Alright, so it’s Holocaust remembrance day, which means I’m determined enough to retype this post even though I was almost done with it when my computer crashed, and now I have to retype it on my wife’s computer, and she has a weird ergonomic keyboard and a trackball mouse and stuff…
Anyway, in 1997 in Sweden there were worrying trends - a lot of people were doubtful about democracy, and slowly slipping into fascism and racism. One of the specific things a lot of people found problematic was a vocal minority who were denying that the Holocaust ever happened.
So in response, the Swedish government sponsored a book about the Holocaust, with a specific emphasis on how the population grew complacent and allowed a fascist regime to take control. They also spoke in detail about Sweden’s actions before, during, and after WW2. Both good things (such as giving refuge to most of Denmark’s Jewish population; and the actions of Swedish diplomat to Hungary, Raol Wallenberg) and the bad things (Swedish Nazi sympathisers, the Swedish race institute and their questionable research, systematic racism in Swedish history, Swedish government cooperating with the Nazi regime, Sweden’s general unwillingness to accept more refugees, and much more).
The book was distributed for free in 1998, and is still available for free at the publisher’s website. The Swedish title is “…om detta må ni berätta…“, a biblical quote from Book of Joel 1:3, which in English most commonly is translates as “Tell ye your children”, but a closer Swedish-to-English translation would be “you must tell this story”.
Anyway, this book is available for free in English: Tell Ye Your Children.
It’s also available in several other languages: Arabic, Finnish, Persian, Spanish, Turkish. Oh, and the original Swedish, of course.
Content warnings apply. It’s the fucking Holocaust.
I figured I’d share this today, both as a general resource if someone could use some well-researched material about Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, but also as a look at how one country tried to combat fascism and racism, which is… sadly relevant to us even two decades later. (And I’m not denying that Sweden still has plenty of issues with racism. I just think this was a pretty decent attempt at fighting back.)

So, to be explicit, when we say never again about the holocaust in the UK, it means we need to fight harder against refugees being turned back at the border, against deportations, against ignoring genocides in other countries and doing nothing to help the victims.
We need to fight against the myth of British exceptionalism, and the idea we were the “good guys” and that “winning the war” somehow gives us the moral high ground forever more.
We need to fight against the rising tide of fascism and racism and eugenics in our society now.

I think it's funny how white people (yes ALL of you) will whine about poc asking them to learn about racism from poc and not just through "fiction" and the excuse is that that's the easiest way to teach people lessons, but then those white people can't analyze ANY media or current events and find the racism in it. Like they will try to justify making all your villains dark skinned and then scream about why h*try p*tter is radical text (also missing Rowling's rampant *checks notes* racism, antisemitism, transphobia, transmisogyny, homophobia, fatphobia etc.). Like.....if fantasy racism is the only effective way to teach about racism, why can't y'all recognize racism better? Everyone and their mother wants to compare Trump to Voldemort and yet y'all can't recognize how the Capital Coup was a push in favor of white supremacist fascism? Are you reading the books or just reading names of characters so you can write a smut fic?

Today is Holocaust Remberance Day so remember to continue to challenge antisemitic biases that yourself and society hold, make Jewish and Roma people feel safe and uplifted, and include us in your activism.

Hey all! You can see the full instructions for free on my Patreon! These masks are easy to make and relatively comfortable in my opinion! For an extra layer of protection, you can add an extra 8’x7’ piece of fabric or interfacing in the middle! Wash them normally and lay flat to dry. ❤️

Controversial opinion (somehow) but it should be illegal for schools to assign homework on the high holidays.

I’m not sure how people walk away from certain episodes of Black Mirror thinking the main point is, like, “iPhones are bad and technology is scawwy!!” And not “in capitalist systems and institutions where inequality persists, technology will be exploited to enforce the status quo”
