Sapphic September prompt 22- "Are you ok?"
Barbara Minerva/Reader
WC: 720ish
Contains: pre-established relationship (sorta), comfort :), sprinkle of usual 1980s... idk., pre-movie (Wonder Woman: 1984).
AN: brought to you by me being bored at work and my friend selecting a random number, god bless.
Summary: You found Barbara in the bathroom composing herself... but you knew better than to let her hold it inside.
~-*-~
You reached out and got a hold of her shoulder, gently letting her know you were there.
"Barbara?"
She spun toward you and quickly flashed a smile and gestured as if nothing had happened. The gesture didn't magically erase her red eyes and the tear that had escaped and trailed through makeup. "Oh, hi, I didn't see you come in."
"Are you ok?" You didn't wait to ask. You watched her carefully as she brushed her hand through her hair and searched for a tissue in her pockets. You held one out to her, having grabbed one from the bathroom counter. She said "thanks" quietly and dabbed at her eyes and her cheek. "Barb," you stepped closer, but she put a hand on your shoulder and squeezed. She smiled bravely, but you knew there could have been a million things that caused her to cry in the bathroom.
"It's ok," she smiled again, but didn't keep your gaze.
"No, tell me."
It was an invitation just as much as it was a breath away from a begging plead.
"It-" her breath hitched, and she leaned against the counter, her back to the mirror. "It was... um. Leroy. He... I wrote a paper about the- the specimens from last month. He said I rushed it." She repeated his statement as if it was impossible. You both knew what it meant- that she was wrong in her findings.
You waited. While the work bathroom wasn't the best place for her to stammer, hiccup, and stumble through an explanation, you knew she wouldn't speak about it again and simply hold it with a white-knuckled grip in her heart if she didn't explain now.
You also knew Leroy was often the source of her sorrow- he was her boss. Although how he got the job ahead of her... you both knew it was only because he was a man and he had grown up with the museum director's family. Many an insult and plot had been half-heartedly formed against the man by Barbara... but that didn't matter.
What mattered was Barbara feeling like shit because he doesnt believe she's as good as she's proved time and time again.
"But I didn't rush it- I took the whole month! He was so sure that the specimens were more than they had been tagged, and he told me to do all these stupid tests! Which I did, of course, most of them I would do anyway just because I hardly have things to do anyway. But I did my job and I did it right and he just- he was so frustrating! He- god, he..." she sighed, catching her breath. "He's wrong! The stones are just- well, they're not just anything. They are pretty spectacular examples of their kind. But they're a dime a dozen, not something special. He's just angry that they're not much to showcase. He'll probably end up lying and totally over-writing my report and do something stupid with them anyway."
There it was. She had calmed down under your soothing attention and nodding, attention focused on her. You were thankful it hadn't taken long.
She looked at you, giving you a weak smile, but this time it was a real one. She had cried a little more during her ramble, but it wasn't anything she couldn't fix in a few minutes. She reached up and gently squeezed your arm.
"Better?" You asked, smiling. Your smile comforted and reassured hers.
She nodded. "You always know how to fix me."
You laughed, and it echoed in the empty bathroom. "I do my best."
She stood, her weight away from the counter. You both waited for a moment, listening for anyone coming toward the bathroom door. It was silent. She quickly cupped your cheeks and gave you a kiss- one you reciprocated. It was quick, but no less a comfort to both of you.
You heard someone coming and you pulled back, moving to a sink and starting to wash your hands. Barbara did the same.
One of the girls in your department came in, hurrying to a stall. You and Barbara left the bathroom, no longer needing to speak about the conversation.
"Are you ok?" You grabbed her hand and asked again before you split ways down the hallway. You let go of her hand quickly, but not before she gave yours a squeeze.
"I am," she nodded.
"I'll see you later, then?"
She nodded again.
"Can't wait," you smiled, giving her a wink, and turning away before she blushed.

Gal Gadot Developing Wonder Woman 3 With James Gunn & Peter Safran!
Speaking to ComicBook, Gal Gadot said that, as she understands it, she will be developing Wonder Woman 3 together with Gunn and Safran. "I love portraying Wonder Woman," Gadot says. "It's so close to and dear to my heart. From what I heard from James and from Peter is that we're gonna develop a Wonder Woman 3 together."

