What I Read This Month: February
As the end of the month is approaching, I thought it would be nice to wrap things up by looking back on the books I’ve read over the past four weeks. Let’s go!
‘Girl, Interrupted’ by Susanna Kaysen
*tw- mental illness*
Whilst it’s only around 200 pages long, this book packs a punch. It documents Susanna Kaysen’s time spent in a mental hospital as a young adult in the 60’s, depicting the cruel misunderstanding and mistreatment of mentally ill youth. I’ve read a few books about characters with mental health problems, and this was by far the rawest, most vulnerable account I’ve come across. Gripping from the very beginning, I finished this after only three days
‘Before the coffee gets cold’- Toshikazu Nawaguchi
Hm. I have very mixed feelings on this book. It tells the story of a mysterious coffee shop in Tokyo, where customers can request to travel back in time (permitted that they follow an irritatingly strict set of rules laid out by the owner). Split into four ‘acts’, it focuses in turn on the journies into the past taken by four of the characters. I loved the second and fourth parts, but hated the first and third. There were some really touching moments of tenderness, but also a lot of missed opportunities and poor characterisation choices. Overall, a decent read, though! I’ve heard somewhere it was based on a play, which makes MUCH more sense. It would definitely be better performed on a stage
‘History of Wolves’ by Emily Fridlund
... Wow. This book shook me UP. Set in rural Minnesota, we follow Linda and her new neighbours, the Gardeners- a mother and her little boy, Paul. When Paul’s mother asks Linda to babysit, she doesn’t think much of it and agrees to look after him, but soon discovers something is very wrong with the family when Paul’s father enters the scene. Fridlund’s style is just gorgeous, and she touches on some very deep, dark issues. I won’t go into further detail for fear of spoiling it, but if you read just one book this year- make it this one

is it ok to write stories and make pictures of the Mystery kids? if so is there a plot line for mystery kids or is it a monster of the week kind of plot line?
Of course! We don't own the idea of Mystery Kids, we are just a group making an animatic episode about the crossover. The whole fandom is just people making up their own pictures/fics/ect.
The first animatic episode was created by a bunch of people that like the concept. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgAwamjVtzQ&t=2163s&ab_channel=WirtM
And now we are a different group of people that want to add onto what the first group did.
Everyone is free to do and make whatever they want in the fandom. There isn't exactly one plot line since everyone's take of the mystery kids is different! I guess the animatic we are working on is monster of the week style just because it takes so long to make one episode it makes sense to make a complete story in one episode.

Will I Relieve Their Mistakes? || Self Para
Oliver was alone in the small apartment he now shared with his older brother, enjoying his day off work by sitting on the couch in his pajamas, watching a Batman marathon. His eyes were nearly shut as he began the descent into unconsciousness, when the doorbell rang. "I'm not home" he mumbled, tossing the blanket he'd draped over himself away and brushing his clothes off, hoping the visitor wasn't anyone important, as he figured he didn't have time to change. "No, I won't buy whatever you're selling..." he began as he flung open the door, immediately stopping himself and staring at the sight that lay before his tired eyes. "No...." his voice came out just below a whisper as his heart sunk. "No, no, no, no, this.....it can't....". Bright blue eyes tinged with shock looked into those of a girl he hardly even remembered.
"She's yours" the high pitched blonde voiced "And she's your responsibility". Before Oliver knew it, the petite girl was placing a baby in his arms. When shock faded slightly, it was replaced with contempt "Wait.....you're just...leaving? Don't you think she needs a mother?" The girl simply rolled her eyes, flipping him off and tossing a baby bag in the room, before turning and strutting away "Try not to make her as fucked up as you, yeah?" she yelled behind her as she left.
Oliver's mind was shattered as he looked down at the sleeping baby girl in his arms. She had his face, he noted silently, a tear falling on to the blanket she was swaddled in as panic swept over his mind. "I'm......oh, god..."
