Hi Betts,
How do I become the kind of person that can write 50-100k in a month?
anon, i am so fascinated by the phrasing of this question. not "how do i write 50-100k in a month" but "how do i become the kind of person that can write 50-100k in a month."
writing 50k in a month seems easier than changing who you are in order to write 50k in a month. because once you do it, you then become that thing; you don't become the thing and then do it. if that makes sense.
to write 50k in a month, what you really have to be is the sort of person who can write very badly for a very long time. that's the key to high word counts: shitty writing. that's also the downside to high word counts: you don't keep the shitty writing. you write 100k in a month, you end up with tennis elbow and maybe a couple thousand words that'll make it to the next draft.
don't get me wrong, i think things like nanowrimo are great. every once in a while, it can be good to set a high word count goal and meet it. but only every once in a while, when you plan for it and set your mind to it, and accept the discomfort of spending a whole month prioritizing quantity over quality. word count is only one metric by which to measure progress.
so i guess my answer is that to be the kind of person who writes 50k in a month, you have to be the kind of person who makes a plan to write 50k in a month, the kind of person to see it through, and the kind of person who, if you don't meet your goal, tries it again later.
and lastly, word count is not actually about writing. it's about sentence-making. writing is the umbrella term we use to describe what is actually about a hundred different smaller tasks. sentence-making is just one of them. practicing sentence-making won't make you a better writer, just a faster one. you begin to internalize sentence structures and paragraphing, and then it becomes easier to deploy them, because you don't have to think about things like "should i make this a clause or a new sentence." that work eventually becomes less conscious and you're free to render the stuff in your head in a more intuitive way, that you later revise in a more intentional one.

Okay if you write. Listen to me.
Set a daily word goal. Not a big one, because you won't be able to make it every day, you will likely procrastinate and not write at all, or feel guilty about not making the goal.
Set a small goal. Set a tiny goal if you have to.
400? Amazing. 100? Wonderful. 50? Heck yes. One fucking sentance? VALID.
Mine is 200 words a day. I haven't felt particularly inspired recently, but over the past month I've written at least 200 words nearly every day.
Which leads me into my next point: if you have to skip a day THAT'S OKAY. There will come a day when you feel really inspired and write 2000 words, and you'll make it up.
Sometimes I write 200 words and then my creativity runs out, but sometimes I sit down and write a whole lot.
Since I started doing this, my story has progressed so fast, and I feel like this is probably going to be the first full-length novel I finish.
Obviously this method isn't for everyone, but I recommend you try it. If it doesn't work for you that's fine! Find something that does.

for all my writer friends:
whatever your word count, it's okay.
a small word count means you got your words across quickly and sweetly, while a large word count means more content for your readers.
sometimes chapters are big, sometimes they're small. whatever it is, it doesn't dictate your value.
you're doing so well, keep it up :D

I saw your DD graph asking for other ideas, so... if you still have any desire to do further Dracula graphs I'd be curious to see how the word count per character breaks down (not how much they speak but how much they write. Adding all their diary entries together, etc.). Obviously Mina wins by default from having typed up the whole novel but outside of that detail, how much did each person author?
Thank you so much for this ask! What an interesting data set this one is! Lots of unexpected information.
So first off, if you just want to visualize the author breakdown, ta-dahhhh!
Tumblr media
Seward was staunchly in the lead, talking his head off and burning through those wax recording drums like no ones business. Poor Mina for having to transcribe it all. In total his words made up 39.3% of Dracula. Nearly 40%!
Seward unsurprisingly had the most individual entries overall at 47, and had the longest streak for being the narrator in an entry at 10 days (09/02 - 09/11) with Mina following right behind at 9 days (08/10 - 08/19)
Mina surprisingly was 3rd overall both in word count and number of entries. She wasn't even in the top 3 for most words in a day which is as follows.
1 - Seward October 3rd - 9942 words
2 - Seward September 29th - 7206 words
3 - Jonathan October 3rd - 5944 words
Van Helsing only had 9 entries total but still came in number 4 for word count, in front of Lucy. It's interesting to note that the amount a person writes doesn't correlate to the amount of time they are being written about/appear. Which is why Arthur and Quincey don't even beat out the newspaper clippings for words, lol.