sheesh i dunno jenkins, maybe it was cause the script of Wonder Woman 1984 was absolute horseshit just like Diana’s character in the movie and they don’t want a repeat attempt with the third movie?

What are your alltime favorite comics? Or just comics that you would recommend? Especially stuff that someone new could pick up without too much back reading to understand? You don't have to answer this if you don't want to but I'm looking for recommendations to branch out from just Batman/Batfam and just thought I'd ask!
this is all just off the top of my head, so i'm probably leaving out some Classics on accident, but (in no particular order):
Aquaman: Andromeda
Green Lantern (1990) (from Emerald Twilight (#48) on)
Gotham by Midnight
The Man of Steel (1986)
The Death & Return of Superman (Death of Superman, Funeral for a Friend/World Without a Superman, and Reign of the Supermen)
Superman: Last Son (Action Comics #844 - 846, #851, Annual #11)
Superman: Brainiac (Action Comics #866 - 870) & The New Krypton Saga (concludes with War of the Supermen, which is for some reason not on that reading guide)
World's Finest (2009)
Green Arrow: Year One
Green Lantern/Green Arrow
Green Arrow (1988)
The New Teen Titans (1980), Tales of the Teen Titans, and The New Teen Titans (1984)
Outsiders (2003)
Arsenal (1998)
Titans (1999)
Titans (2008)
Deathstroke (2016)
Steel (1994)
Aquaman: Time & Tide
L.E.G.I.O.N.
R.E.B.E.L.S. (all good, but i especially love from #15 on for kory content)
Aquaman: Death of a Prince
Tempest (1996)
the whole war of light era of green lantern, which i have a bigass reading guide for, but Red Lanterns & Red Daughter of Krypton in particular
Convergence: The Titans
Convergence: Green Lantern/Parallax
Convergence: Green Lantern Corps
Valor (1992) (the first few issues kind of drag, but it picks up quick (after #10, specifically)! the D.O.A. arc is an all-time fave for sure, and Valor #19 might actually be my all-time favorite single comic book issue point blank period)
roy's titans era (New Titans #100 - 130)
The Trial of Superman & Reign of Doomsday (these have literally nothing to do with each other, but we're grouping them together because neither one of them is particularly good. i mean, they're not terrible or anything, but really, they're only faves because i'm a huge sucker for storylines that involve the entire superfam lol)
Superman: The Black Ring (this one is here just because i appreciate how incredibly HECTIC it is. lex 1v1s a gorilla in the middle of the jungle, meets death, becomes a space god, builds a lois sexbot that ends up having been possessed by brainiac the entire time. also slade is there for like 2 pages solely to lose his shit and run around screaming like a little girl. the best kind of comic book insanity. magnifique)
those 5 minutes pre-reboot where damian joined the titans in a way that wasn't annoying as hell (Teen Titans (2003) #88 - 91, Red Robin #20, Teen Titans (2003) #92)
Wonder Woman (1987) (post-crisis ww & superman are both all-time faves, but this is a much better standalone read because it's way more self-contained & not constantly jumping between 9 different titles. again, all good imo, but i'm much more partial to everything post-artemis's introduction in #90 <3)
Superboy (1994) (ngl, i didn't super love the majority of this book. there's a LOT of good for sure, but it is very 90s, and that's not always a good thing. it's not terrible (apart from the romance aspect), and i'd still recommend reading it for sure, but there was definitely a lot of skimming and skipping around when i read through. ~#59 is where i started to find myself skimming a lot less, so if you find yourself having a hard time getting into it, too, i'd say just start there, then go back & read the earlier issues later)
post-crisis superman in general (so good, but holy fuck is it a pain in the ass to read. there were 600 superman titles running at all times, and EVERY single arc bounced between damn near all of them. i really want to make a ridiculously long reading guide for it, too, one day, but for now, you can fight your way through using this with me, if you'd like)
i'm still just starting to break into legion comics myself, so i don't think i can really give good recs for them just yet. i'm really enjoying them so far, though, so it's worth a mention. if you enjoy just jumping right into the deep end with 0 context like i do, i just started the 90s legion halfway through via superboy & valor. no idea what the hell's going on or who anybody is half the time, but that's just part of the fun. it's like sink-or-swim style language immersion but for ridiculous comic book people who talk entirely in references i don't understand even a little
i started with the valor arc in Superboy (1994) #17 - 19, then the following the Future Tense arc, and i just kinda kept reading Legionnaires & Legion of Super-Heroes (1989) from there. also picked up The Legion (2001) with #25, where kon joins up, with zero context for anything that'd happened before in that. this is an objectively terrible way of doing things, but also very fun as long as you don't mind a learning curve
also special mentions for a couple single issues that have always stuck out to me for some reason:
Justice League of America (2006) #11 (feel the need to put like... a claustrophobia warning on this one lol? a very anxiety-inducing read! be warned!)
