More Obscure Facts About Fallout 4 Companions*
*Now with slightly more unverified psychoanalysis!
X6 gets anxious at the thought of large crowds.
Codsworth likes to imagine being a father to a little robot son. Hang on, buddy, I’m getting my six hundred pounds of scrap metal out of storage.
MacCready seems to have lived in Bigtown for some period of time, or at least visited enough to have memories there. Also, the Lone Wanderer (or one of their companions/Sidney) told him about their encounter with Button Gwinnett.
Despite having little empathy for the people of the Commonwealth, Cait often becomes distressed imagining the victims of the bombs, especially when children are involved.
Danse believes that pre-war healthcare and scientific research should have been publicly owned. He hates corporations in general, especially Vault-Tec.
Nick not only loves poetry, but he’s also able to recite several famous poems such as Ozymandias and The Raven. He’s very sad to see destroyed books at the library.
It’s been confirmed by a non-Deacon source that he spent a month as a ghoul. (Somehow.) NPC dialogue implies that he was telling the truth about disguising himself as a woman for awhile, too.
Apparently Piper was a complete nightmare as a child. She would steal her dad’s pistol, shoot the combat inhibitors off robots, and let them run through town.
There’s some sort of debate in the fandom about whether Curie was originally a Miss Nanny or a Mister Handy, but she confirms in dialogue that she was a Miss Nanny.
Nick can feel pain! :(!
Deacon likes molerats, hates killing them, and wishes he could domesticate them. He should visit Sloan.
A probably incomplete list of things Danse wishes he could do: Fishing, watching a movie, playing/watching baseball, seeing a show at an amphitheater, bowling, shopping
TBH I was wrong on the last post. Preston doesn’t like swimming, his dialogue is tagged as sarcastic there. In my defense, he’s got depression and tends to speak flatly. That means that not one single companion likes to swim, except Strong who doesn’t care.
Despite maintaining there’s a difference between robots and synths, Nick believes in robot rights and often encourages robots not to think of themselves as slaves.

You know what I want from Bethesda? A book strictly dedicated to the Fallout companions. I want to know canon, never before seen details about them that the games don't even acknowledge. I want them to have several pages dedicated to each companion that go into the most obscure factoids about them. What else have they been through besides the depressing stuff? How tall are they? What's their favourite food? Literally anything.

x6-88 occupies a very interesting and very uncomfortable space in the narrative. he doesnt think of himself as a person, and this isnt stupid, its necessary for his sanity. to admit he is a person is to admit that he has been wronged, to admit that the institute is wrong, to admit that he has been wrong to follow their directions, to admit that he has wronged others. if he lets himself think hes a person, that means hes a victim. that is unthinkable to a badass like him. if he thinks hes a slave, that means hes a slavecatcher. that means those he wants to please are slavers, just like the raiders he delights in killing. if he admits that hes scared of being reset (which he is. its why he walks on eggshells around you at first), that means its bad when he sends other synths to be reset. he has wholly bought into not being a person, because that would mean his life's work for the institute is wrong
to look himself in the mirror, he cant afford to be wrong. he cant be a person. he cant be a slave. the institute must. be. right.

i will never not be mad that x6-88 consistently gets so blatantly mischaracterized. if you’ve ever fallen from high up inside the institute on accident, you know he’s one sarcastic bitch when it suits him, and i love him for that. he’s genuinely so funny at times, he just has such a flat tone and expression that it goes right over people’s heads. but he delivers such scathing roasts in such a calm manner that i end up wheezing laughing any time i have him as a companion. but there’s a lot more to him than just being another “patrolling the mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter”-NCR-trooper-level-repetitive no-name courser.
he’s afraid of heights, and certainly doesn’t like flying, which given how extremely he exercises caution, is perfectly in character. he gets jumpy and worries almost constantly, even if he’s outwardly very calm and collected. he’s ignorant with regards to the old world, but he does express his imagination at times, even if it’s 99.9% practically-focused and only really extends to his own experience and the knowledge of the institute. but he has so many traits that aren’t in line with the stiff representation the fandom gives him. he actually has a lot of traits that would get most synths wiped if they were caught displaying them in the institute. i do still think they did him extremely, viciously, disrespectfully dirty in his writing (which is a whole rant of its own), but he still has more characterization than a lot of the fandom gives him credit for.
he’s smooth-talking, calm, and collected upon initial impression, but he’s also awkward and sheepish and embarrassed to admit anything personal to you (even just that he admires you) most of the time once you start getting close to him. he’s also a worry wart, anxious about your approval, ashamed and almost mortified if you choose to scold him for doubting you, and it’s clear that he’s seeking validation specifically from you even if he seems so self assured all the rest of the time, to the point of claiming boredom during combat. he’s this blade-lookalike, terminator type who kicks ass and takes names, but who’s afraid of heights and is prissy about the surface world. he seems to enjoy when you’re a mean vindictive bastard, but not within the institute even when scientists have literally just undermined father and threatened the proper functioning of the institute. he’s so reserved in his praise in front of you during/after libertalia, but as you walk around the institute on your own, you find out from other coursers that he’s been talking about you to them, telling them about you and praising your fighting abilities. and given how many of these coursers say it, it almost seems like he’s been gushing about working with you (at least, in his own way) while you’ve been apart. he’s talked about as the best of the best basically, and since he’s bragging about you, the other coursers think you’re cool. which, obviously you can infer a few things about him from this whole thing: he’s a little bit of a gossip (just a little, plus it’s positive); he’s not only respected, but provides his own opinions to the others and that matters to them, his opinion of you matters to the other resident badasses; once you impress him, he likes you, enough to tell the others about you and your performance in the field.
the bigger shock is that he openly praised you when reporting to justin ayo of all people, which ayo will tell you while also claiming that x6-88 “does not give praise lightly. well done.”
all of these things build a character. he deserved better characterization, better development, better treatment of his character, all of that and more, but the bare bones are there if you’re willing to look.
it just makes me irritable when he gets so poorly characterized by people who claim to like him. i don’t even know x6-88 that well compared to some other characters but i know that much.