There are lots of authors we only hear from a single time, like Sister Agatha. So I've decided to make a small fry pie as well. (Authors under ~500 words)
Tumblr media
The captain of the Demeter and Van Helsing both had more days written than Lucy! Though I didn't break up number of entries, like when the log of the Demeter had 3 or 4 on one day or Lucy wrote a letter and in her diary.
If there is any data I haven't presented here that you're interested in feel free to tag me or shoot me an ask like this lovely person did!

Hello!
I’m here with half good and maybe bad news(?) So the last Character & Word count were in fact very inaccurate by a LOT. I didn’t realize I have a bunch of extra stuff and drafts of the story beforehand in it so twine included that…Um, so the updated and more accurate one will be included.
And I’ve decided to also do Female Mc’s and the story text will be different because of gender at scenes as well. So, Male Versions of the Ro’s will be made and depending on the Ro so will be the backstory/personality by a little bit. And to be quite honest, I’m not sure how I’m going to write crushes especially same-gender ones mostly because I don’t want to be cancelled and I personally have no experience so, it will be difficult.
Sorry, this is long but, I have a feeling I won’t be posting a lot unless it’s profiles or asks.
I’m a very much newbie and rookie to writing, it’s really not great but, I do have ideas and I want to share them, that’s why these are here. So, I would very much appreciate tips, and help whether that be story plot, rewording, or just spelling and grammar. And I’m an avid want a dash of romance not the main focus because I cringe A lot type of reader, the same type of writer as well. So advice on writing romance and dialogue is a must, that’s why I’m planning on the romance to be a more minor part.
I also realized I should probably focus on finishing writing the first part of the demo I’m planning to release in one of the upcoming months or weeks. And also, post something about the personalities the Mc can have. ❤️
Thank you for reading my rambling and being interested in my if.💗
~~~
Character Count: 51553 (just the story not including profiles, glossary or world lore)
Word Count: 8567
Features(first part is same bottom is new):
-Meeting the Mentor and Homie(By having a flashback) and setting their gender
-Customizing Mc including hair color, length, skin tone, name, nickname, petname, gender
-Finding out about your Father and seeing a new side to your mother
-Age from 16 to 20(idk if that's significant-)
-Choosing a personality type from Diplomat, Charmer, Fighter, Scholar, Spiritual, and Deceiver
-Choosing to be a early bird or night owl
-Go on an errand and have your Mentor kidnap you casually
-Profiles in-game are done technically though I have to add actual descriptions of their personalities and skills but, the ones here are currently way more detailed
-Are you more expressive or expressionless?(will be applied differently depending on personality)
-Will receive something from your Mentor
-Start your Journey To Nadripur and stuff
-Find out the Mc’s eyecolors
-Learn some Banglish(Bengali-English)
-Find out more about the world you live in
-Either be as rude as possible to a old man or attempt to be less rude to a older lady(Mentor)
-Choosing to be more decisive or indecisive
UA’s Ice Queen
————————
Summary: Y/N is known as the ice queen of UA, and not just for her quirk. She’s ice cold to any and everyone, with a few exceptions.
Characters: Tamaki Amajiki, black!fem!reader
Word count: 406
Warnings: none just fluff all around for Tamaki 💜🐙
Pairing: Tamaki Amajiki x black!fem!reader (established relationship)
Note: Y/N has a twa (Teeny Weeny Afro) in this piece.
Note 2: This piece for Tamaki is long overdue but I hope you all enjoy it!
Tag list/mutuals list: @olenoname @mysticpisces
————————————
Underneath a beach umbrella, Y/N sat, content to scroll on her phone mostly her feeds for Instagram and Pinterest. The weather was humid which made her hairstyle perfect for it. Lifting her eyes from the screen of her phone, just for a brief moment, she could see everyone playing in the water.
Even Tamaki.
She could easily pick him out of the crowd filled with women, men, children, and other students from UA who also came to the beach for a rest and relaxation day.