Superman #712 (krypto-centric issue post-kon's death in Infinite Crisis. makes me want to scream every time i think abt it <3)
and i know you probably meant dc, but tbh most of my All Time Faves are marvel, so i have to mention a few:
X-23 (there are like 3 different volumes, and they're all so incredibly 2000s. i love them all dearly)
Wolverine: Origins
Captain America (2005)
Winter Soldier: Winter Kills
Avengers/Invaders
Old Man Logan (2015) & (2016)
Black Widow (2010)
Marvels (1994)
The Torch (2008)
Gambit (2012)
Gambit & Bishop: Sons of the Atom
Rogue (2004) (not good. kind of objectively terrible, actually, but i love rogue and i love rogue & shiro's relationship AND i love the bisexual implications with blindspot, so… here we are. if you aren't a huge rogue fan already, you will almost certainly not enjoy this lol)
Dark Wolverine & Daken: Dark Wolverine (THE absolute fave. akihiro is what a good % of the batfandom thinks jason todd is/was. bisexual, evil, obsessed with his own father. check, check, and check with a weird, violently homoerotic relationship with the punisher the cherry on top. also marjorie liu stealth confirming johnny storm's bisexuality via putting him in an absurdly toxic relationship with akihiro for like 2 issues remains both incredibly iconic and absolutely hilarious to me. 10/10/10)
in terms of more recent comics, i've pretty much only been keeping up with marvel
Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty (2022) (pretty much everything else going on (esp everything with bucky) is kind of annoying, but it has my favorite steve characterization like… maybe ever)
New Mutants (2019) (yeah, everything about krakoa era x-men is just kind of inherently annoying, but this one came outta left field near the end there with some of my favorite writing for madelyne pryor in a while and the dani moonstar & madelyne pryor enemies-to-lovers arc i didn't know i needed but am now fully obsessed with)
Midnight Suns (2022) (love a good rag-tag team of characters who have no business being on a team together. substitute teacher blade is such a powerful concept, it immediately made this an all-timer for me, and logan being drawn approximately 4ft shorter than everyone around him cemented it as a 10/10)
aaand finally, i've also really been enjoying dynamite lately. Vampirella/Red Sonja (2019) is where i got onboard with them. you don't have to know jack about these characters or universe beforehand (i didn't!), and i really can't recommend it enough, especially if you're someone who loves stories with time travel and/or bisexual vampire women
this is so messy, and i'm definitely forgetting a lot here lol, but hopefully this helps & you find something you like! good luck & have fun!

Thinking thoughts because I've seen so much Russian Robin content but I'm putting a switch on it
So short history lesson but Poland was under Russian rule soon after WW 2 and became a communist country and was freed after an election in 1990 so
- Polish Robin who was placed in a spy program after her parents caused issues for the government (more about this later)
- She was shipped off to Russia were she spend the rest of her teen years training
- She was there when Alexie was told he had a year to fix whatever went wrong with their attempt the first time
- Robin definitely tried escaping back to Poland a few times but ended up getting caught and faced serious repercussions (omg is that Enzo?)