the funniest thing in the world to me is that you could ask X6-88 how old he is and he could just say some shit like "I was made five years ago." He's probably not even old enough to vote.

what the companions get canceled for
Ada; thinks lost and found is a freebie box, will walk into your home if the garage door is open and try to haggle for your shit
Cait; The new Giddyup Buttercups just released, a riot broke out in the store, she emerged the winner. because, y'know. she was fighting moms and their children
Codsworth; assault (ferociously wiping bbq sauce off a strangers face)
Curie; chasing anti-vax protesters with disease samples on q-tips
Danse; slurs
Deacon; the most insane kin drama you have ever seen unfold
Dogmeat; peed on a prized show poodle at the park
Gage; exotic animal ownership and driving a truck that is holding on with duct tape and a prayer. no one finds out about the...other things
Hancock; went to Nuka World, popped some bad, expired chems, and spent a week living in the walls of the attractions, planning an assassination on Cappy
MacCready; chasing anti-vax protesters with knives
Nick; exiled by the Italian community for how he makes spaghetti in the microwave (he's a busy man, it's convenient, it tastes the same, what's the fuss about?)
Old Longfellow; sport hunter
Strong; rushes the stage at a production of Cats and attacks the actors ("Bustopher Jones~, is not skin and bones~, in fact, he's remarkably fa—AAAAAAAAAA–")
Piper; the most insane twitter political hot take thread you have ever seen unfold
Preston; broke HOA rules to start a community garden and sicced children on the HOA board members
X6-88; the only HOA board member that's willing to throw children into traffic if it means digging up Preston's illegal green beans

Some Obscure Facts About Fallout 4 Companions*
*obscurity not guaranteed because this fandom is seven years old and i just got here
Preston loves swimming! He also loves vertibirds! How has the world not extinguished your joy yet Preston!
Cait is afraid of spiders. Given what the radiation did to everything else, I think I’m also preemptively afraid of Fallout’s spiders.
Curie is atheistic, or potentially agnostic. However, she does express concern about sinning (and has the default praying animation, like all humanoid characters).
Danse likes country-western and bluegrass music. Danse would hear Big Iron for the first time and cry.
Deacon is great with kids and uses them as informants. (This information is vitally important to me.)
Hancock’s parents are named Patrick and Martha. His brother’s name is Guy. (Additional info: Hancock refers to his father as “pop.”)
Several lines indicate that Nick is capable of drinking and maybe even tasting. He can also smell. Jury’s still out on how he can smoke, though.
Mama Murphy knitted Piper her scarf. (Semi-canon)
Strong has faint memories of the Institute, and they’re apparently very upsetting for him.
X6 and I are friends and I love him and someday he’ll forgive me.
Codsworth’s General Atomics warranty is apparently still active. Good thing his mum is a lawyer, I guess.
Okay, if you want a real X6 fact, he likes the cold.
MacCready started drinking when he was SIX. BABY BOY WHAT DO YOU MEAN, DO YOU RAISE YOUR CHILD THIS WAY

Coursers are not a lost cause! I’m still sad at the fact you can’t get X6-88 to leave the Institute and explore his own identity because there are glimpses of him “acting out” like during the affinity talks he speaks with more emotion because he feels safe around you (unless you tell him to stop it lmao). You can’t tell me that he wholeheartedly believes he’s just a machine made to serve and even if he does, I know that boy still wants to be respected by Father and the scientists (I like to think the people there annoy him lol). When he finally idolizes the player, I bet he could care less about the Institute and their goals, but Bethesda didn’t want to expand on it
