There is one more thing in the ending of ‘Dracula’, which probably seemed so obvious to me that I almost never said it. The point is that the final scene, the moment with sex, represents not only the expression of Dracula's feelings but – perhaps most of all – Agatha's own desire.
It's hard to explain. We saw those understandable coincidences (which are never coincidences, especially in Moffat's writing) in other episodes where Dracula drinks someone's blood. Just drinking blood is one thing, especially in order to satisfy physical hunger. Here we are not talking about hunger at all, and not about the process of drinking blood as such. We see two people between whom a very specific dialogue is going on. Very precisely and openly spoken one. A dialogue in which the words are so carefully chosen that no one is left in doubt about what we are witnessing.
Someone has already noted that of all Dracula's victims, only Agatha sees him in her dream, and more than openly in the finale. And we, I hope, will talk about this again. But it is important to remember that Dracula ‘gets’ out of his victims their secret thoughts and desires, something that they may not always admit to themselves.
Remember the conversation between Agatha and Jonathan? Jonathan is obviously ashamed of his dreams about Mina. This is clear from Agatha's words. If Jonathan had been ashamed to talk about these dreams, she would have said so, ‘There is no shame in sharing this with us. It is not only what you did in Dracula's castle that is important, but also everything you thought about and what you felt, right down to your fantasies and dreams.’ She literally says this when they return to her question about whether he had sexual intercourse with the Count. And then she suddenly drops her usual pragmatic tone and begins to talk about dreams as heaven in which we can sin without fear of being punished.
I think this is the same pragmatism, only in relation to something else – ‘stop being ashamed of your dreams and tell me about them.’ Agatha sees perfectly well who Jonathan is, and she understands perfectly well that if he decides that talking about something is wrong or ‘undignified’, he will never tell – even if she threatens to cut him into pieces. Therefore, she, like a smart investigator, uses reasonable tactics that will help her counterpart talk.
Jonathan's dream and its meaning are clear to Agatha precisely because she is looking from the outside. She doesn't notice her own infatuation with the Count – until she stumbles upon Mina's shocked look in response to the words that ‘Dracula is the best among vampires,’ and immediately corrects herself – ‘the most successful one.’ She can see a situation, though: Dracula gives the victim what he wants. And Moffat and Gatiss want us to remember this. Then this will be repeated several times, but not as clearly as with Jonathan.
In this context, by the way, Zoe's reaction is interesting. Dracula, just like with Agatha, is quite frank with her and, unlike other victims, drags Zoe ‘to his home.’ But there she reacts like everyone else – immediately manifesting her desires. ‘You are killing me?’ And, just like with the others, Dracula gives her what she wants, ‘It doesn't have to hurt.’
But let's return to Agatha. From what we've seen, it's clear that the ending is a gift for her because that's what she wanted. Whether she realized it or not, whether she thought it was normal or unacceptable, she wanted to make love to him. And he wanted it too.
That's why the ending is so harmonious. And so even those who don't like it conceptually often can't stop rewatching this part.
Such is the power of art.

Why do we have so little fanart? 🥺
I found this one on Pinterest (artist wasn’t mentioned but not my work!) but surely, when I see how many beautiful and creative things are being made out there, we must have some creative peeps too?
Been thinking of making a Dragatha fb page but I would like some more - credited! - art to add.
Just…throwing it out there, am at home sick and have too much time on my hands 😅

All these characters are from an RPG campaign called; Gehenna's Gates, set in the world of Vampire The Masquerade.
The London Coterie:
In the beating heart of London, an unprecedented coterie emerges, an entanglement of shattered souls, representative of various clans of vampires, lupines and even humans. This extraordinary gathering, which under ordinary conditions would have been filled with rivers of blood and vengeance, is governed by an extraordinary alliance of founding members. This council, which holds power over London, includes Danya Vetranov, the cunning ravnos; Luc Gossens, the imposing Brujah; Elizabeth DeLacy, noble of the Ventrue clan, and Nathan Black, the tormented soul of the Baali.
While Rudolf and Jonah contribute their unique skills to the coterie and its governance, Arthur, the ex-vampire hunter, keeps to the sidelines, leading the group like an understated father figure.
The real magic of the coterie, however, is reflected in the diverse array of individuals who have joined them. People like Philippe, a former circus member now Luc's partner, and their adopted children like Simone Leveasque, a former Malkavian turned werewolf; Zoe, a follower of the Gangrel clan; Bill, an enigmatic Assamite; and even Dandelion, a demon deeply bonded to Luc. Each member brings with them a unique element that contributes to weaving the surprising mosaic of this coterie.
But the real surprise lies in their ability to welcome former enemies and marginalized individuals. Van Helsing, Rany the Witch, Devon Eskarra and Anselm Godwyn, each bearing the scars of ancient battles, have become symbols of renewal and change within the group.