- She is technically Steve's age but because when she came to America her english was like nonexistent she was held back a year
- She was in the states since 1983 in Alaska but after reports of the chemical leak in Hawkins she was sent there for the rest of 1984 till season 3 starts
- Buff Robin enough said
- She tries to convince Dustin that whatever he got on the recording wasn't Russian but after a long debate she gave in to help them because she thought they'll think it's from Russia but after Steve pointed out the Indiana Flyer ride Robin knew she was in deep shit
- Robin was forced to tell the commander what's happening and got the shit beat out of her for translating their code to Americans but she promised that she'll keep them away
- During the interrogation the commander makes a comment about Robin being Polish but Steve never noticed the comment, he also makes a remark how Alexie was a traitor and that she'll wish she could meet with him instead (aka she'll wish she was dead)
- Of course that doesn't happen as Steve and Robin are saved by Dustin and Erica but the Soviet Union isn't too happy with what happened, so they send a mission file to Robin stating that she has to stay and keep an eye out for anymore Upside Down activity
- No one knows what Robin's real motives are because she doesn't want to lose her only friends
- After season 4 when Hopper gets dropped off by Enzo, Robin is there and ends up cornering him with a gun pointed to his gut and forced to tell her everything he knows
- Vecna uses Robin's trauma against her and once she's saved she slips back into her survival mindset and starts to only speak Polish or Russian while lashing out if anyone got too close
- The gang does find out about Robin's affiliation with the Soviet Union and their horrified, some broken translation from when she went into her survival mindset and an attack by a Russian spy helped put the pieces together
- Everyone distances themselves from Robin because how can we trust her after this but El keeps in touch with her because she's still Robin
- Robin tries to sacrifice herself to save the party because they will never trust her again and see lost all of her friends because of this but thanks to El for being so nice Robin doesn't die
————
- Robin is littered with scars, her least favorite is the Soviet Union brand on her torso (on the left side under her ribs) along with multiple cuts, scrapes, bullet wounds and some scars done by herself (once everything is fixed Nancy kisses all of Robin's scars so she feels better about them)
- Robin loves the snow especially when it snows at night because she has her happiest memories then
- Absolutely amazing at making Polish foods and deserts and the whole party loves it too which makes Robin happy because she gets to share her culture with her favorite people
- Has awful nightmares and her and Hooper end up trading stories of their times in a Russian Prison because they know their not alone in their fear
- Dresses baggy and more masculine because of the scars and how much she hates her body for being exactly like the Russians wanted it for a spy
- Has a surprisingly difficult workout routine because of her spy training (Steve gave up after 5 sets of one exercise, Nancy sits on Robin's back while she does push ups)
- Has a surprisingly high alcohol tolerance
- Knife tricks
————
Completely forgot Poland was once communistic which is sad because I'm Polish but wooo
Honestly this came out of the blue but I like it

Hello dear!
This year is a leap year, and as 29th February is not technically a real day, I'm giving you the chance to spend 28th February with a Pedro character that you love and 29th February with a Pedro character that you don't. Which are they, and how are you spending your days?
Love, El
I’m going to answer for the Pedro character I do not love: Maxwell Lord. I will pull that man by his hair, dye it back to its beautiful chocolate brown and kick him to go spend quality time with his son. 😤 I’ve only watched WW 1984 once, will not watch it again. No thank you. Keep Max over there. 👀 Ewww…
Now picking a Pedro character I like, there’s so many! (Besides Maxwell thank goodness!) This is hard because I would like to make a schedule for at least four of them, that’s not too greedy right? 😂
My top three: Din Djarin, Javi G and Tim Rockford. Maybe not what you were expecting but this is Nerdie so, meh. 🫤 Which one of these three would I choose for the 28th…. This is a very difficult choice, but it’s gonna be Javier Gutierrez 🧸
My heart will always be fond of our dogged, holster wearing, no those white shirts fit just right Detective 🕵️ Rockford and our bounty hunter with a heart as big as his pulse rifle Din Djarin.
But Javi G though 🥰
He’d be fine with me being loud, snorting a bit when I laugh and requesting that after we watch three Nic Cage movies, we watch The Lion King, Robin Hood: Men in Tights and Harlem Nights. All excellent movies and if he for some reason hasn’t see these, he will with me. We will laugh, cry, sing along and debate the importance of pinkie toes so long I will forget that I have to see Maxwell (bless you Javi G for making me forget that man. He’s a stain on my brain.) 🧠
I know that after having difficult cases or hunts, Tim and Din aren’t going to be too happy about my volume. I have only one - loud. Not really calming. Like they may need.
