a boot in the solar plexus #though anytime zhao yunlan lets the mask fall for a few moments is of course like ice cream for my id #I have a type I cannot help it #also I do love young shen wei in the drama so much. while he is so much younger and wide-eyed and inexperienced #you still get that immediately recognizable sense of his intellect? he changes over the years #but the way he observes the world and the way he thinks remains entirely characteristic the whole way #(actually I think the drama did a really good job of preserving that both for him and for zhao yunlan; I know I keep ragging on the writing #but it DID actually do a great job with these core things even while frequently stumbling over the surface stuff lol)#add that to my overarching 'if you nail the emotional arc people will let you get away with so much shit elsewhere' writing craft theory