Making fanvids has some benefits :) You start paying attention to the smallest details. I finally noticed this.
When Dracula gives Zoe his blood he not just trying to shock her (which he obviously does) but also wants to remember her of something.

This whole bit was just so unreasonably funny to me, especially the fact that this probably very secret organization set their WiFi password as Dracula and then expected the head Narcissist himself not to guess it.

"after all this time, did you think i'd let it hurt?"
dracula x agatha
Tumblr media
i caved in! i love this scene so much i just had to write this for it. it's pretty short and essentially just a retelling, but it was such a beautiful scene i couldn't help it. claes and dolly's chemistry was so good!
“You lose. You will live forever. In shame.”
Shame. Dracula kept his gaze on her. Everything he thought he knew about himself had been a lie. He’d been alive for so long everything had become a haze around his one principal goal; eternal life - a haze that Agatha Van Helsing had managed to find clarity within. A clarity he’d never thought to search for himself. For the first time in his many years of living, he questioned everything about himself. So much so he was willing to surrender himself.
Dracula watched Agatha, in the body of Zoe, wither away in her last breaths. His breath was shaky also, as he leaned over and picked her up in his arms, one grasping her knees, the other cradling her shoulders. He let her head rest against his chest. She was so very frail. She was in pain. And for once, the pain of another pained him to the bone. The count placed her gently on the surface of the table; the marble was probably freezing against her skin - he removed his coat and placed it over her shoulders, a gesture of care, before he was to do her a kindness in the form of a most heinous act.
Dracula took one last glimpse of the sun, shining in all her glory, before he hoisted himself up on the counter and clambered atop Zoe’s body. Her hair was the same dark chestnut that is had been all those years ago. Though shorter and straighter, it framed her chiseled face just as it had that balmy night aboard the Demeter. He couldn’t help but admire her natural beauty. Dracula gently brushed her hair off her neck and slightly pulled the neck of her shirt down to allow him easier access to that vital artery, careful not to scratch her skin with his nails as though he wasn’t just about to tear her throat out with his teeth.
Dracula, placed a gentle kiss to her cheek. “Goodbye... Agatha.”
And thenhe bore his teeth and sunk his fangs deep into her flesh.
She did not taste good. The exquisite saltiness and cherry-hints of her blood were no longer, instead replaced by a liquid so foul, so acidic it felt toxic against his tongue. Bush he didn’t spit it out. He kept sucking and drinking and sucking and drinking, every swallow burning his throat from the inside out.
But he masked the suffering with something beautiful for her.
“This isn’t real. This is a dream.”
“Of course it is.”
“You’re drinking my blood. And my blood is deadly to you.”
“Yes.”
“So you’ll die...”
Dracula finally pulled away, thick poison driping down his chin, his eyes as black as the ace of spades. Her breathing had stopped, and he knew he too was not far off. He took one final gasp of air into his lungs, before collapsing atop her.
“So will you.”
The world around him dissipated out, as his consciousness met hers within that glorious dream land. His vision filled with a warming, comforting yellow light, like fire.
He could feel a soft, feminine touch on his back, and as he opened his eyes, he met her gaze. That kind, blue gaze of hers. He was with her, his body over her but this time he wasn’t drinking her blood, but kissing her neck. Tenderly. He felt the lust to worship her, surge through his veins.
His intelligent, witty, most unorthodox Agatha.
After all she’d been though, he wanted to make her final moments as beautiful as possible. And this was perfect.
Dracula pulled away from the kiss to gaze into her eyes once more, her hands cupping his cheeks. His fingertips grazed her chest as he rolled onto his side, immersed in her embrace. He allowed his lips to linger along her collarbones, lazily placing his leg over her lower thigh, velvet covering maintaining her modesty. She was truly beautiful.
And as they lay there in their nakedness, embraced in the arms of each other, they became enveloped in a bright sunlight. It wasn’t painful, but warm, pleasurable. All-consuming, yet tranquil.
“After all this time, did you think I’d let it hurt?”