Javi G might find my volume endearing and love when I exclaim at different things during “Gone in 60 seconds” maybe. 🤔 Also people forget that Javi is an excellent shot just like Tim and Din (maybe not Din but who else has a pulse rifle?) And that touches me deeply (insert whatever dirty joke suits your fancy, I’ll accept all of them). Plus I can floof his hair during the movie or Javi might agree because I said I wanted to. I wouldn’t have to explain why.
Tim would want me to explain why he needs to swear his holsters despite being home to tease me which would work - I would feel like my face is on fire but that’s fine. Din would not understand my fascination with his beskar or extreme interest in it outside of him being a Mandalorian. I would melt into the floor when Din would ask (because he’s our inquisitive non-judgmental big metal bean) why am I so focused on it. I can’t lie, he’s got sensors and has been a bounty hunter long enough to that I’m lying and I just can’t tell him why to his T-visor. My why would be best described in my Sardi’ka Sessions and I cannot say any of that to his helmet. 😭
Tumblr media
Anyway, that’s my spiel. Javi G is below because that’s who I’m spending the 28th with. I would leave Max waiting for me very sad and spend the 29th with Javi as well.

I don't really care about the cinematic stuff which means I didn't know that Max Lord was in WW 1984 so this was my face when I opened the Max tag and it was ALL PEDRO PASCAL

So Tom King recently announced that he'll be introducing a "Joker-level threat" for Wonder Woman, i.e. a new would be popular arch-enemy, explaining she never really had that many iconic foes. This begs the question: Are the lack of iconicity of her rogues gallery due to their low quality, or (one who am I more favorable to) more having to do with the lack of exposure? I do think there's a bit of intersection between the two, granted.
Lack of exposure outside of comics, and in comics they don’t get the best of treatment. Lack of exposure is a problem because that’s how the general audience learns about these characters. General Zod is Superman’s second greatest villain because of how many times the movies have used him. Mr. Freeze is a great villain because of how the DCAU revamped him. Neither of those two would be as “big” as they are now if Superman and Batman were solely comic properties. Wonder Woman’s Rogues suffered from not having that adaption until the DCEU and her upcoming video game spotlighted them.
Comics wise her villains have yet to have that definitive story like The Killing Joke or Azz/Bermejo Luthor. Rucka’s Rebirth run was great but his Cheetah has struggled since he left because he made her *too* sympathetic to the point she’s not really even a villain currently. Circe rules and she’s got the best claim to being the arch right now given she’s the one who has had the strongest stories as a villain fighting WW over in Tynion and Ram V JLD. What’s holding her back is her design, it’s really boring and needs to be changed to something flamboyant. Ares is like Cheetah, I love what Rucka did with him and I think he’s better suited as the Ra’s Al Ghul figure who is out to corrupt Diana specifically. But he really only has that great Perez story where’s he’s the starting villain, and he peaks there. So I get why some might view the position as being up for grabs.
But King’s statement is setting himself up to fail. Lex and Joker were not created with the intent of being the #1 bad guys for their respective heroes. Hell Lex displaced the Ultra-Humanite who was previously intended to be Superman’s greatest foe! They became such because:
1. They got used over and over again because writers liked them, and thus became cemented as “big deals”.
2. They got stories that fleshed them out, explored the interesting ways they served as foils to their heroes, or accomplished feats that marked them as a cut above the other Rogues.
Sovereign is a new character, he simply cannot hope to match Lex or Joker yet. For him to earn that status, it would require the next writer after King to pick him up and use him and then the next and the next and so forth until he became cemented as a reoccurring foe. We’ve seen plenty of writers try to leave their mark on WW by creating an “archnemesis” for her. Firstborn, Grail, Devastation, none of them pulled it off. You must continuously USE a villain for them to be the arch nemesis, having a long running feud is what makes them stick out. At best Sovereign will be a cool new opponent, and King does plan to use the other Wonder Rogues like Circe and Grail.
My bet is Sovereign will end up being a Hush - not the deepest character but one that people like and think is cool, and he’ll also gather the Rogues Gallery together so we get to see Diana fight her entire Gallery to get to him. If King pulls that off then I think he might have a villain that lasts because a Hush type story for Wonder Woman is exactly the kind of thing Gunn would be looking at for DCU WW. And if Sovereign gets adapted, well then there’s a good chance he sticks around. Assuming they don’t 1984 it…
