I think some people are still locked into the older way which is to just be authentic about their brand and focus on making the music good. For some musicians, the “performance art” aspect of the role (though essential in todays’ visually fixated society) detracts from the music itself and in some cases can even make the music less genuine. This isn’t true for every genre as male EDM and hip-hop artists have bounced around it for years. But I think there are still many genres that culturally, value The Genuine over The Flashy. If we want the flashy... we know who to go to.

Plus these days, authenticity and realistic tends to be a “better sell” than the flashy and extravagant. There’s exceptions but for the most part, people want real in the content that they consume because it makes the work and the people more relatable.

Why don’t male musicians dress cool and extravagantly and weird anymore? Don’t y'all now you’re performers? Why do y'all just wear khaki pants and flannels with the buttons all the way up? Where’s your disco outfits? Where’s your hammer pants? Why aren’t y'all out here looking like Liberace or Elton John? Where is your David Byrne big suit? Why’re y'all charging so much for people to see you wearing t shirt and shorts? Where are the iconic musician outfits that people used to love to dress like?

Dear @taylorswift , I’m sorry I haven’t written you in a while. folklore has taken me some time to digest and fully soak in all the colors it has to offer on many levels. This is a really beautiful album Taylor. Truly. You outdo yourself with each new work you put yourself into. I really appreciate your perspective. cardigan hits home for me for sure but seven and the last great american dynasty are also keepers. I mean, to be honest, the whole album is keepers for me, like each of your pieces of art.

This album is such full of depth for me and each time I listen to each song, I bring with me another takeaway or vantage point. This record is really one of the gifts that keeps on giving. My birthday is this Tuesday and (though this came long before my 27th birthday) this is the best “gift” I could have. I really needed this to pull me away from COVIID life... even if only for 63 minutes 😜