He was with Mirio and Nejire.
The three of them deserved a day like this. No stress. Just fun.
Ping! New message!
💜🐙Tamaki🐙💜: I can feel you staring.
Y/N: Do you want me to look away?
💜🐙Tamaki🐙💜: No!
💜🐙Tamaki🐙💜 is typing…
💜🐙Tamaki🐙💜: What I mean is, I like it when your attention is focused on me.
Y/N: Then I’ll make sure to give you all of my undivided attention later.
💜🐙Tamaki🐙💜 is typing…
💜🐙Tamaki🐙💜: Y/N-chan! It’s Nejire! I think you broke Tamaki!
Y/N: I’ll come down there and reboot him.
💜🐙Tamaki🐙💜: And when you get down here, can you make some ice for us? Pleaseee?
Y/N was known as UA’s ice queen not just because of her natural cold disposition but also because the ice that formed when she used her quirk could last for hours because of how unique it was. Which was perfect for this humid weather where the sun could easily melt regular ice.
💜🐙Tamaki🐙💜: Pretty please! Think of your kouhai! 🥺
Y/N might be cold but she was by no means heartless.
Y/N: Alright. Alright, I’m on my way.
💜🐙Tamaki🐙💜: Yay! 😃
Standing up and getting out from underneath the umbrella and stretching as she felt the warmth of the sun from above and the sand beneath her feet, Y/N began to make her way down the beach.
This really was a day of relaxation.
Skullgirl!MC
--------------------
For @yoraely
Who asked: oh very lovely mod a, may i humbly request a skullgirl reader with malleus, rook, vil, and leona? (feel free to remove characters <3), they look like theyre dead, but they mostly have powers over bones and skulls and blue flames, sometimes they get carried by their large skeleton buddy as well <3
-------------------------------------------------------
POV: First Person
Characters: Malleus Draconia, Rook Hunt, Vil Schoenheit, Leona Kingscholar, female!skullgirl!reader
Pairing: Malleus, Rook, Vil, Leona x female!skullgirl!reader (separate)
Word Count: 300
------------------------------
~Malleus finds your magic to be the most interesting thing that he's ever seen. He asks many questions. How does it work? How does it feel for you to use it? Does it harm you? All of which you answer with a patient smile, knowing that Malleus’ questions are not malicious but from his genuine curiosity.~
~Rook definitely adds to your collection of skulls. He can watch you and what you do with them via your magic, all day and not get bored.~
~Vil out of all of the boyfriends you've had, which isn't a lot, is the one who's the most worried about your appearance. After being in a relationship with him for so long, you know that his urging to get you to eat something and to develop a skincare routine is out of genuine concern for you and once you explain that your appearance is how you naturally look and that yes, you're fine, Vil doesn't worry as much. But he still keeps an eye out for you. Just in case.~
~Leona doesn't think he'll ever get used to seeing the blue flames that appear whenever you use your magic or the fact that you ride around on a large skeleton. But the looks from the students at NRC whenever they see you riding your skeleton friend will never get old.~
I’m gonna throw this here because like… I keep track of it anyway and because I’m proud and I want to share it somewhere:
In January of 2024 I wrote (according to my logs) approx. 21,484 words across my various projects!!
Which is a personal improvement from November and December 2023, where I barely managed to hit 15,000 words in either month :D
What's Your Average Word Count When You Write?
NaNoWriMo can make us feel like we're never writing enough, especially if we're falling behind the word counts we set for ourselves.
The reality is that everyone has different writing speeds, especially when they change between story themes and genres. Some of your stories will make you feel fired up more than others.
Let's pull the curtain back on the average word count we all write in our writing sessions (specifically outside of NaNoWriMo).
Be gentle with yourself when you sit down to write! We all have our productive days and our more challenging writing sessions.
Ask yourself what you have the energy for, then sit down and do what feels best for your physical and mental energy.
Psst—I typically write between 100-800 words or two pages (maybe 15-30 minutes on average) per session. But if I'm low energy, I'm happy just adding a few sentences!
