Avengers Polycule thoughts are keeping me up.

The Avengers Polycule, like the MCU, begins with Tony Stark (and James Rhodes).

Rhodes and Tony’s schedules used to line up where they were spending more down time with each than without (university). As their lives and the schedules grew increasingly more hectic, they made the mutual decision to step things down a notch, still allowed to be affectionate, still allowed to be in love and call each other boyfriends, but there was a pressure taken off of them to be perfect boyfriends. They still loved each other, but they showed it in a more casual way. I’m writing the fic for this, and I promise it makes sense to me. Like... Maybe they haven’t seen each other in a month, and spoken not very much in that time, but Tony’s still giving Rhodey a “glad to see you” kiss and means it. They’re still together, but there’s less obligation to be present physically. They become emotional home bases for one another. “Maybe we can’t go on a date tonight, but here’s a cute picture of a cat I saw in the street today. You’re welcome, I know it’s a treasure.” (Tony) “Buy yourself a pizza from me tonight. You deserve it. Good job on your presentation.” (Rhodey)

Tony meets Pepper and Rhodey immediately proposes something more open. Tony thinks it’s because Rhodey wants to date Pepper, which, fair. Rhodey does it because he can see that Tony and Pepper are going to get along great, and he doesn’t want Tony to be Tony and screw it up for the sake of his relationship with Rhodes.

He still screws it up for a while, but it’s not for the sake of his relationship with Rhodes, so it almost works.

Tony and Pepper are serious, like, serious serious. It scares Tony at first, just a little because he expected it to be like with Rhodes. Where he was in love, but like... casually. There is nothing casual about Pepper, and when he tells that to Rhodes, Rhodes has to hold his tongue to keep from saying, “Obviously you idiot,” because it’s not helpful and also might come across as more confrontational than he means it to be.

Pepper demands exclusivity that Rhodey never did. “I don’t care if you have relationship with other people, but you’re not going to sleep around just for the sake of it if you want to be with me.”

Tony agrees to those terms readily. Who else does he need when he has Pepper and Rhodey anyway?

The answer is he needs a wizard. A stupidly handsome wizard with great cheekbones, blue eyes, and so much sass Tony could kill him as soon as kiss him.

It both surprises him and pleases him that apparently Pepper needs a wizard too.

With Stephen, things are great. Tony’s had two successful and happy relationships for years, but the triad experience is something new entirely. The dynamic that bringing Stephen into he and Pepper’s relationship gives him is something Tony wouldn’t trade the world for. It’s just his luck that he gets to have it twice.

Maybe luck is the wrong word. Perhaps two genius heads put themselves together to woo the former Winter Soldier into their bed and their relationship. Pepper’s at capacity and not really interested, but she does her best to encourage them. (She tries to keep quiet about the fact that she’s the one who made the subtle nudge at the two of them to go after what they obviously wanted, but when they get too proud of themselves she can’t help but mention it, just to humble them a little. Bucky is amused.

Tony has two triads, and one Rhodey bear when Morgan comes along. Bucky likes Morgan, likes the idea of children, but isn’t really down for raising them. (Stephen and Tony had kind of assumed that if Bucky ever did do the raising kids thing it’d be with Steve, so they’re not surprised or offended.) All of Tony’s partners love Morgan to death, and would probably kill for her, and that’s all he could have asked for.

His little family isn’t so little anymore, and when their various extended partners get together it’s a pretty large group. (Mostly because Steve is a whore, but also because Tony is an unapologetic romantic.)

When Tony finally gets to recline on the front porch of his lake house, his child and nesting partners are near by, and Bucky and Rhodes are just a phone call and a portal away. He’s content, and he’s at capacity. There’s nothing more he could ask for.

Sure, four times the partners also means four times the disagreements, but what’s a relationship without some strife? Some hurdles to jump that will ultimately bring them closer together? Even on bad days, Tony is grateful for the people in his life, and for the love they give him and allow him to give them. He’s grateful for his daughter, and his partners, and every single misstep that brings him to the front porch of a lakehouse, sipping lemonade and surrounded by his loved ones.

Midnight ramblings (WinterIronStrange)

Okay, so, I'm all for winteriron ot3s (except the one), but I have such a hard time imagining winterironstrange. Like, Tony and Stephen? Neat, I could see that. Tony and Bucky? OTP for a reason. But Strange and Bucky??? I really can't imagine any sort of romantic or sexual relationship between them, and any friendship would probably be based mostly on exposure.

BUT that said, I still really like the idea of these three together in some form or another. So, I tried to parse it out how it could work.

(rambling under the cut)

Tony would be the core in their relationship, as he is what initially tied all of them together. I'm thinking maybe he and Stephen are sort of life partners - not necessarily romantic but still kind of? Like a package deal, twin souls kinda thing. Except they also sleep together sometimes? If you want to be friends (or more) with one you'd better be prepared to deal with the other as well.

Then you have Bucky, who is all the way gone on Tony. And Tony, who is seriously crushing on Bucky. And Tony is really awkward about it because he has no intention of leaving Stephen for any reason but he really, really wants Bucky in his life as well? Like, as more than friends? So Tony is confused.

Bucky however is really chill about it, he knew going in that Strange would be part of the package. And the guy wants nothing but the best for Tony, so Bucky figures they'll get along splendidly. He tries to keep his flirting with Tony limited to only when Stephen is also around, so they'll know he knows what he's getting into.

Stephen doesn't really mind Bucky either, but he keeps his eyes on him for a while to make sure of his intentions. Until he gets tired of the longing looks and lovelorn sighs whenever these two are in the same room together, and ends up rolling his eyes before he practically shoves them at each other and gives them his blessing.

Tony is still confused.