What you analyzed is reminiscent of the Gnostics (especially the Ophites) who saw God as not the true Godhood but as "the Demiurge" (means creator in Greek) who is an oppressor to his creations, while Satan/the serpent is the liberator, and Eve made the right choice. In the original, Adam is presented as tempted by the corrupted Eve who brings misfortune to humanity (see also the Greek Pandora) and then he accuses her of dooming them all (telling God it's not my fault it's this woman you made for me that made me do it). Meanwhile, for the Gnostics, Eve (also called Zoe; Life) is the manifestation of true Godhood (Sophia; aka wisdom) in contrast to the Demiurge/God, and Adam -who unlike Eve is passive- acknowledges it. In surviving texts like the Apocryphon of John and Apocalypse of Adam, he says that Eve “taught me a word of knowledge of the eternal God.” Eve in two texts tells Adam “Adam! Become alive. Arise upon the earth.” and Adam says “It is you who has given me life.” and always acknowledges her as the one who has awakened him. Also, "The Hypostasis of the Archons" refers to the serpent as “The Teacher”.
Another anon also added this:
ooo idj if you know this but there is apocryphal theology on the serpent as the teacher of eve in defiance of the creator's forced ignorance to keep adam and later humans under his absolute control, though it was regarded as herecy and was persecuted
Oh wow this is fascinating! Thank you for this insight! This kind of retelling is really interesting to me. I love the idea of flipping Eve's sin around and it being necessary for the creation of man. Also this is relevant to my interests if you know I'm also obssessed with a certain skateboarding anime which has original sin as a theme.
(This is in reference to my meta about the relationship between the Harkers and Van Helsing which I went off on and compared them to Original Sin)

My Headcanons for Jack Seward (BBC Dracula)
Tumblr media
He's an only child, and never really seemed to connect with the other kids, despite his efforts to join in their games. He was often bullied as a child and had no friends, which left him with feelings of unworthiness and insecurity that follows him through adulthood.
His home life was...not great. Despite his family being wealthy and the ability to have anything they want, his parents were very unhappy. His mother suffered from depression and anxiety, and even though she cared for Jack, she had a hard time connecting to him because of her mental illness. She eventually commits suicide when Jack is six years old.
The event really shook Jack to the core, even prompting him as an adult to become a doctor and specializing in mental health. His mother's death made him a target for kids, saying that his mom was a nutjob and he maybe should follow in her footsteps.
Jack's dad was an overbearing, mean, and snobbish man, who put too much expectation on his son. He was disappointed that Jack was not more "manly" and was too sensitive for his father's taste. Jack always tried to gain his father's approval, but after graduating high school, he realized it was never going to happen, so after a big argument of what career Jack wanted to go into, he leaves for good and his father cuts him off.
Getting into college on a scholarship, Jack meets Zoe Van Helsing, who sees how quiet but hardworking he is, and decides to take him under her wing. Jack sees her as a substitute parent, even at times the older sister he never had. She tells him about the Harker Foundation, and how joining is easy money, knowing that he is struggling now being cut off, and it is a life saver for Jack.
He also signed up for tutoring for the extra money, and that is how he meets Lucy Westenra. She went to college for Liberal Arts, but was struggling and her mom insisted she get a tutor. Jack was very shy around her at first, but her open personality made it easier for him to open up and he starts to fall for her. He knew Lucy could be vain, cold, and mean, but he still loved her because she made him feel seen and needed, which is something no one else had ever made him feel.
When she decided to leave college, Jack was devastated as he was certain he'd never see her again, but she called him one day (having his number to contact him for tutoring sessions) and asked him to join her at the club. He was so happy to be able to be with her outside of school, and that night, she suggest that they go back to her place, which they then sleep together that night.
Jack never kissed anyone before Lucy and, even though he knew she didn't feel the same way as he did, he accepted her offer, certain this was the most love he'd ever get. It broke his heart to see her with other people, but he's never dare to share what his feelings for her are, seeing it as his problem and not hers.
When he hears that he lost two of the most important people in one day, with him killing vampire Lucy and Zoe dies while taking Dracula with her, he feels totally lost, and almost ready to end his life, but decides to push forward, seeing that Zoe left him everything, with a note saying how proud she is of him and is certain he'll be a great doctor.
Some years later, now a doctor who has helped many patients, he has at last made peace with the deaths of Lucy and Zoe, and with a newfound confidence and acceptance of himself, he is able to lead a full and happy life with new friends and learn to love once more.