The people have spoken! Here is the total length of the remaining Dracula Daily entries!
scroll if you don’t want to know - I am unsure about tagging this as a spoiler as it only relates to the story in a meta way
Total, the journey takes us 189 days, 111 of those have entries (58.73%)
We have 34 days left until the last entry November 7th, 22 of those days have entries (64.71%)
There are only 3 breaks left, from 10/07 to 10/10, 10/12 to 10/14, and 10/18 to 10/23
Bram’s longest on streak was 19 days - 09/17 to 10/06
Bram’s longest off streak was  11 days - 06/06 to 06/16
The longest remaining day is Sunday 10/30 at 4,983 words (10 to 20 pages ~30% of the longest entry 10/03)
There are 29,117 words left till the end (There has been 131,000 so far)
Google says it takes around 5 minutes to read 1,000 words
October 31st has 420 words (yes really)
Let me know if there’s any more data you want! I love making graphs!
Toastystats: F/F, F/M, and M/M on AO3
I'm starting to post my deep dive stats that started out as me looking into "F/F vs. M/M on AO3" -- it has turned out to be really useful and interesting to include F/M in most of these analyses (I'd like to also look more at other categories eventually; see further discussion about nonbinary characters). Here are some of the topics I'll be covering: Length, Ratings & Smut, Dark content, Tags & tropes, Growth rate, and Case studies of parallel-ish ships of different genders.
You can read the intro & fanwork length chapter now, and more will be posted soon! You can also listen to me discuss a bunch of the data on the latest @fansplaining episode, Femstats February.
Below are some excerpts of the fanwork length chapter -- but please click through to AO3 for elaboration/clarification/corrections, as well as for descriptions of the images.
Tumblr media
(Terminology: "F/F-focused" means I filtered out every other relationship category else except "Gen," so as to remove ambiguity, and similar for F/M- and M/M-focused.)
A few observations:
These breakdowns are a lot more similar than I’d expected. There are differences, but they’re not overwhelming. It’s not like F/F is mostly just drabbles.
F/F does have the highest proportion of short fic, followed by F/M, and then M/M...
But the long fic end of the scale isn’t what I expected at all! M/M is the least likely to have works over 50K words (this graph doesn't actually show the decimal points due to lack of space, but M/M only has 2.0% of its works above 50K words, while F/F has 2.4% over 50K). And F/M is the most likely to have [works over 50K words]!
....Next, I wanted to look at reader response to long fic.... First, let's look at the word count breakdown for the works with the most kudos...:
Tumblr media
We can see that, probably unsurprisingly, many of the works that receive the most kudos are long -- but I was surprised how strong that bias is. Nearly half of these popular works in the F/F and F/M categories are over 50K+ words (I -- or someone else -- should follow up by further subdividing the "over 50K" category, but I haven't done so yet; for now I only used the same word count buckets that I used previously.). Surprising to me is that M/M has a lot more shorter works that get a lot of kudos; only around 1/3 of the M/M works with the most kudos have over 50K words. I'd be curious to hear any theories about why this is.
....Okay, so lots of popular fic is long -- not too surprising. But now let's flip things around. instead of looking at how long popular fic is, let's look at how much reader feedback long fic gets, and see if any category clearly gets the most or least feedback.
For this, I took a very specific slide of [long fic]: works 100K words to 101K words long. I did that because I wanted to compare long fic of the same length across the different categories. But these specific numbers are therefore not accurate for most definitions of "long fic," and should not be taken too seriously -- hence the asterisks on the following slides (Edit to clarify: I did also look at a couple other long slices to check that these general patterns seem to hold... but I haven't confirmed it for all long fic). I did this just to try to get a rough sense of the ranking or the categories. Let's take a look:
Tumblr media
Wow! I was surprised to see that F/F averages the most kudos! And that F/M gets the least of all these types of feedback by quite a lot!