Bucky tells him to talk to Stephen, so he does. Then he talks to Bucky, and then they all three talk, and it ends up in a strange sort of dynamic which is basically Bucky dating Tony whose husband is Stephen. And because they end up spending so much time together, Bucky and Stephen end up caring for each other as well, beyond their connection to Tony.

(One day Tony shuffles up from his workshop all sleep deprived from an inventing binge and comes across Bucky and Stephen in the kitchen, talking together and laughing about something, and Tony is just so touched and happy at the sight that he just starts crying. He blames his lack of sleep.)

(Sometimes he still can't believe he gets to keep both of them, and then tears up some more.)

Bucky and Stephen would probably have this really weird relationship where Stephen refuses to call Bucky anything but James and Bucky only ever calls him Strange, or Doc. They have this thing, where Stephen gives Bucky books he thinks he ought to read (that they usually end up discussing after Bucky's done), and Bucky responds by finding small gifts of the "I saw this and thought of you"-variety to give him back, and they just keep getting more and more outlandish. Stephen won't admit it but he has an entire cabinet filled with the tiny figurines and miscellaneous trinkets that Bucky has given him.

Bucky and Tony are the cuddliest of them, and are constantly touching if they have the opportunity. Sometimes one or both of them drag Stephen with them as well, but it is not as important for him even if it is nice sometimes.

Stephen and Tony have a near telepathic connection -- they always seem to know what the other is thinking, and are known to finish each others sentences. Bucky dubs it "creepy as hell" whenever they do it when he is around. Tony has a hard time in the beginning adjusting to the level of verbal communication required in his relationship with Bucky, but they manage.

(Bucky also has an uncanny ability to talk both FRIDAY and the Cloak of Levitation into helping him with pranks. Especially in people being rude to Tony or Stephen. They're all kind of petty like that.)

All three of them would be super pissed if any of the other two got hurt in battle. The first time Bucky loses it when someone takes a shot at Stephen surprises all three of them. In the end, they figure it makes sense; they're family now after all.

How winterironstrange gets together

Bucky wants some vanity work done on the arm, so he goes to Tony. Mostly he wants the star gone and the metal not to be so shiny. Tony is happy to oblige and doesn’t mention upgrades, which Bucky is intensely grateful for.

He waxes poetic to Stephen and Pepper that night about the piece of beautiful engineering attached to the supersoldier, flip flopping back and forth between admiration and over empathizing with the torture Bucky had had to endure to get it.

Eventually Stephen laid down and pulled Tony’s head down against his chest and Pepper laid on his other side and stroked his hair with soft even strokes until he fell asleep.

Bucky doesn’t go out fighting anymore, focusing mostly on his recovery and integration into the 21st century, but sometimes Steve, giant fucking moron, does the kinds of things giant fucking morons do and Bucky has to get his ass back in the field to back him up.

One of these times, Bucky gets cursed and Tony calls in Stephen. Stephen and Tony bicker the entire time while Stephen consults his books and removes the curse from Bucky as quickly as he can.

Pepper notices Bucky’s starry eyed gaze and mentions to Stephen that he and Tony might try branching out now that their relationship was so stable. It might be fun to start dating again.

Stephen shrugs it off, but Pepper has already planted the idea in his head. It takes root and sprouts a couple of weeks later.

“Do you think you want another boyfriend?” Stephen asked, laying across Tony’s lap on the couch while Pepper is at the Malibu office.

Tony took a second to consider it, hand worked beneath the zip of Stephen’s hoodie. “I mean, I would be open to it. Do you have someone in mind.”

Stephen bites his lip.

“They’re trying to date you, Bucky.” Steve said while he was in the gym, working on the heavy bag. Bucky had only been dating Steve for a few months, and they were still rather casual as Bucky worked through his tendency to mother Steve, but he had still felt the most comfortable coming to Steve about the sudden uptick of attention from the genius and the wizard. “Bruce and them have a pool going about whether or not you’ll notice. Guess Jane won.” He stepped back from the bag and considered his best friend’s face. “You considering it now?”

Bucky was.

“Are you flirting with me?” Bucky asked point blank while sitting in the Avengers communal kitchen, an addition made by Tony after both Steve and Natasha had commented on missing it in the compound. Tony paused from where he was pouring his coffee, but Stephen continued drinking his own cup, aided by magic to stabilize it in his shaking hands.

“We both are.” Stephen said, when Tony took too long to answer. “If you give us the word we’ll stop, no questions asked.

“What if I don’t want you to stop?” Bucky asked and Stephen smirked.

“Tony, shut up,” Bucky gasped while Stephen kissed his neck. Tony had been babbling non-stop since the door to Bucky’s room in the compound had closed. Tony’s front was pressed solidly to Bucky’s back, his hands stroking Stephen’s hair and holding Bucky’s hip.

Stephen pulled away to look at Tony over Bucky’s shoulder. “I’m sure you can find better uses for your mouth, Anthony.”

Tony grinned, “As the doctor orders.”

Tony and Stephen sat next to each other in the middle of the overlong, Tony’s head resting on Stephen’s shoulder. Sitting on either side of them were Bucky and Pepper, their legs draped over their respective boyfriends.

“They said two triads would never work.” Pepper laughed, sitting further up to offer her wine glass to Bucky for a toast.

Bucky sat up and clinked his glass of red to her glass of white. “They didn’t know what they were talking about.

Tony looked up at Stephen and smiled. “I love it when our metamores love each other.”

Stephen kissed the top of his head and wrapped an arm around Tony’s shoulders to bring him closer. “I know.”

“Stop moving, I’m comfortable.” Bucky said, with a kick of his heels to Tony’s tilting body.

“Yes dear.” Tony blew a kiss at him and both Stephen and Pepper laughed.
