The perfect ya romance! So romantic, dynamic characters, funny and emotional all at once.
Riley is a die-hard theater kid. When her best friend and she takes her mom's car (without a driver's license) to go see Waitress traveling Broadway, she does not look forward to paying for her crimes when she gets caught. She has to work at her dad's game store for 8 weeks while also not participating in any theater activities. When her ex-boyfriend shows up to obnoxiously gloat at the shop, she accidentally blurts out that she is, in fact, in another relationship.... with Nathan, a gamer boy that she is not exactly on good terms with.
This had so many things I loved in it. The incorporation of the game shop feeling like a home away from home to the many that gather there for different reasons is something I can definitely relate to. Not to mention the undeniable charm of the two main characters. I thoroughly enjoyed every second of this read!
Out January 9, 2024!
Thank you, Netgalley and Publisher, for this Arc!

last book read + last stethoscope used, part 19
Tumblr media
The stethoscope: Prestige medical sprague in hunter.
The book: The second title in B.B. Alston's Supernatural Investigations series, Amari and the Great Game. This was So. Much. Fun. I know I'm way too old for this series but it doesn't matter. I don't know how many books Alston has planned, but it feels like reading Harry Potter all over again, minus the antisemitic tropes and racist names and, well, the author turning out to be openly and passionately transphobic. The first book got me interested in this world and the second made me want to lose myself in it for a time. And I love Amari as a brilliant, powerful protagonist who is also just a tween girl. I also really enjoy the strong bonds the characters share without the author pushing sex and romance onto them and just allowing them to be kids. But of course in the tradition of these kinds of fantasies, they are kids who are accomplishing what the adults around them cannot. Can't wait for book three.

The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
we love a bisexual main character!!!
it's a good thing he had that redeeming factor because otherwise i found him a bit unbearable. i do wish he showed more signs of personal growth throughout the story
HOWEVER, this was a highly engaging read with lots of adventure (robbers! pirates! sexy encounters! dangerous escapes! magical realism, a bit!) it's like uncharted had a baby with a coming-of-age historical romance
YA, but doesn't read like it
solidly entertaining and fun!! i plan to eventually read the next two in the series, as well

Started reading this for spooky season and it makes me want to read more YA horror. This is also one of those books where the majority of the characters are awful people, but awful in a way that feels horribly real and compelling.

Thank you to Em for the fantastic review for Rotting Trees! Em has great taste in books and I'm not just saying that, she was spot on about The Book Thief. Here is the review if you're interested (I also think it's genuinely helpful if you're thinking of joining the readalong but not sure yet).

I had high expectations for this book, and it went beyond those plus another billion high. This is my new favorite ya series right now! I have not been so invested in a ya fantasy in a while, and this had me heart and soul. Very character driven, plot driven also. But these characters, Selly, Leander, and Keegan, feel like my new best book friends.
A sentinel goddess that requires a sacrifice, a slumbering god that needs to awaken. These are the two sides of a war that seem hellbent on coming. Leander is a prince who is journeying to make a sacrifice to his kingdom's goddess, unknowingly entering dangerous waters on Selly's ship. Keegan, a scholar, is also aboard, unwittingly being dragged into the middle of history in the making.
What they don't know is that the country across from them has been paying attention. Particularly Laskia, dying to prove that she is better and worth more than her infamous sister.
I cried 5 times reading this, and I really never cry in books. This author had me instantly feeling attached to these characters and their emotions, so yeah... some tearjerker moments had me.
Out May 2, 2023!

✩🏃‍♀️🏞️Review:
Ally Condie’s mystery novel is chilling and thought provoking.
“The Only Girl in Town” is told from the perspective of July Fielding, the only person remaining in her small town of Lithia after everyone else mysteriously disappears. Her only chance at unraveling the mystery and getting back her friends and family is a series of objects and cryptic messages that serve as reminders of her past.
One of my favorite aspects of this novel are the short, lyrical chapters. Each chapter is around 1-2 pages in length, resulting in a fast paced novel that builds suspense. The cliffhangers and climactic moments in conjunction with the central mystery of “The Only Girl in Town” were gripping, making it impossible for me to put it down.
I also like how Condie organized the novel’s timeline. The reader jumps back and forth between July’s past and present, trying to piece together the events leading up to her loved ones’ disappearances. I found myself trying to solve the mystery behind their vanishing using the clues that Condie sprinkled throughout and she successfully had me guessing at every turn!
Unfortunately, when the pieces finally came together, I didn’t fully understand what Condie was going for with her big reveal at the end. There were timeline inconsistencies that threw me for a loop and too many elements left up for interpretation. Still, I did resonate with the novel’s commentary on love, loneliness, and letting go of the past.