Is this because readers don't seek out F/M as much as the other works? Or is it because F/M readers don't tend to leave as much feedback after they read something? To answer this, we need to look at the number of hits (views) that each category gets:
Tumblr media
Fascinating! F/F long fic gets the largest number of hits on average. (Maybe this is because F/F works are the rarest, so more people seeking out long F/F fic view each fanwork, on average, as compared to the other categories?) And we can see that F/M long fic gets the fewest hits per fanwork. (Again, maybe this is because there are a lot of long F/M fics out there, so there's less scarcity, and fewer people view each one?)
Okay, so to follow up on the question of whether F/M readers are less likely to leave feedback after viewing a work -- we can compare rates of feedback. For each work I calculated kudos/hits (I actually looked at kudos per 1000 hits to make the numbers easier to think about), and then I took the median of all those numbers to find average feedback rate. I did the same for comments and bookmarks:
Tumblr media
The main takeaway here is that the reader feedback rates are remarkably similar. (Again, this is based on one narrow slice of long fic, so I wouldn't take the small differences here seriously.) More people view F/F long fic on average, and fewer people view F/M long fic -- but the rate at which they leave feedback appears to be roughly the same across all categories.
Suna Rintarou x manager! reader
TW: None
Don't repost without permission!
After Match
♡♢Now playing: Sweater Weather by The Neighborhood♢♡
"Fix your fucking posture oh my god" You said to Suna. Poking his back.
You were doing everything you can to lift their spirits. The team just finished from their last match against Karasuno. They all felt deflated. As it was their Captain's and the other third year's last match.
You only choose to be Inarizaki Boys Volleyball team's manager because it was your last choice. Being a first year, confused and newly transferred. You were asked and your teacher recommended that you join a club. Although you knew this a little too late and the clubs that were still open were not of your interest. The best route you choose was being their manager.
You found interest in volleyball. But it was not enough for you to commit and play the sport. Being their manager was enough for you to be able to watch it at least. At the same time, you were able to start a social circle. With the club at least.
During your first week as their manager. Everything was still a little awkward. The first years weren't sure how to communicate with you, the third year's were chill but they were busy with practice. The second years....they terrified you.
They looked like people who would kill you if you bumped into the hallways. You shuddered at the thought of them. Always acting like a little mouse in front of the cats.
Then Suna asked you for a personal favor.
It was outside of your job as a manager and it was weird that Suna Rintarou asked you of all people.
He asked you to be his fake girlfriend. Because his parents were 'little pricks' (he said that) and required him to have a girlfriend.
It was weird really, but since then you've been his "girlfriend" you've gotten a bit closer with the second years too. The rest of the team followed. Making you all comfortable with each other.
It was funny, because Rintarou later confessed that he actually liked you. Asking you to officially be his girlfriend. You wouldn't lie if you said that you also liked him.
Suna flinched from the contact. You noticed he was a bit pissed from the last match. You laughed a bit. But upon seeing everyone's sad expressions, your laughter soon died down. You sighed. Getting a pat on the back from your coach for your efforts. You huffed.
When you got back to your dorm, you flopped to your bed right away. Tired from the trip. Sun sighed and sat on the edge of your bed. You turned around and faced Rintarou.
Tears started to spill from your eyes. You weren't sure why you were crying. Suna panicked, unsure on what to do. So he awkwardly hugged you. You continued to sob into his shoulder as you hugged him back. Suna pulled you into his lap. Running his fingers through your hair in hopes of comforting you.
You broke the hug and smiled.
"I'm too affected by this match" You said light-heartedly. Suna chuckled.
"Yeah, you are" He said. The two of you sat in silence. Holding eye contact with each other. He looked so beautiful. Noticing that the two of you were slowly inching closer and closer to each other, you sped things up and kissed him right away.
Your lips touched his and the two of you moved in harmony. His hands trailed down to your waist as you ran your fingers through his hair. You shuddered as You wrapped your legs around his waist and got closer to him. Moving your hips a little to get friction, moaning into the kiss.
You felt a hand grab your hip. You were sure that would mark. Suna broke the kiss, but he kept the distance little between the two of you. The air felt hot. Both of you were panting, starting to get out of breath. He smirked. Your breath hitched as you looked into his cat like eyes.
"Mind letting me cool off after that match baby?"
